This paper describes the design of the marine riser structures, including the design measures for sealing and protection from flooding, dewatering and connection to the main tunnels, for the Gold Coast desalination plant in Queensland. The risers connect the intake and discharge tunnels to the ocean. Construction commenced on both in April 2007. The paper describes the key design criteria for the risers, the construction constraints that influenced the design and the design of the main elements of the risers and the connections to the tunnels.

At 14 per cent, the representation of women working in the mining industry is the lowest among primary industry categories in Canada. Despite an increase in research and industry commitment to advance and retain women in the mining industry, the gender gap in mining organisations persists.This paper is based upon a recent Canadian survey of 163 highly qualified women (HQW) working in the mining sector. For the purpose of this research, HQW were defined as women with a BachelorÆs degree or higher. This research sought to identify career progression and retention patterns of women who in theory have the educational qualifications to advance into positions of leadership in mining operations. We considered why womenÆs advancement in mining organisations has stalled; examined the career development pathways of HQW; and investigated the interactions of mining workplace culture on HQWÆs career development and retention within the Canadian mining industry. Results?indicated two distinct career pathway trends for HQW. æThe specialistÆ; a career characterised by multiple professional scientific and technical positions, and æthe corporateÆ; a career characterised by professional administrative roles and roles in mid-level management. It was found that neither æcorporatesÆ nor æspecialistsÆ systematically progressed into senior management and executive roles. These findings suggest that HQWÆs careers in mining are stalled, despite a strong indication by respondents of interest in their professional career advancement. With regards to?workplace?culture, respondents indicated that blatant forms of gender discrim-ination have been reduced in mining workplaces; however, exclusion from informal networks, implicit bias and subtler forms of workplace discrimination persist. Consistent with previous mining sector research, improving work-life balance, work flexibility and mentorship were found as key drivers for HQW to advance and remain in the industry.CITATION:Hughes, C, Scoble, M and Roberts, M, 2012. The imperative to operate sustainably requires all equipment and processes to operate at their maximum possible efficiency. Achieving this ideal state requires a thorough understanding, not only of the process itself, but also of the tools available to design and assess potential improvements. This paper presents a case where the widely employed Discrete Element Method (DEM) toolset proved insufficient to model problematic material flow during the process of optimising wet screening performance. A Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) model was found to more accurately replicate the flow characteristics of the physical system. Site observations identified biased loading of the screen decks to cause inefficiencies in the wet screening of an iron ore processing circuit. Two numerical modelling approaches were pursued with the aim to select the most suitable one and continue the optimisation process based on that selected model. Selection criteria were established, based on the minimum requirements of being able to replicate the problem, including the main flow dynamics deemed to cause the issue. The DEM model was found to over-simplify the slurry flow dynamics within the scrubber and no laterally biased flow was introduced by the scrubber’s rotation to the otherwise symmetric system. Since DEM was not able to accurately replicate the existing problem, it was deemed an unsuitable method to assess the effect of any changes to the system. The second approach consisted of a SPH model. This model was deemed to map the flow within the scrubber with sufficient accuracy to address the problem, as it produced biased screen loading comparable to that reported from site. Changes to the wet chute, delivering material from the scrubber to the screen, aimed to neutralise the non-centrality introduced via the scrubber, were then successfully designed and assessed using the SPH model.

