Catastrophic rock slope failures have caused destructive tsunamis in Norwegian fjords. At the Åknes rock slope the tsunami generating potential is large due to the potential large volume involved in a possible catastrophic failure. Widening of the upper crack has been recorded since 1986, and in recent years, a quite extensive investigation and monitorin campaign has been conducted. Data from some of these investigations are presented and analysed with respect to a preliminary evaluation of the stability of the slope.

PNEUFLOT® technology has been applied for the past 20 years in coal, ore and other minerals processing plants. During the last two years this technology has achieved a breakthrough with some 42 units being sold signifying a rising trend. »Humboldt Wedag Coal & Minerals Technology« has performed extensive research and development work over the last five years. The results of which were used to design a new fourth generation aerator. Humboldt Wedag, through its association with EKOF, can offer a holistic solution encompassing both flotation equipment and reagents. It is the only company in the world able to offer such a package. The association with EKOF strengthens the Humboldt Wedag product offering, especially as the company in-troduced pneumatic flotation cells to the South African market in the form of the PNEUFLOT®. Before starting pilot scale test work, a mineralogical analysis has to be carried out to determine the mineral com-position as well as the liberation grade. HW-CMT works together with independent institutes. Different reagent regimes can be tested in laboratory scale. Pilot machines, each packed in a 20? container, are available to carry out extensive test work at customers? processing plants. A group of engineers from HW-CMT is involved in the pilot test work. The flexible pilot machines are designed to cater for coal, ores and other minerals. The small feed rates of 7 ? 12 m³/h only means the pilot machines do not disturb the operation of process plants. Batch tests have to be carried out to determine the numbers of PNEU-FLOT® stages. New applications in iron ore, copper ore, platinum group minerals, rock phosphate and potash were suc-cessfully tested in the last three years. In applications where the feed material is very fine, PNEUFLOT® technology is able to achieve high recoveries with particle sizes where conventional technology failed.

Sandsloot open pit is situated on the northern limb of the Bushveld Complex, 250 km north east of Johannesburg, South Africa. Sandsloot is currently the largest open pit platinum mine in the world and is one of six potential open pits in the area. The geotechnical strength properties of the Platreef have posed significant mining and processing challenges to the PPRust operation since inception in 1992. In order to optimize the whole business as opposed to isolated cost centres a mine to mill initiative was embarked upon in 1997. Initial work focused on ore characterization and an entire suite of data was collected for each rock type. This included mineralogy, geochemistry, geotechnical, blast ability indices, as well as metallurgical strength data. The second phase involved the clear definition of customer requirements, namely the optimum performance criteria for the plant and mining departments. This involved extensive field trials and data capture to measure the interaction and influence of the mine to mill value chain. Once the design targets were defined, a 3D geotechnical model was constructed to ensure that the targets were consistently achieved. The model is very similar to an ore reserve model; however, it is populated with geotechnical, metallurgical and blast index data. Through software queries the appropriate blast powder factor for each mining block can be obtained, thereby ensuring the correct fragmentation is blasted for the plant and mining operation. The initiative has delivered significant results showing improvements across the mine to mill value chain. These include increased loading rates, reduced electricity and crushing consumables, as well as higher plant throughput. Additionally, the initiative has benefited both brownfield and greenfield projects on the PPRust operation

As part of a comprehensive risk analysis which was carried out into the effectiveness of the water barrier between South Deep and Randfontein Estate mines, the potential threat posed by large seismic events was assessed. The study covered several aspects. Firstly, an estimate of the maximum credible earthquake was obtained from a probabilistic analysis of the regional seismicity of the previous 25 years. Allowance was made for ?reservoir-induced? effects by increasing the estimate of the size of the maximum credible earthquake from ML= 5.1 to ML= 5.5. Based on available knowledge of the geological structure, the possibility of such an event occurring in the vicinity of the barrier pillar was estimated. The possibility of substantial damage to the barrier rock mass, resulting as a consequence of a large event, was assessed. The likely damage to the concrete control plugs installed in five tunnels that penetrated the barrier, which might result from a ?near-miss? by the largest possible seismic event or from a ?direct hit? by a smaller event, was also considered. It was concluded that there was a negligibly small possibility that the maximum credible earthquake could occur close enough to the barrier, and in such a manner, as to cause any damage to it or to the plugs in the tunnels passing through it. The possibility of serious plug damage occurring as a result of a ?direct hit? by as maller event was slightly greater, but still sufficiently remote as to be of no practical concern at all.

