The event, billed as the world’s largest mining equipment exhibition, is set for Sept. 27-30at the Las Vegas Convention Center. MINExpo, sponsored by the National Mining Association (NMA), is held every four years in Las Vegas, NV. This year’s event is expected to attract more than 40,000 mining industry professionals and executives from around the world. And several key members of the U.S. Congress and other senior government officials are expected to attend. In addition, senior industry and government officials from Asia, Europe, Australia, Africa and South America will be on hand.

North of Antwerp central train station, two single-track tunnels for the high-speed train line between Brussels and Amsterdam were constructed. At the same time, the central train station was modified to a through station. Both 1.23 km tunnels are situated in the Antwerp sands and were constructed using a slurry shield machine. Due to the inner city location, the tunnels run over their entire length underneath structures, in some cases with only minimal clearance. The paper deals with these challenging situations. In addition, the tunnel boring machine, the tunnel lining and measures to limit settlements will be introduced.

INTRODUCTION The past decade has witnessed a literal explosion in formal modeling of energy systems and markets. This rapid development was stimulated primarily by policy issues arising from the energy price shocks of 1973- 1974 and 1979- 1980. The suddenness of this interest is illustrated by comparing the current and earlier editions of Mineral Economics. The third edition, published in 1976, includes an addendum to the section of projection and forecasting methods because, Since the foregoing chapter was written, major events in petroleum have caused an explosion in formal modeling efforts in the energy field.a In contrast, this fourth edition includes the present chapter on energy modeling, and a separate chapter on nonfuel minerals modeling. The considerable interest in formal energy models is based on the complexity of the system, in particular the interaction between technical and engineering data and designs, and economic behavior of energy producers and users. Energy is a vital component in the economic and social well-being of nations, and must increasingly be explicitly considered in developing economic growth and welfare policies. Energy models can contribute to policy development and analysis, both by improved understanding of the energy system, and of the interaction between energy markets and the economy, and as an explicit means of analyzing and comparing the implications of alternative policy actions. At their best, formal models can clarify and illuminate policy options. In this chapter we will survey the objectives, methods, and potential contributions and limitations of energy system modeling. Section 2 considers the objectives, scope, and approaches to energy system and market modeling. Methodological approaches are then discussed more formally in section 3. Our approach is to intro- duce each model type and method via relatively simple generic models, illustrating their use by a selective review of the applications literature. Section 4 shifts the focus from modeling methods to procedures for model evaluation and improving model credibility especially in policy research and analysis. We conclude with some brief remarks on directions and opportunities for future modeling research. ENERGY MODELS: OBJECTIVES, SCOPE AND APPROACHES The concept of a model usually evokes an image of a complex, computerized system of mathematical or econometric equations providing detailed information concerning the operation of the process being modeled. In fact. models may be simple or complex, formal or mental, depending upon the purposes for which the model is intended. This work studies the variations of the electric current caused by the application of an electric field on marble samples when they are subjected to continuously increasing mechanical stress at a constant rate up to fracture. The external electric field is applied in a direction perpendicular to the applied mechanical stress. An increase of the level of the electric current was observed when micro-damages started to occur in the samples. The increase of the electric current was approximately 14%. Consequently, the current started to decay abruptly and the sample failed. This electric current recording is compared with the corresponding electric recording without applying the external electric field (Pressure Stimulated Current technique). Both recordings show similar qualitative characteristics. The most obvious of these characteristics are that the electric current starts to develop when microcrack structures start to form due to the externally applied stress. Both recordings show a maximum in the vicinity of fracture.

