Kaiser Resources Ltd. owns and operates a 5-million-tonper- year open-pit and hydraulic coal mine near Sparwood in southeastern British Columbia. Since 1969, Kaiser has maintained a field-scale reclamation program dedicated to the reclamation of disturbances associated with past and present mining and exploration activities . Since that time, over 1400 acres have been treated using modified forestry and agricultural techniques with encouraging results.

In the this study, surface segregation of Mg and Ca with Mg addition range from 5 to 10wt% in Al-Mg alloys with Mg+Al2Ca master alloy and its effect on the oxidation resistance were investigated. The addition of Mg+Al2Ca master alloy as the Mg alloying element led to the surface enrichment of Mg and Ca during high temperature oxidation. As a result of the oxidation test by TGA, the oxidation resistance of all the examined alloys was significantly improved with increasing Al2Ca content. The weight change of Al2Ca added Al-5Mg and Al-7.5Mg alloys indicated the complete oxidation resistance during the whole oxidation test time, while a slight weight increase was shown in the case of Al-Mg alloys even with Al2Ca addition. The improvement of the oxidation resistance in Al2Ca added alloys may be attributed to the formation of the protective oxide layer mixed with CaO and MgO on the surface.

"The objectives of the Wabush Mines tailings stabilization program are to control dust Ii/t-off and to rehabilitate the disposal area. The evolution of the program started with test plots in 1970, these being continued and expanded upon through 1974. In 1976, a 35-acre vegetation field trial was attempted and failed, part of the failure being attributed to lack of adequate equipment. Subsequently, equipment was purchased and during the summer of 1979-80 extensive areas were treated. The program was also expanded to include the evaluation of chemical and water spray stabilization versus vegetation in areas where shorter-term control is required. In addition, during the summers of 1979-80, spruce bog material was spread over about 100 acres and seeded.The approach to reclamation by vegetation at Wabush is one of soil building. Work to this point indicates that iron ore tailings can be converted to a soil capable of supporting plants. Plans for the Wabush tailings disposal area should make dust lift-off from inactive tailings areas negligible within the next few years."

MINE operators are concerned with temperature conditions in their mines, particularly the effects of high temperatures on the l1ealth and efficiency of tl1eir employees. This paper is written to focus attention on the variables of heat transfer between rock and air. It illustrates the difficulties of predicting the manner, and the extent, of heat transfer from theoretical concepts, prior to actual operation of a mine airway. There are ~1any sources of heat in mines. The most important is that of the rock surrounding the airway. This heat, in turn, is a product of the age of the rock, faulting, proximity to recent igneous activity, oxidation of sulphides, hot ground waters, etc. The sources of heat may be constant for any one mine, but they are far from constant when dealing with various mining districts or e1•en with a number of mines in the same district. "The Matheson area of northeastern Ontario is of great interest for mineral exploration because of its geological similarities with the adjacent Timmins, Kirkland Lake and Larder Lake gold camps. Exploration in the area, however, is hampered by the presence of an extensive and thick cover of glacial sediments. For this reason, till geochemistry has become an important exploration method. The Ontario Geological Survey&apos;s Black River-Matheson (BRiM) reconnaissance till sampling project, carried out between 1984 and 1988, was designed to aid exploration in the Matheson area by documenting the Quaternary stratigraphy and providing a database of till geochemistry. Till samples were collected by backhoe trenching of surface pits in areas of thin drift (< 5 m) and by sonic overburden drilling in areas of thicker drift. This paper summarizes the results from the shallow till sampling component of the BRiM project.Two hundred and eighty-two surface samples were collected from Matheson Till, the youngest till sheet in the area, which was deposited during the Late Wisconsinan. For each sample, the non-magnetic heavy mineral (> 3.3 S.G.) and fine (- 250 mesh) till fractions were analyzed geochemically. In addition, visible gold grains were recovered by panning the heavy mineral fraction. Five areas that display multi-element anomalies in both till fractions warrant further investigation: (1) western Egan Township, overlying the Bradley Lake Syenite; (2) around and south of the Munro and Croesus mines, in Munro and Guibord townships; (3) central Garrison Township overlying the Garrison Stock; (4) south of Ore Car Lake in northern Thackeray Township; and (5) southeastern Harker Township. In these areas, Matheson Till has a local provenance and the bedrock sources for these anomalies are nearby in the up-ice (north northwest) direction. Due to the fine-grained nature of gold in bedrock deposits in the BRiM area, the small size of most gold grains recovered from till samples (< 50 um) and the variable distribution of gold in the heavy mineral concentrate and fine fractions, the fine fraction in addition to the more commonly used heavy mineral concentrate should be used for gold exploration.Surface till samples have been affected by weathering to a depth of = 3 m. Weathered till is characterized by a very low carbonate content in the matrix fraction, the absence of sulfide grains in the heavy mineral concentrate and higher concentrations of copper, nickel and zinc in the fine fraction than in the heavy mineral concentrate. As a result of the weathered/ oxidized nature of the surface till samples, the fine fraction is a better sampling medium for base metal exploration."

