Copper electrowinning models are useful for prediction of process performance, optimisation and improved understanding of complex phenomena such as current distribution without the expense of physical experiments. Recently, finite element models such as those generated in COMSOL Multiphysics have been developed for the electrowinning process. The predictive capacity of these models is improved by incorporating physical and chemical phenomena. Since physicochemical properties of electrolytes can have a significant effect on the quality of copper produced, this work was conducted to investigate the effect of such properties on electrodeposition at varying levels of copper, sulphuric acid concentration, iron concentration and temperature, in the presence of a smoothing agent. Tests were conducted at conditions similar to those for industrial copper electrowinning. Mathematical correlations were developed for the following properties; density, conductivity and diffusivity which were compared to existing models in literature and thereafter applied in a COMSOL generated model. The model predicts, current distribution at the cathode surface, deposit thickness (morphology), concentration of species within the cell and current efficiency. Current distribution output shows the impact of several phenomena on the deposit generated including the relationship between increasing copper concentration and current density and lack of influence of acid concentration on this property. South Africa is reliant on coal for the generation of almost all the electricity used in the country, and several large industrial concerns such as Sasol are also coal based. Research relating to the mining, beneficiation and utilization of coal is important in order to ensure the optimal exploitation and use of coal within the country. The Fuel Research Institute (FRI) of South Africa was established in 1930 to investigate all aspects of coal beneficiation and utilization in South Africa. The FRI went on to conduct world-class research and in 1957 a pilot coal preparation plant was constructed in Pretoria to enable large-scale practical experimentation. The pilot plant played a pivotal role in the establishment of South Africa?s low ash coal export project. Political and economic factors contributed to the eventual closure of the FRI and South Africa experienced a period of about 10 years between 1990 and 1999 during which very little public coal preparation research was done. This changed for the better towards the end of 1999 when Coaltech 2020, a collaborative research program was established. Participants included the CSIR, universities, the government and the major coal producers. Coal preparation research conducted under Coaltech thus far include dewatering and drying of fine coal, size classification of ultra-fine coal and dense-medium fine coal beneficiation. Currently, the Coaltech focus is on the beneficiation of low-grade coal reserves and is investigating existing as well as new techniques that can be utilized to provide cost-effective beneficiation of low-grade raw coals and reject coals.

South African underground hard rock mines are typically managed using measurements made daily, weekly or even monthly of key parameters such as face advance, readiness to blast, blast success, temperature or dust levels. Safety and health can be greatly improved if a real-time measurement system can inform decision making. To enable this vision of widespread sensing, communication and decision support, CSIR has developed an open standard architecture for communication of sensor data, and a reference implementation using that standard. The standard is called AziSA, which means ?to inform? in isiZulu. AziSA provides an architecture that allows for connection of any type of sensor and that is particularly suited to wireless sensing. On the safety side, the CSIR is developing a suite of sensors specifically around the risk of rockfalls. Sensors such as an electronic replacement for the barring tool, or a thermal sensor that can detect loose rock, can already be used to identify potential hazards in the hangingwall. When these sensors are combined with location and time information in a single database, it becomes possible to build maps of risk and to extrapolate risk into unmined areas. It is also easy to confirm that routine safety procedures like barring are actually taking place. In the future, it is proposed that entry inspections will be made using remote techniques that will not place an individual miner at risk. While miners will still be required to bar or place support, they will do so with a clear idea of which portions of the hangingwall are safe, and which present risk. On the health side, if a network such as AziSA is deployed in the stope, it becomes much easier to monitor the condition of individual miners. The work strain experienced by miners can be monitored through heart-rate sensors, and their core body temperature can be monitored using various novel techniques discussed in the paper. Additional sensors can be added to quantify worker exposure to hazards such as noise or dust. Individual sensors allow for people who are at an unacceptably high risk of developing heat disorders to be treated timeously, and they also allow for team management based on objective measures. Over a longer period, position sensing and environment monitors, or personal dosimetry, provide a powerful management tool to prevent workers from being overexposed to hazards, and to confirm that management instructions are being followed. Cost-effective sensing in the stope is a major challenge, but one that can be overcome through technology like that used in AziSA. Sensing provides opportunities both to make immediate interventions when workers are exposed to unacceptable risk, and to manage the long-term exposure of workers to hazard.

