The paper deals with the problems of grouting methods for fissured-porous rock. The paper describes design procedure, injection process patterns and hydrodynamic testing techni- que to plan grouting programs for fissured-porous aquifers. A number of case histories is given to illustrate the imp- lementation of developed methodology at various mining pro- jects.

During longwall mining in the Bowen Basin, open tension cracks formed by overburden subsidence occur to a height of about 175 m above the mining horizon. Within this zone, water in aquifers or inundated workings will flow into the mine.At the Oaky Creek mines Aquila seam, open cut pits containing pit water overlie German Creek seam longwall panels at a height of about 105 m. The highly saline water is classified as contaminated and cannot be discharged off-site. Because alternative water storage facilities were not available, innovative water management solutions were needed to allow longwall mining to proceed without underground flooding.Computer modelling and underground inflow measurements have been completed to accurately determine inflow rates into longwall mines from overlying water sources at increasing overburden heights. Research work has also included determining cost-effective blanket treatment of final voids and reshaping spoil piles to minimise downward seepage.Ponded water overlying the Aquila low, Grasstree south and A6 pits required remedial works prior to longwall undermining to prevent flooding. In the Aquila low pit it was necessary to partition the pit and remove water overlying longwall 32. Two in-pit bridges were constructed by dozing and track compacting low wall spoil. The final void above the longwall panel was kept dry during undermining. Maximum recorded underground inflow rate was 30.0 L/s.The Grasstree south pit final void, part of the ramp and much of the spoil piles were inundated prior to undermining of 308 panel. A bridge and blanket were required to prevent ponding above the longwall. Maximum recorded inflow during undermining was 23.2 L/s.The pit A6 south final void, which contained dumped, saturated rejects and inundated highwall mining entries was undermined by longwall 36 at the Oaky No 1 underground mine. Because mapping of highwall entries was not available, the maximum calculated inflow rate of 73.0 L/s was based on all design entries being fully inundated. The actual inflow rate during longwall mining ranged up to 20.0 L/s.Water management improvements that have been implemented include greater use of contaminated pit water to wash coal, use of evaporation fans, and installation of a 6 ML/day reverse osmosis plant for water purification.CITATION:Klenowski, G and Winter, S, 2017. The dissolution of carbon from carbonaceous materials into molten iron is a key step in various ironmaking operations. For example, in new direct smelting processes, carbon in the form of coal is injected into the molten iron bath, which leads to the dissolution of carbon. In foundry operations, typical recarburizer materials can range from high purity graphite to chars. The dissolution performance of these" materials is critical to the operation and could dictate the efficiency and economics of the process.Dissolution kinetics has been studied by various investigators to explain the influence of melt conditions and carbon type (Sahajwalla et al, 1994; Shigeno, Tokuda, and Ohtani, 1985; Orsten and Oeters; 1988; Ganguly and Reid, 1992; Wright and Taylor, 1993). The influence of melt sulphur content on the dissolution kinetics has been characterised (Sahajwalla et al, 1994), with sulphur retarding the rate of carbon dissolution. The carbon dissolution from different sources is seen to vary significantly even under similar melt conditions. This observation has been explained by investigators on the basis of the varying ash content present in the carbonaceous materials. However, ash content alone cannot account for the variability in dissolution kinetics reported in other studies. One such study is presented below.In a recent study (Sahajwalla et al, 1994), pulverised carbonaceous materials were injected into the molten iron bath and the" dissolution kinetics was established. The dissolution of graphite and glassy carbon, which contain almost 100 per cent carbon, was seen to be significantly different when the molten iron contained sulphur. The influence of melt sulphur content was explained on the basis of different wetting behaviour observed.Importantly, the study showed that even pure carbon sources dissolved at significantly different rates. Hence, their performance could not be explained on the basis of ash content.The key difference between graphite and glassy carbon is in their atomic structure. Graphite is highly ordered whereas glassy carbon has relatively poor ordering in its atomic structure. This study showed that the atomic structure in carbonaceous materials can have a significant effect on their dissolution performance.The focus of the present investigation which stems from the past study described above (Sahajwalla et al, 1994), is to investigate the influence of atomic structure of carbonaceous materials on their dissolution into Fe-C-S melts.The specific objective of this study is to determine the relationship between dissolution kinetics and crystallographic character of carbon sources. In order to accomplish this goal, a range of different materials representing a spectrum of carbon sources have been chosen for the investigation. These materials include brown coal char, two types of Auscarb (A and B), and commercial graphite. Auscarb is prepared by calcining Auscoal at 1000°C. Auscoal is made from chemically cleaned Australian coals (Bowling, Chandler and Waugh, 1990). Part 1 of this paper details the dissolution performance of the materials studied, while Part 11 describes the X-ray diffraction study. The relationship between the atomic structural dimension and dissolution rate constant is discussed in light of the results obtained.

