Much has been written and many discussions have been held concerning the prevention of accidents in coal mines , and considerable progress has been made in eliminating hazards to the health and safety of underground workmen . Although much progress has been made in the reduction of injury rates in the Pennsylvania anthracite field , the injury rates for the anthracite mines of Pennsylvania are generally higher than the average for coal mines in the United States as a whole , because the mining conditions , including the safety problems , in the Pennsylvania anthracite fields are more complex than in other coal fields of the United States . Several factors contribute to this extremely difficult problem , among which are : Multiple - vein mining , steeply pitching measures , folds or faults , hard smooth floors underneath the veins , and the remining or reclaiming of pillars in severely crushed , broken ground . In the early days of the Pennsylvania anthracite industry , only the more productive veins were mined , and this resulted in bypassing those veins that were relatively thin and those containing considerable proportions of impurities . However , the development of modern coal - preparation equipment , improved marketing conditions , and the adoption of mechanical equipment , such as the various types of conveyors and scraper loaders , have made possible the recovery of the thinner and poorer veins . Furthermore , in the early days , little or no attempt was made to recover the coal pillars , usually owing to the great amount of virgin coal available . Consequently , much of the anthracite produced within the last few years has been recovered by second and third mining and frequently by fourth mining - in areas where operations had been suspended for many years . In such areas , the coal veins and intervening strata are usually crushed as the result of gradual subsidence , which intensifies the hazards incidental to roof control , haulage , ventilation , and mine gases . Moreover , the use of coal - cutting equipment is not practicable in most anthracite mines because of. the inclination of the veins and because , in crushed -ground areas , the faces must be advanced slowly and for short distances at a time to permit the erection of timber sets and the placing of forepoles to support the roof and sides . Thus , the slow process of mining brought about by these conditions has resulted in the production of only 0.424 ton of anthracite for each man- hour worked , as compared with 0.753 ton? for each man - hour worked at other coal mines in the United States . A summary contained in Bulletin 462,8/ a publication of the Federal Bureau of Mines , reveals that the rate of fatal injuries in the Pennsylvania anthracite industry was improved from 13.47 deaths per million tons produced in 1870 to 3.88 deaths per million tons mined in 1942. During the period March 16 , 1942 to January 1 , 1947 , the fatality rate was reduced from 3.88 to 2.87 deaths for each million tons mined . On the million man-hour basis , the rate of fatal injuries was reduced from 1.643 to 1.130 and the nonfatalinjury rate was lowered from 119.01 to 83.12 during the same period . The improvements made in both the fatal- and nonfatal - injury rates have required the cooperation of the workmen , the mining companies , and the State and Federal inspection departments . Many individual mines and companies have achieved commendable safety records which contributed greatly to the over - all average for the industry , particularly during the 1942-47 period . One of the most outstanding of these is the Continental mine of the Continental -Archbald Coal Co. , a member of the Moffat Co. Interests .

Strategic Ca-bearing minerals like scheelite and fluorite are usually separated by flotation, yet the separation is quite difficult due to their similar surface Ca active sites. Compared with the conventional strong collector sodium oleate (NaOL), lead nitrate-benzohydroxamic acid (Pb-BHA), complex collector shows a better selectivity for scheelite, yet its high cost hinders its wide application. Therefore, a novel collector (Pb-BHA-NaOL complex) was initially developed in this work to overcome the abovementioned dilemma. The flotation results of a single mineral showed that Pb-BHA-NaOL had a better selectivity for scheelite than Pb-BHA. Under the conditions of sequential assembly of Pb, BHA and NaOL at the molar ratio of 240:120:1 and pH 9.0, selective separation of scheelite from fluorite could be achieved without adding any depressants. In addition, for the same preferred scheelite recovery, Pb- BHA-NaOL could also save approximately 20% Pb and BHA compared with Pb-BHA. The analyses of the zeta potential measurement and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy indicated that Pb-BHA-NaOL showed stronger adsorption on scheelite relative to fluorite. Meanwhile, Pb-BHA-NaOL showed more adsorption modes and higher utilisation of Pb and BHA on scheelite than Pb-BHA, which was due to the accelerator, NaOL. Manganese oxides occur, with some iron oxides, in small scattered lenses on property controlled by the Columbia Manganese Co. (1943) near Evington, Campbell County, Va. The company mined some manganese ore during 1917 and 1918. A preliminary examination in May 1942 indicated the possibility of finding additional ore. On August 21, 1942, the Bureau of Mines began prospecting to verify the continuity of the ore exposures. Work on this project continued until February 5, 1943. Prospecting and development work included shaft sinking, crosscutting, drifting, trenching, and test-pitting in six separate areas indicating two types of deposits. The most predominant type is a wide brecciated area in which occur lenses or pockets of nodular manganese oxides. The other type is characterized by more of a vein structure, including thin layers of manganese oxides.

