In order to investigate the variation of the load-displacement relations of piles in a site, vertical load tests were carried out on 25 small diameter steel pipe piles. Out of 25 piles, 15 piles were close-ended pipe piles attached with a blade at the pile toe and 10 piles were open-ended pipe piles. To carry out these load tests in a short period, two types of rapid load test methods, Spring hammer load test and Falling mass load test, were employed. The load tests of all piles were completed in two days with 180 blows in total. In order to estimate a static load-displacement of a pile, non-linear damping method was used. It is shown from the test results that the performance of the pipe piles such as the ultimate pile resistance and the initial pile head stiffness is improved by re-driving.

Bolting solutions traditionally offered only wet drilling or dry drilling options; each with advantages and disadvantages. Joy Mining Machinery has developed a Mist Drilling System that incorporates the best of both types of drilling. Compared to wet drilling, mist drilling offers as much as a 90% reduction in water use. Freeport IndonesiaÆs DOZ (Deep Ore Zone) mine is scheduled to commence production in the second half of 2000. The DOZ will produce 25 000 tpd using mechanised block cave mining methods and will have a number of major improvements when compared to previous block cave mines in the district. The DOZ will have an independent and improved ventilation system, a flexible and efficient truck haulage system, and a more reliable crushing and conveying system than in previous underground mines in the district. This paper will describe the mine plan, haulage, and ventilation systems, and compare them to those used in other operations in the district.

In studies conducted by the Bureau of Mines, two test areas were hydraulically stimulated and exposed by mining: One in the Pittsburgh coalbed at the Vesta No. 5 mine, Washington County, Pa.; and one in the Illinois No. 6 coalbed at the Inland mine, Jefferson County, Ill. Induced fractures were contained totally within the coalbed with no adverse effect on the stability of associated rock strata. Induced fractures were vertical and were propagated normal to the direction of least residual tectonic stress. Gas production was increased fivefold to twentyfold by hydraulic stimulation.

Six underground coal mine shuttle cars (three high seam and three low seam) were used to assess visibility using the concept of visual attention locations (VALs) and an improved human eye reference measurement instrument (HERMI Mark II). Each machine was assessed in the inby and outby direction of travel with no canopy and with the canopy in its highest, and lowest position. In addition, the illumination level at each VAL was determined. Results showed that the most important variable determining visibility was operator eye position. When this variable is controlled, the addition of a canopy has no effect on visibility. Further, with eye position controlled, there is no difference in visibility between high and low seam machines. The visibility and illumination assessments found blind spots in the operator's field of view located on the opposite side of the car from the operator and ahead of the machine. Suggestions for reducing the blind spots were made. The report also included a procedure manual for using HERMI and the system of VALs to assess visibility from underground shuttle cars, continuous miners, and scoops.

Constant-volume charges of precipitated PETN (pentaeythrite tetranitrate) at three specific gravities (0.50, 1.00, and 1.50) were used in laboratory tests to examine the effects of changes in explosive properties on free-surface displacement pulses and on crater dimensions. The tests were performed in large blocks of cement-mortar. The values for the detonation velocity, detonation pressure, specific energy, energy density, and energy release rate were calculated from the explosive loading density. Calculated explosive properties were correlated with free-surface displacement pulse measurements, strain energy, and measured crater dimensions. Increases in explosive properties resulted in increased free-surface displacement pulse parameters and crater dimensions. The loading density, detonation velocity, energy density, detonation pressure, and energy release rate were found to be best indicators of explosive performance. Simple acoustic relationships involving impedance ratios were examined and could not be used to predict peak displacement amplitude or strain energy. Data are presented in the customary English units as well as the International System of Units (SI).

The Morenci concentrate leach plant construction was completed and successfully commissioned in October 2007. The plant was designed to operate at medium temperature, 160ºC and pressure, 2,100 kPa. The concentrate leach plant utilized many innovative design features. This paper examines the first year?s operation, the challenges, the successes and the lessons learned. The future plans for Morenci concentrate leaching will also be presented.

Outsourcing of specialist and non-continuous services is common practice in international mining operations. There is an increasing trend towards this practice in South Africa as a result of the major organisational changes that have taken place in the industry, and as lower revenues and production cost pressures have reduced profit margins. Many specialist functions have been outsourced in the industry for a long time, an example being shaft sinking, which is undertaken by specialist shaft sinking contractors. In the professional services area, some activities have been outsourced, for example the design and construction supervision of tailings dams, but mining related activities such as geology, mine planning and scheduling, engineering, ventilation, and rock engineering, have traditionally been carried out by in-house staff. In this paper some of the industry problems which have led to an increase in outsourcing of professional services are considered. Then the pros and cons of outsourcing are dealt with before outlining the factors which should be taken into account in choosing an outsourcing partner.

