No lingotamento contínuo, o molde de cobre, onde ocorre a solidificação primária, é um dos componentes principais que determinam a estabilidade do processo e a qualidade superficial das placas. Durante as últimas décadas, vários formatos das placas estreitas do molde foram desenvolvidos para reduzir a ocorrência de trincas transversais nos cantos das placas, de modo a melhorar a qualidade e o rendimento do produto final laminado. Placas estreitas do molde com um chanfro foram aplicadas com sucesso à produção na Máquina de Lingotamento 4 da Usiminas / Cubatão. Aspectos do desenho das placas de molde e da aplicação prática delas, bem como o impacto da aplicação na qualidade do produto final laminado são abordados. A inspeção visual dos produtos laminados após a linha de decapagem mostrou que a ocorrência de defeitos de superfície nas bordas pode ser reduzida significativamente com a utilização da geometria de molde chanfrada.

Esse projeto visou a substituição do sistema de controle instalado por um padrão RUSSULA, sistema esse que controla um laminador de barras e de rolos de 500.000 toneladas/ano na Usina Presidente Vargas da CSN em Volta Redonda, RJ/Brasil. Juntamente com o sistema de controle, RUSSULA forneceu um novo posto de operação para a cabine central, com novas telas de operação, sendo um posto “touch”. Equipado com controladores Siemens S7-400, IHM Wonderware InTouch, acionamentos ABB ACS800 e DCS800, o sistema se apresentava ineficaz, exigindo a otimização do processo, aumento de produtividade, diminuição de paradas, diminuição de perdas metálicas e maior confiabilidade no controle, o último através das ferramentas RUSSULA implementadas no software, como por exemplo detecção automática de sucata, controle de tração, controle de laço, rastreamento do material no laminador, otimização de corte das tesouras e barra fantasma.

Carbochlorination kinetics of pure MoO3, Nb2O5, Ta2O5 and V2O5, by Cl2+CO+N2 gas mixtures was investigated between 380 and 1000 °C. Standard free energy of carhochlorination reactions and phase stability diagrams of these refractory metal compounds were calculated. The influence of total gas flow rate, temperature, reactants partial pressures on the reactivity of these oxides were investigated. The apparent activation energies were found to be about 83, 75, 110 and 100 kJ/mole below 650°C for MoO3, Nb2O5, Ta2O5 and V2O5, respectively. Above this temperature, the Arrhenius plots exhibit a rate anomaly attributed to thermal decomposition of COCl2 and/or structural changes of these refractory metal oxides. The apparent reaction order of carbochlorination of these oxides with respect to Cl2+CO was determined. For these refractory metal oxides, the reaction rate was maximum for a Cl2/CO ratio of about 1 in the chlorinating gas mixture. Results of carbochlorination of these oxides are compared and discussed.

The influence of cooling rate from 1873 to 1473 K on the size and morphology of austenite grains was studied using a Fe-O.I5 % C-I.5 % Mn alloy. The experiments were carried out at three different cooling rates of O.33KJsec, O.67KJsec and air-cooling. The austenite grain showed an isotropy at 0.33KJsec but maximized anisotropy at O.67KJsec and become much less. anisotropic. In order to account for these phenomena, a model was developed for estimating the size and morphology of austenite grains as a function of cooling rate. The driving force for the )( phase formation from 0 phase is caused by undercooling degree due to cooling rate and energy barrier is restricted to the misfit strain energy which is caused by mismatch between )( phase and 0 phase. The )( phase from 0 phase could be formed on not random orientation index systems but specific orientation systems depending on cooling rate.

Aços ARBL são utilizados na fabricação de tubos para transporte de gás natural e petróleo e, devido ao ambiente agressivo, rico em H2S, em que são aplicados, devem resistir à fragilização por hidrogênio. No presente trabalho, verificou-se qual a influência do alongamento longitudinal dos grãos de um aço API X65, com baixo Mn, sobre a permeabilidade de hidrogênio. O material foi caracterizado com a utilização dos microscópios óptico e eletrônico de varredura e os ensaios de permeabilidade foram conduzidos com base na norma ASTM G 148-97. A microestrutura do aço era composta por ferrita e perlita, com baixo teor de inclusões arredondadas de Al e Ca e sem bandeamento. Com os resultados obtidos a partir dos ensaios de permeabilidade, calcularam-se os coeficientes de difusão efetiva do hidrogênio nas seções longitudinal e transversal do aço, e o valor do primeiro se mostrou levemente superior ao do segundo. Isto indica que pode haver influência do alongamento longitudinal dos grãos sobre a permeabilidade de hidrogênio.