The novel attachment timer apparatus presented in this paper serves as a diagnostic tool that allows the detection of changes in bubble-particle attachment probability and therefore floatability caused by alterations in the chemical environment and particle properties. The apparatus consists of six identical capillaries where bubbles with defined size are produced simultaneously in a measurement chamber. The bubbles at the capillary tips are placed in contact with the submerged particle bed for specific time periods, controlled with the help of automatic actuators. The advantage of the instrument is that hundreds of bubble-particle contacts can be measured automatically within a short time period. Microscopic pictures of each measured bubble are taken while recording the movement of the bubble before, during and after contact with the solid particles. The recorded pictures can be used to determine the actual bubble size and its corresponding deviation, and to detect the attachment of particles. The attached particles are collected in a detachable chamber for subsequent characterization. Furthermore, the device is portable and can be taken to the mineral processing plants for quick evaluation of particle-bubble attachment efficiency with particles and process water sampled directly from real processes.

The technology to selectively leach gold, silver and base metals from ores, concentrates, and wastes, using an alkaline glycine solution, has initiated significant interest in using the new technology in various environments such as in-situ, in-place, dump, heap, and vat and agitated tank leaching. It has been shown that glycine acts synergistically with a number of other lixiviants to lower the net consumption of the other lixiviants while allowing low cost glycine solution recovery. Glycine is a non-toxic, stable, environmentally benign reagent that is available in bulk industrial quantities. It has the ability to dissolve most copper oxide and sulfide minerals, as well as native copper, whilst not interacting with acid consuming gangue nor dissolving iron and various or ubiquitous gangue elements. It acts synergistically with small amounts of cyanide to leach gold-copper ores at leach rates higher than either glycine or cyanide on their own, while significantly reducing cyanide consumption and eliminating detoxification requirements. The leaching behaviour of various glycine based systems will be reviewed, followed by the evaluation of the adsorption of gold onto activated carbon. Where the economics merit it, copper can be easily recovered using solvent extraction or sulfide precipitation.

Cameroon's mineral industry continued to be dominated by crude petroleum, The economic development of the country depended on the production and export of crude on. Output was estimated to be 49 million barrels in 1985 compared with 56 million barrels in 1984 and 47 million barrels in 1988. The country's only refinery consumed approximately 12% of the daily production of crude oil while operating at slightly over 50% capacity. The refinery output, however, supplied the domestic need for motor fuel and heating oils. Cameroon's economic prospects were heavily dependent on the oil sector, which bad been responsible for the recent strong growth in the economy. The country consistently sought to avoid the problems associated with an overdependence on oil and followed a relatively broad-based development strategy, using oil revenues to sustain and encourage growth in other sectors. Approximately 75% of the gross domestic product (GDP) was attributed to the mineral industry in some form. GDP growth was approximately 6.5% during 1985.

