The responses of calcite, feldspar and quartz minerals in a laboratory free-fall electrostatic separator after tribocharging with stainless steel, PVC and copper plates were investigated. The effects of H3BO3 and BaC12 chemical pretreatment on the electrical properties of the above minerals were examined. The changes in the electrical properties are discussed along with the determined charge, dielectric constant and electrical conductivity of the mineral samples. The electrical properties of the minerals and their responses to the electrical field during separation after tribocharging and chemical pretreatment are explored relative to the electrical behavior of the minerals.

Sampling has evolved at two large underground limestone mines as conditions and product requirements have grown tougher over 100 years of mine life, requiring innovative techniques to insure delivery of high purity limestone. Sampling insures delivery of consistent product to customers at the lowest possible cost. Statistical considerations have evolved from simple data collection to predictive and process capability analysis. Sample methods include borehole samples, face (using a proprietary face-sampling device), and total plant feed automatic, process, and final product sampling. Lessons learned, while keeping costs at historically low numbers, include the importance of geological models, exploration drilling density, face sampling, and blending of ore.

Historically, much of Western Australia's gold production has come from the refractory sulphide-telluride ores located in Kalgoorlie's Golden Mile. Most of the recent gold boom has been associated with low grade, open pit free-milling oxide deposits. Primary sulphides are commonly encountered at depth and in many cases are highly refractory. Different approaches to the problem of recovering go1d from these ores have been adopted subject to local conditions both technical and environmental. The least preferred option is the preparation of a gold- rich flotation concentrate which is shipped to a smelter. Roasting of flotation concentrates can be practised in certain remote locations where sulphur emissions are tolerated. Fine grinding of flotation concentrates followed by direct cyanidation is another popular approach although this often leads to fouling of carbon by flotation reagents in the adsorption section and high soluble gold losses.

Scarcely a month goes by that I or someone else at Newmont Mining or Newmont Gold isn't asked to give a talk on the topic I was asked to discuss today. Investors, financial analysts, geologists, metallurgists, even our government--everybody wants to know what the future holds for gold mining. Well, you're not going to get exactly what you asked for. Today, I'm prepared to focus primarily not on what the future will bring to us, but rather on what the future will demand from us. More than that, I cannot undertake because it isn't within my scope to predict how wise and resourceful everyone in our industry will be in the future. What our future will hold, as I see it, will depend on our--and our colleagues'-- responses to these very real demands. Three critical issues stand out in my mind as to what the future will demand of us in the gold mining industry. And these demands will be for: 1. The very greatest of technical expertise and innovation. 2. The highest order of environmental sensitivity and timely accommodation. 3. Planning, planning and more planning. All of these flow inexorably today from the traditional objective of any mining company--or any company in any business, and that is, to make money. Nothing as I see it, should be undertaken by a geologist, metallurgist or even an environmental department, unless the exercises will enhance profits; and nothing may be ignored which can have consequent damage to the bottom line. Thus, the three issues I've listed for you subordinate themselves to the objective of making money, although at least in the environmental area, it might seem to some that we can only incur additional costs without even a dollar-for-dollar return. I hope to disabuse you today of any such out-of-date notion. Let's tackle the first issue-- Technical Expertise and Innovation. Newmont Gold Company this year is celebrating its 25th anniversary of successful and profitable operations on the Carlin Trend. Carlin in 1961, which is when exploration began on the "Trend" by Newmont, actually may share a lot of similarities with Carlin today. They didn't then know where the gold was and, if they found it, they had one hell of a challenge mining and processing ore at a profit because gold was selling at only $35 an ounce. Today, we know where the current reserves are. But we don't know where our future reserves lie. Furthermore, we don't know exactly how we're going to mine them, and, as everyone here knows too well, we don't know what the optimum metallurgical treatment is, even if we can find and mine them. And all that despite the abundant level of modern experience and skills within the current generation of mining companies, and the fact that, even taking inflation into account, gold sells at a higher price today than in 1965 when Carlin began operations. But, of course, I'm telling you what you already know.

