The technology employed in the processing of nickel- and cobalt¬bearing ores is a continually developing process for utilizing the natu¬ral resources available at a given time. Most of the nickel-bearing ores of commercial importance fall under the category of sulfide or lateritic ores. While the occurrences of both types of ore have been known for over a century, until 1960 sulfide ores largely from Cana¬dian mines have constituted the chief source of production for com¬mercial nickel in the Free World. Sulfide ores are readily amenable to some physical means of concentration, but the lateritic ores are not readily concentrated, and to compete economically with the sulfide ores only the high-grade garnierite ores (a type of lateritic ore) found in New Caledonia were processed to any great extent up to the time of World War II. Around 1960, a gradual shift in emphasis towards latetitic ores as a commercial source of nickel became evident. See Fig. 1. New discoveries of sulfide ores, usually located underground, had not kept pace with the steadily increasing demand for nickel. The lateritic ores, found near the surface of the earth, could be readily surveyed and mined. Lower cost processes were being developed for the extrac¬tion of nickel from lateritic ores and for a time it appeared that, based on pre-OPEC economics, the lower grade lateritic ores-down to 1.2% nickel-could satisfy an increasing share of the world demand for nickel. The sharp increase in the price of crude oil in the 1970s, however, slapped an economic damper on the lateritic ores. Processes for treat¬ing lateritic ores consume large amounts of energy; as the nickel industry entered its deep recessionary period in 1981-83, nickel pro¬duction from lateritic ores became less and less profitable than from sulfide ores. At the same time, new sulfide ores were discovered and brought into production, notably in Australia and South Africa. The chapters in Section 17 were prepared in 1973. Recent improvements in mineral dressing techniques since then include Inco's pyrrhotite separation process which can remove additional pyrrhotite from nickel concentrates, resulting in reduced sulfur dioxide emission from the Sudbury smelter, by some 25%. The chapters in this section dealing with nickel are grouped in line with the two broad categories of nickel ores. Starting with the description of nickel and cobalt ores in Chapter 2, Chapter 3 deals with the processing of sulfide ores, and Chapter 4 deals largely with lateritic ores. The intermediate steps to produce a suitable feed for extraction plants and refineries are similar in principle within the same categories, although dissimilar between sulfide and lateritic ores. Thus Inco in Canada employs flotation and so does Western Mining Corp. in Australia, although Inco's plants were started before World War II, and that of Western Mining only recently in the late 1960s. Treatment subsequent to the ore dressing step, however, shows some interesting differences. "This paper analyzes mine emergency management and rescue practices in German underground coal mines and compares them to those used in the United States. The German mining industry has developed these practices over more than 100 years, and they have successfully managed numerous fire, water inundation and ground control emergencies using these techniques. The authors interviewed German mine emergency professionals about rescue team and emergency operations. These operations were then analyzed to determine which of these German principles would be of interest to United States mine rescue teams. Implementing these programs into United States mine rescue and emergency operations was analyzed. INTRODUCTION Coal mining has become much safer industry than it has been in the past. Advances in safety and health regulations and company polices have improved working conditions for miners all over the world. Even with these advances there is still a need for continued attention to safety and health. It is also important for mine safety professionals to observe practices and procedures in other countries and cultures and learn what and how to apply this knowledge in their own systems. Coal mine rescue has been an integral part in improving coal mine safety. Mine rescue procedures have evolved with time, experience and technology development. Today, coal mine rescue teams are still needed and must be continually trained and prepared for any mine emergency. Although it is hoped that improved mine safety policies and practices will eliminate coal mine disasters in the future, accidents remind us that disasters can still happen today. In May 2014, Turkey experienced a severe coal mine disaster where 301 people were killed [G.Tuysuz, 2014]. Our industry must learn from these incidents, focusing on disaster prevention and making improvements in mine rescue operations. Mine rescue procedures differ from country to country due different regulatory environments and different historical evolution of emergency response. Sharing practices and procedures from one country to another enables learning from different experiences and cultural backgrounds. Sharing is also a way of preserving information, identifying and learning best practices."