As part of a broad program to optimise the performance of their grinding circuit, BHP Billiton Cannington have installed an OCS© Expert system together with three VisioRockTM online particle size analysis cameras. The main purpose of the system is to stabilise grind size and feed to the flotation circuit. This particular application of OCS© is the first installation to incorporate Metso Minerals Process Technology-Asia Pacific's (MMPT AP) Dynamic SAG/AG Mill Model, which is able to predict numerous mill parameters that were previously unable to be measured with the existing plant instrumentation. Integrated into the logic of the control algorithm are online vision based, particle size measurements of the AG mill feed and recycle crusher product. This paper will describe the history of the project from initiation to date, the model and OCS© logic configuration, and demonstrate the significant benefits realised at Cannington mine.

Limestone formations in the United States can be subject to relatively high horizontal stresses due to the existence of tectonic loading of the limestone strata. Underground limestone mines use the room-and-pillar method, in which 12- to 18-m-wide rooms are typically excavated. The stability of these excavations can be compromised by the horizontal stress, resulting in a rockfall hazard. Rockfalls are the cause of 15% of all reportable injuries in underground limestone mines. Horizontal stress related damage can occur in the form of guttering along one or more sides of an excavation, roof beam buckling or oval shaped roof falls, with the long axis perpendicular to the major horizontal stress. Numerical analyses show that the pillar layout and orientation of the mine workings have an effect on the horizontal stress distribution within the roof. The effects of high horizontal stresses can be mitigated by orientating the heading development direction parallel to the maximum horizontal stress, reducing the number of cross-cuts and offsetting the cross-cuts to limit the potential lateral extent of horizontal stress related roof falls. The modeling approach described in this paper can be used as a tool to evaluate potential roof failure and optimize the stability of room and pillar layouts.

The Constitution of the Republic of South Africa advocates the importance of sustainable economic development and justifiable environmental consciousness by business. The government needs to ensure that every citizen of the Republic has access to an environment that is protected, pollution free, and sustainable by enacting certain regulations. However, there are more than 5 700 derelict and unrehabilitated mines of all types in South Africa. Former asbestos operations were among the first to be targeted for clean-up under the programme instituted by the Department of Mineral Resources (DMR), owing to the proven direct impact of asbestos pollution on health. This paper seeks to investigate the challenges faced by the coal sector as far as mine rehabilitation and closure is concerned. For the purpose of this paper rehabilitation is defined as per the Chamber of Mines Rehabilitation Guidelines publication, which defines rehabilitation as putting the land impacted by mining activities back to a sustainable and usable condition. Some of the current rehabilitation challenges are technical skills (know-how), leadership focus, poor planning, cost saving initiatives, and the government's lack of capacity to enforcement rehabilitation requirements. It is imperative that mining companies identify rehabilitation as a critical strategic pillar that directly influences license to operate. The case study evidence indicates that relevant policies, appointment of accountable people, sufficient leadership support, and the correct choice of rehabilitation equipment can assist to improve the rehabilitation and land management challenge.

Vanadium-based sulphuric acid catalyst has been utilized to oxidize SO2 to SO3 since the early 1900s. This versatile product displaced the expensive and easily poisoned platinum-based catalyst in nearly all applications by the 1930s. MECS has been manufacturing the vanadium-based catalyst since 1925 and today is the leading supplier in the world of sulphuric acid catalysts in a variety of forms. Currently, MECS has worldwide customer/technical support for the catalyst as well as a dedicated catalyst manufacturing plant in Martinez, California. MECS also has a strong technical and research and development programme dedicated to creating new and improved products and services. This paper will describe some of the technical details of vanadium-based sulphuric acid catalysts as well as offering a unique look into how caesium-promoted MECS catalysts can be used in single and double absorption acid plants, and off-gas plants running on irregular gas feeds, to reduce emissions and preheater run times. An update on MECS technical services extended for use in characterizing converter performance is also presented.