THE Falcon Lake stock is a small igneous mass, 2.6 square miles in area, which has intruded a belt of older lavas and metamorphosed sediments. It is well exposed and the entire area of its outcrop is taken up with surveyed mining claims, the claim lines forming a grid which makes ideal conditions for a detailed petrographical study of the unusual variations which are found in the composition of this unit (see Figure 1). The study of this mass, which has revealed features of both scientific and economic significance, began in the summer of 1939 when trainees in a Prospectors' Training Camp, a Do-minion-Provincial youth-training project under the writer's supervision, were, detailed to map rock outcrops on various mining claims. Microscopic study of rock specimens taken on a line across this stock were made during the following winter and proved to be of such interest that a special trip was made the following summer for the purpose of gathering more data, the results of which are presented here. Location The stock is close to the southeast corner of the province of Manitoba, about three miles from the Ontario boundary. It lies between Falcon and West Hawk lakes and less than a mile south of the Trans-Canada highway. It is easily accessible by motor car, as a branch road from the highway leads to the Sunbeam Kirkland gold mine, which is within the inner core of the stock. Previous Work This area was the first in the Province to receive attention from prospectors, who entered it from the adjacent Lake of the Woods district during the days of the mining boom in the 1890's. Small occurrences of gold, copper, molybdenum, and tungsten ores were found, but to date there has been no production from the district, except for small shipments of gold ore. The regional geology has been mapped by the Manitoba Department of Mines and Natural Resources, the Falcon Lake stock being shown and recorded as of "varying composition". The more detailed work involved in preparing the accompanying map has necessitated only minor changes in the outline as previously mapped.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting investigations to determine how fuels belonging to or for the use of the United States Govern- ment can be utilized with greater efficiency. As a result of these investigations a number of reports have been published, each report treating of one phase of fuel utilization. A list of these publications is given at the end of this bulletin. The efficient utilization of coal depends on the correct design of furnaces and on their proper operation. To attain both of these conditions a knowledge of the fundamental principles of combus- tion is necessary. Therefore, the study of the combustion of coal in industrial furnaces has been made a part of the bureau's fuel in- vestigations. The desirability of investigating the fundamental principles of combustion was suggested by the study of a large number of steam- ing tests made by the fuel-testing division on coals from all of the more important fields in the United States. The results of these tests have been published in Bulletin 325 of the United States Geological Survey and in Bulletin 23 of the Bureau of Mines. As a result of that study a plan to investigate the combustion of coal in a special apparatus in which all conditions could be controlled was presented to the National Advisory Board for Fuels and Struc- tural Materials at its meeting of April 10 and 11, 1906. The plan received the approval of the board, and since the establishment of the experiment station of the Bureau of Mines at Pittsburgh the investigation of the combustion of coal has been carried on intermit- tently. The history of these investigations is given in Technical Paper 63.

"This report describes the trend of developments in electric brass-furnace practice in the last two years, and supplements Bureau of Mines Bulletin 202, ""Electric Brass-Furnace Practice"", which was published in 1922. In that bulletin it -as pointed out that some of the lines on which electric brass-furnace progress would take place were clear, but others were less so.Developments in foreign countries.Foreign brass-melters have not yet adopted electric melting to an extent comparable to its use in the United States. It is doubtful Whether all foreign countries combined use 100 electric brass furnaces; of these about 35 are of American make (Ajax, Detroit, Baily) and are operating in Canada, Mexico, England, France, Japan, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Norway, Germany, Argentina and Czecho-Slovakia.`The Rennerfelt furnace finds some use in Sweden (1)c, notwithstanding its high metal loss on alloys high in zinc, Two German firms are reported(2) to be using the Rochling-Rodenhauser induction furnace on bronze, the average energy consumption being given as 400 kw.-h. per ton. No comment is made on any trouble from the ""pinch effect"", A firm in Switzerland is reported (3) to use three 600-lb., direct-arc furnaces of its own design to melt babbitt, antimonial lead, coinage silver, nickel, copper, and brass. The metal loss on yellow-brass turnings is high. Use Of a direct-arc furnace in England, with precautions aimed to prevent surface overheating, vas abandoned (4) in favor of an Ajax furnace."