A current environmental concern is the cleanup and restoration of soil contaminated with low-level radionuclides at DOE sites including the Nevada Test Site. At the present, there is no applicable process to economically and effectively deal with the remediation of contaminated soils. This situation requires development of a selective flotation process to separate the radionuclides from contaminated soil efficiently and economically. In this study, a minus 200 mesh size fraction of pure cerium dioxide was used as a surrogate for plutonium oxide which is the major contaminant at the Nevada Test Site. A Hallimond flotation cell was utilized to examine the flotation behavior of cerium dioxide with oleic acid under various conditions of pH and collector concentration Mechanical cell tests were conducted to float the surrogate from a mixture with uncontaminated Nevada Test Site soil in the absence and presence of calcium carbonate as a carrier. Two different sizes of the carrier (minus 150 mesh and 65-150 mesh) were tested. It was found through the Hallimond cell flotation tests that the cerium dioxide could be floated well at pH's 4 and 9 with 10-3 molar oleic acid. It was also found that the addition of the carrier drastically enhanced the flotation recovery of cerium dioxide. The flotation recovery of the surrogate increased from 34 % to 65 % by adding only 0.5 % calcium carbonate (minus 150 mesh) in the feed and also increased to 95 % by adding 10 % of this carrier to the feed. The finer size fraction of calcium carbonate (minus 150 mesh) was more effective in recovering cerium dioxide than the coarser size fraction (65-150 mesh) The flotation method utilizing a carrier of calcium carbonate seems to provide a high potential to be used for the remediation of soil contaminated with radionuclides at various Department of Energy's nuclear weapon sites.

In mineral resources, geologic and mining data are acquired, processed, analysed, interpreted and modelled, eventually serving as basis to generate predictions and production plans. This is a complex process, and the resulting predictions are impacted by uncertainties related to the data itself and the processing methods and techniques used. They are also impacted by the subjective decisions made by the modeler(s) at each step of the way. Knowledge, biases, skills, and prior experience come into play in the long mineral resource evaluation development workflow. It is meaningless to discuss uncertainties without evaluating the associated risks that those uncertainties imply. It is important to quantify and assess uncertainty, and to evaluate and mitigate its consequences. This paper discusses (1) conceptual and practical sources of uncertainty; (2) the utopia of an “objective” uncertainty; and (3) the quantification and public reporting of uncertainty using geostatistical conditional simulations. The objective of this paper is to postulate that the industry is running out of reasons and excuses to ignore uncertainty and risk in project evaluation. This is done in two parts, with this, the first one, presenting a more conceptual discussion. Part 2 will present case studies from different types of mining projects and operations showcasing the impact that risk assessments can have in a mining project.

The mining industry depends upon inexpensive water transportation. Today, large quantities of mined products are transported by ships over oceans, from continents to continents, over lakes and waterways to the ultimate users. Sometimes, the routes these Bulk Carriers travel cover only a few hundred miles, sometimes thousands of miles halfway around the world. Most of the products of the mining industries are relatively inexpensive. A significant portion of their cost to the ultimate users are in the cost of transportation and not in loading and unloading these commodities at the ports of origination or destination. So far, the industry has produced very efficient loading and un- loading installations, but has very little influence over marine transportation or the design of the vessels themselves. Very little was ever published dealing with integrated transportation systems properly correlating all phases of the operation; namely, loading, marine transportation and unloading bulk materials.

