Introduction Gold mining on an industrial scale is becoming increasingly dependent on low-grade refractory sulfide ores that contain large amounts of pyrite (FeS2) and arsenopyrite (FeAsS). Gold is usually present as sub-microscopic particles dispersed evenly throughout the sulfide matrix. Without some form of preoxidation, efficient recovery of this finely disseminated gold through cyanide leaching is hampered because the surface of the sulfide particle becomes passivated and impervious to penetration of the cyanide. Traditional methods for recovery of refractory gold from arsenopyrite ores include roasting and autoclave leaching. A modem alternative method is to preoxidize the mineral using the bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans prior to attempting to re- cover the gold through cyanidation. The bioleaching of arsenopyrite ores presents a problem in the mobilization of large quantities of arsenic, present both in the +5 and +3 ionic states. Dissolved arsenic species pose a dual problem: they are -1 to the bioleaching process itself through inhibition of bacterial activity, and they also pose an environmental threat. The arsenate anion (AsO2) has been shown to be more toxic to living organisms, including Thiobacillus ferrooxidans, than the arsenate anion (AsO43) (Collinet and Morin, 1989). There is some disagreement as to the fate of arsenite in bioleaching solution. Mandl, Matulova, and Docekalova (1992) reported that dissolved arsenite concentration was constant during a long-term bioleaching study of chalcopyrite using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Torma and Oolman (1992) report that Thiobacillus ferrooxidans has been found capable of oxidizing As3+ to As5+. The solid products of arsenopyrite/pyrite bioleaching include jarosite (MFe3(SO4)2(OH)6 where M can be K+, Na+, NH4+ or H3O+), scorodite (FeAsO4.2H2O), ferric hydroxides, and ferric hydroxysufites (Carlson et. al., 1992; Van Breemen, 1982; Lazaroff et. al., 1982). The particular species formed is a function mainly of pH. Little study has been performed on the effect of solid products on bioleaching. Pesic and Kim (1993) showed that Thiobacillus ferrooridans cells served as a nucleation sites for jarosite particles, which grew rapidly and eventually killed the cell. Most bioleaching studies are performed at low pH&apos;s (<2.0) under uncontrolled conditions. By studying bioleaching of arsenopyrite under controlled pH conditions and at higher pH&apos;s (2.0 to 3.0), the distribution of iron and arsenic between the solid and liquid phases can be controlled, and their effects studied. The objective is to develop a bioleaching process that operates at high efficiency while keeping amounts of dissolved heavy metals low. Pesic, Stohok, and Torma (1993) demonstrated the usefulness of this approach in the leaching of cobaltite (CoAsS) concentrates. Materials and Methods The focus of this study was the bioleaching of arsenopyrite ore by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. The parameters studied included the effects of pH, and the effects of arsenate (AsO43 and arsenite (AsO2). pH studies included pH set initially but not controlled, and pH controlled continuously with NaOH or LiOH. Bioleaching results from two strains of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans with different adaptation histories were compared. Bioleaching experiments were conducted in 150 ml stirred glass reactors using a strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans adapted to arsenopyrite ore, supplied by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. These bioreactors were innoculated with stock cells grown on arsenopyrite ore for 14-16 days. Typical elemental breakdown for this ore was: As, 9.90%; Fe, 18.60%, Stot, 9.26%; Suifide, 7.50%; SiO2, 25.90%. Mineralogically, the ore contained both arsenopyrite and pyrite. Bioleaching efficiency was measured by withdrawing bioleach solution samples at selected intervals, filtering, and measuring the amount of dissolved cobalt, iron, and arsenic by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Because the precipitation of iron and arsenic at higher pH&apos;s would lead to unreliable results, a 100 mg tracer of cobaltite concentrate from the Blackbird mine in southern Idaho was added to solution. Dissolution of the cobaltite tracer was used to indicate bioleaching of the bulk arsenopyrite ore. "Mitigation may be considered a hurdle when it comes to environmental permitting. For complex projects with site specific mitigation plans, the time to devise those plans and get them approved can be a long and costly endeavor. However, mitigation options are expanding and the mitigation banking industry has grown tremendously over the last two decades, helping projects move forward with less debate. Mining companies are recognizing the value that mitigation banks provide in helping to shore up project timelines and costs. Where possible, companies are taking advantage of the opportunities to buy credits from thirdparty providers offering mitigation bank credits. In some instances, mining companies are taking matters into their own hands by establishing mitigation banks to realize their own mitigation freedom. That can have its advantages and disadvantages, as discussed below. All in all, the expansion of mitigation options has streamlined the permitting process, introduced flexibility, improved project permitting timelines and loosened the permitting girdle.Compensatory mitigationCompensatory mitigation involves actions taken to offset unavoidable adverse impacts to wetlands, streams and other aquatic resources and authorized by Clean Water Act section 404 permits and other permits. As such, compensatory mitigation is a critical tool in helping the federal government meet the longstanding national goal of ‘‘no net loss’’ of Waters of the U.S., both in acreage and function.Section 314 of the National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2004 required the Secretary of the Army, acting through the Chief of Engineers, to issue regulations “establishing performance standards and criteria for the use, consistent with Section 404 of the Clean Water Act, of on-site, offsite, and in-lieu fee mitigation and mitigation banking.” The provision also required that those regulations ‘‘maximize available credits and opportunities for mitigation, provide flexibility for regional variations in wetland conditions, functions and values, and apply equivalent standards and criteria to each type of compensatory mitigation’’ (73 FR 19595). The result was the Final Rule on Compensatory Mitigation for Losses of Aquatic Resources issued in 2008 (33 CFR Parts 325 and 332).”"

