Sonora Mining Corporation (SMC) operates the 6,000 tonne per day Jamestown open pit gold mine in the Mother Lode district of California. The mine has been in operation since January, 1987, and has produced approximately 7,800 kilograms of gold since start-up. The property consists of five ore bodies lying along a five kilometer stretch of the famous Mother Lode vein system. At present, only the Harvard ore body is being mined. The Harvard pit is centered around a historic underground mine of the same name that was operated from 1896 to 1916. The present ore body averages 2.5 grams gold per tonne as free milling gold and auriferous pyrite. The project consists of the open pit mine and concentrator complex in Tuolumne County, California, and a carbon-in-pulp leach plant located near Yerington, Nevada.

Introduction Metallurgical accounting practices have been revolutionized over the past 15 years by the introduction of low cost personal computers and easy- to-use spreadsheet software. The Chimney Creek metallurgical accounting system takes full advantage of these advances. Data is provided by a PLC-based process control system, IBM data logging, operator logsheets and assay results from an automatatic plant sampling system. The data is organized and stored in an IBM PS/2 system using Lotus 123 and customized accounting programs to provide a comprehensive information management system. Metallurgical accounting for gold plants should ideally provide information for the following: a) Gold production accounting b) Day-to-day process control and operation c) Metallurgical evaluation and process optimization The Chimney Creek system provides all of these while overcoming specific accounting problems presented by SAG milling a coarse feed, grinding in cyanide and dump leaching run-of-mine material. Process description Gold Fields' Chimney Creek mine is located 47 miles northeast of Winnemucca, Nevada, at the northern end of the Osgood Mountains. Ore is processed by a combination of dump leaching and milling processes. The dump leach operation treats approximately 2.0 million tons per year of low grade ore (0.030 oz/ton). Run-of-mine ore is top dumped in 40 foot high pads. The use of three solution ponds for leaching enables an intermediate solution to be recirculated to the leach pad to reduce the pregnant solution flowrate and increase gold tenor of solution to the carbon-in-column (CIC) recovery circuit. Gold recovery is approximately 65% by this method. The milling process employs a SAG mill-ball mill grinding circuit to treat 900,000 tons per year at an average grade of 0.19 oz/ton. The ore is crushed to minus 12" in a jaw crusher prior to feeding the SAG mill. Cyanide is added to the grinding circuit to start gold dissolution as early as possible. After grinding, leaching of the ore is continued in a unique two-stage counter current decantation circuit 1 with 12 hours of leaching between stages . 85% of the soluble gold is recovered from the first stage thickener overflow in carbon columns (CIC). The second stage underflow is treated in a scavenger carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant. Ultimate gold recovery is over 95%. Loaded carbon from both the dump leaching and milling processes is pressure stripped by hot cyanide solution and gold is recovered from the resulting solution by zinc precipitation. The precipitate is retorted for mercury removal and smelted into bullion. The plant flowsheet appears in Figure 1. Data collection Data for daily metallurgical accounting is obtained from three sources: a) Plant sampling b) Process control system c) Operator logsheets All of the data collection for metallurgical accounting is based around the 12-hour shift operating schedule. Sampling All critical sampling for gold production accounting is performed by automatic samplers (Figure 2). Heath & Sherwood two-stage sampling systems are used for sampling all slurry streams (cyclone overflow, CIP feed and CIP tails). The automatic sampler consists of a pneumatically operated primary sample cutter and a continuous rotary secondary splitter. The cyclone overflow and CIP tails are the most critical samples since these are used to calculate gold into and out of the plant on a shiftly basis. For more than 35 years Lurgi has been providing its fluid bed roasters on a world­wide basis. The current total annual capaci­ty of the 250 Lurgi roasters approaches 26 million mt of sulphide minerals, including gold-bearing flotation pyrite concentrates. While the stationary fluid bed has been uti­lized for roasting exclusively, Lurgi has now commercially introduced its Circulating Fluid Bed (CFB) technology for gold roasting in a successful effort to maximize gold re­covery.