As part of a general review on study of surfactant blinding agents to improve gold recovery during cyanide leaching of carbonaceous gold ores, processes of CIL and RIL leaching using surfactants were investigated. When refractory ores were treated by surfactants, CIL and RIL leaching processes yielded significant improvement on gold recovery. This paper will discuss and compare the laboratory results from two different leaching processes on preg-robbing ores, as well as, illustrate the difference of potential fouling of the blinding agents on activated carbon and resins.

Gold-on-carbon catalysts resulted very active and selective in liquid phase oxidation [1, 2, 3] and during past studies we established that activity is ruled by two factors: particle dimension and gold exposure on the carbon surface [4]. These two parameters are also connected to the nature of activated carbon where the chemical nature of the surface oxygenated groups probably plays an important role [5]. Our studies, focused on the design of an active gold-on-carbon catalyst for liquid phase application, were aimed, operating a fine tuning of all the parameters involved in determining activity, to optimize gold-on-carbon preparation, keeping in mind that gold particle activity increases with decreasing particle size and increasing gold exposure. Gold sol immobilisation represents a versatile methodology in preparing gold catalysts [6]: throughout this work we used as sol stabilizing agent, the N-dodecil-N,N-dimethyl-3-amino-1-propan sulphonate (SB), that provides both sterical and electrostatic stabilisation, a condition we already demonstrated necessary to preserve particle dimension when carbon is used as the support [6]. We generated different gold sols by varying the relative amount of reagents (HAuCl4, SB, NaBH4), the type of alkali and the temperature of the gold precursor reduction. Moreover, as we had recently evidenced that there is also a carbon effect [5], we employed only one active carbon to immobilize the sols.

"Samples from seven test wells distributed throughout the surface-mineable area of the Athabasca Oil Sands have been evaluated to determine the amounts of heavy minerals present and the titanium and zirconium contents. The samples were treated to yield the size distribution of the titanium and zirconium minerals as well as their spatial distribution. The study has shown that heavy minerals are found throughout the surface-mineable area; concentrations range from 0.24 to 2.29 per cent (by weight), with a mean of 1.02 per cent. Titanium and zirconium contents vary throughout the area, and are found preferentially in the finer size fractions. •on the basis of preliminary calculations, the tailings streams from an oil sands plant would provide sufficient feed for a large-scale titanium pigment plant, and the tailings from one plant would provide sufficient zircon feed to satisfy Canadian demand for. metallic zirconium. Variability of the heavy mineral content and composition is such that the heavy mineral potential must be evaluated in detail for each mine site."

