"The digestion of minerals in strong acids or at elevated temperatures can result in the release of large amounts of silicic acid which can polymerize in solution to form colloidal silica and gels. Colloidal silica can cause a number of problems including interfering with flocculation, initiating crud formation in solvent extraction (SX), decreasing SX extraction kinetics and increasing SX phase disengagement times. Huntsman’s POLYSIL® polyether coagulants have a “lock and key” relationship with the surface of colloidal silica to help lower the concentration of these particles in solution, improve process efficiency and reduce reagent losses by minimizing crud formation. This paper investigates some of the issues caused by colloidal silica in hydrometallurgy processes and illustrates how the use of POLYSIL® coagulants has helped to improve process outcomes. INTRODUCTION Coagulation differs from flocculation in a number of ways. Coagulants are relatively small molecules that modify the surfaces of fine particles, weakening repulsive forces between them and allowing particles to stick together, while flocculants are generally molecules that are large enough to bridge the boundary layers between the particles. With flocculation, addition rate and mixing all make a difference to the flocs formed. Coagulation, on the other hand, is an equilibrium process. With coagulation it is only necessary to achieve good mixing, and coagulates will form as Brownian motion pushes the particles into each other. In real systems, this process is complete within seconds. Huntsman’s POLYSIL® polyether based coagulants have a strong affinity with the surface of colloidal silica formed by the polymerization of silicic acid. While silica found in minerals has a low aqueous solubility, large amounts of silica as silicic acid can be released as these minerals are digested in strong acids at elevated temperatures. The solubility of free silicic acid is about 150 ppm under pH conditions typical in acid leach environments (1), so the bulk of the silica will polymerize in solution to form colloidal silica. Colloidal silica can pass through a hydrometallurgy process without affecting any of the operations. However, it can cause a number of problems. These include gelling in a leach, interfering with flocculation or crystallization, initiating crud formation (2,3,4), decreasing extraction kinetics and increasing phase disengagement times (5,6) in solvent extraction. In these cases, coagulating the silica with POLYSIL® coagulants can reduce or eliminate the problem by enabling these particles to be flocculated and removed from the solution."

"Foreword by Lisa SchlinkSuperintendent, operations, Freeport-McMoRan Inc.,Green Valley, AZ, USAThe sixth annual Student Poster Contest hosted by the Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division of the Society for Mining, Metallurgy & Exploration was held during the 2015 SME Annual Conference and Expo in Denver, CO. The contest had another record-breaking attendance of 31 entries: 27 graduate and four undergraduate. The universities represented were: Colorado School of Mines, South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, University of Kentucky, University of Utah, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, University of Wyoming and West Virginia University.The competition began with an extended abstract review by a panel of judges selected from MPD members. At the SME Annual Conference, all students displayed their posters, highlighting their research. The students with the top abstracts from the graduate and undergraduate divisions presented their research at the MPD Student Poster Session Wednesday morning. The panel of judges then provided tallied scores for the abstract, poster and presentation to determine the winners of the 2015 Student Poster Contest. The first- and second-place winners of both the graduate and undergraduate divisions received $1,000 and $500 scholarships, respectively. The third through seventh places received $200 each, and all other entrants received $100 each and were invited to join the MPD Luncheon.In the undergraduate division, Annette Hein of the University of Wyoming received first place for her research on “Solvent Extraction of Europium from a Nitric Acid Solution.” Second place went to Jennifer Galvin of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology for her research titled “Solvent Extraction of Neodymium Using PC88A.”In the graduate division, Caelen Anderson of the Colorado School of Mines received first place for his research titled “Fundamentals of Rare-earth Flotation Surface Chemistry: Hydroxamate Adsorption on Bastnasite”. This is Caelen’s fourth year placing in the top finisher. Second place in the graduate division went to Seyed Hassan Amini of West Virginia University for his research on “Ultra Clean Coal Production for the Solar-cell Industry.”The 2015 Student Poster Contest was chaired by Lisa Schlink (Freeport- McMoRan Inc.) and Emily Sarver (Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University). The panel of judges included Aaron Noble (West Virginia University), Nick Gow (FLSmidth), Ren Bryce (Freeport-McMoRan Inc.), David Perkins (Derrick Corp.), Jim Metsa (Weir Minerals) and Scott Shuey (Newmont).A special thank you is extended to the sponsors of the MPD Student Poster Contest, to all the students who participated and to the panel of judges. "With increasing demand for steel and depletion of high-grade iron ore deposits, more research efforts are being directed toward extending the life of existing ore reserves and developing technology to treat low-grade iron ore resources. Among all the reported technologies, biotechnologies in mineral processing – specifically bioleaching and microbially induced flotation – have emerged to be considered as low-cost, environmentally friendly potential alternatives to many of the current mineral processing techniques. This paper provides a comprehensive review of current research on the use of microorganisms for iron ore beneficiation and, further, discusses the applicability of bioleaching, bioflotation and bioflocculation for the beneficiation of low-grade iron ores.IntroductionIncreasing global demand for raw materials has led to diminishing resources of high-grade iron ore. As a result, the mining and utilization of low-grade hematite, limonite, specularite, siderite and goethite ores have attracted more and more attention. However, these types of iron ores are of complex paragenesis and fine disseminated grain size, and often contaminated by phosphorus in the form of solid solution. The distribution of phosphorus throughout the iron mineral crystals prevents the effective use of physical separation techniques, and these complex ores are at present largely untapped due to a lack of cost-effective and efficient processing methods. Chemical leaching and roasting-magnetic separation approaches have been mainly tested only on the laboratory scale and are all either cost prohibitive or ineffective when used on low-grade complex iron ores."

