This study begins with the semivario- gram modelling of variables rutile grade and clay content from a beach sand rutile deposit. This is followed by two dimensional block kriging. The deposit was divided into blocks of 30 x 30 x 1.5 m dimensions and the kriged estimate together with the associated kriging variances for each variable within each block were determined. Finally, using the results of the krig- ing program and considering the acceptable limit of clay content together with the cutoff grade for rutile, a method for optimization of mineable thickness and hence the tonnage of ore was applied and the results were dis- Cussed.

The 1100 orebody is a massive copper sul- phide orebody which contains a major portion of the Isa Mine copper ore reserves of 130 million tonnes at 3.2%. The underground mining of a deposit as large as the 1100 orebody is technologically a complex operation as extraction strategies have to be evaluated with reference to 1. rock mechanics considerations, 2. safety and environmental standards, 3. production and operating require- ments and 4. metal recovery and costs. The mining philosophy in the orebody has undergone considerable change over the past five years as a result of experience and improved technology. At this stage, primary stopes are extracted by high rise sublevel open stoping and pillars by slot and mass blast drawn either under rock fill or as an open Stope.

BHP Minerals Ltd operates an open cut iron ore mining operation on Koolan Island, off the coast north of Derby in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. The mine comprises a number of pits, the largest of which is situated adjacent to the coast on the southern side of the island. The lowest bench is currently at RL +2 m, and the mine has planned ultimate depth of RL -82 m. Mining has already extended below the pre-existing water table level, and below mean sea level. In 1984, an extensive program of drilling, geophysics and test pumping was instigated to evaluate the aquifer hydraulic properties and the nature of the groundwater flow regime. With the aid of computer modelling, predictions have been made of the likely dewatering and depressurization requirements, and a conceptual pumping and drainage system has been designed.

Since the discovery of coal of the Southern coalfield (Illawarra 1797, Burragorang 1806) coal mining has grown progressively to the thriving industry of today. Early shallow escarpment mining required no serious access development, but with extension of mining to further and deeper areas, sinking became necess- ary. Now, with 17 major shafts and 7 decline drifts in current use, new mining activities involve several current sinking and drifting projects, with more in prospect. Conventional sinking and drifting, using blasting and mucking techniques proven in recent years are normally in use, with attempts, recent and current to accelerate advances by boring techniques. With export and to less extent local market unpredictability, it is vital to produce mine establishment times to allow advantage to be taken of market upswings and there is great need for research and improvement of mine access construction as the major aspect of establish- ment.

the results of an experimental study aimed at beneficiating a complex ore containing bastnaesite and other rare-earth minerals, with associated barite and fluospar are illustrated. Owing to its minero-petrographic, physico-mechanical and structural characteristics, the crude ore is not amenable to classic concentration methods, such as flotation, magnetic and gravity separation. Therefore the technical feasibility of selective disintegration followed by size classification has been studied, whereby bastnaesite and the other rare-earth minerals can be concentrated into the finest size fractions. Leaching and subsequent extraction of rare-earth metals by liquid-liquid separation represents the final stage of beneficiation.

The present geology of the northwest quadrant of the Circum-Pacific is the product of the interact-ions between plates or paleo-plates which have oc-curred since the earliest part of the earth's hist-ory. Almost every possible geologic structures are observable there; stable continents, collision belts, and subduction arcs as well as extensional basins. This suggests that almost all the possible tectonic processes occurred through geologic time and the present overall structure of the Quadrant is no more than a time section of the long lasting tectonic history which the region experienced.

Middle-to-Late Proterozoic stratigraphy and metallogeny in the eastern part of the Canadian Cordillera and in South Australia are strikingly similar. In both areas, thick, predominantly shallow-water strata and their contained mineral deposits can be divided into three sequences (A, B, C) that record episodic and prolonged continental rifting. It is proposed that Adelaidean strata of Australia were deposited adjacent to Belt-Purcell, Mackenzie Mountains and Windermere strata of the Canadian Cordillera within an epicontinental trough of a "Hudsonia" regacontinent. With the final rifting of this trough, the paleo-Pacific ocean was born. By Early Cambrian time, Australia- Antarctica was on the trailing "east" side of the nascent megacontinent, Gondwana, and was being modified on the "west" by accretion in the Pan-African event. North America, more or less surrounded by trailing edges at this time, was analogous to the Cenozoic African plate. This hypothesis accommodates the available paleomagnetic and radiometric data. It has implications for pre-Pangean plate tectonics, paleogeography, and the predictive metallogeny of both areas.