The Goldstrike Mine is in Eureka County, Nevada, U.S.A., approximately 23 miles northwest of the town of Carlin. The mine is at the north end of the Tuscarora Spur of the Tuscarora Mountains at elevations of 5,300 feet to 5,950 feet. It is part of the Bluestar/Goldstrike sub-district of the Carlin Trend, a northwest alignment of sediment hosted, disseminated gold deposits. The Carlin Trend includes over 15 major gold deposits with production, reserves and geological resources of approximately 65 million ounces of gold (Figure 1). In the Bluestar/Goldstrike sub-district, there are seven major deposits: Betze, Lower Post, Post, Genesis, Bluestar, Purple Vein and Deep Star, plus numerous smaller deposits (Figure 2). Production, reserves and resources for the sub-district are approximately 40 million ounces. Betze and Purple Vein are located on property controlled by Barrick Goldstrike Mines and Bluestar and Genesis on Newmont Gold property. Post, Lower Post and Deep Star occur both on Barrick and Newmont property.

The FASTMETSM Process is a coal-based process for converting iron oxide fines into metallic iron. The end product, direct reduced iron (DRI) is used as a low residual charge material in electric arc furnace steelmaking. This paper describes the FASTMET Process and its potential application in the United States. Operating results from a 175 kg/h process simulator are presented. Characteristics of the end product are discussed. Process economics are reviewed along with plans for scaling-up the process to full commercial size.

INTRODUCTION During the nineteenth century, the federal mining law was enacted with the objective of promoting the development of the western United States by providing unrestricted access to vast areas of federal land for mineral exploration. Prior to the advent of comprehensive federal, state and local land use plans, there was little, if any, regulation or restriction of mineral exploration activities. Today, the laissez-faire policies of the past that encouraged mineral exploration have gradually given way to the public's legitimate concerns regarding environmental protection, multiple use and planned land development. As a result, the contemporary prospector confronts a maze of statutes, ordinances and regulations with which he must comply to obtain the requisite approvals and permits before commencing mineral exploration on federal, state or private lands. This presentation will provide a broad overview of the exploration permitting process. The first section of this paper recommends certain general management practices to follow when attempting to obtain exploration permits. The second section presents two hypothetical cases, one involving a drilling program on private property in California and the other involving a drilling program and the removal of a bulk sample for metallurgical tests from federal land in Nevada. The cases are used to discuss jurisdictional issues and application of certain federal, state and county laws and regulations that pertain to mineral exploration. The final section contains a brief analysis of three important recent United States Supreme Court decisions. These decisions address the scope of the federal pre-emption doctrine as it applies to activities conducted on unpatented mining claims and the constitutional limits of permissible state and local land use and zoning regulations. PERMITTING PRACTICES The environmental impacts associated with mineral exploration generally result from the construction of drill sites, roads or trenches. Consequently, after the regulatory authority has considered the issues of permissible land use, the primary emphasis of the permitting process is to address problems related to pre-construction site identification and clearance, and post-construction site reclamation. Significant changes in ownership and production of industrial clays have occurred since 2000. Clays covered in this presentation are kaolins, ball clays, smectites, (bentonite), and palygorskite (attapulgite)-sepiolite. IMERYS discontinued production of paper coating kaolins at their Cornwall operations and have expanded their kaolin production in Brazil. J. M. Huber sold their kaolin operation in Georgia to KaMin whose headquarters are in Ft. Worth, Texas. BASF purchased Engelhard?s kaolin and attapulgite operations in Georgia. ActiveMinerals purchased Southeastern Kaolin in South Carolina, Wilkinson County Kaolin in Gordon, Georgia, and Zemex Attapulgite in Quincy, Florida. Chemical Lime purchased Spinks Ball Clay Company in Paris, Tennessee. Most of the ball clays used in Italy and Eastern Europe comes from expanded operations in the Ukraine. Bentonite operations have expanded production in Wyoming and Montana because of strong demand for drilling mud, foundries, cat litter, and iron ore pelletizing. The production and exports of palygorskite in China continues to increase. Nanoclays utilizing sodium montmorillonite, palygorskite, and halloysite are actively being developed.

