In Chinese coal mines, extraction of deep, highly gassy soft coal seams sandwiched between soft floor and soft roof in complicated geology is commonly encountered. How to safely and efficiently excavate such seams is a very significant and important problem. It has been a focused research area in recent years. By combining the characteristics of fully mechanized longwall mining methods such as large cutting height and mining along the dip, an integrated method and technologies for the Zhangji Coal Mine were developed. This technology includes the design of a complicated geological exploration system, optimization of mining method and working face parameters, control of rock pressure and high levels of gas, reliability model of the production system, and selection and compatibility of equipment. Engineering practice shows that the integrated technology was successful in mining these complicated seams. This study not only enriches the mining method, but also improves the coal mining practice, especially ensuring both safety and productivity under complicated geological conditions.

The Salt Flat field, formerly called the Joe Bruner field, is located northeast of the town of Luling in Caldwell County, Tex. This field, which is a fault structure, approximately parallels and is about 5 miles east of the Old Luling field. The proved area is approximately 1,280 acres, on which 332 producing wells (September, 1930) have been drilled. The majority of the wells are producing from the Edwards limestone at an average total depth of 2,700 feet. A few wells are producing from the Austin chalk or from other formations above the Edwards limestone. The Wilcox formation is exposed, and the fault trace in places is scarcely evident. The strike of the structure is approximately N. 20 to 45° The displacement of the fault is probably 200 to 500 feet. The discovery well was completed in the Austin chalk by the Lutex Oil Co. during April, 1928. In October, 1926, the Sun Oil Co. completed the discovery well in the Edwards pay. This well was an important discovery, as it indicated the potential oil possibilities of the Edwards limestone in echelon fault structures. The discovery led to the development of the third fault field in the Edwards limestone and opened up a large area for future prospecting.

"Waste rock is one of the most abundant materials at mine sites and must be properly characterized and managed to limit acid rock drainage and other harmful byproducts. An experimental waste rock pile—part of the test piles research program—located at the Diavik diamond mine (Northwest Territories, Canada) was deconstructed and sampled to study the spatial variability of material properties. Bulk samples were classified based on the amount of material finer than 4.75 mm. Hydraulic properties of each sample were estimated and particle size distribution analysis was completed. The large volume of material and the large size of particles make it difficult to collect representative samples. Sampling techniques are often dis-ruptive to mining operations because they alter the structure of the waste rock pile or interfere with mine traffic. The convention at most mine sites to collect little to no information on waste rock material means that models and predictions of how waste material will behave and interact with the surrounding environment are based on general information that might not be site specific. This could lead to environmental damage or higher costs if environmental effects are underestimated during the construction of waste rock structures."

Current and potential dragline reclamation usage was evaluated for the U.S. coalfields based on data gathered and analyzed during field surveys, literature reviews and contacts with manufacturers. It was concluded that current wining plans have been adapted to federal and state strip mine and reclamation laws in ways which limit the potential for drag line reclamation systems at active mine sites. At abandoned conventional contour mine sites in steep-sloping areas such as central Appalachia, however, it was found that dragline reclamation systems have great potential application and may be the only practical solution to many reclamation problems. Alternative dragline systems were examined for restoring abandoned sites, and it was concluded that a tower excavator system offered superior characteristics and should be evaluated and developed under field conditions. A testing program was developed to provide a framework for the monitoring and analysis of cost, production and environmental data during a field demonstration of a tower excavator system.

