"Crushing and grinding of ores and their beneficiation by washing away gangue minerals has been practiced since ancient times. Primitive crushing was done by hand pounding the ore with a hard stone then by using metallic hammers. The mortar and pestle was mechanized using a lever and when the size of operations increased in the middle ages, the stamp mill was introduced. The grindstone played an important role in grinding of ores. Panning for gold and hand sorting of minerals were two old methods of separation, now gave way to modern techniques. Flotation started in the middle of the nineteenth century by using oils to collect the mineral particles and float them on the surface of the aqueous slurry. It was only in the 1920s when it was discovered that organic compounds were affective floating agents. Textbooks written by distinguished engineers such as Rittinger, Rickard, Pryor, Taggart, Richards, Gaudin, and others contributed to the recognition of this field as a new discipline to be taught in Universities. INTRODUCTIONThe ancient Egyptians knew already that it would be easier to melt an earth rich in gold particles than another which is poor. As a result all efforts were made to enrich the gold by washing away the light gangue minerals (Figure 1). Another ancient method for enriching gold particles from a river stream was by means of fleece, hence the Greek myth of the “golden fleece”. The present day Georgia was known in ancient times as Colchis and was a center for gold working. It was known to the ancient Greek as the land of Golden Fleece. The use of special cloth to catch gold particles was also described by Agricola in his 1555 book De Re Metallica (Figure 2)."

"The Pogo project is located on the Goodpaster River, 38 miles north of Delta Junction in east central Alaska. Sumitomo Metal Mining and Teck Corporation are planning to develop a 2,500 ton per day underground mine and mill at Pogo. A preliminary resource of 5.5 million ounces of gold has been identified in two flat lying lenses. An underground adit has been developed to facilitate underground drilling of the deposit and to provide samples for bench and pilot scale metallurgical testwork.Flowsheet development included the evaluation of several processing options. The final flowsheet selected includes SAGhall mill grinding, gravity concentration with intensive cyanidation and direct electrowinning, sulfide flotation with ultrafine regrinding, and cyanide leaching and CIP gold recovery from the flotation concentrates. Flotation tailings will be filtered for placement in a dry stack storage facility or disposed of as paste backfill underground. All of the CIP tailings will be disposed of underground as paste backfill. A pilot plant was carried out to evaluate the proposed flowsheet described above and to confirm the gravity recovery predictions.Great care was taken in the development of the flowsheet and site layout concepts to mitigate the environmental impact of the proposed operation. An overview of the site water management concepts is presented and the impact of water issues on the process flowsheet is discussed."

"In October 1982, Rio Algom Limited, purchased a tin prospect near East Kemptville, Nova Scotia, from Shell Canada Resources. This purchase led to the development of the first substantial tin mine in North America. This paper deals with the drillingand blasting operations at Rio Algom, in particular the use of emulsion explosives technology.This presentation describes what emulsion explosives and Heavy AN/FO are, and the support system used to deliver these products to the blast site.HistoryThe East Kemptville mine site was discovered by Shell Canada Resources (SCR) in July 1978. SCR started diamond drilling on the tin prospect in March 1979. After 8220 m of BQ drilling, it was estimated a reserve of 56 000 000 tonnes of 0.165% Sn was present.The property, which is located 54 km northeast of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia (Fig. 1), showed, after a feasibility study that, given an ore treatment rate of 9000 tonnes per day, a mine life of 17 years could be expected.GeologyThe tin deposit of the East Kemptville Mine, occurs in granitic rocks at their contact with metasedimentary rocks. The mineralization is in the form of cassiterite with associated sulphides of copper and zinc. The tin occurs in a stockwork of tin bearing Greisen alteration zones.East Kemptville MineThe mine planned an open pit operation with the first five years being mined at a rate of 14 000 tonnes per day, of which 5000 tonnes will be waste and low grade ore. Eventually, the total mining rate will be 21 000 tonnes per day, including 12 000 tonnes of waste and low grade ore. Figure 2 shows the general layout of the mine site.East Kemptville Chooses Emulsion ExplosivesIn December 1984, East Kemptville Mine awarded the Explosives Division of C-I-L Inc. a contract to supply explosives to the borehole. The system chosen gives East Kemptville the on-the-bench choice of regular AN/Fa, or a high density, Heavy AN /Fa product called SuperAN· or a water resistant emulsion explosive called MAGNAFRAC· for holes that cannot be dewatered.Emulsion ExplosivesAn emulsion is an intimate mixture of two liquids that do not dissolve in each other. Emulsions have contributed to our daily lives in such products as insecticides, salad dressings and cosmetics."

