The seismic velocities of intact rock are dependent on the applied stress. Unfortunately, the low susceptibility of seismic velocity to stress changes mean that changes in seismic velocity have to be measured extremely accurately to infer stress changes from them. Previously, it was thought that measurements of this accuracy could only be made with active sources or repeating earthquakes. In this paper, we show that the noise generated by mining activity can be used to construct virtual seismic signals with which we can measure changes in seismic velocity accurately enough to see the short- and long-term effects of a production blast on the surrounding medium. The time-dependent velocity variations achieved with this method show that the blast caused weakening of the rock mass for the rock within a radius of 200 m of the blast. The weakening is healed by confining stresses over a period of five days, after which permanent changes in the seismic velocity can be seen. The size and spatial distribution of the seismic velocity changes were compared to modelled changes in static volumetric stress, which supported the notion that seismic velocity changes can be used to measure the redistribution of stress after a blast. The results of this study indicate that this method can be a powerful tool to evaluate the evolution of stress in a mine at a relatively low cost as the data that it uses would normally be discarded.CITATION:Olivier, G, Lynch, R A and Brenguier, F, 2016. At Copper Refineries Pty. Ltd., Townsville, two reverberatory furnaces of 420 tonnes capacity are used to melt 210000 tonnes/year of copper for subsequent anode casting. When the refinery commenced production in1959, these furnaces were of 300 tonnes capacity. The original furnaces featured a silica brick hearth, magnesite and chrome magnesite side 'walls, and a sprung silica brick roof, but were unsatisfactory because of thelow refractory life and high costs. With continuous expansion in production and the incentive to increase furnace life and capacity the design of these furnaces has changed greatly since that time.The present furnaces feature all basic brick, a flat suspended basic brick roof, very extensive use of watercooled copper sections, and are of substantially increased (420 tonnes) capacity. Particular attention has been concentrated on high wear areas such as the taphole, side walls, and charging door jambs. Each furnace in its 24 h cycle, is charged, the copper melted, impurities skimmed off, metal "poled" prior to casting, and cast.The service condition during each of these operations is important in considering furnace refractory life.The improvements in operating practices and furnace 'construction which enabled the capacity of the furnaces to be increased are discussed. The life between major repairs to side walls has increased from 90 charges to300 charges.The scope for future improvement is considered and areas for development are suggested.

Numerical modelling is extensively used in civil and mining engineering applications because of cost and risk problems associated with different experimental studies. In this study, the effect of resin thickness was evaluated in bolt-grout-concrete interaction and bending behaviour of a fully grouted bolt installed across joints in post failure region. Tests were conducted in 20 and 40 MPa concretes, and modelling simulations were made, using ANSYS version 8.1, to include both with and without different pretension loads. It was found that in all resin thickness, both the strength of the concrete and bolt pretension had major influences on the shear resistance and shear displacement of the reinforced medium. Also it was found that the strength of the surrounding concrete is more important than that of the grout thickness in both the shear resistance and shear displacement when the bolt is pretensioned.

Chemical admixtures are not commonly included in the variety of backfill mixes used in the mining industry. This may be attributed to several reasons including, but not limited to: the perceived high added cost, 2. the lack of awareness about their proper use, and 3. the lack of knowledge about their features and benefits. In the construction industry today, however, chemical admixtures are used in the majority of the concrete produced, enabling concrete to become a more cost-effective building material. They also enable construction crews to meet demands for year-round construction, quicker completion of construction projects, and improved concrete properties. The high demand for chemical admixtures in the construction industry has led to numerous innovations in admixture technology in recent years. Some of these chemical admixtures have been found to enhance the production, transport, placement, and in situ properties of backfill mixes. Others have been found to reduce the cost of such mixes while maintaining, and in some cases improving, their physical properties. In this paper, a few of such innovative admixture technologies are discussed. The benefits, imparted by these technologies to backfill mixes as well as performance data on their use in several backfill applications at various mines, are presented.

In recent years stricter requirements imposed variously by the Companies Acts, auditors and the Stock Exchanges have resulted in annual financial statements of mining companies becoming more detailed, informative and useful. Standards of reporting on ore reserves have not kept pace with the improvements in financial information disclosure, despite the fact that ore reserves are usually the most important asset of a mining company. The ore reserve reporting practices of fifteen leading Australian mining companies are analysed against important specific criteria. In terms of detailed and meaningful disclosure, there is scope for major improve- ments in annual ore reserve reporting Practices.

