New and developing communication systems en-able underground miners to, not only connect to the surface from an increased communication coverage area, but also to be discovered in the event of an emergency. Communication and tracking systems are required by the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Ad-ministration (MSHA) regulations, aiming to enhance health and safety and routine production in underground operations. Modeling a mine?s potential communication coverage area will increase overall coverage and efficiency of the communication network itself. Modeling the propagation of wireless communications enables ideal broadcast locations to be found when designing a communications network. Strategic placement of broad-cast devices results in a reliable communication network that can better withstand disruption in daily operation and during a time of emergencies. Research on wireless communication in mines has been ongoing since 1922, when the U.S. Bureau of Mines performed experiments in its experimental mine in Bruceton, PA (Schiffbauer & Brune, 2006a). Ac cording to Dobroski and Stolarczyk (1982), ?as early as 1922, Bureau of Mines experiments showed that radio propagation in mines was possible but not practical.? In 2006, the underground communication technologies available to the mining industry had inherent problems that limited communication capabilities. Because harsh underground mine environments significantly reduce line of sight and propagation range and introduce power and safety concerns, the overall effectiveness of underground communication technologies were limited. The objective of this research was to establish the relationship between production, consumption and energy cost in the surface mining of bituminous coal. Specific energy sources such as diesel, gasoline, electricity, explosives and bituminous coal were considered in this study. Gain in net energy, proportion of the cost of energy consumption and total energy cost relative to total revenue of extracted coal were determined, and a new energy efficiency index and a new energy-cost ratio were established. A case study on an operating surface coal mine was carried out to demonstrate the application of the newly developed method. The results of this study can be used by the mine operators in establishing strategies for the optimization of energy production and consumption, and for reducing the cost of bituminous coal extraction.

Obtaining financing for mining and exploration projects has been difficult for the last several years, particularly for junior companies. Today, though, the purse strings of investors appear to be loosening, leaving the industry with many questions about financing in the coming years. How have capital markets and exploration spending changed? Are there signs of improvement? Where has capital been raised in private, public markets, stock exchanges, private equity, etc.? What companies successfully raised capital in the last year? How are they spending it? How are traditional and alternative funding sources investing in mining? What are the issues mining companies need to know about when tapping alternative sources of capital? Those were some of the questions that were answered at the Current Trends in Mining Finance conference, sponsored by SME and the New York Section April 26-28. Held in New York City, the conference attracted 115 professionals who work on the finance and economic side of the mining industry. Three of the conference organizers talked with Mining Engineering about the conference and the state of financing in the industry today. Tim Alch (TA) is managing director with Behre Dolbear & Co. The national Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health, Ground Control Engineering Branch is investigating the use of shotcrete in weak rock mass mines with the objective of reducing fatalities and injuries resulting from rock fall accidents. When shotcrete is used as part of a multi-element ground support system, it is necessary to know when the material has developed a compressive strength of approximately 1 MPa (145 psi), the early threshold for safe re-entry of miner and machine into shotcreted mine workings at this value, the material has developed enough strength to be self-supporting and to allow for installation of other ground support components that require drilling of the shotcrete layer without degradation. NIOSH researchers have developed methods and portable test equipment to measure shotcrete strength on site in the first six hours after application using a partial beam test standard, a STM C 116-90 (1990). These advances were demonstrated in tests with five commercially available shotcrete mixes, sprayed as dry shotcrete using field expedient methods and equipment. The strength values from these tests allowed for real-time identification of the early strength threshold and were consistent with strengths reported using laboratory-type equipment. Measuring the early strength properties of shotcrete directly at the mine site can improve mine safety by identifying appropriate re-entry times and providing a convenient means of conducting on site quality control during shotcrete applications.

Likewise, its iconic yellow bulldozers are at mine sites the world over — the company recently announced the sale of its 40,000th large dozer. And since its acquisition of Bucyrus in 2011, Caterpillar has positioned itself to become a worldwide leader in the underground mining sector as well.But don’t think that the company is resting on its reputation. As evidence of its commitment to the global mining sector, as well as its confidence in the future of mining, Caterpillar invited mining trade press, including Mining Engineering, to its Tinaja Hills Training Center near Tucson, AZ in November to introduce the latest editions to its mining portfolio. The two-day event focused mostly on the newest electric drive haul trucks, the Cat 796 AC, which will operate in the 326-t (360-st) class, and the 798 AC in the 360 t (400 st) weight class.Caterpillar representatives also spoke about new offerings in the underground space as well as the newest version of the D11 large dozer.“It has been 10 years since we launched the F Series,” Jean Savage, Caterpillar’s vice president, surface mining and technology said. “Since then, we have been on a journey to serve our mining customers and we wanted to have trucks in every application. Today, we are launching two new trucks that will allow us to fill out our portfolio.”While Caterpillar previously offered the broadest range of off-highway haul trucks to the mining industry, it was noticeably absent from the 326-t (360- st) and 360-t (400-st) weight classes."

