In order to systematically study the size effect on the shear strength of rock joints, this study used the computer-aided-manufacturing system to reproduce the artificial rock joints for saw-toothed joints, Barton's standard joint profiles of JRC = 4~6 and 18~20, and natural rock joint profiles. We divided, enlarged, reduced, and assembled these joint profiles to obtain joint specimens of various sizes ranging from 75 mm to 300 mm in length. The shear strengths of these joint specimens were tested under different normal stresses using a direct shear test apparatus. The surface conditions of the joints at failure were also examined. The size and geometry effects on the shear strengths of these joints of various sizes and configurations were evaluated based on the test results. Um die künstlichen Trennflächen für reguläre dreieckige Trennflächen, Bartonsche standardmäßige Querschnitte der Trennflächen von JRC = 4~6 und 18~20 und natürliche Querschnitte von Trennflächen wiederherzustellen, benutzt diese Forschungsarbeit das Computergestützte-Erstellungssystem, damit die Maßstabswirkung auf die Scherfestigkeit von Trennflächen systematisch untersucht werden kann. Die Querschnitte werden geteilt, vergrößert, verkleinert und zusammengesetzt, um Trennflächenproben in Längen variierend von 75 mm bis 300 mm zu erhalten. Die Scherfestigkeit dieser Trennflächenproben wird unter unterschiedlichen Normalspannungen mit einem Direktscherversuchsgerät getestet. Die Querschnittszustände der Trennflächen bei Versagen werden ebenfalls untersucht. Nach den Untersuchungsergebnissen werden die Maßstabs- und Geometriewirkung auf die Scherfestigkeit dieser Trennflächen verschiedener Größen und Konfigurationen ausgewertet. Pour étudier systématiquement l’effet de la dimension des fractures des roches sur leur résistance au cisaillement un système de creation de fractures artificielles à l’ordinateur a été employé. Des fractures artificielles triangulaires, profils de fractures de Barton avec JRC = 4~6 et 18~20, et profils de fractures naturelles ont été reproduits. Les profils des fractures ont été arrangés de manière à obtenir des échantillons de longueur entre 75 et 300 mm. Une boîte de cisaillement a été utilisée pour étudier la résistance des fractures au cisaillement, sous plusieurs conditions de contraintes normales. Les conditions superficielles des fractures après rupture ont été étudiées. Les résultats de ces essais, effectués sur plusieurs échantillons de dimensions et configurations variées, ont contribué à établir l’influence des dimensions et de la géométrie des fractures sur leur résistance au cisaillement.

Dilution of ore has a major impact on economics of a mine. The magnitude of dilution depends on mining method, stope dimensions, reef and host rock quality, wall support and drilling accuracy. The main contributing factor is the presence of very weak graphitic shear band of varying thickness in and around the reef. The reef, at Obuasi, is generally steeply dipping and open stoping is the predominant mining method. The stability of the stope walls limits the stope dimensions. Various options for allowing larger stopes for higher productivity and limiting dilution are analysed. The most economic way is to reinforce the walls with systematic cablebolt supports. This option does not only add the support cost but also requires additional cost of access development. These conflicting requirements are continually being optimised at the mine for the economics of dilution control. La dilution du minerai à un impact majeure sur l’économie d’une mine. La quantité de matériel diluant le minerai dépend de la méthode d’extraction, de la dimension des chantiers d’abattage, de la qualité du filon et de la roche mère, du support des épontes et de la précision du forage de production. Le facteur principal qui contribue à la dilution est la présence d’étroites zones cisaillées qui contiennent du graphite ayant différentes épaisseurs à l’intérieur et autour du filon. Le filon, à Obuasi, est généralement à fort pendage et la méthode d’abattage principale est par chantier long-trous. La stabilité des épontes est le facteur qui détermine la dimension des chantiers d’abattage. Differentes options ont été analysées de façon à permettre de plus larges chantiers de manière à augmenter la productivité tout en limitant la dilution. Le moyen le plus économique est de renforcer les épontes avec des cables d’acier cimentés forés de façon systématiques. Cette option n’augmente pas seulement les coûts de support mais aussi les coûts de développement. Ces besoins contradictoires sont continuellement revisés à l’opération afin d’optimiser l’économique par le contrôle de la dilution. Verdünnung des Erzes hat eine spürbare Auswirkung auf die Ekonomie einer Grube. Die Größe der Verdünnung hängt von gewinnenmethode, von den Stopemaßen, von der Reef- und Wirtsfelsenqualität, von der Wandunterstützung und von der bohrengenauigkeit ab. Der beitragende Hauptfaktor ist das Vorhandensein einer sehr schwachen graphitic Scherbandes unterschiedlichen Stärke in und um der Reef. Der Reef, bei Obuasi, taucht im allgemeinen steil ab und geöffnete Aufstemmung ist die überwiegende gewinnenmethode. Die Stabilität der Wand begrenz die Stope grösse. Verschiedene Wahlen für das Erlauben der größeren Stopes für höhere Produktivität und das Begrenzen von Erzesverdünnung werden analysiert. Die ökonomischste Weise soll die Wände mit systematischen Kableankerbolzenunterstützungen verstärken. Diese Wahl addiert nicht nur die Kosten der Unterstützung aber erfordert auch zusätzliche Kosten fuer Zugangsentwicklung. Diese kontroversen Anforderungen werden fortwährend an der Grube analysiert um die Verdünnungkontrolle zu optimieren.