The mining industry is facing declining feed grades which require the mining and processing of larger volumes of material per tonne of product. Pre-concentration aims to remove barren material at as coarse a particle size and as early in the process as possible to reduce processing costs, energy consumption, water losses, and greenhouse gas emissions while increasing production and profitability. This may be achieved using bulk ore sorting—the separation of barren gangue from a fully loaded conveyor belt based on the grade as measured or inferred from a sensor. This paper evaluates the technical and economic viability of bulk ore sorting for the PanAust Phu Kham copper deposit in Lao PDR. Bulk ore sorting technology is described briefly along with discussion of appropriate sensor and diversion systems for the Phu Kham operation. To evaluate the economic implications, the actual mined material and costs from 2014 were used as the base-case. Sampling data was not available; therefore, the ore grade variability that would feed a bulk ore sorter was estimated using geo-statistical tools based on mine grade control data. The sorter performance when treating this material was simulated considering the accuracy of the sensor measurement and errors associated with material diversion. The impact on inferred cash flow was estimated for several different scenarios considering the additional costs for sorter operation and reject handling. The evaluation demonstrated that bulk ore sorting at Phu Kham has the potential to increase the amount of metal in product and/or reduce processing plant throughput (and costs) to improve the annual inferred cash flow for the conditions investigated. The sorter is the gatekeeper – only material above the cut-off grade (value-adding) reports to the processing plant; no waste dilutes the feed. Likewise, above cutoff grade material is not lost to waste; preventing lost revenue.

Last November, when the British Educational Mission was visiting this country, letters were sent to the various mining schools asking what arrangements had been made for cooperating with British and. French schools. Of the eleven schools from which replies were received, none had taken any definite steps in this direction. The Colorado School of Mines, though, stated that it was offering scholarships to all men who had served in the U. S. Army and Navy during the war. A letter was also sent to Sir Henry Miers, Vice-chancellor of the University of Manchester, who was the head of the British Mission. He replied as follows: "In my opinion the mining profession is second to none in the responsibility of the duties which it involves or to which it leads in all parts of the world; also it is a. profession in which the student or teacher has much to gain by migrating to foreign countries. This applies in a special degree to British students coming to America where they will be able to enlarge their views by a widened experience. We (the Mission) have everywhere found the most, cordial acceptance of such proposals. Several of the British Universities have recently instituted a new doctorate of philosophy attainable after 2 or 3 years course of advanced study; this scheme includes Oxford and Manchester. The conditions admitting to the degree course are that the applicant should be a graduate of an approved University and should show evidence that he is qualified to pursue the course which lie proposes." In a conversation with Prof. Alfred C. Lane, of Tufts College, Sir Henry Miers said that students from Great Britain should be most easily attracted to America, both to universities and colleges and technological institutions.. The present case study details the solution to a complex situation in a mining operation, involving the challenge of expanding the tailings storage facility in high-criticality areas adjacent to electrical rooms that provide continuous power to the entire mining process, including water pumping and drainage systems. For this purpose, blasting is required to prepare the construction areas for the new expansion facilities. Upon deciding to proceed with blasting, a comprehensive engineering assessment was conducted to ensure operational continuity without impacting the process, while generating sufficient fracturing in the rock mass to allow extraction with auxiliary equipment. Support from specialists through the Technical Assistance area was requested, and a detailed evaluation was carried out through advanced studies. Field vibration studies were conducted to define attenuation models and characterize the rock mass in the sector. With this information, simulations were carried out using predictive and probabilistic models with Monte Carlo methods to select delay charges and optimal timing for reducing vibration levels and increasing frequency levels. With these measures, the three blasts conducted near the Gas Insulated Substation room, which had distances ranging from 30 to 100 meters, produced the following results: • Vibrations; The three blasts conducted at distances of 100, 30, and 50 meters recorded vibration values of 5.3, 40.2, and 9.5 mm/s, all of which were below the maximum vibration level of 50 mm/s set by the projects area. According to the USBM RI8507-OSMRE standard, all values for Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) and frequency were below the permissible limits. • Flyrock; Through filming and post-blast inspection, it was confirmed that the ejections were within the safety zone. • Fragmentation; The results obtained showed a maximum overbreak size of 1.5 meters, allowing the broken material to be moved effectively.

