THE DEVELOPMENT by the Iron Ore Company of Canada of the Quebec-Labrador mining project, which eventually led to 'Iron Ore in 1954', involved, from the start, several distinct undertakings. Among them, the most important were: The construction of a 360-mile railway, linking Knob Lake with Seven Islands. The erection of a railway terminal, and harbour facilities, at Seven Islands itself. The building of an entire townsite at Schefferville (formerly Knob Lake) The construction of two hydroelectric plants; and, finally, The development of a sufficient number of orebodies to enable a production of 10 to 15 million tons of ore a year. Since these phases of the project have already been the subject of previous discussions, this paper will not elaborate further on them but will rather concern itself with a brief outline of the Company's current mining practices.

"The Three Bluffs gold deposit is located in the Committee Bay greenstone belt, which forms part of the Rae domain of the western Churchill province, Nunavut, Canada. Gold mineralization is hosted by iron formation of the Neoarchean volcanosedimentary Prince Albert Group, and is associated with silicification (quartz veining) and sulfidation of magnetite and other Fe-rich minerals. Conventional U-Pb zircon dating of a conformable dacite unit within the volcanosedimentary host-rock sequence and a crosscutting diorite intrusion confirm a ~2.7 Ga age for deposition of the supracrustal package. U-Pb monazite dates and Pb isotopic analyses of sulfides were obtained by laser ablation-multicollector-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-MC-ICP-MS). A subset of U-Pb monazite (1813.8 ± 8.7 Ma) and Re-Os arsenopyrite (1822 ± 21 Ma) dates, combined with a Pb-Pb secondary errorchron age for pyrite and arsenopyrite (1829 ± 77 Ma), suggest that gold mineralization associated with sulfidation of the iron formation occurred at ~1815 Ma, prior to high-grade (upper amphibolite facies) tectonometamorphism in the Three Bluffs area (D2TB/(M2TB). An ~1815 Ma age for deposit formation is broadly consistent with evidence from elsewhere in the western Churchill province and to the southwest in Manitoba and Saskatchewan for a late Trans-Hudson (1.9-1.8 Ga) gold mineralizing event. The majority of U-Pb monazite ages form a second population at 1780.6 ± 4.2 Ma, similar to the age of the majority of Re-Os arsenopyrite analyses (1763 ± 11 Ma). These dates are thought to reflect the timing of peak M2TB metamorphism. 40Ar/39Ar dating of amphibole, biotite, and muscovite yielded plateau ages ranging from 1723.8 ± 9.0 Ma to 1710 ± 17 Ma, which are interpreted to record the timing of postpeak metamorphic cooling to below the respective closure temperatures for Ar diffusion in these minerals. Le gîte aurifère de Three Bluffs est situé dans la ceinture de roches vertes de Committee Bay, laquelle appartient au domaine de Rae dans l’ouest de la province de Churchill, au Nunavut, Canada. "Operator competency is an important factor in the safe and successful operation of today’s complex processes. Competent process unit operators deliver superior performance and results. In greenfield projects, operator competency is particularly critical, as the lack of specific operations experience must be offset with proven practical knowledge and skills to avoid mistakes that can cost millions in terms of start-up delays, production losses and equipment damage. It is, therefore, important to know precisely what competencies are required for a project or site, and what any gaps in operator competency need to be addressed and improved. The success of plant commissioning, start-up and sustainable operations is directly tied to operator competency. The significant investments required for new projects, the exploitation of more challenging ore bodies, and the increasing complexity of plant operations have placed renewed emphasis on the need for competent operators. Furthermore, many large capital projects are being developed in remote regions, often with ties to the delivery of social benefits for the local population in terms of jobs, training and other development opportunities. While automation and processing technologies have helped do more with less, indicators now point to a bottleneck in human performance limiting operational results.Automation industry development in managing abnormal situations, including solutions for simulation and operator training, has produced applications to provide customized and flexible training methods. This paper will discuss tools to automate the operator competency process in order to guide trainers to effectively teach, measure, control, provide feedback, and monitor operator skills. Today’s competency management solutions can be effectively applied throughout the course of an operator’s professional life, as a guide to hiring new operators, for developing competencies to support operations, and also to develop and refine best practices and share lessons learned."

