The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted a study to identify the sources of respirable dust and appropriate dust controls applicable to today's high tonnage longwall faces. The primary source of respirable dust identified is the cutting action of the shearer; however, the pct contribution of dust from coal transport through the stageloader/crusher was significant. This was primarily due to the high rate of mining, requiring rapid and constant coal transport. Techniques implemented for the control of shearer-generated dust included high drum water flow rates, deep cutting, shearer-clearer-type external water spray systems, and radio-remote control. The high water flow rates, and an enclosed stageloader with scrubber, were used to control dust during coal transport. No novel or effective control technology exists to control dust during support advance. Administrative controls for dust avoidance, and manual and batch-activated electro-hydraulic control systems were used to keep support movers out of the dust generated during support advance.

"After industrial sand has been mined and processed, the finished product is typically loaded into small bags of 45 kg (100 lb) or less, large bulk bags of 454 to 1,361 kg (1,000 to 3,000 lb), or vehicles such as trucks or trains for transport to end users. As the sand is being transferred and loaded, dust can be released into the work environment, potentially exposing workers to respirable crystalline silica. A number of control technologies have been developed and utilized in an effort to reduce dust liberation during loading operations. For bulk loading into trucks or trains, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated one of these technologies, the Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH), at two industrial sand processing plants. Results from these case studies show that the DSH reduced airborne respirable dust levels by 39 to 88 percent, depending upon the product size being loaded.IntroductionInhalation of respirable crystalline silica dust can lead to the development of silicosis, a disabling and potentially fatal lung disease. Once contracted, there is no cure for silicosis, so the goal is to prevent the development of the disease by limiting exposure to respirable dust containing crystalline silica at or below the exposure limit of 50 µg/ m3 recommended by the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH, 2002). At industrial silica sand operations, the product contains high levels of crystalline silica, so effective control technologies are needed to minimize the respirable dust exposure of workers.NIOSH, in partnership with the Industrial Minerals Association–North America, published a dust control handbook (NIOSH, 2012) focused upon control technologies for industrial- mineral mining and processing operations. One chapter in this handbook discussed technologies for controlling dust liberated during bulk loading, including telescoping loading spouts, dust collection systems for loading spouts, enclosures for load-out areas and a newer technology known as Dust Suppression Hopper (DSH)."

Over the last 20 years, the manufacturing sector of our country has been called upon to comply with ever core stringent environmental standards. The primary metals sector was particularly hard hit early on, to develop the technology, acquire the equipment, and implement the programs to eliminate or reduce the by-products of metal making. To this end, through a combination of technological innovation and extensive capital expenditures, the metals industry has met, and in many cases, exceeded the minimum standards. It is to this escalating cost - liability exposure issue - that Dereco has addressed itself. As we move into the decade of the 90's, the challenge facing the metals industry concerning the environment will be even more difficult than the previous decade. To focus in on one major aspect of legislated environmental regulations, the issue we will address today is; now that the by-products of metal production have been identified, accounted for and collected, how are they to be disposed of? The potential for methane and coal dust explosions in underground coal mining operations has increased in recent years with the introduction of fast coal-cutting machines. Dust explosions usually follow accidental ignition of a methane pocket. The dynamics of the explosion may be strong enough to pick up and disperse coal dust deposited on mine surfaces and ignite the mixture. A self-sustaining dust explosion can then develop and propagate at large distances. Ignition of dusts can result in a fire, and this may also lead to a dust explosion if the burning dust becomes airborne. Entrainment of dust and the resulting dust concentration in the gas stream are some factors which determine the features of the subsequent explosion and flame propagation. A model of coal dust transport in the gas stream due to the initial explosion is presented. In this model, equations for the conservation of mass, momentum and energy are coupled with the convective-diffusive model of dust transport. The system of equations is solved numerically to obtain dust concentration, convective velocity and gas pressure profiles.

On the Earth's Moon, obvious hazards to humans and machines are created by extreme temperature fluctuations, low gravity, and the virtual absence of any atmosphere. The most important other environmental factor is ionizing radiation. Less obvious environmental hazards that must be considered before establishing a manned presence on the lunar surface are the hazards from micrometeoroid bombardment, the nuisance of electro-statically-charged lunar dust, and an alien visual environment without familiar clues. Before man can establish lunar bases and lunar mining operations, and continue the exploration of that planet, we must develop a means of mitigating these hazards.

