Mining and beneficiation can be described as sequential processes of separation of valuable minerals from waste. There is a great deal of interest in how the industry can be more effective – and efficient – with these processes. In particular, many mining companies are looking towards digital technologies to improve precision mining practices; that is, the targeted identification and separation of valuable ore from waste during the mining process. Methane emitted from underground coal mines, along with ventilation air and known as ventilation air methane (VAM), constitutes the largest component of coal mine methane (CMM) emissions. Atmospheric methane, on the other hand, is a potent greenhouse gas with a significant adverse impact on the atmosphere. This has led to the development of various technological alternatives for its use as an energy fuel. Techniques involving oxidation of VAM, usually consisting of very low concentrations of methane, have been validated in the past. Prominent among these technologies are the thermal and catalytic flow reversal reactors, ancillary fuel technologies, lean fuel gas turbines, and concentrators and gasifiers. However, the efficiency of any VAM utilisation technique depends on the amount and concentration of methane in the ventilation exhaust air. Therefore, quantification of VAM emission from a coal mine is the first step towards identifying the most suitable technology for its utilisation for energy production. This paper presents an evaluation of the efficacy of VAM as an energy source. It provides details of a case study aimed at developing a technique to accurately quantify VAM emission from a coal mine. It further discusses the various VAM utilisation techniques available, and presents an economic evaluation of the alternatives. Based on the findings of the study, the most feasible method for VAM utilisation is identified for the mine. The paper summarises the procedure for quantifying VAM emissions and selecting the most suitable utilisation technique.

Separator performance is evaluated by the so-called separation efficiency. The concept of efficiency in mineral dressing operations must be interpreted with considerable care. Although qualitative use of term efficiency is valid and useful, difficulties arise in expressing it quantitatively because two conflicting criteria, grade and recovery are normally involved in its evaluation. It is undesirable to express efficiency as a single value, even though this is frequently done in practice, since there are strictly speaking an infinite number of combinations of grade and recovery that can give that one value. Inefficiencies in processes can be attributed to three broad sources: mineral limitations as represented by the separability curves, equipment limitations (which prevent the maximum separation indicated by the separability curves), and human failure to minimise these inefficiencies. In the present paper, the efficiency of a two-constituent separation process has been examined. The separation process has been evaluated by comparing the sharpness factor of the actual, the absolutely efficient and the absolutely inefficient operations.

The initial development fl6tation testwork on Mt. Windarra op was completed on composited drill core intersections at the.Australian Mineral Development Laboratory. An exploratory winze provided samples, from the 130 M. level of the Mt. Windarra mine, for pilot plant and bench development tests. A limited test programme was initiated on the South Windarra drill core composites. Detailed mineralogy has been completed on selected samples from both ore deposits.

In all metallurgical plants metallurgists require analyses of the various intermediate products, eg flotation feeds, flotation concentrates, tailings, mattes, slags, etc to monitor the efficiency of the plant processes and for plant control purposes. Traditionally these samples have gone to off-site laboratories and there can be some considerable delay before analytical data are received. On-line monitors have to be used for plant control purposes and these are difficult to maintain and can give poor quality data. Recent technological advances in automation in analytical laboratories now allow a far quicker turn-around time for analytical data so they can be of more use to the metallurgist. Automation, which involves the use of robots and fewer people in laboratories, has the added benefit of providing higher quality data as the possibility of human error and bias is minimised. Differences between conventional manual laboratories and automated laboratories are described. Automated analytical laboratories are now becoming the laboratories of choice for mining companies which require large numbers of samples to be analysed on a 24/7 basis on similar sample types using the same sample preparation methods and analytical procedures. Automated laboratories have now been installed in platinum, iron ore, copper and aluminium producing mining companies. A further advantage to metallurgical plants is now the possibility of siting automated analytical laboratories in-plant and designing the plant around the laboratory. Concentrator streams, slags, etc can be sampled by automated samplers, the samples transferred by automation to the in-plant laboratories and all sample preparation and analyses carried out by automated processes. These laboratories require a minimum of staff. Such automated in-plant laboratories have been installed on a platinum mine flotation plant, a platinum mine smelter and steel plants. One is in process of being installed on an iron-ore mine with the sampling being carried out by an automated sampling tower. The procedures followed in planning an automated analytical laboratory for a metallurgical plant are described in detail in the paper. The platinum plant smelter automated system which includes rapid transport of samples by air-tube to the laboratory for the analysis of the samples by XRFS is also described in the paper. It is concluded that automated analytical laboratories can be retro-fitted to most metallurgical plants but they are best suited to greenfield sites.