A busca de novas rotas de beneficiamento que possam maximizar a recuperação metalúrgica e mássica é uma constante na Vale. O trabalho foi desenvolvido em três fases, onde foram estudadas quatro rotas de beneficiamento que buscaram reduzir a geração de ultrafinos e, assim, aumentar a recuperação mássica. Foram avaliadas rotas com pré-concentração do minério em concentração magnética (rota denominada PCM) e flotação (rota denominada MFMF), e uma rota onde a moagem mais grossa (P80 0,15mm) permite uma menor geração de ultrafinos (rota denominada MDMF). Esta última apresentou um CAPEX 6,5% menor quando comparado a rota PCM.

The Eleonore property (James Bay district of Northern Québec), owned by Goldcorp, hosts gold within stockworks of quartz-tourmaline-arsenopyrite veins and veinlets contained within microcline (potassic alteration) and brown tourmaline replacement zones. The preliminary investigation to recover gold from drill core samples showed that flotation followed ultrafine grinding and cyanidation is the preferred option. Ultrafine grinding is used to liberate gold finely disseminated in sulphides. The flotation concentrate used in the investigation had a P80 of 11 microns and contained 75.5 g/t Au, 5.0 g/t Ag, 10.3% S, 0.07% Cu and traces of antimony (0.03%). The mineralogical characterization showed the presence of 65% gangue minerals, 23% pyrrhotite (hexagonal), 9.6% arsenopyrite, 2.2% pyrite and 0.08% chalcopyrite with trace amounts of galena (0.05%) and sphalerite (0.03%). Gold was in the form of native gold and electrum. A straight cyanidation conducted at pH 11.0, DO of 3-5 ppm, 2000 ppm NaCN, 20 C 72 hours extracted 97.0% Au and consumed 31.5 kg/t NaCN. The equilibrium was reached within 24 hours. Increasing the dissolved oxygen to 16 ppm reduced the consumption of cyanide to 22.0 kg/t with 96.7% Au extraction. A 16-h pretreatment with 2.0 kg/t lead nitrate, followed by a 24-h cyanidation reduced the cyanide consumption to 6.0 kg/t with a gold extraction of 97.5%. Increasing the lead nitrate addition to 6.0 kg/t reduced the cyanide consumption to 1.2 kg/t by passivating the surface of pyrrhotite. The gold extraction remained at 97.0%. It was possible to decrease the concentration of cyanide to 800 ppm NaCN without compromising gold extraction. The associated cyanide consumption was 1.2 kg/t NaCN. The passivation of gold grains was an issue when the cyanide concentration was decreased to 550 ppm NaCN. The gold extraction decreased to 92.2%. The average lime addition for all the tests was 7.4 kg/t and the average silver extraction was 80%. Efficient cyanidation of an ultrafine sulphide concentrate with only 800 ppm NaCN represents an advance in leaching of ultrafine sulphide concentrates.

Este artigo visa estudar polímeros como quitosana, amido entre outros com elevada disponibilidade como agentes aglomerantes no processo de pelotização de minério de ferro e discutir sobre o impacto da sua utilização. Os polímeros foram testados preliminarmente no teste de bancada (teste em pneu), para medir qualitativamente a tendência de aglomeração. Os polímeros com melhores resultados foram testados em escala piloto, que simula o processo industrial. Nos testes preliminares, o amido gelificado apresentou os melhores resultados de resistência física de pelotas verdes e secas. Entretanto, no teste piloto o amido não foi capaz de controlar a umidade superficial. Os outros polímeros não foram considerados promissores, principalmente devido ao controle da umidade superficial.