"A survey of 925 mineral property transactions worldwide was carried out between 1987 and 2004. These mineral properties with reported Mineral Resources include 457 gold properties, 322 base metal properties, and five platinum group element (PGE) properties. Based on constant Canadian dollars, the results of the survey indicate that:• In general, unit metal values in the ground (e.g. $/oz Au or $/lb Cu) have kept pace with the changes in the respective metal prices during the period of the survey.• A general decrease in unit gold values in the ground has occurred from about $57/oz Au in 1987 to about $11/oz Au in 2002 for Canadian mineral properties, with the exception of a peak of $58/oz Au in 1996.• A similar trend for mineral properties has occurred in the United States, but with lower unit values, in the range from $1/oz Au to $10/oz Au during the last three years of the survey. • Unit metal values in the ground for gold properties in Canada were higher than for those in the rest of the world.• Unit metal values in the ground for copper properties in Canada were in the mid-range compared with other countries in the rest of the world; the United States and Australia were higher and Latin America, Asia, Africa, and Europe were lower than in Canada.• Unit metal values in the ground for zinc properties in Canada were also in the mid-range compared with other countries in the rest of the world; Latin America and Europe were higher and the United States, Australia, and Asia were lower than in Canada.• Unit metal values for nickel properties in Canada were highest compared with other countries in the rest of the world, followed by the United States, Australia, Africa, and Asia.• Gold values in the ground in Canada have ranged from 6% to 14% (with an average of approximately 10%) of the gold price.• The unit values of base metals in the ground have been in the order of 2% of the quoted metal price, during the period of the survey."

"The main solution, ore and residue pulp streams in the Rio Algom Quirke I uranium mill at Elliot Lake have been sampled and analyzed for radium-226. Analysis of the ore and leached residues indicates that Ra-226 dissolves and precipitates within the first pachuca tank. A maximum of approximately 0.2% of the Ra-226 in the ore remains in solution during leaching.IntroductionConcern over the acid drainage and radionuclide dissolution problems associated with uranium tailings disposal sites in Canada has prompted investigation into methods for improving current uranium processing practice.Present commercial practice usually involves leaching of the uranium ore with sulphuric acid, ion-exchange separation of the uranyl sulphate complex from the leach liquor and"" precipitation of the uranium as yellowcake. Daughter products of U-238, such as Th-230, Pb-21O and Ra-226 remain with the tailings and undergo long-term dissolution.Table I summarizes the probable behaviour of the radionuclides during milling. The concern here is with Ra-226, because it will deposit in the bones if ingested and is ""thus considered a serious health hazard(1), Similarly, Po-218 and Bi-214, which are daughter products of Rn-222, can be retained in the lungs and are considered to be the principal sources of radiation dosage(2) arising from the inhalation of Rn-222. Previous investigations(3-9l indicate or imply that Ra-226 undergoes redistribution during milling. However, detailed published information on the behaviour of Ra-226 in the uranium milling process appears to be lacking. A knowledge of the behaviour of Ra-226 in uranium mills, particularly during leaching, could lead to improved methods for its control.This paper reports the occurrence of Ra-226 in the Rio Algom mill. The main objectives of the study were to determine (1) the distribution of Ra-226 within the solids, (2) at what point, and how rapidly, redistribution occurs and (3) whether there are high concentrations of Ra-226 in solution."

"The present large-scale use of energy and power by the human species represents a unique event in the billions of years of geologic history. Furthermore, in magnitude, most of the development has occurred during the present century. In the United States, the peak in the rate of petroleum production occurred in 1970 and that for natural gas is imminent. The peak in the world production of crude oil is expected to occur at about the year 2000 and that for coal production at about 2150 or 2200. For other sources of energy and power, water power, geothermal power and tidal power are inadequate to replace power from fossil fuels. Nuclear power, based on the breeder reactor and utilizing lowgrade deposits of uranium and thorium, has a larger potential than the fossil fuels, but it also constitutes a large perpetual hazard. The largest source of energy available to the earth is solar radiation. This source has a life-expectancy of a geologic time scale, is nonpolluting and is larger in magnitude than any likely requirements by the human s pecies. In consequence of the large supplies of available energy, the period since 1800 has been one of an unprecedented exponential industrial growth. This also has been accompanied by a world-wide ecological disturbance, including that of the human population. It can easily be seen that such a period of growth must be ephemeral in character and, in fact, is now almost over. One aspect of this transition from a state of exponential growth to a state of nongrowth is the present alarm over an ""energy crisis."" Actually, the world's present problems are by no means unmanageable in terms of present biological and technological knowledge. The real crisis confronting us is, therefore, not an energy crisis but a cultural crisis. During the last two centuries, we have evalved what amounts to an exponential- growth culture, with institutions based on the premise of an indefinite continuation of exponential growth. One of the principal consequences of the cessation of exponential growth will be an inevitable revision of some of the tenets of that culture."