Access roads for haulage, construction or maintenance purposes are discussed with particular attention being given to the un- sealed "all weather" form of construction for Off-Highway applications. The service conditions experienced by the surfaces used in these roads is examined. These conditions are discussed in terms of the conventional engineering properties used for natural gravel material selection. Experience gained during the construction of a pipeline access track is used to illustratE material selection guidelines based on geological input and an understanding of good construction practices. TMITDnIll IrTT Ohl In many Australian situations off-highway haulage by wheel or track supported vehicles is carried on unsealed, gravel roads. Although the unsealed gravel road is the back-bone of the rural road network in Australia, in general, traffic loadings are relatively low compared to the off-highway unsealed haulage road. The cost of the haulage/access road construction component is one important factor in project planning which needs careful consideration. It is no longer acceptable that the initial rough exploration track be gradually upgraded so that it will eventually carry construction and maintenance traffic safely and efficiently. Various factors influence the exploration geologist or geochemist in his choice of.an analytical method for gold and other elements which may help him find the elusive gold deposit. One of the first decisions the geologist must make is the nature of sample media to collect for his survey. Needless to say there are many media available depending on the situation. These include rocks, soils, heavy mineral concentrates (from overburden drilling and panned concentrates), humus, vegetation, water, lake bottom sediments, stream sediments, etc. The choice of the sample media will depend to a large degree on the state of development of the particular project from grassroots to mine feasibility. The nature of the geological information required will affect which media and which analytical technique should be chosen for the analysis. Valid sampling from the initial sample collection, preparation and subsampling aspects may also help to determine which analytical procedure is best. Cost and turnaround time are of prime. importance to the explorationist, as it should be, however, these aspects should not be detached from receiving accurate and reliable results.

Point load testing for irregular rock specimens was studied to determine the relationship between tensile and compressive strengths, drill penetration rate and other rotary drilling parameters. The DH-l type point load tester was developed and more than 2 000 irregular specimens of over 60 kinds of rock from 16 mines and quarries were tested. The effects of size, shape and number of samples on the point load strength index were investigated, using regression analysis. Experiments were carried out to investigate the relationship between point load strength index and uniaxial compressive strength on 29 kinds of rock. The relationship between these values and the drill penetration rate for rotary and percussion drills is discussed.

The treatment of nickel ores and concentrates and the subsequent processing to recover separate products of nickel and cobalt is one of the major interests at present in the mining industry. The increasing demand for nickel, and more recently also cobalt, has led to increased exploration for ore sources. Major discoveries have resulted in Canada and Australia. These deposits, as well as others already known, are presently being developed and the process technology tested and evaluated for applicability to the different mineralogical types - mainly sulphide, arsenide and oxide laterites. Concentrates may be treated by either hydro- or pyrometallurgical processes, while the nickel laterites are best suited to hydrometallurgical processing. However, if hydrometallurgy is used, once the ore or concentrate is leached the resultant solutions are then amenable to similar separation technologies for purification and recovery of high purity nickel and cobalt products. Solvent extraction, together with other separation processes such as precipitation, can produce high purity solutions of nickel and cobalt. The final products of these solutions may be nickel and cobalt cathodes, metal powders precipitates or salts, depending on the final process of electrowinning, hydrogen reduction, precipitation, or crystallisation Respectively.

Although the conventional procedures for designing agitator flotation plants are well-known and reliable, little experience for designing modem pneumatic flotation plants has been gained up to now. A reliable procedure originating from graphic methods for the design of distillation columns is presented. Examples demonstrate on laboratory and semi-technical scale the application of this extremely practical method for designing a fly ash and a magnesite flotation plant.

While a per onnel location system is primarily used to check that nobody is left in the mine at firing time, it is also useful for contacting people, uch a foremen, shiftbosses and tradesmen, who travel over several mine levels during a shift. The system installed at The Zinc Corporation, Limited, Broken Hill, uses punched coded plastic identity tags, with "In" and "Out" tag readers on each level. When entering a level, the employee inserts his tag in the "In" reader, and when leaving, in the "Out" reader. Each reader is connected to a central computer which shows who is still in the mine and their location.The system has been used on 3 levels by 21 men for a trial period of 4 months. It ha proved reliable in an underground mining environment, and employee acceptance has been good.

