The Montana Tunnels Mine was mined out to a depth of 900 feet at the end of 1999. The first signs of instability were recognized in 1996 along the upper slope area of the northwest sector when the pit was mined out to a depth of approximately 500 feet. To extend the life of mining operations, it has been proposed to extend and steepen the northwest highwall to a depth of 1000 feet. Slope stability analyses were carried out using the UDEC software program to assess the stability and deformation of the proposed highwall design. Back analysis of an instability in 1997 along the upper slope section and highwall deformation to date has indicated reasonable agreement with the observed mode of failure and displacement monitoring results. The results of detailed analyses of the proposed highwall design have indicated very limited additional deformation, further development of tension cracks is unlikely and large-scale instability is not expected to occur. A total of 40% of additional mining has been completed and ongoing displacement monitoring to date has confirmed very limited additional movement and no further tension crack development.

Groundwater control is generally an important consideration and significant source of risk during most tunneling projects. Proper baselining of groundwater conditions requires: 1) a thorough understanding of the geological environment; 2) a focused site investigation; 3) identification of construction and adjacent property damage risks associated with inflows and short and long term piezometric level changes; and 4) consideration of contractual issues including restrictions on means and methods and pay items for associated work. This paper provides an overview of groundwater baselining issues and risks based on selected design studies and construction case histories.

A recent analysis of 145 TBM tunnels of more than 1000km total length has helped to quantify the time dependence of utilization (U). In fact U = Tm, where T is time in hours and m is a negative gradient of deceleration. In poor quality ground, gradient m has a strong dependence on rock mass quality Q, for example m ˜ -0.5when Q = 0.1. Good investigation is critical for ensuring faster TBM tunneling then drill-and-blasting, which tends not to slow down (in m/hr) as the tunnel length increases. Anew design model called QTBM allows more reliable prognoses be made, and occasionally will disqualify the TBM solution.

Adaptations and redesign of the existing already very successful and proven road milling machine concept and technical innovations such as an optimized, specifically for mining application developed cutting drum, cutting housing design and cutting tools, high manoeuvrability achieved via a tight turning radius, a three disk clutch system and a cutting drum drive that allows for the acceptance of higher loads, a complete reinforcement of the chassis to withstand higher vibrations and torque, the installation of increased engine power via a modern drive unit, a specifically for mining/construction applications developed operator’s platform and finally a redesigned air intake system and the adaptation of the levelling system resulted in far more cost effective and advantageous capabilities of Wirtgen Surface Miner in soft to medium hard mining and construction applications. As the achieved results show for the first time in modern surface mining history mechanized cutting is capable to compete successfully against traditional drill, blast/ripping and other conventional mining methods.

For many tunneling, deep shaft and deep excavation projects ground freezing is one of the best if not the only technique available to create a watertight and load bearing temporary support system in soft ground conditions. When appropriate attention is given to the details of the ground freezing system design, ground freezing is a very safe method and is economically viable with competing techniques and combinations of techniques. Recent innovative uses of the technique in Europe are highlighted in this paper and compared with current uses in North America.

The use of a single tunnel boring machine (TBM) tunnel of approximately 12 to 13 m (40 ft to 43 ft) diameter for transit systems to house both light rail or subway tracks in a stacked configuration is an advanced concept that allows significant savings in construction cost and time while reducing, to a large extent, the negative effects on the environment. This solution, similar to the recently completed Barcelona Metro Line 9, integrates station platforms, train storages, crossovers, bypass tracks, ancillary areas and utility corridors inside a single tunnel. Each of the underground stations consist of a cut-and-cover entrance structure and ventilation shafts, that also serve as emergency exits. The excavations for the station structures and shafts can be done on one side of the street with nominal impact on traffic and utilities.

This paper presents a history of the planning, engineering and construction completed for the railroad tunnel crossing part of the West Elizabeth Avenue Storm Drainage Project, undertaken to relieve flooding within the West Elizabeth Avenue area in Linden, NJ. The Railroad Crossing Contract is part of the larger Linden Drainage Improvements Project consisting of a new gravity storm sewer system. The improvements are required to provide additional storm drainage for the City of Linden and the Merck Pharmaceuticals manufacturing facilities in the City of Linden.

Designing an appropriate tunnel blasting pattern reduces the cost of rock breakage and subsequent operations such as loading, haulage and support of tunnels. For that reason, we developed a software that designs tunnel blasting patterns. Using this software, three different tunnel blast design models based on parallel hole cut, namely, Swedish, Konya and Energy Balance, were investigated and compared for a virtual tunnel. Accordingly, blasting patterns were designed, for different cross sections. The trend of parameters such as specific charge and specific drilling as functions of tunnel cross-section was determined for each model. Our results show that, in general, The Swedish model gives lower specific charge and specific drilling compared to other models.