Attendance exceeded 4,500 minerals professionals from all over the world at SME's March 9-11 Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Orlando, FL. The exhibit, of more than 600 booths, featured 398 of the mining industry's premier suppliers. The keynote session, "Change makers in the industry," opened the meeting. The session featured Jeffrey Clevenger, president of Cyprus Climax Metals; Mark Baker, senior vice president of Modular Mining Systems, a division of Komatsu; and John Correnti, vice chairman, president and chief executive officer of Nucor. The SME meeting also featured four specialty programs: Bulk materials handling by conveyor belt, Latin American perspectives, plant operators' symposium and waste characterization and treatment. Also open to attendees were more than 60 technical sessions encom¬passing coal, the environment, industrial minerals, mining and exploration, minerals and metallurgical processing and minerals resource management. Ed Dowling was the chair of the 1998 SME technical programming committee. And Dowling, director of process management and engineering for Cyprus Minerals, acted as the host of the SME keynote session. Dowling said the mining industry has undergone incredible change over the last decade. And the forces of change continue to accelerate. These changes include globalization, regulatory pressures, technology, labor, competition, pricing and other market influences, he said. With that in mind, the SME program committee selected as the theme of this year's SME Annual Meeting, "The changing world of mining ... our role." Given some of the current commodity prices, Dowling said, the theme is timely. He also noted that a large percentage of the 60 technical sessions spoke to the evolving operational and business aspects of the mining industry as the industry crossed international boundaries. The keynote session mirrored the meeting theme by focusing on the increasing challenges and required changes the minerals industry faces. Dowling reminded keynote attendees that change is not a new idea. He said Benjamin Franklin described three types of people: Those who are immovable, those who can be moved and those who are movers. And so it was appropriate that three of the most forward-thinking movers in the business - Clevenger, Baker and Correnti - address the keynote session, Dowling said. John Callaway moderated the keynote session. He is senior correspondent for WTTW TV, the public broadcast station in Chicago. For the past 13 years, Callaway has served as host of WTTW's award-winning, primetime news analysis program, Chicago Tonight. Callaway said that the keynote changemakers are recognized as industry leaders whose vision has led to significant business transformation and results. It is important to understand the mission that TML, as a design/build contractor, has undertaken and how the various interfaces have evolved between the other entities involved in the project. Presentation of the project Underground civil works to be performed They include two single track running tunnels and a service tunnel of a length of fifty kilometers . Many cross adits (180 adits) : to link the tunnels (53 cross passages), to relieve air super pressure from one tunnel to the other (87 piston ducts), to install technical adits (40 electrical rooms). Two cross-overs located at one third of the whole length, allow trains to shunt from one tunnel to the other so as to ensure one way traffic in case of emergency. Pumping stations allow water to be collected at the lowest point and pumped out. 1 Main features of the tunnels 1.1 The service tunnel This 4.8 m inner diameter gallery allows During civil works - front probing operations of the geological layers encountered (front and vertical probes). - lateral soil grouting that may be necessary to facilitate the boring of the two running tunnels . During operations - Maintenance and safety vehicles traffic - Fresh air supply to running tunnels - Fire protection and drainage system - Electricity supply and control and communication. The service tunnel has been bored with a 5.72 meter external diameter Robbins TBM for the undersea section, and a MITSUBISHI TBM for the land section.

Mining activities have recently been taken place in Vourinos mountain, northern Greece, exploiting the so-called ?olivinite?. A representative sample was collected from this mining area. Mineralogical analysis was conducted using X-Ray powder Diffraction (XRD). A thin section was prepared and analyzed under optical microscope. X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) was employed for the chemical analyses of major, mi-nor and trace elements. Environmental Scanning Electron Microscopy coupled with energy dispersive x-ray analysis system (ESEM-EDX) was also applied for the characterization of the sample. Forsterite (Mg-rich olivine) and enstatite (Mg-rich orthopyroxene) were the main mineral phases determined by XRD, with a 56% and 44% content respectively. Trace amounts of chromite spinels were also determined. Based on this characterization, the industrial rock proved to be a hartzburgite (a type of peridotite in petrological terms). Optical microscopy and ESEM-EDX provided similar observations and confirmed the above-mentioned results. XRF revealed a composition of 43.31 MgO, 44.25 SiO2, 9.98 Fe2O3, 1.40 CaO, 0.67 Al2O3, 0.22 MnO, 0.01 TiO2 and negligible amount of LOI (<0.1%). Trace elements with high concentrations were Cr (2678 ppm) and Ni (2044 ppm). The comprehensive characterization of this mining product suggested the suitability for various uses, such as refractories, foundry and slag conditioner. Additional experiments are being carried out for environmental applications, e.g. wastewater treatment.