Since pyrite is a semiconductor, the relationship between the leaching rate and the semiconducting properties is of interest. In order to investigate this relationship, a pyrite concentrate (95% FeS2) was oxidized at 90¦C (363 K) in an acid solution containing 100 g/dm3 H2SO4 and 1.0 to 25.1 g/dm3 total Fe. The suspension potential (Pt vs. SCE) was maintained at the desired values, within the range 0.40 to 0.70 V, by controlled additions of a KMn04 solution during leaching. The results were analyzed using a simplified kinetic expression. The rate constant was independent of the Fe concentration, while it increased with suspension potential. Partly oxidized samples were then prepared at varying fractions of reaction. After removing the elemental sulphur formed, they underwent thermoelectric power measurements using a packed bed lying in a temperature gradient. The value of thermo- electric power increased from about 0 to 30 pV/K in the early stages of oxidation. The results obtained are compared with those for chalco- pyrite reported in a previous paper.

In order to avoid costly moisture penalties on coal shipments and to minimise rail freight costs, screen bowl centrifuges were selected and installed in the Mount Thorley Coal Preparation Plant for dewatering fine coal product. The Mount Thorley fine coal circuit consists of desliming the -0.5 mm (ww) fine coal in two stages of classifying cyclones prior to recovery by froth flotation. Provision has been made to bypass the flotation circuit with the classified flotation feed reporting directly to product and the centrifuge dewatering circuit has been designed to handle either flotation feed or flotation product. Major mechanical failures of the gearboxes and the ceramic tiling occurred early in the operation life of the machines which led to design changes being made to achieve satisfactory operation. This paper discusses the operating experience at Mount Thorley with respect to both mechanical and metallurgical performance of the screen bowl centrifuges since their installation in 1985.

A generalized void diffusion model for subsidence prediction has been developed based on theoretical concepts and physical principles. The general form of the model is a three-dimensional differential equation. With a few assumptions on the characteristics of overburden strata overlying typical room-and-pillar mining or longwall mining systems, specific solutions for the differential equation were obtained. A brief description of these solutions and their applications in the United States and China are presented in this paper.

Pre-Miocene igneous rocks from the Phili pine island arc are characterised by 87Sr/86Sr and 143Nd/144Nd ratios typical for intra-oceanic island arcs where sediment involvement in the magma genesis was minor. Lead isotopic ratios are similar to Indian Ocean MORB (Mukasa et al., 1986a,b). Pliocene to recent volcanics, however, have more radiogenic Sr and Pb and less radiogenic Nd, except for the volcanics of the Bicol Arc, which have similar isotopic signatures as the Pre-Miocene rocks. We suggest that Pre-Miocene magmas and Bicol-Arc magmas have been generated in response to the subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate, their isotopic characteristics reflecting the composition of Philippine Sea crust. The Bataan arc magmas may reflect the larger amounts of sediments available for subduction in the South China Sea, while magmas of the Mindoro Arc, which are characterised by the most radiogenic Sr and least radiogenic Nd, may have been contaminated by slivers of the Mindoro-North Palawan terrane, which have been carried down to mantle depths after the collision of this terrane and the Philippine arc in Miocene (McCabe et al., 1982). This interpretation implies that Nd (and by inference other REE) can migrate from the subducted slab to the mantle wedge. Thus, variable Nd-isotopic ratios in island arc magmas (e.g. Sunda, Lesser Antillas) may not he a primary feature of the mantle wedge but a consequence of the release of Nd from the subducted slab.

At any given time, the tidal force subjects massive regions to a spatially uniform load. The deformation of any large structure due to these forces is proportional to the elastic properties of the structure. In this aspect, the tidal force applies a load in a manner similar to that of a large-scale testing machine. Any anomalies in the measured tidal response must reflect alterations in the average elastic response of the massive structure. In the present work, tidal tilt measurements obtained in the wall of a large dam are used to infer changes in the response of the dam to applied loads. In particular, it is found that the dam response has changed by approximately 13 percent, on average, for two monitoring periods separated by 5 years. It is possible that these changes were produced by the different volumes of water in the dam for the monitoring periods. The tidal measurement technique can also be applied to monitor changes In the average structural response of large underground and surface masses relevant to coal and metal mines.