"AS THE TITLE implies, this paper will deal with the unusual rather than the standard practices as employed . at the property of North Rankin Nickel Mines, Limited. Fortunately •the mining, with the exception of permafrost conditions, and the milling practices, are the normal approaches dictated by the size, type, and character of the orebody. The unusual aspects are linked directly or indirectly to the isolated location and are •principally ancillary requirements or services covering a broad range from climate to supplies and from finance to entertainment. It is our intent to cover the more salient points of interest together with a brief description of the general operation.To understand the primary motivation of the mine, it must be made clear that North Rankin was conceived as a foothold in the Canadian North, that region embracing 40 per cent of the Dominion which ex-tends north of the commercial tree-line and which includes nearly 50 per cent of the Precambrian Shield, our mainstay of Canadian mining. Secondly, this project was born in an atmosphere of premium sales in the nickel markets, assuring a rapid pay-back of the heavy •capital expenditures. And finally, it has •been coddled through the stark reality of a competitive metal market with the hope and trust that the experiences and achievements will lead over the bill to a bigger and better mine in this virgin territory. This is the briefest story of the mine's history, but it pays tribute to the many people who, in thirty years since .discovery, have championed this project."

Prior to 2006, the filtration unit for leached sludge treatment (filter press) permitted the filtration, washing and drying of cake to 17% (w/w) moisture. That year saw moisture content abruptly increase to 20% (w/w), drastically changing the rheological properties of the cake. The cake became sticky and agglomerated. This led to major disruptions of operations and plant capacity (cake release and cake conveyor problems, complicating the subsequent steps of the process). The conditions for the filtration, washing and drying, were simulated to ease cake unloading without aggravating dust emissions (moisture about 17% (w/w)). All of the laboratory tests yielded a moisture content above 17% (w/w). Therefore, we concluded that the moisture problems were not due to a recipe change in primary material, but to an operational problem in the filter press. Through the laboratory results, the filter press operating conditions (washing ratio, drying pressure and drying time) were optimized to enable a reduction in cake moisture to 17% (w/w).

"Tough economical conditions and high grade but fine-grained ore processing have forced the mining industry to look for more efficient processes. Isa Mill Technology for ultra-fine and fine grinding is one such process employed at several mining operations in Australia including Mount Isa Mines Limited in Australia. Mount Isa Mines is a business unit of MIM Holdings Limited. MIM is an Australian-based international mining and mineral processing company with around 8000 employees worldwide. Major products include copper, gold, zinc-lead-silver, coal and technology sales.The Isa Mill is a horizontal stirred mill with sizes up to 3 m3 chamber net volume and 1 120 kW installed motor. It was jointly invented by Mount Isa Mines of Australia and Netzsch Feinmahltecknik GmbH of Germany for ultra-fine and fine grinding duties in the minerals industry. Isa Mill operations started in 1994 at the Mount Isa Mines Leadzinc Concentrator and then at MIM’s McArthur River Mine in 1995. These Isa Mills have been used to liberate sphalerite and galena at Mount Isa and silica at McArthur River by grinding to less than 7 micron.This paper discusses the Isa Mill Technology and reports on the metallurgical performance of the Isa Mills at Mount Isa Mines, including work done over the last 9 years to improve mill design, process efficiency and maintenance, which has resulted in the current state-of-the-art Isa Mill Technology.INTRODUCTIONThe current leadzinc deposits at Mount Isa Mines (George Fisher, Hilton and Isa) have an average grade of 10.5% zinc, 7.2% lead and 165g/t silver. Fine grinding, in particular in the zinc retreatment circuit requiring a milled product P80 of 7 micron, is essential to treat the ores from the Mount Isa Mines deposits. Every one micron size reduction in the zinc retreatment circuit below a P80 of 10 micron improves the overall plant zinc recovery by 1%, resulting in an increase in revenue of about 1 million dollars per annum."

Engineers and scientists have been combating the attack upon refractory materials of molten metals/matte and slags for hundreds of years. The details in many cases are still questionable or at least debatable. The corrosion is a major concern for furnace operators as refractory wear or failures inevitably results in reduced production efficiency and furnace reliability. Also the cost to industry is considerable and only a thorough understanding of all the complexities of the process will help to minimize that cost. One of the critical questions to overcome is the correct selection of refractories for the individual process steps to provide long and predictable refractory life together with high furnace availability. To understand the nature of the reactions involved in refractory corrosion, it is crucial to determine the complex thermo- chemical equilibria of the reactions occurring between the refractory materials and the process phases. A simulation model coupled with commercial software like FactSageTM is demonstrated aiming to understand the corrosion mechanisms between refractories and the molten process phases and draw implications for improving the performance of refractories and refractory lifetime. INTRODUCTION The extraction or recycling of valuable materials, e.g. metals, can be done by two main routes, pyro- and/or hydrometallurgical processing, depending on the chemical behavior of the used ore, scrap or pre-treated concentrate. Sometimes it is also necessary to use both process routes for the extraction or the recycling of valuable materials. In the case of a pyrometallurgical treatment, the usage of refractory materials is inevitable. This is mainly caused by high temperatures, prevailing during processing. The interaction between refractory material and slag, metal or matte leads to different reactions and interactions. As a main result corrosion of the furnace lining (refractory material) takes place. Hence, recurring furnace shutdowns occur for renewing the refractories. This leads to reduced production efficiency. Such refractory lifetimes are between some hours and decades, depending on the processes.

