The copper deposit at White Pine, Michigan, from which a little more than 5 per cent of United States primary copper currently is produced, is a large stratiform orebody, 4 to 25 feet thick and several miles across. The present ore column, containing about 1.2 per cent copper as chalcocite and native copper, is confined to the basal beds of the Nonesuch Shale. This upper Keweenawan (Upper Precambrian) formation is a distinctive gray siltstone unit, about 600 feet thick, overlying and overlain by thick red-bed sequences. All these rocks contain abundant volcanic debris, but the latest known igneous activity within 50 miles antedated the Nonesuch Shale. The rocks are unmetamorphosed and only moderately deformed, mainly by tilting and faults. Pyrite, presumably syngenetic, is the only prominent sulfide throughout most of the Nonesuch Shale. The basal beds of the formation, however, contain disseminated copper minerals instead of pyrite and constitute the cupriferous zone. On a regional scale, the top of the cupriferous zone cuts across bedding, and ranges from an inch or so above the base of the formation in some areas to more than 50 feet in others. However, within the cupriferous zone the distribution of copper shows remarkable stratigraphic control. Certain beds are copper-rich compared to the beds that lie between them and the differences persist throughout the White Pine region. Several darkgray thinly laminated beds in the lower 10 to 25 feet of the Nonesuch Shale are rich enough and sufficiently close enough together to constitute a mineable thickness where they lie within the cupriferous zone. Pyrite is the characteristic sulfide of the Nonesuch Shale as a whole. The principal sulfide mineral of the cupriferous zone at the base of the formation is chalcocite. The succession of minerals outward and upward from the center of the cupriferous zone is native copper-chalcocite-bornite-chalcopyrite- pyrite. The bornite and chalcopyrite are confined to a narrow fringe at the margin of the cupriferous zone. This pattern of mineral zones is believed to represent reaction between syngenetic pyrite and introduced copper. The main copper mineralization is independent of structure and apparently antedates deformation. Details of the geometry of the cupriferous zone indicate the possibility that copper was introduced from the underlying sandstone prior to lithification. The source of the mineralizing solutions and their copper is not known.

Mining in the Tri-State district of Missouri, Kansas, and Oklahoma has been nearly continuous from about 1848 until the present day, although the major activity was from about 1880 to 1955. The district, which has produced over $2 billion in zinc and lead concentrates, ranks as one of the greatest mining districts in the world. Unlike other Mississippi Valleytype deposits in the United States, which occur in Cambrian and Ordovician limestones and dolomites, the Tri-State district ores occur in Mississippian limestones containing abundant chert. Zinc is 5 to 6 times more abundant than lead. In the Picher Field, the principal sub-district which has accounted for 61 percent of the total district production, most of the ore has been mined from the single horizon, M bed. Most ore bodies, other than those of the "Sheet Ground" or blanket-type, are in large, essentially flat-lying breccia zones and have a definite mineral zonal pattern. An irregular, generally elongated central dolomitic core is surrounded progressively outward by the main ore run, the jasperoid zone, the muddy or shaly and bouldery zone, the sparry calcite limestone zone, and the fossiliferous, dominantly crinoidal, limestone zone. Some of the zones may be absent or nearly so and may overlap to some extent with an adjacent zone. Although the district has been studied by many authors, much controversy still exists about such items as genesis, paragenesis, and time of emplacement. These subjects are discussed in the paper.