This presentation addresses the sources and weighting of project risk in coarse gold deposits with relevance to experiences at the Ballarat mine and Castlemaine goldfield. With sample representation and reliability often a source of great error in the resource estimation of coarse gold deposits, it follows that this matter should be of greatest risk to a mining project - but is it? What are the costs and efforts required to best quantify the sampling error due to nuggetty effect? After all, the main problem in Victorian gold mining ventures in the current decade is not the amount of gold available, but defi ning which portion of it can be converted to Ore Reserves or more so profitable gold bars. The author postulates that greater risk to the project lies in the geological interpretation and matching resource spatial parameters to mining methods, than the degree of uncertainty related to grade due to nuggetty gold. Recent experience in the Victorian goldfi elds is that the investor market has already severely discounted Mineral Resources reported in accordance with The JORC Code - so if they don't believe in the capacity to upgrade the resource why should we? To this end, Castlemaine Goldfi elds Ltd at its Ballarat gold project does not intend to estimate its gold mineralisation for public release, instead choosing to focus on the geological interpretation and mine planning elements. So with coarse gold deposits, is your Mineral Resource reported with The JORC Code a glass half full or half empty? Our mining forefathers in Victoria had no predictive tools which could define resources to any degree and yet were successful. By over emphasis on the definition of mineral resources and particularly the sampling error, are we ignoring the basics of cost control, solid geological interpretations and maximum mining flexibility. The central Nanling region in South China experienced multistage granite intrusive events and corresponding metallogenic processes during the Early Yanshanian period (190–140 Ma). In this study, a wide variety of published data on age determination, petrological characteristics, major and trace elements compositions, whole rock Sr–Nd contents and zircon Hf isotopic composition of the representative granite composites were systematically collected to estimate their cooling-uplift rates, granite evolution processes and mineral deposit formation. These granites have been classified into two groups based on their age and geochemical variations: Group 1 (180–165 Ma) and Group 2 (165–150 Ma). Major and trace element geochemistry suggests that Group 2 experienced more intense magmatic evolution and differentiation than Group 1. In addition, Group 1 granitoids are classified as A1-type alkaline rocks with faster cooling and uplift rates, whereas Group 2 granites are considered as A2-type aluminous rocks with slower cooling and ascent rates. Furthermore, the Group 1 granitoids have younger Nd and Hf two-stage model ages but higher eNd(t) and eHf(t) values, indicating influence from crust–mantle interaction. In contrast, the Group 2 granites show different values, suggesting stronger upper crustal contamination or assimilation. The slowly cooled and ascended Group 2 granites experienced much heavier crustal contamination (or assimilation) and crystal fractionation, contributing to the large W–Sn mineralisation in the central Nanling region. New Zealand depends on foreign investment for economic development. This also applies to the development of New Zealand's mineral resources. For this foreign investment to happen there must be some incentives to attract the investment. While prospectivity is the dominant parameter considered by investors it is not a variable that can be changed, only the perception of New Zealand's prospectivity. Other parameters likely to be considered are sovereign risk, red tape, green tape, land access, civil unrest, land claims, social risk, labour relations, infrastructure and natural disasters. Regulators and political will can vary some of these parameters. Where New Zealand fits internationally can be measured by investors' perceptions of these parameters. Following on from these perceptions New Zealand can be seen to have advantages in some areas and be disadvantaged in others. How to deal with the disadvantages to give investors confidence is not easy in the New Zealand environment where the development of mineral resources plays a small part in an economy dominated by agriculture. Added to this is the current global state of the minerals industry which offers even more of a challenge to attract foreign investment to develop New Zealand's mineral resources.

The 4 km long Huguenot Toll Tunnel in the Western Cape region of South Africa celebrated its tenth anniversary on 18 March 1998. At present a single (South) bore with bi-directional traffic flow is operational. The North bore was originally excavated but not lined and equipped.The tunnel is fitted with a semi-transverse ventilation system comprising 45/350 kW two speed fresh-air and 1 MW exhaust air fans at each of the portals. These provide ventilation through fresh and exhaust air ducts above the ceiling separated by movable partition doors. Secondary air ducts deliver air at low level. The fan control depends on the levels of CO pollution or visibility measured at six positions along the tunnel.The system performed well during initial tests and under conditions of low traffic volumes. As traffic volumes increased, and user complaints of bad air in the tunnel were received on several occasions, we realised that we had a problem. Tests confirmed that natural airflow within the tunnel induced by prevailing meteorological conditions outside the portals affected the performance of the ventilation system causing a plug of bad air to be trapped at varying positions along the operating tunnel.The control systems in the tunnel are presently being upgraded as described by Gray, Rieckert and Bullock (1998). As part of the retrofit we are implementing a new control strategy for the ventilation system which takes into account the external weather conditions. This paper discusses the 24 month long meteorological data gathering exercise, which is on-going, and explores the philosophies planned for controlling the ventilation system. The correlation between winds external to the tunnel and induced airflow inside the tunnel are examined. The effects of the weather induced airflow on the existing ventilation system are considered and proposals given for taking these effects into account in the new control strategy. These include the implementation of an expert system to predict ambient airflow from prevailing weather conditions, and the use of airflow measurements taken in the uncompleted North bore as a cross-check.The paper highlights the need to take cognisance of external weather conditions when designing tunnel ventilation systems.

