Mill relining is a major contributor to overall plant downtime. Reducing the number of mill liner pieces removed from and replaced in the mill has a direct impact on the overall reline time and in turn, mill availability. To improve the mill availability of Ridgeway Operations' 32 foot SAG mill, a number of initiatives were implemented in terms of liner design. These included the conversion of the shell from 40 to 30 rows, reducing the number of pieces from 80 to 60 each shell reline and reducing the number of pieces from 48 to 32 per feed end reline. In addition, modifications were made to the discharge end of the mill to extend the life of the outer pulp lifter and discharge cone, thereby reducing the frequency of change out. The standard radial outer pulp lifter was converted to an angled design. The discharge cone was converted to the BullnoseTM design supplied by Bradken. This paper discusses the design changes made and the expected benefits to the Ridgeway Operations in terms of mill availability improvements.

The Faculty of Engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand and the Mining Technology Division of the CSIR have co-operated to define the problems associated with deep level mining and in this paper they will identify what they consider to be the critical areas requiring technological solutions. This perspective will then be applied to work currently being carried out by both the organizations and gaps for additional developments will be identified. Finally the Co-operative Research Centre methodology operating in Australia is described. The purpose of this CRC is to provide a vehicle for R&D co-operation to develop and implement technologies which will increase the competitiveness of the mining industry. A further objective is to develop an appropriately skilled human resource base.

The experiment with backfill at Harmony was mainly an attempt to improve the ground conditions in a particularly tricky section of the mine. A deslimed tailings system was selected for financial reasons, ease of installation, ease of operation and its low level of mechanization. The design of the system has three aspects: firstly, to define the parameters of the backfill material itself; secondly, to design a reliable plant which could consistently produce the desired material in sufficient quantities; and, thirdly, to design a fill distribution system for maximum reliability in the shaft, minimum pipe line velocity, pressure and cost in the horizontal sections and consistency and reliability at the delivery end. The system was successfully constructed and commissioned in a short space of time at a relatively low cost. It has now reached its full potential, and very encouraging results have been achieved with regard to cost savings, ground conditions, ventilation and accident statistics.

In this investigation, the effects of different coal chemical properties were studied to estimate the coal Hardgrove Grindability Index (HGI) values index. An artificial neural network (ANN) method for 300 data-sets was used for evaluating the HGI values. Ten input parameters were used, and the outputs of the models were compared in order to select the best model for this study. A threelayer ANN was found to be optimum with architecture of five neurons in each of the first and second hidden layers, and one neuron in the output layer. The correlation coefficients (R2) for the training and test data were 0.962 and 0.82 respectively. Sensitivity analysis showed that volatile material, carbon, hydrogen, Btu, nitrogen, and fixed carbon (all on a dry basis) have the greatest effect on HGI, and moisture, oxygen (dry), ash (dry), and total sulphur (dry) the least effect. Tuzla Coal Basin in Bosnia and Herzegovina is the largest coal area in the State. Regional mining industry sensed the need for mining machinery database development in order to achieve easier planning purposes and equipment selection for open cast mines in Tuzla Coal Basin. Several databases for mining machinery used on the bituminous deposits, i.e. on brown coal and lignite mines, were developed at the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Civil Engineering, Tuzla. System Development Method was used as the approach to the database development, generating relational structure of database. First database was established for trucks and was presented as simple table, drawn and filled on the paper sheet. In the next phase, data were stored in spreadsheet type software (Quattro Pro and Excel). Lately developed database is Bucket Wheel Excavator database designed in MS Access. Two concepts, spreadsheet and Access, were integrated into one large database, enabling manipulation of hundreds of data at one place. Required adaptations of existing database in MS Access, enables Access to be used as an integration resource. Database is designed to reserve free memory for input data for mining equipment not considered so far, such as spreaders, crushers, belt conveyors, tripper cars, etc. New, integrated database, at this stage, can be imported to any type of commercial or individual software where needed. The Zinifex Century Mine employs a large number of Detritor mills for fine and ultra-fine grinding to liberate silica and sphalerite at 80 per cent passing 7.5 microns before final zinc flotation. A joint project between CSIRO Minerals and the Zinifex Century Mine was carried out to evaluate the Detritor mill performance. Plant surveys were conducted around the Detritors in conjunction with laboratory tests. The survey data showed that the Detritors in the ultra-fine milling circuit performed well. They reduced a feed F80 sizing of 46 microns to a product P80 sizing of 7.5 microns at a gross energy consumption of 37.2 kWh/t. Scale-up of ultra-fine milling Detritors was studied using a 0.55 kW laboratory batch unit and a 355 kW full-scale Detritor by processing Century zinc concentrate with 1 mm sand media. The results indicated that the 0.55 kW laboratory mill underestimated the energy consumption of the full-scale Detritor by about 20 per cent for a product P80 of seven microns. The performances of a horizontal IsaMill and a vertical Detritor were compared as ultra-fine milling devices for processing Century zinc concentrate. The experimental data demonstrated that, when using the same grinding media, the energy efficiency of the two mills is similar despite the difference in mill designs. The Detritors used for regrind duty at the Century Mine performed poorly when processing feed at 80 per cent passing 88 micron. The energy consumption was high and the product size distribution was broad with particles above 100 microns in the feed unbroken and particles below ten microns overground. A coarser ceramic media of 3 mm was therefore tested in a laboratory Detritor to process the regrind Detritor feed as an alternative to the 1 mm Colorado sand used at the Century Mine. The ceramic media reduced the energy consumption significantly and produced a narrower product size distribution, which is more desirable for the downstream flotation process.