"In June 1983, the Computer Applications and Process Control Committee (CAPC) of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (CIM) circulated a questionnaire to coal mining, exploration and consulting companies in Canada to determine the industry&apos;s level of interest in holding a workshop-style meeting to introduce company personnel to ""state-of-the-art "" computer systems designed to carry out specific technical and management junctions. It was necessary to conduct the survey to determine the specific fields of application and the nature of training which are of most interest.Almost universally, the companies expressed interest in computer workshops and training for applications in the Canadian coal industry. The survey showed that all categories of personnel felt the need for some sort of training. Areas of specific interest identified were: exploration and geology, mine design, reserve calculations, coal mining technology, coal preparation, rock mechanics, ventilation, financial planning, and process simulation. The details of this survey together with an assessment of the significance of computer applications in the Canadian coal industry are presented in this paper."

Building Information Modeling (BIM) has been gaining a significant edge in the construction industry over the last decade. BIM allows gathering all building information in one shared database that can help all construction entities better understand, integrate and visualize all work progress from inception to operation of the building. The main purpose behind BIM is to bring all project participants together (Client, Architect, Contractor, Consultant) since the initial stages of a project allowing them to cooperate and work as a team in the promise of an increased productivity, reduced cost, enhanced quality and faster delivery. However, a full-fledged implementation of BIM tools and benefits is not yet achieved in the construction industry and remains a debatable issue for researchers and practitioners in the construction field. This paper aims at assessing BIM awareness and usage in the Lebanese construction industry through conducting interviews with contractors, architects and consultants that are key players in the Lebanese market. A comprehensive literature review about BIM adoption in some developed countries and in the surrounding region is also provided in order to better evaluate the Lebanese industry status in comparison with foreign industries. This research sheds the light on BIM awareness of the different construction parties in the Lebanese market, assesses the extent of its current use, identifies the pertaining implementation challenges, and provides recommendations to enhance BIM role in the Lebanese construction industry.

The copper-zinc orebody at Sherritt Gordon&apos;s Ruttan Mine occurs in a structurally complex area of the Rusty Lake greenstone belt in northern Manitoba. Problems in interpreting drill results indicated a large deviation, and the structural complexity an erratic deviation, of drill holes. This was confirmed when a surface hole was intersected 420 feet to the left of line on the 800 level. This problem acted as a catalyst in promoting a search for a suitable down-hole survey method. The instruments investigated included magnetic multishot and gyroscopic units as well as the ABEM Reflex-Fotobor. Only the Fotobor came close to meeting the company&apos;s needs of simplicity, reliability, accuracy and ownership. In this paper, the methods of operating this instrument, as well as the data extraction and reduction techniques, are described. Data on the accuracy and repeatability of the instrument are presented, and a tabular presentation of the results of surveying on 86 holes totalling 64,000 feet of drilling is made. Preliminary statements of the results of ongoing research on causes of hole deviation are presented and recommendations for minimizing deviation are given. The use of the survey device is recommended in areas of structural complexity, for very steep or backsight holes and where expected ore intersections are missing.

Great Bear lake, the fourth largest body of water on this continent, comprises an area of approximately 12,000 square miles, and is set astride the Arctic circle, with a large portion of it witnessing both the Arctic winter night, and the Arctic summer day with its midnight sun. The very name itself, Great Bear, suggests an Arctic region. The seasonal contrasts at Great Bear lake are very marked by the cold and darkness of winter, and the warmth and brightness of summer. Signs of winter such as low clouds, snow, sleet, fog, and night frosts, generally appear the latter part of August, while ice forming on bays during the last two weeks in September ends boat travel on the lake about September 30th.Early in June the ice leaves the river mouths, during the last ten days of the month it disappears from small bays, and at some time during the last two weeks of July the main body of the lake becomes navigable. In 1916, the ice disappeared earlier than usual, and the lake was navigable on July 5th. Great Bear river generally breaks up about June 1st, but, on account of ice cliffs and floes, it is not navigable with safety until early in July. Even then, the traveller is confronted with the Charles rapids, but these might be overcome by a wagon or motor road, such as the one from Fitzgerald to Fort Smith: However, in 1931, Mr. A. W. Boland, Fort Norman, N.W.T., carried with scow and motorboat practically all freight between Fort Norman and LaBine point and Hunter bay, at the east end of the lake. During July and August, two types of clothing are required, for, although the days are mainly ones of warm sunshine, the nights are cloudy and cold. In the winter season, fur clothing is used exclusively. Considerable timber, mainly white spruce, suitable for fuel and building purposes, borders the lake and extends eastward to the Coppermine river. North of the lake, no timber is found except in the river valleys, but with oil and coal possibilities near Fort Norman, the fuel situation might be solved.