The fluidized bed was invented by Fritz Winkler of Germany in 1921. The first application in the U.S. was in the development of the fluidized bed catalytic cracking of petroleum in 1942. Today, fluid bed cracking reactors are an integral part of every oil refinery. When fluid bed technology was first considered for applications outside the petroleum industry it was recognized to have uniform temperature, close control of the gaseous atmosphere and excellent mixing between solids and gases. Roasting of sulfide ores and concentrates was an obvious match. The first application was a single stage roaster for gold refining in 1947. There have been over four hundred commercial fluid bed roasters built and operated successfully in the four decades since the fluid bed was invented. There are three general categories of roasting applications. The largest number of roasters fall into the dead roasting category which includes gold ore roasters. The other categories are sulfating roasters and partial roasters (Reference 1).

Introduction Asamera Minerals (US) Inc. and its joint venture partner, Breakwater Resources Ltd., discovered ore grade gold mineralization on their 20 km2 (5000 acre) Wenatchee, WA land position in February 1983. Due to the high grade nature of the discovery ore and the known reserves of ore in the "B Reef' and "B West" zones previously outlined by other companies, a decision was made to construct a mine/mill operation near the known ore occurrences. Further drilling in the discovery area quickly expanded known gold occurrences to more than 3.6 Mt (4 million st) with tentative in-place ore grade of 7 g/t (0.25 oz per st) and minor silver values. Based on existing knowledge of the ore body and the rapidly increasing ore reserve, a decision to build a 1.8-kt/d (2000-stpd) mine and mill complex was made in the second quarter of 1983. A schedule was devised to begin immediate mine development, shaft sinking, environmental and land use permitting, and mill and tailings dam construction (Fig. 1). Meeting the scheduled startup date, April 1, 1985, required a fast track schedule in all areas. To this end, Asamera purchased the Oracle Ridge Partners concentrator. This was an assemblage of new equipment designed for use as a copper concentrator in southern Arizona. The purchase contained all of the major mineral dressing equipment - crushers, screens, rod and ball mills, etc. and an engineering package. It did not include most of the other required items, such as buildings, conveyors, pipelines, tanks, and pumps. At the same time, core samples were sent to two independent process development laboratories for initial flowsheet development. Due to the refractory nature of the carbonaceous ore, cyanide leaching was not feasible. Flotation was selected as the concentration process. Further testing showed that autoclaving of the flotation concentrate followed by cyanidation would result in overall recovery of about 85% gold. A mine manager was hired to begin assembling an operations staff, hire an environmental consulting firm, and begin mine development. Environmental and land use concerns were major obstacles due to the mine's close proximity to a city of 20,000 people. These concerns had to be rapidly defined so as to mitigate any adverse impacts from and mining processing operations. Baseline data dealing with weather, air and water quality, and sound were measured before start of mine construction. Concentrator and flowsheet development remained static until October 1983 while definition drilling and mine development proceeded. In late October, a process engineer was hired to coordinate development of a process flowsheet, purchase the remainder of the concentrator equipment, prepare a concentrator construction contract, finalize concentrator detail engineering, and combine environmental and process requirements with a tailings dam design. Process development There were only 17 months remaining to mill start up from the hiring date of the process engineer. Therefore, the process flowsheet had to be finalized rapidly. To accomplish this, samples of drill core from the highest grade (and therefore potentially the most commercial) ore zones were sent to an