A number of cooperative studies have been carried out as preliminary work for drafting a standard for application of granulated slag sand for concrete, and the following conclusions were reached 1 The ten kinds of granulated slag sands pro- duced in Japan satisfy the national standard for fine aggregate in terms of physical and chemical properties. 2 Mortar and concrete tests conducted with granulated slag sand revealed that, although with slight differences in the extent, gran- ulated slag sands used in these tests were applicable'as fine aggregate for concrete, 3 The pumpability test by a concrete pump carried out on concrete with two kinds of now commercially available granulated slag sand demonstrated that the pump pressure feeding is applicable in the same manner as in the case of ordinary concrete. These tests permitted' preparation of a draft standard for application of granulated slag sand, and the results formed the first step toward utilizing this material as a sub- stitute for natural sand.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.On 8 February 2016, a major ground movement occurred in the K-Link orebody of the Kencana underground mine, effectively blocking the only two access ways to the stoping area. Following mine clearance, it was found that a Solo production drill rig operator, who had been drilling in the Level 10 Extraction Drive was still underground, cut off from the rest of the mine by the ground movement.Communication, nutritional and logistic supply to the trapped operator was established with the breakthrough of two diamond drill holes. A range of technical expertise and opinions from both on and off-site were sought and two options were chosen for implementation of the rescue operation. The rescue was completed successfully on 16 February 2016 with the operator being rescued in good physical and mental health.CITATION:Kosmara, K, Hilli, A and Steyn, J, 2017. The establishment of vegetation onto open cut mine spoil is dependant on the nature of the soil and rock strata of the overburden. Experience has shown that in the Bowen Basin of Central Queensland the nature of the minespoil changes considerably as subsequent and deeper mining strips intercept changing rock strata. The different mixes of strata at the surface of reshaped spoilpiles can produce variable response in the sown vegetation cover. It is usual that land features of mine sites are known in detail and are depicted on mine or locality maps. Subsurface strata and lithology descriptions are available and are used for planning of open cut mining operations. Surface and subsurface data can also be used to estimate the intrinsic nature of overburden through the use of fence diagrams. Lithology at points along a mined strip can be obtained and used to describe overburden. Indications are that correlations exist between salinity of overburden components and the response of vegetation. The developed procedure thus becomes a useful tool for the prediction of revegetation Practices.

The hazard posed by underground mine fires is illustrated in the first part of this paper by means of a review of experiences in four mining countries over the last three decades. This brief review indicates that while much progress has been made generally in preventing fires and providing means of protection to miners, the possibility of disasters occurring must continue to be regarded as very real. Based upon recent investigations by the South African mining industry, an integrated strategy for providing protection to personnel in the event of a fire is outlined in the second part of the paper. The main, complementary, elements in this strategy are the prevention of ignitions, the limitation of fires, provision of protection systems and equipment, training for emergencies, and effective implementation of safety measures. Some comments are made on important aspects of these elements and on possible further developments.

The mining industry is beginning to adopt quality systems based on the requirements of International Standards for quality assurance, such as the ISO 9000 series. Indications from similar industries are that considerable benefits are to be had from their adoption. This paper describes the use of the International Standard ISO 9001 for quality assurance within BUKA Minerals Limited. This provided guidance for the development of a clear statement providing agreement on the processes to be followed and the outputs required when dealing with outside service providers. Discussion focuses on the interaction with BUKAÆs consultants and contractors during the specification stage, resulting from the application of quality assurance techniques. Risk analysis was used to identify and manage the risks associated with the companyÆs contract for geotechnical and mine design services and the tender for a mine development program of work during the feasibility stage of the project. Setting acceptance controls for the deliverables from such contracts is traditionally fraught with difficulty. BUKA used Failure Mode and Effect Analysis for exposing underlying risks that were not effectively being countered. The briefs were reviewed and additional controls were developed to manage the risk. These controls have provided clearer instructions to the consultants and contractors, indicated audit points for the company and defined the deliverables. There exists within the company, and among its outside service providers, a clearer understanding of what is to be achieved and how it will be measured. The process has imparted considerable confidence to both parties on how the work will proceed and what outputs are to be provided. Some discussion is provided on how quality principles are being applied throughout industry and commerce, generally, and how they may apply to the mining industry. The paper argues that, far from being an appendix to the tendering process, Risk Management should be a mandatory step integrated into the definitions of the work.

In order for the Australian underground coal mining industry to achieve the high productivity rates demanded of it without compromising its good safety record, improved geotechnical monitoring systems are required. One of the main problem areas affecting underground coal mining is the deterioration of previously stable roadways.CSIRO Division of Geomechanics has been working on a NERDDC funded project to develop an instrument to monitor coal mine roof deformation. The instrument which has been developed, Roof Alert, is a self contained, battery powered, intrinsically safe device. It can monitor the magnitude and rate of deformation and give multiple, variable visual alarm signals where preset levels ate exceeded.