Years before iron and steel works were established at Sydney, several thriving although short-lived iron works operated in Nova Scotia. These furnaces reflected the general nineteenth-century North American experience with iron works. At the beginning of the century, small furnaces struggled to supply local needs. Charcoal was the principal fuel and water powered most furnace equipment. By the end of the century, a few huge primary iron and steel works dominated production for Nova Scotia and the rest of Canada. Two sites achieved prominence in the nineteenthcentury Nova Scotia iron industry: Londonderry and Ferrona (Fig. 1). Londonderry, the larger and longerlasting of the two sites, is today a small village on the south flank of the Cobequid Mountains, about 30 km west of Truro. Prior to the establishment of an iron works in 1849, no community existed. At the peak of operation in the 1880s, however, over 2600 people were located there. The second site, Ferrona, today is a mere crossroads on the map, about 10 km south of New Glasgow. Following the construction of a blast furnace there in 1892, a small village grew up around the furnace. But once the furnace was blown out in 1904, the population gradually drifted away.

"The H.B. Mine, a zinc-lead operation of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company of Canada Limited (Cominco), is in south central British Columbia, on Sheep Creek, a west-flowing branch of the Salmon River. It is 3 miles by road from B.C. highway No. 6, 30 miles south of Nelson, B.C., with an excellent highway connection to the smelter city of Trail, 35 miles from the mine. The nearest permanent settlement is the village of Salmo, 7 miles distant by road. The mine is situated along a belt containing other important zinc-lead deposits, including those of the Canadian Exploration Company, 3 miles to the south, and the Reeves MacDonald mine, 9 miles distant again to the southwest.Deeply oxidized outcrops were located in 1907 on the north side of Sheep Creek valley by two prospectors named Horton and Benson. The property was given the name H.B., after the two discoverers, and there commenced a long and intermittent series of mining operations designed mainly to develop and extract oxidized lead-zinc ore. In 1925 a determined attempt was made by a British syndicate to develop a large tonnage of sulphide ore, but this ended in failure after some 3,000 feet of lateral development had been done. In 1927 Cominco acquired the mine, but it lay idle until 1946 when a geological study was followed by a program of surface drilling which encountered extensive sulphide mineralization. An underground development program revealed more details of the deposit, and sufficient ore was found to warrant construction of a 1,000-ton mill. Mine preparation and mill construction were completed by early 1953, but production was deferred due to low metal prices. The mine was finally brought into production early in 1955."

"In recent years the recovery of copper from low grade oxide ores has received widespread attention. The cost of treating such ores using conventional technology, such as milling and flotation, is frequently prohibitively high and copper recovery is generally low. The introduction of heap leaching, solvent extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) has resulted in high recoveries, good copper cathode quality and low production costs. This technology has now been successfully applied on a worldwide basis.This paper reviews the various process and design options and gives approximate capital and operating costs for a 1.0% copper ore.INTRODUCTIONAs a result of the low copper prices that prevailed for much of the last two decades, aggressive attempts were made by the industry to cut operating costs. Under such circumstances heap leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning, to recover low cost copper from oxide ores, has received particular attention and ultimately widespread acceptance.Low grade copper ore (typically containing less than 1.0% Cu), which could not be economically treated by other methods, is placed on heaps and leached with dilute solutions of sulphuric acid. The copper rich, pregnant solution, drains from the heap into a collecting pond and is pumped to a solvent extraction plant where it is purified and upgraded. The resulting solution, termed the pregnant electrolyte, passes to the electrowinning section where the copper is recovered as high grade cathodes and sulphuric acid is regenerated, (Figure 1).This paper specifically describes the processing of copper oxides. Other copper minerals such as chalcocite and chrysocolla are also leached by dilute solutions of sulphuric acid. In practice the oxide minerals are frequently associated to varying degrees with less easily leached sulphides, such as chalcopyrite. In some cases, once the oxidized capping of the ore body is removed, the oxides are totally replaced by more refractory sulphides. Under these circumstances the leaching recovery is significantly reduced. However the principles described here for solvent extraction and electrowinning are also applicable to solutions received from heaps containing sulphide minerals, which are leached more slowly and involve bacterially induced reactions."

