The San Vicente Pipeline Tunnel Project involves the construction of an 8.5-foot-diameter water pipeline in an 11 mile tunnel in San Diego, California. The tunnel is located in extremely variable geologic conditions of strong granitic and volcanic rocks, weak sedimentary rocks, abrasive conglomerates, and mixed face conditions. One reach of the tunnel is a 5,200-foot mixed face reach that includes Friars Formation Conglomerate overlying granitic rock. Due to the variable ground conditions in this reach, the use of a TBM was deemed too risky and the contract documents required drill-and-blast and hand mining methods. Although it was not required, the contractor elected to construct this reach using NATM methods. This paper describes the geology of the 5,200-foot mixed-face reach, the design evaluation, and the construction challenges faced on this project.

The diffusion of such knowledge in the field of sampling metallic metallurgical materials appears to have been quite insufficient, and it is felt that when the principles involved are once thoroughly comprehended their universal application will be appreciated, so that it will make no difference whether pig iron or gold bullion is offered for test. It may further be noted that a discussion of the theories underlying practical methods is placed under the caption "Practical Sampling," with the idea that no one can be a practical sampler unless he is capable of analyzing his methods. No attempt has been made to advocate any one method, but it is hoped that the analyses of all of the methods in use will show where each may be correctly and safely applied. The fact that it is possible to demonstrate the theoretical correctness of several methods indicates the invalidity of the claim that any single one of them is the standard.

The study refers to an area of about 70 km2, extended in the Italian Central Alps along the the San Giacomo Valley where different civil and mining works are present The regional geological setting is related to the Pennidic Nappe arrangement, characterized by the emplacement of sub-horizontal gneissic bodies resulting from the Mesoalpine isoclinalic folding of crystalline basements, emplaced throw East, and separated by matasedimentary cover units. The investigated geological rocks, belong to the ?Tambò?Unit, overlapped by its meta-sedimentary cover and by the ?Suretta? Unit. The tectonic contact gently dips to the E?NE. The valley, furrowed by the Liro Torrent, follows a N?S striking tectonic lineament, almost parallel to the nappe contact. A number of more then 70 sites, distributed in the studied area, were chosen and detailed structural and geomechanical field surveys were performed to characterize the rock masses, its intact rock and discontinuities. The procedure identifies the number of joint sets, their representative orientation, the set spacing, the type of movement, the amount of dilatation, the degree of alteration, the roughness coefficient, the presence and nature of infill. Rock mass quality indexes, such as the Rock Mass Rating (Bieniawski, 1989) or the Geological Strength Index (Hoek et al. 2002) have been evaluated in each surveyed site. The work is a contribute in assessing how the geometrical and geomechanical properties of the rock masses can be regarded as regionalized variables. The spatial distribution of these properties is a function of the geological and structural phenomena at which the rock masses have been subjected. The presented geostatistical analysis regards the spatial variation of the orientation of the most representative joint set.

