"This first chapter of the SPOC Manual 1s intended as a general introduction to all the other chapters in which the mineral process evaluation and optimization methodology is presented. This chapter also provides a brief description of available software for mainframe and m1crocomputers and provides information on its distribution by the Technology Information Division. Substantial efforts to develop application software based on years of research on process modelling are being pursued in many countries ( 1 .2,3,4.5). The late BO's should see a flurry of success stones about significant leaps of productivity achieved in several plants through systematic process evaluation and computer simulation studies.In Canada. the SPOC project (Simulated Processrng of Ore and Coal) was initiated at CAN MET in 1980 with the obJective of developing and transferrrng to the mineral rndustry a computer-based methodology for process evaluation and optimization. The proiect deliverables include:- an engineering manual covering most aspects of off-line computer simulation:- a bank of FORTRAN software accessible through data communication lines for user familiarization and distributed at a nominal cost in source form by CANMETThe yearly progress reports of the project contain detailed information on the project elements since 1980 16). The context of SPOC can be summed up by quoting Gordon Agar""s 1975 statement during a workshop on research needs in the mineral industry: ""What is needed is a joint effort between the academic community and one or more enliglitened industrial concerns. The effort will have to be an iterative one with data collection followed by testing the model modification of the model (s), more testing prediction, modification. data collection and so on (7). A few parallel in1- t1atives had been reported in papers or research contract reports (8, 9) but there was an obvious need for CANMET to bridge the gap between the R&D and the production sectors by undertaking a project that would document past applications and induce a new generation of initiatives through the consol1dat1on and transfer of suitable manuals and software. The effort took shape as the CANMET SPOC pro1ect in which methodology transfer was to play a key role (10)."

Controlling dust generation and keeping it below permissible limits to meet federal dust standards at the working face of a roomand-pillar coal mine is a challenge for a mine operator. With the recent changes in federal dust regulations requiring lower worker exposure, maintaining compliance has become increasingly difficult. The current most effective practice of dust control at a continuous miner face in an underground mine is the use of a flooded-bed scrubber. A study carried out by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) indicated that a flooded-bed scrubber could achieve cleaning efficiencies between 58 and 90%. But, the operation of such a system is maintenance intensive. The flooded-bed scrubber screen becomes clogged with dust particles and requires frequent cleaning to maintain performance. However, the dust control issue is not solely a mining industry problem. Other industries face similar issues. The University of Kentucky collaborated with Toyota Motor Manufacturing on the development of a novel wet scrubber, called the vortecone scrubber, for capturing oversprayed paint particles in automotive paint booths. The vortecone scrubber achieved a cleaning efficiency of 99% and required minimal maintenance. This study aims to assess the ability of this vortecone scrubber to capture respirable dust in an underground coal mine. The paper presents the results of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modeling of this vortecone scrubber. It discusses the effects of air quantity and dust particle size on the performance of the scrubber.

"The development of the Cerro Verde, Amplats Mogalakwena and Boddington projects over the last few years has helped to establish the use of high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) in comminution circuit designs in large-scale hard-rock applications. The increasing acceptance of this innovative and sometimes controversial technology has had the natural effect of prompting many other new projects to examine HPGR as an alternative to the established, usually SAG-based, comminution circuit design approach.At the current stage of development of the technology, HPGR-based circuit capital costs are generally higher than for the equivalent SAG-based circuit, so that HPGR must offer sufficient operating cost benefits to offset the additional capital costs over an acceptable pay-back period. It is usually necessary to undertake comprehensive project-specific trade-off studies to quantify this effect.This paper describes the processes involved in the execution of a typical SAG-HPGR trade-off study, from the preliminary assessment of ore characteristics and project criteria, through testwork, circuit modelling, equipment selection and cost estimates, to a project-economics comparative assessment of the options. The trade-off study determines both the technical feasibility of the respective technologies and their commercial viability in the given project setting.The paper concludes with a cautionary note to the effect that, while HPGR has many potential benefits, it is not a panacea, and that, for some ore types and project conditions, the more established conventional technologies are often more appropriate."

