During 1964 and 1965 a mineral exploration program was carried out over an area of approximately 250 square miles, located in the Anvil-Vangorda Creek area of east central Yukon, 125 miles northwest of Whitehorse. The Vangorda deposit, a massive lead-zinc sulphide body discovered in 1953, was centred in the area proposed for exploration, a northwest trending belt located between the southwestern flank of the Anvil Range and Pelly River. Exploration for base metals in the remote Anvil area had previously been restricted by poor metal markets in the late 1950's. Regional geologic information was also limited except for publication of a scale 1 inch to 4 mile map by the Geological Survey of Canada in 1961. To effectively explore this area, a combination of geophysical and geochemical methods were essential due to extensive overburden cover varying in depth from a few feet to over 300 feet. (Figure (i) Key Map) Dynasty Explorations initiated the first comprehensive regional exploration program in the Anvil area, utilizing saturation prospecting methods employing geologic, geochemical and geophysical methods. The program involved an approach demanding continual modification of technical and physical logistics. After a total of 12 months of field work involving an expenditure of approximately $450,00, massive sulphides were discovered which subsequently proved to be an economic orebody. Thirteen properties had been acquired and explored. Ten separate geophysical anomalies had been outlined by a combination of magnetic, electric and gravimetric survey techniques of which five were tested by rotary drilling and two by diamond core drilling. The discovery of the Faro deposit was a direct result of this program.

The Mineral Resource Exploration Company - CPRM - a part-private, part-government concern jurisdictioned to the Ministry of Mines and Energy of Brazil, was founded in 1969 for the purpose of promoting the exploration of mineral and hydric resources throughout Brazil. The political-administrative framework within which it was conceived and created considering that an economic and financial balance to be maintained in all its fields of activity, CPRM set out right from the start to organize itself to perform -three basic lines of action, which can be summarized as follows: As a Service Company, to carry out those services requested by government agencies and by the private sector through of service contracts; As a Mining Company under the Brazilian Mining Code, aiming at supplementing private initiative, not beyond the field of mineral exploration;

A combination field and office study of mining districts in Southwestern U.S.A., conducted in 1949 - 1950 by United Geophysical Company, embraced all of the essentials for a successful exploration project including factors such as geology water, transportation and many more. Perhaps the best known of several high priority areas chosen from the study was the Twin Buttes or Pima District in Arizona, however, the Turquoise District also ranked very high on this priority schedule. Following the discovery of the Pima Mine in 1951 and 1952, United initiated additional preliminary geological, geophysical, drilling and claim location work in the Turquoise District, but stopped shortly thereafter, when ASARCO began adjoining competetive activity. During the summer of 1957, sometime after ASARCO abandoned their claims in the area, Minerals Exploration Company began intensive exploration in the Courtland-Gleeson part of the District. This program was terminated in 1958. Later Bear Creek Mining Company supplemented the discovery endeavor with their own program during the period 1960 through 1962. This paper summarizes most of the geophysical work done by all of the groups except ASARCO and is intended to complement the recent paper "General Geology and Some Structural Features of the Courtland-Gleeson Area, Cochise County, Arizona" by Mr. Otis McRae of Bear Creek Mining Company.

INTRODUCTION In late 1970, an experimental geophysical program was undertaken at the Lake Huron Tunnel for the purpose of developing a geophysical technique that could be applied to determining the thickness of rock above the crown of the tunnel and identifying anomalous geologic conditions ahead of the face as the tunnel was advanced. The Lake Huron Tunnel is an 18.5 foot diameter machine bored tunnel having a total length of approximately 6 miles. The easternmost 4.5 mile section of the tunnel extends offshore beneath Lake Huron. At the time this study was started, approximately 1.5 miles of bore remained to be completed at the east end of the project. The tunnel is part of a raw water intake for the City of Detroit water supply. The Lake Huron Tunnel is bored in Antrim shale, a dense marine shale of Mississippian or Devonian age. The west end of the project encountered banded brown shale containing numerous calcareous concretions ranging in size from a few inches to more than 16 feet in diameter. As the tunnel was advanced in an easterly direction, a transition was encountered into very uniform gray shale. One set of prominent vertical joints was encountered with a strike running approximately 15 to 20 degrees askew of the tunnel axis. Bedding is essentially flat. Variable quantities of salt water and natural gas occur in the rock. The results of exploratory drilling carried out for preliminary design studies indicated that as little as 30 to 35 feet of rock cover could be expected under the lake at the east end of the project.

