Barite, the sulfate of barium, occurs in many geological environments in sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks. The commercial deposits of barite may be classified into three major types. 1. Vein and cavity fillings that occur in rock fractures, along bedding planes, and in various solution structures. 2. Bedded deposits in which barite occurs as the principal mineral or cementing agent in stratiform bodies in sedimentary rocks. 3. Residual deposits occurring in unconsolidated material formed by the weathering of preexisting rocks. The geologic characteristics of each type of deposit are of fundamental importance to the successful search, development, and economic use of barite deposits.

[New stochastic process models are developed to calculate the probability of various fill levels in section feeders as a function of vehicle interarrival times, payloads and feeder-discharge rates. These models may be utilized to establish the minimum feeder-discharge rate necessary to prevent a feeder, with a particular surge storage capacity, from constraining the section's production rate. In addition, it is shown how the output from these models may also be utilized to calculate the probability of various flow rates at junctions in the conveyor haulage network, enabling one to size gathering belts. The model provides a basis for optimizing, (in economic terms) capacity specifications for feeders and conveyor belts in the materials-handling system by considering tradeoffs in the size of the two types of units.]

HIGH SPEED RAILWAY NETWORK Spain is a very adequate country to develop the high speed railway network thank to its geographical feature which has a 600km long radius, from Madrid- the capital that covers mostly the whole country. Therefore, the railway is a major competitor of the airline. In Spain, the new access to the north and northwest is nowadays the most important railway project which will allow a significant saving of time in the near future to the central plateau and the northern territories. Time savings as well as strict environmental considerations have been the main objective of various studies during the last decade leading to Guadarrama and Pajares tunnels as ones of the optimum solutions. Cordoba-Malaga high speed railway, the extension of the present Madrid—Sevilleline, through the Abdalajis range and the rail project to cross oriental Pyrenees between Spain and France are another two samples of large tunnels currently underway. In these four projects, the ground already encountered and to be soon encountered is highly variable, from very hard granite and gneiss in Guadarrama and Pertus to very poor argillite in Abdalajis, shale in Pajares and schist in Pertus. A number of faults are also expected. Hence, double shield hard rock TBM has been chosen. Figure 1 shows a general scheme in four projects. These four projects represent a total of 2 × 68 km of which 87 km are under DRAGADOS contracts. PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN BY DRAGADOS Guadarrama Tunnels This project is the longest twin tunnel with 28.377km, in Spain and considered one of the longest in Europe. The operating speed will be 300 km/h. This tunnel will link Madrid and the north territories through Guadarrama range. (Figure 2). The south portal is placed at el. 997.8m above the sea level. The tunnel starts with an inclination of 3‰, increasing until 15‰. After 6,620m length, the tunnel passes under the Morcuera ridge with an overburden of 960m. After 13,400m length, the elevation is 1,024m which is the highest point, and then the tunnel declines with a slope of 9.5‰, 2‰ and 19‰ until the north portal in Segovia province. Horizontal stresses are caused by global plate tectonic forces. During 1995 alone, they were largely responsible for closing two U.S. longwall mines. This paper presents six case histories from Pennsylvania. West Virginia, Kentucky and Alabama. In each case history, a mine encountered roof falls or difficult ground conditions in the headgate, caused by horizontal stress concentrations. The problems are detailed and the control measures adopted are described. In most cases, nearby longwall panels without stress concentrations were trouble-free. The paper also discusses detailed measurements made at two adjacent Pennsylvania longwalls. One headgate was oriented to avoid a horizontal stress concentration, and the other was not. Eliminating the stress concentration dramatically reduced roof support loads and roof deformation. The paper concludes that proper panel orientation and sequence is the key to maintaining headgate ground control. The optimum orientation is not parallel with the maximum horizontal stress, as previously thought but rather 200 in the stress shadow of the gob. Other stress control techniques, including artificial support, are briefly discussed.

In October 1999, Liebherr-America, Liebherr Construction and Liebherr Mining Equipment held anopen house at its Newport News, VA, plant. The open house was held to celebrate the company’s50th anniversary and to demonstrate the new TI 272mining truck. Attending the open house members of the media, vendors and company representatives from all over the world. In his introductory comments, company president Peter Eller announced Liebherr’s dedication to expanding its presence in North America. Liebherr now has 30 dealers across the United States. As part of the open house, a brief history of Liebherr was presented, beginning with its creation in1949. Liebherr engineering and sales representatives were available to answer questions.

Ceveland-Cliffs uses a specialized software package in mine planning at the Empire Mine, an iron ore mine it manages on Michigan’s Marquette Iron Range. The application puts together years of mining experience that began in the early 1960s on the eastern end of the Marquette Range. The Empire Mine is in its 38th year of production. It uses the software to model a complex and highly variable low-grade magnetite ore body, capturing the economics of mining and processing to the final product. With special attention given to geostatistical methods, the software is used for all geologic modeling, ore reserve estimation, ore control, pit design and short- and long-range planning.