"The Functional Performance Equation calculated from a plant grinding survey defines two distinct ball mill circuit efficiencies and how they relate to total production rate through the target grind size. The survey data are also used to calculate a complete ball mill size distribution model, represented by the energy specific grinding rates, not just through the target grind size, but through all the size classes. Cyclone separation performance is represented by individual size recoveries to underflow. When these two unit operation performances are entered into the circuit modelling program (Streamline™), along with the circuit feed rate and size distribution, all the circuit survey size distributions and mass flows are perfectly regenerated by the program. The many issues associated with the historical Epstein (breakage-selection) models are eliminated. Once the circuit program is populated, pump and cyclone performance changes can be evaluated using a step-by-step procedure in order to maximize Classification System Efficiency. Mill water use and media sizing opportunities are also diagnosed in order to maximize Mill Grinding Efficiency at the size of interest. An example is provided. This circuit analysis and modelling system, and related training, is provided through a web-based application. INTRODUCTION Since its development (McIvor, 1988), the Functional Performance Equation for ball milling has facilitated new understanding of industrial circuit cause and effect relationships, leading to significant strides in operational performance. Success stories of this refreshing approach to plant circuit performance improvement are now too numerous to list. Finch and McIvor (circa 1986) also discovered that the Functional Performance “Mill Grinding Rate” at the size of interest was the same cumulative grinding rate that is calculated from mill feed and discharge size distributions using a first-order rate equation. By calculating these cumulative grinding rates for all screen sizes, a complete ball mill model is generated (as used by Finch and Ramirez, 1981). Others in industry, Hinde and Kalala (2009), for example, have noted the same. Lacking the complexity needed to maintain their interest, most researchers have ignored this model, broadly opting instead for Epstein’s (1948) characterization of grinding as a chemical reaction, combining “selection rate” and “breakage size distribution” functions. The much simpler ball mill model presented here has previously been incorporated into a proprietary circuit modeling program (McIvor, 2005) and used for plant improvement work (for example, see McIvor and Finch, 2007, and McIvor, 2014). Now, by combining this extremely business-friendly ball mill model with optimization criteria from Functional Performance Analysis, a circuit modeling system (including the needed supplementary steps to assure successful plant implementation of circuit design changes) is at the disposal of every plant metallurgist, grinding equipment/material provider, and circuit designer."

Cyanidation processes for the extraction of gold or silver frequently involve the processing of sulfurcontaining solids that react with cyanide to form thiocyanate. The formation of thiocyanate is an undesired side reaction, and in many cases thiocyanate formation results in a prohibitively high cyanide consumption. With the increasing number of gold and silver mining projects that involve the processing of sulfide ores or concentrates or that utilize a biological sulfur oxidation process, more attention is being focused on minimizing thiocyanate formation and in treating solutions to eliminate toxicity associated with thiocyanate. Though not yet commercially applied, there are several processes available to recover cyanide from thiocyanate to reduce tailings toxicity and to allow the reuse of cyanide otherwise lost to thiocyanate formation. This paper presents an overview of processes available for recovering cyanide from thiocyanate along with estimated operating costs for the processes. Pilot testing data suggests that in some cases cyanide can be recovered from thiocyanate for approximately the same cost as newly purchased cyanide.