Small-scale mining operations are characterised by a large variety of equipment availability and a high level of operational flexibility. Mine planning is usually scarce or absent in small quarries in Brazil, and mine management generally focuses on daily operations. As a result, analysis of the effects of unit operations, such as blasting, over the whole mining process is often neglected. The goal of the following project was to study the effect of production blasting on loading and hauling times, secondary breaking times and primary crushing times at the Experimental Mine of the Research Center for Responsible Mining of the University of São Paulo, Brazil. The operations analysed included blasts that performed:under the average operational standard, defined in this paper as Case 1according to quarry standards, defined in this paper as Case 2.In order to establish the effects of blasting on the downstream process, three key performance indictors were used:The time taken to load the truck, when there is the need for material selection. Due to the fact that we do not have an operational baseline, the increase in time cannot be established, meaning that we must content ourselves with comparing the mean time in each scenario.The average time used for secondary breaking machinery.The time required for the primary crusher to fully process the load of a single truck. The results obtained indicate correlations between the coarseness of the blasted material and these operational times. The Kucing Liar skarn deposit is located in the Ertsberg mining district, which also contains other skarn deposits and the Grasberg porphyry copper û gold deposit. The Ertsberg district is located in the province of Irian Jaya, IndonesiaÆs easternmost province. Mining development began in the Ertsberg district in 1972 with the mining of the Ertsberg deposit. Daily production in the district now averages about 230 000 tonnes of ore, with the bulk of the ore coming from the Grasberg open pit and the balance from underground mining of skarn deposits. During 1998, 45 218 additional metres of drilling were conducted to delineate and understand the Kucing Liar orebody. The deposit was first intersected in drill holes in 1994 and then was intersected in underground workings located about 1000 metres from the discovery drill hole in 1995. Initially, the two intersections were thought to be different orebodies but are now realised to be different parts of the same orebody. The Kucing Liar deposit consists of magnetite û copper û gold replacement and skarn mineralisation in favorable Tertiary and Cretaceous units. The deposit is approximately 2000 metres in length and averages about 200 to 250 metres in thickness. The width varies from 400 to 600 metres. Drilling in 1998 was directed towards delineating the deposit on its NW and SE ends and to determine its down dip extension. Reserves for the deposit at the end of 1998 stand at 320 million tonnes at 1.4 per cent copper, 1.4 g/t gold, and 5.3 g/t silver. Many important questions remain to be answered concerning the relationship of the Kucing Liar orebody to the major faults in the district and to the Grasberg intrusive complex which contains the Grasberg orebody. Continued exciting developments are anticipated as work to understand the deposit by drilling and geologic study continues.

The history of the Ph-Cu-Zn mineralisation in the orthampton Block of Western Australia has been further investigated. It was hoped that (1) Rh-Sr studies on partially-remelled granulites, wall-rocks to the dolerite dykes, should date the dolerite intrusion, (2) Rh-Sr data on hydrothermally-altered dolerite should date the sulphide mineralisation, (3) Pb model ages on the galenas might provide an independent dating of the mineralisation, in addition to any geochemical information that might be derived. Only the second dating aim was fulfilled, but the Pb isotope data, when combined with the Rh-Sr data, have permitted deductions about U, Th and Pb abundance changes during the regional metamorphism, and about a possible source of the ore Pb. In detail the following has been found. (1) The partially-remelted granulitic wall rocks yield a scattered whole-rock Rh-Sr isochron which seems not to have been reset by the dyke intrusion (age 1037 ± 146 Ma, with initial Sr ratio 0.7171 ± 0·0054, MSWD = 111). This date agrees well with that reported previously for granulites from another locality; together theyestablish the time the metamorphic period closed. (2) The hydrothermally-altered dolerites yield a Rh-Sr whole-rock date 434 ± 16 Ma, with initial Sr ratio 0.7072 ± 0·0029 and MSWD = 31, taken as referring to the time of Ph-Zn mineralisation. This contrasts with a report of much older palaeomagnetic and K-Ar datings of the dolerite (not less than 550 Ma, possibly older) and suggests that neither the dolerites nor their heat have had any connection with the mobilisation of the Pbscavenging solutions. (3) The Pb isotope ratios of galenas from the ores yield a well-correlated regression which is not amenable to any of the model-age calculations. (4) The Pb-isotopic trends negate any genetic connection between dolerite and mineralisation, but the country-rock granulites could be the Pb source. (5) Combination of the Rh-Sr dates and the Pb data in a "simultaneous isochrons" construct permits the inference of major losses from the system during the regional metamorphism, in the order U>Pb>Th, with substantial homogenisation of the remaining Pb. This left a wide range in local UlPb and Th/U among the source rocks which eventually were scavenged by the mineralising solutions. (6) These geochemical deductions are shown to be compatible with previously-published information on the abundance ofU and Th in the Northampton Block granulites, which are thus seen to be credible as source rocks for the ore lead.