During the past three years, a new rear-dumping dragline bucket technology has been patented, developed and tested at North Dakota coal mines. Field testing has shown that this new concept in dragline bucket technology can improve strip-mining efficiencies by reducing cycletimes and increasing dumping radius. This article details the process, participants and the results for the development of a rear-dumping dragline bucket. Participants in the process In November 1995, the board of directors of Dakota Coal authorized the execution of a field test and option agreement and a license agreement with the partnership of D.F. Schmidt, electrical/maintenance supervisor, and Bill Lengenfelder, president of Modern Industrial. The board also authorized entering into a dragline bucket field-testing agreement with the Falkirk Mining Co.

Improving Pelletisation of Pyrite Cinder by High Pressure Roller Grinding As an important secondary resource for ironmaking, pyrite cinder is characterised by coarse particle size, low specific surface area, high porosity and poor surface activity, which leads to high bentonite dosage, low strength and too high moisture of green balls and high roasting temperature. In this paper, a study of improving the pelletisation of pyrite cinder containing feed by using high pressure roll grinding (HPRG) was presented, which aimed to improve the quality of green pellets and reinforce roasting performance pellets. It is shown that pyrite cinder is characterised by complicated mineral compositions dominated by haematite and metal sulfides, porous surface and middle class ballability, leading to higher balling moisture, higher bentonite dosage and higher firing temperature for pellet hardening. The pelletisation of pyrite cinder can be improved by high pressure roller grinding and blending with magnetite in the pellet feed. The former is probably ascribed to the increase in specific surface areas of pellet feed from 850 cm2+g to 1690 cm2+g when the pellet feed passes through roller twice. Good quality green balls and fired pellets can be made from feed comprising 40 - 60 per cent pyrite cinder and 60 - 40 per cent magnetite concentrate at small scale under the following conditions: 1.2 per cent bentonite, feed passing through roller twice at 7 per cent moisture at 1.5 ton pressure, balling at 13 per cent moisture for 13 min, preheating at 1050¦C for 12 min and firing at 1300¦C for 8 min. Green balls possess such properties as drop numbers of 6.5 times, compressive strength of 19.1 Newton and thermal shock temperature of 533¦C. Fired pellets are imparted high compressive strength of over 3000 Newton per pellet. Small scale tests have been proven by pilot scale tests that high grade fired pellets are made, assaying 63 per cent Fe and minor other impurities, such as sulfur and phosphorus except for copper content. The fired pellets made of three blends possess excellent metallurgical performance, such as reducibility index higher than 65 per cent, reduction swelling index lower than 15 per cent and low temperature reduction degradation lower than2 per cent. Especially the compressive strength after reduction is higher 719Newton per pellet.

This paper, describing the concentrator practice of the Moctezuma Copper Co., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of Mines. The Nacozari concentrator of the Moctezuma Copper Co. (the Mexican subsidiary of the Phelps Dodge Corporation) is located about 75 miles south of Douglas, Ariz., in the Moctezuma District of the State of Sonora. Nacozari is the southern terminus of the Nacozari Railroad, ever which all concentrate is transported to Douglas for smelting.

Remediation of contaminated soil represents a significant market for application of Deep Soil Mixing (DSM). Eighty-one percent of U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Superfund Program’s site remedies have involved contaminated soil. Contaminated soil is frequently treated by In-situ Solidification/Stabilization (ISS). ISS treatment of contaminated soil involves mixing binding agents into soil using DSM techniques. DSM is a core business for many DFI members. Members may improve and broaden their services to clients by learning about the recent ISS treatment of contaminated soil at a Superfund site. ISS treatment is part of the EPA-selected remedy for a Superfund Site in the metro New York City area. The property has seen heavy industrial use for more than a century. Soil at the site is contaminated with a variety of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) including coal tars and heavy metals, principally arsenic and lead. Beginning in 2017 and continuing through 2018, approximately 150,000 cubic yards (115,000 cubic meters) of soil will be treated by ISS at the case study site. Portland cement and slag cement are mixed into the soil by DSM techniques using GPS guided excavators to immobilize the hazardous constituents within the treated soil. ISS treatment by DSM will contribute to redevelopment of this valuable property. This paper will describe ISS constructability and performance, case study grout mix design with geotechnical results for strength and permeability, and deep soil mixing techniques. INTRODUCTION In-situ solidification and stabilization (ISS) is a deep soil mixing (DSM) technique applied in the environmental remediation field to physically encapsulate, or chemically bind, contaminates of concern such that the impacts to human health and the environment are mitigated. Common remediation applications of ISS include mixing cementitious reagents into contaminated soils to form a monolithic mass with desired performance characteristics, and the installation of vertical subsurface walls designed to control groundwater movement. A key characteristic of ISS is that the contaminated soils are treated in their existing location at the project site and then are left in place after treatment. Typical performance characteristics of the ISS treated soils include improved unconfined compressive strength (UCS), reduced hydraulic conductivity (HC), and reduced leaching potential of soil contaminants. Increased shear resistance of the treated soil may also be a performance requirement where seismic loading is a concern.

