"The concrete overbreak estimation for bored piles provides the quantification of the shaft’s expansion beyond its theoretical volume. There are stability analysis methods that can be employed before and after concrete pour but as for the moment of decision, during pile cast, the most common method still consists in measuring the rising of the concrete level in order to compare its poured volume with the theoretical pile section volume. This is a determinant parameter to monitor, not only because it assesses the bored shaft stability but also because it represents a direct cost. When analyzing the estimation methods commonly applied on-site it becomes evident that these are often affected by human errors that lead to misleading results. The objective of this paper is to identify those errors and discuss a subject which is usually overlooked. As a general conclusion, it was ascertained that most errors derive from inaccurate volumetric data, working procedures and gauging equipment. By acknowledging these widespread practices deep foundations contractors will be in a better position to make informed decisions on how to correct and improve bored pile stability.GENERALBackgroundWhen executing bored piles, the estimation of its concrete overbreak allows a swift appraisal of the excavation stability during the drilling process. This is simply obtained from the proportion of the poured volume of concrete over the drilled shaft theoretical volume, as shown in equation [1].Where CO = concrete overbreak percentage, Vc = volume of poured concrete, Vr = pile’s theoretical volume. This calculation not only provides a general idea of the shaft’s expansion from its theoretical volume, but also the outline of the excavated column’s geometry. For the latter, the outline will be as accurate as the number of measurements taken for each partial known volume of poured concrete. This means that for each load placed inside the excavation there is a corresponding rising of the concrete level. The profile of the definite pile is then plotted (see Fig. 1) and allows inferring about how stable remained the shaft walls up to the moment of casting.The technological developments in this area have provided other methods for determining pile stability before and after pile cast, such as ultrasonic echo sensing, cross-hole sonic logging or thermal integrity profiling systems. Notwithstanding, concrete overbreak assessment remains as common practice and confers the advantage of providing stability information during the process of pile casting."

Today few in business would argue with the idea that we are living in a world that is Volatile, Uncertain, Complex, and Ambiguous. Coined VUCA by the US Army War College, these four words define the ?turbulence? and ?continuous white water? that the business literature has been documenting for the last decade. This VUCA world became even more relevant to business in 2007 when the Institute for the Future fellow Bob Johansen published the idea of transforming VUCA into Vision, Understanding, Clarity, and Agility. We call this VUCA Prime (VUCA'), and place an infinity loop (8) between them to show their dynamic interaction. This paper presents an exploration of the impact of VUCA 8 VUCA' on business and the conditions under which these dynamic forces help to successfully navigate change.

"This paper reviews the history of modern iron-control processes in hydrometallurgy. Attention is paid to processes developed in the electrolytic zinc industry for removal of iron from zinc sulfate leach liquors and the problems faced by the industry in the safe disposal of the iron residues produced by these processes. Past lessons learned are projected onto current efforts to develop hydrometallurgical processes for treatment of copper sulfide concentrates. It is argued that any attempt to create a “hydrometallurgical copper smelter” will fail, unless methods are developed that can recover iron in a form that can be directly used by the steel or pigment industries.RÉSUMÉ Cet article passe en revue l’histoire des procédés modernes de contrôle du fer en hydrométallurgie. Il accordera une attention particulière aux procédés développés dans l’industrie du zinc électrolytique pour l’élimination du fer dans les liqueurs lixiviantes de sulfate de zinc anhydre, ainsi qu’aux problèmes rencontrés par l’industrie en termes d’élimination sans danger des résidus ferreux générés par ces procédés. That this particular IMPC was to include the 4th Symposium on Iron Control in Hydrometallurgy, a conference series held only every 10 years, made the invitation even more appealing and appropriate. This was because I had been co-chairman of the First Symposium on Iron Control, together with my erstwhile colleague, John Dutrizac, which was held 30 years ago in Toronto."

This report details work performed and results obtained in a study of the water management aspects of oil shale mining and retorting in the Piceance Creek Basin. Three specific sites were investigated, and optimal water management systems for both conventional and in-situ extraction processes were generated. Water-related legal and environmental constraints on development were identified and the water management schemes were developed in compliance with these regulations. Limitations on shale oil production implied by limited water supplies were evaluated. Potential Basin-wide effects of development were evaluated using a computer model, and mitigation strategies were developed. Recommendations for additional investigation and analyses were presented.

