TO THE AMERICAN MINING CONGRESS. AMERICAN INSTITUTE OE MINING ENGINEERS. MINING AND METALLURGICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA. The committee that makes this report was appointed at the meeting of the American Mining Congress, at Denver, Colo., in. November, 1906. The appointment had in view the drafting. of a law for the regulation of quarrying and metalliferous mining under the police laws of the States, with the hope that the uniform adoption of such a law could tend to reduce the number of accidents in mining. Since its. appointment, the committee has had' under serious and continuous consideration the matter with which it was charged. At the meetings 0f the American Mining Congress in 19o7, 1908 and 1909, it reported progress. At the meeting in 1909 it was authorized to present its report not only to the American Mining Congress, but also to the American Institute of Mining Engineers and the. Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, and to present its report in printed form during the interim between meetings of the American Mining Congress. The committee collected from the officials of the States of the Union copies of their mining laws. With the assistance of the Engineering and Mining Journal copies of the laws 0f Great Britain, the Transvaal, New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia, Tasmania, New aland, and certain European countries were also obtained. These laws were subjected to careful study. The first publication of the committee was a summary of the more important metalliferous mining laws 0f this country. Upon the basis of the existing laws of the States of the Union, Great Britain, and the English speaking colonies, a tentative draft. was prepared and printed in limited number in 1909, for convenience in securing the advice and criticism of a considerable number 0f persons engaged in the mining industry. In this way valuable suggestions were received. At the request of the chairman of this committee, Mr. Frederick L. Hoffman, statistician of the Prudential Insurance Company, of Newark, N. J., summarized and reviewed the available statistics of fatalities in metalliferous mining in the United States. Mr. Hoffman's report was published in the Engineering and Mining

