Part I, presented in the June, 1994 issue of the ClM Bulletin, gave a listing of thesis titles. Part II, which consists of edited abstracts of theses considered to be of direct application to mineral deposit studies and exploration, is presented under various themes as follows:A. "The southern Abitibi Belt is the major source of gold in Quebec. Although the northern part of the belt is quickly being developed, the area under study will not be downgraded in the near future because it still contains more than 75% of the known reserves in the belt.Gold is found in a variety of geological environments which are part of a small number of distinct structural patterns. For the exploration geologist, outlining such patterns might be easier and more productive than defining, when it is possible, the exact genetic nature of the gold mineralization.Exploring in the right place has always been one of the main concerns of explorationists. This paper briefly describes the various favourable geological settings, and outlines areas, types of structure and lithologies of high potential for gold exploration in the southern Abitibi Belt.IntroductionThe southern part of the Abitibi Belt is a profilic mining area for precious and base metals (Lulin 1990). Although mineralizing processes and controls of polymetallic deposits are well known and understood (Lydon 1984), almost every gold occurrence is a unique case and numerous models have been proposed (Roberts 1987; Hodgson and McGeehan 1982; Hodgson 1990).This study does not define new genetic models for the formation of gold deposits, neither is it meant to elaborate on the existing ones. A genetic approach, is by definition, theoretical and, to some extent, universal. It helps geologists define types of targets and exploration tools but does not outline or quantify target areas. To tentatively summarize the complexity of a genetic approach, a brief discussion on the various genetic models in vogue in Abitibi and the problems related to their use in exploration can be found at the end of this paper."

The authors conducted a study of backfill practices in underground mines across Canada to assess the current state of backfill usage and to overview potential hazards associated with backfill practice, from preparation to transportation to placement. The primary aim of this study was to cover each component of a typical mine backfill system, and to identify potential incidents leading to the disruption of backfilling operations and any associated corrective actions. This paper, Part I of the study, deals with surface operations consisting of backfill material supply and backfill plant preparation. Part II of the study, which deals with underground operations consisting of backfill transportation and backfill placement, is also presented in these proceedings. A review of safety measures associated with current backfill operations and recommendations for procedures of best practice that should be implemented to reduce fill-related hazards in all mine backfill workplace environments are presented. In general it has been found that system failures normally lead only to minor losses to the operations.

Due to the increases available base of scientific knowledge, increased independent review required by worldwide security exchanges, and the need for accuracy in characterizing mine water resources, it has become necessary to produce a more accurate hydrologic balance. This presentation provides a critical review of the steps and tools to compile a complete hydrologic review of a mine property. The forces of regulation, increased scientific analysis, better tools, and stakeholder expectations have created a perfect storm of accuracy demand. Ausenco has developed protocol to achieve the desired end.

Despite the convenient subdivision of extractive metallurgy into hydro- and pyro- divisions, many flowsheets contain both types of process. When complex materials are used as feed, combinations of hydro- and pyro-metallurgical processes are even more common. Hydrometallurgy is used to treat many by-products and waste-products. (Bio-metallurgical processes may be considered to be a sub-set of hydro-metallurgical processes.) Combinations of the different processes in the Australian metallurgical industry are described. Selected international examples demonstrate that the use of combked processes is not a unique. Antipodean phenomenon. The motives for selection of combined pyre- and hydro-metallurgical processes in a flowsheet are examined.

Surface subsidence caused by underground mining is described through complementary influence functions. The complementary functions developed here differ from the simple functions previously used in that the surface displacement is the result of the combined contributions of the mined and unmined zones. This eliminates computational difficulties experienced with the simple functions in determining the deflections above the rib side and in the eventual application of influence functions to complex room-and-pillar configurations. Although the analysis framework presented is intended for predicting subsidence over complex mine configurations, use of the complementary functions is illustrated adequately by application to a longwall panel of the Old Ben No. 24 coal mine.

The compared advantages of digital and analogue computers for solving ventilation problems have for many years been a matter of discussion among the specialists whose respective arguments have prevailed in turn depending on the progress of technology. In the French coal mines however none of these two techniques has superseded the other so far. In France, between 1956 and 1962 only the digital computer and from 1962 to 1967 only the analogue computer was used. Since then they are both used concurrently and complementarily. Depending on the problems dealt with, the most advantageous method is chosen in each case. In the case of ventilation planning for projected workings, it is possible to test variant forms of the development plans and many parameters can be varied. In such a case the flexibility of the analogue computer is a great help. Wrong lines taken will be rapidly abandoned and little by little solutions will be found. By examining the results of a test, new ideas will generally come into the mind and they can be tested right away. Such an investigation is always-carried out in conjunction with the engineers of the mine concerned. In complex networks it often leads to solu¬tions which could not have been devised from the start. The same work could be done by using a numerical method and the digital computers operating in the different coal mine districts, but for the same tests, the time required would be much longer and the participants would not be encouraged to use their imagination so intensively. Or the other hand for calculations of ventilation networks in ventilation surveying, use is made of the digital computer which gives the possibility of storing the data corresponding to the different mines concerned. The questions to be solved concern problems for which the ventilation network is essentially known, and in which only a small number of parameters can be varied. The few possible alternatives to be calculated can therefore be handled by the digital computer in spite of the relative lack of flexibility of the method. To sum up our ventilation studies are conducted in France as follows: - For ventilation studies and modifications due to projected workings use is made of the ana¬logue computer. For a given mine the updating of such ventilation studies is carried out every 3 or 5 years according to the progression of the workings. - For ventilation surveying while normal working operations are in progress, use is made of the digital computer.