"Coal mining is a thriving industry and 53% of the coal mined in South Africa is used for electricity generation. Mechanization has made coal mining more efficient, but fines generation has subsequently increased. Up to 6% of the run of mine material can report to the -200 µm fraction. Common problems associated with fines handling include dust formation, storage problems, and high moisture levels. A method to turn this material into a saleable product instead of stockpiling it can add value to a company.Briquetting is a pressure agglomeration method where loose material is compacted into a dense mass (FEECO International, 2014). The briquettes must be able to withstand rigorous handling and transport operations without disintegrating. This study aims to investigate the optimum binder and moisture conditions required to produce a mechanically strong briquette using two different binders - a PVA powder (binder A) and a starch powder (binder B).It was found that for binder A the optimum moisture level was 12% to 14%. At this moisture level the greatest compression strength gains were observed, and low amounts of fines produced in impact and abrasion tests. The minimum amount of binder added while still obtaining a strong briquette was 0.5% binder A. For binder B the optimum moisture level was also 12% and the minimum amount of Binder B to be added was found to be 1%. Briquettes that were dried outside reached their peak strength after about four days, whereas the briquettes that dried inside took about 20 days to reach their strength plateau. Hardly any degradation took place on the surface of the binder A film after exposure of 300 hours of artificial weathering. Thermogravimetric analysis confirmed that neither binder A nor binder B will add to the ash content of the coal fines, as both binders totally decompose above 530°C.Binder B yielded stronger briquettes after 15 days and also generated less fines. Nuclear waste should be disposed with the best warranty for the national health and welfare. Among the several repository systems, the deep underground disposal is considered to be a most suitable system in Korean peninsula. However it demands basically the comprehensive stability analysis such as the behaviour of discontinuities in rock mass, the behaviour of ground water, and the reaction of rock stress according to the heat from the nuclear waste. For these purposes, the underground nuclear waste disposal repository was simulated in two- and three- dimensions. It shows that emphasis will be given to the thermal conductivity of discontinuities and the thermal convection of ground water as well as the thermal stress generated by the nuclear waste for design and construction of repository system, and they should be obtained from the field measurements. Déchets nucléaires devront tre déposés avec la meilleure garantie pour la santé et le bien public. Parmi les plusieurs systèmes de dépôt, la disposition en souterrin profond est considérée au système le plus approprié en Corée. Pourtant ce système demande essentiellement l’analyse éten-due de stabilité comme le comportement des discontinues en masse rocheuse, le comportement de l’eau souterrin et la réaction des contraintes de roche selon la chaleur depuis les déchets nucléaires. Pour ce but, le dépôt des déchets nucléaires en sous-sol a étè simulé en deux et trois dimensions. Il montre que l’accent sera donné à la conductivité thermale des discontinues et la convection thermale de l’eau souterrin aussi bien que la contrainte thermale générée par les déchets nucléaires pour le plan et la construction du systèmes de dépôt, et ils devront tre obtenus depuis les mesures sur place. Für diesen Zwecke, die unterirdische Wegferfenfundgrube der Kernwüste wurde in der zwei und drei Dimensionen gesimuliert. Es beweist daß die Betonung wird zur thermisch Leitfähigkeit mangelnder Kontinuität und thermisch Konvektion des Grund-wasser sowie die thermisch Belastung ergezeugt durch die Kernwüste für den Entwurf und die Konstruktion des Fundgrubesystem gegeben werden, und sie müssen von den Feldmaße ergelangt werden .

This study evaluated spinal loads associated with lifting and hanging heavy mining cable in a variety of postures. This electrical cable can weigh up to 10 kg per metre and is often lifted in restricted spaces in underground coal mines. Seven male subjects performed eight cable lifting and hanging tasks, while trunk kinematic data and trunk muscle electromyograms (EMGs) were obtained. The eight tasks were combinations of four postures (standing, stooping kneeling on one knee, or kneeling on both knees) and two levels of cable load (0 N or 100 N load added to the existing cable weight). An EMG-assisted model was used to calculate forces and moments acting on the lumbar spine. A two-way split-plot ANOVA showed that increased load (p<0.05) and changes in lifting posture (p<0.05) independently affected trunk muscle recruitment and spinal loading. The increase in cable load resulted in higher EMG activity of all trunk muscles and increased axial and lateral bending moments on the spine (p < 0.05). Changes in posture caused more selective adjustments in muscle recruitment and affected the sagittal plane moment (p < 0.05). Despite the more selective nature of trunk EMG changes due to posture, the magnitude of changes in spinal loading was often quite dramatic. However, average compression values exceeded 3400 N for all cable lifting tasks.

Environmental constraints are pushing many operators to change from large rotary blastholes to the smaller diameter holes drilled with down-hole or top-hammer rigs. Productivity improvements over the years with these two drilling techniques has taken some of the bite out of the transition, while improved fragmentation and more uniform muck due to the tighter patterns can help offset increased explosives costs.