"A lot of incorrect, dangerous and misleading statements about the effect of CO2 on the human body can still be found in the internet, the media and in books. It is a fact that already low concentrations can lead to critical reactions, higher concentrations cause a narcosis. The real effect is not a lack of oxygen but an inner suffocation. The breathing reflex is decreased and the transport of oxygen in the blood is reduced due to a low pH value of the blood. Furthermore a reduced oxygen content in the air can also lead to the failure of diesel engines. MOTIVE Different gases can appear in active mines as well in abandoned mines, adits and caves. The most dangerous gases are CO, NO/NO2, H2S, SO2, CH4 and CO2. Although the general danger arising from these gases is mostly known some aspects are underestimated. Furthermore misleading or wrong statements exist about the detection and the effect of gases on the human body. This is especially true for CO2. In the last years a couple of accidents happened with a great number of injured persons and unfortunately also some fatalities. As a result wrong information and comments about the effect of CO2 have been published in the media. A huge unexpected CO2 outburst in a potash mine showed again some additional problems and limits for rescue troops. ORIGIN OF CO2 AND MISLEADING STATEMENTS ABOUT THE EFFECT ON THE HUMAN BODYCarbon dioxide can appear as free gas in the earth crust. It is especially known in significant concentrations in some potash deposits, in hard coal mines and some caves. Furthermore it can be formed due to complete oxidation of carbon. It can appear in technical processes. It is also used for or in technical processes, as fire extinguishing agent, as cooling agent, it is contained (added) in sparkling water or other soft drinks and it is formed by fermentation processes. Up to today a lot of wrong information about the effect of CO2 on the human body is published or is still in the mind of many people and unfortunately even in the mind of members or leaders of rescue troops. On August 16th 2008 a faulty CO2 extinguishing installation in the city of Mönchengladbach/Germany caused the injury of 107 people and the evacuation of further 150 people /1/. People on the streets became unconsciousness and felt down. Fortunately all could be rescued due to the immediate rescue operation of local fire fighters. Furthermore the CO2 concentration on the ground was diminished by help of a helicopter. What could have happen with the engine will be discussed later. After 6 days a second similar accident took place /2/. In the news members of the rescue teams explained that CO2 leads to suffocation due to a lack of oxygen. This is wrong! Also cave explorers often say that a burning candle can detect a low oxygen and/or high Carbon dioxide content in the air. This is also wrong and deadly dangerous! Similar statements we find nowadays in the internet /3, 4 and many other/. In a forum “science and mathematics > chemistry” several people say that winegrowers go with a candle into the vine-cellar to detect CO2 /5/. Again: this can be deadly! Another dangerous statement is that CO2 in higher concentrations leads to headaches so people should leave such areas. A last example found in the literature is that at 3 % the breathing volume is doubled and at a concentration of 20 % one can felt some warmth on the skin. Both is not wrong but can lead to false conclusions. /6/"

"The objective of this study was to develop a laboratory-scale method to rank the ignition and fire hazards of commonly used underground mine materials and to eliminate the need for expensive large-scale tests that are currently being used. A radiant panel apparatus was used to determine the relevant thermal characteristics of the materials: time to ignition, critical heat flux for ignition, heat of gasification, and mass loss rate. Three thermal parameters, TRP, TP1, and TP4, were derived from the data, then were developed and subsequently used to rank the combined ignition and fire hazards of the combustible materials from low hazard to high hazard. The results compared favorably with thermal and ignition hazards of similar materials reported in the literature and represent a simpler approach to quantifying these combustible hazards. INTRODUCTION The potential fire hazard from combustible mine materials is a major concern that can impact the safety of mine workers. Combustible materials tend to be solids and within this category there exist degrees of flammability and fire resistance. These materials may be readily ignitable or they may be able to withstand high temperatures and high heat fluxes. Presently, no simple methodology exists to assess these possible fire behaviors and quantify the resultant fire hazards. Thus, better knowledge of the thermal properties and chemical characteristics of combustible materials is of great importance to the safety of mine workers. Tewarson [1994] developed a methodology which he subsequently used to evaluate the ignition and fire resistant properties of combustible mine materials, but these efforts are more than 20 years old, and do not include many of the new materials used in mines today. The standard practice that has evolved for a combustible material to be approved by the Mine Safety and Health Administration for use in underground coal mines is to conduct extensive and costly large-scale experiments on each new material that is used in a particular mine operation. Results of such tests provide pass/fail answers to the questions of a material’s flammability or fire resistance, yet they provide little, if any, information that will lead to a better understanding of the basic mechanisms involved. Therefore, there is a need to quantify material flammability properties and to develop a methodology to rank the ignition and fire hazards of commonly used underground mine materials. During the heating and ignition stages of combustible materials, properties such as smolder susceptibility, minimum surface temperature for ignition, thermal conductivity, heat capacity, density, and heat of gasification are known to be important [Apte, 2006]. During the flaming stage, additional parameters, such as the heat of combustion, heat release rate, flame spread rate, yields of soot/smoke, and toxic gas production become more important as the flame is sustained and spreads. In very general terms, the heat flux incident on the surface of a solid combustible not only controls the rate of temperature increase of the local fuel surfaces, resulting in expulsion of fuel vapors that sustain the flaming process, but also the heating of other combustible surfaces that subsequently ignite and spread flame."