Straits completed its Feasibility study on the Whim Creek Copper Project in 1996. At this stage WCCP provided Straits with an open pit mine - heap leach - SX-EW copper project to follow on from its successful Girilambone Copper Operation (GCC). Since this time Straits has continued to review WCCP investigating a number of development and production scenarios. The development of Whim Creek, early 2004 and is on schedule to commence copper production in the final quarter of 2004. On current reserves Whim Creek will produce approximately 17 000 tonnes of copper cathode per annum for three to four years, at cash costs of The paper will cover a general description of the project, the project development and key design issues. Lime-based neutralisation has long been the remediation treatment of choice for acidic mine pit waters. While suited to the attenuation of acidity, lime-based neutralisation may be difficult to implement efficiently due to variation in quality and the partial loss of neutralisation efficiency due to armouring. Large volumes of gypsum-bearing sludge may also require mechanical dewatering and transfer to final voids prior to resumption of in-pit mining or closure. Thus, operational costs may be substantially higher than primary neutralisation alone. Lime production also results in large greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions.Hydrotalcites (HT) are a class of Mg-Al layered double hydroxide minerals with the composition Mg6Al2(CO3 )(OH)16.4H2O. A range of other divalent and trivalent cations may also readily substitute for Mg (eg Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn), Al (eg Fe, La, Ce) and metalloids/oxyanions (SeO42-, AsO43 -/CrO42 -, MnO4-) for CO3 into the hydrotalcite structure. A common feature of acid mine pit waters, often overlooked in assessment of potential remediation options, is the frequent predominance of divalent and trivalent cations as a consequence of partial decomposition of both ore and gangue minerals during in-pit wall rock leaching. Thus, given the presence of substantial divalent and trivalent cations in acidic mine pit waters, an opportunity exists to exploit and in effect work harmoniously with the prevailing pit water composition to form a polymetallic hydrotalcite.The utility of hydrotalcites in the remediation of acidic mine pit waters lies in their ability to incorporate a wide range of contaminants; instantaneous formation, often in a single step; simple post-treatment solute composition; rapid settling; low sludge volume; and the potential to form ore-grade precipitates potentially amendable to reprocessing to (partially) recover remediation costs. The question is posed because many engineers, tunnelling and other specialisations, frequently demonstrate an unwillingness to embrace marketing. Grade control is a process that requires the interaction between many components of the mining operation and successful grade control is only realised through good data, robust systems, and a well-trained, motivated and disciplined workforce.The Mt Magnet Gold Project Pty Ltd (MMGP), a wholly owned subsidiary of Ramelius Resources Limited, started mining at Mt Magnet in February 2012 with high expectations for success. Positive cash flow would fund an aggressive exploration and mine development program in the area to increase mine life. Disappointment followed when after start-up the operation had issues achieving budget grade and realising the predicted grade of the mined ore. In January 2013, things started to improve. During the next six months, gold production steadily increased with successive months achieving record production. What had changed?Improvements started following the realisation that controlling grade was not the sole responsibility of the mining geologist and that everyone on-site has a role to play. COPING WITH COMPLEXITY In every industry, and mining is no exception, plant and processes increase in complexity over time and managers and operators need correspondingly more knowledge. The mine manager has to delegate details to operators, engineers, metallurgists, accountants, safety specialists, personnel officers and the rest. Is it reasonable then, to expect the Mines Inspector to be competent to judge the conduct of all these operations against the criterion of the regulations? Obviously not, but what are the alternatives? One is a superficial inspection where the inspector goes on a hazard hunt for broken steps and missing handrails. Another is one in which an army of specialist inspectors marches on a mine, sometimes outnumbering the staff. Each is competent to assess some part of the operation and if he or she can find an opposite number among the mine staff, they can discuss details. But what good does it achieve? The system acts to remedy present defects and to make recommendations which, if only they were followed, would prevent the same things happening again. Given that this process has been going on since the first Factory Act of about 1840, how is it that there are any more defects left to put right? The answer of course is that defects keep appearing, and new defects arise as fast as the old ones are found and corrected. Further progress can only be made by preventing defects at their source.