EARLY in 1917, the United States Coal & Coke Co. secured options on several tracts in Harlan County, Ky., aggregating about 1.9,000 acres in area, and after careful prospecting by outcrop openings and diamond drilling, completed the purchase late in July of that year. This property is situated in the eastern end of Harlan County, south of the Poor Fork f Cumberland River, and extending across Big Black Mountain to the Clover Fork of Cumberland River, a distance of about 7 mi. (11.3 kg.). It extends from the Kentucky-Virginia line westward for about 6 mi. Looney Creek, which empties into Poor Fork, crosses the property for about 4 mi. (6.4 kg.), and as several of the seams within the property outcrop along this stream, it afforded an easy, and the logical, place for development. The property is on the northern side of the geological trough formed by the uplifting of Stone Mountain, on the southern, and Pine Mountain, on the northern side; the northern boundary along Poor Fork is practically at the base of Pine Mountain. This, area has been described in various geological reports.1 The main seam on this property is the one known variously as the "C," Benham, Keokee, Taggart, and Roda; it is, also called, by the Kentucky Geological Survey, the Kellioka seam of the western portion of Harlan County. This seam averages, in this property, about 5 ft. (1.5 m.) in thickness, although local rolls reduce this thickness considerably over small areas; and at the extreme western end of the property the seam splits. INTRODUCTION The development of refining processes involving gas injection into liquid metals has seen the evolution of a variety of designs [I]. During the last few years or so the top, bottom and side blown processes have, essentially, been combined to produce a series of mixed gas blowing schemes (eg. the LBE [2,3] and LD-OB processes [4,5]). Although, a variety of mixed gas blowing processes have been carefully engineered and recorded operational experience now attests to their effectiveness, optimising their design and operational performance is another matter. Detailed process analysis of such operations is impeded by the complex nature of the physical and chemical processes involved: . fluid flow behaviour of the liquid metal and injected gases, . chemical reactions in the vessel, . mass and heat transfer within the fluid phases in the vessel, . influence of the geometry (eg. location of the tuyeres, etc.), . monitoring the operational performance. By and large, design and operating parameters evolve from a combination of laboratory scale experiments, pilot plant work and, of course, practical engineering experience. Conventionally, the gas-liquid system used to model the industrial process is air-water, for a number of valid reasons including – . visual demonstration plus geometric and (to some extent) dynamic similarity, . the fact that the system demonstrates, at least, qualitatively many of the complex features of gas injection - interaction between the gas and the liquid - the nature of the gas flow behaviour - qualitative indications of mass transfer rates Important experimental contributions to the understanding of gas liquid systems include the work of Brimacombe [6], Wraith [7], T.Robertson [8], D.Robertson [9], Guthrie [10] and Szekely [11] (these references provide starting points to identify the major published work in this area). Although air-water systems have been instrumental in providing a great deal of qualitative insight into the fluid flow behaviour of the processes, reliable quantitative predictions are more problematic. A number of workers (notably Brimacombe and colleagues [6, 12])have demonstrated that different gas-liquid systems can lead to wide variations in behaviour. Other limitations of physical modelling include the assumptions of isothermal flow, scale- up of turbulent flow behaviour and the inability to directly include the effects of chemical reactions. The above limitations in physical modelling, therefore, yield a natural role for mathematical modelling provided that it can be made comprehensive enough whilst remaining cost-effective. The major physical processes involved in gas injection systems may be summarised as . behaviour of the gas envelope structure in moving through the liquid metal . the global movement of the liquid metal . momentum interaction between the liquid metal and the injected gas . heat transfer and mass exchange via the chemical react ions. The behaviour of gas envelopes forming at a tuyere and then moving through the liquid has been investigated thoroughly by a large number of workers. Such models are generally based upon simple physic- al concepts derived from visual observation. An early model by Davidson and Schuler (DS), based upon a force balance between the liquid inertia and a combination of the bouyancy and momentum forces on the envelope, has proved to be a useful tool in predicting bubble volumes at detachment [13]. The DS model has been successfully modified in a number of ways [14-17] to cope with heat transfer and reactive transfer rates, etc. Furthermore, the basic ideas summarised above have also been confirmed on industrial converters by both Guthrie [I8] and Brimacombe [19]. Models have also been developed to predict the behaviour of the "chemical" component of some gas-liquid systems. However, one thing is clear; all gas-liquid reactive systems are governed by the degree to which effective mixing occurs. As such, the processes are dominated by the behaviour of the heat and mass exchange of the two phase fluid flow system. It is the pattern of movement of the turbulent liquid metal plus its interaction with the injected gas which must be predicted reliably, if sufficiently comprehensive comp-