In the copper electrorefining process, the dissolution of anodes is significantly reduced or even stopped when the passivation phenomenon occurs. The results of this phenomenon are increasing energy consumption, residual formatting, and voltage levels in the cell. In this study, the electrochemical behaviour of blister copper in the presence of sodium persulfate (PDS) was studied. The electrochemical methods of LPR, Tafel, and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) were used. The results showed that the addition of sodium persulfate activates the electrode surface and increases the open circuit potential. In the presence of PDS, the polarisation resistance of the electrode shows an increasing or decreasing tendency, based on the PDS concentration. This tendency is probably due to the formation of surface layers (such as slime layer or copper sulfate) and dissolution of this layer at various concentrations of PDS. The lowest polarisation resistance of 1.8 ohms and the highest corrosion current of 60.6×10-3 and 36.6×10-3 A/cm2 from LPR and Tafel techniques respectively were obtained at the concentration of 40 g/l PDS. Based on the results of potentiodynamic and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy tests, the addition of sodium persulfate to the solution reduces the corrosion resistance, therefore the passivation time of the blister copper anode increases. Tailings produced from the iron ore industry present many challenges due to the high economic and environmental impacts involved with their disposal. However, the relative scarcity of high-grade iron ores has driven manufacturers to recover and recycle these valuable tailings (secondary sources). This study aimed at the purification of ultrafine tailings with high sulphur content from an iron ore concentrator via reverse flotation to produce pellet feed fines. A specially designed flotation column featured with a nano bubble generator and a conventional bubble generator were employed to assess the effects of nano bubbles on the desulfurisation performance of iron ore concentrate under different operating conditions. Results obtained from this study indicated that the sulphur content of iron concentrate could be reduced from 1.2% to 0.22% in the presence of nano bubbles. Also, the results showed that use of nano-micro bubbles increased sulphur recovery 20% more, in comparison to micro bubbles. South Africa is running out of fresh water and is looking at ways to improve water usage. This report addresses how a diamond mine in Gauteng has improved the utilization of its water resources. In the past, water from the local river was deemed the most suitable to use in the grease recovery plant but subsequent tests on the water from the slimes dam have shows that this water source is in fact more suitable for diamond recovery. Utilizing the slimes dam water provides a more stable water source than the local river while also reducing the impact of the mine on the water resources in the area.

The management of risks associated with slope instability is an essential process in the safe and economic operation of open cut mines. The ?slope stability radar? (SSR) has been developed to better manage those risks. The SSR remotely scans rock slopes to continuously measure any surface movement and can be used to detect and alert users of wall movements with sub-millimetre precision. The high level of movement precision and broad area coverage of the rock face can allow for a better understanding of the geomechanics of slope deformation, including magnitude of potential failures and additional warning time of impending instability. Additionally, radar waves adequately penetrate through rain, dust and smoke to give reliable measurements, 24 hours a day. SSR systems have been deployed in many mines in Australia, Indonesia, South Africa, Zambia, Chile and the United States. Greater than 70 rock falls and waste dump failures (from several to millions of tonnes) have been monitored, and on every occasion precursor ?warning? movements were recorded by the SSR. This technology enables a radical change in the management of risks in open cut mining. This paper will present recent case studies of the SSR operation in coal and metalliferous mines.