outside metallurgical laboratory to confirm beneficiation tests on the flotation process. Test results again showed that flotation would provide about an 86% gold recovery. Therefore, all further testing was concentrated on flotation and autoclave/cyanidation of flotation concentrates. Focusing on a well known process such as flotation was important in accomplishing the rapid design and construction of the concentrator. If, during these next phases, we were continually changing design concepts, layout, and process flow, the mill startup would have been delayed many months. Once a process flowsheet is selected the process engineer must obtain the process criteria needed to design the beneficiation system. For example, it was known in early December that the Oracle Ridge rod and ball mills were too small to grind 1.8 kt/d (2000 stpd) of Wenatchee ore. A decision had to be made to purchase a large, used ball mill and convert the Oracle Ridge ball mill to a rod mill. The process engineer must be cognizant of the process criteria needed to size and select equipment. If not, the process engineer must use the professional services of the equipment manufacturing companies to review the requirements that the equipment is asked to perform. For the Wenatchee system, this resulted in the adaptation of a ball mill to a rod mill with a weight limit of grinding rods to protect the mill bearings and drive trains. When a decision is required, the process engineer has to present the facts and options in a manner that allows a rapid decision. This information must include costs, equipment availability, and effect on the construction schedule. At the Cannon mine, there were process development details that resulted in decisions similar to the ball mill purchase. These included an increased flotation residence time from eight to 25 minutes, an increased thickener area requirement, a high pressure tailings pumping system, and area constraints in plant layout. All of these decisions had to be timely and required assistance from manufacturers' service engineers, and knowledge of the alternate costs and effects on construction completion. H. P. Ferri I refer to the article "Degradation Process in Coal Slurry Pipelines" by M.G. Ayat and B.C. Scott in the September 1988 issue of Mining Engineering. I would like to congratulate Dr. Ayat and his colleague on a very interesting and valuable piece of work. This article is an excellent one, describing a real phenomenon that has been ignored for so long. I do, however, have an objection. The article fails to address the degradation process when coal is processed or transported in other ways than slurry form, particularly those employed in this work. Could, for example, screening (wet or dry) have contributed to the extent of degradation? Perhaps scanning electron micrographs of the samples examined and after screening would have helped to clarify this. I would like to point out that degradation is also observed in pneumatic conveying systems, mechanical conveying, and other means of transportations employed by the mineral industry. Reply by M. G. Ayat We gratefully acknowledge Dr. Fern's comments on the subject paper. As he so rightly points out, the degradation process is a real problem, not only in coal slurry pipelines, but also in many handling and processing equipment employed by the coal and mineral industry. Scanning Electron Microscopic examination of samples may offer very little information about the extent of degradation for several reasons. One is that preparing a representative sample that has undergone degradation will be extremely difficult if not impossible. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that SEM requires only very small amounts of material for testing. Secondly, there is a sample preparation step involved in the SEM examination and, as such, it would be very difficult to associate the extent of degradation to either sample preparation or handling and processing operations. Finally, it is probably worth mentioning that degradation is a multi-faceted phenomenon involving many natural and man-made factors. The logical approach to this problem would, therefore, seem to be a "one-step-at-a-time" approach.