Evolution’s Mount Rawdon Operation (MRO) produces gold and silver through open pit mining methods. The mining operations are scheduled to be completed in FY24 (Financial Year 2024), after which low-grade stockpiles will be processed until the end of FY27. As part of MRO’s Progressive Rehabilitation and Closure Plan (PRCP), RGS Environmental Consultants (RGS) and Deswik were engaged to develop the final landform surface and a whole of site probabilistic water balance/water quality (WB/WQ) model to evaluate the viability of several closure options with respect to water quality in the various site water storages, particularly the final void which will form a pit lake. This case study details the closure option which included (amongst other things) covering the final landforms and directing water toward or away from the final void post closure. Closure and rehabilitation for MRO had previously been planned and evaluated on a ‘domain’ basis. Furthermore, the rehabilitation plans and final water management plans for the Tailings Storage Facility (TSF), Waste Rock Storage Facility (WRSF) and other domains were not coordinated, possibly resulting in competitive rehabilitation material requirements at the commencement of closure activities. An assumption was that a legacy non-acid forming (NAF) stockpile would provide sufficient material to both supplement ex-pit material for the construction of the TSF embankment raises and to complete all closure activities, but the volumes available and the volumes required to complete the closure activities had not been quantified.

PT Newmont Minahasa Raya (PT NMR) is an Indonesian joint venture subsidiary of the Newmont Gold Company of Denver, Colorado, USA. PT Newmont Minahasa Raya operates a 700 000 tonne per annum gold plant in the Minahasa region of North Sulawesi, Indonesia. At full capacity the plant is expected to produce an average of 150 000 to 180 000 ounces of gold per year until the year 2007 based on current existing reserves.Exploration began in 1986 and high grade mineralisation was discovered in 1988. Subsequent drilling defined a resource of approximately 2000 000' ounces. Reserves as of 1 January 1997 were 7 035 000 tonnes grading 8.46 grams per tonne, for 1 913 000 contained ounces. Metallurgical testwork commenced in 1991. Construction of the plant started in late-1994 and the first gold was poured in March 1996.

The smelter building at Sarcheshmeh Copper Complex, Iran, houses two reverberatory furnaces and five Pierce-Smith converters. Under normal operating conditions SO2 emissions fill the building, posing a major health problem for all workers in the building, and reducing their ability to maintain the plant. The converter fume extraction system was analysed using plant measurements, engineering modelling of the entire system and CFD modelling of the extraction hoods. By applying fundamental engineering concepts, a user-interactive computer program was developed that enabled plant engineers and operators to gain a detailed understanding of the system. In conjunction with plant measurements, the model quantified the amount of inleakage throughout the system, identifying it as a significant contributor to the poor extraction performance. Furthermore, it enabled investigation of the effects of hood gates, converters on line, hood dampers, flue insulation, electrostatic precipitator (ESP) operation, and inclusion of an acid plant. The model gave unprecedented insight into the operation of a counterintuitive buoyancy-driven extraction system.