In general, the metallurgical industry has so far been slower than the chemical industry to adopt ion exchange materials for industrial processes. The atomic energy industry presents a marked exception to this general situation, and the literature shows a rapidly increasing use of ion exchange techniques for the recovery of atomic energy metals on scales ranging from the ultra micro up to that of the largest mining operations. In many cases, the processes used would be equally applicable to more common metals and it is hoped that this review will be of interest to metallurgists outside the specialised atomic energy field. The review is intended to describe developments of ion exchange processes made during the last three years. Earlier studies have been summarised by Kunin and Preuss (1956) and Roland (1957). In order to restrict the number of references discussed, purely analytical procedures have been omitted and only those processes which have been conducted on a reasonably large scale or which, from their nature, areclearly capable of being upscaled, have been considered. The toughness and fracture mechanisms of ores with significantly different microstructures from Yandi, Koolan and Mount Whaleback were studied with a view to understanding their degradation behaviour. The Canadian Rare Earth Elements Network (CREEN) was formally launched at the Rare Earth Symposium at The Metallurgy and Materials Society of CIM (MetSoc) Conference of Metallurgists in October 2013. CREEN is an industry-led, multi-stakeholder network focused on providing collaborative solutions that will advance Canada’s REE sector to produce a significant proportion of the global production of separated critical rare earth products by 2018. The Network is industry driven by companies with REE projects under development and supported by universities, engineering firms, national and commercial laboratories, and government. CREEN aims to accelerate the development and delivery of timely solutions to technical and economic issues specifically facing Canada’s emerging rare earth sector. It will facilitate partnerships with other national and international organizations to leverage existing research initiatives. It will also support training and education to ensure that the needed qualified human resources are available to achieve the sector’s goals. CREEN membership spans the full rare earth supply chain and technical support organizations, from prospective producers, advanced project developers, national and commercial laboratories, engineering consultants, university researchers, and other innovators. The iron ore deposits of the Port Hedland district of North Western Australia are associated with band'ed sedimentary iron formations that form part of the local succession of folded and faulted Archaean volcanic and sedimentary rocks. The iron formations are regarded as the protore beds or sources of the iron which became concentrated by supergene processes to form commercial grade iron ore deposits.Iron oxide deposits occurring in situ within the protore beds are considered to be of residual-replacement origin, due to supergene leaching of gangue minerals and' deposition of secondary iron oxides in their place, Two types of deposit have been recognized. Lode deposits are deep lenses of massive hematite located adjacent to major faults. These deposits are thought to be very old and to have originated by supergene processes during the long period of erosion represented by the major unconformity between the Archaean rocks and the overlying Proterozoic beds. The other type, known as crust ore deposits, are shallow cappings of hematite and goethite on hills formed by the outcrops of steeply dipping protore beds. These deposits could have originated as far back as the early Mesozoic and it is possible that the ore-forming process is continuing at a slow rate at the present day.Deposits formed by erosion and re-deposition of material derived from pre-existing residual-type deposits are known as derived deposits. These include conglomerates and scree accumulations of various types and ages and pisolitic deposits formed by supergene leaching of transported detritus. Derived deposits range in age from early Proterozoic to Recent. "This paper summarizes research into the study of the control of flotation processes based on froth images. The use of numerical image analysis techniques for the extraction of significant patterns (froth structure and colour) from industrial flotation froths is discussed.First, the froth was analysed by the use of the Multivariate Image Analysis (MIA) method to extract the spectral variation contained in a RBG image. The Partial Least Squares (PLS) was applied to develop the empirical model for the prediction of froth grade. The results of this application are illustrated using one industrial case study.Second, the froth was also analysed by Gray Level Co-occurrence Matrix (GLCM) and Wavelet Transform Analysis (WTA) to extract features related more to morphological aspects. Since there is useful information hidden in froth texture, these methods are used as texture descriptor to classify different types of froths.Third, a control strategy based on a froth structure indicator was developed and implemented on an industrial zinc flotation circuit. The feedback controller uses a reagent flow-rate in order to maintain the froth structure at its set point. Process improvements obtained with the implemented control strategy are highlighted.Finally, the feasibility to implement a hybrid control strategy consisting in a froth structure supervision controller based on the froth concentrate grade estimated by MIA and recovery inferred by image analysis is discussed.INTRODUCTIONThe development of control strategies to achieve satisfactory control performance has always been a great challenge for engineers and the need for improved process diagnosis, control and optimization has become more and more evident for the mineral processing industry in the last decades. That is why new process variables need to be measured particularly in highly multivariable processes such as flotation. This industrial process is subject to a wide variety of disturbances mainly generated by frequent and sometimes abrupt changes in physical and/or chemical ore characteristics and also, due to some irregularities in manual process operating procedures. A flotation circuit scheme is always a complex network of more than two dozens slurry streams. Information about those streams (% solid, metal content analysis and flow rates) is important for process diagnosis performance evaluation and control. Operations of the new copper smelter at Mount Isa commenced on the 6th February, 1953. Prior to this date a paper by R. V. Anderson (1953) outlined the smelter layout, proposed operation and expected performance.Nominally a 50-ton per day plant, output is currently at the rate of 85 long tons per day. In the first 3t years, of operation to 30th June, 1956, '71,339 tons of blister copper were produced. Operation has been stabilized' and a number of modifications to plant and operation have been made. This paper reviews the progress made to date.GENERAL LAYOUT AND EQUIPMENTThe general layout and equipment follows well-established practice as study of Figs. 1 to 4, and Appendix II will show. This diagrammatic representation of layout (Fig. 1) and flow sheet (Fig. 2) is intended for the purpose of brevity to take the place of a detailed plant description.Choice of site for the smelter was limited by the necessity for close proximity of the waste heat boilers to the powerhouse.Much excavation was necessary before foundation work commenced, but the plant is compact and further expansion is possible.CHARGE MAKE-UPRoaster charge initially comprised concentrates, purchased ores, revert materials, mine sulphide ore and barren sand. As purchased ore receipts increased and as domestic black rock oxidized ore became available, the latter two fluxes were eliminated from the charge. Fluxes at minus i-in. sizing are trucked from crushing plant or stockpile by motor lorries. Filtered mill concentrates are dropped from an overhead conveyor on to the storage patio floor adj acent to the two concentrate bins.

Except for uranium search, conventional oil well logging techniques are relatively little-used in mining exploration. The main reasons for this are cost and an apparent lack of awareness of the potential use of the methods in the search for ore. However, relatively inexpensive portable units are currently available for performing the simpler electrical and radiometric logs in diamond drill holes.The emphasis in oil exploration logging programmes is largely on the estimation of porosity. In most mineral work, however, porosity is not very significant, and factors such as mineral conductivity and radioactivity assume an important role.The Bureau of Mineral Resources (BMR) during a programme to explore for uranium and associated base metals in the area east of Rum Jungle, N.T., carried out electrical and radiometric logging of diamond drill holes as a routine part of their investigations. Case histories are described in which the logs were used to aid in defining stratigraphic sequences and transgressive structures in base-metal prospects. Some surface geophysicalanomalies were explained by the logging: induced polarization and electromagnetic anomalies were related to black slate; and self-potential anomalies were related to oxidation of pyrite black slate, or apparent electrokineticeffects in the black slate. The logs provided an objective appraisal of the rock units penetrated and thereby helped to differentiate lithologies.Borehole logging, including newer techniques such as downhole analysis, could be done in geological and geophysical investigations in other areas for a relatively small cost with a considerable potential gain of information.