"In this investigation, we optimize the grinding circuit of a typical chromite beneficiation plant in India. The run-of-mine ore is reduced to a particle size of less than 1 mm in the comminution circuit and concentrated using gravity separation. The comminution circuit comprises two-stage crushing and single-stage grinding in a ball mill in closed-circuit with a highfrequency screen. A detailed circuit audit was undertaken at the plant to understand and evaluate the performance of the grinding circuit. The audit revealed abnormalities in the process and design parameters which caused high energy consumption, lower throughput, and loss of ultrafine chromite. Laboratory studies indicated the differences in the grinding properties (work index, breakage rate, etc.) and liberation sizes of these ores. Studies also revealed that grinding media size, particle retention time, and pulp density are crucial in coarse grinding. Based on the laboratory grinding and characterization studies; simulation studies were performed to optimize the operating parameters of the grinding circuit.IntroductionComminution is a critical process in mineral processing which strongly influences the economics of production. In mineral processing, particles containing valuable minerals must be disintegrated at a sufficiently fine size to liberate valuable minerals from waste constituents, so that they can be easily separated by an appropriate beneficiation method. The Sukinda chrome ore beneficiation plant utilizes different types of run-of-mine (ROM) ore with different physical properties (viz. grindability characteristics, work index, mineral composition, liberation, chemical composition, etc. for the production of chrome concentrate. In the feed preparation circuit, the ROM ore is crushed and ground to below 1 mm. Grinding in the chromite beneficiation plant is a critical unit operation to achieve the desired product size of below 1 mm and to control the generation of the ultrafine particles. Furthermore, about 40% of total power consumption in the beneficiation plant is accounted for by the grinding of the ore. This implies that any improvement of the circuit performance will lead to an overall increase in productivity."

This study deals with the development of some new theory concerning the bias which will result from the employment of the t-estimator if in fact the underlying distribution of ore values is not lognormal. It is found that the t-estimator is robust as long as the logarithmic variance is small and the shape factors of the transformed distribution are not unduly large. The choice of the threshold parameter [t] for the t-estimator is important, and some hints are given how to estimate it if the sample size is small, as en- countered in borehole valuation problems.

