The relationship of various genetic classifications of graphite, their properties and general applications are reviewed. The classifications being amorphous, flake, high crystalline (vein) primary synthetic graphite and secondary graphite. The properties discussed are size, carbon, sulfur, ash content, general chemical analysis and degree of graphitization of each type. The major sources for natural and synthetic graphite powders are discussed in addition to factors which govern the cost as well as the supply. The economics of graphite are basically determined by the consumer and the end application. Graphite is a strategic mineral and is on the government stockpile list.

The economics of transporting minerals by sea in less than full cargo lots encompasses an analysis of production costs, sale and inventory calculations and a careful comparison of ocean freight costs all of which when pieced together will usually definitively indicate which of the ocean freight alternatives is the correct one for the economic factors involved. To illustrate: Let us assume that a production to be marketed yields 60,000 metric tons of copper concentrates over a twelve month period. Shipment is geographically viable through Vancouver, B.C. The production has been sold to a Japanese Smelter and the mine produces at a rate of 5,000 metric tons of concentrates per month. The copper has been sold CIF FO. The Seller has carefully investigated ocean freight rates Vancouver, B.C./Hibi, Japan and finds that he could obtain a twelve month freight contract at $15.00 per metric ton FIGS based on a loading/discharging speed of 4000/ 2000 metric tons per WWDSHEX (weather working day, Sundays and Holidays excluded) this freight rate being predicated on shipping in lots of minimum. 15,000 tons. A further freight investigation reveals that to ship at the same terms and conditions but in lots of 5,000 tons, and shipping each month (in accordance with the mine's actual production) would cost $20.00 per metric ton FIOS. The calculation that is now made is whether it is more desireable to pay a higher ocean freight by shipping in 5,000 ton lots or to pay the lower freight where here the ocean freight involves a difference of some $300,000.00.

The name Perlite applies to both a hydrated volcanic glass containing from 2% to 5% combined water and to the lightweight material that is produced from expanding the sized volcanic glass. Upon heating, Perlite expands to about twenty times its original volume which results in a material of low density, low thermal conductivity, and high sound absorpt'ion. Perlite ore is mined by open pit methods and is crushed and sized to provide specific gradations for expanding into products used in acoustical tile, built- up roofing, filtration, lightweight concrete and horticultural applications, among others. In 1983, the U.S. production of crude Perlite came from 12 mines and 6 western states, with apparent consumption and production estimated to be about 6% lower than 1982. The average price per ton was slightly higher than in 1982.

Since western bentonite is one of the industrial minerals marketed throughout the world, the various markets and freight costs are included.