The phenomenon of flake formation which may occur during cooling or room temperature aging of large steel sections is caused by a combination of hydrogen and stress. As such, the transformation characteristics of austenite in a particular section play a major role in the occurrence of flakes. Isothermal and continuous cooling studies demonstrated that flake formation is particularly sensitive to nature, distribution, and relative proportions of the microconstituents in the cooled sections. In the absence of transformation stresses, abnormally high hydrogen contents could be tolerated without flaking. Flakes were not found in the absence of transformation stresses. No correlation existed between average hydrogen content and flake formation where cooling stresses were low. Hydrogen in the steel was a necessary but not sufficient condition for flake formation. DESPITE a long history of laboratory and commercial investigations, the mechanics of hairline crack or flake formation in large steel sections remains unresolved. Recent publications1-5 emphasize that flaking is still a serious problem.* immediate cause of flaking is the pressure exerted by entrapped hydrogen gas that collects in small internal cavities or voids during cooling. When the temperature of steel is low enough to preclude extensive plastic flow, the cavity pressures cause local brittle fractures (flakes). 2—The microsegregation and transformation stress theory. According to this theory, flaking results from stresses arising from the volume changes accompanying the formation of martensite and/or low temperature bainite after a large portion of the section has transformed at elevated temperatures. The proponents of the hydrogen theory suggest that stresses from other sources may be additive to the stresses produced by hydrogen and may, in some cases, provide the increment of stress necessary to produce flakes. However, the critical aspect of this theory is that no stress, except that produced by hydrogen pressure, is believed to be sufficient in itself to produce flakes. For practical considerations, this means that the only safe thermal cycle is one that reduces the hydrogen content to some low critical level below which flaking will not occur regardless of the state of transformation. On the other hand, the transformation stress theory does not rule out the embrittling effect of hydrogen. This theory simply proposes that flaking does not occur in the absence of transformation stresses. With the transformation stress theory as a basis, commercial antiflaking cycles would be designed to complete the transformation of austenite prior to cooling to ambient temperatures. Both of these theories appear compatible with industrial experience. Antiflaking cycles, such as cooling at extremely conservative rates or soaking for periods of time in the upper subcritical temperature ranges prior to cooling to ambient temperatures, may allow the following: 1—diffusion of hydrogen out of the section and, as a consequence, reduction of the hydrogen content to some safe minimum value (hydrogen pressure theory) and 2—complete decomposition of the austenite at rela-

THE particular field of application of machines utilizing air cur¬rents as the primary separating medium is in the cleaning of the fine sizes of bituminous coal. Approximately 12,000,000 tons of bituminous coal were cleaned by air machines during 1940. They have not found any application for cleaning anthracite. Since the development and introduction of the first successful com¬mercial pneumatic oscillating machine for cleaning bituminous coal in 1916, by the Sutton, Steele and Steele Co., Dallas, Texas, and the Ameri¬can Coal Cleaning Corporation, formerly of Welch, W. Va., four other successful pneumatic coal-cleaning machines have been developed and introduced to the American coal-mining industry: 1. Peale Davis: "Pneumo-Gravity" machine, 1924. 2. Arms "Concentrator," oscillating table, 1924. 3. Heyl and Patterson oscillating table, 199.7. 