"INTRODUCTION The Central District of the Florida phosphate industry is located in southwest Polk and southeast Hillsborough Counties, with the Southern Extension lying in western Hardee, eastern Manatee and northwest De Soto Counties. (Lawver, 1983) Figure 1 shows the major phosphate formations in Florida. Almost all Florida phosphate production has been in the Central district with additional production from a mine in the Northern District. The Central District is comprised of the Bone Valley Deposit, a relatively thin layer of high grade ore which has been the main source of phosphate mining for decades, and the Hawthorn formation, a thick but low grade formation which covers most of peninsular Florida. (Lawver, 1983) Florida phosphate producers use the Crago process where calcium phosphate is floated with anionic, fatty acid type collectors followed by cationic reverse flotation of silica with amine type collectors. The phosphate matrix is put through various size separation techniques to obtain a typical -28 Mesh (< 700 µm) particle size for fine flotation and a -16 mesh (< 1190 µm) to +28 mesh (> 700 µm) particle size for coarse flotation. In some cases this coarse fraction can be sent to shipping as an intermediate product. The +16 mesh (>1190 µm) to – ¾“ (19 mm) fraction is sent to shipping as a final product called pebble. Figure 2 demonstrates a simplified diagram of the mining and processing of calcium phosphate (matrix) through a Central Florida mine. Particle size and mineralogy are important considerations in the Crago process for two main reasons, the mass of the particle and the particle surface area. Both of which are dependent on the coordination of the anionic collector to available Ca2+ sites on the minerals’ surface. The increased surface area, and available Ca2+, of the smaller apatite particles will allow for more fatty acid molecules to coordinate than the larger particles, with a lower availability of Ca2+. So, the larger particle would require more collector to be introduced in the system to sufficiently cover the apatite particles to produce a surface sufficiently hydrophobic to attach to air bubbles allowing flotation to occur. (Guan, 2009) The Bone Valley deposit has very favorable flotation characteristics when compared to other mining ores around the world. The matrix of the Bone Valley is relatively high grade, BPL (Bone Phosphate in Lime) values typically range from 6-18%, BPL recoveries, from such a matrix, can often be achieved above 85+% with fatty acid based collectors dosed below 1 #/ton. As mentioned, the sizing is an important step as there is also high grade apatite in the +16 mesh (1mm) that is screened to a final product grade, 60-65% BPL. The lack of quartz in the larger size fraction has allowed the Central District to produce high quality, low cost phosphate product, called pebble, through effective screening with no further beneficiation. "In 2008, the world quietly hit a milestone that did not receive much fanfare or publicity, but it hit one that marked a turning point in the history of mankind and the way the planet is and will be inhabited in the future. It was in 2008 that, for the first time, more than half of the world’s population, an estimated 3.3 billion people, resided in urban areas. The world’s population had moved from being a majority of agricultural and rural society to an urban society. Andrew Whalley, deputy chairman for Grimshaw Architects, said this change in where and how people live will continue to increase urban populations and, by 2050, it is estimated that more than 6.4 billion people will live in urban areas. To meet these needs, Whalley, speaking during the keynote session of the 2105 Cutting Edge conference in Denver, CO, said future cities will have to be reimagined and redesigned to be more efficient. A large part of that design will be in the infrastructure of those cities.At the Fourth Annual Cutting Edge Conference, Sept. 21-23, much of the discussion was around how the tunneling and underground construction industries improve cities in a number of ways, including societal, environmental and in overall efficiency. There was talk, not just about the improvements that society enjoys at the completion of such projects, but also about the challenges faced by the owner and contractor in the construction of such projects.The conference, titled Urban Tunneling, brought together some of the top minds in the industry to not only discuss the issues faced today, but also those that will shape the industry in the future.For his part, Whalley spoke about a number of projects around the world and how they have impacted society in ways beyond simply providing a better means for transportation of people or water. Notably, he spoke about the Crossrails project in London.London is a city of 8.6 million people and a history that dates back nearly 2,000 years. It is a great example of the challenges the industry faces in bringing modern efficiencies to an established city.Running more than 100 km (62 miles) with more than 42 km (26 miles) of tunnels passing through 40 stations, including 10 new stations, the project is the largest in Europe and will transform the way people move about the city."