A portable, stand-alone instrument especially designed for recording strong ground motion was used in this study to create a large database of peak particle velocities measured underground. A total number of 39 sites located in stopes mining Carbon Leader and Ventersdorp Contact Reefs were investigated. Peak particle velocities whith values up to 3 m/s were recorded at some sites. The data recorded on the skin of the excavations were compared to the data recorded by the mine seismic networks to determine the site response. The maximum site response was obtained for source radii of between 5 m and 30 m and events locating within 200 m of the site. The extreme values of peak particle velocities were obtained in cases were the face-area lay within the source radius. Un instrument portable unique spécifiquement conçu pour enregistrer les mouvements dynamiques des terrains, a été utilisé dans cette étude pour créer une base de données importante sur la vélocité maximum des particules, mesurée en souterrain. Un nombre total de 39 sites situés dans les excavations exploitant les récifs appelés ‘Carbon Leader et Ventersdorp Contact Reefs’, a été investigué. Une vélocité maximale avec des valeurs allant jusqu’ à 3 m/s a été enregistrée sur certains sites. Les données enregistrées sur le bord de l’excavation ont été comparées aux données enregistrées par les réseaux séismiques de la mine pour déterminer la réponse du site. La réponse maximum du site a été obtenue pour des sources de rayons entre 5 m et 30 m et des évènements situés dans les 200 m du site. This report describes the performance of Phase I of a project to design, analyze, and demonstrate a multilift longwall mining method applicable to mining coal seams twelve (12) feet or more in thickness. A non-simultaneous multilift operation is the most viable thick seam mining technique for introduction to the United States coal industry. In the case of the proposed site at Emery, Utah it will result in an increase in coal extraction from 30% with present methods to at least 50% and possibly more. The major technological advance involved in this project is mining a lower lift under a previously mined upper lift. To accomplish this, entries must be developed and maintained beneath the upper lift gob. This will necessitate the use of steel supports at frequent intervals throughout the lower lift' entry system. This has not been done in the U.S. to date. An economic analysis of the project indicates that, while this method will result in a higher than average cost per ton for coal mined, the coal would be competitive with current-operation in the area.

"This paper reviews flowsheets generally used in gold rooms to upgrade primary gravity concentrates particularly those of Knelsons. It is concluded that even for small operations, which treat between 250 and lo00 kg of concentrates per day, there is a strong economic incentive to include in the flowsheet magnetic removal of tramp iron, at least two shaking tables, screening of either table feed or table tails at 150-212 um, and scavenging of table tails with a small centrifuge. Headroom, rather than floor space, is often inadequate in most gold room designs, and limits gravity flow and flowsheet flexibility. Experimental data are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of a small Knelson Concentrator to scavenge significant amounts of gold (up to 91 %) from fine table tails.RésuméCet article examine les schémas d’évolution généralement utilisés pour traiter les concentres gravimétriques d‘or, en particulier ceux produits par concentrateur Knelson. A computer program has been developed by Newmont Exploration to convert mineralogic data by XRD into rock type and ore type classifications. This method has proven useful in identifying lithology from cuttings samples, where percussion drilling was an alternative to expensive core drilling. Computer printouts of rock type and ore type identifications can be generated simultaneously with mineralogic analyses, resulting in a considerable time savings in manual calculation. XRD-computer logging was first applied to the Carlin mine in north central Nevada, and later to the Maggie Creek and Gold Quarry gold deposits, southeast of the Carlin mine. Impure Paleozoic limestones of the "lower plate" Roberts Mountain Formation and the "upper plate" transitional facies have been decarbonatized to altered siltstones and shaley units along vertical faults and permeable stratiform horizons. Advanced stages of decarbonatization were accompanied by silicification. Quantitative XRD data are initially sorted into principal rock type units (limestones, siltstones, dolostones, shales) based on major mineralogic components (calcite, quartz, dolomite, clays). On the basis of relative amounts of less major constituents, descriptive subclassifications (dolomitic limestones, dolomitic siltstones, argillaceous cherts) are made. XRD lithologic data provide assistance in correlating lithologic units, and delineating favorable replacement horizons associated with gold mineralization.