The main sulphide zone (MSZ) of the Great Dyke is cryptic and without obvious stratigraphic markers. Although there are trends in the dimensions of the PGE and base metal profiles across the Hartley Complex, the profiles are invariant within a particular mining area. Ratios derived from these profiles are used to interpret diamond drill cores drilled ahead of underground development. Detailed logging of oriented core shows the exact position and attitude of intersected faults. Metal ratios are used to estimate fault throw to within 25 cm. It is possible to draw detailed sections showing the extent of ground disturbance well ahead of mining. Although remote sensing technology has been available for many years, it has rarely been used for monitoring mining activity. Recent studies indicate that remote sensing is also a valuable tool for managing and planning certain aspects of the mining operation. In this paper, we examine areal expansion of marble quarries and the affected vegetation over a period of 10 years in the Mugla region in Turkey, using geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing (RS) techniques. Images captured by ASTER Level 3A01 (3D Ortho Data Set), Landsat 5, and Landsat 7 satellites between 2001 and 2009 were used for the analysis. Changes in the natural vegetation as a function of the production level in the marble quarry were calculated using the normalized difference vegetation index. According to the study results, land cover and natural vegetation decreased by less than 3 per cent and 1 per cent respectively between 2001 and 2009, following an upsurge in mining activity in the region.

This paper provides an overview of possible approaches for structuring the ventilation systems for mines that will become operational within the next decade. Features addressed in the paper include: aspects of airway design and layout in the absence of centralized vertical return shafts, the impact of using diesel-powered trackless equipment in conjunction with conveyor belts in the development and production phases of the project, and the need to balance increasing electrical power costs against the requirement for reduced capital expenditure. The paper provides brief descriptions of the strategies employed in real-life situations and presents an overview of various operational parameters affecting the design of ventilation systems that will be used as ?platforms? for much deeper mines in the future.

Previously, the grade of ore at the shaft head was taken to be equivalent to the grade measured in the faces by means of chip sampling. The tonnage mined from the stopes is determined from survey volumetric measurements. Estimates of shaft head grade and tons include the grades and tons of waste, development ore, sweepings from old areas, and other sources, not all of which are sampled. The tonnage of ore delivered at the shaft is often estimated using skip factors. These factors are subject to manipulation and not all the skips are filled to the same level. Consequently, both the grade and tonnage of ore delivered at shaft head are subject to a measure of uncertainty. For many years, these uncertainties have led to disputes between shaft managers and metallurgists over the reconciliation between shaft tons and grade and plant tons and grade. These problems are compounded when several shafts feed a central processing plant. Shaft bonuses and a shaft?s profitability are affected by poor gold allocation methods. Without measurement of the grade and tonnage from all shafts, a poorly performing shaft could benefit at the expense of the other shafts. In order to improve the measurement of grades and tonnage at the shaft head, which is the custody transfer point between the mine and surface operations, South African mining companies have developed a methodology to measure the mass of ore from each shaft using rail weighing equipment, and the run-of-mine grades delivered from each shaft using cross-stream (go-belt) sampling. Harmony Gold Mining Company has implemented the rail weighing and go-belt sampling methods for their shafts. This paper deals with the statistical tests on the procedures and control measures that are in place to establish confidence in the gold allocations. The metal accounting system for examining the allocations follows the first principle of the AMIRA P754 Metal Accounting Code of Practice namely ?The metal accounting system must be based on accurate measurements of mass and metal content. It must be based on a full check-in check-out system?. The check-in is mass and grade of run-of-mine ore and the check-outs are the plant input grades and the recovery and residue from the plant. The balances between check-in and check-out are the subject of the statistical analyses, which have been conducted using the classical statistical tests and procedures that are generally used in all fields of endeavour. It is concluded that the gold allocation procedures that rely on go-belt sampling and rail weighing of ore from shafts has been successfully implemented, and that the system, which has been in operation at Harmony since 1993, has won general acceptance from stakeholders, with the gold allocations being perceived as being fair to all. Apart from the on-mine issues of bonuses and fair allocations, accurate metal accounting assists in the broader issues of generating accurate production figures for management. An added benefit of weighing and sampling ore at the shaft head has been that shafts now have daily moving average grades, which are used for grade control. The go-belt sample at the shaft head is the first accurate sample of production in the value chain from face sampling to gold bullion. Over the last several decades mineral concentrate long distance slurry pipelines have been installed and successfully operated. Nearly all were installed via the buried construction method. Their record of depend ability and economy has been well proven. However, these systems operate in regions where seasonal soil frost penetration is shallow or non-existent. In recent years interest in long distance mineral concentrate pipelines in northern cold regions has been increasing. For cold regions one must consider seasonal temperatures and soil frost penetration in order to ensure reliable operations through the year. Herein a case study is developed where heat balance and temperatures for small and large diameter long distance slurry pipelines are compared. The study development is as follows: ?Rheological properties are analysed over range of temperatures from near freezing (4ºC; 39ºF) to relatively very warm (40ºC; 104ºF). ?Then assuming similar climatic conditions, soil properties, and pipeline length, a study is carried out for two pipeline diameters, namely: a small diameter (nominal8 inch; 219.1 mm) and a large diameter (22 inch; 558.8 mm). ?The study focus is on maintaining slurry temperature above freezing throughout the pipeline length by illustrating a decision based on burial depth versus coating the pipeline with insulation.