Past attempts to establish an integrated steel industry on the West Coast of Canada have been unsuccessful for at least three reasons: (a) insufficient reserves of a suit-able iron ore supply; (b) a relatively small local market for iron and steel; and (c) the non-availability of an economical process to produce primary iron on a small scale. Today, the reserves of economically mineable ore deposits are ample to support a steel production of 100,000 to 200,-000 tons per annum. The local market has increased so as to be able to absorb most of this capacity. With-in the next few years, a small integrated steel plant, including the "H-Iron" direct iron ore reduction process for electric furnace charge stock production, will be able to show a profitable operation. Reynolds Metals Company announced plans to increase its rate of production of primary aluminum by 17 thousand tons per year by the end of February. Other producers were expected to increase operating rates during the first quarter of 1976 (see table 10 pg. 29). CHROMIUM -Under the Trade Act of 1974, a petition was filed July 16, 1975, with the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) by the Tool and Stainless Steel Industry Committee for Import Relief and the United Steelworkers of America, AFL-CIO, for import relief for certain stainless and alloy tool steel products. The Commission determined on January 16, 1976, in a report to the President, that increased quantities of imports of stainless steel sheet and strip, plate, bar, and rod and alloy tool steel except ingots, blooms, billets, slabs, and sheet bars were a substantial cause of serious injury or threat thereof. The Commission recommended import quotas for the period 1976 through 1980. The President has 2 months in which to act, with his decision subject to a Congressional override.

The difficulties associated with wet-processing fine size coal led the Bureau of Mines to investigate a dry process for removing pyrite from coal pulverized to powerplant fineness. The dry process that was investigated consists of two cleaning steps: First, centrifugal separation is used to remove a fine, pyrite-depleted portion as a product; second, the remaining coarser, pyrite-enriched portion is taken to electrostatic separation in which pyrite is concentrated and rejected. Ball milling and Hardgrove milling were used to pulverize the coal. Three coals from the Pittsburgh seam were treated by the dry-removal process. Over 55 pct of the pyrite, which amounted to 70 pct of the available pyrite, was removed in a reject of 10 to 20 pct from one of the coals. Similar treatment of the other two coals removed about 35 to 50 pct of the pyritic sulfur, which amounted to about 70 pct of the available pyritie, sulfur from these coals. Both centrifugal and electrostatic separations were more efficient when pyrite particles were as large as possible. Separation efficiency was improved by confining the particle size of the feed to a relatively narrow range and by avoiding excessive amounts (more than 10 pct) of dust in the electrostatic range. The removal efficiency was increased with the use of stage grinding.

Intergrated energy balances and energy flows were constructed and quantified for State, regional, and national levels from four separate supply and demand commodity balances for coal, dry natural gas, petroleum and natural gas liquids, and utility electricity. These commodity balances were integrated by source and sectors through conversion and aggregation of their components to energy equivalents expressed in British thermal units (Btu). A summarization of the total gross energy components of supply and demand for commercial energy derived from direct fuels, hydropower and nuclear power, based on individual States and regions, is tabulated for 1960 and 1965. Pertinent computerization details and more than 500 individual State and regional printout tables, in both original commodity units and Btu's, are shown. Using these data, energy flows between States and regions were calculated to identify surplus and deficit energy areas. Report emphasis is on the conceptual aspects of integrated energy balances, rather than on the development of missing State energy data.

This Bureau of Mines publication identifies areas having sufficient coal reserves to support synthetic natural gas (SNG) development and summarizes those areas having the highest potential. Capital requirements, mining and coal cost factors, water availability, and coal-quality data pertinent to SNG production are presented. Evaluation of individual coal reserve blocks was based upon coal and water requirements of the Bureau of Mines Synthane coal gasification process.

If a conductor traversed by an electric current is broken, a conduction forms in the air between the two broken ends of the wire. This conduction manifests itself in an initial phase by an electric spark and, in a second phase, by an arc if the the circuit continues to supply sufficient power. This arc goes out when the distance between the two ends of the conductor becomes sufficiently large. If the break occurs in an explosive atmosphere, the energy contributed by the arc can cause an explosion. To avoid such accidents, electric circuits that may be utilized in hazardous atmospheres can be made "intrinsically safe". The investigation which we conducted is part of a research project on the intrinsic safety of arcs of high intensity but short duration, in the case of resistive circuits. We developed an electronic system which makes it possible to limit the duration of an arc at the level of the break of a conductor traversed by a current with a possible maximum intensity of 80 amperes. This experimental device for monitoring and measuring the parameters of the arc has shown that arcs of high intensity but with a duration limited to a few microseconds do not ignite an explosive methane-air mixture.