The Gordonsville Operation of Pasminco US Inc. along with the Center for Advanced Mineral and Metallurgical Processing (CAMP) at Montana Tech studied, developed and implemented a pilot-scale hydrometallurgical facility for the industrial recovery of germanium and gallium. This paper describes the joint testing and engineering programme that culminated in this successful process.

Oxides of sulphur are corrosive and are produced when sulphur-containing fuels are burned. Sulphur dioxide (SO2) is a colourless gas with a characteristic, irritating, pungent odour. Exposure routes to the human body are mainly through inhalation and skin and/or eye contact. Symptoms of exposure to SO2 may include irritation of the eyes, nose, and throat; rhinorrhea (discharge of thin nasal mucous); choking; cough; and reflex bronchoconstriction. To protect employees against the ill health effects of SO2 exposure, they are often required to make use of respiratory protection whenever entering areas were the SO2 levels exceed the statutory limits. The use of respiratory protective equipment should always be a last resort and should be considered only after other control measures have failed to reduce occupational exposure levels to below the occupational exposure limit or whilst other control measures are being investigated or implemented. Whenever the use of respiratory protection equipment is considered, it should always be used as part of a comprehensive respiratory protection plan. It is also extremely important that all potentially exposed persons are adequately and comprehensively informed and trained.

"The Zambian Copper mining industry as we know it today has its genesis from early in the 20th century in the 1920s. Consistent private sector-driven investment in the industry over a period of over 50 years in exploration, mine development and operation, development of minerals processing facilities, building of infrastructure for pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processing, with attendant support facilities, including building of whole new towns, resulted in copper production going from zero to a peak of 769 000 tons of copper in 1969. At the same time, the industry created jobs to the extent that in 1972 the industry had over 62 000 direct jobs. The industry was nationalized in 1973 and remained in government hands for just over 24 years. During this period, the industry experienced a serious decline in production levels, reaching the lowest level at the dawn of the 21st century in the year 2000 when production was 250 000 tons. In terms of jobs, an average of just under 2000 jobs were lost every year in the 24-year period, reaching just over 22 000 direct jobs in 2000. Following the return of Zambian politics to pluralism and liberalized economic policies, the government decided to privatize the mining industry. The process started in 1996 and by the year 2000 all the mining assets had been privatized. The new investors embarked on serious investment to upgrade the assets and to develop greenfield mining projects. Fourteen years later and investments of over USD 12 billion, the industry production levels increased year- on-year to reach a peak of 763 000 tons in 2013 with direct jobs reaching 90 000. This paper discusses the impact of the mining industry in Zambia on the economy in areas such as employment, support to other industries, direct contribution to the national gross domestic product (GDP), foreign exchange earnings and social amenities. The paper also focuses on the performance of the mines during these periods vis-à-vis mineral availability, mineral grades and complexity, new technologies and human capital. This is looked at particularly in the light of current challenges the industry is facing and makes suggestions on how the industry can be nurtured to continue being a major driver for the Zambian economy and a major player in the international copper mining business."

Equipment selection in mining engineering is one of the most important decisions that affects the mine design, production planning and economic parameters in open pit and underground mining. Mine planning engineers generally use their intuition and experiences in decision making. Mostly, linguistic variables (the weather is raining, soil is wet, etc.) come into question and decision-makers may not know how these variables are computed. Since the advent of the fuzzy set theory, these uncertainties are easily interpreted in the decision-making process. The development of computer technology and programming of colloquial language with expert systems have considerably reduced decision-makers? burden. This paper reviews the development of a computer programme software called EQS (EQuipment Selection) that automates equipment selection in mining engineering using fuzzy set theory. The EQS with an introduction of the concepts and theories of multiple attribute decision-making, the fuzzy set theory, and EQS applications to mining industry problems with case studies are presented

In cement-based products, such as concrete and mortars, a balance between the particle sizes of the components must be kept in order to obtain the required material properties, such as workability and strength. Sometimes the aggregates lack the necessary amount of fines, hence fine particles, i.e., filler materials, have to be added. Large quantities of filler material are needed in the production of modern concrete types; one principle of self-compacting concrete (SCC) is, for instance, the use of large amounts of fillers to reduce the friction between the coarser aggregates. Use of by-products such as slag, dust or sludge from the metallurgical industries as filler materials in concrete may help to conserve natural resources and at the same time be an economically positive option. However, to be able to successfully use the available materials they must be suitable for the planned purpose, i.e., they must be compatible with cement. In this paper three different experimental studies of steel-slags will be discussed. The aim of the studies has been to investigate if it is possible to improve the steel-slags properties, by selective screening, fine wet grinding or remelting, so that the steel-slags can be used as mineral-addition/filler material in concrete. The purpose of the investigation was to assess various options for increasing the efficiency of the conveyor belt transporting system used at 4 Belt Shaft at Lonmin?s Marikana operations. The reason for the investigation was to prevent the occurrence of a ?bottleneck? at the main ore passes delivering ore to the conveyor belt system, thus creating more fluent operational conditions. The options assessed for increasing the efficiency of the conveyor belt transporting system were: ?Variation of the conveyor speed ?Concurrent tipping from two ore passes on the belt ?Increase the available drive unit power ?Increasing the feed rate from vibratory feeders ?Change in belt width/belt specifications The report shows that the most preferable option to the current situation at 4 Belt, Lonmin, would be the option of concurrent tipping from two ore passes to the belt.

