The Koidu Kimberlite Project is situated in the Kono District of Sierra Leone, approximately 330 km east of the capital city, Freetown. The mining lease area is 4 km2 and comprises 2 kimberlite pipes, 4 dyke zones and a number of blows off the dykes. Koidu Holdings established on the property and began dewatering and the removal of silt from the existing 30 m excavation of the No.1 Pipe in 2003. While the original planning for the pipes included conventional open pit operations, mitigating factors such as the proximity of the town, the presence of houses close to the perimeter of the pipe, the size of the pipe and the planned open pit depth with relevant stripping ratios, as well as uncertainties on the grades in respect of an underground operation, lent itself to the vertical pit concept. The vertical pit was established using an A-frame headgear for the hoisting arrangement, with sidewall support comprising a combination of 20 m and 40 m long cable anchors, rock bolts, wire mesh and pneumatically applied concrete. The pit reached steady state production in January 2007 and produced some 26,000 tonnes of head feed per month until August 2007 when mining reached a depth of 74 m below the pit collar (approximately 126 m below surface). Mining was suspended following a sidewall failure that disrupted operations. Now that the grades in No.1 Pipe have been validated, focus has been switched to an underground operation taking account of both No. 1 Pipe and No. 2 Pipe. While the mining costs for the vertical pit have been higher than for a conventional open pit, the concept did circumvent the social implications, the issue of grade consistency and diamond value at depth, as well as providing the time frame to carry out a full underground mining study.

Bubbles play a vital role in flotation, and their properties directly affect the flotation performance. Xanthates are one of the major collectors used in sulphide mineral flotation. It is often believed that their main function is to render the desired mineral surface hydrophobic, which is essential for the mineral particles to attach to air bubbles. This paper takes a systematic approach to assess the influence of potassium amyl xanthate (PAX) at the air–liquid phase and its interaction with the frother in the concentration of range 10–5×104 ppm. Bubble size was measured in a laboratory flotation cell using a photographic technique and the stability of bubbles was quantified in terms of coalescence time -, the time required for a bubble pair produced at adjacent capillaries to merge into a single bubble. Bubble size reduction of up to 26% was observed with increasing PAX concentration in the cell. The bubble coalescence experiments using PAX only showed that the bubbles coalesced quickly at lower concentrations (10–50 ppm), but they stayed extremely stable at higher concentrations (1×102–1×104 ppm). Further experiments were carried out where the concentration of PAX was fixed at 1 ppm and 4- Methyl-2-pentanol (MIBC) concentration was varied. The synergetic action of PAX and MIBC significantly improved the stability of bubbles in the mixed system, and is even compatible with a stronger frother. The results strongly suggest that the role of PAX at the air–liquid phase should be considered in the practice of sulphide flotation. Keywords: Bubble size, bubble coalescence, PAX, bubble stability

One of the consequences of large-scale opencast mining for coal is the disposal of an enormous volume of overburden material that needs to be removed. With the enlargement of opencast mines and associated high stripping ratios, the volume of overburden extraction is rising. Overburden from the initial mine cut has to be necessarily dumped outside the mining area until enough void is created inside the mine for back-filling operations. The quantity of overburden placed outside the mining area normally varies from 10% to 30% of the total overburden removal. The stability of these dumps placed outside the mining area is of prime importance from the point of view of smooth operations of the mines and safety of persons in and around the dumping area. Owing to increasing pressure on land use, mine operators do not have any other option other than to place the waste dumps very near to the surface edge of the pit, which may lead to failure of the topsoil benches of the working pit. This study identified major controlling parameters that influence a stable but economic combination of height and slope angle of external dumps located close to the edge of an open coal pit.

A major challenge in the mining sector is the responsible management and efficient storage of mine residue. Over recent years numerous tailings dams have experienced unintended spills and failures, with severe consequences for the mining industry, the environment, local communities, and the regional economy. The fourth industrial revolution (4IR) is impacting society due to increased interconnectivity, processing speed, and automated technologies. This paper explores whether 4IR technologies have the potential to mitigate risks associated with tailings dams. Experts in the field of tailings dam operational management were surveyed to determine their view on the risks associated with tailings dams and the potential of 4IR technologies to mitigate these risks. The survey found that a majority of experts believe that certain 4IR technologies have the potential to reduce the risks associated with tailings dam failures.