Two methods are developed whereby; (1) mineralogic data can be arranged in order of typicality, and (2) mineralogic data external to a model can be compared with the model and the degrees of association computed. Thirty arbitrarily selected base metal mining districts in the conterminous United States were classified as copper, lead, or zinc districts on the basis of tonnage of the major base metal produced. For each of the copper, lead, and zinc districts binary-occurrence distributions were compiled for primary (unoxidized) and secondary (oxidized) minerals. Primary and secondary minerals were then arranged in order of decreasing typicality. Model copper districts are most typified by primary chalcopyrite, pyrite, and secondary malachite. Model lead districts are most typified by primary galena, quartz, pyrite, sphalerite, and secondary anglesite and cerargyrite. Model zinc districts are most typified by primary sphalerite, galena, pyrite, quartz, and secondary smithsonite and cerus-site. The Park City district was removed from the model and its primary and secondary mineralogy was compared with the model copper, lead, and zinc districts. The primary mineralogy of the Park City district is about equally associated with the model copper and lead districts, but the secondary mineralogy is much more akin to the model copper districts. Thus, with respect to the model data, the geochemical target presented by the Park City district resembles a copper district more closely than a lead district.

A subsystem-based approach to the characteristic curves for a multiple fan ventilation system is presented. The ventilation variables and their relationships associated with a fan branch are considered as a subsystem of the multiple fan system. For each subsystem, the solution curve is generated by replacing the fan with a hypothetical pressure source or, alternatively, by adding a hypothetical pressure source without removing the fan. The projection of the solution curve onto the coordinate planes results in two classes of subsystem characteristic curves: pressure-vs.-quantity and quantity-vs.-quantity. The subsystem characteristic curves are described and illustrated through example ventilation systems. These curves are also discussed using the network equations of a general multiple-fan system.

The concept of subsystem characteristic curves for multiple-fan ventilation networks is presented through the construction of characteristic curves for two-fan, series-parallel networks. By considering fans as the individual network branches, the multiple-fan network is viewed as consisting of two components: any one fan branch, which is called the reference fan branch, and its associated subsystem. Thus, F subsystems can be designated for the network with F fan branches. Each subsystem contains one or more fan branches. The subsystem characteristic curve is the pressure-vs.-quantity curve of the subsystem. As illustrated in the example networks, the subsystem characteristic curve is not a strictly increasing curve and does not pass through the origin. The intersection of the characteristic curves for the subsystem and the reference fan branch represents an operating point. Multiple intersections therefore represent multiple operating points.

Their intersection is the system operating point But wait a minute: Isn&apos;t head loss a negative number, a debit? And isn&apos;t fan head an energy addition, a credit? This, as every ventilation instructor knows, is often a stumbling block to student or audience comprehension. It is possible to use the intuitively correct curves -pressure losses as negative values and energy additions as positive values -and still obtain the correct operating point: adding the two curves produces a third curve that intersects the x-axis at the operating point, the point at \\tIich the fan energy input exactly matches air circulation energy loss. Using this technique also makes it easier to account for outside influences on the system, such as natural ventilating pressure; with the standard approach it is quite easy to add or subtract such influences to the wrong curve. This approach can be extended to the graphical solution of any series/parallel circuit or ventilation net\wrk. The results are the same, and the approach is logically consistent and less confusing.