4. "Stump Air-Flow," pulsating air jig, 19391. Out of these five developments only the Sutton, Steele and Steele, or American Oscillating, and the Stump Air-Flow Jig remain on the market. They are the predominating pneumatic coal-cleaning machines in use in the United States. HISTORY OF AMERICAN TYPE SEPARATOR The first successful American machine, the CJ table (Fig. 1) was developed by the Sutton, Steele and Steele Co. The SJ table was the first standard model designed specifically for the cleaning of coal. It was installed in the original Crane Creek plant, owned and operated by the American Coal Co. at McComas, West Virginia. This plant was designed by The Roberts and Schaefer Co., Chicago, Ill., working in cooperation with the American Coal Cleaning Corpora¬tion, which had taken over the patent rights and sale of the pneumatic separators. Mechanical properties of the nether roof rocks play a substantial role in maintenance of mine openings. On longwall faces too low strength is a cause of rock- falls which bring about delays in face advance, and hazard to the miners, while too high strength may result in over hanging of roof rocks in gobs, sometimes over a large area, initiating dynamic periodical pressures. Hence, efforts have been undertaken to develop methods of caveability evaluation for proper selection of roof control system and of longwall-face supports. DESCRIPTIVE CLASSIFICATIONS One of the basic qualitative criteria for classification of roof types with different caveability is the criterion of geological structure. The 26-stages scale worked out for conditions of Donetz Coalfield. USSR, by E.T. Proyavkin et al.(l) may be an example of that type of classification. This scale is presented graphically in Fig. 1. The first types of roofs according to this scale are easily caving immediately after exposure of a small surface, while the last be- long to the strongest roofs which over-hang in waste and require artificial fracturing. Observations and measurements carried out also in Donetz mines lead W.T. Davidyanc (2) to following classification: Class I - weak and densely bedded rocks very easily caving after each advance of supports. The roof subsidence over a waste edge is: [ ] where: h is roof subsidence, m M is thickness of the seam being mined, m S is width of an opening, m Class II - medium caveability and small main roof movements [ ] Class III - hardly breakable rocks, thicker beds with higher strength: caving by large blocks. After exposure of larger roof surfaces the movements of the main roof strata may affect an opening. [ ] Class IV - very hardly breakable rocks - thick, monolithic sandstones: they cause considerable difficulties in working with caving. [ ] Class V - thin-bedded rocks featured by the capacity of a smooth subsidence without disintegration into loose blocks with keeping contact between the particular blocks in a bed. In this classification mining with full roof caving is recommended for class I-III and only exceptionally for class IV. In many coal fields, qualitative and quantitative observations of roof rocks behavior have been carried out: as a result relations and characteristics found in certain mines are given. As an example, Kizielov Coalfield data in the USSR given by B.S. Vinokur (3) may be mentioned. In working thin pitching seams man- less system of undercutting the seam by means of rope saw is used there. The author separated four classes of roofs and gave, for every class, the empirical relation between the extracted area and the time of roof stability. The size of the stable area of exposed roof for particular classes is as follows: 120 to 150 m2 (1291 to 1614 ft2 ), 170 to 200 m2 (1829 to 2152 ft2), 250 to 280 m2 (2690 to 3013 ft2 ) and 350 to 400 m2 (3766 to 4300 ft ). For Kuznetz coalfield in the USSR the following classification of roofs was developed at the WIMI Institute in Leningrad: Class I - completely unstable: impact strength in- dex of rock f = up to 1.5 - the strip of roof 1.4 to 2.0 m (4.59 to 6.56 it) wide, exposed after shearer's cut holds stable during the time not longer than 5 min. Class II - low stability: f = 1.5 to 2.5 - the strip of roof 1.4 to 2.0 m (4.59 to 6.56 ft) wide and up to 4.0 m (13 it) long, exposed after shearer's cut holds stable during 5 to 20 min. Class III - medium stability: f = 2.51 to 3.5 - the strip of roof 1.4 to 2.0 m (4.59 to 6.56 it) wide and 4.0 to 25 m (13 to 82 ft) long, exposed after shearer's cut holds stable from 20 min. to 2 hours. Class IV - stable: f = 3.51 to 4.5 - the strip of roof 1.4 to 2.0 m (4.59 to 6.56 ft) wide and 25 m (82 it) long exposed after shearer's cut is stable during the time longer than 2 hours. The Pechelbronn (Alsace) field is the only important French producing field. During 1934, development was carried on as in previous years. The total output of this field reached 553,575 bbl. in 1934, showing a slight decrease from the 1933 figures. Of the total, 315,000 bbl. (56 per cent) was extracted by drilling, while 238,875 bbl. (46 per cent) was obtained by means of shafts and galleries. Exploration of deep Jurassic and Triassic horizons was still in progress at the end of 1934. A deep well reached the Upper Triassic at a depth of 34 m. (2736 ft.). (Information kindly supplied by M. S. Mena, Directeur Technique.) As mentioned before, the small Gabian field (Herault) is gradually being exhausted. No drilling operations were undertaken in 1934, the small production being restricted to the pumping of old wells. Two exploration wells, noted as "drilling" at the end of 1933, were completed in 1934; viz., Lavelanet (Ariége) at 3785 ft. and Santenay (Niévre) at 2578 feet. French Possessions Algeria.—No drilling at Tliouanet. Out of a total of 100 wells drilled in the area, only 8 are still producing. No exploration work is reported during 1934 in Algeria. Tunisia.—Two wells completed; one well drilling at the end of 1934. A total of 11 wells is reported to have been drilled before the beginning of 1935; out of these, 8 were completed before the present program was begun. Morocco.—Exploration work progressed actively last year. The outstanding event was the coming in of Ts. 26 well at 1243 ft. This well took fire, therefore great difficulties were encountered in the accurate measurement of initial production; the figure of 1500 bbl. of oil given here is a near estimate. Oil flowed accompanied by a great amount of water. The apparent decrease of drilling operations in 1934 is explained by the increase in field activities after the results of Ts. 26 were known;