"South Africa is a water-scarce country, rated as one of the 30 driest countries in the world. Worryingly, government expects water demand to outstrip supply as early as 2025. The South African government believes that substantial volumes of water can be made available through the reuse of treated mining-impacted water. Currently, however, large volumes of treated mining-impacted water are produced, often with no end use in mind other than discharge or disposal, when these treated effluents may have further uses in applications which are currently and unnecessarily using high-quality water. Treating the wastewaters to levels that meet ’fitness-for-use’ guidelines for alternative applications such as agriculture, sanitation, or industrial processes will reduce the treatment cost burden compared to potable water production. The primary conclusion of this review is that the most suitable option for re-using treated mine-impacted water is in agriculture, for irrigation of crops (food, forage, or energy crops), which currently and unnecessarily makes use of the majority of South Africa’s high-quality resources or potable water. Other findings include the realization that although guidelines and legislation for water re-use in South Africa exist and are readily available, they tend to be contradictory and confusing in many cases. It is imperative that these ambiguities and incongruities in the available guidelines and legislation for water re-use be clarified and updated swiftly IntroductionSouth Africa is a water-scarce country and is currently rated as one of the 30 driest countries in the world, with an average rainfall of 490 mm/a, approximately half of the global average. As an indicator of the degree of regional variability in South Africa’s water supply, it has been shown that 70% of all runoff is from approximately 20% of the land area. Regardless of the water scarcity faced in South Africa, our water conservation track record is poor, with an average consumption of 280 L/d per person, almost 60% more than the global average of 175 L/d per person. Around 40% of this allocation is utilized in watering lawns and gardens (Zhuwakinyu, 2017).The South African government predicts water demand to outstrip supply as early as 2025. On an international scale, the situation appears just as dire, with the United Nations High Level Panel on Water (HLPW) expecting a 40% water shortfall by 2030, which may affect up to 1.8 billion people based on current water demand trajectories (Zhuwakinyu, 2017)."

The Hedley and Grant pillar strength formula is widely used within the South African mining industry to calculate pillar strengths in bord and pillar mining layouts, and is currently being used at Bathopele Mine. Bathopele is an operation of Anglo American Platinum near Rustenburg, mining the UG2 reef at depths ranging from 40 m to 300 m below surface. The formula includes a parameter K, which is a downrated uniaxial compressive strength value of the rock, used to calculate the strength of a pillar. At Bathopele Mine, for the shallower areas Less than 150 m the value was 33 MPa, but this was increased to 44 MPa due to the fact that rock mass conditions improved and there were no incidence of failure in the shallower areas. Underground observations showed pillars to be stable with no signs of failure, and it was questioned whether the design was not still too conservative, resulting in sub-optimal extraction ratios and consequently a loss of revenue to the mine. A trial mining section was started at the mine where the pillars were reduced from 6 m x 6 m to 5 m x 5 m and the pillar behaviour was monitored for the onset of failure. Numerical modelling was conducted using the TEXAN code to back-analyse pillar stresses in order to find a more realistic value for K. Results from the trial section indicated that the pillar design was in fact too conservative, and the value for K was adjusted to 54 MPa for future designs. This paper details the findings from underground monitoring and numerical modelling results, and includes details for further calibration of the K value in order to further optimize the extraction of the orebody.