In part 111' of this series it was shown that during the selective oxidation of a 3 1/4 pct Si-Fe alloy in damp hydrogen, only silica, (observed at room temperature) as low cristobalite or low tridy-mite or both, was formed as an oxidation product. In some in- „ stances where the film was fairly thin (probably well under 100A) there was some suggestion of an amorphous form of SiO2. The present investigation of oxidation rate showed that the selective oxidation of silicon-iron can be rather complicated, and apparently impossible to rationalize in an unequivocal manner. In some temperature regions, notably near 800" and 1000°C, the data seem to obey the familiar parabolic rate law. However, at intermediate temperatures complications were noted, some of which are possibly due to the order-disorder reaction in the silicon-iron solid solution. IN an earlier report' it was shown that during the oxidation of 3 1/4 pct Si-Fe alloys in H2O-H2 atmospheres only silica films were formed in the temperature range from 400° to 1000°C in hydrogen nearly saturated with water at room temperatures, or at dew points as low as -45°C. In the work to be reported here, some observations are made on the rate of oxide film formation. As in the earlier investigation, electron diffraction patterns generally showed either low tridymite or low cristobalite or both, except for some very thin films. These sometimes showed diffuse rings, presumably due to a very small crystallite size, or in a few cases, diffuse bands probably caused by an amorphous film. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Vacuum-melted silicon iron made of high-purity materials was rolled into strips 0.014 in. thick, and cut into samples 1/2 in. wide by 1 in. long. Chemical analysis showed 3.2 pct Si and 0.002 pct C. All samples were surface abraded with 600-grit paper, were solvent cleaned, and then placed in an paper,apparatus containing a "Gulbransen type"2 micro-balance. Here the gain in weight of the samples of about 5 sq cm area could be followed as a function of time during the oxidation caused by the water in atmospheres of various controlled water-hydrogen ratios. The water-hydrogen ratios can most easily be described as varying from a dew point of 0°C (PH2O-p^2 = 6.2 x 10-3 , to K (P j -40°C (PH2O/PH^= 1.3 X 10-* Most of the experiments were conducted at the 0°C dew-point atmosphere because drier atmospheres caused so little gain in weight that the accuracy of measurement was poor. Because of this, only the data obtained at PH2O,/P,,,= 6.2 x X3 will be reported. The temperature range extended from 800" to 1000°C; and most of the oxidation runs lasted for about 24 hr. The reproducibility of any reading was about ± 1 ?, but the sensitivity of the balance was about 0.2 ?. The atmosphere, flowing at 200 cm per-min, was preheated to the furnace temperature before contacting the specimen. While the gas flow caused a measurable lift on the sample, it was ordinarily sufficiently constant so that it was not an appreciable source of error. X-ray and electron diffraction checks of the samples before and after oxidation showed no evidence of preferred orientation, either on the metal samples or on the silica films formed. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS The data obtained are summarized in Table I, and some are given in detail in Figs. 1 to 4. In the fourth column of Table I, kp refers to the parabolic rate constant in the expression (?/cm2)2 = kpt + c [1] where ? = micrograms gain in weight kp = parabolic rate constant in units r2 /cm4 t = time in minutes c = constant It will be noted that in many cases no value for kp is given; this is because in these instances the data did not obey the parabolic rate law. The silica film thicknesses given in the last columns are values calculated from the weight gain, an average tridy-mite-crystobalite density, and by assuming a perfectly plane surface. The power required to circulate a gas-solids suspension was determined using a centrifugal compressor and a closed system. The suspension consisted of 18- to 40-micron glass beads in a mixture of 89 percent N2 and 11 percent CO2 at 20 psig. Solids-to-gas (S/G) ratios w re O to 2.2 lb/lb; gas flow rates were l.2 to 2.5 lb/min. Power requirement was found to follow the relationship hp t = hp(. + l), where hp t = the total power, and hpg = the power required for pure gas.