Over the last few years Lonmin Platinum and Sandvik have embarked on a unique partnership of collaboration through a systematic approach to developing equipment to mechanize and automate narrow reef platinum mining. After the initial design and manufacture of the equipment the key aspect is the integrating equipment, people and method into a mining system. Another key a spec of mechanization is the optimization of equipment utilization and this philosophy has ensured continual evolvement of mining methods. This paper describes the trials and development that have resulted in the mining method described as Lonmin mechanized breast.

The basis of this paper is a compilation of work in the design and construction of copper heap leach facilities, and interviews with various heap leach operations personnel in Chile and Peru. The purpose is not to highlight specific mines and their performance, but rather to discuss geotechnical/civil features of copper heap leach facilities that function well, as well as features that do not. During the 1990s several copper heap leach facilities were brought on-line in South America. Many of these facilities have now been operational for a number of years during which time the operators have been able to monitor the performance of their heaps. This paper serves as a compilation of operators? experiences, and provides a discussion of the lessons learnt over the past decade. Several key geotechnical issues are examined, focusing upon the integrity of the ore, drainage material and pipe network, along with the success of inter-lift liners. This conference provides a timely update of the original paper (Burkhalter et al, 2002).

Most efforts to mechanize low seam (narrow reef) mining of platinum ore are presently based on board-and-pillar methods with1.6?1.8 m in reef excavation. This paper attempts to substantiate the benefits of low profile mining: primarily improved head grade with resulting reduced tailings losses. Board-and-pillar equipment supplied by DBT, facilitating1.1?1.2m mining height has been in operation in an Anglo Platinum mine since September 2001. Major aspects of the equipment, battery scoops (LHDs) and rotary bolting rigs, are described and presently achieved results reported. The medium term industry goal is rock breaking without the use of explosives. An outline of present DBT developments is presented.

There is an increasing awareness of the importance of including an assessment of environmental liabilities in the preparation of bankable feasibility documents. This means that environmental assessments of proposed, existing and decommissioned mine sites have to be undertaken for the purposes of quantifying environmental liabilities and assessing potential risks. This paper examines the need for considering environmental liabilities before describing the approach adopted in undertaking due diligence studies for the preparation of bankable feasibility documents and some of the difficulties experienced. Finally, some concluding remarks are made and the implications for the mining industry are discussed.

Six different types of quartz and quartzites used as raw materials by ferroalloy plants have been investigated with respect to their thermo mechanical properties. In order to investigate the effect of the thermal shock caused by the rapid heating of quartz when it enters the furnace, the following techniques have been used for both in situ investigations and investigations of pre-heated quartz: -Heating stage microscopy for in situ observation of heating effects. -Shock heating of quartz in an induction furnace An optical microscope-mounted heating stage was used for in situ observations of the microscopic effects of heating up to 1300 ºC. The effects of heating were observed at different temperature intervals in different samples. The main temperature intervals were below 573 ºC and above 1000 ºC. The cause of the observed effects is interpreted as fluid inclusion decrepitation for T<573 °C and structural implications (micro cracks, grain boundaries and remaining fluid inclusions) at T>1200 °C. Shock heating of the samples was carried out in an induction furnace to 1300 ºC for ten minutes. The effects of the heating were studied with different techniques such as direct observation during and directly after heating, optical microscopy and XRD. Combined transmitted and fluorescence light microscopy shows that the heated quartz show an opening of the grain boundaries and evenly distributed micro cracks that were not present in the unheated reference samples. In some of the heated samples, weak generation of cristobalite was detected by XRD.