Spontaneous combustion in underground coal mines has become a serious problem particularly in the caved area (gob). Recent statistic has shown that approximately 17% of total 87 underground coal mine fires in the United States are attributed to spontaneous combustion (De Rosa, 2004). Spontaneous combustion results from a self-heating process in exothermic conditions. The accumulated heat, if not removed, is conducive to the rapid increase of temperature and may result in mine fires or explosions. It is well accepted that the interaction between oxygen and coal substances is the main cause for spontaneous combustion, while other factors such as pyrite, moisture, and bacteria play a secondary role to the self-heating of coal. Therefore, only coal oxidation is considered in this study. Coal oxidation occurs as coal comes into contact with air. This process involves complex phenomena in terms of heat transfer, chemical surface absorption, and energy balance related to inherent properties of coal (Wang et al., 2003). For simulation purpose, overall reactions can be simplified as suggested by Mitchell (1990): C + O2 CO2 + heat [65°- 94°C] (1) CO2 + C 2CO + heat [100°- 150°C] (2) Stoichiometric reactions (1) and (2) show that 2.66 grams of oxygen are required to oxidize 1.0 gram of carbon. Once the temperature exceeds 100°C, the reaction has little chance to stop. The crucial step in reducing spontaneous combustion risk is locating the ignition point of spontaneous combustion (hot spot). This information is useful in the effort of developing a preventive method effectively. In this study, this was conducted based on the best gathered information: ventilation surveys conducted in an existing longwall mine located in the western US; the laboratory experiments performed on a physical gob model; and the CFD models to investigate the flow behavior in the gob, the oxidation of coal, and heat transfer phenomena. The hot spot location is determined as a function of oxygen concentration and gob temperature. The critical values are the following: 5% (by volume) for oxygen and 100°C for gob temperature. CHARACTERISTICS OF GOB MATERIAL AND MODELS Permeability Concept Permeability is one of the key parameters in any study dealing with porous medium. This is determined by particle size and the ratio of void volume to the total volume (porosity) of porous medium. This relationship is known as the Carman-Kozeny equation (Scheidegger, 1957) and is given mathematically as [ ] where k* = theoretical specific permeability, m2 dm = the mean particle size, m n = porosity However, permeability tests with various particle sizes were carried out at the University of Utah?s ventilation model (Figure 1) to verify this relationship. These tests indicated a necessity to modify this theoretical relationship. A factor of 0.898 was obtained to make up the different between theoretical permeability and the experimental one. The modified version of (3) is given by: [ ] This equation is used to determine permeability of the simulated mine gob throughout the study. [ ] Mine Gob Material The gob is represented by zones filled with material of given size distribution. For physical measurements and CFD simulations, the material used were crushed rock and coal. Due to compaction, three different characteristics of gob material were used in the model: unconsolidated, semiconsolidated, and consolidated. In the real condition, the largest coal-rock particles are more likely to be located in the area behind the shields. This material is freshly broken and unconsolidated. The size of these broken particles is based on a study carried out by analyzing images taken from the area behind the shields in three coal mines in the United States (Pappas and Mark, 1993). The results have shown that the mean size of materials behind the shields is about 1.22 m. The permeability associated with this size was then obtained from (4) and permeability tests. This was 4.68 x10-7 m2. For semiconsolidated and consolidated zones, due to the lack of experimental data, these were determined through CFD simulations. These simulations were designed by assigning a permeability of 3.15 x 10-8 m2 for consolidated zone and 7.98 x 10-9 m2 to the other zone. The airflow pattern in the gob assigned with given permeabilities was expected to follow the experimental distribution (Brunner, 1985). The mean particle sizes for the semi-consolidated and consolidated zones were 0.02 and 0.006 m, respectively; smaller than those of the unconsolidated zone. Figure 2 shows the 3D view of permeability changes in the gob.

The iron nugget process is an economical, environmentally friendly, cokeless, single-step pig iron making process. Residence time dependent process requirements for production of pig iron nuggets at a fixed furnace temperature (1425 C) were investigated. Three chemically and physically different products were produced after complete reduction to iron, depending on the residence time in the furnace. These products were direct reduced iron (DRI), transition direct reduced iron (TDRI), and pig iron nuggets (PIN). The increase in the carbon content of the system as a function of residence time was detected by optical microscopy and Microhardness measurements. Sufficient carbon dissolution for the production of pig iron nuggets was obtained after 40 minutes residence time. The pig iron nuggets produced had chemical and physical properties similar to blast furnace pig iron. They were liquid state products and slag was completely separated from the metal.