In 2010 Agnew Gold Mine (AGM) struggled to produce the required tonnages from its stopes. The longhole rises used to create void in stopes were unreliable and often failed to gain the designed rise height. The number of firings per stope was having an adverse impact on the ground conditions at the stope brows, impeding stope productivity.Through practical experimentation with longhole drill rigs, box hole rigs and development drill rigs as well as trialling new methods in conjunction with reviewing drill hole data, drill hole accuracy was observed to be an issue on-site. Innovative dragging methods such as the reverse drag, combined with a slope instead of a vertical face on the rear of stopes, have improved dragging and a reduction of firings per stope, enabling larger production blasts.The methods trialled and subsequently implemented at AGM have facilitated the mine achieving budgeted targets for six consecutive quarters. A combination of new radiometric age dates, local field relationships and the regional tectonic history indicate that the low sulphidation, fault breccia-hosted, epithermal gold-silver mineralisation at Umuna is related to continental rifting processes rather than subduction induced deformation and magmatism. K-Ar and Ar-Ar age dating of secondary sericite associated with the gold-silver mineralisation indicates that the alteration crystallised between 4.0 and 3.2 Ma, whereas relative age relationships and SHRIMP II U-Pb dating of the abundant Boiou porphyry intrusions on Misima confirm that the calc-alkaline plutonism is significantly older (8.1 f 0.4 Ma) and related to a different tectonothermal event. The Woodlark Basin sea floor spreading centre occurs to the north of Misima and has continued to propagate westwards, into the continental basement of the Papuan Peninsular, since the end of the Miocene. The westernmost tip of sea floor spreading centre is presently to the east of the D'Entrecasteaux Islands but would have been to the east of Misima roughly 4 Ma. Many of the young tectonothermal features in the D'Entrecasteaux Islands (hydrothermal activity and associated epithermal mineralisation, metamorphic core complex exhumation, detachment faulting, peralkaline volcanism, half graben type basin formation) can be attributed to major extensional deformation ahead of the propagating rift system. Similar tectonothermal features on Misima are temporally associated with the epithermal gold-silver mineralisation at Umuna, suggesting that the D'Entrecasteaux Islands are a modern day tectonic analogue for Misima at the time of precious metal mobility and deposition. In the iron and steel manufacturing industries, efforts are being made to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, and the transition from a coal-based steelmaking process to that utilising renewable energy is being pursued. An alternative process in which directly hydrogen-reduced iron is melted in an electric furnace is being investigated. It is known that foaming slag reduces heat loss from the steel bath in electric arc furnace, but iron loss due to the suspension of steel particles in the slag is indispensable. To improve the separation of steel particles from the slag, the control of the slag viscosity is important. Although the slag viscosity has been extensively studied, in those studies the slag was considered to be a simple liquid. However, in actual operations, slag is a multiphase fluid consisting of solid, gas and liquid phases. Therefore, in this study, by measuring the sedimentation velocity of titanium, stainless steel and glass spheres in an aqueous glycerin solution containing bubbles generated by the reaction between NaHCO3 and C2H2O4, the apparent viscosity of the gas-liquid fluid was evaluated based on Stoke’s law. It was found that the apparent viscosity of the gas-liquid fluid is larger than the viscosity of liquid phase and depends on both the bubble volume ratio in solution and the density of the falling solid sphere, and the apparent viscosity was different from that previously obtained by the rotation method. The apparent viscosity derived from the sedimentation velocity of solid spheres changed depending on the specific gravity of the ball. This is because the apparent viscosity is derived from the velocity of a ball falling in a static bubble in this method, whereas that is derived from the force applied by a stationary flow in the rotational method.

The considerations which led to the decision to_ install discs at the Dampier Pellet Plant of Hamer ley Iron Pty. Ltd. are described. Initial testwork showed that the ore could be ground dry in open circuit to a Blaine index of 2500 cm2/g and that it pelletized readily. The various design criteria including diameter, slope, speed, motor size, depth of sidewall, feed point and water spray location were then determined. Plant performance after commissioning is described including the various problems encountered and the modifications since carried out to overcome them. The main problem was quickly identified as disc feed rate control. Various bin and bin feeder modifications were tried to overcome the effects of the fluidising characteristics of the dry ground ore. Other factors found to affect disc operation are ore size distribution, additives and operator competence.

The Coal Section of the Geological Survey of Queensland was formed in 1950 to plan and supervise systematic diamond drilling programmes to investigate the State's coal resources. For the first 15 years these programmes were con- fined to the established coalfields to prove reserves of coal suitable for steam raising for power generation. Adequate reserves were del- ineated during this period to provide coal for the operating lives of new power stations at Ipswich and Collinsville. Later exploration was aimed at a regional appraisal of coal mea- sure stratigraphy, particularly in the Bowen and Galilee Basins. This was followed, in some areas, by drilling to prove reserves to indic- ated status. Parameters were developed to allow a uniform approach to the estimation of reserves. Coal quality is evaluated in terms of potential utilization of coal. Reserves defined by exploration companies are assessed, and combined with reserves from Departmental drilling into a general table. Total reserves in situ amount to 9 962 million tonnes of coking coal and 7 333 million tonnes of non-coking coal. Approximately 20 per cent of coking and 40 per cent of non-coking coal were proved as a direct result of Geological Survey drilling programmes. Further explor- ation is planned for the Bowen and Galilee Bas- ins and may extend to the Surat Basin.

Ore control systems at Ridgeway have been designed to deliver gold and copper metal production through focussing on the ore characteristics that impact on mine and mill performance and ultimately metal delivery. This is achieved using data collection and management systems which allow data to be collected digitally with æat captureÆ validation routines. This data forms the basis of forecasting systems which aim to accurately assess local in situ and drawn ore characteristics. Physical attributes of ore such as draw characteristics, brow conditions and visual grade estimation are rountinely recorded. Ore tracking and accounting systems monitor gold and copper grade, copper mineralogy, host lithology and ore sizing. These have material impacts on concentrator throughput and metal recovery. Routine reconcilation and check sampling allow calibration of these systems.