There is, in the southern part of the State of Illinois, a series of deposits of fluorspar and galena in which the former mineral occurs on a scale of magnitude unequalled, so far as I know, in any other part of the world. In June, 1891, 1 had an opportunity of visiting the region of their principal development, near Rosiclare, Hardin county, Ill., and examined such of the mines in the vicinity as were accessible at that time. A very large proportion of the mining shafts that had been sunk in this region were unfortunately abandoned for the time being, and full of water. Moreover, detailed maps of the region are unattainable, no surveys having been made there, apparently, since the original land-surveys' of the early part of the century. In spite of these disadvantages I was enabled, in the few days at my disposal, to ascertain with sufficient accuracy certain facts not hitherto published with regard to these deposits, which seem worthy the attention of the members of the Institute. Before proceeding to a description of the deposits in question, I will give a brief abstract of the little historical and geological information hearing directly or indirectly upon them, which I have been able to find in existing publications. Historical. That the mineral was known to the Indians, is proved by the discovery, in some of the pre-historic mounds of the region,* of fluorspar, shaped into ornaments. The earliest scientific mention of its occurrence is found in the first volume of the American Journal of Science (1818+), which describes specimens obtained in the vicinity of Shawneetown by Mr. Joseph Baldwin. Similar notices appear in the same journal in 1820 and 1821, but without mention of the exact locality. They remark on the fetid odor which characterizes the mineral and its association with galena. Supplementary sampling of particulate mass concentration, the number concentration and the average particle diameter of nanoparticles using a TSI Dust-Trak DRX Aerosol Monitor, Naneos Partector 2 has been conducted. The aim of this study was to evaluate suitability of the instrument for long-term monitoring of diesel particulate matter (DPM) at conditions of polymetallic mines. Sampling was conducted in an area of the active ore heading, requiring the use of a diesel-powered face haul-age loader R1700 and a mine truck Caterpillar AD-45. The sampling was done for 126 minutes at a distance of 30 metres from the mine face. Results of this field work can be used to expand the sampling program to other mines. Expected outcomes of this study are to develop costeffective DPM control strategies, improve mine ventilation, and protect mineworkers’ health.

Abstract This paper lists the interests of the Physical Metallurgy and Chemical Research laboratories of the Metallgesellschaft, which were visited by the authors, members of a group of Canadian investigators sent to Germany by the Department of Reconstruction in 1945. The Physical Metallurgy Research Laboratory The following information was obtained from Professor E. Schmid, Chief of the laboratories. It is understood that Dr. Schmid is a former Nazi and was to be removed from his post in November (1945). Aluminium Research The laboratories investigated the corrosion resistance of the high-strength aluminium-magnesium-zinc alloys. The same test procedure as used by V.L.W. was followed and Dr. Schmid co-operated closely with Dr. Brenner on this project. Intercrystalline corrosion was combatted by additions of chromium, titanium, or vanadium, and the work in this field parallels that of Dr. Brenner of V.L.W. * Dr. Schmid reports that Bollenrath and Siebert believe that corrosion difficulties with these alloys can be overcome to some extent by heat treatment. He himself was of opinion that the correct answer lay not only in correct alloying but also in correct heat treatment. The heat treatment involved either interrupted quenching or a change in quenching rate from a solution temperature of 500°C. The procedure is either a slower cooling from solution temperature or an interrupted cooling with a holding period at l50°C. Work had been done on piston alloys, the 11-13% Si, 1% Ni, 1% Cu, and 1% Mg being the favoured material. This is called Lo-Ex and is similar to Mahle 124 or KS1275.

With the postwar emergency for new housing and for new industrial buildings, much research has been done on lightweight aggregates for use in concrete and plaster. The trend toward lighter weight aggregates to relieve the dead load on the higher, steel frame- work buildings started toward the end of the last century. Progressively the requirements be- came more stringent, crushed bank slag, weighing 80 lb per cu ft as com- pared to 100 lb for crushed rock, was supplemented in some sections by foamed slags and expanded shales weighing from 40 to 60 lb per cu ft. In other sections cinders were used weighing from 40 to 50 lb, including sand. Sections favored with more recent vulcanism turned to pumice weighing from 30 to 60 lb, whereas other localities made use of diatomite, from 28 to 40 lb. Exfoliated vermiculite weighing from only 6 to 10 lb per cu ft came into use. As the search for lighter weights in aggregates continued so did the search for other desirable properties such as nailability, ease of cutting or channeling, and good insulation to both sound and heat. This search eventually led to a widespread interest in the expansion of perlite, or similar volcanic glasses, with the result that in 1946, the Office of the Housing Expediter' listed eleven firms reporting the operation of processing plants either on pilot or commercial scale producing aggregates weighing from 2 to 16 lb per cu ft.