A current trend amongst producers is the increase in dewatering of iron ore fines (<0.5 mm), due to an increase in wet beneficiation processes used to upgrade lower quality ore deposits, increased water content in orebodies located below the water table, and increasing focus on transportable moisture limits (TML). Vacuum filtration is commonly used for dewatering of iron ore fines, and as with all filtration processes performance decreases with particle size. Significant improvements are possible with the use of filter aids, usually anionic surfactants and flocculants. Anionic surfactants reduce the surface tension of the associated water, which is then removed more readily leading to improved filtercake moistures. Anionic flocculants used correctly can improve cake permeability, in turn, decreasing cake formation times and increasing filtration rates. In addition to increased throughput, savings and benefits for producers can include: moisture limit penalties, improved handleability, along with energy and water savings.The effect of filter aids on two iron ore fines samples from the Pilbara region were evaluated using a lab scale vacuum filtration unit. The first sample showed a reduction in the filtercake moisture content by 2.3 per cent weight/weight (w/w) with the use of BASF’s Drimax® 1234. For the second sample a reduction in the filtercake moisture of 3.4 per cent w/w along with an increase in filtration rate of 20 per cent was achieved by using a combination of Magnafloc® 5250 and Drimax® 1239 NF, as both filter throughput and cake moisture were considered important by site.CITATION:Haskell, T, Dickie, S and Joe, Y, 2017. Mining at Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting's Snow Lake Division is now in the mature stage of the mines' lives. These base metal copper-zinc mines have been operating for more than 30 years. Stopes had small pillars called "crown pillars" left between them. These pillars range up to 100 m (330 ft) long by 40 m (130 ft) wide and 15 m (50 ft) thick. Hudson Bay have been successful in removing these pillars by using cable slings, electric scoops, longhole mining and diesel load-haul-dump equipment. The different shapes and sizes of these pillars has required that many innovative techniques be tried in order to find acceptable economic mining methods. An overview of the different methods will be outlined. Background Hudson Bay Mining & Smelting's Snow Lake Division is located in Manitoba some 800 km (500 miles) north of Winnipeg and 200 km (125 miles) by road from the Hudson Bay smelter complex located in Flin Flon, Manitoba (Fig. I). There are currently three producing underground mines and one open pit operating at the Snow Lake Division, producing copper and zinc concentrates. Pillar recovery is intensive and vital to continued production of these mature mines. The crown pillars are producing more than 50% of the current mine production. This figure will increase in the future. The two mines at which crown pillar recovery is taking place and that will be discussed are the 400 t/d (440 stpd) Rod Mine and the 1000 t/d (1100 stpd) Stall Lake Mine, both five-day-a-week producers. Crown pillar mining has been applied for some time at these mines. However, it was only recently that the crown pillars became vital to production. This has necessitated a number of innovative techniques to recover them.

El presente trabajo describe el proceso de gestión de calidad en la administración de los derechos mineros a través de la automatización de procesos desarrollados por el Instituto Nacional de Concesiones y Catastro Minero (INACC) organismo público descentralizado del Sector Energía y Minas que administra el Procedimiento Ordinario Minero para el otorgamiento de Concesiones Mineras, el Catastro Minero Nacional y la distribución del Derecho de Vigencia a escala nacional. Entre otras funciones de dicha institución está la creación de una serie de base de datos numérica, que le han permitido optimizar dichos procesos en calidad. Así como en el aspecto de la administración del Derecho de Vigencia y Penalidad, se creó el software para automatizar sus procesos y efectuar el cobro respectivo en las entidades del sistema financiero nacionall. Finalmente en el aspecto catastral, se generalizó el uso de coordenadas UTM (PSAD56) para identificar los derechos mineros, asimismo, se crearon los parámetros de transformación de coordenadas WGS84 a UTM.

A geotechnical study was conducted to identify the cause(s) of stope instability at the Ashanti Mine (Obuasi, Ghana). As part of the investigation, laboratory testing of rock was performed and the rock mass was classified according to the Q-System (Barton et al., 1974).Numerical analyses were performed using the computer program FLAC (Itasca, 2001). The observed failure zone around the stopes was simulated using both Mohr-Coulomb and Hoek-Brown (Sheorey,1997) models. Yielding along peripheral graphite bands and tensile failure were clearly identified to be the major contributors to stope instability.