Gold catalysts based on different supports, titania, zirconia, ceria and mesoporous titania and zirconia, nonpromoted and promoted by vanadia in the reaction of complete benzene oxidation have been studied. XRD, HRTEM, TPR, Raman and ESR spectroscopy were applied for the characterization of the catalysts. The influence of gold on the reduction behavior, state and structure of vanadia on the surface was studied, as well as the role of supports nature on the properties and catalytic activity. A strong synergistic effect between gold and vanadia was observed for the all studied catalysts with an exception of the catalysts supported on mesoporous zirconia. In the last case the catalysts containing gold and gold-vanadia exhibit high and equal catalytic activity. The catalysts on ceria show highest and stable catalytic activity in the studied reaction among the all studied catalysts.

"It is quite likely that more than a handful of junior exploration companies will receive some startling news from their accountants this spring when 1989s tax returns are being prepared. These companies could find that, for the first time ever, they will have to write a cheque to the federal government on account of a new federal capital tax which became effective July I, 1989IntroductionMany mining companies which have never had to pay a federal income tax are finding that they indeed have a tax liability for 1989. Non-producing companies, such as junior exploration companies, almost automatically assume that they don't have to pay any income tax. But, a new tax imposed under the Income Tax Act catches especially the company that has no income.Effective July 1, 1989, a federal capital tax (some call it a corporation minimum tax) is payable by any corporate carrying on business in Canada where the corporation has ""taxable capital"" exceeding $10 million. As a result of the popular use of flow-through shares in recent years, many junior exploration companies are finding that their balance sheets show capital stock over $10 million, and that they are consequently caught by the new tax. Further, some of these companies are finding, to their chagrin, that the tax for 1989 was due on February 28, 1990, and that non-deductible interest is ticking away on unpaid taxes."

For the last few years, a new and innovative technique has been successfully used to determine refractory and castable thickness in various metallurgical vessels. The acousto ultrasonic-echo (AU-E) technique uses stress waves to detect metal penetration and delaminations within refractory linings. In addition, it is capable of measuring the thickness of refractory layers and build-up material. The inspection and measurements can be carried out while the furnace is in full operation. The present paper discusses the principles of the AU-E technique, and its advantages and limitations. A number of case studies are presented to demonstrate various capabilities of this new Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) technique.

"The Cumberland Basin of Nova Scotia has long been considered a structural basin by virtue of the elliptical outcrop and inward dip pattern of the Pennsylvanian outcrops. Recent published and unpublished data indicate that subsidence began in the late Devonian, perhaps resulting from a graben or rift. The Mississippian sediments which filled the growing depression were continental, lacustrine and marine with evaporites. The cessation of the riftforming processes is recorded by the alluvial swamp-type sediments of the Pennsylvanian which filled the depression. In excess of 25,000 feet of Carboniferous rocks are believed to be present in the deepest part of the Basin. Starting with the rift hypothesis, we can speculate on the kinds of sediments, their location and the structural features present beneath the Pennsylvanian surface. Using surface exposures and a limited amount of subsurface data, we theorize that (1) the Mississippian evaporites acted as glide zones which effectively divided the Basin into two horizontal structural layers. The rocks above the evaporites, responding to Appalachian stresses, formed the long diapiric folds with cores of overthickened evaporites. Below the evaporites the structures are related to movements of the rift floor, compaction closures and structures formed by differential horizontal movements of the rift walls. (2) The rift, in its deeper parts, will have more and a greater variety of marine rocks than the outcrops indicate. Should the rift hypothesis be correct, the possibility of finding hydrocarbons is enhanced."