The recent installation of top gas temperature probes in blast furnaces at Australian Iron & Steel Pty. Ltd. - Port Kembla, has provided the means for studying radial gas flow distribution in blast furnace shafts. This paper describes the top gas temperature probes and outlines their development and results of initial studies aimed at obtaining a suitable relationships between temperature profiles and furnace parameters. The effects of various combinations of burden materials have been outlined by the results reported. The use of probes has also helped to clarify the effect of casting cycles on furnace operation leading to increased emphasis on the reduction of the interval between gun-up and drill-out. Areas for future studies are also broadly Outlined.

This paper summarises the findings of 27 model-scale bench blasts in magnetic mortar, which were conducted from 2011 to 2014 at the blasting site of the Montanuniversitaet Leoben.The aim of the study was the investigation of the influence of blasthole delay times in small-scale bench blasts on the face characteristics and cracking damage created in the surrounding rock, which affects the fragmentation in subsequent rows.The test specimens or blocks, which were produced out of magnetite concrete, were roughly 1:100 in scale to normal bench blasts. The confinement of the testing blocks at the sides and back ensured the similarity to normal bench blasts with regard to the wave transmission into the surrounding rock. The specimen contained three or four rows with five blastholes each and were shot row by row, with virgin (undamaged) material in row 1 and increasingly damaged or preconditioned material in the following rows.The tested delay times varied between 0, 28, 73 and 140 µs, which corresponds to 0, 0.4, 1.0 and 2.0 ms/m of burden.The evaluation of the material properties showed that the use of magnetite concrete eliminated the inhomogeneous behaviour of rock, but some unexpected differences of the individual production cycles were still detected.The characteristics of the bench after each blast was evaluated along three horizontal lines out of a 3D model of the bench face. The tested delay time sequences of the virgin (first row) and single preconditioned blasts (second row) produced more overbreak for longer delays, while the third-row shots resulted in a smoothened surface independent of the chosen delay.The introduced damage after every blast was evaluated by an observation of irregularities on the newly blasted bench face. The visible cracks at the top of the testing blocks were documented and divided into several crack families according to their angle, length and origin. The remaining block was broken out of the blasting site after blasting, cut into several horizontal and vertical slices and dye penetrant spray was used to visualise the cracks created. Some of the detected crack families showed an influence of the delay time. The calculated mean crack density and mean crack intersection density showed that longer delays resulted in a higher degree of damage.The fragmentation results were well reproduced by the basic three-parameter Swebrec function. The observed improvement of fragmentation in the second- and third-row blasts was linked to the preconditioning of the burden for the following row while blasting the actual row. With the exception of the simultaneously initiated blastholes, the blasts showed coarser fragmentation for the shortest delays, while the longest delays generated the finest fragmentation.CITATION:Schimek, P, Ouchterlony, F and Moser, P, 2015. "The high rate of failure of new mine developments to meet feasibility study expectations has been the subject of many fine technical papers. Yet failure rates remain stubbornly high.Similarly, the common occurrence of disastrous acquisitions resulting from failed due diligence on projects is well known. Yet such mistakes continue to be made.The authors argue that project and due diligence failure are caused at least partly by cognitive biases. These biases pervade decision-making throughout project evaluations.A wider understanding of these biases (and their effects) is necessary. Only then can mitigating actions be taken.The opportunity for this wider understanding exists. A number of best-selling books have been published on the topic in recent years. With wider understanding of key concepts and terms, cognitive biases can be recognised and discussed. They can also be challenged and mitigated.The authors believe that these concepts should be entry-level, required knowledge for anyone evaluating, developing, reviewing or financing mining projects.Perhaps the most prevalent biases in project evaluation failure are the ‘over-optimism’ biases. In particular, the planning fallacy and confirmation bias.The anchoring effect is also pervasive. This bias propagates unrealistic assumptions from scoping and prefeasibility studies through to so-called definitive feasibility studies. Unrecognised anchoring biases also undermine the validity of many ‘independent’ due diligence reviews. They are also prevalent in corporate acquisitions.The availability heuristic refers to a mental shortcut that can lead to a number of biases. One of these is the narrative fallacy. The mind constructs coherent narratives and opinions, regardless of the amount and quality of the information that support them. Narrative fallacy commonly occurs in the evaluation of social and political