"Centre de Morphologie MathématiqueSpecial problems arise in the evaluation of lateritic-type orebodies (Ni-Co, bauxite) or, more generally, orebodies affected by surface weathering. In this type of orebody, the vertical grade distribution shows, from the hangingwall downwards, a systematic increase followed sometimes by a certain decrease, or vice-versa. These trends appear together with irregular variations from one drill bole to the other.The problem is to characterize a vertical structure that is representative not only of the drill hole but of an entire panel or zone of influence, in order to define mineable thicknesses for given cut-off grades. The vertical grade distribution observed on the drillhole is replaced by a new curve, called 'derive' (drift), which is computed by 'universal kriging'.Once the vertical study is completed, new 'service-variables' are defined in the horizontal plane, such as mineable thickness and the corresponding average grade, economical functions (combination of the grades of several minerals). The local and global estimation of these variables can then be performed by a simple bi-dimensional kriging plan. The global estimation is summed up by several tonnage-cut-off grade curves.The practical valuation according to the above scheme of a New Caledonian lateritic nickel orebody is presented."

Several longwall faces in India have collapsed due to adverse geological conditions and/or inadequate capacity of powered supports. Thus it is imperative to access the capacity of a powered support and its interaction at longwall faces of varying geomining conditions in advance with lots of confidence. To achieve this, an index has been developed to ascertain the front leg pressure (FLP) of chock-shield support and roof-to-floor convergence (RFC) at longwall faces. The index called ?Longwall Face Stability Index? (LFSI) has been developed using statistics and Finite Element Modelling (FEM). The front leg pressure (FLP) and roof-to-floor convergence (RFC) predicted from the LFSI are validated with the field monitored data from two longwall panels. In this study, an attempt is also made to incorporate various geomining conditions into the finite element models typical of longwall mining practice. The index has taken into account the wide variations of geomining parameters like thickness, young?s modulus and friction angle of main roof (small, large), coal type (soft, hard), powered support capacity, and depth of coal seam. Thus, LFSI can be thought of as an index representing combined effect of roof type, geomining conditions and powered support capacity.

Excessive dust generation from unpaved mine haul roads is a problem common to most surface mining operations. While optimal road wearing course material selection parameters reduce the inherent dust generation potential, they do not totally eliminate fugitive dust. Many different classes of suppression or palliative treatments are available for mine haul roads and this paper initially ascertains basic selection guidelines, using a set of ideal dust palliative product, application and performance parameters based on mine road-user requirements. An evaluation and modelling methodology for truck generated fugitive dust emissions is developed as a basis for the comparative assessment of dust control strategies. For water-based spraying, a watering model was developed to estimate individual mine road watering frequencies for characteristic site parameter combinations during summer and winter operating conditions, for a required level of control or maximum dust defect. This forms the base-case scenario with which to compare the performance of other types of dust palliatives under the same conditions. Finally, a basic palliative economic evaluation model is introduced with the aim of identifying and costing the establishment, application and maintenance rejuvenation activities associated with the use of chemical palliatives. While palliative cost and performance is generally site specific, it is shown that under certain combinations of conditions, the use of dust palliatives has the potential to deliver cost savings when compared to water-based spraying.

The mining industry has much potential for automation. A great deal of work has been done on this subject and is still ongoing. With automation comes the possibility for optimization, because more information is available and actions can be repeated with more accuracy. This paper looks at possible solutions to the problem of optimizing the autonomous vehicle dispatch system in an underground mine. Possible optimization strategies are evaluated using a simulated environment. The majority of the results indicate that improvements on current methods are possible. Application of dynamic simulation for a base metal processing plant is discussed. The plant receives ore of variable quality from two pits and blending had to be applied to maximise recovery. The plant employs multiple stage crushing, screening, dense media separation, two-stage milling, flotation and further filtration. Stockpiles and bunkers are used in the plant to cater for breakdowns and operating delays, the latter being appropriately incorporated in the model. A detail dynamic simulation model was constructed from the rock face to the filtration plant to assist the plant design, notably with definition of the ore blending method, sizing storage capacity and in-plant conveyors. The plant model was broken down to capital equipment items and various feed types and mass balances were tested to ensure that the production target is met. The dynamic simulation tested the proposed blending method, identified bottlenecks, produced risk profiles for all strategic storage facilities and overall helped minimise the project risks and improve confidence in the plant design. A newly started copper hydrometallurgical plant was confronted with a manganese oxidation issue in electrowinning. This oxidation, in the absence of the amount of iron required to stabilise the electrolyte oxidation-reduction potential, is known to produce oxidants (MnO2, MnO4) that can cause accelerated degradation of the organic phase components in solvent extraction and corrosion of lead anodes in electrowinning. The overpotential required to build up the protection layer on new anodes causes an increased electrolyte potential that creates oxidized species in the electrowinning tankhouse, and these species come back to solventextraction plant with the recycled spent electrolyte. This paper discusses the impacts of manganese oxidants on the health of a plant organic phase. It also outlines the actions taken using iron scraps and sulfur dioxide to mitigate the problem that happened due to the lack of ferrous iron sulfate available on site, as recommended for better control.