The investigations carried on at the fuel-testing plant of the United States Geological Survey at St. Louis in 1904-1907 included tests of the steaming and gas-producing qualities of many coals and of the possibilif3 of their improvement by briquetting, together with washing and coking tests and tests of some of the resulting coke in the cupola. These tests were part of a general inquiry into the manner of utilizing most efficiently each of the coals under investigation. The equipment used in the cupola tests of coke, the manner of conducting the tests, and the essential results have been described in publications of the Geological Survey," and only the more important conclusions to be drawn from the tests are mentioned in the following pages. The tests were made to show the fitness of the cokes for foundry purposes, but an incidentlll result was to show foundry men and the coke producers the advisability of studying the conditions of foundry practice. The present bulletin, published by the Bureau of Mines because the analyzing and testing of fuels have been transferred from the Gilological Survey to the Bureau of Mines, briefly reviews the status of the coke industry, some features of practice in the use of coke in the foundry, the probable happenings of a cupola heat, and the reasons for modifying charging practice so that a particular coke can be used to best advantage.

The Bureau of Mines reviewed current technology in the refractories consuming industries and evaluated the impact of changes in technology on the supply and demand of refractories. Literature was searched and contacts were made with leading consumers and producers of refractories. The distribution of refractories by value of shipments to users was surveyed. The report shows that the percentage distribution of refractories sales to the consuming industries has remained essentially constant during the last decade but that substantial changes have occurred in the relative distribution of types of refractories. The trend in pyroprocessing technology in recent years has been toward higher temperatures, which require more costly refractories. This fact is reflected in the impressive gain in the dollar value of refractories sales, which in 1968 was about one-third greater than in 1960, and the rapid growth of refractories based on high-alumina, magnesia, zirconia, carbon, and other materials, at the expense of fire clay, silica, and chrome- based refractories. An appendix to the report contains refractories value and shipment data tabulated in a manner by which trends in the distribution of refractory types can be observed from 1955 to 1968. In addition, unit values are presented on a per-ton basis for comparison.

Samples of fine coal refuse were obtained from 11 coal preparation plants throughout the United States. These samples were characterized by ash analysis, particle size, and mineral composition. From the characterization, geographical locations, and the dewatering equipment being used by the plants, five sites were selected for obtaining bulk fine refuse samples. The selected coal preparation plants were using for final dewatering thickeners followed by: a vacuum disc filter, a filter press, a belt press filter, a centrifuge, and a settling pond. None were using thermal drying. The moisture content of the final cake varied from approximately 23% to 50% depending upon the feed material, flocculant addition, and the type of equipment. The filter press gave the lowest moisture content followed by a belt press and then either a centrifuge or vacuum filter. The centrifuge products were all dried to an approximate 5% moisture in a thermal dryer.