HE recent papers of Aust and Rutter112 have again brought to mind the importance of certain "special" orientation relationships between the lattices of two fcc crystals on the mobility of the grain boundary separating them. No theoretical treatment of this problem has been offered till now. The only principle published so far that has given an indication why certain orientation relationships should be "special" is the counting of "coincidence sites" according to the suggestions by Kronberg and Wilson.3 The "coincidence plots" published by these authors show, for instance, that two fcc lattices rotated by 38 deg around a common (111)-axis have 1/7 of their lattice sites in common. Such an orientation relationship is also characteristic for high boundary mobility. The accuracy of the orientation relationship needed for high mobility is not too rigid. Deviations up to 10 deg from the ideal orientation seem to be tolerable as can be gathered from the experimental data.&apos;j4 The auestion arises, then. how the density of coincidence sites will be affected by a deviatioi from mathematical accuracy. This can be checked by a simple model. Two sieves are prepared, the arrangement of the holes corresponding to lattice sites on a (111)-plane in a fcc crystal. They are placed upon each other, Fig. 1. One is kept fixed, the other is rotated around an axis pushed through one hole in common to both. The light falling through holes of both sieves is then a measure for the density of coincidence sites. If the diameter of the holes is very small, light intensity is contributed only by holes the centers of which coincide "exactly." The Bureau of Mines analyzed 626 crude oils from 546 oilfields in the United States that produced 2,500 BOPD or more during at least 1 of the last 3 years. Included also are crude oil analyses from eight fields that produced less but which were located in areas having few or no fields that produced 2,500 BOPD. The tables show the geographical and geological source, general characteristics. and determined and computed analytical data for each sample. The analyses were made according to the Bureau of Mines routine method and are directly comparable to other previously published analyses.

This paper on coarse particle recovery (CPR) summarizes a process to capture coarse particles that are not recoverable by regular flotation. Several porphyry copper operations in the world operate analogous circuits that recover non-floated copper from tailings; however, the case presented here is unique in that extensive underlying test work has allowed the authors to elucidate some fundamental principles behind recovery enhancement. This paper discusses an overview of the flowsheet that is proposed to Minera Escondida Ltda., the nature of copper in the feed to the CPR circuit, and the various unit operations within the recovery circuit.

The Port of Shekou is situated at Shenzhen Bay on the east side of the Pearl River estuary. Geological condition of the site is quite complicated. On top of the sea bed, there is a layer of soft silt 8 - 14 m thick. Under the soft silt, there are intercalated layers of sand, silt and clay. Average surface elevation of the underlying undulatory weathered bed rock is about - 20 m, with a variation of about 10 m. In certain locations, the weathered bed rock is covered with a layer of silt 3 - 4 m thick. This paper gives brief account of three types of wharf structures which are of particular interest, constructed in the last few years: (A) Platform type wharf structure with frontal sheet piling and steel raking pile in the rear; (B) Relieving Platform type structure with steel sheet piling and inclined anchoring HP pile ; (C) Steel pipe pile row supported apron added to a marginal quay. Average construction time of a deepwater berth is about six months.

"INTRODUCTION The idea of direct steel is by no means new. Although the work of Bessemer and Siemens provided simple and effective moans for converting pig iron into steel and established the ""blast-furnace route"" as the almost universal method of producing steel, metallurgists have not ceased to dream of direct steel. By direct steel is meant any process by which iron oxide in ore is reduced to Iron of the same or greater purity than the final steel or wrought iron. That is, carbon or alloying elements would be added as needed, not reduced in unwanted quantities into the iron and then removed more or completely by refining (Bessemer or open hearth) only to be readded in desired quantities.In general, direct-steel processes are ""sponge-iron"" processes, because reducing iron oxide without simultaneously alloying the iron with carbon, phcophorus, sulfur, and silicon present in ore and fuel succeeds only if the temperature is below the melting point of the iron. Such solid iron formed by reduction of iron oxide at relatively low temperature is sponge iron, which is butlery and porous. When the reduction proceeds at the higher temperature at which the particles of metal can weld together or finally even melt to yield pellets or balls that do not have the porosity and low-density characteristic of sponge iron, the product might preferably be called simply ""direct iron."""

The complexity of commercial mining software has gained rapidly over the past decade as hardware developments have surpassed software capabilities at a staggering rate. Software users, recognizing the limitations of off-the-shelf applications, have adapted embedded scripting languages. Custom programming has always had a vital role in mine computing innovations, yielding a dynamic research environment in industry and academia. Fields such as industrial minerals can benefit from customization of existing software, since the majority of mine planning software was designed for large metal mines. Different customization approaches utilizing embedded scripting languages are presented, with examples of sand and gravel applications in development. Following implementation by Surpac and development of the Surpac Command Language, Tcl has been widely applied. Mintec introduced Python, also extensible and portable amongst various operating systems, for use in their MineSight products. In early 2000, Gemcom introduced the use of Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications, widely used customization tools for a decade. Datamine implemented a flexible multi-language approach, with all program commands and processes available through the COM Server Interface. This extends customization from the existing macro language to scripting in HTML, JavaScript, or any language that supports COM.