Recent underground nuclear tests in tuff, alluvium, salt, and granite have yielded data essential to the evaluation of mining applications of contained nuclear detonations. The data indicate that for these media the cavity radius is predictable within ±20% without regard to the properties of the rock in the immediate shot environment. Properties of the chimney of broken rock resulting from collapse of the cavity, on the other hand, are found to be related to the properties of the rock and its preshot structural weaknesses. Seismic effects and radioactivity distribution are sufficiently documented to serve as a basis for predicting the safety conditions associated with detonations for a variety of yields.

The purpose of this paper is to bring to your attention the various kinds of high performance graphites available today, their characteristics and possible applications. These materials are products of a proprietary high temperature technology developed by Superior Graphite Company. We feel we have only begun to tap the potential of this technology and the utilization of the resulting products. During the course of the paper, we shall investigate high purity, high performance graphites made from raw materials such as mined natural graphites, synthetic graphites and petroleum derivatives. We shall define their characteristics and resulting benefits to current applications, along with applications currently under development. It is our desire to stimulate speculation and development of current high performance graphites and their applications as well as ideas for new high performance products and applications. First, a little background about the process. The technology was developed through a concentrated R&D effort which culminated in 1976 in the construction of a unique furnace capable of continuously processing tonnage quantities of granular carbons at temperatures in excess of 2,500 degrees C. This process is capable of refining various carbonaceous raw materials, including natural graphites, to levels of purity and consistency that were previously unattainable in commercial quantities. Carbon contents in excess of 99.9% are currently being produced on a continuous flow-through basis. Since beginning operation in 1977, this plant, located in Hopkinsville, KY, has been expanded in stages to its present capacity of producing over 45,000 tons of purified graphites and graphitic carbons per year. In addition to the purification process, the technology used allows the introduction of selected elements into the carbon/graphite structure to provide additional benefits. Elements of interest include boron, silicon, copper, iron and rare earths. The characteristics of and applications for some of these products will be discussed later.

Utilizing the recently developed laser velocimeter and a Pitot-static tube, the United States National Bureau of Standards (NBS), has calibrated various types of anemometers that are commonly used in the mining industry. This paper presents a summary of the performance characteristics including accuracy, precision, starting and stopping speeds of each instrument tested. The specific instruments that were calibrated by NBS have become Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) primary reference instruments. These primary reference instruments are used in turn to calibrate secondary reference instruments for each Coal Mine Safety and Health District. Each District calibrates anemometers that are used by District engineers and inspectors. Calibration is accomplished through a substitution procedure in which the reading on the anemometer is compared to the true velocity determined by the reference instrument. Calibration is performed over the entire range of the instrument using an open jet wind tunnel to produce the various approximate velocities. Some specific details of the calibration procedure are presented in this paper.

This paper provided an overview of characteristics of limonite ores as well as their influence on sintering performance. Evaluation experiments focusing on basic characteristics, granulation characteristics, and high temperature sintering characteristics had been conducted by using two types of limonite ores, then the principles of high effective utilization technology of limonite ores were discussed, and the sintering pot tests were conducted. Limonite ores possessed low total iron content, high combined water content, high SiO2 content, large average particle size, low adhering particles proportion, high porosity, high water absorption rate, short water absorbing time, poor granulation ability, high melt formation ability, low melt fluidity ability, low melt penetration ability, high melt absorption ability, low bonding phase strength, and high forming ability of SFCA. By taking the technical measures of ore-proportioning optimization, increasing the proportion of burntlime and segmentation granulation, the usage of limonite ores could reach 50% in sintering.

For more cost effective strata control, a fundamental understanding of the behavior of the support system is needed. To assist in this understanding for shield supports, behavior of a four-leg shield design used on a soft floor in an operating longwall system is presented. The shield was constructed having a split base and a split caving shield. Attention is focused on other-than-normal loading on the canopy and its effect on deformation of the lemniscate links. Examples of the typical bending and twisting deformations are given. Schematics of the canopy, caving shield, and lemniscates showing important forces and moments are presented. Approximate minimum values of the forces and moments are calculated. The need for use of more inclusive three-dimensional design techniques is demonstrated.