Water plays a significant role in minerals processing; this is especially true in coal preparation where water-based beneficiation is widely accepted and consistently delivering sharp separation efficiencies and high product yields. Although wet processing is favoured, the substantial process water requirement may prove this impractical and unsustainable in some parts of the world. Many coal-rich regions (including South Africa) have experienced severe water shortages. Coupled with the effects of drought, some countries experience freezing winters from which problems related to frozen process water and machinery may arise. Hence coal preparation practices will soon have to adapt, irrespective of the technical and economic feasibility offered by the currently employed water-based methods. As a result, extensive research into the development of dry methods for effectively beneficiating coal has progressed. This review paper intends to provide a collection of the relevant information pertaining to dry coal processing globally, and aid in understanding the applicability, performance, success or failure thereof. The methods available for dry materials preparation, with special regard to those applicable for coal beneficiation, are detailed in terms of principle, applicability, limitations and performance. Dry coal beneficiation has potential to aid the current wet-based methods with some considerations to possible limitations set forth by coal geology, application, product specification, particle size distribution, moisture, efficiency, capacity and cost. These methods may be established in future, especially in the arctic, arid and under-developed regions through new plant installations, expansions and small mines processing. Skorpion Zinc is located 25 km north-west of the small settlement of Rosh Pinah in southern Namibia. Commissioned in early 2003, Skorpion Zinc became the first mine-to-metal operation to commercially apply a purely hydrometallurgical process route to exploit a zinc oxide orebody. The novel technology, known as The Modified ZincexTM Process patented by Tecnicas Reunidas, comprises sulphuric acid atmospheric leaching, zinc solvent extraction (SX) and electrowinning (EW) to produce London metal exchange (LME) Special high grade (SHG) zinc. Forming the core of the process, the SX step has thrived in its role as a barrier to impurities and also in the upgrading of the pregnant liquor solution (PLS), converting it into a loaded electrolyte (LE) sufficiently rich and pure for EW. Against this successful run, a number of challenges have, however, been encountered in SX due the emergence of upset conditions largely emanating from upstream processes. This paper outlines some of the major deviations that have beset the SX process in its first five years of continuous operation. Impurity excursions, temperature depressions, changes in phase continuity, excess aqueous entrainment, the effect of colloidal silica and the accumulation of rare earth elements on the organic phase will be discussed in detail. The large scale of cave mines leads to many challenges, including operational logistics and geomechanics design. In current practice, pillar stability assessment relies almost exclusively on stress analysis. However, stability is also affected by other factors including those related to operational aspects of the mining method, the effects of which are difficult to account for during the design stages. In this paper we present a case study of the application of a machine learning approach to evaluate the influence of these operational factors on pillar stability at the Chuquicamata underground cave mine in northern Chile. Due to the likely multi-factorial damage process leading to collapses and considering the different pillar conditions, a tree-based machine learning method was used and analysed to improve the understanding of the relative importance of the various contributing factors. Unlike stress analysis methods, it does not require any a priori knowledge of failure mechanisms, nor the calibration of associated controlling parameters. The proposed random forest model predicted pillar collapses with 80% accuracy despite limited samples to model from. The main contributing factors to collapses were found to be related to available pillar volume, cave front geometry, and time under abutment stress conditions. The effects and interactions of such factors were also studied, showing that careful and improved control over operational conditions can significantly reduce the likelihood of pillar collapses. These conclusions could not have been obtained from stress analysis alone, illustrating the complementary nature of conventional stress analysis and machine learning approaches.