Lidding over or tunneling existing transportation infrastructure is currently under review in several U.S. cities. The main reasons for this are the use of the created space for urban development, the reduction of noise and exhaust fumes for the residents, and, thus, a significant increase in the quality of life. The main aspects to be considered during the planning process are (1) total investment and operational costs, (2) impact of construction works on current traffic, (3) safety and fire protection, and (4) socio-environmental issues. The paper presents some basic planning principles, and experiences of recent urban highway coverages are shared.

In this study, a fuzzy logic self-tuning PID controller based on an improved disturbance observer is designed for control of the ball mill grinding circuit. The ball mill grinding circuit has vast applications in the mining, metallurgy, chemistry, pharmacy, and research laboratories; however, this system has some challenges. The grinding circuit is a multivariable system in which the high interaction between loops, the variation of the system parameters with time, and time delay are some of the problems that pose a challenge. Since the controller parameters are determined offline in classic PID control, these gains are unchangeable and cannot overcome the mentioned challenges in this system. Hence, a fuzzy logic self-tuning PID controller, which is a combination of fuzzy logic and a conventional PID controller, is proposed to control the grinding system, especially in the presence of model mismatch and disturbances. In addition, in order to solve the system challenges, a multivariable control approach based on an improved disturbance observer is proposed to suppress the effects of the disturbances. The most important feature of the algorithm proposed in this paper as the combination of fuzzy logic self-tuning PID and improved disturbance observer is its ability to eliminate system interaction, attenuate internal and external disturbances, and compensate the effect of system uncertainty on the performance of the ball mill grinding circuit. Simulation results in the cases of the set-point change in particle size and circulating load in the presence of model mismatch and external disturbances confirmed the controller performance compared to other controllers.

From there, the association grew to represent the interests of Canada?s mineral exploration and development industry. The PDAC will encourage the highest standards of technical, environment, safety and social practices in Canada and internationally. ?Today, the PDAC?s 6,000 individual members include prospectors, developers, geoscientists, consultants, mining executives and students. In addition, the association?s membership includes 950 corporate members, representing senior, mid-sized and junior mining companies in addition to organizations that provide services and equipment to the mining industry. In 2010, the PDAC adopted its e3 Plus principles, a framework to guide its membership in responsible exploration.

A nearly 305-m- (1,000-ft-) wide sandstone channel was projected to run through the mid panel area of a 457-m- (1,500-ft-) wide longwall panel in a southwestern Pennsylvania coal mine. This sandstone channel was known to cause serious longwallface roof control problems in the mine?s B-panel area in 1998 and 1999; and most recently, it induced many large face cavities and caused a substantial production delay in the preceding panel. For the two B panels mined in 1998 and 1999, hydraulic fracturing of the massive sandstone was conducted to facilitate better caving, thus relieving cantilever compressive stress at the longwall face. Vastly improved longwall face condition was observed and four weeks of mining delay due to bad roof conditions were eliminated. The implementation of the hydraulic fracturing technique, results of underground observation and measurement, and results of numerical modeling were summarized in a paper presented in the 20th International Conference on Ground Control (Su et al., 2001). This article is a summary of the activities that took place during a four-month period (October 2011 through February 2012) at a Consol Energy longwall mine southwestern Pennsylvania to improve face conditions and safety of underground personnel during mining of the 457-m- (1,500-ft-) wide longwall panel. The elevated concern for safety was driven by adverse face conditions encountered while mining the preceding longwall panel. Many of the problems were attributed to a thick and massive sandstone channel. A joint task force consisting of coal operations engineering, Pennsylvania operations engineering and CNX Gas personnel was formed in August 2011, which recommended drilling four hydraulic fracturing holes along the center axis of the sandstone channel to reduce pressure and improve face conditions at the longwall face. Built-in-place (BIP) refuge alternatives (RAs) are designed to provide a secure space for miners who cannot escape during a mine emergency. Heat and humidity buildup within RAs may expose miners to physiological hazards such as heat stress. To minimize the risk of heat stress, Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), or 30 CFR, mandates a maximum allowable apparent temperature (AT) for an occupied RA of 35 °C (95 °F) (MSHA 2008 [1]). The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has conducted extensive research on the thermal environment of occupied RAs intended for use in underground coal mines. NIOSH research has demonstrated that a fully occupied BIP RA can exceed the AT limit by > 5.6 °C (10 °F) in mines with elevated mine strata and air temperatures (Bissert et al. 2017 [2]). In this circumstance, an RA cooling system could provide a solution. This paper provides an overview of test methodology and findings as well as guidance on improving the performance of a cryogenic air system prototype by optimizing the flow rate, increasing the tank storage capacity, and improving the efficiency of the heat exchanger of the cryogenic system. This may enable BIP RAs to meet the 35 °C (95 °F) AT limit in mines with elevated temperatures. The information in this paper is useful for RA manufacturers and mines that may choose to implement a cryogenic air system as a heat mitigation strategy