"Résumé - Cette étude porte sur l'altération de la matière organique et des argiles dans les boues carbonatés dévoniennes du faciès ""F"" de la Formation de Pine Point et ses équivalents stratigraphiques la Formation d'Evie et l'unité bitumineuse de la base de la Formation de Horn River. La matière organique se compose principalement de bitume solide et de quelques fragments de fossiles (organo­ clastes). La majorité des échantillons ne renferment que de l'illite et des interstratifiées illite/smectite.Si on compare les températures d'homogénéïsation (Th = l00°C) des inclusions fluides de la sphalérite et des dolomites associées à la minéralisation aux températures estimées à partir de la réflec­ tance de la collinite (84°C à ll7°C), l'on ne peut pas conclure à la présence d'une anomalie ther­ mique dans le district minier de Pine Point. De plus, la réflectance des organoclastes n'est pas plus élevée dans le district minier de Pine Point que dans les localités plus éloignées des gîtes. L'analyse des minéraux argileux conduit à la même conclusion : aucune anomalie thermique n'est décelable dans les unités échantillonnées à l'intérieur du district minier de Pine Point quelque soit l'indicateur utilisé.La kaolinite et la matière organique altérée, affichant des valeurs anomales de sa réflectance, se trouve essentiellement en présence de soufre et de sulfures. Cela suggère une origine authigène de la kaolinite et une altération de la matière organique reliées au phénomènes de minéralisation.Abstract- The alteration of organic matter and clays is studied in the Devonian Pine Point Formation carbonate muds, ""F"" facies, and its lateral equivalents the Evie Formation and the biturninous unit at the base of the Horn River Formation. The organic matter is mainly composed of solid bitumen with few fossil fragments (organoclasts). Most samples contain only illite and mixed layer illite/smectite.If we compare the Th(l00°C) from fluid inclusions of sphalerite and dolomites associated with mineralization to the temperatures calculated from the reflectanœ (Ro) of the collinite (84°C to 117°C), we cannot detect a thermal anomaly in the Pine Point mining district. This result is based on the reflectance values of organoclasts from the mining district that are not higher than those reflectance values measured on organic matter (OM) away from the ore deposit. A similar conclusion is reached from the clay study: none of the parameters used allow us to identify a thermal anomaly in the samples from the mining district.The kaolinite and the altered OM showing anomalous Ro values mainly occur with sulfides and sulfur. This association suggests an authigenic origin for the kaolinite and an alteration of the OM due to the mineralization events."

"INTRODUCTION For the last several years the oil industry has been turning more and more toward conservation arid the study of related production problems. It is generally conceded that ultimate recovery is increased by holding the natural gas in thy sand which is net needed in lifting the oil. The retained gas lowers the viscosity and surface tension of the oil and helps flow the oil from the sand. Lewis states that ""while the operator can not control the original conditions of energy and resistance in the sand, he can partly control the efficiency of expulsion. As it is the energy contained in the compressed and absorbed gas rather than the oil that is exhausted, it is but logical to judge the efficiency of a producing method largely by the relative quantities of gas produced with each barrel of oil. If by a change in method the producer lessons the proportion of gas with each barrel of oil, he should increase the total recovery- of oil correspondingly, even if the rate of production is temporarily reduced somewhat.""The effect of ""pinching in"" or controlling the flow of oil wells in an effort to lessen the proportion of has never been definitely known. The general belief has been that ""pinching"" a flowing well causes the oil and gas volumes to be reduced proportionately, maintaining the same gas-oil ratio as before the reduction in flow was made. Non-ferrous slags are granulated and stockpiled as an alternative to pit cooling or transporting molten slag to a dump. The chemical composition of such slag is determined by the pyrometallurgical process in which it is produced, while the size distribution is set by safety concerns or a desire to reduce wear of pumps, pipelines and other equipment. Relatively few operations give consideration to the effect of granulation conditions on other properties of the granulate as the material is typically accumulated on the smelter site. It is becoming recognized that slag has many potential commercial uses and carries much of the energy applied to the smelting operation. This paper outlines the findings of extensive work to identify uses for granulated non-ferrous slag, the importance of preparation conditions on the properties, impediments to more extensive use of granulated slag, the real costs of slag stockpiling and the opportunities for further productive research.