"The Central Subway is Phase 2 of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency’s (SFMTA) Third Street Light Rail project and will extend the existing Phase 1 initial operating segment from its current connection to the Embarcadero line at Fourth and King streets along Fourth Street to Market Street, under the Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) and Muni Metro tunnels and then north beneath Stockton Street to Chinatown (Fig. 1).Total new track to be constructed as part of the Phase 2 work consists of approximately 734 m (2,410 ft) of surface track and 2,636 m (8,650 ft) of tunnels. The tunnels were constructed as twin, singletrack bores by two tunnel boring machines (TBMs) (Johnson, 2014) moving north from the southern end of the launch box under the I 80 freeway between Bryant and Harrison streets. North of Chinatown Station the TBMs continued another approximately 683 m (2,240 ft) to a retrieval shaft near Columbus Ave. at Washington Square. The project also includes five cross passages to connect the two tunnels, and three underground stations (the Yerba Buena/ Moscone Station, Union Square/Market Street Station and Chinatown Station.)Excavation of the twin tunnels was performed with two TBMs, with both TBMs driving northward from the launch box. TBM excavation was performed such that the location of the machines was staggered to separate the active excavation faces by a minimum of 91 m (300 ft) between headings. This minimum separation was maintained until the first TBM arrived at the retrieval shaft plug, at which time the separation requirement was relaxed.Excavation began with the “southbound” (SB) tunnel which will ultimately accommodate the southbound TBM light rail trains followed by the second TBM in the “northbound” (NB) tunnel. With the completion of the drives in June 2014, cross passage excavation then began and was completed in April 2015. Overall, construction of the Central Subway tunnels was a success considering the nature and complexity of the project. Additional details of the completion of the Central Subway tunnels are presented in another paper from the RETC 2015 conference (Leong et al., 2015)."

"The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) has recently developed a series of models utilizing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to study gas distribution around a continuous mining machine with various fan-powered flooded bed scrubber discharge configurations. CFD models utilizing Species Transport Model without reactions in FLUENT were constructed to evaluate the redirection of scrubber discharge toward the mining face rather than behind the return curtain. The following scenarios are considered in this study: 100% of the discharge redirected back towards the face on the off-curtain side of the continuous miner; 100% of the discharge redirected back towards the face, but divided equally to both sides of the machine; and 15% of the discharge redirected toward the face on the off-curtain side of the machine, with 85% directed into the return. These models were compared to a model with a conventional scrubber discharge where air is directed away from the face into the return. The CFD models were calibrated and validated based on experimental data and accurately predicted sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) gas levels at four gas monitoring locations. One additional prediction model was simulated to consider a different scrubber discharge angle for the 100% redirected, equally divided case. These models identified relatively high gassy areas around the continuous miner which may not warrant their use in coal mines with medium to high methane liberation rates. This paper describes the methodology used to develop the CFD models, and the validation of the models based on experimental data.INTRODUCTION Methane gas and respirable dust are two hazards frequently encountered at continuous miner (CM) operations. An accumulation of both methane gas and coal dust may lead to massive explosions underground [1], and overexposure to respirable coal dust can result in pneumoconiosis (commonly referred to as “Black Lung Disease”) in coal workers [2]. Current U.S. federal coal mine regulations limit concentrations of methane gas to below 1% at the face area and require exposures to respirable coal dust to be at or less than 2.0 mg/m3 for an 8 h shift average. Begin on August 1, 2016; the overall respirable dust standard in coal mines is reduced from 2.0 to 1.5 mg/m3 for full shift sampling. If the quartz content of the dust exceeds 5% by weight, the dust standard becomes more stringent, reducing the allowable concentration to the value of 10 divided by the % quartz."