Two great revolutions in mining occurred during the 20th century. The first took place almost 100 years ago (1903-1905) with Daniel Jackling’s experiment in the economies of scale for large-scale mining at Bingham Canyon. Jackling’s ideas changed the focus of base metal exploration toward lower-grade, high-tonnage deposits. The second revolution was the impact of environmental and social concerns on mining. It started near the end of the 20th century and is still under way. This article speculates on the effects of this second revolution on the future of mineral exploration.

Recent advances in computing, rendering, and display technologies have generated increased accessibility for virtual reality (VR). VR allows the creation of dynamic, high-fidelity environments to simulate dangerous situations, test conditions, and visualize concepts. Consequently, numerous products have been developed, but many of these are limited in scope. Therefore, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health researchers developed a VR framework, called VR Mine, to rapidly create an underground mine for human data collection, simulation, visualization, and training. This paper describes the features of VR Mine using self-escape and proximity detection as case studies. Features include mine generation, simulated networks, proximity detection systems, and the integration and visualization of real-time ventilation models.

The recently completed in-pit crushing and conveying project at Phelps Dodge's Morenci Mine is rated among the world's leading materials handling projects. The operation involves the crushing and transport of more than 109 kt/ d (120,000 stpd) of copper ore, using regenerative conveyors capable of providing more than 5.5 MW (7000 hp) of equivalent electrical energy. The Morenci Mine is located 330 km (200 miles) east of Phoenix, AZ. Phelps Dodge Corp. owns an 85% interest in the mine. The remaining 15% is owned by Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. and Sumitomo Corp. Copper has been continuously produced from the Morenci district since the late 1800s. Until 1989, run-of-mine ore was transported from active mining faces to the Morenci and Metcalf concentrators by truck and rail haulage. In that year, a system of in-pit, semi-portable crushing plants and overland conveyors was commissioned. This substantially reduced truck haulage and effectively eliminated rail haulage in the pit. The system used two semi-portable, in-pit crushing stations equipped with 60/89 gyratory crushers. The crushed ore from both plants reported to the first of two overland belt conveyors, arranged in series, for transport from the pit to a coarse ore stockpile. The system was "backed-up" by existing locomotive rail haulage.

Scenario-level uncertainty is a representation of large-scale differences encountered when considering ultimate mining pits optimized over various subsets of stochastic realizations. Accounting for scenario-level uncertainty allows mine plans to be assessed against several probabilistic subsurface interpretations. Scenario-level uncertainty is found through clustering stochastic geostatistical realizations and optimizing final pits across the realizations in each cluster. Where these pits are geometrically different, plans for each scenario differ. Knowing these differences allows the value of each planning alternative to be assessed based on the value and relative probability of each scenario. These results also facilitate the use of formal decision-making frameworks for planning, leading to optimization that better represents the full statistical characterization of the deposit. An example utilizing this approach evaluates both infrastructure placement and drilling program requirements. In both cases, scenario-level uncertainty improves initial plans by limiting opportunity costs and identifying additional potential.

The Yankee Gulch sodium minerals project (YGP) is a solution mining project operated by American Soda. The mine operates on a federal lease administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Commercial operations began in November2000. In 1964, Irv Nielsen discovered nahcolite mineralization where the YGP pilot plant is now located near the Piceance Creek in Rio Blanco County, Colorado (Nielsen, 1969).Development of the project accelerated after Williams Corp., of Tulsa, OK, joined with American Alkali in1996 to form American Soda. Pilot testing by American Soda led to commercial permitting, plant design, construction and startup. Figure 1 shows the location of the Yankee Gulch leases and the location of the upper and lower plant sites.

The field demonstration portion of the course was conducted June 10 at wlh Construction Co.?s yard in Denver, CO. The full-scale field demonstration presents many types of drilling and grouting equipment in operation as well as numerous grouting methods performed under various field conditions.

The paper considers the selection of control instrumentation for a modern flotation plant, as well as the best interpretation and most effective use of the process data obtained. Process control computer availability is considered from the outset. A general philosophy of control is proposed which leads toward a system that is its own reliability monitor. The bulk of the problems are in grinding and classification. Alternative control methods are described that use particle size measuring devices. Flotation controls, based to a large extent upon on-stream X-ray analysis, are reviewed in detail. Reagent control methods are also examined. Methods to analyze the data obtained from the various measurement devices are introduced. These methods would enable an estimate of the validity of the data and require some redundant information. Another objective of these methods is the protection of operating equipment from possible control malfunctions. Although the discussion generally considers some degree of computer usage, this paper attempts to describe instrumentation and data analysis methods that enable control with or without the process control computer.