Rapid excavation includes rapid support and is the central theme of this paper. Over the last few years, enormous strides forward have been made in the excavation and material handling aspects of underground excavation. However, the technology necessary to support these rapidly created openings has lagged behind the other aspects. This paper would attempt to bring you up-to-date on the progress made in bringing ground support using shotcrete into the same productivity rates as the other cyclic operations. Shotcrete has become an acceptable material for temporary and permanent support for undergound openings. However, coarse aggregate shotcrete has been an expensive construction material. It has been confined in the main to difficult ground conditions where conventional methods of support have proved to be even slower and more expensive than shotcrete. There are two main factors influencing the productivity of shotcrete equipment. (1) Structural shotcrete as opposed to gunite requires 40% to 45% rock minus 3/4" in the mix design. Introduction The term kaolin is derived from kauling, a Chinese word meaning high ridge. This was the name of a hill in China where kaolin was first mined several hundred years ago (Murray, 1976). Other common names used for kaolin include clay and China Clay. Clay technically has a broader meaning and could refer to bentonite and ball clay as well as kaolin. China clay, as a descriptive term, apparently results from kaolin's origin. But it could also be due to a significant historical use in ceramic applications. The terms kaolin and clay will be used interchangeably in this analysis because of the common practice of using these terms in the paper industry. Major reasons for kaolin's wide-spread industrial usages center on kaolinite's physical features of good color, low viscosity, and inertness. Kaolin is described as a hydrous aluminum silicate with an approximate composition of 2H2O • A12O3 . 2SiO2. A new version of the product is calcined clay with modified hydration content. It is gaining widespread use. Components of any particular kaolin, in addition to alumina and silica, are viewed as impurities. The more values deposits and, hence, higher priced kaolin products are those of the highest purity. Kaolin is the most widely used mineral in paper manufacturing throughout the world. Key production centers are located in England and the US. Most of the Tatter's production is located in Georgia. The key markets for Georgia kaolin are paper markets - both paper coating and paper filling. These paper markets extend throughout the world, not just to domestic markets. In fact, export markets are second in size only to domestic paper markets for Georgia's producers of kaolin. Just as the paper markets are important for kaolin producers, kaolin is an important raw material for papermakers. Compared to the other three major pigments - titanium dioxide, calcium carbonate, and talc - kaolin's 1984 tonnage for papermaking represented 85% of the total. Even though titanium dioxide's unit value is much higher, kaolin's estimated total 1984 value still represented 51% of total dollars spent by papermakers for the four pigments. Kaolin grades- are briefly defined using particle size and brightness as principal means of classification. Likewise, grades of papers using kaolin are defined using the American Paper Institute's guidelines. From these definitions, associated kaolin grades used in particular grades of paper are reviewed. Special emphasis is placed on how qualities desired in certain papers are achieved through the use of specialized kaolin grades. World kaolin production World production statistics (Coope, 1979; Table 1) demonstrate that kaolin is produced in many areas of the world. In the mining industry, conversion of fine particles into a slurry is often part of the normal processing of the ore. Therefore. from a system's point of view, slurry transportation would be considered as a natural alternative, all the way from the working face to the final processing. In underground mines, there is sometimes a considerable inflow of ground water that has to be pumped out. When the mine dewatering installations are integrated with a hydraulic hoisting system, the cost of power needed to pump out the ground water can be excluded from the cost of hoisting, compared with other modes of transporting the solids to the surface. The chief advantage of hydraulic hoisting is that the hoisting capacity can be increased at comparatively low total cost without necessitating the sinking of new shafts. Alternative examples include deepening of the existing mechanical hoisting system, truck, or conveyor belts transport in ramps to the present level. These often become very expensive. The economic effectiveness of hydraulic hoisting and hydraulic design considerations have been discussed by Kostuik (1965) and Sellgren (1985, 1986) for both small shallow mines and large deep underground mines. Objective and scope The objective of this study was to demonstrate the feasibiliy of hydraulic hoisting in hypothetical examples of mine deepening. Underground grinding to a maximum particle size of about 700 um (about 25 mesh) is considered. The pumping of ground ore products with positive displacement plunger or membrane type of pumps at working pressures of up to 15 MPa (2200 psi) is a thoroughly tested technique (Venton, 1986). Hydraulic hoisting system A hydraulic hoisting system is described schematically in Fig. 1. The ore is mined, handled, and crushed conventionally. It is then ground wet underground. The slurry is then temporarily stored in an agitated tank and pumped to an agitated receiving tank on the surface. The ore is then further processed in the concentrator. The capacity of a pipeline is very high. For example, an annual production of 500 Kt (550,000 st) of ore can be handled in a 100-mm-diam (4-in.-diam) pipeline. Systems layout - economic effectiveness Schematic mine layouts are presented that represent situations where hydraulic hoisting often is the most economical alternative. A situation where the ore is trucked to the level of the existing hoisting system is shown in Fig. 2 (following page). With hydraulic hoisting, only a shaft for ventilation, pipe- line, and personnel are needed. In a first phase (Fig. 2). a hydraulic hoisting installation with crushing and grinding units, storage facilities, and pumps has been located at a level of about 400 to 600 m (1310 to 1970 ft) below the surface. "The second prime area within the Interoceanmetal Joint Organization exploration area named H22 was delineated in 2013 with the goal to ensure sufficient nodule reserves for profitable mining operations and processing.The knowledge base for area H22 has been obtained from archive materials. The geological situation can be characterized as follows: the sea bottom is represented by tectonic blocks oriented in a sub-meridional direction. According to swath mapping, the depressions (troughs) are contoured at depths of 4500-4600 m while the tops of horsts occur at 4300-4350 m. Volcanic relief occupies 6% of the H22 area; in the eastern part a multicone volcano was detected. Its area at the base is 153 km2. The maximum height of a cone above the base is 850 m. The crystalline basement composed by tholeiitic basalts of late Oligocene age is covered by about 100 m of sediments. Semi-consolidated to consolidated calcareous nanofossil sediments of the Marquesas formation are deposited on the basement. Higher up in the profile sediments of the Clipperton formation occur. They are represented by unconsolidated siliceous (Radiolaria, Diatom) ooze. Sediments containing calcium carbonate have not been detected. Where opaline silica (or CaCO3 if any) content is below 5%, the sediments belong to zeolitic clays or red pelagic clays. Grain size composition of the seabed and the near-seabed sediments in H22 classifies them into clayey silts."