Silica and Crystalline Quartz exposure continues to be a serious health threat to nearly 2 million workers in the United States, including more than 100,000 working in high risk jobs such as abrasive blasting, foundry work, stonecutting, rock drilling, quarry work, mining and tunneling. The primary focus of this study is to identify the best methodology to reduce particulate-laden air and limit/eliminate exposure to respirable dust with silica/crystalline quartz during tunneling operations. This study focuses on two de-dusting systems employed on similar tunnel construction projects. The first project is the Coxwell Bypass Tunnel located in Toronto, Ontario Canada. The second project is the Westerly Storage Tunnel located in Cleveland, Ohio. The Toronto project is utilizing a wet de-dusting system. The Cleveland project is using a dry de-dusting system. The objective is to determine which system provides the best protection and suitability to capture, remove and ultimately reduce respirable concentrations of silica/ crystalline quartz to safety and healthy levels in underground tunneling activities.

INTRODUCTION Passive dust control systems are quickly gaining acceptance in the bulk solids handling industries. The number of applications is increasing due to proven performance, especially in US power plants burning Powder River Basin coal. Air Control Sciences ®, Inc., of Boulder, Colorado, has over forty (40) patented Dustless Transfer ® systems in operation. All of the installations control workspace dust levels to less than 2.0 mg/m3, and in some applications reduced conveyor dusting by over ninety-eight percent (98%). Passive systems control fugitive dust emissions by minimizing the induced airflow in bulk material transfer and slowing its velocity. Traditionally, fugitive dust control in the mining industry was accomplished using either dust collection systems or dust suppression systems. The term passive dust control, indicates these methods don't use any active dust collection or suppression. Passive dust control systems are best suited to transfer from one conveyor to another. They can also be applied to transfers from feeder to conveyors.

Within the framework of the adaptation of the South-East European Technicentre (Technicentre Sud-Est Européen TSEE), SNCF Voyageurs appointed Pini with the project management mission (MOE) for the design and construction monitoring of a road tunnel. This investment has a dual function: during the site transformation phase, it facilitates the work logistics (and shorten traffic flows); and in the operating phase, it is intended to ease all movements on the site over the long term. This is a limited-length gallery (50 meters) to be performed in conventional excavation below Poniatowski Avenue (Paris 12e). The excavation, crossing the entire width of the boulevard, constitutes a major challenge, given the very low coverage (less than 5.5 m), and the surrounding main infrastructures. The same project mis- sion includes the design of the tunnel accesses, via reinforced-concrete frame structures. The targeted design questions several aspects of its execution framework, and particularly, continuous operation must be guaranteed to the neighboring networks during the works. The installation of an umbrella- pipe all along the excavation profile, the progression in divided sub-sections, and the implementation of a complex monitoring system are hence key elements for limiting and controlling any deformation. An exhaustive 3D finite element modelling was performed, taking into account the detailed phasing of construction (pre-support, excavation in divided section, preliminary support and definitive lining), to dimen- sion the structures, and, overall, to analyze the impacts on the neighboring structures and facilities. During the execution phase (planned for mid-2024), monitoring activities with back-analyses as close as possible to the works are planned.

The success of Heavy Media Separation, the static sink-float process, is evidenced by the operation of an estimated 300 installations treating many millions of tons per year of a wide variety of mineral products ranging in value from gravel to diamonds. The static heavy media process is usually limited to the treatment of plus 1/4 inch material. Mr. Victor Rakowsky, who was largely instrumental in the development and application of heavy media separation, recognized the need for a new apparatus and process which would extend the application of heavy media into the finer size range without placing a restrictive limit on the top size of the feed. He recognized the requirement for the application of centrifugal force to augment the force of gravity in separating fines by sink-float techniques.

Surfactants are used to control the interfacial properties of the gas-liquid and liquid-solid inter- faces inflotation. This paper investigates the dynamic adsorption of surfactants at the gas-liquid intelface. The dynamic adsorption process was modeled by considering the surfactant mass transfer to the gas-liquid interface by dimion and the Langmuir and Frumkin adsorption isotherms. The numerical computation was applied to solve the non-linear governing equations. The dynamic adsorption was measured in tenns of the dynamic surface tension using the pen- dant drop method. The theoretical modek were compared against the experimental data obtained with non-ionic (Dowfroth 250) and ionic (sodium dodecylbenzene sulfate, SDBS) surfactants. The theoretical results agreed well with the erperimental data for SDBS, but not for Dowfrother 250, especially for the initial stage. Reasons for the variation in results are given in the paper.

The use of Dynamic Analysis techniques in the design of conveyor systems is extremely limited. The most frequent use of the technique is in large and expensive systems where the emphasis is on insurance against failure caused by catastrophic tension waves. This paper sets out to illustrate a much wider range of applications where dynamic analysis has been successfully employed. The examples chosen deal with identification and correction of dynamic low tension problems, the variability in take-up movement as other system parameters change, the requirement for proper tuning of starting controls and finally the absolute necessity for a complete understanding of the entire system when specifying brakes for critical applications. The intent of the paper is to get designers to view a conveyor as a system of interacting flexible components rather than as a single rigid body.