Current research in the phenomenon of liquefaction has indicated some of the in situ material properties which should be considered in the planning of waste deposits. Practical experience in tailings disposal, however, must be combined with the results of theoretical and laboratory studies to develop the most economical and safe techniques against liquefaction failure. One of the many responsibilities of mining engineers and mill superintendents is providing for the safe and economic disposal of wastes (or tailings) that remain after a mineral has been extracted from an ore. The cost of disposal of these tailings exerts a considerable influence on the minimum grade of ore extracted from the mine. It varies to a great extent with each project and is dependent on many diverse factors, such as the local topographical, meteorological and seismological conditions together with the applicable water pollution laws of the area. The process used to extract a mineral from an ore determines the physical characteristics of the tailings and, thus, is one of the more important factors to be considered in the planning of disposal facilities. Today's trends in ore-processing operations complicate the problems of waste disposal: recently developed extraction methods result in the production of finer tailings, the use of lower grade ores produces greater volumes of wastes, and the enhanced land values in the vicinity of industrial plants preclude the former practice of spreading wastes laterally and force the expansion of waste deposits upwards to greater heights. The frequent occurrence of stability problems in waste deposits indicates that many mining organizations may not be employing current soil mechanics concepts and practices. One of the most spectacular, and often most disastrous, types of tailings dike failure is that resulting from liquefaction of the fine particles combined with a breach of the main retaining dike. TAILINGS DISPOSAL Since the many variations in site conditions, ore bodies and extraction processes dictate the general disposal procedures and mill superintendents incorporate special facilities to provide the most economical disposal method consistent with accepted safety standards, it is only natural that there are almost as many different disposal techniques as there are disposal areas. Methods used in the construction of retaining dikes include: (1) transporting granular material from an adjacent borrow pit and (2) mechanically segregating the total effluent and allowing the coarse fraction to form a retaining dike by hydraulic deposition. The location of a plant and the surrounding topography exert the greatest influence on the layout of tailings disposal facilities. Most of the above-ground waste deposits can be classified as side-hill, (Fig. 1,) cross-valley, (Fig. 2,) or stockpile deposits. Side-hill disposal areas are probably the most common type of layout because of the natural advantage of gravity flow, without the disadvantage of river diversion usually needed for tailings ponds formed behind cross-valley dikes. Stockpiles, which are placed on relatively level ground, require four retaining dikes and the effluent generally has to be pumped up into the disposal area. Changing production techniques or developments adjacent to disposal areas have produced variations or partial combinations of these three categories. MOST recently elected to the limited group of Honorary Members in the A.I.M.E. is the distinguished Australian metallurgist, Guillaume Daniel Delprat. His citation reads: "in recognition of his distinguished achievement as metallurgist, engineer, and administrator in the production of ferrous and nonferrous metals," Mr. Delprat's ability and experience in both the ferrous and nonferrous fields at once distinguishes him from most of his professional brothers. Mr. Delprat's nativity was neither Australian nor English, for he was born in Delft, Holland, in 1856, and educated in Amsterdam. At the age of 22 he went to Spain, as metallurgist for the Tharsis Sulphur and Copper Co., Ltd. Afterwards he spent some time with the Bede Metal and Chemical Co., which had mines in both Spain and Norway, and of which company he became general manager. Other positions of responsibility held by Mr. Delprat before he went to Australia included the managing directorship of the Cordova Exploration Co., with properties in Spain and Canada; of the Rincon Silver-Lead Mining Co., in Spain; and of the Deloro Gold Mines, in Canada.