Alaska is in competition with the rest of the world for exploration dollars. Providing a "seed package" of airborne geophysical data for the state's numerous mining districts encourages companies to begin more detailed exploration in more areas than they could have afforded on their own. When data are already available, the initial risk decreases for people involved in exploration. Airborne magnetic and electromagnetic data help ge¬ologists and geophysicists determine what rocks and structures are present under overburden and vegetation. These data form a fundamental package that exploration companies want before intensively exploring most regions. Individual mining companies have conducted their own geophysical surveys during the past several decades. However, these data are not available to other companies. The companies able to afford geophysical surveys have less money for ground exploration after purchasing expensive, private geophysical data. Therefore, they are not able to explore as many places as they might. Additionally, since data are not shared with other exploration companies, the proprietary surveys do not foster intercompany competition to move projects forward. Individual prospectors and small companies can not afford their own geophysical surveys. "It is more often than not the grassroots exploration efforts of the smaller operator that leads to significant discoveries," said Klaus M. In the Basin and Range Province of Nevada, geophysics is used to assist exploration for bulk minable gold deposits, particularly over pediments. It is employed for mapping thickness of alluvium and Tertiary valley fill, for mapping covered structures, and for identifying alteration zones. In addition to potential field and seismic methods, three different electrical and electromagnetic methods are frequently used, resistivity-induced polarization, controlled source audiomagnetotellurics, and time domain EM. A review and comparison of the principles of these methods, illustrated by case histories, is the topic of this paper.

Abstract. Gulf Coast Salt Domes are being considered for radioactive waste disposal and this paper describes the geophysical techniques currently being used and those being considered for later phases of the program. Detailed gravity work utilizing a modification of the Talwani-Ewing modeling technique, shallow high resolution reflection seismic surveys using the mini-sosie concept, surface electrical resistivity and down-hole geophysical logging to add a third dimension to all of the surface techniques and to allow inverse modeling of the surface data sets are being utilized. The logic of the combined geophysical surveys will be discussed as well as their relative economics and their relationship to the overall exploration effort.

Ground-water contamination from uranium operations could be avoided with proper site analysis techniques. Contamination from tailings disposal sites is carried downgradient within permeable hydrostratigraphic units which can be located and delineated with a combination of drill holes and borehole geophysical logs. Engineering safeguards can be designed into a disposal site by determining if permeable hydrostratigraphic units exist which will dominate the flow system and provide seepage paths for contaminates. It is more cost-effective to accurately assess seepage potential with geophysical logs before contamination becomes a problem than to be faced with a major clean-up effort after contamination has occurred. If a uranium waste impoundment already has a ground-water contamination problem, then borehole geophysical logs may be used to delineate the contaminated zones which need to be cleaned up. It is less expensive to withdraw the contaminated plume from only within the affected zones rather than attempt to dewater the entire area. Consequently, the geophysical logs are invaluable in assessing which zones should be pumped and where packers should be set for construction of piezometers to allow monitoring of water-quality changes. A surface geophysical technique is being tested and developed for monitoring of seepage frum uranium tailings impoundments. Geoelectric soundings and profiles from direct current resistivity surveys can locate anomalous areas for the placement of drill holes to better assess seepage. This reconnaissance technique should eliminate random hit-or-miss drilling at sites where monitoring is required. Tests and experiments are being done on developing the capabilities of this technique to incorporate complex resistivity data to assess cultural impedence noise which complicates simple resistivity data.

The mineral deposits found in carbonate facies rocks of sedimentary basins include deposits comprised of the country rock itself such as limestone for chemical uses, dolomite for road aggregate, and a variety of other industrial uses of the sedimentary rock. Exploration for new reserves is generally conducted on basis of outcrop investigation, subsurface drilling, and facies change studies while geophysics and geochemistry are not applied. In contrast, rapid development has taken place in the application of both geophysical and geochemical techniques in exploration for stratiform deposits of zinc, lead, barite, and fluorite deposits. This paper will present case histories and show illustrations from such work in the Mid-Continent region. The Metals Division of International Oil & Gas, Inc. has gathered this experience through work over the last three years along the southern margin of the Eastern Interior platform focusing on the states of Arkansas and Tennessee. The exploration work was conducted partially for the Company's own account, partially in joint exploration ventures with mining companies including International Mogul Mines, Ltd., a Canadian company; Bear Creek Mining Company, a subsidiary of Kennecott Copper Corporation; the Mining Division of W. R. Grace and Company, and Boliden-Preussag Exploration, a Swedish-German partnership. The Candelaria copper-gold deposit is located in Region m of Chile, 805 kilometers north of the capital, Santiago. Candelaria was discovered in 1987, following a six month exploration program. In late 1986, induced polarization (IP) surveys outlined an anomalously high response within the area of interest. The first test hole bad three intersections totaling 49 meters, with an average grade of 1.97% copper. Drilling eventually outlined approximately 390 million tonnes, grading 1.09010 copper and 0.26 grams/tonne gold. Production began in early 1995 and is estimated at 120,000 tonnes copper and 80,000 ounces gold annually.