The objectives of this paper are two-fold. First, it will show what problems can arise when single estimated values are substituted for a distribution of values when evaluating an open pit mine project in the face of uncertainty. Secondly, it will show how the ability to deal with uncertainty and risk in mine project evaluation can have a significant impact on the ownersÆ and stakeholdersÆ investment decision-making. Here a new mine evaluation framework, the integrated valuation/ optimisation framework (named IVOF), is introduced as an alternative tool for mine project evaluation where uncertainty and risk are incorporated in the evaluation process.

New South Wales mining legislation reinforces a systematic approach to safety management. It is now a requirement of all mines in the coal, metalliferous and quarrying sectors in NSW to prepare a Mine Safety Management Plan. The paper briefly outlines work currently being undertaken by the Safety Operations Branch of the NSW Department of Mineral Resources (DMR). The DMR is working proactively with NSW mines in the preparation and implementation of effective Mine Safety Management Plans. There is a growing realisation that a systematic approach to safety management, underpinned by the process of hazard identification, has real potential to improve safety in the workplace. The paper briefly describes the framework used in a current æmines education programÆ and its æduty of careÆ foundation. Particular attention is paid to the role of mining operators in the implementation of Mine Safety Management Plans and their expected behaviour in demonstrating compliance. One challenge is convincing some mining operators that they must adopt new ways of working. Safety Operations officers are often reminded of the need to translate Mine Safety Management Plans into practical safety systems during audits and inspections of mines and through investigations into accidents and incidents. To have a real effect on the mineÆs safety performance, using these systems must be a normal way of going about a dayÆs work for all persons who work at the mine: not a safety manual collecting dust on the mine managerÆs bookshelf. Mine Safety Management Plans are important to mining operators. Not only will positive involvement in the development and use of safety systems ensure they meet their obligations under mining legislation, but it will also help prevent themselves or their workmates being injured or killed.

This paper is a collection of thoughts and frameworks. It addresses a simple question: æIf we are to believe the large number of people and institutions indicating that humans are destroying the Earth and that the end is nigh, why do we bother trying to be sustainable?Æ The paper lays out evidence for the existence of multiple hazards to global society. The existence of a hazard alone is insufficient to make an assessment of risk. Risk estimates are required to support decision-making. An approach to assessing risk is provided and some limited data are presented. A new ædefinitionÆ or statement of what sustainability (in a broad sense) might have become is then given. A decision framework for guiding decision- making about the risks is developed. This framework includes a definition of leadership with inherent implications for what determines whether a leadership position by title is actually leading. The paper concludes by offering a view of minerals industry sustainability and considerations around maturity in the current economic situation. It is hoped that by placing this collection of frameworks around sustainability, a supporting structure emerges that will facilitate action. It is proposed that action taken in this way will be more effective than reaction to regulation or even social license to operate imperatives because it is driven by a more holistic view of the challenges and the potential roles of individuals û all of whom are potential leaders at some scale of action.

In this case study we compare the sampling quality of diamond drilling (DD) and reverse circulation (RC) drilling at the high sulfidation Purnama gold–silver (Au-Ag) deposit located in northern Sumatra, Indonesia.There was a systematic bias of 23 per cent gold metal under-call in the diamond drilling based Ore Reserve estimate compared to the mill reconciliation over three years of production. The RC based Grade Control data and mill production data were in much closer accord. Investigation led to quantification of the significantly reduced sampling imprecision (or improved precision) of RC drilling samples relative to diamond drilling samples and the determination of a grade bias between the drill types caused by sample volume and metal distribution in the mineralisation. An infill RC drilling program was undertaken to improve data density across the pit for inclusion in the Mineral Resource estimate. This subsequently increased Au metal in the estimate by 16 per cent.The sampling imprecision of primary diamond drill sampling is rarely tested. Duplicate sampling can be used to quantify sampling imprecision at each stage of subsampling. In diamond drilling it is tested at the primary sampling stage via second half core sampling, while RC sampling is tested with field duplicate sampling at the rig. Duplicate data can be compared in a number of ways to determine imprecision including Thompson-Howarth plots which quantify imprecision to allow comparison between different methods and protocols.