"Previously, Gibbs’ phase rule was applied to mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams for the Cu-As-S-H2O system. Diagrams were generated using the stoichiometry of enargite as a basis. In this study, the calculations were expanded to cover the stoichiometries of three other Cu-As-S minerals (tennantite, sinnerite, and lautite) and compared to enargite. Stability regions within the resulting EH-pH diagrams were found to change with stoichiometry such that a particular mineral would predominate if its stoichiometry was used in the calculation. Solution speciation was also found to vary, with thioarsenate being the best example. This stoichiometric effect helps to explain results reported in the literature and would be difficult to realize if it were not for mass-balanced calculations. INTRODUCTION A comprehensive thermodynamic review has recently been conducted on the aqueous copper-arsenic-sulfur system (Gow et al., 2014a-d). The free energies of over 100 species were collected from various authors and thermodynamic databases to produce mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams, using the thermodynamic equilibrium calculation software, STABCAL (Huang, 2014). The full database was listed and discussed by Gow et al. (2014A). Resulting diagrams were generated for enargite and confirmed with Raman spectroscopy using bulk mineral electrodes in order to identify reactions spectroelectrochemically. Theoretical calculations agreed well with the experimental results under alkaline conditions (Gow et al., 2014a), acid conditions (Gow et al., 2014b), and alkaline sulfide leaching conditions (Gow et al., 2014c). In this study, additional mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams are generated by changing the copper-arsenic-sulfur stoichiometry from enargite (Cu3AsS4) to tennantite (Cu12As4S13), sinnerite (Cu6As4S9) and lautite (CuAsS). Regions for the thermodynamically stable species are shown to change with the four different mineral compositions. Potential leach conditions, both for co-dissolution and selective dissolution techniques, were examined for differences in predominant species according to changing copper-to-arsenic ratios, sulfur compositions, and sulfur oxidation states."

"Productivity in openpit mines depends on the observation and adjustment of critical phases of operation. As one of the most expensive activities in openpit production, optimization of the load-haul-dump cycle becomes a critical aspect to address. Using simulation techniques and an ad hoc methodology for analyzing the key performance indicators (KPIs) involved in the production cycle, it is possible to compare actual performance and ideal operating conditions and develop an alert system when operating conditions are subpar with the expected production standards.Study objectivesThe purpose of this work is to implement a methodology for optimizing the haulage cycle by identifying and adjusting the factors that affect the cycle time performance. The methodology includes the implementation of an alert system emitting warning messages when one or several trucks are idle, or when the time of completing production tasks is falling outside a predefined value. This alert is compared with predefined KPIs and is used to determine corrective actions.The alert will:• Demonstrate the benefits of time analysis and how this affects the productivity results in the mining process.• Demonstrate the utility of KPIs in the extraction of ore and waste and how they help to identify equipment performance.• Develop software interfaces to visualize the alert system in order to increase awareness in the operations supervisor.• Make recommendations for future applications that can help improve the productive process of an openpit mine.Problem statementTransporting material in openpit mines may require the utilization of high capacity equipment, which also represents an elevated cost per hour. A supervisory system that controls the adequate distribution of trucks and shovels by providing the operational status of each unit shall contribute to increase productivity while subsequently reducing operational costs. Nevertheless, there is an issue with certain dead times such as queue trucks for loading, trucks waiting to be loaded and other delays. This creates inefficiencies in fuel consumption and energy utilization.For the identification of delays, a contextbased system could be required in order to help optimize the haulage cycle time by controlling delays in loading, haulage and dumping. After applying this methodology, efforts were focused in correcting out-of-standard performance values."