There is recent evidence that high frequency screening can be a viable alternative to hydrocyclone classification for a wide variety of grinding applications. However, since high frequency screening is a relatively new development, the decision to use screens generally must be based on full scale screening tests of a slurry material of interest. In this paper the authors employ mathematical simulation models as an aid to evaluating the use of screens versus hydrocyclones for closed circuit fine grinding. This approach is validated in a pilot plant study and then demonstrated for the design of full-scale grinding circuit, including classifier cost comparisons. For the case of maximum production rates versus product size, without a constraint on fine product solids densities, results indicate that screening with Derrick sandwich type cloths can give higher grinding circuit production rates with more narrowly sized products than when hydrocyclones are used. These results are explained in terms of the bypass and Sharpness Index of the respective classifier partition curves. Classifier cost comparisons for the full scale circuit show that although the installed cost of screens is substantially higher than equivalent capacity hydrocylone operations, even modest increases in circuit capacity caused by screens; can significantly reduce total grinding costs.

A thorough improvement in mine safety is contingent on many factors that require scientific decision-making for selection and prioritizing of important factors for safety improvement. Their analysis using an established scientific method can improve mines’ safety conditions and assist the administration for informed decision-making. This research establishes a mine safety evaluation index and proposes an integrative model based on the entropy weight and grey clustering methods. In the evaluation index, 27 significant factors of safety are identified and categorized into 7 criteria. The proposed evaluation system analyzes all indicators according to Pakistan’s current mine safety situation and their significance for potential safety improvement in the future. Results reveal that current safety practices are outdated due to a lack of mechanization in the mining industry and minimal capability of the management to achieve the desired safety targets. Appropriate safety policies and safety education are missing in the daily working environment. The lack of overseeing the execution of safety operations and the lack of ambition and strong work ethic workers contribute to the paucity of mines’ safety conditions. The prevention and control systems to manage risks and hazard are not in place, and the working environment in mines remain difficult. Therefore, to have enhanced mine safety, important factors can be addressed in chronological order, as presented in this paper. The proposed methodological approach can be applied to other prioritization applications to analyze the indicators and determine the appropriate management strategies.

Salt, a non-metallic mineral whose use dates back to earliest history of mankind, and whose uses cover the widest range for any mineral raw material, is generally of widespread occurrence in commercially recoverable quantities in the oceans, in certain sedimentary rocks, in certain lakes, and in certain underground waters. Passing over geological detail, it may be said that, generally, all of the salt in the world has, at least once in geological history, been in solution in the oceans. The total salt content of today&apos;s oceans, said to equal 4.5 million cubic miles of rock salt, dwarfs the tremendous volume of salt in the sedimentary rocks. In 1958, United States production of salt was about 22 million net tons and world production about 82 million. About 3 percent of United States production is table salt, with chemical, municipal, industrial and agricultural uses taking the remainder. Mississippi River. Figure 1 has been expanded sufficiently to show also those salt occurrences and producing points which might economically ship salt into these states. Although widespread in occurrence, salt deposits and possible production areas generally show very sharp local boundaries. Salt-for non-table use is susceptible to ?place value?, a common problem in low valued raw materials, where transportation costs often exceed the value of the material f.o.b. the production point. Generally only large capacity mechanized salt producing operations can compete in United States markets, as contrasted to the many small local salt evaporators in less industrialized Mexico.