Recovery of industrially useful metals from various secondary sources is an important issue in Korea whose natural resources are limited and needs in the strategic metals are on the rise. In order to meet such needs, researchers at the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources have launched a number of projects to help the nation to recover various metals from secondary sources. In this study, silver is successfully recovered from spent silver-oxide batteries first by distillation to remove mercury. The distilled residue was next subjected to leaching of silver using nitric acid. The study involves finding optimum conditions to leach silver from the distilled residue and subsequently to recover silver from the leach liquor by chemical precipitation. The chemically precipitated products are then subjected to reduction roasting to recover silver metal.

An overall summary and the individual reports of eight workshops to determine research and development needs in western mining ore presented. Problem areas are identified, and recommendations regarding priorities, funding sources, and prime movers are made. The objective of this contract was to identify research and development needs for advancing mining technology as well as health and safety measures for western U.S. Surface and underground mining. This was accomplished by convening a series of workshops where problems could be thrashed out by producers of trona, uranium, open pit copper, underground salt (from the Midwest and New York), underground metal and nonmetal, etc. In addition to problems, future priorities, funding, and the desicion as to who should be the prime mover on R & D were discussed.

The strength characteristics of hydraulic sandfill modified by varying quantities of type III portland cement and two flocculants were investigated by the Bureau of Mines. Three different sand-cement ratios were examined using different percentages of flocculant. Two other experimental variables were curing time and weight-percent solids for hydraulic mixture. Results of unconfined compression tests with strain are discussed. Maximum strength was achieved with 0.5 weight-percent of ferric sulfate per ton of solids when the slurry mixture was 75 weight-percent solids. The bearing capacity of hydraulic sandfill is reduced by increasing the water content and decreasing the amount of cement mixed with sandfill.

Two-phase (water and air) flow in a self aerated WEMCO flotation machine has been investigated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). A 0.8 m3 model is considered. The flow is modeled by Euler-Euler approach, and transport equations are solved using a commercial software ANSYS-CFX5 [1]. Because of the lack of circumferential periodicity in this machine, the entire machine is modeled and unsteady simulations are conducted in the whole volume of the bulb. Uniform bubble diameter is specified, and the effects of bubble diameter are determined by conducting simulations for three diameters of 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0 mm. The unsteady air flow rate through the machine is predicted as an outcome of the simulations. Air volume fraction contours and velocity field in different parts of the machine are presented and discussed.

Electrodeposition of cobalt from cobalt tetrafluoroborate (Co(BF4)2) was investigated using 1- butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate (BMIMBF4) ionic liquid. The experiments were conducted at 353 K. Chronoamperometry experiments confirm that the electrodeposition of cobalt on tungsten electrode proceeds via three-dimensional instantaneous nucleation with diffusion-controlled growth process. The average diffusion coefficient of Co(II) was found to be 7.5 × 10-8 cm2s-1 at 353 K, which is in good agreement with the estimated value from cyclic voltammetry. The electrochemical deposit was characterized using SEM-EDS and XRD methods. The SEM image shows formation of a dense and compact deposit at - 0.75 V. The EDS and XRD analysis confirm that the obtained deposit is pure cobalt metal.

Of special interest among these methods may be listed: 1. A method developed for determining, the weight concentration of solid and liquid impurities in. hot, crude synthesis gas containing a high concentration of moisture. 2. A method developed for the same purpose but for highly purified synthesis gas or atmospheric air. 3. A method for obtaining a uniform dispersion of dry duet or, a microscope slide for particle-size determination or other purposes.