The evaluation of Abandoned Mined Lands can involve the investigation of very large areas of land. Often, the locations of critical areas or impending problems are unknown, and are not easily identified from the surface. Microseismic monitoring has been demonstrated to be effective in identifying potential instabilities and active movement in mines from distances of several kilometers. By placing sensors in proximity to, or in contact with, a high acoustic conductance layer close to the mined zone, large areas can be monitored for potential problems with a minimum of sensors and drillholes. As part of a U.S. Bureau of Mines contract, a prototype system was developed to identify and locate potential instability problems over wide areas of land. Once a problem area has been located, the system can be used to analyze the type of the problem, its size, relative degree of instability, and potential for damage. Continued monitoring after application of remedial measures can effectively determine the efficacy of those measures.

A geophysical investigation can provide valuable geologic information needed to characterize sand-and- gravel deposits and can be an attractive complement to more common characterization methods such as drilling. Although such investigations have been conducted already, a comparison of the different geophysical methods used in these investigations apparently has never been done. For this reason, a study was initiated by the Mineral Resources Program of the U.S. Geological Survey to determine the advantages and the limitations of different geophysical methods when used to evaluate alluvial sand-and-gravel deposits. The study is focused on those geophysical methods that are commonly available, because these are most likely to be used by industry. Furthermore, the study is focused on surface geophysical methods. Heretofore, four different methods have been evaluated. Three of the four methods-time-domain electro-magnetic (TEM) soundings, frequency-domain electro-magnetic profiling, DC-resistivity soundings-are similar in that they all measure the electrical resistivity of the ground with depth. Ground-penetrating radar, however, maps changes in the dielectric permittivity and for the electrical resistivity with depth. For all, four methods, the objective is to relate the measured physical quantity to the stratigraphy of the alluvial sediments.

To many, petroleum exploration and successful geophysics , are partly synonomous, This is not because natural petroleum is usually concentrated as a liquid, nor certainly not because oil can be detected directly. The reason is Chat geophysics helps to at least better understand and sometimes, to even explain the essential geology involved. That groundwater is similarly a liquid with all but a few of its basic geologic relationships practically identical to petroleum, seems to have escaped many of those most interested and responsible for complete geo-hydrologic knowledge. The paramount need to use every means at our disposal for maintaining and expanding our crustal resources reserves are generally obvious, However, in view of the rapidly mounting requirements, continual re-emphasis is worthwhile.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are considered critical minerals for the industrial and defense sectors. In 2018, the U.S. Department of the Interior presented the final list of critical minerals that are vital to the U.S. economy and defense [1], which included REEs among other mineral commodities. REEs are not rare, despite their name, but economically viable deposits of REEs can be found only in certain geographical areas, and the political and social conditions characterizing these areas may not always be in favor of mining operations. Mining operations may be placed in great operational and financial risk if operations are planned in such areas. Erroneous decisions by decision makers may lead to a chain of events that can completely shut down a mining project.

Rare earth elements (REEs) are considered critical minerals for industrial and defense sectors. REEs are not as rare as the word “rare” portrays; yet, the exploitable and/or profitable deposits of REEs may be found only in certain geographical areas. The political and social conditions characterizing these areas may not always be in favor of mining operations. These conditions are imposing the need for extra consideration on the geopolitical constraints prior to any decision-making and before any mining project begins. This study assesses the risk related to mining projects for areas that feature REE deposits based on a geopolitical viewpoint. Probable ranking differences between the current assessment and a 2015 assessment are discussed. The comparative indicators used and the appraisal procedure applied in this comparison are based on a number of different geopolitical indicators. Several ranking changes occurred between 2015 and 2019.