EDWARD COOPER, was born in New York City, October 26, 1824. His father, Peter Cooper, to say nothing of manifold reasons for fame as an inventor and philanthropist, deserves to be remembered as a pioneer in the establishment of public schools; and it is not surprising that he sent his son to one of the democratic institutions in which he was himself so ardently interested. From the public school Edward Cooper went to Columbia. College, where he made the acquaintance of Abram S. Hewitt, who was first his tutor, afterwards his traveling companion, brother-in-law, business partner and life-long friend.* For twenty years I was the consulting engineer of the firm of Cooper & Hewitt, and also connected with the work of the Cooper Union, in which they were both deeply interested and faithfully active. On the basis of the intimate knowledge thus gained, I venture an estimate of Edward Cooper's character and career which, if not fully comprehensive, may facilitate a juster estimate than would be reached by the strident of those data which the modesty of the man permitted to be placed upon public record. Edward Cooper's mind was one of the most active, accurate and subtle with which I have ever come into contact: He had inherited from his father a sunny, benevolent temperament, and' the irresistible impulse to attack all new problems which challenged his attention. His thorough education had 'indeed made him wiser than his father, both in philanthropy and in technical inventions. He could condemn and reject a proposition which Peter Cooper would have embraced, in a splendid, though ignorant, faith that nothing was impossible to an. The annual mine planning process is one of the most important tactical/operational steps towards achieving strategic goals. These tactical plans are part of a very comprehensive Mineral Resource Management process, with the natural sequel to planning being execution. The execution of an underground hard rock mine plan is a multi-project environment that comprises many development-construction-equipping-stoping single project paths, which are referred to as ?stoping paths?. The uncertainty that typifies execution of projects comes in the form of untimely disruptions to constituent tasks and/or project paths. Annual mining plans also include quantified objectives for occupational health and safety, production, quality, cost, employee morale, environment, and corporate social investment. Such objectives make for a highly complex environment that management must contend with?complex in the sense that all the paths and objectives have interdependent constraints. Furthermore, at the time of this paper, Sections54*and 55**of the MHSA*** put the onus on management to ensure legislative adherence. It stands to reason that planning estimates allow excess capacity?buffers?that cushions the impact of untimely disruptions. This paper concerns the fact that despite all the buffers allowed for, time, scope, and budget creeps impact on mine planning and threaten its successful execution. As a consequence, the paper deals with buffer management, the essence of Critical Chain Project Management (CCPM). Effective buffer management provided strategic (executive level) updates without losing the tactical/operational detail necessary for job card creation, especially where professional skills and experience are in short supply. Indicative bottom-line results showed CCPM to be highly effective.