A shortage of technical skills in all areas of the mining industry is being experienced worldwide. This has significant consequences for design, operations, productivity and safety and, therefore, needs to be seriously addressed, both in the short and longer term. It is therefore both a strategic and a tactical issue. Importantly, however, since mining is a long-term business, the shortage of skills must be dealt with from a strategic point of view to ensure the supply of the necessary skills for future mining. This paper will deal specifically with the provision of high level technical skills, that is, university graduates in mining engineering, and the outlook for the institutions that are currently producing such graduates.

Seismic networks in deep gold mines of South Africa are often planar owing to the tabular geometry of the orebody and, therefore, the mining infrastructure. Consequently, seismic event locations are poorly constrained in the direction perpendicular to the reef plane, and symmetrical locations above and below the reef plane may fit the observed data equally well. This problem may be resolved in situations where the strata above and below the reef plane have significantly different seismic velocities, which is the case for the Ventersdorp Contact Reef at Kusasalethu mine (previously Elandskraal, the amalgamation of Deelkraal and Elandsrand). A location method using a layered location model that takes into account the velocity contrast between the layers was tested. Observed direct- and head-waves were used to determine the velocity bounds of the P-wave velocities in the two-layer model. The data-set was also used to find the best P- and S-wave velocities for the two layers by grid searching over a range of velocities and minimizing the sum of the travel-time residuals. The results from the grid search and those from the calibration of velocities using direct- and head-waves give similar P-wave velocities for each of the two layers. A second set of seismic events was then relocated with this layered model and locations closer to reef were found. This simple layered location method goes some way to reduce the reefperpendicular location errors for Kusasalethu mine in particular. Keywords mine seismology, velocity model, location methods.