The mining industry faces increasing geopolitical risk in the coming decades. Constraints such as resource nationalism, corruption and social license could grow to outweigh fundamental limitations like geology or supply and demand (Ernst & Young, 2013; Verrastro et al. 2010). Lurking beneath these more immediate and palpable concerns, however, may be more significant risks entrenched in geography and history. Deep-rooted cultural and strategic forces that emerge slowly ? or erupt suddenly and unexpectedly ? can generate momentous and far-reaching political, social and economic changes. While multinational enterprises routinely assess for political risk, the nature of minerals extraction means long-term and systemic geopolitical conditions are especially important for mining companies to identify and understand. Mine development is a decades-long process that binds companies to the land and makes changing course to avert emerging threats a difficult and costly option. Consequently, geopolitical assessment is a pertinent and valuable tool that mining companies can use to more comprehensively evaluate strategic threats and opportunities. Geopolitics is the study of society, politics and strategy through the lens of geography (Gray, 1996). Its emphasis on relatively permanent physical features of the earth makes geopolitics a uniquely valuable tool for assessing political risk. Topography, climate and natural resources have shaped, constrained and motivated peoples and governments throughout history. These influences transcend regimes, policies and borders ? and even states themselves ? which, by contrast, change often and dramatically. Framing politics against mountains, deserts and rivers supports identification of historical patterns and forecasts of emerging trends. In other words, the physical map provides an objective and consistent model for studying a subjective and dynamic subject such as politics (Sloan and Gray, 1999). Consequently, geopolitical assessment can highlight threats and opportunities that go unaddressed by other risk methodologies that emphasize current conditions (Glancy, 2012). Taken together, the permanence of geography, hindsight afforded by centuries of political history, and interconnectedness of world events makes geopolitical assessment a valuable approach for conceptualizing strategic risk.

The ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is the key pozzalonic component of the concrete mix, widely used as the construction material world-wide. Billions of tons of OPC are used in the construction industry each year. However, calcinations of limestone and silica that produce OPC also produce almost an equal amount of CO2 during the cement manufacturing process. Thus, OPC production accounts for nearly 7% of all anthropogenic CO2 emission each year. The main objective of this study was to develop a geopolymer-based composite to be used as a substitute for OPC in concrete application to significantly lower the carbon foot print of the construction industry. A waste material produced during the coal combustion process was used as the main raw material for the geopolymer-based composite. It was mostly the non-metallic content of the F-type fly ash produced from the combustion of bituminous coal. The authors envisioned to extract some of the valuable metal oxides from fly ash prior to using the major non-metallic portion of the fly ash for geopolymer concrete application. The results obtained from this study exhibited that the compressive strength of the geopolymer concrete compares favorably with that of the conventional concrete prepared using the OPC.

The use of mining tailings-based geopolymer binder as a substitute for cement can be an interesting alternative to the problem of final disposing of large volumes of them. Indeed, mining tailings have a high silica content, which makes them suitable for geopolymerization. The tailings samples contain Cu, Pb, Zn, As, Sb, Cd and Bi, mainly. X-ray diffraction results show that the tailings are composed of quartz, SiO2 (81%). Geopolymerized tailing samples (GTPS) were obtained by varying the ratio of SiO2/ Al2O3 and SiO2/NaOH. The compressive strength of the GTPS varied between 2 MPa and 8 MPa. The electrical conductivity in the leaching tests varies between 13.91– 16.11 mS/cm2 indicating that ions are present in the solution. However, the pH = 10.5 indicates that acidity is not being generated. The element that mostly leaches is iron. The highest percentage of leaching is observed for cadmium (69%) and chromium (93%). The concentrations of elements are under the maximum permissible limits for water according to the Peruvian legislation. However, mass transfer leach tests and immersion leach tests must be realized.

"During his presentation at the 2016 George A. Fox Conference about the history of public-private-partnerships (PPP) in the tunneling and underground construction industries in New York, Vincent Tirolo, Jr., told a story about how, as a young engineer in the late 1960s, he and others pooled money to purchase a calculator for $75 that had the ability to perform sine and cosine functions. That was a big deal in those days and would make their job much easier. Oh how far things have come. Tunnel and underground construction engineers can now virtually map out and plan entire projects before the first shovel ever breaks ground. And the machines that are used to build the tunnels have advanced in ways that could not have been imagined 50 years ago.The calculator is just one example of innovation in the industry and on Jan. 26, more than 400 industry professionals attended the George A. Fox Conference at the Graduate Center of New York (CUNY) to learn more about the next innovations, new tunneling technologies and what the future might hold for the industry. The conference included sessions on contracting models, rescue and fire life safety and new technological developments as well as an international project spotlight presentation from Nasri Munfah about the Eurasia Tunnel, connecting the European and Asian sides of Istanbul, Turkey.The project, also known as the Istanbul Strait Road Tube Crossing project, was named the 2015 Major Tunneling Project of the Year by the International Tunneling and Underground Space Association.The tunnel boring work for the 3,344-m (11,000 ft) long tunnel under the Istanbul Bosphorus Strait was completed in August, heralding a new era in tunneling.Tunnel boring work was launched in April 2014 with a ceremony with then Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan in attendance. The work was completed on Aug. 22, 2015 with Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu participating in the ceremony."