"The Sydvaranger magnetite mine closed in 1996 due to low iron ore prices and was reopened in 2009. The flowsheet has remained more or less as in the old plant, based upon two grinding steps followed by magnetic separation. The magnetite is free of harmful elements and should be attractive on the high quality market. This requires a concentrate containing less than 2% SiO2, which previously was achieved by amine flotation. Amine was preferred because it could be used with sea water. The use of amine is now restricted by the Norwegian Climate and Pollution Agency. Therefore, testwork to replace cationic with anionic flotation was done. Activation of quartz with Ca or Mg ions prior to anionic flotation was shown by research from 1960 to 1980 to be effective under laboratory conditions. The old research results have been followed up in order to make a commercial process for Sydvaranger. Calcium activation works excellently with all Sydvaranger ores, including the ones containing amphibole minerals, but Ca activation requires the high and not environmentally friendly pH of 12.4. Magnesium activation at pH 10.5 is a little more challenging, because the maximum concentration of MgOH+ is about 100 times lower than that of CaOH+. Fortunately, the major impurity in the main Bjornevatn orebody is quartz, which responds well to Mg activation. The process does not appear to depend much upon water quality, as the silicates may already be activated during grinding and magnetic separation in recycled water. The new process is environmentally friendly, as only well-known household reagents are used; oleic acid or tall oil, dextrin, sodium hydroxide and magnesium chloride at pH 10.5.IntroductionThe processing plant of Sydvaranger Gruve AS (SVG) is located in the port town of Kirkenes in the northernmost part of Norway, 10 km by rail from the high-grade deposit of Bjornevatn. This plant has been able to beneficiate magnetite ore to up to 99.5% purity, as described by Sandvik and Malvik (2001). Using the magnetic properties of the ore and making the most out of its enviable liberation characteristics, the original plant consisted of ball mills and 600-mm magnetic separators. "A direct route for the reduction of magnesium oxide to magnesium using thermal plasma processing, with methane as the reducing gas, has been systematically evaluated. A feasibility study of the reduction reaction has been performed on the MgO-CH4 system at different methane concentrations and temperatures. The effects of changes in the key process parameters, such as the oxide-to-methane ratio and plasma power, on the yield of magnesium have been systematically evaluated. A maximum yield of about 61 mol% Mg was obtained using power of 20.0 kW and a molar ratio of MgO:CH4=1:1. Phase, morphological, elemental and binding energy analyses were performed on the product powders to understand the reduction reaction. Surface oxidation was observed in smaller magnesium particles in all the experiments, while the in-situ sintering of magnesium rods was observed at a molar ratio of MgO:CH4=1:1.5. "The present study was carried out to develop an economically feasible and environmentally friendly technique to extract metals such as Al, Fe, Cu, Zn and Ni from electronic scrap by employing Penicillium chrysogenum strain KBS3. Studies were carried out in various leaching modes, including one-step leaching with combined growth and leaching phases (Mode 1), two-step leaching with alternative growth and leaching phases (Mode 2), spent medium leaching with separated growth and leaching phases (Mode 3), leaching with fresh growth medium without fungal culture (Mode 4), leaching with deionized water (Mode 5) and leaching with commercial organic acids (Mode 6). The main lixiviants produced in leaching Mode 1 were citric, tartaric, oxalic and gluconic acids in concentrations of 12, 2.5, 1.8 and 152 mM, whereas in leaching Mode 2, the concentrations were 15, 0.5, 1.0 and 1,162 mM, respectively. In leaching Mode 3, 63 mM citric acid, 23 mM tartaric acid and 29 mM oxalic acid was observed. At 5% pulp density, both leaching Modes 1 and 2 showed similar metal extraction yields from the electronic scrap at 35º C. Approximately 96% Al, 98% Zn, 48% Cu, 25% Fe, 66% Pb and 73% Ni were extracted in leaching Mode 1 in 14 days. In leaching Mode 3, 85% Al, 81% Zn, 97% Cu, 22% Fe, 50% Pb and 63% Ni were extracted in 14 days. The extraction yield of Cu was much lower in leaching Modes 1 and 2 (48- 50%) than in leaching Mode 3 (97%), as well as in leaching Mode 6 (98%) with organic acids, including citric, tartaric, oxalic and gluconic acids.IntroductionTechnical innovations in electrical and electronic equipment with new functionalities and designs stimulate consumer purchasing and lead a rapid increase in the production of waste materials. Terazono et al. (2006) have reviewed the data on electronic waste generation in different parts of the world. Studies by Bertram et al. (2002) have also affirmed that waste electrical and electronic components are the fastest growing waste category, which emphasizes the need for efficient recycling strategies. The recycling of electronic waste is an important subject, not only from the perspective of waste treatment, but also from the perspective of the recovery of valuable materials. However, the recycling of electronic scrap is still limited, due to the heterogeneity of the materials present in the products (Veit et al., 2005).Bioleaching-based processes offer a number of advantages over conventional pyro or hydrometallurgical methods (Lee et al. 2007; Lee and Pandey, 2012). These advantages include simple, inexpensive (in some cases) and ecofriendly approaches and the generation of less active leach residue relative to other metallurgical processes. Although biohydrometallurgical processes have been successfully applied to the leaching of metals from ores (Olson et al., 2003; Rawlings, 2002), data pertaining to the application of these processes for the extraction of electronic scrap are still scarce. Recently, a few studies have been undertaken for the extraction of metals from electronic scrap/ printed circuit boards (Brandl et al., 2001; Faramarzi et al., 2004; Ilyas et al., 2007; Ilyas et al., 2010). These studies were conducted with mesophilic chemolithotrophic bacteria (Acidithiobacillus ferooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans), cyanogenic bacteria (Chromobacterium violaceum) or moderate thermophilic bacteria (Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans). However, compared to bacterial leaching, fungal leaching has several advantages, including (i) the ability to grow at a higher pH, thus making it more suitable for the bioleaching of alkaline solid waste; (ii) a generally faster leaching process with a shorter lag phase and (iii) the chelation of excreted metabolites (e.g., organic acids) with metal ions, thus reducing toxicity to the biomass (Burgstaller and Schinner, 1993; Aung and Ting, 2005)."