A multiyear, comprehensive study of flotation reagents used in phosphate beneficiation was conducted. The study involved the evaluation of pure fatty acid compounds, comparison of various anionic collectors and testing of iso-acids. Various C12 to C22 fatty acids were tested as Florida phosphate collectors. The saturated fatty acids were found to be very poor collectors when using the standard conditioning procedure, whereas the unsaturated C16 to C22 fatty acids showed fair to good phosphate collecting ability. The C18 fatty acids oleic, impure oleic and linoleic and the C20 eicosenoic acid were shown to be the best phosphate collectors. The best flotation results were obtained using Liqro GA tall oil and oleic acid. Four isostearic/iso oleic acid type fatty acid collectors were compared with a commercial grade oleic acid and with Liqro GA tall oil as phosphate collectors using standard laboratory conditioning and flotation procedures. The most selective collector evaluated was Century 1108, a high isostearic acid-type reagent. However, it was concluded that this excellent-performing reagent was too expensive for commercial use. Overall, the most promising reagent was probably Century MO-5. This collector is essentially an iso-oleic acid/stearic acid mixture (not isostearic acid), and it costs much less. This program laid a sound foundation for developing single collector, all anionic flotation processes.

In 1994, the East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD) commenced a system-wide Seismic Improvement Program to protect their facilities from catastrophic damage. A primary focus of this program has been on retrofitting the 75-year old Claremont Tunnel, which crosses the active Hayward Fault zone. A large earthquake on the Hayward Fault could generate enough right-lateral fault slip to effectively sever this important lifeline. The retrofit project involves construction of a new bypass tunnel through the Hayward Fault zone, together with systematic contact grouting and localized structural repair of the existing concrete liner. Several innovative design measures have been incorporated into the seismic retrofit design, including an oversized tunnel cross section, backfill concrete side drifts, seismic isolation of an internal structural pipe, and shear fuses in the final lining.

A section of the largest Superfund site in the country has become a success story for engineering innovation and for cooperative problem solving. “Superfund site” and “success story” are phrases that are not commonly found in the same sentence. Yet, their use seems justified. The project’s certification of construction completion from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) includes a commendation. It reads, “for completing the project nearly a year ahead of schedule, at a cost substantially less than estimated originally and without com-promising the requirements for protection of human health and safety or the environment.” The EPA director who issued that certification also referred to the project as “a positive example of cooperation among all who have a stake in the outcome.”

Ordinary portland cement (OPC) is the key pozzalonic component of the concrete mix widely used as a construction material worldwide. B illions of tons of OPC are used in the construction industry each year. However, calcinations of limestone and silica that produce OPC also produce almost an equal amount of C O2 during the cement manufacturing process. Thus, OPC production accounts for nearly 7% of all anthropogenic C O2 emissions each year. The main objective of this study was to develop a geopolymer-based composite to be used as a substitute for OPC in concrete application to significantly lower the carbon footprint of the construction industry. A waste material produced during the coal combustion process was used as the main raw material for the geopolymer-based composite. It was mostly the nonmetallic content of the F-type fly ash produced from the combustion of bituminous coal. The authors envisioned extracting some of the valuable metal oxides from fly ash prior to using the major nonmetallic portion of the fly ash for geopolymer concrete application. The results obtained from this study showed that the compressive strength of geopolymer concrete compares favorably with that of conventional concrete prepared using OPC.

Tunnel and shaft plugs have been designed to assist in construction of new and rehabilitation of existing tunnels and shafts. Tunnel plugs have been used to provide construction access for side by side tunnels, separation of raw and treated water, and to allow operation of one tunnel during construction of a nearby tunnel. Shaft plugs have been used to seal up surface openings to tunnels and to prevent seepage of water to the surface through adjacent tunnels or shafts. The design construction details of tunnel and shaft plugs are provided. Typical examples of tunnel and shaft plugs are provided.

The currently known and used plastics and rubber recycling or sorting processes cannot be applied efficiently and economically due to large amounts of fine bulky materials (<3 mm). These wastes are mostly given to specialized landfill sites. Starting out from classical and traditional beneficiation processes a new research project was initiated to work on certain new ways to efficiently separate plastic material mixes. First basic results show that the use of new and improved thermal beneficiation methods is a great implementation in the field of plastics separation. The results can be further increased by a suitable combination with other methods as well. This leads to high-quality and almost pure separated plastics and rubber products, easy to sell on recycling product markets.