In 1989, an autogenous grinding task force was formed to study potential autogenous grinding circuits to replace the existing semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) at the National Steel Pellet Plant in Keewatin, MN. Pilot plant test work, performed by the Hanna Research Center (HRC), indicated that fully autogenous grinding with pebble extraction and crushing could be incorporated into the existing circuits. In 1990, one of the existing 10 grinding mills was converted for an in-plant test incorporating pebble crushing. Full-scale test work were conducted in 1990 and 1991. They verified the pilot plant projections with primary mill throughputs from the fully autogenous circuit using pebble crushing being greater than throughput of the existing SAG mill circuits. The plant produces 5 Mt/a (4.9 million ltpy) of iron ore pellets from 17.6 Mt (17.3 million It) of crude taconite. Crude ore is single-stage crushed by gyratory crushers. Primary grinding is performed by 10 semi-autogenous wet grinding mills. Secondary grinding is performed by five ball mills. Induration is with an Allis Chalmers grate-kiln pelletizing system. The primary grinding circuit consists of 108.2-m-diam x 5.5-m long (27 ft-diam x 18-ft) SAG mills. The mills are charged with 127 mm-diam (5 in.diam) steel grinding balls at from 3% to 5% by volume. Ball consumption rate is about 0.55 kg/t (1.25 lbs/lt) of crude ore feed to the mill. Each SAG mill is powered by two 2.6 MW (3500 hp) motors drawing 5450 kW (7300 hp) at 76% of critical speed. The mills are grate discharge with 16 mm (0.6 in.) slotted grate openings when new. The mill discharge is sized on a trommel screen having 4.5 mm (0.2 in.) openings. The plus 4.5 mm (+0.2 in.) oversize material is returned to the discharge end of the mill by a reverse screw auger located in the center of the trommel. The -4.5 mm (-0.2 in.) trommel screen undersize is pumped to magnetic cobbers.

Failures of tailings dams have been happening lately. Due to the lack of laws on particular design criteria and stability requirements related monitoring during construction and maintenance, they are thought to be more fragile than hydraulic dams. Monitoring the dam is therefore necessary to understand its current condition and guarantee its safety. The physical condition of the dam could be evaluated with the early identification of seepage. Additionally, due to their adaptability and capacity for high-resolution data collecting, UAVs are an excellent choice for efficiently covering the tailings dam site. UAVs may capture high-quality photos when equipped with a high-resolution RGB camera, thermal sensors, or multispectral sensors. When these sensors are paired with image processing and machine learning algorithms, the result is a reliable estimate of the dam condition.

The Cal-Sag Relief Sewer is a 2.6 m (8 ft 6 in.) diameter 9.1 km (5.7 mile) rock tunnel bored in dolomite for the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago. Included in the project are 18 shafts varying in depth free 70 m (230 ft) to 41 m (135 ft). This paper discusses how Healy/Vanessa reduced costs by eliminating conventional hand excavation by hoisting muck from a high production Robbins TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) through small diameter drilled shafts and using a trailing rail-utility backup system.