Cemented tungsten carbides are a sintered powder - metallurgical product essential to modern industry. Because of their moderate unit price and our dependence upon foreign sources for the component raw materials, a growing recycling industry has developed in the United States. There are two basic approaches taken to recycling cemented carbides; those which leave constituting materials unaltered or direct-reuse and those which separate the constitutes back to the raw components. To separate the carbides back to their raw components usually requires expensive chemical processing and is thus confined to the lower value materials such as grinding sludges. The direct-reuse methods recycle cemented carbides back to an intermediate level, a powder capable of being recompacted and resintered into a functional end-product. The coal mining cost models described in this paper represent a computerized estimating procedure for analyzing mining costs and requirements of proposed coal mining projects. Both surface and underground mining analyses can be conducted through the use of these models. These models were developed by the NUS Corporation for the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The methodology design of the cost models follows a process engineering approach for determining mining requirements and costs similar to the logic typically employed in preliminary mine feasibility studies. All capital and operating costs associated with a new coal mining project are thereby estimated. The results of these analyses are then entered into a financial analysis framework which computes annual cash flow summaries, utilizing a profit and loss statement approach, to solve for either the coal value/ton (minimum required selling price) or the rate of return on equity for the project. The coal value/ton is also referred to as the economic cost of production (F .O . B. mine, including preparation).

In Switzerland at present, the longest railway tunnels in the world, the Gotthard(57 km) and the Loetschberg base tunnel (34km) are under construction. For thischallenge six high-tech HERRENKNECHT Hard Rock Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM)are applied, which have to excavate approx. 80 km at the Gotthard and 20 km at the Loetschberg Tunnels. The machines being used are of a single Gripper-TBM type, which are equipped with the latest rock support techniques, in order to optimize the quality of the working conditions for the personnel which have direct impact on the quality of the tunnels. The different requirements of the projects based on different speci?cations within the tender documents led to completely different TBM concepts which will be reviewed in detail in this paper.

With the revolutionary progress in information and computer technologies, applying the latest information technologies in metallurgical complexes has become a serious challenge to both a major opportunity and a serious challenge to both management and technical teams. The emerging component and object technologies are changing the way everyone can beneficially use their computer and networks to add to their corporate bottom lines. Most mining and metallurgical plants use predictive maintenance policies based on statistical analysis and special techniques, like vibration analysis and oil and lube analysis for critical equipment. Process control strategies are installed in several metallurgical sites. All process equipment and control strategies require maintenance from local personnel at the mine. Integrated use of existing and emerging technologies is making it possible to implement an overall process effectiveness control index. This index is based on key indices such as losses due to plant availability, performance efficiency and rate of quality. The availability of real time and process history to identify the most critical part of the processing system from mechanical integrity is highlighted. An emerging plant integration paradigm is described to simplify the implementation of business enterprise resources management and distributed plant management systems.

Traditional loading systems have relied for many years on wheel and track loaders, power shovels, conveyor belts, and more recently, hydraulic front shovels. Each has certain advantages and disadvantages, depending largely on job conditions. Hydraulic backhoes were introduced several years ago as still another truck loading option. At first, buckets were small and backhoe use was limited to small earthmoving projects. Now, as backhoes are equipped with shorter sticks and bigger buckets to move larger quantities of earth. The "mass excavation" concept offers an excellent truck loading option in many situations. System Development and Advantages Mass excavation was first used successfully by contractors in site development and highway construction, loading both on-highway and off-highway trucks. Operators were able to take advantage of the excavator's ability to work in poor underfoot conditions and dig in tough materials. The technique was first applied to mining in the kaolin mines of central Georgia. Kaolin, one of the world's most abundant minerals, is used to make paper, paint, ceramics, rubber, plastics, and many other products. Since kaolin clay is slippery when wet, load-out with wheel loaders is very inefficient. Also, kaolin is found in very spotty deposits due to the weathering process involved in its formation. Consequently, draglines are also impractical for kaolin mining since they don't have the mobility to move between clay deposits. In response to these mining conditions and kaolin characteristics, mines began using excavators in mass excavation as early as 1976. They have developed a system that takes advantage of the excavator's •high penetration and breakout force in tight materials; •fast-cycling hydraulics; •ability to work in poor underfoot conditions; and •mobility in comparison to draglines. This loading method has been successful in Georgia's kaolin mines and now can be applied to other mining operations as well. The natural tendency for each party to consider only its legitimate self interests can lead to delays or deadlocks. The paper presents several viewpoints aimed at opening each party's mind to the ideas of others in the hope that negotiations might be more reasonable and rapid for the benefit of all concerned.