Thirty-one years ago, African leaders met in Lagos for the drafting of the Lagos Plan of Action for the Economic Development of Africa, 1980?2000. The main objective of the plan was to increase Africa?s self-sufficiency and in this regard, the plan had a section pertaining specifically to redressing the ills of an unproductive mining and minerals industry and harnessing its potential for socio-economic development. However, if we look at the nature of this sector on the continent today, its characteristics resemble the diagnosis of the sector given in the plan back in 1980: lack of information on endowments of minerals; lack of value added in the sector; low development and use of those endowments that are not of interest to transnational corporations (TNCs); and most importantly, low contribution to socio-economic development. The primary consequence of the lack of visible benefits to African states, despite growth and development of the sector in terms of increased mining activity led by Foreign Direct Investment is that countries with mining industries are characterized by dysfunctional internal processes. Improvements in governance, monitored with indices such as those set out in the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, the Millennium Development Goals, and other such ?good governance? agendas, are being asserted. However, before we prescribe the introduction of initiatives or guidelines based upon highly subjective norms which we believe to fit this diagnosis, it is necessary to review how it is that we got to this situation that we are in today. How is it that, 31 years after the Lagos Plan of Action, we have not seen any major changes in the role the industry can play in socio-economic development, despite the vast increase in mining activity on the continent?

An analytical framework is formulated to assist mining companies in assessing the relative merits of mineral exploration and acquisition strategies. The anticipated costs, risks, and returns of each strategy are conceptualised using decision trees. Economic criteria - expected net present value, expected return per unit of investment, and the probability of success - for each strategy are derived(from the appropriate decision tree network. Application of the analytical framework is illustrated using the example of a medium-size company in the Canadian base metal sector.

The Samarco pipeline, the longest in the world for iron ore slurry transportation, started operation in 1977 to transport concentrate from the Germano facilities, in the state of Minas Gerais, to the pelletizing plant, located 396 km away, in the state of Espirito Santo, on the south-east coast of Brazil. Designed for a nominal capacity of 12 million tons per year, the pipeline reached 15.5 million/year due to operational improvement and, in late 2005, it was resized to transport 16.5 million tons per year, with the installation of a booster station. In order to ensure the accurate performance of the system, a pipeline cleaning programme was carried out and, since it has been29 years from the operation start-up, precise knowledge of the pipe condition would be fundamental to guarantee the success of the project. The cleaning programme demonstrated the potential of operational gains from this initiative, and its effect on the corrosion control and future measures, which should be permanently adopted to maintain the improved capacity. The intelligent pig runs provided essential data used to establish a pipeline integrity programme that allowed Samarco to develop a pipe repair plan based on the severity and significance of the features and to implement a future pipe replacement plan.

The term geostatistics was introduced by Matheron (1960) to cover the development and application of mathematical and statistical models which take specific account of the spatial structure of a 'regionalised' variable. In ore valuation the relative positions of available ore values within an ore body or portion thereof, can only be ignored in the unlikely case where there is no significant pattern of association or correlation between them - that is, if they do not disclose any significant spatial structure. A structure might not be evident in the available data, e.g. where the spacing of the available values is relatively wide such as in surface drilling on a new deep gold mine. However, practical selective mining considerations could dictate the need for eventual underground valuation on a scale much smaller than that represented by this spacing and the possibility of a significant structure on such a smaller scale cannot then be ignored. Some spatial structure must be present wherever the average variability among the values of check ore samples from the same, adjacent or nearby grooves or of borehole cores from the deflections in the same borehole, is lower than the overall variability for ore values within the whole ore body. Another practical check on the presence of a spatial structure is where it is evident that there is or will be a significant variation in the ore grades for individual ore blocks. Any correlation between peripheral and follow-up internal ore block values also provides evidence of a spatial structure, and hence the regression techniques covered in §1.16-1.2 1 can be accepted as the first application of the geostatistical procedures. The spatial structure of a regionalised variable can be studied and measured by the pattern, usually a decreasing function, in the level of correlation or of the covariance between pairs of values as the distance or lag between the values increases, that is, by the correlogram or covariogram (Krige, 1968, 1969, 1976; and Fig. 18). In geostatistics, for various practical and theoretical reasons (Matheron, 1960, 1971), the measure most commonly used is the semivario- gram, which increases as the lag increases. The semivariogram and covariance values are interrelated and for the lognormal- de Wijsian pattern used extensively for gold ore valuation both measures as well as their relationship can be defined on a fairly straightforward basis. Provided the underlying as- sumptions are realistic, the choice of measure - correlogram, covariogram or semivariogram - will be dictated mainly by convenience. Paragraph 2.2 will cover some general geostatistical terms and $2.3-2.12 will deal mainly with the theoretical side of the lognormal-de Wijsian model for spatial structures. Wherever the relevant variable lends itself to normalisation via the 3-parameter lognormal distribution (see 51.9) the de Wijsian semivariogram model is also likely to be suitable and will provide substantial advantages in application. Various practical applications will be covered in Section 3. Although confined to the lognormal-de Wijsian model, much of the theory covered and the general approach is applicable to all spatial structures. [ ]