The dynamic behavior of batch mill, CSTR mill, and a closed grinding network consisting of a mill, sump, and cyclone was analyzed using the dynamic population balance model (PBM). The dynamic solution of the PBM of a batch, CSTR and a closed grinding network consisting of a mill, sump, and cyclone forms the basis of the dynamic analysis presented here. Two numerical dynamic solution approaches were used. These are: 1) providing additional constraints on breakage selection functions or 2) performing the Arbiter-Bhrany (or other) normalization of the selection functions. Actual experimental anthracite batch grinding data was used to obtain the functionality of the batch dynamic mill selection and breakage functions for a real physical system. The Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm for systems of constrained non-linear equations is used to solve the batch dynamic PBM grinding equations to obtain the grinding selection and breakage rate functions. The mill, sump and hydrocyclone were modeled as a CSTR operating at various retention times. Batch dynamic PBM data was used to provide the mill kinetic and breakage selection function data. Different dynamic solutions were obtained depending on the numerical approach used. Each solution approach to a dynamic PBM with transport, while giving the same prediction for a single batch grinding time, gives different solutions or predictions for mill composition for other grinding times. This fact makes dynamic nodal analysis and control problematic. The fact that the constraint solution approach gives a solution may suggest that normalization for closed networks is not necessary. Differences in solutions to the PBM cannot be excused away by inaccuracies in the data used to model the grinding phenomenon.

Rendering a solid hydrophobic and solid-fluid particle* attachment in flotation are recognized as not necessarily related (1,2). The attachment is governed by forces of attraction and repulsion which need to be considered. The induction time required for attachment after solid and fluid particle are brought into proximity (3-8) illustrates the point. Laskowski(8) showed that a reduced induction time favoured flotation but detected no change in contact angle, a standard indication of solid surface hydrophobicity. Induction .time is observed in fluid-fluid particle coalescence, there being called a rest time (9-11) The induction time phenomenon is related to the presence of a metastable liquid film (disjoining film (2)) of the continuous phase (water in flotation) which must thin and rupture to permit attachment. The lifetime of this film, which is governed by the rate of thinning and the probability of rupture with thicknesss, depends on a complex interaction of forces. Investigating these forces should help clarify the attachment process. Practical benefits would be improved understanding of slimes flotation (12,13) This paper is concerned with the role of the mobile fluid particle-water interface on the film lifetime, in particular, the role of time-dependent or dynamic interfacial properties resulting from deformation of this interface.

A PDP 11/34 computer has been inter- faced to existing instrumentation in a 400 tph rod-mill/ball-mill grinding circuit and programed with a Kalman filter to estimate several unmeasured variables. A dynamic two-size- fraction model of the circuit is used to predict the complete state of the circuit including particle size distributions around the circuit, mass holdups and flowrates, the ball-mill grinding rate, water additions and cyclone parameters. Online measurements of sump level, slurry densities and product particle size are used to update the model values sequentially on a 20-second interval. This procedure results in optimal estimates of circuit variables given the relative reliability of measurements and the accuracy of the model.