Mintek has been developing Pt-based alloys for high temperature applications in aggressive environments, for example, land-based turbine engines, to replace the currently used nickel-based superalloys (NBSAs). The Pt-based alloys have a similar structure to the NBSAs, and since Pt is more chemically inert and has a higher melting point, the Pt-based alloys can potentially be used at higher temperatures. The greater chemical inertness of the Pt-based alloys compared to the NBSAs means that coatings can be simpler, or perhaps not even used at all, depending on the environment. TEM work was done at NIMS, Japan, to investigate the changes in the microstructure o f Pt-Al and Pt-Al-Ir alloys at elevated temperatures using in-situheating up to1100°C. Initial casting trials showed that work needs to be done to optimise casting parameters before commercialisation can take place. Room temperature tensile tests were performed and results were variable mainly due to microstructural differences. The alloy hardnesses were in the order of 300-350HV with ultimate tensile strengths of ~800 MPa and elongations of less than 10%. Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) spectroscopy, combined with cyclovoltammetry, has been successfully used to study the interactions between ethyl xanthate, heptyl xanthate, dithio-phosphate and propyl trithiocarbonate flotation collectors and a gold surface. Large, easily measurable responses have been obtained in the potential areas where the thiol collectors are known to interact with gold. The four collector types lead to differing SPR maximum values, with longer alkyl chains resulting in higher SPR responses, and the trithiocarbonate leading to the highest response values. The SPR responses differ considerably from the current density response at very anodic and cathodic potentials. There are indications that thiols might still be adsorbed at potentials as low as-300 mV (vs SHE). Keywords: Pyrometallurgy, circular furnace, PGM, platinum, Peirce-Smith converter, Zimbabwe The Zimplats Smelter, located on the northern part of the Great Dyke, at the Selous Metallurgical Complex, is the only PGM smelter in Zimbabwe. Zimplats? operations currently consist of the Ngezi Platinum Mine, which is a 1.5 Mt/a open-cast and 0.7 Mt/a underground mine, and a Concentrator and Smelter to which ore is transported 80 km by road. The final converter matte product is transported to Impala Refining Services in South Africa for refining and marketing. The Zimplats Smelter operations consist of a concentrate filtration plant, a Drytech flash dryer, a modified Elkem / Hatch 13.5 MVA circular furnace, two 10? x 15? Peirce-Smith converters, and a matte granulation plant. The Zimplats smelter uses a three-field electrostatic precipitator, supplied by ELB-Brandt, for removal of particulates in the gas streams from both the converter and furnace. Construction of the smelter commenced in 1995, under the BHP / Delta Gold of Australia joint venture. The furnace was lined mid-1996, and smelting operations commenced in 1997. Due to design challenges, the Elkem furnace was modified by Hatch in 1998, and the smelter had not reached full capacity when operations were suspended in 1999. Re-commissioning took place in January 2002.