In 1986, United States' barite production fell 48.9%, consumption - sold or used by grinding plants - was off 47.3%, and imports were down 63.8%. Meanwhile, world mine production decreased 29.6%, according to the US Bureau of Mines. However, value of US-produced barite FOB mine increased 46.51%, according to USBM figures. The declared value CIF US port of all imported unground barite decreased from $41.94/t ($46.23 per st) to $39.02/t ($43.01 per st). Nevada continued to be the leading US producer of barite with 69% of the total. It is followed by Georgia, Missouri, Tennessee, and California. The USBM estimates that 65% of the barite mined was used as a weighting agent in drilling fluids. The remaining 35% was used in the production of barium chemicals and as a filler. Most of the production from Missouri, Georgia, and Tennessee was used in the non-oilfield sector. This sector made up a larger percentage of the US produced barite in 1987 than it did in 1986, increasing the overall value per ton of barite. Barite consumption was at its lowest since 1963. It is estimated that 80% of the barite was consumed in the drilling fluid market. The remaining 20% was used in barium chemicals, glass, and as filler in plastics and paper. The decline of barite used in drilling fluid followed the decline in the average number rotary rigs operating - 964 versus 1968 in 1985. This was the lowest average number of rotary rigs operating since 1971. The non-oilfield market was up 5.3% in 1986. This increase can be attributed to the increased use as a filler in plastics. Imports of crude barite, though down nearly two-thirds, still made up 65% of the barite consumed in the US. China was the leading exporter to the US with 58%, followed by India, 15.4%; Morocco, 11%; Thailand, 5.4%; Mexico, 4.6%; Chile, 3.9%; and Ireland, 1.7%. Less than 1% of the imported ore was used in the nonoilfield sector. Imports of ground barite dropped from 64.4 kt (71,000 st) to 19.8 kt (21,800 st) in 1986. Of this amount, 14.1 kt (15,500 st) were used in drilling fluids in 1986 and the remainder for non-oilfield use. During 1986, more of the grinding plants supplying the drilling fluid market were closed. Dresser Magcobar and IMCO Services, a Halliburton company, formed M-I Drilling Fluids Co. Mine production in the US will probably decrease in 1987 due to the lower cost of imported ore. No significant change is expected in the drilling fluid market. The average number of operating rotary rigs is estimated at 950 in 1987 versus 965 in 1986. The nondrilling fluid markets (chemicals, glass, and filler) will follow the overall US economy. Bauxite and alumina R. J. Anderson, Ohio State University US bauxite production in 1986 dropped to a pre-World War II level, continuing a decline that began a decade ago. 1986 production totaled 450 kt (496,000 st), compared to 674 kt (743,000 st) in 1985. World production of bauxite also decreased in 1986. This reflected the soft market in alumina, aluminum, and related products. Total mine production worldwide came to 79 Mt (87 million st), down from 85 Mt (94 million st) in 1985. For the sixteenth consecutive year, Australian production of bauxite led all other sources. No other country approached the 28 Mt (31 million st) mined in Australia in 1986, despite a 4.4-Mt (4.9-million st) drop in its output from 1985. Other major producers in 1986 were: Guinea 11 Mt (12 million st), Brazil, 6.5 Mt (7 million st), Jamaica, 6.5 Mt (7 million st), and Suriname 2.8 Mt (3 million st). Despite weakness in world demand for bauxite, Venezuela, heretofore an alumina producer, is now pushing development of a new mining venture near the western border of the state of Bolivar. Plans call for barging bauxite down the Orinoco River to the Ciudad Guyana alumina plant, a distance of 650 km (400 miles).