Kriging estimates of geological resources are sometimes conditionally biased because the kriging plan contains too few samples. This may be done purposely in order to match the variance of the estimates to the true block dispersion variance. This work aims at evaluating the influence of conditional bias over the ultimate optimum pit design in relation to its shape, size and NPV (Net Present Value of profits). It has been restricted to two real case studies: a ‘carrot shaped’ gold porphyry in northern Greece and a manto-typeexotic copper deposit located in northern Chile. The methodology applied to each deposit consisted of generating a ‘real block model’ and four resource estimates by the use of conditional simulation and the application of four different kriging plans to the drillhole databases respectively. The estimation models vary in smoothness and conditional bias. Ultimate optimum pits were determined for the ‘real’ and the four different kriging models. Pit comparisons lead to the following conclusions: •In the worst case, conditional bias overestimated the project's NPV by 32% and 5% for the gold and copper deposits respectively. •The overestimation of high grades is more relevant than the underestimation of low grades. This resulted in a tonnage over-extraction of 148% and 1% for the gold and copper deposit respectively. This difference was attributable to the vastly different geometry of the deposits. •The smoothing effect of kriging, without or very little conditional bias, produced open pits that were different to the ‘true’ (ideal) ones and furthermore, underestimated the project's NPV by 10% and 6% for the gold and the copper deposits respectively. •Other factors that influence the optimum open pit design and to some extent control the effect of conditional bias are: the cut-off grade, the orebody geometry and distribution of grades within it and the amount of over-burden. The feed to the BCL concentrator is made of the ore from Phikwe No3 shaft, Selebi shaft and Selebi North shaft. The receiving bin of the concentrator has daily throughput of 7869mt live capacity of ore with feed grade from underground operation of 0.70%Ni, 0.75% Cu and 0.05% Co. The valuable minerals in the ore are Pentlandite, Chalcopyrite. Cobalt is present mainly in the solid solution in pentlandite. The common non-sulphides minerals are Amphibolites, quartz, micas, and Feldspar while pyrite and pyrrhotite are the major gangue sulphides. Pyrrhotite contains between 0.1% and 1% Ni in solid solution. From the mineralogical investigation, it was found that approximately 65% of the pentlandite in the ore occurs as exsolutions in the pyrrhotite and the grain sizes ranges from 8 to 38µm. about 25% of the nickel bearing pentlandite is medium grained and subhedral. This kind of pentlandite occurs along the cracks of pyrrhotite or as inclusions in pyrrhotite. The rest of pentlandite present is disseminated in the gangue matrix. Because of the fine occurrence of pentlandite, fine grinding was conducted in order to improve the recovery as well as the concentrate quality. A series of subsequent flotation test were performed in order to evaluate grinds of 35, 40, 45, 50, 60 and 80% passing 75µm. It was observed that ? The mass pull increased together with increasing fineness of grind ? Similar nickel recoveries were obtained at 35 and 40% passing 75µm but from 50% and 60% the grind was seen to adversely affect the nickel recovery. At 80% passing 75µm the recovery increased by small amount. ? Flotation kinetics showed higher initial nickel recoveries but these did not translate into higher final recoveries. ? Grinding finer than 80% passing 75µm yield very high grades of the concentrate in the first minute of the flotation test, and the grade is dramatically reduced in the fifth minute of the test. It was concluded that the current grind of approximately 48% passing 75µm is close to the optimum and no significant benefit were found to be associated with finer primary grinds.