In three recent publications, Klimpel et al (1988) and Klimpel and Hansen (1988, 89), the theory and invention process behind the identification of two new classes of sulfide mineral collectors were summarized. These two new families can be represented by the 111 generalized formulate: R1-S-R1 -NRI III (denoted as the F-series chelation family) and R-S-R or R -CHSCH-R (denoted as the S-series redox family). The influence of systematic changes in the various R groupings on laboratory batch flotation cell tests has been covered in the above references and will not be repeated in this paper. In particular, the recent article by Klimpel and Hansen (1989) should be studied as a research introduction to this paper.

Exploration programs for mineral resources often involve analysis of soils or stream sediments for the mineral being sought or its pathfinders. Because many metals are toxic to microorganisms, patterns of metal resistance in soil or aquatic populations may provide additional useful information at a reasonable coat. These patterns in some cases have been more effective than the soil geo-chemistry and may be easier to obtain. Elevated levels of resistance to silver and its path-finders have been demonstrated in stream populations from an area of known silver deposits, and resistance to gold pathfinders has been demonstrated for gold-bearing areas. Uranium has also been located by this method.

Prior to January, 1986, the city of Austin, Texas was on notice by the Federal Government's Environmental Protection Agency and the Texas Water Commission, that they were illegally polluting the Colorado River. The wastewater facilities presently in use in South Austin were inadequate to handle the vastly increasing population. The city of Austin, Texas hired Parsons Brinckerhoff Quade and Douglas, Inc. and Dannenbaum Engineering Corporation to design and supervise the construction of an update to their existing system to alleviate this problem. A major criterion handed down to the Designer and Contractor was that the system had to be completed within a two year time frame. The biggest link to the entire design was a tunnel project consisting of 43,000 linear feet (13,106 m) of tunnel, eight feet (2.44 m) in diameter with connecting structures tying into existing and future facilities. The project was awarded to S. A. Healy Construction Company of McCook, Illinois with a low bid of $24,755,000.00. This article summarizes the techniques used in the construction of this tunnel project.

A review of the literature reveals that methods for simulating the coupled behavior of size reduction and liberation are limited to binary mineral systems containing one composite particle class. The aim of this paper is to describe the development of a mathematical model to simulate such behavior for binary and ternary systems containing multiple classes of composite particles. A modified Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm and a finite difference Jacobian are used in conjunction with the developed model and a set of constrained equations to estimate all kinetic parameters. This estimation scheme is validated for a binary ore (sphalerite-dolomite) with five composite particle classes using experimental data.

The goal of most in-plant studies is to identify factors that limit overall plant performance. A major finding from such studies is that interactions between unit operations are always important, usually specific for a particular ore and plant combination, and are one of the limits to plant performance. Computer simulation based on process models developed from in-plant studies is a useful tool for identifying limits to performance and for estimating the effects of proposed changes at both pilot and industrial plant scales. Examples involving interactions between comminution and various separation and agglomeration processes are presented, and directions for future development discussed.

Many gold ores have copper mineralisation which presents problems in a carbon-in-pulp operation. Various types of copper-gold ores and ways of tackling the problem are discussed. In some cases copper and gold can be upgraded to a concentrate by flotation; otherwise, copper or gold can be selectively leached. When both copper and gold cyanide are present in solution, it is possible to minimise copper loading onto carbon or to selectively strip the copper from the carbon. Alternative leach solutions like thiourea and bromine are discussed and results obtained with the ammonia/cyanide system are presented in the light of our present understanding of the chemistry involved.

This paper describes the results from computer runs simulating 24 different mine ventilation configurations with the main fan situated first at the top of the upcast shaft and then at the top of the downcast shaft. Real air was used, with evaporation, condensation and heat exchange. The results showed that power requirements for the forcing fan were up to 20% less than for the exhausting fan for equal mass flow rates.

Three principal activities are involved in planning and developing a surface mine. These are 1) definition of economic and technical feasibility, 2) design, procurement and construction, and 3) mining and reclamation. The last is the only activity which begins in the feasibility study and continues throughout the life of a mine. It is also the activity which depends heavily on use of computers. This paper deals with a method of selecting mining software and dwells on the recent progress, made in this area. Discussed also is the status of computerized equipment management and information systems: a microprocessor based technology applied to dispatch systems, monitoring of equipment health and performance, wireless data transmission to a centralized data processing unit, and mine- wide information and reporting system. Reference has been made to upcoming developments which offer the potential- of transforming the surface mine of the year 2000 into a "manless pit". Canadian achievements in all of these areas have been highlighted at appropriate places in the text.

The mining industry, in particular the coal industry, has experienced the implementation of some major environmental regulatory programs during the past two decades. Over the coming decade the coal industry will probably experience only "fine tuning" of the regulatory programs they now operate under. The rest of the indus- try, however, appears to be on the verge of coming under a major new regulatory effort by the Environmental Protection Agency. Litigation and resulting court decisions will be the main force driving further changes in the SHCRA (Surface Mine Control and Reclamation Act) regulatory program. These changes are anticipated to be minor in compar- ison to earlier changes. EPA, however, is preparing a regulatory program which may carry as much impact to the rest of the mining industry as SNRA was to coal. Details of this program have yet to be worked out. Changes in the way EPAts Clean Air Program is applied to mining could also significantly impact the mining industry.