"Abstract - Detrital minerals of upper mantle origin occur in Holocene conglomerates, pediments and antmounds, and in Oligocene conglomerates in the Green River Basin of southwestern Wyoming. The minerals are derived from disaggregated eclogite and peridotite, and are similar to minerals found in mantle- derived igneous rocks such as kimberlite and lamproite, the primary host rocks for diamond. The Green River Basin bisects the lamproite fields of the Leucite Hills (Wyoming) and Kamas (Utah) and overlies the Archean Wyoming craton, which makes the region favorable for diamond occurrence. Lamproite is the favored host for the indicator minerals because unusual high-Fe salitic diopside macrocrysts from the antmounds and from the ~1 Ma old Leucite Hills lamproites to the northeast are compositionally identical. The salitic diopside is uncommon in other igneous rocks and could be a new indicator mineral for use in lamproite exploration. The Green River Basin indicator minerals are eroded from the ~29 Ma old Bishop Conglomerate, whose source area is the Uinta Mountains to the south. No continuous mineral train exists between the Uinta occurrences and those in the Green River Basin. Assessment of the minerals using established and new geochemical criteria indicate that they formed in an oxidizing upper mantle and were transported to the surface by either kimberlite or lamproite. The existence of cogenetic diamond is unlikely based on the mineral chemistry, but selective removal of diamond indicator minerals through weathering and fluvial transport cannot be excluded. Diamonds and mantle garnets are present in the northeastern Uinta Mountains, but they originated as part of the Diamond Hoax of 1872. A representative mineral assemblage from the true igneous host of the indicator minerals is required to fully establish their economic potential. Post-Oligocene erosion and Pleistocene glaciation have hindered efforts to locate a bona fide igneous source for the indicator minerals. Résumé - Des minéraux détritiques provenant du manteau supérieur ont été trouvés dans des conglomérats, des pédiments et des monticules de fourmis de l’Holocéne, et dans des conglomérats de l’Oligocène du Green River Basin, au sud-ouest du Wyoming. Ces minéraux sont issus du démantellement d’éclogites et de péridotites, et sont semblables aux minéraux trouvés dans des roches ignées provenant du manteau, comme les kimberlites et les lamproïtes. Ces dernières sont les roches hôtes du diamant. Le Green River Basin recoupe les champs à lamproïte de Leucite Hills, au Wyoming et de Kamas en Utah, et il surmonte le craton archéen du Wyoming, connu pour la présence de ses diamants. "The ability to codeposit fillers within a nickel matrix has led to the production of a new generation of cermet coatings with properties useful for various applications. Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) is a ceramic-type particulate matter with thermal conductivity, thermal stability, inertness, and lubricity properties that allow it to be codeposited. In this paper, a method was developed for modifying hBN surfaces to allow them to be uniformly dispersed in water-based solutions such as an electroless nickel plating bath. hBN surface modification improved wear performance of the electroless plated cermet due to enhanced interaction between the particulate and nickel matrix. RÉSUMÉ La capacité à effectuer un dépôt simultané de charges dans une matrice nickel a abouti à la production d’une nouvelle génération de revêtements cermet (une combinaison de céramique et de métal) dotés de propriétés très utiles pour diverses applications. Le nitrure de bore hexagonal (h-BN) est une matière particulaire de type céramique utilisée pour ses excellentes conductivité et stabilité thermiques, son inertie ainsi que son caractère lubrifiant, qui permettent son dépôt simultané. Cet article explore une méthode mise au point pour modifier les surfaces du h-BN de manière à ce qu’elles se répandent uniformément dans des solutions aqueuses telles qu’un bain de dépôt autocatalytique de nickel. La modification des surfaces du h-BN a amélioré la résistance à l’usure du placage autocatalytique du cermet en raison d’une interaction accrue entre la matière particulaire et la matrice nickel.INTRODUCTION Electroless nickel alloy coatings can be used for many applications; however, the need for improved tribological properties such as higher wear resistance and better lubricity has increased interest in incorporating particulates (fillers) into the nickel matrix by codepositing the particulates with nickel during the plating process. The selection of the particulate type depends on the desired properties (Sahoo & Das, 2011; Sudagar, Lian, & Sha, 2013). In terms of tribological applications, electroless nickel-based composites are categorized mainly into lubricating and wear-resistant composite coatings depending on the type of particles incorporated. The electroless nickel-phosphorus (Ni-P) composite coatings are composed of codeposited solid lubricants such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), graphite, WS2, MoS2, and hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and, compared to nanocomposite electroless Ni-P coatings, they demonstrate a lower coefficient of friction. On the other hand, the nickel-phosphorus wear-resistant composite coatings are composed of hard particles such as silicon carbide (SiC), aluminum oxide (Al2O3), boron carbide (B4C), silicon nitride (Si3N4), diamond, tungsten carbide (WC), and zirconium oxide (ZrO2) and, compared to nanocomposite electroless Ni-P coatings, they have higher hardness and better wear resistance (Sahoo & Das, 2011; Sudagar et al., 2013; Parucker, Klein, Binder, Ristow, & Binder, 2014; Chakarova, Georgieva, Petrova, Dobreva, & Stoychev, 2016)."