The conventional method of mining underground, using narrow rooms and wide pillars, has proven to be poorly adapted to the powerful earth forces that act on underground openings. The high costs of roof bolting, timbering, steel arching, and other means of artificial roof support for both room-and--pillar operations and longwall gate roadways attest to the limitations of traditional mine design. Too often, productivity halts when corners buckle under "cutter roof' stresses, floors heave, and roof strata fall. In the 1960s, an entirely different approach to strata control was developed. The Stress Control Method (SCM) stabilizes failing roofs and heaving floors by removing the cause of failure - highly concentrated stresses around the openings. This is achieved by regrouping three to 10 rooms into a single entry where the rooms are separated by very narrow yielding but stable pillars. SCM employs a specified excavation sequence to redirect earth pressures away from the mine openings. The yield pillars act as scaffolding until a permanently protective secondary stress envelope forms around the entry (lower part of Fig. 1). The result is a dramatic improvement in roof stability and a significant reduction in artificial support costs. Some roof bolting must still be done, mainly to meet Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) requirements. Potash, salt, coal mining The stress control method was first applied to the deep potash mines of Saskatchewan. The new SCM design actually increased room widths to enlarge the stress envelope, redistributing the stress concentration away from the entries (Serata and Schultz, 1972). This resulted in a turnaround from pervasive roof fall/floor heave conditions that threatened operations in the eight new mines opened in the Saskatchewan potash field during the 1960s. In addition to eliminating all roof bolting, SCM successfully stabilized ground conditions and substantially increased productivity over the original design (Serata, 1976, 1982). Similarly, the deep Boulby potash mine of Yorkshire, England, was about to close after various conventional means of combating roof failure had failed. An SCM test area was excavated that resulted in the ground quickly stabilizing without need o artificial support (Serata, 1982; Chilton and Laird, 1982). Another example is the Diamond Crystal salt mine in Louisiana. Here, multiple level mining was being extended from the third to the fourth level downward in the Jefferson Island salt dome. Extensive roof failure was occurring at 396 m (1300 ft) ii the third level. SCM design principles in creased the room size from 24 to 49 m (80 t( 160 ft) on the fourth level at a depth of 457 m (1500 ft). This unprecedented expansion of room width was first questioned and later ap¬proved by MS HA, which expressed satisfaction in seeing the improvement documented by field validation data in 1973. The most recent SUM application to salt mining has been in the Michigan Basin a: Goderich, Ontario. The anticipated abandonment of Domtar Chemicals Group/Sifto Salt Division's deep operation in bedded sale was prevented by a multi-year SCM implementation. The success of SCM in dry mining[lecc] to its application to solution mining of salt This adaptation of the method is now being implemented in bedded salt at Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta by Dow Chemical Co., and in St. Clair, MI by International Salt Co. Application of SCM to solution mining in a salt dome is proceeding at Napoleonville. LA by Dow Chemical. The same technology has also been applied to cavern design for the Louisiana Offshore Oil Port (LOOP), and the compressed air energy storage (CAES)

Costs of producing lead from various known resources in the United States are developed by the Bureau of Mines to define the future availability of domestic lead at various price levels. It is estimated that 60 million tons of primary lead (75 percent of the total resource) is available at $0.20 or less per pound; 72 million tons (90 percent of the total) is available at $0.50 or less per pound; and the 79 mil- lion ton total estimated resource can be obtained at a price or $1.82 or less per pound. The supply available at $0.20 per pound or less will meet demand for over 78 years at the 1970 annual consumption rate of 763,000 tons.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the availability of this fourth issue of the IPMI Journal, a publication of the International Precious Metals Educational and Scientific Foundation. This digital peer reviewed publication has been created as a vehicle for the sharing of technical information related to the science and technology of precious metals. Since 1976, the International Precious Metals Institute has championed the exchange of information of critical importance to the precious metals scientific and commercial communities through its various communications vehicles. This has included instructional videos, annual conference symposia, special topic committee meetings, regional seminars, and professional and student achievement awards. Due to the breadth of important topics related to all aspects of precious metals, it has been the vision of the IPMI to provide a publication available to the general public that would become a key source of pertinent topics containing high quality publications by experts in their fields of study. Historically, the IPMI has attracted world renowned experts in many fields (including Nobel Laureates Henry Taube, Ei-ishi Negishi, Robert Grubs, Professor Ben Feringa, and David MacMillan) in the dissemination of discoveries, inventions, and industry proven practices. Such information has a total value greater than the sum of its parts as seemingly unrelated innovations from distinct focus areas can be adapted to solve problems. Because of this important characteristic of information exchange, we have decided to create a digital journal, available to the general public, that will not only communicate state of the art discoveries and sound practices, but will also review historical communications from the IPMI’s archives that have value and use even in today’s environment. On behalf of the members and leaders of the IPMI, we hope you will find value in this new publication.