In this paper, the effects of dynamic loads on the geometry of the failure zone occurring around underground openings, excavated in deep and massive rock masses, have been investigated. Following an elasto-plastic stress analysis of a two-dimensional underground opening under static conditions, dynamic loads have been applied. In the static and dynamic analyses, FLAC2D computer program has been utilized. Maximum ground acceleration value is selected as an input parameter. An index determining the relative size of the yield zone around the opening has been used for comparison of instabilities. In diesem Bericht wurden die Auswirkungen von dynamischen Lasten, auf die Geometrie der Bruchzone in der Umgebung von Untertagehohlräumen, die in tiefen und massiven Gebirge aufgefahren wurden, untersucht. Nach einer elasto-plastischen Spannungsanalyse eines zwei-dimensionalen Untertagehohlraumes unter statischen Beanspruchungen, wurden dynamische Lasten aufgebracht. Für die statischen und dynamischen Analysen wurde das FLAC2D Computer Programm verwendet. Die maximale Bodenbeschleunigung wurde als Eingabe Parameter gewählt. Zum Vergleichen der Unstabilitäten wurde ein Index verwendet, der die relative Grösse der Bruchzone in der Umgebung des Hohlraumes bestimmt. Dans ce papier, l’influence des chargements dynamique sur la géométrie de la zone en rupture observée autour des cavités profondes excavées dans des massifs rocheux ont été étudiées. Des chargements dynamiques ont été appliqués, dans le cas d’une modélisation bi-dimensionnelle de l’excavation d’une cavité profonde, sur la base d’une analyse élastoplastiques des contraintes en conditions statiques. Le code de calcul FLAC2D a été utilisé pour les analyses statiques et dynamiques. La valeur maximale de l’accélération du sol est choisie comme paramètre d’entrée. Un indice déterminant la taille relative de la zone sollicitée autour de la cavité a été utilisé pour comparer les différentes instabilités.

The position of Australia as a continuing long-term supplier of mineral sands, and their upgraded products, has been reinforced with the discovery of the extensive mineral reserves in the Murray Basin, an area covering parts of South Australia, New South Wales and Victoria. A major impurity in the Murray Basin is chromium, mainly present in ilmenite concentrates as individual chrome spinel grains. Magnetizing roast treatments are being evaluated as a means of removing the chrome spinel impurity from the ilmenite and as a result of the roast and magnetic separation treatments, the chrome spinels can be expected to be concentrated in the non-magnetic reject fractions. It is from these fractions that attempts were made in this study to recover a chromium-rich product by magnetic fractionation and by application of flotation. The high gauss non-magnetic rejects from the roasting of a primary and a secondary ilmenite fraction were magnetically fractionated to obtain a product with 40.5 and 28.7 per cent Cr2O3,respectively. From the high gauss non-magnetic reject from the roasting of a primary ilmenite, flotation produced a chromium-rich product assaying 29.5 wt per cent Cr2O3at 69.0 per cent recovery. In another test a magnetic fraction assaying 32.9 wt per cent Cr2O3was floated to yield a chromium-rich product with 39.7 wt per cent Cr2O3at 96.4 per cent recovery. X-ray diffraction patterns of all the products indicated that the spinel concentrated was a ferroan magnesiochromite with rutile, ilmenite and hematite as impurities. Since all products were from a single pass, further processing can be expected to remove the impurity minerals and yield higher grade products. The material produced from the Murray Basin ilmenites in this study had similar compositions to commercial chromite ores, except for titania levels that were much higher. The high titania levels were due to residual rutile in the products, but it is expected that this can be removed with further processing. The mineral sand deposits in the Murray Basin are scattered over a wide area and the amount of chromite that may be produced from each of these deposits is unlikely to be sufficient to support an export market. Consequently, any chromite produced in the Murray Basin will most likely need to be processed locally to value added products for a niche market such as chemicals production. Wheel loaders are widely used in many sectors due to their mobility, operational flexibility, and low costs. The literature is mainly focused on improving the hydraulic, mechanical, and electronic subsystems of these machines in terms of efficiency or developing strategies for controlling these systems. In this study, the effects of the loader operator and different working conditions on the loading performance were investigated. The study was carried out at the Can Lignite Enterprise (CLI), which is a major coal producer in Turkey. In the study, which lasted approximately four months, a total of 808 measurements were performed to investigate seven different scenarios. The effect of a single parameter on loading performance was investigated in the first six scenarios. The results showed that the biggest impact on loading performance was caused by the operator's experience with 63.4%. On the other hand, the worst and most ideal working conditions determined from the first six scenarios were tested in the seventh scenario. It was tested as a script. The test results showed that the loading performance was 285.5% more effective under the most ideal operating conditions compared to the worst operating conditions. In addition, in the study, the loading performances of five loaders with four different capacities were examined in terms of energy efficiency and it was determined that the Kawasaki 115 work machine, which has a higher model and lower engine operating hours, was more advantageous. In the study, various suggestions were developed in parallel with the research results. The most prominent and easiest to implement of these suggestions is related to the selection of the loader operator.