Longwall mining has existed in Utah for more than half a century. Much of this mining occurred at depths of cover that significantly exceed those encountered by most other U.S. longwall operations. Deep cover causes high ground stress, which can combine with geology to create a coal burst hazard. Nearly every longwall mine operating within the Utah’s Book Cliffs coalfield has been affected by coal bursts.

"A colorimetric technique, originally developed for methyl iso butyl carbinol (MIBC) based on the Komarowsky reaction, has been extended to a wide range of common mineral flotation frothers. The procedure, which is briefly described, is shown suited to on-site determination in a series of industrial campaigns. Some frother observations are described, including: concentration evolution down a bank, distribution between pulp and froth phases, and a mass balance around a circuit. Minute amounts of frother in recycle water were also measured.The contribution of frother and alcohol by-products in the analysis was generally additive for plants using aliphatic alcohol type frothers and decoupled for systems using glycols. Typically, U250C (polyglycol) was used at higher concentration (>10 ppm) than MIBC (aliphatic alcohol) (<10 ppm) or F-150 (polyglycol) (<3ppm).The ability to monitor frother easily will help interpret gas dispersion behaviour and should permit further optimization of flotation cell hydrodynamics and chemistry. The capability to directly measure should help optimize the type, amount and location of frother addition, and to assess frother recycled with reclaim process water.INTRODUCTIONOwing to the lack of analytical methods, the task of determining frother concentration in plant flotation circuits is not routinely performed. Industrial sites seldom outsource analyses that are both costly and inconvenient, due to the necessity of shipping freeze-dried samples to remote testing facilities. A more direct colorimetric method has recently been demonstrated for the laboratory characterization of common industrial frothers (Gélinas and Finch, 2004). The approach, based on the Komarowsky reaction (Penniman et al., 1936; Coles et al., 1942; Duke, 1947), was previously described by Parkhomovski et al. (1976) for methyl iso butyl carbinol (MIBC). The reaction involves the interaction of the OH group of a higher alcohol, concentrated sulphuric acid, and salicylaldehyde, to yield coloured solutions with intensities that can be analyzed by UV-visible spectrophotometry."

Equipment-washing facilities at Freeport-McMo-Ran?s Sierrita Mine in Arizona produce a mixture of oil and water that was difficult to dispose of easily or cheaply. However, after some changes in the facility, waste oil is now used as part of the mining process. Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc., head-quartered in Phoenix, AZ, operates copper, gold and molybdenum mines. It is the world?s largest producer of molybdenum. Heavy equipment used at the mine is hosed off periodically in the wash bay. The dirty water and oil mixture drains into the sump next to the bay. Oil was manually collected for disposal. This was a tedious and dirty process Mine managers sought a more efficient method of removing the oil. Instead of spending the time and effort skimming the tank with vacuums or sorbents, they enlisted the help of Abanaki Corp., manufacturer of the Model 4 Oil Grabber. Engineers designed the sump to utilize prevailing winds to blow the oil to one corner. This was the ideal place for the Abanaki skimmer. The skimmer removes the oil and discharges it into a plastic storage container. ?This reduces the time needed to keep the area clean, and the staff can focus on cleaning the equipment rather than worrying about the oil,? according to Jay Salerno, construction manager at the Sierrita Mine. Salerno is considering adding an optional oil concentrator to the skimmer to make the process even more efficient. The concentrator would remove any water picked up by the belt and return it to the sump, leaving nearly pure oil for disposal. Because the mine is located in the Sonoran desert, most of the water evaporates in the hot, dry air and is not reused.

Industry 4.0 offers new possibilities to combine increased productivity with stimulating workplaces in a good work environment. Used correctly, digitalization can create attractive jobs in safe control room environments, which provide space for the employee’s full expertise and creativity. This is true also for the mining industry. But, to succeed, it is important to analyze the development from a worker’s perspective. What will happen to their work? What skills will be needed in the mine of tomorrow? We must also consider the risks, such as privacy issues, increased stress, and work-life boundaries. These questions must be understood if we are to create workplaces that can attract a young and diverse workforce to tomorrow’s mining industry. In this article, we try to illustrate what the new technology can mean for the individual miners. We formulate the notion of Mining 4.0 (Industry 4.0 in the mining industry), where we try to create an image of how the future might look from a miner’s perspective and how mining companies may navigate their way to a future that works for all miners. To illustrate the range of possible outcomes, we formulate two scenarios: one utopian and one dystopic. At the end of our article, we bring forward six recommendations that can be considered a beginning of a road map for the human side of Mining 4.0.