THE Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (30 U.S.C., 321-325, and amendments) become law April 5, 1644, and a period of intensive research and development in this field was begun by the Bureau of Mines. As part of this program bulletins were published on a pressure hydrogenation,3 the Fischer-Tropsch synthesis,4 and oil shale.5 The Bureau also has published a short bibliography on coal gasification,6 mostly of a theoretical nature. Because coal gasification is prerequisite to Hither the Fischer-Tropsch or coal-hydrogenation processes, publishing this sizable, collection of technical information in this form will be valuable. The material is presented in three parts, as follows: I. United States Patents. II. United Kingdom, Australian, Canadian, and South African Patents. III. Belgium, French, German, Italian, and Swedish Patents. The domestic patents for this bulletin were collected between 1963 and 1955. Some of the Foreign Patents were collected at the same time and a few of them later in 1961. Part I was published in 1960; Part II was published in 1962.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo o estudo para otimização de distintas condições de tratamentos térmicos de solubilização e envelhecimento em liga forjada de NiTi rica em Ni visando características e propriedades adequadas para aplicações superelásticas. As características microestruturais e composicionais foram avaliadas por Difração de Raio-X (DRX), por Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV) associada à Difração de Elétrons Retroespalhados (EBSD) e ao Espectrômetro de Energia Dispersiva de Raio-X (EDX), e correlacionadas com as medidas de dureza Vickers. Baseados em resultados da literatura, apresentou características mais promissoras para tratamentos de solubilização a 950ºC por 120 minutos conjugado com envelhecimento a 350ºC por 30 minutos, ambos com resfriamento em água.

O lingotamento contínuo é um processo de solidificação de aço líquido onde o conhecimento de suas variáveis é de extrema importância para a produção de aços de qualidade. Este processo contém um reator denominado distribuidor que se localiza entre a panela e o molde e tem como função tradicional, distribuir o aço que sai da panela para o molde, mas também realiza outras importantes funções. Devido a essa importância no processo, este trabalho objetivou realizar o estudo do escoamento do aço no distribuidor com duas configurações diferentes, sendo uma sem injeção de gás inerte e a outra com injeção de gás inerte. Neste estudo foram utilizados softwares para a realização das simulações matemáticas onde se podem notar as diferenças das curvas DTR, grandezas de turbulência e perfil de velocidade quando se tem ou não a injeção de gás inerte.

Em virtude da necessidade de produção de aços cada vez mais restritivos com relação às faixas de composição química, torna-se necessário o desenvolvimento contínuo de novas ferramentas para o controle do processo de fabricação do aço via aciaria à oxigênio. Neste cenário, propôs-se o desenvolvimento de um modelo de controle dinâmico para os Convertedores LD da Aciaria 1 da Usiminas - Usina de Ipatinga, utilizando o resultado da análise dos gases de exaustão, em conjunto com ferramentas matemáticas de ajuste e análise de dados. Neste trabalho é apresentado o modelo de previsão de carbono construído a partir das curvas das análises dos gases, das quais foram obtidos matematicamente os pontos de interesse: análises instantâneas, a interseção das curvas do CO e do CO2 e o ponto máximo da curva do CO2. O modelo foi desenvolvido utilizando redes neurais e validado utilizando dados históricos do processo.

The high temperature processing of nickel laterite ore is currently dominated by the Rotary Kiln- Electric Furnace (RKEF) technology. The ratio of SiO2/MgO (S/M) in the ore is one of the critical parameters that determines the success of the RKEF process. Incompatible S/M ratios in the ore can cause aggressive chemical interaction between the slag and MgO refractory. The slag-refractory interaction at conditions relevant to nickel laterite ore smelting was investigated in the present study. Synthetic mixtures representing the slag compositions of nickel laterite ore smelting were prepared by mixing MgO, SiO2, Al2O3, CaO, Fe2O3, and Fe and heating the mixtures in steel containers at 1300°C under an argon atmosphere for 3 hrs. Pure MgO crucible were used as containment material in the melting process of the mixtures to represent the MgO refractory. The kinetics of the slagrefractory reaction were investigated using samples with selected initial S/M ratios of 2.0 and 3.0 (wt/wt) (with constant CaO = 3 wt per cent, Al2O3 = 5 wt per cent, FeO = 10 wt per cent) by performing melting at 1500°C in MgO crucibles for 5, 30, and 120 mins under an argon atmosphere. The effect of the S/M ratio in slag on the slag-refractory interaction was also investigated by performing melting of mixtures with different initial S/M ratios of 1.75, 2.0, 2.5, and 3.0 (wt/wt) in MgO crucibles at 1500°C for 120 mins under an argon atmosphere. After the melting process, each sample was quenched in water, mounted in resin, ground, polished, and coated. The interaction between the slags and MgO refractory was then evaluated by analysing the polished samples using a scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS). Thermodynamic simulations using FactSage™ 8.0 thermochemical software were performed based on the experimental slag compositions, refractory, and conditions to support the evaluation process. The results show that a higher S/M ratio in slag leads to a higher tendency for the refractory component to dissolve into the slag. A higher S/M ratio in slag also leads to an increasing extent of solid-state diffusion of iron oxide into the remaining refractory grains. The dissolution of MgO into the slag is rapid; the MgO concentration in the final slag increased by 2.4 wt per cent and 5.7 wt per cent at initial S/M ratios of 2.0 and 3.0 wt/wt, respectively, within 5 and 30 mins of the melting process.