Na atualidade a produção e a utilização de DRI estão aumentando nos países desenvolvidos, principalmente devido à redução do preço do gás natural e do sucesso da nova tecnologia de extração de gás de xisto. Os custos operacionais e os problemas ambientais são, efetivamente, os fatores tecnológicos importantes a serem considerados na otimização da produção de DRI. Portanto, o teor de carbono do DRI tornou-se essencial em virtude da capacidade de gerar energia química no banho de aço, complementando assim a eletricidade em FEA, e as contribuições exotérmicas da oxidação de Si e C nos conversores LD. Este trabalho faz parte de um programa completo de cooperação entre a companhia de mineração Samarco e o Grupo de Siderurgia da PUC-Rio, lidando com as equações cinéticas da metalização e carburização simultânea em fornos de redução direta. Para este efeito, o reator foi dividido em três zonas internas: Redução, Transição e zona de resfriamento. Além disso, também foram consideradas três regiões concêntricas: periférica, média e centro. Á partir desses resultados, para um tipo de pelotas RD específico, mistura de gases utilizados nas instalações industriais e similar flui-dinâmica do processo, as equações cinéticas de metalização e carburização foram estabelecidas para cada zona. Um programa computacional METCARB, totalmente baseado nessas equações cinéticas, foi então concebido. Finalmente, uma validação adicional procedeu-se tendo em conta duas corridas operacionais industriais.

As part of an over-all laboratory and plant test program to determine mixing ad other techniques for a more economic use of bentonite as an iron ore pellet binder, a settling test for measuring the bentonite content within a pellet or a batch of pellets has been developed. Through this test, it has been shown that dry fracture load is directly proportional to bentonite content in batches of pellets, but inversely propor tional to bentonite content in individual pellets of the same batch. This apparent paradox is explained by a negative correlation between a pellet's size and its bentonite content and the fact that large pellets can withstand a higher fracture load than small pellets. In past attempts to characterize green and dry iron ore pellets, the authors found large variations in the results of strength tests on closely sized pellets from the same batch.' Reasons advanced for such variations in the quality of pellets in which the binder is bentonite were the presence of internal flaws and the nonuniform distribution of the binder. Even when resulting pellet strength is good, there is still the question of whether the same strength could have been attained through a more effective use of a smaller amount of bentonite. The authors' own and other studies 2-3 have pointed out the strong dependence of pellet strength on the degree of "mixedness" of the iron ore concentrate and the bentonite binder. This report summarizes an investigation to determine the occurrence and recoverability of heavy minerals in sand and gravel operations in the Southeastern United States. A total of 61 samples from 34 sand and gravel operations in Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina were studied. Heavy minerals, in amounts ranging from 3 to 400 pounds per ton, were found in all of the samples. Eighty percent of the samples contained 20 to 40 pounds per ton of heavy min¬eral. Valuable heavy minerals, in order of decreasing amounts, were ilmenite, kyanite, zircon, rutile, and monazite. Large-scale concentration tests were made on five samples from four major producers. Gravity concentration by Humphreys spirals and tables resulted in bulk heavy mineral concentrates that graded from 82 to 98 percent total heavy minerals. Mineral recoveries ranged, in percent, as follows: Ilmenite 60 to 95; zircon 96 to 100; kyanite 37 to 77; rutile 89 to 100; and monazite 96 to 100. Separation studies on the gravity concentrates showed they would respond to high-tension and high-intensity magnetic separation techniques to produce individual mineral concentrates. The recovery of each individual mineral from fractionation of the heavy mineral gravity concentrates, in percent, was: Ilmenite 77 to 94; rutile 41 to 68; kyanite 62 to 79; zircon 49 to 83; and rare-earth products, monazite and xenotime, 42 to 96. The grade of each mineral concentrate was: Ilmenite 51.1 to 68.7 percent Ti02; rutile 93.7 to 94.3 percent Ti02; kyanite 55 percent A1203; zircon 58 to 61 percent Zr02; and rare-earth products containing 73.8 to 90.8 percent monazite and 4.8 to 12.7 percent xenotime.

Introduction A comprehensive study of the economics of processes for smelting iron ores has been made by the Ontario Research Foundation on behalf of the Ontario Research Commission. This survey has included investigations of all processes in commercial use, and proposed processes which are still in the experimental stage. The two main objects of this work were to discover (l) whether any known processes would be particularly suited to present and future Canadian conditions, and (2) whether any new process would be of assistance in solving the present scrap shortage in Canada. The future prospects of the Canadian iron smelting industry have changed radically in the past ten years. For nearly twenty years before 1939 no iron ore was mined in Canada. The ore used was imported, mainly from the United States and Newfoundland. The economics of iron blast-furnace smelting always force the location of blast furnaces near the source of coal for making high-grade metallurgical coke, and near the market for iron and steel, rather than near the iron ore. Blast-furnace installations in Canada are confined to the north shores of the Great Lakes with ready access to United States coal and ore and the major Canadian markets, and to Nova Scotia near the coalfields of that Province. This distribution of primary smelting capacity naturally results in relatively high prices for iron and steel in the West, the North, and in Quebec.