"In October 1984, Rocanville Division began using a stacking system to handle potash mill tailings. Previous to this date, mill tailings were slurried to the top of the tailings pile and allowed to debrine while flowing mobile stackers. The stackers consist of cyclone packs to debrine the tailings and drag conveyors with screw discharges to deposit the tailings onto the existing pile. The paper will deal with the various aspects of the project from conception to its present state. Key Words: stacking, mobile stackers, Linatex Separators, potash mill tailings, reclaim brine ponds, settling ponds, tailings pile. IntroductionPrevious to 1984, when the stacking project was first implemented, potash mill tailings were handled as follows. Mill tailings were first debrined to approximately 65% solids using a cyclone cluster. The cyclone underflows were then introduced onto a vacuum scroll filter table. Here the tailings were further debrined and discharged into the disposal tank where the tailings were reslurried with reclaim brine and pumped to the tailings disposal site. At the disposal site the slurry was discharged onto the tailings pile and by a natural settling process the tailings were debrined with the brine ultimately collected in the reclaim brine ponds. The shape and profile of the tailings pile was controlled by building salt dikes to control the flow of the discharged tailings slurry. As the tailings pile grew in height, booster pumps were added to the disposal system."

"Pre-concentration in minerals processing presents clear advantages in energy efficiency, water efficiency, reduction of consumables and minimization of capital and operating costs. Outotec’s sorting solutions are powered by Tomra Sorting in order to achieve pre-concentration of concentrator feed in a variety of mineral processing applications. Sensor based sorting combines advanced sensors with rapid computational evaluation and mechanical separation of valuable material from waste and/or gangue. Modern sensor based sorting machines typically use fine air jets to propel individual rocks, thus optimizing recovery and minimizing “mis-sorting”.Gold is generally present in such low concentrations that sensors suitable for ore sorting cannot directly detect it. Therefore, in order to sort gold ore, properties of associated host rock are used. Free and sulphidic gold is often hosted on the quartz-host rock contact zone. Laser scattering effect can be used to detect the surfaces of quartz and composite quartz-host rock particles for subsequent sorting with very high recovery of 95 to 99%. In addition, ore often preferentially fractures along the quartz-host rock contact zone in the crushing circuit. This behavior helps because it liberates more quartz for detection.The feasibility of sorting is investigated for four gold projects in Northern Europe with similar mineralogy. This includes geometallurgical evaluation, amenability testing, small scale “mini-bulk” factory testing in full scale sensor based sorting. The results of the various tests are presented and basic feasibility demonstrated with information on flow sheet development. In addition, the amenability process is evaluated and recommendations made for future projects."