Magnesium alloys usually are superheated before casting in order to ensure fineness of grain. Superheat temperatures in common use range from 1600" to r 7o0°F.; the casting temperature, which depends upon the mold shape, is usually 200° to 300°F. lower. The process of superhcating requires considerable time and seriously shortens the life of the iron pots used. Recently it has been reported1 that if acetylene, carbon dioxide or natural gas is bubbled through molten electrolytic A.S.T.M. No. 4 alloy at 1400°F. for 5 min., grain refinement equivalent to that of superheating will take place. Addition of certain solids such as graphite or aluminum carbide accomplishes the same results? As will be shown in this paper, it is possible to achieve grain refinement in magnesium casting alloys at low temperatures by mechanical stirring of the molten metal for a short time. This process was developed in the course of research work, supervised by the War Metallurgy Committee under the "Restricted' project NRC-550, for the Office of Production Research and Development of the War Production Board. This paper, based on that work, has been released for publication by the O.P.R.D. Materials and Methods The alloys studied were the most common American sand-casting alloys designated as No. 4 and No. 17 by the American Society for Testing Materials. The magnesiun used in these alloys was of both carbothermic3 and electrolytic' origin. Chemical analyses supplied by the producers are shown in Table I. Each heat consisted of approximately 5 lb. of alloy melted in a Tercod crucible. It was refined by fluxing with Permanente No. 7* refining flux at 1300° to 1350°F. After cooling to 1200° to 1250°F., portions of approximately one pound each, were ladled into iron crucibles contained in an electric furnace at about 1250°F. The molten metal was covered with Permanente No. 21 † covering flux and then heated to the temperature to be investigated. Normally each of the four portions was given a different treatment. In a typical case one portion was stirred vigorously for 5 min., acetylene gas was passed through a second portion for 5 min., a third portion was superheated to 1600°F. for 15 min., then . cooled to casting temperature, and the fourth was held for 5 min. at the temperature of stirring or gassing without other treatment. Each portion was then cast into one-inch diameter cylinders in three "nonturbulent" molds of identical shape. One mold was made of cast iron and the other two of baked sand. A escória de aciaria LD é um coproduto abudantemente gerado através da metalurgia primária e secundária, sendo que após seu resfriamento e beneficiamento pode ser aplicado em diversos setores, mas que necessita ser submetido a processo de envelhecimento para minimização da expansão. Em geral, no Brasil, o Método PTM-130/78 é o mais utilizado para avaliar o potencial de expansão, entretanto o método leva 14 dias para obtenção dos resultados. Por meio de uma cooperação técnico-econômica entre a CSN e a EEL-USP, o método de expansão foi correlacionado com as fases identificadas e quantificadas por Difratometria de Raios-X e Método de Rietveld, respectivamente, além de compreender o mecanismo de expansão. Análises de regressão múltipla permitiram ajustar modelos matemáticos com 97,0% de ajuste e uma redução no tempo de ensaio de 14 dias (336 horas) para 7 horas.

Os aços inoxidáveis possuem características essenciais para um bom acabamento quando o que se busca é estética e boa resistência à oxidação. O acabamento polido é muito utilizado em utensílios domésticos, eletrodomésticos e ponteiras de escapamentos de veículos. Em muitos casos são expostos à elevação de temperatura sendo sujeitos à oxidação a quente que pode causar o amarelamento da superfície desses aços. Através de ensaios de oxidação a quente, potencial eletroquímico, microdureza e tensão residual via difração de raios-x foi possível perceber uma diferença entre os acabamentos brilhantes via laminador com cilindros polidos e acabamentos obtidos pelo polimento de rebolos de panos e pastas abrasivas. O ensaio de tensão residual mostrou qualitativamente que o aumento de dureza e o forte amarelamento ocorrido no material com acabamento polido pode ser em função de uma deformação elástica na superfície imposta durante o processo na linha de polimento automático.
