Weinberg, born and educated in Germany, worked in'the American West for 10 years as a mining engineer and metallurgist. He was the first head of the Queensland Smelting Co. and from 1889 through 1915 was a prominent mining figure in Queensland. This paper discusses the identification and assessment of risk for mining developments particularly for open pit mining. A distinction between sensitivity studies and risk analysis is developed, demonstrating the importance of geological and mining engineering judgement -as applied by experienced practitioners to the analysis and assessment of risk in such projects. Technical and financial risk analysis are discussed under: ò mineral resources and ore reserves; ò mining and processing methods; ò project construction; ò financing; and ò costs and commodity pricing predictions.

Seven papers included in Session 8 of the Third International Mine Water Congress under the heading "Achievements in Mine Water Management & Research" have been reviewed. Only one paper, a case study by Masters on biological treatment of inorganically polluted effluent, has any connection with research in the sense of seeking new, generally applicable knowledge which would advance the frontiers of mine water management. The remainder deal with various aspects of the management of mine water ranging from investigation of the geology of a specific aquifer system through operating dewatering systems to the management of specific effluent disposal problems.

The AusIMM has much to celebrate and many things to recall. Limited's project in the Pilbara because the mining town of Newman was built almost entirely by the Company whereas residential areas built by the Company at Port Hedland were developed as an adjunct to an existing town. Predictive chemical models facilitate the selection, design and assessment of aqueous chemical processes. The development of expertise in aqueous themochemistry has not matched the explosion in computer technology for modelling, which has placed pressure on the need for acquisition of skills to critically assess the appropriateness of the models produced. The 'blind faith' culture which appears to be developing must be arrested by appropriate programs at the tertiary level and professional development strategies in the minerals industry.

A new flotation method is introduced for separating zircon from rutile and other Ti-bearing minerals at normal temperature, using a mixture of cationic and anionic collectors without any acid, alkali or fluoride as regulators. By combining the method with gravity concentration and magnetic separation to process the seabeach placer, the technological flowsheet can be simplified and the pollution of environment and the corrosion of acids, alkalis and fluorides on equipment can be removed.

Synthetic hollow microspheres have demonstrated reliable sensitization and detonation characteristics in industrial explosives for almost two decades. During that time, water gel formulations and use conditions have changed. The introduction of emulsion explosives has also dictated technical improvements in microsphere sensitizers. In contrast to microspheres, gassing or other sensitizing techniques often cannot satisfy the manufacturing and blasting characteristics required of today's explosives. This paper discusses the sensitizing properties of microspheres, formulating guidelines and quality considerations. Packaging, sampling, transfer, metering, mixing and pumping information is also provided.

The initial development fl6tation testwork on Mt. Windarra op was completed on composited drill core intersections at the.Australian Mineral Development Laboratory. An exploratory winze provided samples, from the 130 M. level of the Mt. Windarra mine, for pilot plant and bench development tests. A limited test programme was initiated on the South Windarra drill core composites. Detailed mineralogy has been completed on selected samples from both ore deposits.

Acid rock drainage (ARD) derived from sulphide oxidation and the associated metal leaching is the most significant environmental issue facing the mining industry today. Under given hydrological and biogeochemical conditions, the local geology and mineralogy largely control the formation of ARD. The involvement of a geologist is therefore essential in minesite ARD assessment and prevention. The relevant tasks that a mine geologist may undertake at three major phases of a mining project are briefly described. Additional knowledge that a mine geologist should acquire in order to achieve proficiency in ARD assessment is also suggested.