Silver tarnishes readily in common atmospheres and is accelerated in humid atmospheres. Tarnish is the formation of silver sulphide on the surface of silver when it is exposed to a wide range of sulphur-containing atmospheres. Tarnish is unattractive and highly undesirable, and can be removed either with a silver polish or a chemical dip. Dips are generally only recommended when heavy black tarnish cannot be removed with a polish, and care must be taken during cleaning because these can contain aggressive chemicals and give off hazardous and unpleasant smelling fumes. Polishes work best for large areas of plain undecorated silver, and form part of a regular cleaning programme. Some polishes contain chemicals that inhibit tarnishing, but these generally only have a short life. Several methods have been developed to reduce tarnish formation on Silver; these include alloying, surface treatment, and coatings. The authors evaluated a range of self-assembled monolayer (SAM) surface treatments and coatings in earlier research. Four treatments/coatings increased the time to noticeable tarnish by more than ten fold, and the results were reported at the International Corrosion Congress (ICC) in 2005, and at the Mint Directors Conference (MDC) in 2006. SAM treatment using 95% 1-hexadecanethiol (C16H34S) was found to give good anti-tarnish performance and showed potential for the commercial treatment of Sterling silver. Therefore research was performed to optimise the methods of application of this type of coating to provide an easier, faster, and more-user friendly technique to provide an anti-tarnish treatment. Rock engineering plays a crucial role in contributing to sustainable development in South African mining. A framework for this has been created through legislation and structures to encourage the mining industry to have a long and prosperous future. However, rock engineering input is an essential element to achieving success. The most accessible deposits have been mined in South Africa and although large reserves still remain, many of these are difficult to access and will require excellent rock engineering knowledge and skill in the future. This is borne out by the fact that more than 50 % of fatal accidents are related to rock engineering issues. Many of these may be addressed with rock engineering solutions which are not beyond current rock engineering technology. A reduction in fatalities and injuries contributes to a sustainable mining industry.

Horizontal belt filters are typically used for separation of relatively free filtering solids where good post treatment is required. He horizontal belt filter is a continuous filter with an endless cloth supported on a grooved carrier belt. The belt and cloth are driven around two rollers across a series of evacuated suction boxes. The feed suspension is introduced at one end of the filter and deliquored to produce a cake at the other end. The benefits of using horizontal belt filters are good cake washing, continuous and visible processing, fully automatic operation, flexibility, high capacity and relative high speeds of operation. If required, horizontal belt filters enable efficient counter-current washings to minimize the usage of wash liquid. The horizontal belt filter has applications in the following: [? Multiple wash stages, co-current, counter-current or direct washing can be added by increasing the length of the filter.