Deposits of metals in only slightly disturbed strata have been attributed to sedimentation processes contemporary with deposition of the strata. Recently this origin has been extended&apos; to a greater variety&apos; of deposits and local enrichment has been attributed to selective remobilization of metallic minerals in the host stratum. Effects attending metallization and deformation, and exact age&apos; of the metallization are compiled to establish the sequence of events in ore deposit histories in order to clarify importance of remobilization within a formation relative to introduction from an outside source into an fav¬orable host. The pertinence respectively of deposit; origin and geometry to the work of the mining geologist is reviewed. Dwarf faunas in the Clinton iron ore, Tully pyrite bed and Rammelsberg deposit, indicate abnormal metal ions in the sedimentary environment. Slight¬ly disturbed strata are host rocks in the Swedish Kolm, Timna, Kupferschieffer, and White Pine deposit; the latter two have ore only in conjunction with tectonic structures.

This study identifies nonfatal injury incidence rates, nature of injury, work activities, glove usage, and sources of hand and finger injuries in the U.S. mining industry, as reported to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) from 2011 to 2017. Hand and finger injuries occur at a rate of 6.53 per 1000 full-time employees, which is nearly double the rate of the next highest affected body part, the back.

The paper presents the results of a plant test using WEMCO 1 + 1 enclosed flotation machines for inert gas (nitrogen) flotation of by-product molybdenite from copper sulfide concentrate. Copper depressant consumption in the rougher flotation stage was reduced by 68% as reagent consuming oxygen was removed from the flotation air. Unlike other nitrogen flotation systems used in the industry, nitrogen is recovered above the flotation cells and from froth in tails and concentrate streams and recycled, resulting in minimal nitrogen makeup requirement.

Mining at Vale’s Creighton Mine has been active for nearly 120 years in Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. Being the deepest mine in the Sudbury region, mining induced seismicity is a common occurrence at Creighton Mine. Over the past five years, 26 large magnitude seismic events ranging from 2.5 Mn to 3.7 Mn (Nuttli) have occurred. Out of these large magnitude events, three 3.0+ Mn events occurred between April 2020 and January 2021. The majority of the 3.0+ Mn events are believed to be the fault-slip type that could be linked to the known major geological structures and/or long-term effect of mining over many years. The recent large magnitude events are believed to be triggered by high induced stresses while mining the first few stopes of a new lower horizon in the top-down centre out mining sequence.

"In recent years the gold mining industry has been challenged by declining metal prices as well as having to treat ores that have low grades and are refractory in nature. Many factors must be considered when metallurgical studies are designed to develop process design criteria for these type of ores. These factors are mostly related to the mineralogical and chemical compositions of the ores, the geological setting of the deposit and how the ore/waste will be mined, such as whether openpit or underground, the mine schedule, and the mine fleet type and capacity. The purpose of this paper is to provide an experience-based practical approach to how to select and characterize test samples as well as devise process development metallurgical studies for both oxide and refractory gold ores, and to provide insight into some of the matters that might go wrong during the course of the studies. This paper is intended as both a guide for someone new to the field and also as a reminder for those familiar with the field. IntroductionThe recent decline in ore grades and metal prices have challenged mining companies to reduce capital and operating costs associated with developing new mineral resources. In some cases, metallurgical studies have been sacrificed to prevent cost overruns resulting in inadequate mineralogical, chemical and metallurgical characterization. Consequences have included longer construction schedules, higher initial and working capital, higher operating costs and less than desirable plant performance (Whincup, 2010; Torres, Chaves and Meech, 1999).Mineralogy, geology, mining type and sequence, and the metallurgy of an orebody will determine the process development metallurgical study requirements and eventual process plant design. Therefore, once the geologist has an early indication of a prospective orebody, geologists, metallurgists, mining engineers, and social and environmental responsibility scientists should convene and devise a plan on how to exploit the orebody economically (Lunt, Ritchie and Fleay, 1997).Geologists may find a prospective orebody solely based on grade. However, if the orebody cannot be mined and processed economically, then it is deemed not to be a deposit. An example of this could be a refractory gold deposit, either sulfidic, carbonaceous or siliceous refractory or any combination of those, that may not be mined and processed economically due to reasons such as the physical location of the deposit, depth of the ore lode, or social and environmental concerns. Therefore, an early collaboration between all disciplines must be established.Each orebody may have its own unique mineralogical, geological and chemical characteristics (Guresin et al., 2012). These unique characteristics should be effectively sampled to reduce risks associated with process design and engineering efforts for the process development metallurgical studies. If the sample or samples are not representative of these unique characteristics, then the studies performed will be pointless. The project metallurgist in charge of conducting metallurgical studies should also possess general geology, mineralogy and mine engineering knowledge. Recommended readings are a book on understanding mineral deposits by Misra (2000) and articles on heap leach development by Scheffel (2014a and 2014b)."