Cananea is located at an elevation of 5,200 ft in the north-central part of the state of Sonora, Mexico, about 135 miles northeast of Hermosillo, the state capital, and about 30 miles south of the United States border. A graded road runs to Cananea from the border town of Naco, near Bisbee, and a branch road turns east to Cananea at Imuris, a town 36 miles south of the border on the Nogales-Hermosillo highway. Railway service is provided by a spur from the Nogales-Naco branch of the Ferrocarril del Pacífico Railroad. Fuel for the power plant, smelter, and town (population approximately 20,000) is natural gas, supplied through a pipeline from the United States. The Compa[n]ía Minera de Cananea generates electric power for its own installations and also supplies both electricity and water to the town. HISTORY The earliest record of mining in Cananea dates back to 1760, when Jesuit fathers worked the Cobre Grande mine for silver in spite of resistance from hostile Indians. About 1800, several mines were worked on a relatively large scale by the House of Guea of Chihuahua. From then until about 1890 when William C. Greene of Fairbanks, Ariz., acquired control of a large group of properties, mining continued in a rather sporadic manner. The mineralized district is approximately 6 miles wide and 15 miles long, and the orebodies are associated with breccia pipes and granitic intrusive rock. In the early days, many small mines operated within the area on high-grade orebodies. The paper describes the use of the Electric Pilot in the Permian Basin for making permeability surveys of wells and for the selective acidization of wells. A general summary of the information obtained from the many permeability surveys run in this area is given, and the possible application of this information to reservoir control problems is discussed. The application of the Electric Pilot on specific wells, involving well completion, acidizing and workover operations is also included. Introduction The Electric pilot is a comparatively new tool in oil-producing areas. From the beginning, the possibilities of this new service caught the imagination of many of the oil operators and acidizing engineers. Through the continued and ever increasing use of the pilot during the past year, and the close cooperation of the oil operators who have used this service, the efficiency and utility of the Electric Pilot service has been increased to a point where it is now a well established and recognized service. There are two major uses for the Electric Pilot: (I) permeability survey; (2) selective acid treatments. Permeability surveys are made to determine the thickness of the various permeable sections at the borehole, the vertical position of these zones at the bore hole, and the relative capacities of the various zones. Nomenclature Data obtained from the permeability survey are used to calculate three different indexes that pertain to the volume of fluid injected into the various permeable zones. A nomenclature for these various indexes has been set up, which correspond with the various productivity indexes, except that they are a measure of injected fluid rather than produced fluid. The nomenclature and definition of the indexes used in connection with a permeability survey by the Electric Pilot are as follows: 1. Capacity.—The volume of water injected into an individual permeable zone, in gallons Per minute. 2. Capacity Index.—The volume of water injected into an individual permeable Zone, in gallons Per minute Per pound Per Square inch differential Pressure. 3. Specific Capacity Index.—The volume of water injected into an individual permable zone in gallons Per minute Per pound per square inch differential per foot of thickness of the zone at the borehole. In a previous communication by one of us,1 a theory of inverse segregation was presented by which the maximum segregation and segregation distribution throughout a unidirectionally solidified, binary-alloy ingot could be calculated. The theory, which is based on the mechanism of volume contraction and interdendritic flow, quantitatively accounts for the observed maximum segregation in the A1 (rich)-CU' and Al-Zn2 alloy systems, and for the segregation distribution along the ingot lengths for the A1-Cu system.''4 One of the drawbacks to a more extensive use of the segregation equations is their complexity, particularly for the calculation of the segregation distribution throughout the length of the ingot, involving long tedious numerical calculations to obtain the segregation. Computer pro- grams, written in Fortran II for use on an IBM 1620 computer, have been developed by the authors (and are available from them), providing quick and accurate methods for the determination of the theoretical maximum segregation in any binary-alloy system, and also for the segregation distribution in any unidirectionally solidified binary-alloy ingot. The segregation distribution is controlled by the lengths of the various solidification zones'74 which are in turn controlled by the cooling rate, and are determined from temperature-distribution curves obtained during solidification. The theoretical segregation distributions shown in Fig. 1 illustrate the effect of the zone lengths on the distribution Curve 1, indicative of a slowly cooled ingot, represents