"INTRODUCTION Dissolved salts build up in leach solutions over time as leach solutions mature. Iron can be particularly problematic for hydrometallurgical copper production as it can compete with copper for separation during solvent extraction (SX), leading to iron bleed through and reduced electrowinning (EW) efficiency. In its ferric form (Fe+3) it precipitates as a hydroxide at fairly low pH and can promote clogging and disrupted flow within leach pads as a result of localized pH deviations – such as might result from weather events. The solids formed can cause relatively irreversible degradation to pad productivity. The precipitation pH point for solids formation falls as the ferric (Fe+3) concentration increases, making the issue more prevalent as leach circuits for ore bodies containing appreciable iron get older. It can also be more of a concern when leaching lower grade ore like tailings where lower copper content may increase iron/copper ratios which may increase iron accumulation rates. "In underground continuous mining operations, ventilation, water sprays, and machine-mounted flooded bed scrubbers are the primary means of controlling respirable dust exposures at the working face. Changes in mining arrangements, such as, face ventilation configuration, orientation of crosscuts mined in relation to the section ventilation, and equipment operator positioning, can impact the ability of dust controls to reduce occupational respirable dust exposures. This study reports and analyzes dust concentrations measured by the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research for both remote-controlled continuous mining machine operators and haulage operators at ten U.S. underground mines. Results of these respirable dust surveys show that continuous miner exposures varied little based on depth of cut, but are significantly affected by ventilation configuration. Haulage operators experienced elevated concentrations in blowing face ventilation. The type of cut influenced exposures, with elevated exposures observed for both continuous miner operators and haulage operators when working in crosscuts driven into, or counter to, the section airflow. Individual cuts are highlighted to demonstrate instances of minimal and excessive dust exposure attributable to particular mining configurations. These findings form the basis of recommendations for lowering face worker respirable dust exposures when performing a variety of continuous mining cuts.INTRODUCTION Underground continuous coal mining operations may encounter a wide range of conditions and arrangements during production and development activities. These activities typically produce respirable coal mine dust, putting operators of continuous mining machines and coal haulers at risk for elevated exposures. In order to comply with federal regulations limiting respirable dust exposures for the duration of a working shift, mine operators typically implement ventilation, water sprays, and machine-mounted flooded-bed dust collectors (scrubbers) to dilute and control mine dusts during coal cutting. Nevertheless, changes in operational conditions can limit the ability of these controls to effectively reduce dust exposures. Some examples of conditions that can change during the course of mining include face ventilation configuration, orientation of crosscuts mined in relation to the section ventilation, and operator positioning. Because these arrangements are largely under the control of mine operators, any insight into associated exposures may inform future plans and behaviors, reducing occupational exposures to respirable dust. The objective of this OMSHR study is to evaluate respirable dust exposures associated with a range of continuous mining arrangements by comparing occupational dust concentrations measured during a series of field surveys. "The adsorption of collector on chalcocite has been studied in situ in aqueous solutions by applying an atomic force microscopy (AFM). The AFM images show that xanthate, such as potassium ethyl xanthate (KEX) and potassium amyl xanthate (PAX), adsorbs strongly on chalcocite mainly in the form of insoluble metal xanthate, which binds strongly with the mineral surface without being removed by flushing with ethanol alcohol. The result clearly shows that the adsorption of xanthate on chalcocite is totally different from its adsorption on chalcopyrite, during which oily dixanthogen is the main adsorption product on chalcopyrite surface. AFM images also showed that increasing solution pH to 10 doesn’t prevent the adsorption of xanthate on chalcocite much and the result confirms with the fact that chalcocite floats well in a wide pH range up to 12 with xanthate being used as a collector. INTRODUCTION In flotation, the adsorption of collector on mineral surface is vital for a successful flotation process to achieve a satisfying metal recovery. Historically, many works have been carried out to clarify the adsorption mechanism of collectors on sulfides. (Gaudin and Schuhmann, 1936, Poling and Leja, 1963; Allison et al., 1972, Fuerstenau, 1982; Leja, 1982; Woods, 1984) The adsorption of xanthate on chalcocite surface in aqueous solution also attracted the interest of many researches. Gaudin and his colleagues (Gaudin et al., 1934; Gaudin and Schuhmann, 1936) studied the solubility of potassium ethyl xanthate and its reaction products in organic solvents and firstly proposed there was initially chemisorbed xanthate (X-) on