The kinetics of the non-oxidative dissolution in acids ofthe iron sulphides FeS, Fe-FeS, and Fe9S10 were studied by the use of rotating-disc electrodes of the various compounds. It was found that the rates of dissolution vary by orders of magnitude with changes in surface potential. The dissolution rates depend on non-integral orders of hydrogen-ion concentration, which in turn vary with potential. A mechanism based on the following premises is proposed to explain the kinetics of dissolution of the iron sulphides. (I) Only an FeS compound that is exactly stoichiometric dissolves in accordance with the accepted theory of ionic charge transfer. (2) Any non-stoichiometric iron-deficient iron sulphides must be reduced to exactly stoichiometric FeS before spontaneous non-oxidative dissolution can occur. The dissolution of Fe.S1o and slightly iron-deficient FeS compounds under open-circuit conditions occurs only when an oxidation reaction (usually the oxidation of hydrogen sulphide to elemental sulphur) can provide the electrons necessary for the production of exactly stoichiometric FeS. The establishment of such a mixed-potential system is the reason for the induction period that occurs during the dissolution of pyrrhotites in acids.

The authors and Iscor's management are to be congratulated on an interesting and detailed paper that discloses Iscor's philosophy, strategy, and action concerning what can also be termed productivity improvement. Aside from the pioneering work of Beeforth and Dicks regarding Dynamic Profitability Analysis at Vaal Reefs, there appears to be a shortage of papers on this topic from the mining groups.

In this paper, the authors performed experiments in the Denver and Leeds laboratory flotation devices at the University of Pretoria at various particle sizes to evaluate the performance of the devices. Quartz was used in a single mineral system at discrete sizes fractions, -25 μm, +25- 45 μm, +45-75 μm, and +75-106 μm. Hydrodynamic analysis, based on dimensionless power and Reynolds numbers, indicated that the Leeds cell required higher power input to achieve comparable flow conditions. Specifically, the Leeds cell exhibited an average power number of 1.03, whereas the Denver cell averaged 0.77 within the same impeller speed range of 1000 rpm–1500 rpm. For comparative flotation performance, impeller speeds were calibrated, resulting in operating speeds of 1200 rpm for the Denver cell and 1400 rpm for the Leeds cell. The cells performed similarly at two coarser-sized fractions. However, some deviations were observed in the finer particle size range. The -25 μm (fine) fraction initially achieved a recovery of only 15%. An additional reagent dosage was required to enhance the recovery of this fraction significantly. These findings highlighted the influence of particle size on flotation recovery. For all experiments, the Denver laboratory flotation cell outperformed (defined by higher recovery) the Leeds device, while still operating at a lower impeller speed. This advantage can be attributed to its impeller-stator design and air dispersion features, effectively overcoming slurry resistance and resulting in superior flotation performance compared to the Leeds cell.

"Engineering studies by Selection Trust, Limited, initially in connection with the development of a copper and nickel deposit for Bamangwato Concessions, Limited, and subsequently for several other clients, have required a large number of metallurgical design calculations. The flash smelting process, developed by Outokumpu Oy in Finland, has been selected as the most suitable method for these projects and the computer programs described in this paper have been developed to facilitate the computation.The data required by the programs arc the chemical and mineralogical analyses of the concentrate, gangue and flux materials and the specification of possible fuels. The required grade of furnace matte is set as the main design parameter and the programs calculate detailed heat and material balances for the smelting process."

The locations of potential reserves of chromite ores throughout the world are discussed. Reference is made to the marked changes in international trade in chromite ores during the past ten to fifteen years, and to the change in locality of the production of ferochromium aloys, which is curently largely carried out in the country of origin of the ores. The influence of these changes has been very profound in South Africa, which has the largest smelting capacity and the largest production of ferochromium aloys in the world. A proportion of South African ore is stil exported to meet the demands for the production of chromium chemicals and refractories, including a large tonnage of foundry sands. Ferochromium smelters in South Africa have a capacity of virtualy 1 Mt of aloy per annum. Nearly al this development has taken place since the introduction of the argon-oxygen decarburization (A.O.D.) process for the smelting of stainless steels. Formerly, expensive Iow-carbon ferochromium aloys were required as raw materials, but the AO.D. process, which is being used world wide, permits the use of high-carbon ferrochromium, the main product of the smelters in this country. The production in South Africa of chromium-containing corrosion- and heat-resistant steels is stil on a relatively smal scale, but serious atention is being paid to the exploitation of low-carbon weldable feritic chromium steel.

One highly relevant challenge in flotation is the recovery of fine particles. Due to their low inertia, these particles are mostly pushed aside by rising bubbles. Consequently, they typically exhibit low probability for bubble-particle collision and thus, a poor recovery rate. In this work, the trajectories of fine particles in the vicinity of rising bubbles were investigated. The measurements considered a chain of millimetric bubbles in a rectangular container filled with deionized water. The flow field near the bubbles was measured by tomographic particle image velocimetry (TPIV), employing fluorescent tracer particles of 33μm diameter. Subsequently, trajectories of larger particles and bubble-particle collision events are recorded with 4D particle tracking velocimetry using a high temporal and spatial resolution. The results reproduce the well-known collision of particles on the leading edge of a rising bubble. Additionally, collisions on the tailing edge were observed in cases with a low Stokes number. The TPIV results demonstrate, that the high turbulent kinetic energy in the bubble wake allows particles to divert from the fluid streamlines and collide with the tailing edge of the bubble. The tailing edge collision probability increases with the bubble Reynolds number and decreased particle inertia. Overall, the investigation shows that the collision of fine particles in the bubble wake should be considered for the development of further collision probability models. Furthermore, the importance of turbulence on the fine particle flotation was demonstrated. The paper discusses the reasons for the introduction of load-haul-dump (LHD) units into Greenside Colliery, and the circumstances leading to the replacement of conventional mechanized equipment on a trial basis in the mining operations on No. 2, 4, and 5 seams. An outline is given of the factors governing the selection and introduction of these units into coal mining, and the associated mining and engineering aspects involved in the optimization of their use. Operating statistics comparing the performance of conventional and LHD equipment are included.

In March 1984, two years' work by senior metallurgical personnel from the six major mining groups culminated in the formation of the Mine Metallurgical Managers' Association of South Africa. This Association has joined a group of specialist Associations operating within the South African mining industry whose aims are to uphold the standards and promote the interests of their various professions.

The School on the Accounting for Gold, which was organized under the auspices of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy by Dr Hugh E. Bartlet, Consulting Metallurgist of Johannesburg Consolidated Investment Company Limited, was held at the South African Nature Conservation Centre at Delta Park, Johannesburg, on 15th to 17th May, 1989. It was attended by 178 delegates, including 2 from the OK and 4 from Zimbabwe. A total of 19 papers were presented covering the components of gold-accounting procedure, sampling techniques, and new sampling technology.

The South African coal-mining industry uses a uniform safety-factor formula for non-squat pillars, incorporating a coal-strength constant that was derived empirically by Salamon and Munro in the 1960s. The constant is 7,2 MPa. Since that time, collapses of pillars at relatively high safety factors have occurred in the Vaal Basin. Analysis of the post-1960s' collapses indicated that the strength constant for the Vaal Basin is 4,5 MPa. A crude method for the prediction of the minimum life span of pillars in the Vaal Basin is presented.