The MTA in conjunction with LIRR, are in the process of expanding one of the largest commuter railroads in the country, with over 260,000 passengers a day. The LIRR, which provides 700 passenger trains every 24 hours, can?t continue on the present growth course as a joint tenant in Penn Station with Amtrak and NJT. For this reason, in conjunction with the fact that over 53% of LIRR?s current riders into Penn Station are ultimately bound for the East Side of Manhattan opening, have created the need for the expansion of the LIRR. The complete expansion will cost approximately 6.3 billion dollars and all of the contracts are to be completed by 2013.

Environmental Considerations With significant increases in bulk coal movements through terminals, operators are under constant social and political pressure to reduce or remove environmental pollution problems incidental to their operations. To meet these requirements, both equipment manufacturers and terminal designers are endeavoring to design equipment and systems with stringent environmental controls. The most challenging environmental problems facing coal terminal designers and developers are terminal siting restrictions, dust control, and noise abatement. Terminal Siting Finding a suitable site can be a difficult problem because of public concern over coal dust or the impact of a terminal on the surrounding community or natural habitat of the area. Often the only suitable flat land available for terminal development is on a tidal estuary or salt water marsh with great environmental value. In many cases a period of four to six years of full environmental and social assessment has been needed. A recent example of such difficulties is the expansion at Roberts Bank, British Columbia, where environmental impact assessment studies and their public review took almost six years from initial expansion applications until the time of approval. Dust Control Modern coal terminal dust control techniques usually consist of water sprays at strategic locations to suppress dust. The application points include rail car or barge dumper, main conveyor transfers, perimeter sprays around stockpiles, stacker/reclaimer, ship-loader transfers, and loading spout. The water sprays may include a chemical wetting agent or surfactant to reduce the water requirement and increase effectiveness. Recently there have been advances with development of effective micro foam agglomerating agents. In these systems, a micro foam with very small bubble sizes is sprayed into the coal stream. The foam fills the interstices between coal particles and wets the coal fines. These systems have proven to be very effective and usually one application before stockpiling and one upon reclaiming will markedly reduce the coal dusting. Stockpile perimeter sprays can be operated either manually or at the sophisticated terminal, actuated by a computerized control system that senses key environmental conditions such as humidity, precipitation, and wind velocity. Most modern terminals collect the drainage from the stockpile area, remove the solids in settling basins, then recirculate the water to reduce water requirements and effluents from the site. Dusting of long-term storage stockpiles can be reduced by spraying the piles with chemical resin or latex binding compounds to seal the surface. These compounds also can minimize erosion of the pile by rainfall. Dust collection with air evacuation systems and cyclone or wet scrubbers can be used at key areas such as rail car dumpers, main conveyor transfers, and ship-loader spouts. The trend in dust control is away from dust collection since most dust collectors are high maintenance items requiring good operator supervision and servicing. Coal handling conveyors are usually open and uncovered. However, in areas requiring special attention they may be covered or even completely enclosed. Dust generation from terminal roads is often a significant amount of the total dust emitted from a terminal. To reduce this dusting, roadways where traffic is heavy can be paved or sprayed by water trucks. Speed limits can be enforced and use of tracked mobile equipment for stockpile handling rather than rubber-tired loaders is encouraged by authorities. Noise Abatement Terminals located close to residential areas are often faced with noise control problems. Noise can be one of the most difficult environmental problems to solve. Usually, use of electrically-powered equipment is encouraged to reduce noise levels. Rail car dumper houses can be totally enclosed to reduce both dust and noise emissions. Ceremonies for the induction of five mining industry pioneers into the National Mining Hall of Fame will be on Sept. 12, 2009 at the Charles F. Barber Pavilion of the Museum Convention Center in Leadville, CO. The five inductees are: Paul A. Bailey, 82, Richard T. Moolick, 89, William Braden and Alonzo Pawling and Henry Harnischfeger. Paul A. Bailly was president of Bear Creek Mining Co., the U.S. exploration subsidiary of Kennecott Copper, from 1961 to 1967. In 1968, he joined Occidental Petroleum Corp. and was tasked with creating the company?s international mining division, Oxymin, which he led as president through 1983. During his distinguished career, Bailly participated in numerous significant mineral discoveries, developed a new exploration philosophy and made important additions to the mineral exploration literature. William Braden was the first to recognize the immense potential of the El Teniente orebody in Chile. He founded Braden Copper Co. and developed the El Teniente Mine which now, 100 years later, remains the world?s largest underground copper mine. Braden?s endeavor survives to-day as the El Teniente division of the Chilean state copper company, CODELCO. T. (Dick) Moolick established a lasting legacy in the mining industry, first during a 35 year career with Phelps Dodge Corp. and then as the driving force in establishing the National Mining Hall of Fame and Museum in Leadville. The Hall of Fame and Museum ? a monument to the memory of the men and women who pioneered the discovery and development of the United States? natural resources ? has become one of the fi nest museums in the western United States.