WHEN Dr. Horace Fraser, your President, invited me to speak to you today I advised him in confidence that I was leaving my present positions on April 30th. In the circumstances it seemed to me that this audience might prefer to have as its speaker one who wo.uld J1ave a continuing association with the atomic energy programme. Dr. Fraser was kind enough to suggest that my re-marks might he of special interest to you, since I would be able to sum up my views on the atomic energy programme. I hope that I will not disappoint him or you on that score. I am particularly pleased that my last public appearance in my present positions should be at the Annual Convention of the C.I.M. since, as all of you know, a very important part of my work has been in the mining field. As it happens, my first public address on the subject of atomic energy and its raw material -uranium -was made at your Annual Convention in Montreal in April, 1949. It seems fitting that my final address should also be made at this convention -nine years later.

Por outro lado, a necessidade de persistência de informações consolidadas, como informações de rotas e de planos de carregamento, torna interessante o uso de Sistemas de Bancos de Dados (SGBD) e sistemas legados. A integração de todos os sistemas necessários num projeto conciso com um fluxo de informações completo e eficiente também exige um gerenciamento vertical, que possa cuidar do acoplamento de todos os níveis de forma eficiente. Nesse mesmo caminho, o desenvolvimento coordenado com metodologias que permitem a interdisciplinaridade é essencial para complementar a tarefa da gestão, trazendo a preocupação com uma integração eficiente para o nível de desenvolvimento.

Consistent with these goals is the improvement of the muck haulage cycle from open stopes with the No. 12 Mine.Existing haulage from open stopes occurs with LHD units experience at Brunswick indicates that LHD units have a higher unit cost per tonne mucked than loader-truck combinations when the haulage exceeds approximately 150 m.The reintroduction of open stoping at Brunswick made existing loader-truck combinations unsuitable. It was recognized that application of recent continuous loading technology could potentially result in significant unit cost savings and productivity increases.A review of the technology resulted in the testing of the Voest Alpine AL60 loader in the open stopes located on the 1000m Le vel. Testing began in January 1988 and finished in late November 1988. The test will provide experience as well as quantified production and maintenenace parameters f or the purpose of quantifying production unit costs and system productivity, ultimately resulting in a decision to further utilize or not utilize the loader as a primarymucking unit at Brunswick .INTRODUCTIONBrunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Ltd. produces approximately 10500 tonnes per day from the No. 12Mine located 35 km southwest of Bathurst, New Brunswick Mining is the largest (single mine) producer of zinc in the world having mined over 52 million tonnes since 1964. Many years of production still remain with proven and probable reserves in excess of 90 million tonnes. Reserves grade at an average of 3.65% Pb. 8.99070 Zn, 99g/mt Ag and 0.32% Cu . The operation employs 1446 people with approximately 800underground including operations and maintenance staff.In the No. 12 Mine two major mining methods are presently utilized . The primary method is Mechanized Cut and Fill (MCF) accounting for approximately 6500 tonnes per day from four major areas. The remaining 4000 tonnes per day is produced from open stopes with the majority of 2800 tonnes per day being produced by the 1000 level.The 1000Level contains 30 million tonnes segmented into open stope blocks 30 m high, 15m and 30 m on strike , with a transverse width of 10m to 50 m (Fig. I). Stopes are organized on a primary secondary stope arrangement along strike. Primary stopes are undercut and overcut full size with the back fully cablebolted. All stope and lateral development is driven 4.0 m high. All stopes to date are flat bottom (Fig. 2). Primary stopes are filled with cemented rock- fill , secondaries with conventional rockfill, Haulage from the stopes is primarily with 8-yard LHD units ; mucking is approximately 50% conventional and 50% remote. Haul distance to date has averaged approximately 150m with current stope haul distances of approximately 300m. Haulage is presently to a small jaw crusher situated on the 1000 Level. From August 1989on, haulage will be to a set of ore passes feeding to a large gyratory crusher situated on the 1200 Level. Start up of the gyratory crusher corresponds to an increase in tonnage from 1000 Level to 4100 tonnes per day."