chalcocite surface followed by insoluble cuprous xanthate (CuX). Allison et al. (1972) studied the reaction products of various sulfide minerals with xanthate solutions and reported that the measured rest potential of chalcocite in 6.25×10-4 M KEX solution at pH 7 was +60 mV and the reaction product of PAX on chalcocite was cuprous xanthate. Mielczarski and Suoninen (1984a, 1984b) applied the XPS and studied the adsorption of potassium ethyl xanthate on cuprous sulfide. It was reported that there was a relatively rapid formation of a well-oriented monolayer of xanthate ions followed by a slow growth of disordered cuprous xanthate molecules on top of this layer. Richardson et al. (1984) carried out an electrochemical study of chalcocite flotation with the addition of ethyl xanthate. It was proposed that cuprous xanthate and possibly cupric xanthate were adsorbed hydrophobic species on chalcocite surface due to the exchange and charge transfer oxidation reactions. Leppinen et al. (1989) applied an in-situ FTIR study of ethyl xanthate adsorption on sulfide minerals under conditions of controlled potential and they concluded that, for chalcocite, there were three different potential regions of xanthate adsorption, including chemisorption, copper ethyl xanthate formation on the surface and multilayer formation."

"In this paper, recent progress with respect to the flotation chemistry of soluble salt minerals is reviewed, and some of the more relevant issues including the hydration states of ions, the interfacial phenomena of salt surfaces and the flotation behavior of selected soluble salts are discussed. Due to the high solubility, the flotation of most soluble salts has to be carried out in their saturated brines. Anecdotal evidence has suggested that the hydration states of the ions have significant influence on the physicochemical properties of the solutions, the surface charge and wetting characteristics of the minerals, the collector adsorption states and, further, the flotation behavior of the soluble salts. In this regard, reviewing past research findings, efforts are made to establish a correlation between the ion hydration states with the flotation behavior of the soluble salts. Further, advances in understanding the significance of colloid adsorption involved in the soluble salt flotation process are addressed, and future research efforts to understand the soluble salt flotation chemistry are suggested.IntroductionSoluble salt minerals are essential raw materials for the production of a variety of commodities, fertilizers, potassium hydroxide, soda ash, magnesium compounds and other chemicals. "In making strategic economic decisions, it is important for a mining company to gain insights on the impact of significant political, social and economic issues when planning for present and future mines. The size of any mine, measured by the average number of employees working in the mine, will likely vary according to the pressures generated by the significant issues from one year to another. The objective of this study is to develop a model that represents U.S. underground coal mine size transitions during the period 2002-2012 using data derived from the MSHA databases. Coupled with information on significant issues over the past ten years, this model is used to gain insight on the impact of the issues on mine sizes. Results indicate that the structural impact of the combined driving pressures can be discerned by examining the year-to-year stability of mine-size categories. The effects of The MINER Act, the Obama Administration environmental policies on coal, and the coal market are evident. The lessons learned from these analyses give good insights on what the industry and market responses have been on the structure of the underground coal industry over the period of study. INTRODUCTION It is apparent that key driving issues affect the structure and viability of the coal industry. The driving issues may be political, social, and/or economic in the final analysis, but are generally rooted in reaction to dramatic and publicized events or movements. Mine disasters, an increase in miners’ disease prevalence, strife in the coal fields, and negative environmental impacts on air, land or water can capture the attention of the media and the public. Some of the issues occur over a long period of time, like the current global climate change movement. The coal industry veteran can sense the changes in political and social sentiment, and attempt to react to the economic repercussions; however, the insights from the media and from unique combinations of driving pressures are difficult to fathom. Thus decisions made on inadequate information related to the driving pressures and their likely impacts could lead to missteps in corporate and market restructuring. One way to gain some more insight on the potential impacts is to examine the complicated restructuring of mine operations in reaction to the driving pressures of the recent past. This paper examines an 11-year history of the changes in the underground coal industry structure, as reflected by changes in the numbers of mines in various statuses by mine-size categories. Superimposed on the results of mine-size changes is a mapping of the key driving pressures that occurred over the same period, 2002-2012. It is assumed that using this methodology, some important insights can be gained on the immediate and delayed responses to the driving pressures during that period."