In this paper a genetic algorithm is used in a heavily jointed rock mass in order to investigate the critical circular slip surface and modification of slope surface. This method was applied to the southern wall of the 6th Golbini Jajarm bauxite mine. The mine is the largest bauxite deposit in Iran, located to the northeast of the town of Jajarm in the Khorasan province. Estimated reserve of bauxite in this deposit is about 160 million tonnes. Field and laboratory investigations were conducted in order to determine rock mass behaviour. A genetic algorithm code that uses the Simplified Bishop method as an objective function was developed for findingt he safety factor of circular slip surfaces. Sensitivity analysis was applied to determine the optimum values of the genetic algorithm variables, such as population size, selection method, crossover and mutation rates. After finding the critical circular slip surface, slope modification is carried out by removing unstable sections from marked critical slip surfaces, and this process is repeated until the last unsafe section is removed. Based on this code, modification occurred during 7 steps, by reaching a safety factor of 1.3 in the last step. Finally, the modified slope angle of the southern wall of the 6th Golbini Jajarm bauxite mine was determined to be 48.44 degrees. "The Vanuatu island arc and its adjacent back-arc basins form part of the southern New Hebrides subduction system in the southwestern Pacific Ocean within a triangle defined by the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and Fiji (Meffre & Crawford 2001). The back-arc region east of the volcanic front is characterized by three structural depressions namely Vate, Erromango, and Futuna (from N to S), also known as the Coriolis Troughs. Earlier studies of lava compositions reveal the occurrence of highly evolved alkali-rich dacites as well as ankaramite basalts within the individual troughs (McConachy et al. 2005).Here we present the first mineralogical and geochemical analyses of hydrothermal fluids and precipitates (sulfides, sulfates, Fe-oxyhydroxides), sediments, and volcanic rocks, sampled during the "Coriolis Volcanism and Vents" (COVOLVE) cruise SO229 in July 2013 aboard the German R/V Sonne. The samples were retrieved during several ROV Kiel 6000 dives directly from the newly discovered active vent sites at the neovolcanic Nifonea Ridge, and from multiple sites at water depths ranging between 200 to 2800 m within the Vate and Futuna Troughs as well as from the shallow water Epi Caldera NNE of the Coriolis Troughs (Fig. 1)."

Man has mined in all his time on earth about 3 billion ounces of gold. About one-half of this has been mined in the past 35 years. This gold is roughly in 3 large holdings: one-third held as reserves in Central Banks; one-third held as personal reserves; and one-third is in jewelry or other fabricated products. The world per capita availability of mined gold is increasing and there are many factors and forces shaping gold's future. Currently, gold has a favorable exchange ratio and this is encouraging many new gold-mining developments. Production is increasing and new techniques are surfacing. The use of gold in the financial markets is increasing in some unique ways and gold is again fulfilling its role as a universal money, making gold's future predictable. Currently, man is mining gold at the rate of approximately 44 million ounces annually and is therefore adding to the total supply of gold approximately 1.5% of newly mined gold each year. This current production plays a small role in the pricing mechanisms since a very large part of the 3 billion ounces mined in all of history is available to the market in one form or another.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines investigated the recovery of tin and silver from the Coal Creek deposit in the Talkeetna Mountains, AK. Approximately 5 million st of reserves grading 0.2 pct Sn with silver credits of 0.2 tr oz/st have been delineated by drilling. A 10-to 25-pct Sn gravity concentrate was produced by treating the minus 20-mesh ore with a spiral, then regrinding to minus 65 mesh and tabling. Sulfide contamination in the gravity concentrate was as high as 60 pet. Sulfide flotation of this concentrate produced tailings containing 40 to 50 pet Sn. Overall recovery was 76 pct for tin but only 5 to 10 pct for silver because of losses during sulfide flotation. Other methods tested to clean the concentrate included cassiterite flotation, gangue flotation, nitric acid leaching, and wet and dry magnetic separation. Tin beneficiation tests on the minus 325-mesh fraction included cassiterite flotation, vanning, sulfide flotation, and fuming. The bench-scale and locked-cycle tests were used to estimate the mass flows for a 1,000-st/d plant.

[Selenium and tellurium are rare elements in the earth's crust. Their scarcity and primary dependence of supply on copper and lead output are in consonance with the relatively small quantities consumed at 1964 level. Production depending on output of copper and lead creates a supply situation- which would appear to militate against development of large-scale usage of these elements. However, supplies have adequately met. demand in the past decade and can be increased substantially if warranted by new uses for either selenium or tellurium Ores of copper and lead re the principal sources of selenium and tellurium. Byproducts from the smelting and refining of copper and lead concentrates are incorporated in refinery anode slimes from which selenium and tellurium metal are recovered.]

Radar imagery has a number of very advantageous features, including all-weather capability; it also has artifacts, such as layover, which require processing before these data may be used to best effect.   This paper gives an outline of SAR, details the image processing required, and discusses the use of the first New Zealand Japan Earth Resources-1 SAR data to aid geological mapping on the Coromandel Peninsula.