This paper discusses the significant land use changes that have occurred in the Latrobe Valley during 150 years of white occupation. The developments and changes were haphazard and made with little thought as to their setting or their environmental consequences. As a result many landscape and land management problems have not been addressed.This paper contends that the mistakes will continue unless an overall plan for the landscape of the area is developed and implemented. The concept of 'Greening the Valley' is introduced. It aims to provide focus for a comprehensive co-ordinated plan which caters for the need to restore the landscape and the need to provide for future land use. The plan will seek to draw on three major landscape features of the Latrobe Valley: the natural setting of the hills, rivers, valleys and forests; the agricultural land use including the forestry plantations; and the industrial complexes and urban areas.Rehabilitation of mining areas is a key element of the plan but must be put in a regional context and not be treated as an isolated function of a single organisation. A major challenge will be to integrate the worked out areas into useful and significant landscapes. The paper concludes by explaining the process that will be followed in an attempt to realise the concept.

Pongkor Gold Mines is one of seven units of production owned by PT Aneka Tambang (State owned mining company). The mine is located in the western part of Java Island, Indonesia. It is in the Bogor District and approximately 110 kilometres to the south of capital Jakarta. It is located in very steep hilly terrain intersected by many river valleys and the mine site is approximately 500 metres above mean sea level (see Figures 1 and 2 - Mine location map and picture)

The general theme of the paper is a resume of factors which induce management to explore for oil, gas, coal and uranium in Australia. It is non-technical in the sense that apart from brief references exploration techniques are not covered. The central theme is the interplay of such diverse factors as taxation, mining 'regu- lations, exploration costs, availability of competent personnel, potential markets within and outside Australia, projected prices of sources of energy and their distortion by governmental action including restrictions on international trade for economic or political reasons, the role of the so-called multi- national companies, extreme views by pressure groups on the preservation of the environment, the availability of funds for exploration and the possible returns to the providers of exploration monies.

AngloGold Ashanti Australia’s (AGAA) Tropicana gold mine (TGM) geology department seized the rare opportunity of building a new geology department for a new operation: the philosophy, the people and the processes. Not satisfied with the status quo, or simply repeating what was familiar and already known, the vision was for an innovative, agile, multidiscipline, high performance team, capable of delivering on expectations.To achieve this, the geology department has operationalised key components of human resource management (HRM).This paper describes the operational design and implementation of key HRM components: job analysis, organisational design and organisational development. The benefits of this approach are presented in terms of engagement and autonomy in roles, opportunity for role variety and flexibility of the organisational structure. The result is a geology department that provides the functions of mine geology, resource development, regional exploration, survey, data management, geographic information systems (GIS), resource modelling, scheduling, sample preparation, resource coordination and hydrogeology, and even geotechnical engineering for a year!Considerations for application in other geology departments are presented in terms of fundamental requirements and lessons learnt. Fundamental requirements for success have been the sustained support of the general manager, valuing the scrutiny that comes with continuous improvement, high quality HRM systems and tools within the organisation, and a committed leadership group within the department. Mine ventilation models are now an accepted component of most mine management systems. However, modern ventilation models also represent a highly structured spatial data source, defining underground pathways and connections across a mine. This creates opportunities to extend the use of network models beyond ventilation design, by using critical path algorithms to find pathways such as minimum distance or minimum time.This paper explores the use of ventilation network models to automatically analyse and calculate potential emergency escape routes. A variation of Dijkstra’s algorithm is used to predict complex pathways between any two points across a model, representing an escape route from an emergency area (such as a fire) to a safe location (such as the surface or a refuge station). Weighting can be assigned to paths to represent potential travel speed, obstructions or preferred routes. Finally, emergency considerations such as smoke or gas in some parts of the mine can then be incorporated into the pathways to force the algorithm to avoid dangerous routes and specify safer pathways. This paper presents the results and findings of geochemical and mineralogical testwork conducted on samples collected from waste rock dumps at two mine sites, located in South Carolina, USA (Site 1) and Sudbury Ontario, Canada (Site 2). Important aspects of the relationship between the physical and geochemical aspects of the dumps are also presented. The overall aims of the project were to 1. determine if the physical and hydrological nature of the waste-rock dumps had any impact on the geochemical and mineralogical characteristics of the dump materials; and 2. to identify key implications for dump construction for ARD control. The results of geochemical and mineralogical tests indicate that the waste rock at Site 1 had undergone significant in-dump weathering and was relatively advanced with respect to ARD evolution. In contrast, the waste rock at Site 2 had undergone some weathering, however still contained a considerable amount of sulfide minerals. Testing also suggested that flushing of oxidation products at Site 2 had been limited, which therefore promoted the storage of oxidation products at the site. In addition, materials that had a D50 particle size in the range of 5 mm to 30 mm appeared to be more readily flushed than samples that had a D50 particle size of 30 mm. This suggested that preferential water pathways may have developed within the dumps at both sites.