ABSTRACT: Settlements above fractured crystalline rock masses are rarely observed and in the past, geotechnical engineers would not expect substantial subsidence to occur in association with a deep tunnelling project. However, recent high precision levelling measurements along the Gotthard pass road in central Switzerland, have revealed up to 12 cm of subsidence along sections that pass several hundred metres above the Gotthard highway tunnel. Large-scale consolidation resulting from tunnel drainage and pore pressure changes in the rock mass are believed to be the contributing mechanism. This paper presents results from an extensive numerical modelling study focussing on the processes responsible for this subsidence. Results derived from 2-D discontinuum (i.e. distinct-element) and continuum (i.e. finite-element) modelling show that both discrete fracture deformation (i.e. fracture closure and shear) and poro-elastic consolidation of the intact rock matrix equally contribute to the observed magnitudes and shape of the surface subsidence trough. RÉSUMÉ: Des tassements aux dessus de massifs cristallins sont rarement observés et par le passé les géotechniciens ne prévoyait pas de subsidence significative associée avec des projets de tunnel profond. Cependant, de récentes campagnes de nivellement haute précision le long de la route du Col du Gotthard (Suisse centrale), ont mis en évidence des subsidences atteignant 12 cm sur des sections passant plusieurs centaines de mètres au-dessus du tunnel routier du Gotthard. Le mécanisme invoqué pour expliquer ce phénomène est la consolidation à grande échelle due au drainage du tunnel et aux variations de pression de pore dans le massif rocheux. Cet article présente les résultats d’une modélisation numérique intensive mettant l’accent sur les processus responsables pour la subsidence. Ces résultats obtenus grâce à des modèles 2-D discontinus (p. ex. éléments distincts) et continus (p. ex. éléments finis) montrent que la déformation sur des fractures discrètes (fermeture de fractures, cisaillement) ainsi que la consolidation poro-élastique de la roche intacte contribuent également aux magnitudes et aux géométries de subsidence observée en surface. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Beachtliche Oberflächensenkungen in einem kristallinen Gebirge, deren Ursache im Vortrieb eines mehrere hundert Meter tiefgelegenen Tunnels liegt, wurden bisher nicht erwartet und beobachtet. Dennoch wurden nach dem Bau des Gotthardstrassentunnels, entlang der Gotthardpassstrasse Oberflächensenkungen mit einem Maximalbetrag von 12 cm bei der Auswertung von Präzisions-Nivellements entdeckt. Dieser Maximalbetrag wurde in einem granitischen Gneis gemessen. Die örtliche Übereinstimmung zwischen dem maximalem Senkungsbetrag und dem maximalem Wasserzufluss zum Tunnel, und die zeitliche Abfolge von Tunnelbau und auftretenden Oberflächensenkungen lassen hydromechanisch gekoppelte Prozesse als Ursache dieser Gebirgsverformungen vermuten. In dieser Arbeit werden die Ergebnisse ausgedehnter prozessorientierter numerischer Simulationen präsentiert. Resultate aus den 2-D Diskontinuum (d.h. distinct-element) und Kontinuum (d.h. finite element) Simulationen zeigen, dass beide Verformungsmechanismen, d.h. an diskreten Brüchen und der intakten Gesteinsmatrix, gleichbedeutend für die beobachteten Senkungsbeträge und der Form des Setzungstroges verantwortlich sind.

The latest Draft MPRRB was released for public comment in October 2006. The main purpose of the Bill is to collect royalties at mines developed in terms of new-order mineral rights granted through the MPRDA process. The transition phase stipulated in the MPRDA will be completed by 1 May 2009, on which date mineral royalties will become payable to the state. The royalty rates stated in the MPRRB differ from mineral to mineral and also depend on the degree of refinement. Gold is the subject of this paper, where the royalty rate ranges from 1.5% (for refined gold) to 3% (for unrefined gold) of sales revenue. This royalty is payable regardless of profit, with a maximum 75% relief for loss-making mines. The purpose of this paper is to establish whether or not it would be necessary for gold mines to adjust their mineral reserve statements as a result of this Bill. The methodology is to add the royalty costs stipulated in the MPRRB to the actual quarterly information for the past ten years as reported by the gold-mine members of the COM. The rationale is to investigate the impact this Bill (in its current form) would have had on gold reserves that must be left unmined in the ground because of a higher pay limit. The results of the study point to a significant impact on reserves available for mining with the subsequent shortening of mine lives and retrenchment of workers. Had the MPRRB been effective for the 10 years prior to 1996, it would have resulted in 46 tonnes of gold being sterilised. Stated alternatively, 30 700 workers at COM gold mines alone would have lost their livelihoods.

Optimising the throughput of a mining network comprising all equipment from shovels to semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills is a complicated task, yet the potential benefits can be significant. Key modelling challenges stem from the sheer number of possible routes which material can travel, different equipment operating under different constraints, and the rate of SAG mills being calculated through a nonlinear function of the blended materials’ rock attributes. Nevertheless, this is an ideal onapplication area of mathematical programming, a branch of operations research. This paper describes an application of mixed integer linear programming (MILP) to optimise the mining equipment network of one of the world’s largest copper mines.The model takes as input a year-long monthly mine schedule of shovels in different pits, pushbacks, sequences and faces which produce material to be moved through a network of crushers, conveyors, silos, distributors, stockpiles and SAG mills, ultimately outputting a daily operational plan for all equipment that maximises the throughput of the network. All operational constraints and business rules are considered, including three quality attributes of copper ore. Comparing model results with actual data shows an improvement of 4.47% in network throughput tonnage. Additionally, although the model is solved using a free, open-source solver, optimal solutions are still achieved within a practical timeframe.