Many challenges are faced by workers in lower-seam (42 inches or less) mines. The lower-seam heights confine mine workers to their knees as they perform their daily tasks such as installing roof bolts, delivering supplies, repairing belt, or cutting coal. Miners working in these lower seams often consider kneepads to be their only line of defense against knee injuries. However, healthy knees do not start and stop with kneepads. Other interventions such as changing postures, proper hygiene, and work station design may also be used to reduce mine workers? risks for developing knee injuries. Incorporating these and many other interventions into a mine worker?s ?way of life? is an important step to ensuring a long, healthy career and retirement. Keeping knees healthy is also a key aspect to reducing costs in low-seam mines as the industry battles rising health care costs, and training/recruitment of replacement workers is time-consuming and costly. Educating the workforce about the possible interventions to reduce knee injury risk is a primary objective for the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health?s (NIOSH) Pittsburgh Research Laboratory (PRL). Therefore, NIOSH researchers, along with industry and academia, developed a training package to educate the mining community about some possible interventions beyond kneepads that may be used to help decrease knee injury rates. Increased awareness and simple changes are the first steps to reducing knee injuries.

Fracture initiation and propagation, being one of the most intensive subjects in rock mechanics; contribute significantly to the deformation of jointed rock masses. An experimental study on fractured granitic rock was carried out to determine the peak strength of specimen under triaxial loading conditions. The commonly observed failure mode for rock specimens in this study was found to be the shearing of the plane of weakness. The minimum peak strength of fractured rock is observed when the joint orientation is approximately 70° to the horizontal axis. Based on experimental test data, an empirical expression was developed to accommodate the effect of joint orientation and joint trace length in estimating the peak strength of fractured rocks. The predicted values of peak strength using the proposed equation well agree with the experimental results carried out on singly fractured specimens under triaxial loading conditions. The threshold stress values of crack initiation and propagation depend on joint geometrical parameters, their degree of interconnectivity, as well as surrounding stresses on the fracture plane.

The froth foam seal topping system is part of a system for remote sealing of mine passages using flyash transported pnuematically from the surface. Making the final 5 percent of the seal with a foamed-in-place fire retardant polyurethane reduces the required flyash volume by 50 percent and provides a more reliable seal. Foam components are held at the surface under proper conditions of temperature and pressure; then conveyed down the borehole through individual hoses and mixed at the bottom with a static mixer. The polyol component is pre-mixed with fluorocarbon-12 which, when released from system pressure in the mixer, boils and causes the foam to expand. Difficulties in handling this particular foam formulation are offset by a flame spread index well below the 25 level by ASTM E-162 normally required for under-ground applications. Isocyanate, polyol (TDI) and catalyst are conveyed to the downhole package by three separate lines. Five additional lines operate the valving and convey solvent so that the mixer and package lines can be flushed immediately after foaming. The eight-hose bundle is provided in segments of several lengths so that bore-hole depths can be matched. Cast-in-place plastic cylinders hold the bundle together and transfer the weight of the hose through a special quick-release clamp to the crane's wire rope. The downhole package and hose bundle are deployed using a specially designed winch and crane system capable of borehole deployment to 1500 feet.

Purification of Nickel and Cobalt from Heap Leaching Effluents Using Ion Exchange Resins A comparative study among several chelating resins for purification of a heap leaching effluent from a nickel laterite ore has been finished. Chelating resins with iminodiacetate (IDA) and bis-picolylamine (Bis-PA) functional groups, from different suppliers, have been evaluated for their selectivity and loading capacities for nickel and cobalt over impurities. The two evaluated IDA resins, Amberlite IRC 748 and Monoplus TP 207, showed very similar results for both loading capacity and selectivity. Better performance was obtained at 7 BV/h at a pH of 4. Evaluation of Bis-PA resin showed that XUS 43578 has better performance than TP 220, with a 30 per cent higher loading capacity and superior selectivity for nickel over impurities.

This paper deals with the analysis of pillar failure in a room and pillar mining operation of a deep underground coal mine. The incident here involved the failure of more than 100 pillars. The mechanism of pillar failure (bump/squeeze) has been studied in detail. The analysis consists of inmine eyewitness observations, laboratory experiments and analytical study of the pillar failure area using finite element technique. Results indicated that the mechanical properties of coal, roof and floor, geologic condition, and the method of operation have affected the mode of pillar failure. Hard roof and floor prevented roof caving and floor heaving in the gob area creating an inhomgeneous stress field on the pillar. This condition developed a yield zone and a core zone in the pillar. Progressive increase of vertical stress further increased the yield zone of the pillar and reduced the core pillar leading to a total squeeze of the pillar. However, the analysis indicated that the pillars were liable to bump provided any sudden shift of load occurred on the core pillar due to some dynamic shock imparted by a local failure of the immediate roof (slickenslided area) or during splitting.