"The Noranda Continuous Smelting Process at the Home smelter was commissioned in March 1973. The ability of the process to handle a wide variety of feed materials and a steady stream of technical innovations in recent decades has served to maintain the Home as an efficient and versatile custom smelter. This paper reviews recent technological development and capabilities in areas such as sampling and preparation of secondary and complex materials, as well as the smelting and related environmental control issues. Future trends and improvements are also addressed.IntroductionThe Noranda Home smelter commenced operations in 1927. It was originally designed to treat 910 tonnes per day of copper concentrates and ores coming from the new Home mine site. In the 19305, the company opened its doors to other mines in northwestern Quebec. Treatment of feed materials on a custom basis has, therefore, always been an important factor in the operation of the Home smelter. Throughout the years, the Home gradually increased its custom smelting capacity, while maintaining its production from the Home mine. By the early 1950s, 65% of the materials processed was from outside customers, and by 1974, this figure had increased to more than 85% . With the closure of the Home mine in 1976, the company extended its smelting operations beyond ore and concentrate, and began to treat more scrap metals and residues rich in copper and precious metal content.Corresponding with the ever-changing pattern of feed sources, the Home smelter has adopted technological improvements to meet new and challenging business conditions. The technology of the original smelter of 1927has been completely replaced over the years in the quest for improvement. One of these major changes occurred in 1973 with the start-up of the Noranda Process Reactor. This extremely efficient smelting system has been exploited to treat a wide variety of copper and precious metal (PM) containing custom materials. This paper reviews recent developments and improvements achieved at the Home smelter, in the receiving, sampling and treatments of copper and PM scrap and secondaries, with particular emphasis on the development of new technology and equipment in complex feed materials treatment."

"Solvent extraction is the one of the most common techniques for recovering metal ions from aqueous systems. However, it is not efficient in the extraction of low concentration metal ions from aqueous solutions. Predispersed solvent extraction (PDSE) is an alternative method for solvent extraction which implies colloidal liquid aphrons as extracting agents in order to reach higher interfacial area and lower reagent consumption. This work investigated important parameters in PDSE of nickel ions from dilute aqueous solutions by fractional factorial design of experiments. Four experimental parameters, the initial extractant concentration, initial surfactant concentration, equilibrium pH and phase volume ratio (organic to aqueous ratio) were investigated. The important parameters were determined as well as important interactions between these parameters. It was found that extractant concentration, phase volume ratio, and equilibrium pH are the most significant experimental parameters. It is one of the most important metals produced by Canada which is in the five top nickel producers in the world. Despite a 24% decrease in the nickel prices from 2011 to 2014 the nickel global mine production increased by 36% between these years (U.S. Geological Survey, 2015; Nickel - Statista Dossier, 2015), which shows the increasing demand for nickel. This high demand leads producers to consider the production of nickel from low grade ores and other secondary sources such as process wastewaters. The removal of nickel ions from process wastewater is also important due to environmental considerations. Nickel is known to be a human carcinogen and it may cause serious lung and kidney problems, pulmonary fibrosis, gastrointestinal distress, and skin dermatitis if it exceeds the critical level (Borba et al., 2006; Fu & Wang, 2011)."

On November 16, 1978, Finance Minister Chretien delivered his second formal budget in the House of Commons. Over-all, the provisions of the budget should provide moderate stimulus to the Canadian economy. With respect to the mining industry, the budget offers some welcome changes in the form of' improved write-offs for development expenses and social assets; higher investment tax credits; and a reduction in federal sales tax. On the other hand, income bond financing of new mineral ventures may be restricted.

"As real estate for new development in urban settings becomes scarce, commercial high rises are being constructed above open passenger rail tracks and vehicular roadways. Rail and roadway overbuilds are treated as tunnels requiring emergency ventilation systems for train or automobile and truck fires. The value of floor space in residential and office towers poses challenges to engineers responsible for designing fan rooms and shafts for tunnel ventilation systems within the towers. This paper describes a case study of the unique incorporation of tunnel ventilation fan plants in the overbuild structure of a passenger railyard and an adjacent roadway.INTRODUCTIONTunnel ventilation systems are required for passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels by the NFPA 130 Standard for Fixed Guideway Transit and Passenger Rail Systems, and the NFPA 502 Standard for Road Tunnels, Bridges, and Other Limited Access Highways requires tunnel ventilation systems for vehicular (road) tunnels. Passenger rail and transit (subway) tunnels are typically ventilated with a series of shafts placed longitudinally along the tunnels to provide piston relief for normal train operations and emergency ventilation of train fires utilizing reversible axial flow fans. The shafts are incorporated in dedicated ventilation buildings that house the tunnel ventilation fans and starters, switchgear to power the fans and other equipment and systems in the building, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) to control fan operation with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software, and HVAC fans and ductwork to ventilate the spaces in the building. These ventilation buildings may also provide access to the tunnels below with ingress/egress stairs for use by first responders and firefighters entering the tunnels and train or transit system passengers exiting the tunnels in an emergency. A photograph of a passenger rail ventilation building that encompasses four tunnels is shown in Figure 1."