The ability of conveyor belts to transport large mass throughputs economically over previously unprepared ground has resulted in this system achieving great and extensive use. A significant component in this development is the conveyor belt itself. The development of high strength steel cord conveyor belts involves the optimising of splice design, the use of excellent rubber material especially in the splice, good craftsmanship during splice production and modern field vulcanisation equipment. The durability of a splice for belts of class St 3000 up to St 790 is expressed by the fatigue strength under dynamic stress. The results obtained with a test method and equipment developed by the University of Hannover indicate the present state of the art in this field. Belts of high nominal strength used on inclined long distance conveyors reach splice fatigue strengths of about 3000 N/mm. The design should only exploit approximately 50% of the fatigue strength determined in the tests as maximum operating stress. IMPORTANCE OF CONVEYOR BELT SYSTEMS The use of conveyor belt technology has expanded considerably over the last decades in the bulk goods transportation sector. Because of the favourable transport costs and the technology's adaptability to specific topographies, belt conveyors frequently represent the most economic solution. When flows of goods are large, as in German lignite mining operations, where masses of up to 40,000 t/h are given, it is the only technically feasible alternative. The use of belt conveyor systems allows the sensible distribution of the waste and the production of the coal (Hager, 1981). But this transportation alternative is also suitable when the masses involved are smaller. Whereas conveyor belts were only suitable for loose bulk goods up until a few years ago, today they are frequently also used for hard rock open cast mines, e.g. in the production of copper ore. Because of the favourable transport costs it is frequently still economic to use mobile crushers with a throughput of up to 10,000 t h 6 which breakdown the large blocks produced y explosives into transportable grain sizes. In many operations, trucks are only used to provide flexibility between the excavator and the crusher, i.e. over short routes, and the long, frequently steep, transport paths to the processing plant or to the spreader are undertaken by belt conveyors (Einenkel et al., 1992). The advantages of belt conveyors, i.e. to cope with large mass flows over inclines and down slopes of up to 1:4 have resulted in this system gaining very extensive use throughout the world. The conveyors can be installed over for the most part unprepared ground with suitable vertical radii, adapted to the locally available belt material. In the process individual conveyor belts with lengths of up to 15 km, and in the underground sector with lift heights of up to 1 km, have been built and operated. This great variety of application possibilities is complemented by a limited ability to pass through horizontal curves. This can be achieved with the help of design measures on the conveyor whilst bearing in mind the characteristics of the belt. STRESSING OF CONVEYOR BELTS IN DIFFERENT TYPES OF PLANT The advantage of conveyor belts compared with other systems is also to be found in the large available service-time window, i.e. the excellent reliability and the low costs of energy consumption and maintenance. It is in particular the reliability of a belt transport system which depends to a great degree on its main component, that is the belt - in all its different types and variations. For this reason, the belt is also given the greatest attention in the development of the individual components, because it is the belt which must be designed optimally with regard to various factors. The model can also provide an estimate of any potential resultant hydrogeological impacts of an operation via an array of element-specific single-valued parameters referred to as the field rating indices. The computational procedure was designed to fully exploit the benefits of hydrogeotechnology and use a combination of conceptual, physical, empirical, and numerical approaches to define, characterize, analyze, and evaluate flow controlling properties of fractured rock systems. The model presented here provides a dynamic prediction method for highly fractured flow; a practical tool in mine and water control planning; and a cost-effective means of assessing, based on the best available technology, the impacts of mining on the water resources within a mining environment to satisfy local and federal regulatory requirements. Unique features include consideration of laminar and non-darcian flow domains in double-porosity-pressure hydrogeological media.

Reservoir properties including porosity and permeability distributions in longwall coal mine gobs have direct application to modeling the flow patterns and gas distributions in the gobs. Proper assessment of these distributions is required to assess gob gas hazards such as spontaneous combustion and explosive methane mixtures and to optimize gob gas venthole operation and nitrogen inertization. Determining the reservoir properties is difficult given that the gob is inaccessible and direct measurements cannot be easily taken. Several techniques have been used by previous researchers and will be discussed. This paper will present the methodology used to model the gob compaction by simulating the sequential extraction of coal. Two Western US coal mines were used for case studies. By determining volumetric strain, the porosity and permeability distributions in the gob can be calculated. The geo-mechanical model predicts an axisymmetric volumetric strain distribution with a steeper slope near the start-up room and a shallower slope near the active face.

"In urban areas, it is often required to construct additional railway tunnels beneath existing railway tunnels. In this case, dynamic interaction between tunnels at the intersection becomes an important issue, as it amplifies structural behavior causing damage to structures and inconvenience to passengers. In this study, vibration superposition effect at the intersection between existing and newly constructed tunnels is investigated by the numerical method. Dynamic interaction mechanism is firstly examined using simple sine wave load, and then a typical analysis for actual multi-leveled tunnel intersection is performed. The results show that the dynamic amplification due to dynamic interaction of tunnels is 149% at the crown of lower tunnel. This indicates that the vibration superposition effect must be considered when the planning and design of a new tunnel beneath the existing tunnel. 1. INTRODUCTION In these days, there are increasing cases that trains cross without transfer stations in metropolitan areas. Consequently, either tunnel is necessarily to be neighboring or crossing, thus tunnel sections closely located are created as shown in Figure 1. If a new tunnel is constructed beneath the existing tunnel, the vibration due to trains passing through each tunnel can mutually affect. The behavior of coupled vibrations may occur and exceed the allowable structural limit, and cause inconvenience to passengers. Theoretically, when vibration waves are propagated from a source to different locations, amplification or decrease of the vibrations can occur by the principle of wave superposition and interference. Multi-leveled tunnel intersection is one of the cases mentioned above. In the actual tunnel, it is difficult to investigate the vibration superposition effect due to a complex ground conditions and structural geometries. In addition, train vibration itself is multi-source vibration, which cannot be theatrically analyzed. Thus, at the tunnel intersection, train vibration from two tunnels make the problem more complicated."