"When considered collectively, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves are arguably a key asset for any mining company. Mineral Reserves are the economically mineable portions of Mineral Resources. They therefore provide a good indication of the economic prospects in the short to medium term and associated non-financial impairments for mining companies, hence a focus on Mineral Reserves. An assessment of modifying factors for converting Mineral Resources to Mineral Reserves revealed that Mineral Reserves were most sensitive to long-term commodity prices, hence the focus on long-term commodity prices. The justification for selecting gold and platinum mines is that they collectively make a significant contribution to South Africa’s earnings from mining.The introduction of the South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (SAMREC Code) in 2000 informed the basis for analysing long-term commodity price assumptions for major South African gold and platinum mining companies between 2000 and 2016. The analysis revealed that the least number of non-financial impairments occurred when long-term commodity prices were within ±5% of spot prices. This finding suggests that this range is the ideal range for long-term commodity price assumptions to improve confidence in Mineral Reserve declarations and minimize impairments. Introduction The South African Code for the Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves (SAMREC Code) defines a Mineral Resource as ‘a concentration or occurrence of solid material of economic interest in or on the Earth’s crust in such form, grade or quality and quantity that there are reasonable prospects for eventual economic extraction’ (SAMREC, 2016, p. 18). Mineral Resources are categorized according to increasing levels of geoscientific confidence or knowledge, from Inferred to Indicated and lastly, Measured categories. The SAMREC Code defines a Mineral Reserve as ‘the economically mineable part of a Measured and/or Indicated Mineral Resource’ (SAMREC, 2016, p. 25). In some of the other reporting codes such as the Australasian Code for Reporting of Exploration Results, Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves (the JORC Code), a Mineral Reserve is synonymous with an Ore Reserve. The conversion of Mineral Resources to Mineral Reserves involves applying modifying factors, which are non-resource considerations. The modifying factors used in the Mineral Reserve estimation process include mining, metallurgical, processing, infrastructure, economic, marketing, legal, environmental, social, and governmental factors. Each of these modifying factors consists of several components which require due consideration in the estimation of Mineral Reserves. Table I shows some of the components typically considered for each of the modifying factors."

Buying centres are the first point of contact that determines whether ore will be considered as having sufficient provenance to be considered ethically sourced. The information that needs to be captured on the blockchain platform ranges from reports on in-loco inspections and audits of mining and purchase sites. This will guide passive and active monitoring of mining activities, trade-offs for identification systems, including biometrics for the registration of artisanal sellers, scrutiny on the selection of security measures and companies for buyer centres and stockpiling warehouses, evaluation of active and passive infrastructure security, and remote monitoring applications. Assistance with selection and training in geochemical testing instruments to determine the grade of ore material or concentrates and sorting, on-the-ground investigations, guidance on monitoring methods from stockpile and packing area along the transport route to the final destination are required.

The platinum group metals (PGMs), i.e. ruthenium, rhodium, palladium, osmium, iridium, and platinum, are typically found in association with each other, but also importantly, with nickel and copper. Typically Platinum and palladium have the greatest economic significance and other PGMs are typically produced as co-products of these. With recent increases in the value of nickel, cobalt, and the PGMs and an ever increasing focus on the sustainable use of metals, interest in the processing of secondary feed material sources and metal-bearing residues has also substantially increased. As an efficient, proven, and environmentally sound technology Outotec Ausmelt Top Submerged Lance (TSL) Technology has gained commercial acceptance in the nickel industry, including PGM recovery. For the processing of nickel- and PGM-bearing feed materials, five Outotec Ausmelt Furnaces at four sites are in operation. Two of these furnaces are located in Rustenburg, South Africa, which is by far the biggest mine-based producer of platinum. Outotec also has hydrometallurgical processes available for further treatment and extraction of PGMs, which are also briefly discussed.