Coalbed methane (CBM) is currently being produced from a relatively small area in the Dunkard and Pocahontas basins, in the northern and central parts of the Appalachian Basin, respectively. In general, much of the production occurs where the coal beds are beneath 500 feet or more of overburden, where the rank of the coal is high-volatile B or greater (%Ro >0.8), and where the natural fracture system is enhanced by structural deformation. It is anticipated that near-term CBM development will continue within these areas and will expand in the Appalachian basin as technology improves and as the price of gas rises.

Injuries and fatalities resulting from roof falls are still a major concern in U.S. coal mines, and many researchers are focused on developing meaningful approaches to minimize this hazard. In the United States, coal mine roofs can vary widely in composition, geometry, and inherent heterogeneity, leading to a wide array of different roof fall failure types. Researchers frequently employ numerical modeling tools to reproduce this physical phenomenon and provide key guides to engineers regarding roof conditions and control as long as the input data and constitutive relations are appropriately selected. Simulating such complexity requires expertise and constitutive models that adequately simulate roof behaviors. However, the currently available constitutive models have shortcomings in capturing some of the roof fall failure types common in underground coal mines, such as guttering. A new constitutive model is developed to address the shortcomings of constitutive models commonly used for coal roof stability analysis. The constitutive model developed in this study combines the anisotropic-elasticity and nonlinear strain-softening responses. In addition, the developed constitutive model can simulate up to three different joint sets implicitly, allowing for use in both continuum and discontinuum settings, and can be used in both Lagrangian finite-volume and distinct element method codes of Itasca. First, the mathematical expressions of the model are provided. Afterward, the validation phase of the developed model that covers comparisons with analytical solutions and those of existing models (e.g., anisotropic elasticity, ubiquitous-joint, and bilinear strain-hardening/softening ubiquitous-joint plasticity) is presented. Finally, a hypothetical coal mine roadway facing high horizontal stress is simulated. The presented model successfully shows three distinct stages of a cutter roof in a shale roof: (1) initiation of shear cracks at the rib– roof intersection, (2) extension of cracks deeper into the roof (i.e., above the roof bolt length horizon), and (3) cantilevered roof. It is demonstrated that the presented constitutive model has the potential to help future researchers in simulating various roof responses.

[The Thompson Creek Coal and Coke Corporation, a. mall company engaged in producing coal in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, is currently engaged in a struggle of destiny to increase their production from inclined seam operation to compete with highly mechanized horizontal bed mines. This paper introduces some of the problems encountered it pitch seam mining as they apply to the convention, room and pillar system employed at the present time. Further described is the test work now being conducted to overcome these obstacles with an. attendant increase in productivity. Included in this test work is a mining machine designed especially for pitching seams, an automated longwall, and hydraulic mining of the latter compared with those of conventional work presently employed.]

Significant pyrite often does not dissolve in the Sobek (1978) nitric acid extraction; therefore, the standard conservative approach is to estimate pyrite using sulfur present in the sum of the nitric acid and residual sulfur fractions. Alunite, when present, appears as residual sulfur. Because alunite does not generate acidic effluents, overestimation of AGP can occur if all residual sulfur is assumed to be undigested pyrite. Evaluation of 16 samples from the Florida Canyon Mine revealed that petrographic examination coupled with a modification of the Sobek method to include a 6 hour hot (250°F) 'nitric acid extraction resulted in a more accurate estimation of AGP.