risk. Another is disaster neglect, which is especially common in the failure to assess risks associated with tailings management.This paper outlines the relevance of these biases to mine project evaluations. This paper describes model-scale bench blasts on mortar blocks with distorted drill hole patterns, done in 2013–2014 at the Montanuniversitaet Leoben. The main aim of the project is to see if the fragmentation from and the crack development behind blasts with and without drill hole deviations differ significantly.The dimensions of the test blocks were 660 × 280 × 210 mm (L × W × H). They were mounted inside a yoke that allows the blast waves to escape (see Figure 1). Three rows in each block were shot row by row with a nominal pattern of B × S = 70 × 95 mm. The same nominal delay 73 µs (ie 1 ms per m burden) between holes was used throughout. Blocks with holes of stochastic collar position errors (variations in burden or in burden and spacing but constant row volume) and systematically shifted collar positions (blasts with staggered pattern) were shot. The results were compared to reference blocks without collar deviations.Apart from the sieving analysis, the remaining bench faces were measured with a stereo-photogrammetric method and horizontal roughness profiles for each row were constructed. Sawing slabs from block remains after the third row and use of dye penetrant allowed the study of internal blast damage.The analysis showed that none of the changes in borehole collaring had a significant effect on the sieving curve (median). The sieving results confirm earlier findings though that the fragmentation gets finer with the number of rows shot, implying that blast damage from earlier rows has an influence on the blasting results. The tests demonstrated that the nequiv (equivalent n-value) has increased ten per cent by shooting staggered pattern and decreased by seven per cent by pattern with burden and spacing errors. For the rest of the patterns, the nequiv was roughly the same.The surface roughness investigation showed that a smooth surface was achieved by the staggered pattern. The other deviations patterns did not show a clear trend.The internal blast damage, which was measured in the remaining part of blocks, showed that out of eleven, four crack families seemed to be most affected by blasting. During the past two years, a large number of creep tests has been carried out on electrolytic lead, special assay lead and ordinary refined (Port Pirie) lead. Some of these tests have already been reported.1§ In addition, an attempt has been made to estimate the influence of the individual elements present in small traces in Port Pirie lead. The present paper gives the results obtained when small additions are made to "U" lead of the composition shown in Table 1.(which has been used throughout these investigations during the past few years). The additions were silver, antimony, bismuth and zinc. The results of the addition of tellurium have already been communicated. This investigation was intended to run parallel with a similar one using electrolytic lead as a basis and adding one element at a time.Actually, the experiments using "U" lead have got rather ahead of the others. The important point has emerged, however, that the effect of a .given addition may be appreciably influenced by the presence of traces of other elements.In most of these tests, an initial stress of 500lb. per sq. in. has been used. High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) have been used for more than 20 years to grind iron ore pellet feed. Besides coarse comminution (crushing), where HPGR are installed upstream of the ball mill, there are numerous flow sheets where HPGR are used after ball milling and dewatering for re- or finish grinding.There is a clear growing interest in grinding of pellet feed with HPGR during the last few years. In addition to their known advantages of low specific energy consumption, high availability, low steel consumption and improved pelletising processes the lower environmental load (reduced or no water consumption) became a strong driving factor for the application of HPGR in pellet feed grinding.This growing demand increases the interest in better understanding of the HPGR grinding process with fine iron ore concentrates. One of the most important process parameters is the moisture content of the feed material which influences the performance of the HPGR enormously. The HPGR can react to fluctuations of the fresh feed properties to a certain degree by adjusting grinding force and roller speed. Nevertheless, there are limitations by the physics of the compression process and the capability of water absorption by the concentrate. The capability varies for different concentrates and different specific surface areas. This paper suggests the models for determination the optimum life of machines on the basis of sum and difference of investment and maintenance costs. The economic-mathematical models are based on complex percentage method taking into account the time factor of referring cost. The following strategies of maintenance policy have been considered in machines repair: a strategy without investment, a strategy with continuous investment and a strategy with step-like investment. The effect of value of investment in repairing and time interval of investment on optimum machine exploitation life has also been considered. An illustrative example is presented.