"Instead of using the traditional batch casting process, the CRIMSON [1] (Constrained Rapid Induction Melting Single Shot Up-Casting) method employs a high-powered furnace to melt just enough metal to fill a single mould in a closed crucible. The crucible is transferred to a station for computer-controlled counter gravity filling of the mould for optimum filling and solidification. The CRIMSON method therefore holds the liquid aluminium for a minimum of time drastically reducing the energy losses attributed to holding the metal at temperature. With the rapid melting times achieved, of the order of minutes, there isn’t a long time at temperature for hydrogen to be absorbed or for thick layers of oxide to form. The metal is never allowed to fall under gravity and therefore any oxide formed is not entrained within the liquid. Thus higher quality castings are produced leading to a reduction in scrap rate and reduced overall energy losses.IntroductionEngineers at the University of Birmingham, England, with local company, NTec, have invented a new casting process that will reduce the energy costs of light-metal foundries. The technology, entitled CRIMSON, means that foundries need only heat the quantity of metal required to fill a single mould rather than large batches that use unnecessary energy and create waste. The complete concept of CRIMSON requires a change of philosophy in the approach to casting and requires the user to think holistically in order to reap the full benefits from the process. This paper will discuss the various aspects of energy wastage within the foundry sector and discusses the processes whereby the energy can be reduced. Primarily the author focuses on the aluminium sector but CRIMSON can be applied to many of the non-ferrous “light” alloys. Ferrous materials and non-ferrous “heavy” alloys can also benefit from some of the ideas but not necessarily directly from the application of CRIMSON."

This report 3/gives the results of a reconnaissance of the mining districts in Lander County, Nev., made from March 29 to April 20 and from May 9 to May 21, 1938, during which virtually all of the mining districts n the county were visited. No attempt has been made to include in this report all the mines and prospects in the various mining districts, and it should be stated that whether or not a property is mentioned herein has no. bearing on its merits. The report rovers the situation of the various districts, types of ore deposits, ownership and description of mines and prospects, information on past and current activity, and other information of economic interest likely to be useful to those interested in the development of our mineral resources. The names of the various districts mentioned are those generally used when they were organized for purposes of record and regulation. When originally organized, the districts embraced large areas with no well-defined boundaries, so that the names have little geographical significance.

This paper describes a physical modelling program that recreated block cave propagation in a geotechnical centrifuge. A brief description of the design of the test along with the sample material and monitoring equipment is given. The samples tested showed caving behaviour and fragmentation distributions that one would expect from caving mines, with one cave deviating due to pre-existing major discontinuities in the sample. A series of fractures formed ahead of and parallel to the cave, implying that an extensional failure mechanism may play a larger role in cave development than previously thought. The results of acoustic emission monitoring of the tests show a seismogenic zone advancing ahead of the cave; however, the quantity and quality of the data is too limited to draw any further conclusions.CITATION:Cumming-Potvin, D, Wesseloo, J, Jacobsz, S W and Kearsley, E, 2016. THE BUREAU OF MINES was established in the public interest to conduct inquiries and scientific and technologic investigations concerning mining and the preparation, treatment, and utilization of mineral substances; to promote health and safety in the mineral industries; to conserve mineral resources and prevent their waste; to further economic development; to increase efficiency in the mining, metallurgical, quarrying, and other mineral industries; and to inquire into the economic conditions affecting these industries. The organic act of the Bureau, as amended by Congress and approved February 25, 1913, made it the province and duty of the Bureau to "disseminate information concerning these subjects 'in such manner as will best carry out the purposes of this Act.'" In accordance with that directive, the Bureau reports the findings of its research and investigations in its own series of publications and also in articles that appear in scientific, technical, and trade journals; in proceedings of conventions and seminars; in reference books; and in other non-Bureau sources. The number of these reports, the wide range of subjects they cover, and the variety of mediums in which they appear make the kind of list and index presented in this special publication both necessary and valuable. This issue describes Bureau reports and articles published during the period January 1, 1960 to December 31, 1964. It, supplements the 50-year list of Bureau publications issued from July 1, 1910, to January 1, 1960,2 and the 50-year list of articles by Bureau authors published outside the Bureau from July 1, 1910, to January 1, 1960.3 It supersedes the annual lists of Bureau publications and articles from January 1 to December 31, 1960,4 from January 1 to December 31, 1961,5 from January 1 to December 31, 1962,6 and from January 1 to December 31, 1963.7 The leading general and technical libraries of the United States maintain files of the Bureau's publications. A list of these libraries appears immediately following this introduction.