Particles of nickel flash furnace malle (45 per cent i) were oxidized in a dropping-particle furnace. The particles melted and the molten drops simulated those produced by the atomization of molten matte. The partly oxidized droplets were quenched and then reacted with silica flux to form high-grade matte (70 per cent i) and a fayalite slag. This paper describes the experimental equipment and deals with chemical aspects of the investigation such as volatile impurity distribution and thermodynamic considerations. The overall behaviour of minor elements such as Cu, Co, As and Pb was similar to that observed in conventional converting.

A case-study is presented of the tailings dam of Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd., at Brukunga, South Australia. The methods of-construction and operation of the dam are outlined over the whole working life of the mine. Procedures of soil mechanics used to estimate the stability 'of the face of the dam are described, and seepage problems are dis- cussed. It is concluded that the dam is basically stable, and enabled Nairne Pyrites Pty. Ltd. to dispose of tailings economically, although more attention to seepage control may have been ad- vantageous. Suggestions are made on the construction and operation of tailings dams elsewhere.

High speed diamond cutting has extensive applications in civil and mining engineering. A project involving the diamond sawing of black granite is investigating the nature of the diamond cutting process. A sawing machine was devised to adjust the cutting load and measure cutting speed. Cuttings were collected for size distribution analysis. The surface produced by interaction between diamond. grits and the rock was subjected to microscopic investigation. Increasing load prompts the proportional increase in the cutting rate. But the mean size of cuttings shows little change. The photomicrographs of the cutting tracks indicate neither patterns of crack formation nor signs of the ductile behaviour of the rock. A diamond cutting model for hard rock is formulated on these observations. Diamond cutting is a process of surface failure, which advances in four stages. The polycrystalline characteristics of a hard rock and the action of high-speed diamond grits guarantee the creation of crack nuclei which develop into cracks in various directions. This network crisscrossing cracks enable the stripping of this surface layer from the rock.

Mining education in Australia has undergone another cyclical downturn over the past five years and several departments have been discontinued while others are still teetering on the brink of destruction. During this downturn Curtin UniversityÆs WA School of Mines (WASM) has managed to stay alive and well, but this has not been by accident. This paper outlines some of the strategies and experiences that have kept WASM in a strong position and offers hope to other departments and schools elsewhere that are still experiencing difficulty. This paper is also directed at all mining departments and schools that are certainly going to see it all happen again after the next mining boom turns to bust.

A novel method for determining viable cells of the mineral leaching bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans has been developed. The cells were collected on 0.45/Lm cellulose acetate filters, washed with artificial minewater, and incubated in the presence of ferrous ion at pH3 in an atmosphere containing radioactive (14C) carbon dioxide. Colonies of bacterial growth were detected by the image formed on X-ray photographic paper (autoradiography). The method was compared with three conventional techniques and shown to detect three orders of magnitude more cells in cultures of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in the late exponential phase of growth.

Research into cemented rock fill at Mount Isa Mines Limited since 1992 is described. The key mechanisms controlling segregation during stope filling with cemented rock fill are described and include the gravity flow mechanism which is described in detail. Examples are provided to demonstrate these mechanisms. Comparisons are made between Mount Isa Mines' cemented rock fill and slurry-based cemented rock fills. Recent backfill stability modelling using a three-dimensional finite clement program is described.