The utilization of software is now inherent to virtually every activity along the mining value chain. However, apart from the software survey done by Gibbs in the 1990s and work on the extent of diffusion of information and communication technology (ICT) in the South African platinum sector by Mugodi and Fleming in 2003, the nature and extent of software utilization in the South African mining industry has never been evaluated. The Mine Planning, Optimisation and Valuation (MPOV) Research Group in the School of Mining Engineering, University of Witwatersrand, therefore initiated a project to collate and analyse the current utilization of software in the South African mining industry. This was done through the development of a web-based database of the relevant software. Snowball sampling was used to collect the data because the South African mining industry is diverse and software utilization is fragmented across and within the sectors of the industry. The data was then organized into distinct categories so that the information from a variety of sources could be evaluated on the same basis. A beta version of the database can be accessed online through a user-friendly front-end platform at http://db.mining.wits.ac.za. The database is expected to help at least 13 educational institutions with decisions on facilities and training that are vital to the education of mining and mining-related professionals. Exploration, mining, and consulting companies will also benefit from information in the database relating to availability and useful combinations of software solutions. The database is also strategic to software providers by providing a better understanding of their respective relative market share along the mining value chain. An analysis of the data collated in this research shows that about 77% of the software users are mining companies, 17% are consulting companies, 3% are mineral exploration companies, and the rest are software providers and educational institutions. The software used in the South African mining industry is largely provided by Gemcom Software International, MineRP Solutions, and MRM Mining Services. CAE Mining, who in 2010 acquired the Datamine Group providing Datamine software, is also widely acknowledged as a major software supplier in South Africa, but data from them had not been obtained at the time of producing the beta version of the database due to proprietary constraints. Technology is advancing at a rate that makes it extremely difficult for the mining industry to keep pace. Many advances occur within a given piece of technology and often this is missed by the disciplines that could have gained advantage by its implementation. Often this may have been simply an aspect of cost exceeding benefit. However, there are some technologies that potentially have such a far-reaching impact on the mining industry that the benefits simply outweigh the cost. The application of 3D laser scanning in the mining industry has the potential of taking the concept of 'Google maps?' underground. This presents an opportunity where the virtual world of underground can be traversed with relative ease and many aspects of measurements could be obtained without having to visit the working place again, potentially saving countless man-hours and still delivering precision work with significant savings in downtime, stoppages, and exposure to safety incidents. Anglo American Platinum maintains its competitive advantage though the review and application of appropriate technology. This paper describes the 3D laser scanning trial at one of Anglo American Platinum's new shafts, and goes on to show the benefits encountered through the application and the involvement of the various MRM disciplines.

Until 2000, pricing involved profit taking and cost covering combined with limited global published information. Market information was mostly subjective in nature and large resource companies benefited exclusively from aggregated company information and data. The market constituted producers and consumers only. The nineties saw massive cost cutting drives and re-engineering initiatives and this underwrote the structural changes evident in the late 1990s? economy. This supported South African producers on the international FOB cash cost curve, and ensured profitable coal mining operations. As the debate on relative scarcity of fossil fuels ensued, producers and buyers looked to the developing terminal coal market for direction. The much needed direction was provided when the API coal indices were developed and derivative trading was embraced to include financial institutions, trading houses and hedge funds. The liquidity of coal trades increased rapidly and vastly and market information became obtainable on a daily basis. Interpretation of current and future coal prices became available to all market players and contributed to the sophistication of the market that is now able to participate in risk management of prices, capital expenditure and brownfield developments.