"The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) operations in Labrador and Quebec, in Canada, is among the largest openpit mining complexes on a world wide basis. Since the 1981-82 recession, IOC has embarked on a comprehensive cost reduction and productivity improvement program in order to survive in the world iron ore market.This paper will outline the approach used in prioritizing the cost reduction items.IntroductionMuch of the mining industry in North America is in a crisis state. Most producers are operating at production levels well below capacity, some have been merged or sold, while others have been mothballed or closed permanently. For many of us still operating, the future is uncertain. Despite the many cutbacks and closures, there is still an abundant supply of minerals in the world market and there is almost no hope for any relief on price pressures on most mineral commodities in the near future. The Iron Ore Company of Canada (IOC) operates an iron ore mine, a concentrator and a pellet plant known as the Carol Project located in Labrador City, Newfoundland. This concentrator and the pellet plant have the annual capacity to produce 20 million and 10 million tons respectively. A company owned and operated railway links this operation with the dock terminal facilities in Sept-Iles, Quebec.In the past decade the Iron Ore Company of Canada has been one of the largest producers of iron ore products in the world. Its pellets and concentrates as well as natural ores were sold in North America, Europe and the Far East. In 1981-82, sales, particularly in North America, went into a serious decline. For almost 30 years, the gospel IOC preached to employees was ""production, production!"" There were many innovations, and millions of dollars were spent on the biggest and best equipment, on research and development, on training and developing employees."

Comme la réglementation environnementale est de plus en plus nombreuse, ces dernières années, cette présentation vise à exposer les principaux cadres provinciaux et fédéraux actuellement en application au Québec pour le secteur minier et à en dégager les particularités. ABSTRACT The environmental aspects of mining activities carried out across Quebec fall within the scope of various legal, prescribed or other frameworks (directives, policies, guides) at provincial and federal levels. These frameworks apply to one or another of the three major steps of a project: preliminary design, mining and closure. As the number of environmental regulations has greatly increased during the past few years, the object of this presentation is to state the main provincial and federal frameworks currently applicable in Quebec for the mining sector and to identify their special features.

ALTHOUGH the idea of roasting zinc concentrates in suspension had intrigued investigators for a number of years, no commercial application of a process appeared successful until the development of the "Cominco" process. The efficiency and high capacity of this process may be judged by the fact that nearly all other electrolytic plants and many zinc retort plants in the world use this method. A furnace of the Cominco type can roast without special preparatory treatment and without supplementary fuel, mineral sulphides such as zinc sulphides and iron sulphides containing varying amounts of moisture at any desired rate ranging from one-half up to full capacity. The full capacity of a unit is in general about three times that of a multiple hearth furnace of the same size. The mineral industry has seen many significant changes in the past decade. Increasingly, it has responded to unanticipated pressures and demands with a variety of voluntary initiatives. Yet there is still much to do. Mining now takes place in a different context than was the case in the past. Socio-economic, political and environmental considerations must now be integrated into traditional mining systems. This process of integration needs to involve industry, governments, academics, communities and other stakeholders to design a new approach to mining, one that can be fostered through interdisciplinary links and holistic strategies. This paper considers the meaning of sustainability in the context of the Canadian mining industry and explores the need for a broader vision for the mining industry. The role of technology is then analyzed and related to an initiative recently taken by Canadian universities to develop a national network for interdisciplinary research into sustainable mining, CaSM.