The year 1988 for the minerals indus¬try was one of favorable worldwide economic conditions for continued, rationally constrained growth. There was continued improvement in relations between market economy nations and the Soviet Union and China. The "shooting war" between Iran and Iraq ended. Soviet troops withdrew from Afghanistan. And conditions were generally favorable for economic growth in developed market economy countries. These favorable conditions were darkened only somewhat by the continuing foreign debt crises discernible in some major mineral producing developing market economy countries. However, there were situations developing that became major headlines in the late spring - situations that may have pronounced effects in 1989. The most significant event is the muddled situation in China. There is a good chance of worsening international relations and consequent restraint of development projects that could prove beneficial to China and her international partners. Of only slightly lesser evident significance was the death of Ruhollah Khomeini in Iran. This could lead to a variety of paths for the new Iranian leaders. Continued outbreaks of ethnic unrest in the Soviet Union clearly presented problems to the Gorbachev regime. This unrest has raised questions of how far the doctrines of "glasnost" and "peristroika" would be extended, including extensions into the minerals field. Another area of unrest is Panama with its tainted election and the Western Hemisphere's obvious dissatisfaction with the Noreiga regime. While not a direct threat to any major mineral industry enterprise, the political situation certainly presents a potential threat to the Panama Canal. The market prices received by producers of internationally traded commodity metals have been, and continue to be remarkably volatile and unpredictable compared with most other traded goods and services. This volatility results in an erratic financial performance on the part of producing companies, disruptive and often inflationary cost changes for consumers, unreliable tax revenues and export earnings for host governments and severe social and economic pressures on local, sometimes remote, communities which are dependent on the activity in question. Generally speaking, price volatility appears to be associated with the inability of the metal producing side of the industry to regulate the volume of supply in a manner that is consistent with metal demand, which in turn reflects broad macroeconomic and industrial developments around the world. This statement does not purport to apply to all metals or to all instances of volatility of course. Price movements may occur as a result of pure speculation or even illegal manipulation of the commodity markets. Embargoes, boycotts and other politically induced supply changes may contribute. Threatened or actual strikes also cause artificial swings in sales volumes and prices. How- ever, most of these developments are of a short-term nature. Yet metals price cycles may last for several years, as demonstrated by the extended copper price trough from 1981 to 1986. This paper deals with price volatility which reflects long-term economic cycles and the adaptive processes that exist within the industry in response to such cycles. Special emphasis is placed on the role of forecasts and forecasters in these processes. It should be said at the outset that this reflects the personal experience of one forecaster working in private sector commercial consulting practices that are independent of producers, consumers and host governments. However, the experience does cover the entire period since 1973 and has involved working with a substantial majority of the major companies that supply high volume commodity metals. By way of background it should be stated that the post-1973 world economy has provided a challenging environment for forecasters. One cannot be precise about the forecasting record of either industry insiders or outside consultants, financial analysts and academic forecasters because comprehensive records have not been kept, or if they have the results are too embarrassing to be published. Institutions such as the World Bank have published forecasts of the prices of major commodities on a regular basis and these have, presumably, had some influence on financing decisions in the industry. This record along with our own experience and numerous discussions with metal producers, major consumers and host governments permits certain generalizations to be made. The most important of these is that during the early 1980s. from about 1980 through 1985/6, the forecasters system- atically and substantially over- estimated metal prices. While some fore- casters did correctly anticipate a recession in the early 1980s and some consequential decline in prices, the magnitude and duration of the decline was far greater than anyone foresaw. This systematic forecasting "failure" appears to have occurred independently of the forecasting methodology employed. Moreover, its extent cannot be explained by obvious factors such as incorrect macroeconomic assumptions.