The melting phenomena of manganese ore, slag and alloys were studied in an experimental sessile drop furnace. Particles of approximately 20-60mg were placed on graphite substrates and then heated at a constant rate of 5°C/min up to 1830°C in a controlled gas atmosphere of Ar or CO. The shape of the particle was photographed with a digital video camera every second. It was observed that the melting behaviour can vary significantly, with some particles exhibiting a large softening/melting range. Selected samples were sectioned and then analysed with EPMA. The implications of the results on understanding industrial furnace operations are discussed.

This paper describes the tunnel seismic reflective survey, which has been developed by the authors in order to detect the geological condition ahead of the tunnel face three-dimensionally using reflected seismic waves. In addition, the applicability and the accuracy of the result of this system has been validated by comparing with the geological observation results at the tunnel face and the result of the drill logging system, which was conducted simultaneously with this survey in order to predict the rock properties using the data acquired during drilling from the tunnel face by rotary percussion drilling. In dieser Arbeit werden Reflektionsseismische Tunneluntersuchtungen beschrieben, die von den Autoren entwickelt wurde, um die geologischen Eigenschaften am Tunnelstirnende dreidimensional an Hand reflektierter seismischer Wellen bei minimaler Unterbrechung der Arbeit zu untersuchen. Darüber hinaus wurde die Anwendbarkeit und Genauigkeit der mit diesem System erhaltenen Ergebnisse durch Vergleiche mit den Ergebnissen geologischer Beobachtungen am Tunnelstirnende sowie den Ergebnissen des Bohrlogsystems bewiesen. Das letztgenannte System wurde gleichzeitig mit dem hier genannten System eingesetzt, um die Gesteinseigenschaften mit Hilfe der Daten vorherzusagen, die beim Bohren von Probelöchern im Tunnelstirnende mit einer Drehschlagbohrmaschine erhalten wurden. Cet article décrit une méthode de prospection sismique de tunnel, développée par les auteurs, pour déterminer en 3 dimensions les conditions géologiques existant derrière le front de taille, au moyen d’étude et de mesure des ondes sismiques réfléchies dans le sous sol, et ce, avec un minimum d’arrêt des travaux d’excavation. En outre, l'applicabilité et l'exactitude des résultats de ce système ont été vérifiées, en comparant les résultats des observations géologiques effectuées au front de taille, avec ceux du log de forage qui a été effectué parallèlement à ce système, en vue de prévoir les propriétés de la roche, grâce aux données collectées au cours du forage d’un trou de sonde depuis le front de taille à l’aide d’une foreuse rotative à percussion.

The Oyu Tolgoi porphyry gold and copper project is located in the south Gobi region of Mongolia. The Ivanhoe Mines project has the potential to become a long-life copper and gold producer that could rank among the largest in the world. There are five deposits which cover a strike length in excess of 6.5 km, from south to north they are named South Oyu, Southwest Oyu, Central Oyu, Hugo South and Hugo North. The first three, collectively known as the Southern Oyu deposits, are planned to be mined by open pits, whilst extraction of the deeper Hugo deposits is planned using block caving techniques. The pits will have diameters of approximately 1000m and a maximum depth of 550m. The geological environment consists of a sequence of porphyritic augite basalt, dacitic tuffs and sedimentary rocks that have been intruded by several generations of porphyritic quartz monzodiorite and numerous post mineralization dykes. Several major faults cut through the southern deposits juxtaposing the relative position of the stratigraphy. The geotechnical investigation for the Oyu Tolgoi Open Pits was conducted in three distinct phases of increasing complexity: scoping study; advanced scoping study and feasibility study. Each phase consisted of data collection, interpretation and analysis designed to progressively develop 3D geotechnical domaining for the empirical, structural and numerical evaluations. The development of the geotechnical design parameters for these green fields open pits posed many technical challenges, brought about by the conditions associated with a lithologically and structurally complex environment. The design work focused on the optimization of the pit geometry to conform to equipment selection and blasting characteristics. Limiting bench stack heights were derived from the influence of major structures. The overall slope angles in each pit sector were developed around the requirement for haulage ramps and geotechnical berms. This paper describes each of these aspects and the methodology used to address the integration of the geotechnical characteristics with the mining environment.