This article deals with the extensive geotechnical soil and bedrock mapping system maintained in the Geotechnical Office of the City of Helsinki since 1955.Soil maps have been prepared to scales of 1:500,1:2000 and 1:10 000, and most recently in 1978 a new type of bedrock map was printed to a scale of 1:10 000, which covers the whole city area and particularly serves rock tunnel construction. A map showing the types of foundation building in the central city area, which will also serve underground construction activities, is currently being prepared. Since the geotechnical mapping system has been well received in Helsinki and the drawing of similar maps has also been undertaken in other Finnish towns, this mapping method is believed to be of interest to foundation engineers and tunnel constructors elsewhere too. THE GEOTECHNICAL CONDITIONS IN HELSINKI The geological structure of Helsinki, and of all Finland, presents two types clearly differing in character and age; bedrock and soil. The solid bedrock is Precambrian, while the soil dates from the Pleistocene Age and has mainly been deposited during and after the Ice Age. Thus the history of Helsinki only displays very old and very young formations, but nothing in between. The ground level in Helsinki is +62 at its highest and the sea bottom close to shore is -15 at its deepest. The deepest rockhead has been found to lie at the -70 level.

We will first review the situation historically and then examine the problems and constraints that are now making the financing task more difficult. Suggested solutions are discussed, and a new method of financing a group of mining projects is hypothesized.

Cyclones have become standard unit operations in mineral processing for both dewatering mineral slurries and for making separations at given particle sizes. Conventional cyclones are normally able to make moderately sharp cuts. However, the limited ability to control water flow out of the apex means that cyclones have difficulty handling fluctuations in feed. Underflow-regulated cyclones are cyclones with a rubber boot attached to the underflow. This boot acts as a non-return valve and restricts flow out of the apex of a cyclone. Normally, this type of restriction on a cyclone causes severe difficulties in cyclone operation. However, by adding a siphon arm to the overflow, water flow can be controlled. The siphon arm creates a vacuum that reduces or eliminates the air core, permitting better control of the ratio of water flow out of the overflow and underflow. A Linatex-developed underflow-regulated cyclone was compared to a conventional cyclone for its ability to dewater a sand slurry. The underflow-regulated cyclone produced slurries with solids contents as high as 80% in the underflow. Conventional cyclones produced lower solids content in the underflow under similar conditions.

Even though the mining industry in 1966 produced more ore than ever before, current extraction rates are only a fraction of what is expected in the later years of the twentieth century. Nearly 90% of all metals and-mineral products consumed last year was recovered by open-pit mining. This has placed great pressure on this segment of the industry which has, consequently, resulted in some spectacular developments. With increasing size of projects, the need for increased sophistication of engineering, planning, management and administration of modern mining installations has never become more apparent. The design of complete systems for the mine and plant that fit the mould of today's business and social environments is undergoing an evolutionary process. Traditional concepts in mine development and operations are being sidestepped in favor of new ideas and principles. As the overburden thickness increases, materials handling presents a major problem to mining companies, especially those concerned with the mass production of ore and waste from low-grade deposits. The profit margin here is likely to be significantly less as to take chances with capital investment. 1 Constant efforts are needed to improve upon productivity if the ore is to be economically mined.

Uranium tailings at Cotter Corporation's Canon City, Colorado Mill were moved to a double-lined impoundment, but uranium and molybdenum salts remaining in the fractured bedrock underlying the old tailings ponds seeped into groundwater. Fluor Daniel GTI recommended an in situ geochemical fixation remedy, flushing Best Sulfur Products' calcium polysulfide reductant into the subsurface with clean water. Residual metals became immobile, trapped in the bedrock. Fluor Daniel GTI designed and implemented the process on ten acres with high metal concentrations. Cotter is operating and monitoring the system, which can be expanded to "hot spots." The original remediation time was estimated at less than five years.