In less than two years, Stratmin has discovered, explored, developed, financed and put into production by open pit, a large graphite mine. The deposit, hinted by airborne electromagnetic survey, was discovered in September 1987 through various ground geophysical surveys, diamond drilling and trenching. The open pit started production in February 1989, feeding a nearby leased mill at Notre-Dame-du-Laus (Quebec), having a processing capacity of 400 tons per day. A new 1,000 tonne per day mill was built at the mine site, in Lac-des-lies (Quebec) and began production in April 1990. The Lac-des-lies graphite operation is currently one of the largest of its kind in the world. Mine and mill facilities are operated by Stratmin Graphite, jointly owned by Stratmin Inc. (75%) and Imetal-France (25%), a wholly owned subsidiary of Imetal (France). From initial exports limited to Japan and United States, Stratmin Graphite is now exporting in fourteen different countries, attesting to the very high quality of its products, with grades ranging from 92% to 97% carbon. Among the numerous graphite deposits discovered in Canada, Stratmin Graphite Inc. has emerged as the leader and virtually the sole crystalline graphite producer in North America, operating on a continuous basis.

The Grasberg porphyry copper-gold deposit of Freeport Indonesia Inc., an 81% owned subsidiary of Freeport-McMoRan Inc., lies within the Ertsberg Mineral District in central Irian Jaya, Indonesia. The Grasberg deposit was discovered during a drilling campaign initiated in early 1988. Production at the open pit Grasberg deposit commenced in December 1989. The Grasberg copper-gold orebody is contained with a young igneous complex of dioritic composition which intrudes limestones of the Tertiary New Guinea Group. Alteration is typical of porphyry copper deposits worldwide except that higher grade primary chalcopyrite with significant gold values is associated with a centrally located zone of strong quartz stockwork.

Complete isolation of chromium (III) from the reference material (SARM 131), Upper Group 2 (UG2) chromite ore, and Merensky Reef mineral ore was achieved using ammonium phosphate salt as flux. Optimum pH (3.2–3.8) conditions and sample to flux ratios (1:25) were some of the factors that were critical for the complete isolation of chromium. Increasing the sample to flux ratio (1:50 excess) however resulted in the conversion of all the elements in the melt into a green solution (pH, 5.8–6.7). A different chromium compound was subsequently isolated from the green solution by allowing this solution to stand in an open vessel in a cupboard for a month during which time the pH decreased to pH 3.5–4.2. Quantitative analyses of chromium from the isolated precipitates of SARM 131, UG2 chromite ore, and Merensky Reef mineral ore indicated chromium contents of 41.87, 60.41, and 23.93% respectively which were very close to the chromium content in the original samples. Analysis of the chromium precipitates using IR indicated the presence of phosphates (1100–1200 cm−1 ) while SEM-EDX analysis showed the presence of microscopic crystalline particles with Cr, P, and O as the major elements. Further characterization of the chromium precipitates using XRD and Raman successfully identified the product as chromium (III) metaphosphate C-type (Cr(PO3)3, JCPDS no. 01-077-0672), in the isolated chromium precipitates.

Considerable amounts of the world&apos;s known reserves of elemental sulfur are found near the surface in areas of volcanic activity both active and inactive. Because such deposits cannot in general-be mined by the well-known Frasch process, and because other methods of recovery have not proven to be economically competitive except in isolated instances, at present these reserves remain relatively undeveloped. However, projections of world sulfur demand indicate that new sources of marketable sulfur will be needed in future years 2/, 19/. For this reason, recovery of elemental sulfur from these near-surface deposits is of continuing interest. Solvent extraction as an approach to recovery of elemental sulfur from open pit-mined ores of these non-Frasch deposits has received considerable attention particularly at the research and development level 3 /, 7/, l l /, 16/, 21/,23/, 29/ This method has been and continues to be attractive because it presents the potential of high sulfur recovery and purity of product coupled with a relatively simple process flowsheet in which low energy requirements and reasonable operating costs are thought to be possible. However, the physical and chemical characteristics of the native-sulfur ores, of elemental sulfur, and of the known solvents, have presented difficulties in the development of solvent extraction processes. Up to the present time, viable processes have not been realized within the framework of sulfur marketing conditions.