The sulphur shortage that has occurred in the past two years has directed attention more and more toward sour natural gas reserves, Wellhead values of sour gas vary widely depending upon the acid gas composition, location, market conditions, and necessary processing charges. Preparation of a saleable residue gas is considerably more involved and expensive than that normally encountered in treating a sweet gas. Recent revisions in sales gas specifications have increased capital costs and processing charges. The presence of hydrogen sulphide and carbon dioxide in a natural gas contributes to shrinkage factors that may approach 50%. Fuel required by the gas sweetening process and sulphur slant tail gas incineration also contributes to a further reduction in the volume of residue gas available for sale. The additional processing facilities involving gas sweetening, mercaptan removal, expanded utilities, sulphur recovery and sulphur handling, all demand additional operating and maintenance staff. A favorable sulphur market under certain conditions may justify the processing of sour gas whereby sulphur is either a by-product or a co-product, Five typical cases involving different compositions of sour gas are presented for evaluation. This trend, away from outdoor storage piles, will probably continue at a stronger pace in the 1980's. Introduction Over the last five years, a large number of small- to medium-sized carbon-in-pulp treatment plants have been built in Australia, most designed to treat between 250,000 t/a and 1.5 Mt/a of ore. Because of the limited capital resources and tight cash-flow positions of these relatively small mining companies, the primary requirement was often to get a plant built and operating in a short period of time and at minimal capital cost. Therefore, since the inclusion of both pre-leach and tailings thickeners represents an obvious and significant capital cost, most of these plants were built without thickeners or even detailed, cost-benefit analyses on their inclusion. In some cases, the increasing use of High Rate Thickeners (HRTs) in the mineral processing industries has, however, resulted in a reassessment, because of their considerably lower cost. This reassessment was triggered primarily by the need to conserve water in arid mining areas where borefields are costly to install and water is limited. With the startup and operation of these installations, the resulting significant savings in cyanide consumption has been recognized, in many situations, as a primary justification for the installation of HRTs. Solution balances Degradation of cyanide occurs in the tailings water discharge to slime dams. The degree of degradation (cyanide loss) in the water recovered depends on a number of factors, but it is usually assumed to be about 90%. The most important mechanisms of CN loss are through HCN losses and oxidation by oxygen in the air, which also assists in the hydrolysis of CN. These mechanisms are supported by the large dam surface area and the long retention time of the tailings water in the dam. By thickening the CIP tailings at the plant and recovering as much tailings water as immediately possible, these losses are avoided. The retention time in an HRT is less than three hours, and the surface area is relatively small. Therefore, CN losses are negligible, which is not necessarily the case in conventionally-sized thickeners. Fig. I shows a block diagram of a 100-t/h gold plant without a thickener. In this example, 50% of the tailings water pumped to the tailings dam is recovered, and the CN concentration of the returned water is 10% of the tailings CN concentration of 150 ppm. Fig. 2 represents a plant with an HRT on tailings, thickening to 55% w/w solids. In this case, the thickened tailings are pumped to the dam, and 25% of the contained water is recovered. The recovered water and the mill make-up water are not sent directly to the mill; instead, they are added to the thickener feed and mixed with it prior to thickening. By doing this, the tailings are effectively washed, and the additional cyanide is recovered. Solution balances over these two circuits show cyanide recoveries of 5% and 65%, respectively. Thus, the thickener use increases cyanide recovery by 60%. Fig. 3 shows a two-stage HRT circuit in a countercurrent decantation (CCD) configuration. In this example, an additional 13% of cyanide is recovered through the use of the second-stage unit. This configuration can be justified when residual cyanide levels are high. The preparation of a paper reporting fluorspar economics in the United States at one point in time could have been somewhat complicated be- cause of the number of producers, both large and small, that derived production from different locations throughout the Western U. S. and the Southern Illinois and Western Kentucky fluorspar districts . Companies such as Allied Chemical and William- son Mining operated in the Jamestown district of Colorado. In Walden and Salida, Colorado, the Colorado Fluorspar Company operated mines and mills.

Before the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990, coal policies-especially coal research policies-were geared to find a solution to the sulfur emission problem. However, technologies to reduce sulfur emissions cannot be tailored for a single coal. A technology that will clean Illinois coal to compliance levels will do the same, or nearly the same, for most other types of coal. This paper will discuss an integrated approach to the analysis of the future of coals from different regions in the United States and its implications for coal-related policies by government and industry.

The United States has abundant coal resources that could last at least another century. and probably longer at present consumption rates. Geographically, the coal resources are distributed over the entire nation including Alaska, although there are no coal deposits in the highly populated areas on the two coasts. This allows free access to the coal, but makes transportation more expensive. Not all coals can be utilized equally because they differ vastly in quality. The sulfur content of coals, considered as the most detrimental acid rain-causing element, varies from as low as 0.3 percent in some areas of the western U.S. to 5 percent or more in parts of the Midwest. The chlorine content, which causes corrosion of plant hardware, also varies regionally. The 1990 amendments of the Clean Air Act of 1963 (CAA) require that emissions of sulfur be restricted and rolled back in two stages by the year 2000. There have been a number of reports expressing concern about the future of the industry in the states where high sulfur coal is produced. The remedies devised by the federal government and many coal-producing states in the past to "se-cure" the future of the regional coal industries have focused on the physical task of removing sulfur rather than the economic challenge of doing so at a cost that will enable high-sulfur coals to survive and compete. The past remedies, generally, were not specific enough to account for the characteristics of regional coal deposits and did not look at the coal market as an integrated national and international entity. The State of Illinois has, in recent years, taken a more comprehensive approach to the solution of the problem.

The trend in open pit mining has been to maintain cost competitiveness through economies of scale, particularly by implementing larger trucks and shovels. This paper considers the potential adverse impact of such scale adjustment, however, on dilution, maintenance, flexibility, and other aspects of operations. It examines the mine production characteristics affected by increased equipment size and attempts to quantify the impact on the overall operation. Reference is made to data from operations that have experienced a variety of equipment size ranges changes over the last decade.

The Cal-Sag Relief Sewer is a 2.6 m (8 ft 6 in.) diameter 9.1 km (5.7 mile) rock tunnel bored in dolomite for the Metropolitan Sanitary District of Greater Chicago. Included in the project are 18 shafts varying in depth free 70 m (230 ft) to 41 m (135 ft). This paper discusses how Healy/Vanessa reduced costs by eliminating conventional hand excavation by hoisting muck from a high production Robbins TBM (Tunnel Boring Machine) through small diameter drilled shafts and using a trailing rail-utility backup system.