an ingot having long solidification zones, while Curve 2, indicative of a rapidly cooled ingot, represents an ingot having relatively short zones. Although these distributions are calculated for an A1-10 pct Cu ingot, the shape of the distribution would be similar for any binary-alloy ingot. These curves show clearly why early workers obtained results which indicated that the maximum (chill-face) segregation approached zero at very fast cooling rates.3 Actually, the maximum segregation is independent of cooling rate,' but even at short distances from the chill face the amount of segregation drops considerably, particularly in a rapidly cooled ingot, making it very difficult to establish the amount of segregation occurring at the chill-face. Experimental data are presented for hydrate formation conditions for mixtures of hydrogen sulfide and methane. Vapor-solid equilibrium constants for hydrogen sulfide are also presented. Equilibrium constants, defined here as the ratio of the mole fraction of hydrogen sulfide in the vapor phase (dry basis) to the mole fraction of hydrogen sulfide in the solid phase (dry basis), were calculated using the vapor-solid equilibrium constants for methane presented in an earlier paper. The conditions at which a natural gas will form gas hydrates with water may be computed from its composition, when hydrogen sulfide is present in addition to carbon dioxide and the paraffin hydrocarbons. INTRODUCTION Many gases are known to form solid hydrates in the presence of liquid water at temperatures above 32°F. This hydrate formation is of importance to the natural gas industry inasmuch as most of the constituents found in natural gases will form hydrates. The attention of the industry was called to hydrates by Hammer-schmidtl0 in 1934. A number of papers have been written giving the temperatures and pressures at which these hydrates will form3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,13,14,15,18,19 and a bibliography on the subject has been compiled13. Deaton and Frost4,5,6,7,8 report work for various pure gases and for some natural gases. Katz and co-workers3,4,13,14,18,19 have reported data for various gases at high pressure. They developed a method of predicting conditions for hydrate formation from equilibrium constants3,19 and from gab gravity." The effects of anti-freeze agents on the formation of hydrogen sulfide hydrate were reported by Bond and Nelson.' The hydrogen sulfide-water system, including hydrate, has been the subject of recent investigation by Sage and co-workers." Mixtures of hydrates behave as solid solutions and an equilibrium exists between the vapor phase and the solid phase that appears to be comparable to the equilibrium between vapor and liquid phases.3,10 By means of the vapor-solid equilibrium constants which have been published for methane, ethane, propane, iso-butane, and carbon dioxidel6 it is possible to determine the temperature and pressure at which hydrates will form for a specific gas mixture when water is present. Hydrogen sulfide which is frequently found in natural gases has a very strong tendency to form hydrate and must enter the solid solution when present in a natural gas forming a hydrate. To determine the effect of hydrogen sulfide when computing the conditions for gas hydrate formation, it is necessary to have the equilibrium constant giving the ratio of the concentration of hydrogen sulfide in the gas phase to the concentration in the solid phase. This paper presents data on hydrate formation for mixtures of hydrogen sulfide and methane and presents the equilibrium constants which were calculated from these data. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The apparatus used to determine the conditions of hydrate formation for the methane-hydrogen sulfide system was similar to that employed by previous investigators.3,18,19 A charge gas cylinder was used to supply the hydrogen sulfide-methane mixtures, called the charge gas, and to supply the pressure up to 1.000 psia. The Illinois-Kentucky mining district has, since 1880, accounted for 80 per cent of all U.S. production of fluorspar. The ore deposits are of two types: vein deposits formed by fissure fillings along faults and bedding-replacement deposits formed by the replacement of strata at certain favored stratigraphic positions along minor faults and fractures. Fluorite is the chief valuable mineral in the deposits. Sphalerite and galena commonly are present in small amounts but, in some ore bodies, may form a substantial part of the valuable constituents of the ore. Calcite is the chief gangue mineral; quartz and barite Exposed strata range from Devonian are present in various amounts. through Pennsylvanian in age. Igneous intrusive rocks occur as mafic dikes and sills and intrusive breccia dikes and plugs. Structurally, the district is situated on a generally northwest- trending arch that has been sliced into a series of long, narrow blocks by normal faults that trend northeastward. The structural The localization of the ore deposits by faults and fractures, the association of fluorite mineralization with intrusive breccias, and various lines of petrographic and geochemical evidence indicate that the fluorite-zinc-lead deposits were epigenetic and deposited by solutions emanating from a deep alkalic magma.