The construction involved in the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), Contract No. lK0011 (K-1), encompassed some 2,621 meters of single track parallel tube rapid transit tunnels, 335 meters of cut-cover subway station and appurtenant ventilation structures at each end, and a fan shaft at approximately the mid point of the tunnels. The construction contract was awarded June 7, 1974 to a Joint Venture consisting of Intercounty Construction Corporation, Hyattsville, Maryland, and S $ M Constructors, Inc., Solon, Ohio. The former being responsible for performing the cut and cover construction, and the latter being charged with constructing the running tunnels and fan shaft at their mid point. (See Fig. 1) The problems of mining and supporting, the 183 meters of twin tunnels just east of Court House Square Station, by unique mixed face and soft ground mining methods is the main subject of this report, although a general review of the tunnels in their entirety, as well as the geology encountered in the excavations, is presented to give a better overall setting for the problems encountered. Modern coal cleaning technologies have allowed coal preparation facilities to become quite efficient at removing sulfur compounds, waste rock and low grade coals from run of mine coal. Up to 50% of the raw mined coal stream may end up as refuse, particularly when the coal originates from longwall mining operations, or is high in partings, rock and impurities. The refuse materials vary from coarse materials removed by physical screening to very fine materials removed by floatation and density separation processes. Coal refuse piles are also known by a variety of other names including "waste dumps", "gob piles" and "slate dumps". The potential hazards of improperly reclaimed refuse include contamination of surface and groundwaters by acidic leachates and runoff, erosion and sedimentation into nearby watersheds, spontaneous combustion, disturbance of topsoil borrow areas, and damage from landslides should large slope failures occur. Many of these problems have been particularly acute for abandoned refuse piles, and modern regulations attempt to minimize the environmental impact of coal refuse disposal operations.

This paper shows how the efficiencies of size-reduction processes depend on the mode of particle constraint and energy transfer within the comminution device: namely, whether the process consists of single-particle loading, confined-particle-bed comminution or loose- (unconstrained-) particle grinding. The relative efficiency of single-particle comminution, ball-mill grinding and particle-bed comminution in the recently invented high-pressure roll mill is evaluated by making use of the self-preserving nature of the size distributions of comminuted products. The highest energy efficiency can be achieved by utilizing a hybrid two-stage system in which the material is first ground in the high-pressure roll mill and then the ball mill.

Underground mining has the potential to be one of the more dangerous industries in the United States and the world. Following recent disasters in Sago, WV; Darby, KY, and Crandall Canyon, UT, the mining industry was reminded of the need for a system to allow trapped miners awaiting rescue to survive following a disaster. To address this need, Battelle has developed a Mine Barrier Survival System (MBSS) that surpasses all current technologies and sets a new standard for keeping miners alive in the event of a fire, flood, explosion or collapse. The MBSS creates a temporary refuge for miners who cannot escape by using inflatable barriers and a post-fire atmosphere scrubbing system to define the ?safe haven? and remove CO2 and CO while replacing oxygen and providing heat. Current personal-protective systems in use are designed to provide breathing air for only a few hours when, realistically, it may take days for rescue teams to reach trapped miners. Battelle?s MBSS is designed to aid up to 15 miners for four days.

The Henderson mine site is located at Red Mountain on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains, approximately 50 miles west of Denver, Colorado. The mill site is on the west slope of the Rockies and mine and mill will be connected by an underground railroad. All designs were for a 30,000 ton per day molybdenite processing plant with provisions for future expansion up to 50,000 ton per day if required. This plan did not just happen, but slowly evolved over the course of about three and one-half years. Many plants cannot afford such a delay, but the Henderson project will take about 10 years from the time it was first discovered until production starts, and these 3 !1 years were well spent in determining the best possible plant site and flowsheet. This paper describes some of the problems and the decisions made in arriving at the final location and flowsheet. The paper does not go into the specific details of how protection of the environment went hand-in-hand with all other project considerations. This particular aspect of the planning has been well-reported on other occasions and considerable information on it is readily available.