Who We Are Farmland Hydro (FHLP) is a Limited Partnership formed by Farmland Industries, the largest U.S. farmers’ cooperative, located in Kansas City, MO, and Norsk Hydro, a large Norwegian company engaged in fertilizer, petroleum and the specialty metals industry. Both of our parent companies have a long history of commitment to the fertilizer industry. This year, Farmland Industry celebrates its 71st year in the business, and Norsk Hydro celebrates its 100th operating year! We employ approximately 300 associates in Central Florida. What We Do Farmland has been active in Hardee County, FL since the 1970’s as a large landowner and citrus grower. We plan to expand this activity into phosphate rock mining. The phosphate rock produced here will be shipped to our nearby chemical fertilizer complex in Polk County, where we produce quality phosphate products - liquid and granular fertilizers. Of the phosphate rock mined, 90% is used to make fertilizer. Other uses include animal feed, vitamins, medicine, light bulbs, soft drinks, film, flame resistant fabric, optical glass, toothpaste, bone china and other consumer products.

EPA NRMRL Mine Waste Technology Program and Region VIII Superfund office are jointly conducting an in-situ technology demonstration at the Anchor Hill Pit Lake, Gilt Edge Mine Superfund site. The goal is to develop in-situ treatment cost/performance data for potential application in long-term water treatment/management at Gilt Edge and similar sites. The pit contained 77,000,000 gallons of pH 3water with elevated metals, sulfate, and nitrate. The Green World Science® patented process for in situ treatment was implemented to isolate and sequester metals; create stable long-term water quality and restore a sustainable ecosystem. COCs have decreased more than 99%, and dissolved discharge standards were attained.

A qualitative test program was sponsored jointly by the University of Alaska and Eriez Magnetics, in order to study placer gold nugget recovery using an eddy-current separator. Various gold nuggets from Alaska, ranging from 6.4 mm to 63.5 mm in size, were tested. All testing was performed using an Eriez Laboratory ESC, Model REA, fitted with 2000 gauss, surface field strength magnetic rotor. The belt speed was set to 91 meters per minute and the rotor speed was set to 2500 rpm in the forward direction. The splitter was adjusted to just reject the largest pieces of rock that measured an average 76 mm x102 mm x 127 mm. Based on the results of this limited test work, it can be recommended to placer gold mine operators, that Eriez Magnetics ECS technology is a viable and practical concentration technology for coarse gold recovery. Silver and platinum were also tested.

"The Colorado School of Mines has used the Edgar Mine in Idaho Springs as an experimental mine to teach students since 1921. Since the school acquired the former gold, silver, lead and zinc mine, countless students have received hands-on engineering lessons on their way to earning mining engineering degrees. On Dec. 14, the House Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources held a historic field hearing about the future of mining education in the United States in a classroom about 300 m (1,000 ft) inside the Edgar Mine. Representatives Doug Lamborn (R-CO), Rob Bishop (R-UT), Cresent Hardy (R-NV) and Ed Perlmutter (D-CO) were on hand for the first ever congressional hearing held in a mine where they heard testimony supporting the Mining School Enhancement Act, which was introduced to Congress by Hardy and Perlmutter on Oct. 9, 2015. The act, which is part of a larger mining development and reclamation reform package, seeks to address the absence of a viable pipeline necessary to replenish current faculty vacancies in United States Mining Schools. “What better place to hold a hearing to discuss the need for future mining engineering experts,” Subcommittee Chair Lamborn said in his opening statement. “It is a need felt by industry, states, the federal government as well as nonprofits.” The Mining School Enhancement Act would redirect millions of dollars in fees that are being collected from active mining operations to fund the research and educational programs at engineering schools with mining programs. Those fees now are being used in the form of grants awarded by the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977 (SMRCA)."

Edmonton South LRT is the latest expansion of the Subway system in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada: Consisting of twin 5.8m segmental lined tunnels, 280m long, driven by a Lovat EPB machine. The key challenges were as follows. A 6% downhill grade. Tight radius curves of 250m.Overlying structures within 3m of the tunnel. Strata consisting of sand above the water table, glacial tills and bed rock below the water table. Located within The University of Alberta Campus and adjacent to a hospital. Northern Alberta climate with winter temperatures routinely falling below—minus 30 degrees Celsius. This paper provides a case history and outlines the challenges involved in completing this project.