The acid neutralisation capacity (ANC) of rock sample containing significant iron carbonates and/or reactive framboidal pyrite can be a difficult parameter to determine. Results indicated that negative ANC results can occur if reactive sulfide minerals are present; and an over-estimation of ANC will result if significant Fe rich carbonate minerals are present during industry standard ANC tests. In this paper we investigate these problems. Results showed that a significant lag period may be needed (up to 432 hours) after standard Sobek ANC type tests of siderite for the complete hydrolysis of iron released from this mineral. This even occurred with standard industry modifications that included the addition of two drops of hydrogen peroxide. In this work we use a modified Sobek test that included filtering, and thence continued hydrogen peroxide addition until there was no subsequent pH drop, followed by back titration to pH 7.0. Results indicated that the ANC for the siderite (after zero hours) was immediately comparable to the ANC determined after 432 hours lag by standard Sobek type tests; and a calculated theoretical carbonate ANC. Investigations of coal waste samples containing significant framboidal pyrite indicated that standard Sobek ANC type tests can result in negative ANC values due to the oxidation of this reactive pyrite. Because sulfide acidity is already addressed by the MPA calculation, the inclusion of sulfide acidity as part of the ANC determination is effectively biased towards acid generation and thus positive NAPP values. Negative ANC values cannot be ignored or assumed to be zero as this masks any actual ANC available within the sample, which may possibly affect AMD categorisation. This sulfide acidity can be factored out using the quantity of S in the ANC digestion liquor and knowing the non-acid generating sulfate content of the sample prior to ANC testing. Results indicated that incomplete iron hydrolysis at the completion of the Modified Sobek ANC test is not only a function of iron carbonate dissolution, but is also related to the dissolution of Fe-sulfate salts, and the oxidation of reactive sulfides such as framboidal pyrite.

Sticking and breakage of iron ore pellets during high temperature reduction can result in several operational challenges during shaft furnace ironmaking. With the shift to H2-based DRI processes and decreasing iron ore quality, this issue becomes more prominent. It is therefore important to understand how the iron ore chemistry and mineralogy affects the sticking and breakage of pellets inside the shaft furnace. This study provides a review of the mechanisms that lead to sticking and breakage of pellets inside the shaft furnace. The sticking index of pellets is related to the rate of metallic iron production as well as the precipitation morphology of product iron. Sticking of pellets is also enhanced by the formation of low-melting slag phases. The breakage of pellets inside the shaft furnace is often associated with the mechanical load of burden and pellet swelling, which is caused due to iron whisker or protruded iron formation. This paper investigates how the composition of iron ore, particularly the presence of different impurity oxides such as SiO2, Al2O3, MgO, CaO and alkali oxides in the pellets, influences the sticking and swelling indices. The effect of ore mineralogy on these adverse behaviours is also discussed.