Introduction The US Bureau of Mines has designed and evaluated total mill ventilation systems (TMVS) at two mineral-processing operations. Both systems have proven proficient at cost-effectively reducing respirable dust levels throughout the mills. An 11.8-m3/sec (25,000-cfm) system installed at a clay-processing mill provided about 10 air changes per hour (acph). This system reduced respirable dust concentrations by about 40% throughout the mill building. The second evaluation was performed at a silica sand operation. Tests were performed with 23.6 and 47.2 m3/sec (50,000 and 100,000 cfm) of ventilation to the mill building, corresponding to 17 and 34 acph. Average millwide respirable dust reductions were 36% and 64%, respectively. This work was done to determine general guidelines and design criteria for operations that may be interested in implementing TMVS. TMVS should be designed to draw clean make-up air in near the base of the mill. This air provides general purging and may clear some dust-laden areas throughout the mill structure. It is discharged at or near the top of the structure. Without the TMVS, dust can exit the building through open doors, windows, etc. and contaminate outside plant workers. This dust can also be recirculated back into the mill building causing additional contamination problems. TMVS is not a stand-alone system. It is a supplemental technique to assist other localized dust control systems (Mody et al., 1987). Testing Total mill ventilation systems were evaluated at two processing operations. For both tests, the primary goal was to determine the reduction in respirable dust throughout the structure. Test site No. 1. The first evaluation was performed at a clay-crushing and screening mill in New York. The mill's base dimensions were 39.6 x 9.8 m (130 x 32 ft), giving a volumetric capacity of 4250 m3 (150,000 cu ft). The TMVS was designed to provide 12 m3/sec (25,430 cfm) of ventilation air to the mill, representing about 10 acph. This was accomplished by three 4 m3/sec (8475 cfm) roof-powered exhaustors that were evenly spaced across the roof. Three wall louvers provided inlets for make-up air at the mill's base. Two evaluations were performed at this mill. The first occurred for two days in December when outside air temperatures ranged from -12.2° to 4.4° C (10° to 40° F). Temperatures with the wind chill factor dropped as low as -34° to -40° C (-29 to -40° F) during the early morning. The second evaluation was in April when outside air temperatures ranged between 10° to 26.7° C (50° to 80° F). These two evaluations verified the effectiveness of TMVS in lowering respirable-dust concentrations throughout the mill. Gravimetric-sampler respirable-dust concentrations in December ranged from 0.22 to 2.39 mg/m3 under normal conditions, compared to 0.13 to 1.55 mg/m3 with TMVS. In April, respirable dust concentrations ranged from 0.29 to 4.84 mg/m3 under normal conditions compared to 0.21 to 2.37 mg/m3 with the system on. TMVS also increased visibility throughout the mill building. Dust reductions for gravimetric and RAM-I instruments are listed in Table 1. Each value was determined by comparing the average concentration for the entire day of testing for normal and TMVS values. The mean/standard deviation values for gravimetric and RAM-1 results were 42.5/17.6 and 37.1/16.8, respectively.

Future haulage cost projections led Foster Yeoman Limited into developing a fully mobile crushing and conveying system at its Torr Works quarry in Somerset, England. The purpose-built system has an effective throughput of 2,500 tonnes/hour and features an Orenstein and Koppel (O & K) manufactured walking frame, a Fuller-Traylor type 54 X 74 TC gyratory crusher, and unique mobile conveyor modules designed and manufactured by Foster Yeoman. Used in a single-bench operation in this 6 million-tonne per annum limestone aggregate quarry, the system is fed at the production face by 2 Caterpillar 992C loading shovels. The entire system is moved on a daily basis following production face locations.

A questionnaire was sent out to three classes of mines to determine the extent of the heat problem in U.S. and Foreign underground mines. The following list shows the replies received from this questionnaire, however not all the known hot mines in the US replied. A complete listing of the results can be seen in Appendix I. 1) US coal mines - 37 replies 2) US non coal mines - 23 replies 3) Foreign non coal mines - 36 replies. At the present time there are approximately eleven non coal and one coal mine in the US experiencing heat problems which require special efforts to maintain an acceptable working place climate. However since the survey was completed some of them have been placed on standby. The Mine Safety & Health Administration (MSHA) does not have any specific regulations relating to heat stress. Informally the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists guidelines are followed which use wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) with values ranging from 26.7°C to 31.1°C for a moderate workload, and different rest regimes. An MSHA report (Misaqi 1976) recommended that conditions should not exceed 26.1°C WBGT for men and 24.4°C WBGT for women. However, quite recently the organizations involved with planning two of the proposed nuclear waste repositories in the United States, have opted for the criteria of an air cooling power of 300 w/m2, and a WBGT of 27'C respectively.

The MetroWest Water Supply Tunnel project includes three main work shafts, excavated primarily in rock. Shaft L is 9.8 m (32 ft) diameter and 124.1 m (407 ft)deep. Shaft E is 7.0 by 12.8 m (23 by 42 ft) and 91.4 m (300 ft) deep. Shaft 5A is 7.9m (26 ft) diameter and 72.5 m (238 ft) deep. Construction methods are compared and contrasted. Lessons learned involve a differing site condition in soil overburden, contractor-proposed modifications, and remedial slurry wall work. Other aspects discussed include noise and vibration control, groundwater inflow, water treatment, muck handling and contract administration issues.