INTRODUCTION The Point Lepreau nuclear generating station was constructed in the late 1970's and early 1980's by the New Brunswick Electric Power Commission. Point Lepreau is a small peninsula on the north shore of the Bay of Fundy, about 55 km west of St. John, New Brunswick. Cooling water for the plant was to be obtained from and discharged into the Bay of Fundy by the system of shafts and tunnels illustrated in Fig. 1. The design engineer for the cooling water system was Albery, Pullerits, Dickson and Associates, Ltd., Toronto. Ferrera-Resco Ltd, Windsor, Ontario, was contractor for construction of the cooling water shaft and tunnel system, which was done between 1976 and 1979. The senior author was project manager for Ferrera-Resco, the junior author served as consultant to Ferrera-Resco on evaluation of certain geotechnical questions which arose during construction. SITE CONDITIONS Geology Except for limited overburden soils at the onshore shaft sites, the tunnels and shafts were constructed entirely in Triassic conglomerate, sandstone, and siltstone, with some shale interbeds. The bedding strike averaged about N6°E, The dip was to the west at about 30° along the Discharge Tunnel and 40° along the Intake Tunnel. Rock along the Intake Tunnel was mostly sandstone and siltstone and more thinly bedded, with RQ D generally in the range of 50 to 60%. Rock along the Discharge Tunnel tended to be coarser sandstone and conglomerate and more thickly bedded, with higher RQ D averaging about 80%. The ever increasing energy costs associated with mining at depth has become an important issue that needs to be addressed for future sustainable production. Vale Inco Limited?s Creighton Mine being the deepest has the highest energy cost per ton due to the ventilation system requirements. A review of the ventilation systems was undertaken with respect to current practices and identification of opportunities to the practical application of technology that would facilitate energy savings. Energy conservation initiatives such as time of day controls have been implemented; however there still remained some opportunity for further reduction. Based on previous studies that identified opportunities due to actual time spent in the workplace, our mining method and ventilation design, it was determined that Ventilation on Demand (VOD) could provide further additional energy reductions with respect to our auxiliary fans. A pilot project has recently been initiated to apply a Ventilation on Demand concept to two 112 kW auxiliary fans and their related workings located on the 2340m level of Creighton Mine. The project objective is to determine the practical methodology and application of this technology in the field. This project involves the installation of variable frequency drive (VFD) starters on the auxiliary fans to allow variable volume (through speed control) based on demand. The required flow is determined based on equipment and/or personnel via identification tags. The Fans adjust to the flow requirements as measured by flow sensors. Since the fans are sized for the final requirements the required flows can be achieved regardless of system length. Energy savings are realized by supplying only the volumes (power) as required and only when required. This paper discusses the rational and program being tested at the VALE Inco Limited, Creighton Mine.

Under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), the international seabed area (Area) and its resources are the common heritage of humanity (CHH). Patent rights can be incompatible with the CHH doctrine and its underlying principles because patent holders might charge unjustifiably high prices to license patented technology for exploring and exploiting the Area’s resources (creating a "patent holdup" situation), might choose not to license, or might license exclusively when doing so would contravene CHH principles. However, a reasonable patent licensing regime can contribute to sharing the benefits derived from the Area and promote environmental sustainability. Provisions of the UNCLOS that stipulated compulsory technology and financial transfers were removed in the 1994 Agreement relating to the Implementation of Part XI of the UNCLOS but to promote equity and sustainability I propose a voluntary licensing regime modeled on the concept of reasonable and non-discriminatory patent licensing that has been used in other contexts. The International Seabed Authority or another entity will need to coordinate and promote this licensing regime through governance of intellectual property derived from the Area. This proposed approach can better effectuate the CHH doctrine and its underlying principles.

Two integral components of the 30 CFR 48 training requirements mandated for new miners, newly employed experienced miners, and the annual refresher training of all miners are hazard recognition and prevention of accidents. In these categories, instruction shall include the recognition and avoidance of hazards present in the mine, and a review of accidents and their causes. Unlike instruction preparation for fact-based material, program development for hazard recognition places a particular challenge before safety-training specialists because they are often limited in their ability to adequately gauge the trainees' levels awareness prior to training. Further, they must also assure that the training is relevant, and it is presented in a thought-provoking manner. Computer-based instruction is particularly well suited for assisting trainers in developing hazard- recognition topics because it can be used in pre-training and post-training modes for assessment of training effectiveness, in addition to use as a presentation tool. Therefore, this paper will present a recent approach developed at Penn State to apply this technology for assessment and instruction of accident prevention through hazard recognition, with an application prepared for surface coal mines.

The Jinping-II hydroelectric project in China features four parallel headrace tunnels approximately 18-km- (11-mile-) long. Two will be excavated by tunnel boring machines (TBM) and two by drill-and-blast. A nearby fifth tunnel is being excavated by a 7.2-m (23.6-ft) TBM to draw down ground water in advance of excavating the headrace tunnels. Unique onsite assembly of a 12.43-m (40.7-ft) main beam TBM and backup system was completed on Sept. 18, 2008 in the remote mountains of the Sichuan province. The equipment was assembled onsite, without previously having been assembled and tested in a factory, using a method called onsite first time assembly (OFTA). This paper addresses the following topics: ? Project description including geology and terrain. ? The decision process leading to onsite, first time assembly, the assembly process and logistics, and lessons learned. ? Design features of the TBM and backup system. ? Operational history from startup to the writing of this article.