Minerals are fundamental to the U.S. economy, contributing to the real gross domestic product (GDP) at several levels?mining, processing and manufacturing finished products. The estimated growth rate for the real GDP of the United States was 2.1 percent and the nominal GDP was about $13.8 trillion in 2007 (Table 1). The prime interest rate decreased to 7.25 percent in December from 8.25 percent at the beginning of 2007, reflecting actions taken by the Federal Reserve Board to counter financial difficulties surrounding subprime mort-gages. Delinquencies on subprime mortgages increased throughout the year, affecting not only the delinquent home owners but also financial instruments invested in mortgage-backed securities. The average contract mortgage rate for the purchase of previously occupied homes in the United States was 6.35 percent in November; a slight decrease from 6.37 percent in January but still greater than 5.34 percent reported in July 2003, the lowest rate in the past five years. Based on the geological-geometric characterization of the basaltic rock at the site of a factory for chemical products situated in the Southern region of Brasil, and on results of a significant number of packer tests, the principal directions of flow were estimated, taking into consideration the intersection and the orientation of the joints and the amount of contaminant flow measured in each interval. The tests were performed using the multi-packer hydraulic multitest probe of IPT (HMTP) instrumented with an electric conductivity meter. A method of analysis for three-dimensional evaluation of the amount of contaminant flow in the area was proposed for future mitigation of the problem. Basé sur une caractérization géologique-géotechnique de la roche basaltique existant sur un site dune fabrique de produits chimiques située au sud du Brésil et sur les resultants dún nombre significantif déssais du type packer, les directions principales d´écoulement ont été estimées en considerant l´intersection et orientation des joints et la quantité de contaminant mesurée sur chaque intervale d´essais. Ceux-ci ont été realizes en utilisant une sonde multipacker developée au IPT – São Paulo (HMTP) instrumentée avec un mesureur de condictivité électrique. Une méthode d´analyse 3-D pour l´évaluation du transport du contaminant sur ce site a été proposée pour une future mitigation du problème. Auf Grund der geologischen Struktur des Basalts auf dem Gelände einer chemischen Fabrik in Südbrasilien und der Ergebnisse einer ansehnlichen Zahl von Pumpversuchen wurden die Hauptfließrichtungen bestimmt unter Berücksichtigung des Kluftgefüges und der in jedem Intervall gemessenen Menge kontaminierten Wassers. Die Versuche erfolgten mit dem im IPT entwickelten Verfahren (HMTP) mit Mehrfachpackern und elektrischen Leitfähigkeitsgebern. Ein analytisches Verfahren zur dreidimensionalen Ermittlung der Mengen kontaminierten Wassers wurde für die künftige Befassung mit dem Problem entwickelt.

"INTRODUCTION The New Mexico potash exploration described herein was begun in February 1944 with the object of determining the amount of potash ore in the United States Potash Reserve in Eddy County by exploring the deposit from the surface with vertical drill holes. The work was completed in October of the same year after 16 holes had been drilled on the Reserve and in the immediate vicinity.The Potash Reserve is in secs. 26; 27, 34, and 35, T. 20 S., R. 29 E., Eddy County, N. Mex., about 14 miles northeast of Carlsbad, as shown on figures 1 and 1A, Drilling was done in secs. 26 and 35 of the Reserve, in section 14 to the north, end sections 2 and 56 to the east. All work was done on Governnent-owned, unleased land.The Reserve may be reached from Carlsbad by traveling to the north-east by automobile for about 14 miles on the paved U. S. highway 62. This highway passes through the southern part of the Reserve. Other parts may be reached by a State highway that passes along the eastern side of the area, then by poor dirt roads to various drilling sites. A branch of the Santa Fe Railroad also passes across the southern part of the Reserve enroute from Carlsbad to the plant and mine of the Potash Co. of America, a few miles northeast of the project and 22 miles from Carlsbad."