Despite its great potential utility, ion exchange has only achieved limited application in hydrometallurgy. To a significant extent this is due to the limitations of conventional ion exchange process design as well as the properties of the ion exchange resins themselves. Over the past decade several new ion exchange resins have been introduced with properties that make them potentially very useful for various hydrometallurgical separations. In addition, a novel ion exchange process called Reciprocating Flow Ion Exchange or Recoflo, which has been employed in the metal finishing industry for the last dozen or so years for chemical recovery and effluent treatment, has been shown to offer a number of unique and significant advantages over conventional I.X. technology.

The application of cutoffs during and after pit optimization is examined for a lower-grade multi-metallic copper deposit. Pit optimization requires calculation of the net revenue associated with each mining block, incorporating parameters such as metal prices, grades and expected recoveries, mining and processing costs, smelting and refining charges, and penalty element and royalty charges. Sensitivity analysis during pit optimization reveals which of these parameters have a significant effect on the total contained resource tonnage and total contained non-discounted revenue in the optimized pit. The cumulative effect of changing several of the more significant parameters is investigated. Application of a copper cutoff grade to a block inside the optimized pit could result in the less than optimal extraction of the resource. A block with copper grade below the applied cutoff could be economic due to the presence of other metals. Conversely, a higher copper grade block may be sub-economic. The relative merits of applying a copper grade cutoff, "equivalent grade" cutoff and dollar value per ton cutoff to blocks inside the optimum pit are discussed.

A flowsheet for the recovery of nickel and cobalt from laterite ores has been developed which involves acid leaching followed by hydroxide precipitation of the metal values and then releaching of the hydroxide cake with ammonia. Investigations of the chemistry of extraction of nickel by LIX® 84-1 and a developmental reagent, XI-84-IT, along with the physical properties of the organic phases are described. Based on these investigations, suggestions with regard to design of a solvent extraction plant and operating conditions are made.

Rock surrounding mine openings frequently is an impermeable type such as shale or granite. Most rock, however, has joints, bedding planes, cleavage planes, or other potential discontinuities. Permeability to fluids (gas or liquid) may exist via natural joints or fractures in an otherwise impermeable rock. In the mining situation, tectonic and induced tensile and shear stresses may be great enough to cause joints to open or fractures to develop in previously solid rock. The rock, as a result, becomes less self-supporting and may - require artificial support such as rock bolts or timber. Simultaneously, as fractures develop, permeable paths may be created. If fluid can be injected into a previously solid and impermeable rock mass, a logical conclusion is that a fracture (crack) flow path must be transmitting that fluid. The U.S. Bureau of Mines Laramie (Wyo) Energy Research Center has been evaluating results of in-situ oil shale fracturing (hydraulic or explosive) and retorting experiments by. a fluid (air) injection , and borehole air flow profile logging technique since 1956 (1, 14, 15). In the oil shale case, it is imperative to know the location and flow capacity (permeability) of natural fractures, if they exist, and induced fractures that inter-connect vertical wellbores at depths of fifty to several hundred feet. By injecting air into one wellbore in a system of several wells and measuring input volume and pressure while simultaneously measuring the output of other wellbores, the minimum areal extent of interconnecting permeable fractures can be determined. Exact locations (depths) of fractures and individual fracture flow capacities between wellbores can be determined by air flow profile logging (14, 15). Knowledge of fracture locations and permeability is essential to rational experimental in-situ retorting design.

Soda ash is produced in over 39 countries by the Solvay ammonia-soda process or by mining natural sodium carbonate deposits. The total production of soda ash in 1980 is estimated at slightly over 29 million metric tons. Synthetic production accounted for over 75% of this amount with the balance of production originating from natural sources (either trona or sodium carbonate-rich brines) found primarily in the United States, Mexico, Kenya, and Chad.

This paper proposes a framework for applying surrogate-based approaches to evaluate SEM construction, which can both benefit the uncertainty analysis in the design stage and real-time calibration during the construction process. The performances of four surrogate modeling approaches, namely back-propagation neural network (BPNN), support vector regression (SVR), random forest (RF), and polynomial chaos expansions combined with Kriging (PCK), were evaluated and compared. A variance-based global sensitivity analysis (GSA) was performed on the surrogate predictor to quantify the impacts of geotechnical parameters on the deformation responses induced by SEM tunneling. The Regional Connector Crossover Cavern project constructed in Downtown Los Angeles was set as the benchmark problem to demonstrate the efficiency and reliability of the proposed procedure.