Composite rock mass failures involve intact rock material as well as fracture and shear on existing defects. Experiences from open-cut coalmining in the Bowen Basin of central Queensland are that failures of this nature occur suddenly with little warning, and are much more common than classical structurally controlled failures. Geological conditions and mining practices in the Bowen Basin are described. The circumstances of a sample of composite failures are described in detail in the paper. From this experience it appears that several aspects of conventional geotechnical investigation and design practice have not contributed significantly to either predicting or controlling the risks associated with sudden failures. These practices are described as myths for reasons outlined in the paper. On the other hand, the reality seems to be that high initial stresses and stress changes caused by excavation lead by a process of extensional deformation to a critical stress condition within the rock mass, and that sudden collapse follows when that critical stress condition can no longer be sustained. It is concluded that learnings gained from underground excavations in rock may be more applicable to open pit excavations than previously thought, and that the processes of prefailure deformation require more careful study if we are to develop more reliable risk management controls.

Mining companies sponsor a range of non-core, corporate social responsibility projects to adhere to social and labour plans and environmental management prerequisites that form part of a mining licence application. Some companies go above and beyond such projects, sponsoring initiatives that generate renewable energy through solar power, wind energy, natural gas, etc. The challenge for these companies is to choose between a variety of projects to ensure maximum value, especially in times when the economic climate might be less favourable for such projects. The focus of this research was to analyse the concept of sustainability as it exists today, and to apply that to the triple bottom line accounting method in an attempt to quantify the sustainability of a project. Research was done on the methane burn-off project at Sibanye Gold?s Beatrix Mine to establish how such projects are planned and financed, and what impact they have on the triple bottom line of a company. The financial bottom line is, by definition, one that executives understand. This paper also proposes a quantitative method for defining the social and environmental bottom lines as well. By considering the financial, social, and environmental values, the study attempts to determine a monetary value for a sustainable renewable energy project. This monetary value can be compared to similar values obtained for other sustainable renewable energy projects under consideration. The research suggests that monetary value alone is not enough to base a sustainable decision on, and qualitative measures are suggested for use in conjunction with quantitative methods. The selection method proposed should assist the board of a mining company to choose the most sustainable option and the project that will add the greatest value to the company across all three bottom lines. It will also provide increased justification for such renewable energy projects, even in periods of harsh or uncertain economic climates.

Since the commissioning of the Tati Hydrometallurgical Demonstration Plant (HDP), which produces Ni and Cu cathodes as well as Co salt from sulphide concentrate employing Activox® technology for leaching, no kinetic data has been generated from the plant under normal operating conditions, from start-up to steady state. Therefore, this study seeks to determine the rate of reactions in the leaching circuit with a view to obtaining kinetic data for the system under the current operating conditions. Within the five-compartment autoclave operating at temperatures of 105°C to 110°C and 1100 kPa pressure, the extraction of Ni, Cu, and Co ions into solution is achieved through the oxidation of the sulphide concentrate using approximately 50 kg H2SO4 per ton, 10 kg NaCl per ton, and 1.21 kg O2 per kilogram of S2-. The autoclave reactions showed complex kinetics, with the reactions proceeding via some intermediate(s) before the formation of products. The results suggest that the reactions were dependent on the size of the metal ion of interest and the concentrations of the metal ions in the Tati concentrate as well as in chloride leaching. The order of the leaching rate constants was Fe2+ > Cu2+ > Ni2+ > Co2+ in all the compartments studied. The rates of leaching were also found to decrease as the concentrate moves from compartment 1 to compartment 4. For compartments 1 to 3, leaching was observed to be preceded by dilution of the repulp liquor (copper raffinate). The leaching rate for compartment 5 was slightly lower than that of compartment 1 but higher than the rates of compartments 2, 3, and 4 for all the metals studied. Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of BSc Engineering (Mining) The aim of this project is to determine whether certain pillars occurring within the no. 1 shaft and no. 2 sub-shaft ground are feasible for extraction. The extraction of these pillars is essential in prolonging the life of Kloof Main Shaft as its VCR resource becomes depleted. Extraction of these pillars will require a combination of designs and factors, with rock mechanics and ventilation being the main considerations. Primarily for the pillar extraction, an initial production target of150 kg gold, mine able in one year from commencement of ?opening up? was set. The planned target has been exceeded and the feasible pillars identified are expected to yield an additional 1 390 kg of gold to the shaft?s production profile. However, not all the required ventilation designs have been completed to date, the reason being that at the time of the project, many of the pillar areas were inaccessible and thus ventilation conditions are unknown. This project is therefore an ongoing process and will require further design once all targeted pillar areas have been opened up. A preliminary costing analysis of the pillar mining was performed and it was found that all targeted pillars with the exception of 38?61 pillar are profitable.