Introduction Great Salt Lake Minerals & Chemicals Corp. (GSL), a subsidiary of Gulf Resources & Chemical Corp., is located on the east side of the Great Salt Lake, approximately 20 miles from Ogden, UT. GSL processes brine from the north arm of the lake to produce potash, salt cake, salt, and magnesium chloride brine. Potash fertilizer, in the form of K2SO4 is GSL's primary product. The CSL Sulfate of Potash Complex: The GSL potash complex (depicted in [Fig. 1]) is divided into a solar evaporation pond system and the process plants. The solar evaporation system consists of a 17,000-acre (68.8 km2) ponding operation where the various salts deposit during the summer evaporation season and a harvesting operation which recovers the deposits during the remainder of the year. The harvest is either preconcentrated in the flotation plant or processed directly in the chemical plant where sulfate of potash (SOP) is produced. The chemistry of the lake brine results in a solar deposit containing primarily kainite (KC1 . MgSO4 . 3H20), schoenite (K2SO4 . MgS04 . 6H20), and halite (NaCI), with some carnallite (KC1 . MgC12 . 6H20) and epsomite (MgSOq . 7H20). Other minerals may be deposited, depending upon the weather during the evaporation season. Each year, the solar deposit in the evaporation ponds will greatly depend upon the summer weather conditions, which have in the past proven to be quite unpredictable. Weather may alter both the quantity of the solar deposit and the composition of this deposit. During a "short" evaporation season, the tonnage deposited decreases, but depending upon the short-term weather, the potash mineral content can vary greatly. PART I SUMMARY CERTAIN relations between the formation of ore deposits and other geological processes are pretty generally accepted, namely: that many ore deposits are closely associated with igneous activity; that ore deposits accompany certain types of intrusive bodies, notably batholiths and stocks, and that they are concentrated near the tops of such bodies; that igneous activity occurs in belts of strong folding and faulting; that folding and faulting are greatest in basins of extensive sedimentation and least in areas of erosion or slight sedimentation; that areas of erosion or slight sedimentation and of heavy sedimentation persist over long periods and exert a major control over structure, igneous activity, and ore deposition; that cycles of erosion, deposition, folding and faulting, igneous activity, and ore deposition, have been repeated through geologic time resulting in rather definite periods in which metal deposits have formed. In short, ore deposition is but one phase of a series of closely related geological events. It is attempted in this chapter to point out the relations of these interreacting geologic processes to the distribution of ore deposits in the western United States. Three great periods of mineralization are recognized; pre-Cambrian, post-Jurassic, and late Cretaceous-Tertiary. In distribution the deposits of the three periods, with certain exceptions, show a concentration about two large positive areas, the Colorado plateau and the Columbia plateau, which suggests a causal relation. The most general age divisions of the rocks of the Cordilleran region of the United States are (1) pre-Cambrian, and (2) Cambrian and later rocks. The pre-Cambrian rocks are exposed mainly through the Rocky Mountain belt from the Canadian boundary southward to Arizona and westward through Arizona to southern California. They have commonly

Abstract-The sharp drop in world phosphate demand that took place in 1975, due to temporarily high prices, now seems to be reversing itself. And prices for both phosphate rock and phosphate fertilizers, which declined dramatically from their 1975 highs, now appear to be bottoming out. This recent price weakness has delayed new mining ventures that had previously been planned for completion by around 1980. While there is ample capacity to supply near-term rock needs, the stage seems to be emerging for a better supply-demand and price environment in the late 1970's and early 1980's.

The Christian church found consolation in that superstition applied in a new form to its new sorrows, and paid its most enthusiastic devotion to the memories of its young and beautiful martyrs. The natural science of our century is robbing us fast of this and all other superstitions, sweet as well as bitter, and leaving us for consolation to the teaching—colder, yet kinder—of personal fortitude and that optimism Which intelligently translates the Cosmos of Humboldt back into its old name of the Harmonia of Pythagoras. The Homeric Kataclothes, the three fates, are dead and gone for us, with that old world which comprehended none of the laws of cause and effect, and sorrowed for those who were cut off from the land of the living without hope of more than a shadowy existence beyond the river of death. All the more the ancients cherished the memory of their dead and lavished their choicest art upon their monuments. We moderns have lost the monumental arts, but we better keep the monuments which our dead leave behind them. No one of us who has done good work can fail to be remembered; and in an Institute like this, which keeps the press at work, an immortality in the memory of men is more possible, more certain, for every one of its members than the greatest heroes of antiquity could anticipate for themselves. In old apocalyptic times the works of men followed them through death to the throne of God to be their advocates in judgment, but in these modern times our works remain this side the grave, to follow the name of the departed one as it takes its course along the history of his peculiar art or science advancing slowly to perfection.