"Nickel is an essential metal in stainless steel, armor plate, and nickel steels and also in nonferrous alleys, such as monel metal and cupre-nickel, which are used in marine service. Nickel is one of the metals that must be greatly restricted in civilian use to provide the amounts needed for our War program. Consequently, it is desirable to investigate every possible substitute.The 5-cent coin no z in use contains 2.3 percent nickel. At the end of 1941, about 450 tons of nickel was being consumed annually to produce these coins. If the nickel used for that purpose in 9141 had been diverted to military use, 15,000 tons of armor plate could have been produced. As nickel is vitally needed for military as well as essential civilian products, it would seem desirable to substitute some other alloy for the 25 percent nickel alloy now being used. The Bureau of Mines has been asked to suggest possible substitutes.The substitute should have physical properties similar to the alloy now being used. It should have a metallic appearance and ring and a reasonably white color, so to be distinguishable from the present 1-cent coin. It should also be reasonably resistant to corrosion."

Recent developments in circulating fluidized bed (CFB) once-through supercritical technology (OTSC) have enabled this technology to be offered as a utility-scale alternative competing head-to-head with pulverized fuel (PF) OTSC offerings. One clear example is the CFB supercritical unit at the Lagisza Power Plant in Poland, owned by PoludniowyKoncernEnergetyczny SA (PKE). This unit has now been in commercial operation for three full years, exhibiting very good performance, and has validated Foster Wheeler?s performance model at this utility scale as well as for units in the 600 MWe and 800 MWe size ranges offering net efficiency of ~43 per cent (LHV basis). This operating unit has also proven the use of the world?s first FW/BENSON? vertical-tube OTSC low mass flux technology. Since the Lagisza original international tender specified OTSC PF technology, it is important to note that the alternative selection of CFB OTSC technology over conventional PF technology is of historic significance, not only for the validation of the CFB supercritical platform as a viable alternative to conventional PF technology, but it also positions the CFB OTSC with fuel flexibility for offering of sizes up to and including 800 MWe units. This paper explores the differences between CFB OTSC technology and standard PF OTSC in utility power generation. Selection criteria, fuel burning range in both technologies, and other selection drivers are discussed. Economic analysis of both technologies, based on existing cases, is also provided. Also discussed are the technical advantages and uses of each technology. Foster Wheeler has recently been awarded a contract for four units of CFB OTSC technology, which utilizes a 2 on 1 configuration of two 550 MWe CFB OTSC boilers on two single 1000 MWe turbines. Essentially this provides a fuel-flexible low-emissions alternative to a 2 × 1000 MWe solid fuel power block.

"During installation of pile, a soil column is formed inside the pile. For small depths, the height of the soil column typically equals to the penetration depth (full coring state). As the penetration depth increases, the developed internal shear stresses become larger and reduce the amount of soil to penetrate. At the same time, the soil in pile at the bottom is compacted. This will continue until at a given moment, the soil column is a soil plug, and does not stop moving relative to the pile. This is because the shear stresses developed in the interior of the pile are greater than the load-bearing capacity of the ground.This paper presents the results obtained from 40 model pile tests carried out to assess the effect of soil plug on the model pile capacity. The piles are embedded in sand of different densities with different lengths of piles and types of pile-ends. The model tests are divided into two parts according to the type of end of the pipe pile used in the model pile test. The first part consists of 32 model open-ended piles with different lengths of soil plug inside the pile. The second part consists of 8 model closed-ended piles.It was concluded that open-ended pipe piles behave as a closed-ended if the soil plug formed inside piles in state partial plug or full plug. Length of soil plug depends on the type of installation and relative density. The pile load carrying capacity in dense sand is several times greater than those in medium sands especially in cases of closed ended piles or open-ended since the pipe pile can produce external and internal skin friction in addition to end bearing resistance that makes the total pile capacity close to that of closed-ended pile. Whether open-ended piles are driven or pressed in the fully coring - fully unplugged mode or in the partially plugged mode, the plug does contribute to static pile base capacity."