The high cost of gateroad repairs and maintenance in U.K. longwall coalmining is a clear indication of the failure of permanent support systems to fulfill their prime function, i.e. control of strata movement. The main component of gateroad support is the pack, the design and materials of which have experienced an important development process during the last 10-15 years. More recently, research investigators have attempted to give a design basis to pack quality and dimension, and reference is made to two theoretical approaches. In the course of a current research programme based upon in situ monitoring, interim design recommendations have been proposed as a means of effecting improvement in support efficiency. Identification of characteristic deformation behaviour forms the basis of the recommendations made and the subsequent improvement in gateroad performance reported.

By explosion rock mass behaviour is conditioned by preset complex of rocks natural characteristics. Very important role of blockness, which is percent (share) content at examining massif of natural separatenesses of different dimensions and configurations, separated each from other by the cracks of geological and technogene origin. Besides natural properties of massif the power, detonational characteristics of applied explosives, parameters of explosives charges disposition at massif and technology of explosion influence vastly at lumpiness (granulometric structure) of exploded rocks. The mathematical model of rock mass destruction by explosion had been elaborated and substantiated. It ties mutually the initial data (rocks properties, parameters of the charges disposition) and final results of explosion (granulometric structure of exploded rocks). The program of this complicated problem solving had been compiled. Analysing the received results of the problem solving, one can reveal contribution of each group of influence factors for lumpiness of exploded rocks. This fact creates preconditions for elimination or diminution of negative role of some controlled initial data.

The use of saline water for mineral beneficiation in arid regions is general practice and also the case with Exxaro Namakwa Sands, situated on the west coast of South Africa. Although it is ‘cost effective’ to use sea water for mineral beneficiation, downstream process separation efficiencies may be negatively affected. This is more specific to surface dependent separation techniques such as electrostatic and high tension (HT) separation. If minimal fresh water is available then, proper washing is often neglected. Salt crystals can form on particle surfaces during the drying process before electrostatic separation.This paper describes a study that has been conducted to determine the effect of upfront salt water processing on downstream electrostatic/HT separation. The study indicated that minor quantities of salt can cause the separation efficiency to decrease substantially.

Fresh air intake in an underground coal mine is of critical importance to the occupational health and safety of workers due to the dynamic, confined and dangerous nature of the mining environment. In most coal mines in South Africa, belt road is not separated from the fresh air intake to the sections. Intake air to coal production faces generally contains dust generated by conveyor belts, transfer points and travelling roads. Long roadways (up to a few kilometres in some of the existing mines) to the coal sections are involved in the ventilation circuits of individual sections. This leads to a progressive increase in the dust levels in the intake fresh air and thus high dust levels in the air delivered to the working sections downstream. In the process of reducing worker exposure to dust in the face area, attention to the monitoring of fresh intake air is generally given a low priority. This paper summarises the intake dust levels measured in selected South African underground coal mining sections over the past five years and its use as a parameter in assessing worker exposure to dust through a newly developed model called the Dust Exposure Level Index (DELI). Based on the measured data of the South African coal mines, the average section intake dust level was 0.78 mg/m3. Approximately 60 per cent of the samples collected for the study have exceeded the 0.5 mg/m3. The intake dust level measured at a longwall face was much higher than in the CM headings. The measured section intake dust levels furnish the South African coal mining industry with the latest depiction of the level of face area dust contamination due to the intake air. Further, this paper demonstrates the use of intake dust level as a parameter in estimating exposure levels of workers, as it clearly plays as a corner stone in effective control of exposure to face area respirable dust. It must be borne in mind that intake dust is a base level to the mine worker exposed to dust without carrying out any additional work in the section. If the intake air is seriously contaminated by airborne respirable dust; then the exposure of the workforce in the section will constantly be elevated by that background dust level.