Computer simulation of the physics involved in conventional rock blasting can be split into two phases; transient stress wave propagation and rock motion. Because the two phases involve totally different mechanisms and time scales, they must be numerically modeled with two different computer programs. The first phase is usually modeled with a finite element or finite difference code which treats the rock ss a continuum and simulates the transient stress wave and subsequent fragmentation of the rock. The second phase is usually modeled with a distinct element technique where the rock mass after fragmentation is no longer treated as a continuum but as a finite number of distinct particles that interact with each other through collision mechanics.

The key design parameters of roof bolting using expansion - shell type support for underground coal mine roof support are bolt length, bolt spacing, installed load and anchorage capacity. Depending on the utilization of suspension effect or friction effect, the bolt length is dictated either by the distance between the roof surface and the first overlying strong strata encountered or the desired magnitude of reduction in bending stress at the roof surface, The current prevailing practices about the bolt spacing and installed load are that an initial torque of 125 - 170 ft-lbs is applied and the bolts are spaced at 4- or 5- ft. square grid pattern. This seems to be a rather broad generalization in view of the great geological variances which are expected in underground coal mines. A modest evaluation program to measure the effectiveness of current roof bolting practices is to monitor the load history of roof bolts during a complete mining cycle including the phases of room development and pillar robbing. The load history, when compared with the anchorage capacity of roof bolts determined by in-situ pull tests, will provide information for evaluating the installed load, the bolt spacing as well as the specifications for structural and anchorage characteristics of the bolt assemblies. This paper presents a case history of monitoring the complete load histories of roof bolts in an underground coal mine of Pittsburgh seam.

BIOX® has been successfully demonstrated over the past 2 decades for the recovery of gold from refractory sulphide concentrates. To date 12 successful BIOX® plants have been installed in 8 countries spanning 4 continents with the 13th installation currently nearing completion in the Philippines. In 2010 BIOMIN introduced the ASTER™ process for improved water balances in commercial BIOX® applications by supporting tightening environmental legislation on water usage and availability in both arid and tropical regions. Previously, a common challenge for BIOX® plants was the inability to recycle thiocyanate containing water due to the low tolerance of the organisms. ASTER™, a biological thiocyanate and cyanide destruction process, renders a non-toxic solution for re-use in BIOX®. Two commercial ASTER™ plants are in operation with the 3rd ASTER™ plant under construction in the Philippines. A 3rd BIOMIN technology, specifically developed for double refractory ores is available for implementation. The HiTeCC process has shown considerable success on ores where competition from disseminated carbon has rendered ineffective gold recoveries. Through HiTeCC, gold is desorbed from the carbonaceous matter by manipulating the ionic strength and temperature of conventionally treated CIL product. One Australian commercial plant utilises HiTeCC while a 2nd installation is set for commissioning 4th Quarter 2014. BIOMIN’s premier solutions for refractory gold processing are described herein.

There are about 1.341 trillion tons (t) of proven coal reserves in China, of which 279.58 billion t are available for mine well construction basis. Thick coal seams are 44% of the reserves. The production of thick coal seams exploitation is over 45% of the total coal production. Full-seam mining and fully-mechanized mining for large mining height is the technology development direction of thick and extra thick seam mining. It is also the important way to achieve efficient and intensive mining with the characteristics of high production, high mechanization, high efficiency and low energy consumption, etc. Complete set of technology and equipment of fully-mechanized top caving for large mining height of full-seam (7m) mining and extra thick seam ( 14-20m) has been gradually mature and for demonstration application by the joint research of government, enterprises, universities, scientific research organizations and users. It has solved some technical problems of coal face for large mining height (over 7m) such as the coal wall spalling control, stability of support, wall rock coupling, cooperation work of mining and caving, full roadway support for super large section, end support, equipment matching of coal shearers, hydraulic support and scraper conveyor. It has developed key equipments including powerful hydraulic support of fully-mechanized mining and fully-mechanized top caving for large mining height, electrically-driven coal shearer with high speed and reliability, scraper and belt conveyer with big capacity, soft-start and high reliability, automatic control system of coal face with the core of electric-hydraulic control, bolting drill boom large section coal roadway shearer, heavy auxiliary transport equipment. The operation rates of fully-mechanized top caving equipment for full-seam and large mining height are 94% and 92.1%, and recovery ratios are 93.6% and 88.9% respectively. The annual raw coal production of single work face is over 10 Mt. The automation and intelligentization level have been clearly improved. The exploitation of thick and extra thick coal seam that is safe and efficient has been achieved in China.