"Asbestos tailings are a typical serpentine, hydrated magnesium silicate, consisting primarily of antigorite and a few per cent of unrecovered fibrous chrysotile. Serpentine has unique thermal properties in that dehydroxylating calcination at 600 to 700°C can yield an amorphous structure in which most of the magnesia is liberated from the original bond with silica and thereby rendered chemically active. The amount of activated magnesia can be quantified by selective leaching with a weak acid such as acetic acid. Many wet processes have been proposed to extract magnesium values from calcined or natural serpentine by means of various acids and their ammonium salts. However, the only commercial utilization of serpentine today is found in dry processes such as the production of fused magnesium phosphate fertilizer .The present paper reviews the physical chemistry of the dehydroxylation of serpentine and also various wet and dry processes in order to provide a general view regarding the chemical transformation of asbestos tailings.IntroductionAsbestos fibers occur as chrysotile, a serpentine polymorph. More than nine tenths of mined asbestos ores consist of massive non-fibrous serpentine, primarily the polymorph antigorite, which is discarded as tailings after fiber extraction. For many decades, Quebec has been a world leader in the production of asbestos fibers. As a result, colossal tonnages of serpentine have accumulated in the Eastern Townships'!'. Serpentine minerals are found in large deposit s throughout the world, and significant research efforts have been made, particularly in Japan and the USSR, mostly in attempts to extract magnesia or silica values therefrom.The chemical composition of serpentine (chrysotile and antigorite) may be ideally expressed as Mg3Si2Os(OH). which corresponds to 43.7% MgO and 43.3% SiO2. Natural serpentines often contain a few per cent of Ni-bearing magnetite and other impurities, and therefore the contents of MgO and Si02are both about 40% or lower.Serpentine (hydrated magnesium silicate) is virtually insoluble in weak acids. However, when dehydroxylated under controlled conditions, ' it decomposes to an amorphous state in which magnesia and silica are isolated and chemically active. The magnesia so activated is readily soluble in weak acids. This unique characteristic of calcined serpentine, first discovered in 1942,, has since attracted the attention of innumerable researchers, whence many processes have been proposed."

"This paper presents the mixed spectral behaviour of iron ores from deposits in Gua, India. Spectral signatures of powder samples and their two-component mixtures were generated by spectro - radiometry. Spectra were divided into continuum and absorption components. A modified Gaussian model was used to extract subtle features from the absorption components of the spectra. A linear unmixing model (LUM) applied to estimate minerals from the spectra of mixed powder samples indicated that this model achieved an R2 value of 0.88. The LUM was then applied to estimate the abundance of ores from a hyperspectral satellite image of the deposit area.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article montre le comportement spectral mixte de minerais de fer de gisements à Gua, en Inde. Les signatures spectrales d’échantillons de poudres et leurs mélanges à deux composantes ont été générés par spectroradiométrie. Les spectres ont été divisés en composantes de continuum et d’absorption. Un modèle gaussien modifié a été utilisé pour extraire des caractéristiques subtiles des composantes d’absorption des spectres. Un modèle de démélange linéaire, appliqué pour estimer les minéraux dans le spectre des échantillons de poudres mixtes, indique que ce modèle a atteint une valeur R2 de 0,88. "IntroductionShot-saws are used for sawing rock throughout the dimension stone industry especially in granite quarry mills. Shot-saws, as currently designed, have an inherent wear problem which leads to slow cutting rates and repetitive blade changes which consumes much time. Because the saw blades are made from steel the abrasive shot used with them is limited to a certain hardness which effects the over-all efficiency of the sawing operation. Suggestions are made toward optimization of blade design and the sawing process. Blade DesignA common steel blade design is shown in Figure I. Note the perforations in the blade. These perforations or holes in the blade serve two or three purposes. The most obvious reason is to allow the abrasive shot a pocket in which to collect at the bottom of the blade, so that it can be distributed from these pockets into the cutting zone underneath the blade. The abrasive is fed to the saw in a slurry and usually comes in from the top. The blade must then cut a kerf wider than itself in order that the abrasive grains have a path leading from the top of the blade, down along its sides, and finally reaching the pockets and cutting zones. This circuitous path followed by the abrasive leads to side wear on the blades and high friction which can lead to blade buckling in severe cases. However, the fluidized path of the abrasives down the sides of the blade serves another purpose which is a positive gain if conditions are properly controlled. The abrasive slurry interacts with the perforations of the blade, the blade itself and the rock. This gap and the perforations in the blade, which are fluid filled, are sites of constant shearing motion. Eddy currents form in these gaps and pockets which tend to stabilize the blade by setting up balanced hydrodynamic forces which otherwise might not form in a non-perforated blade. A stable blade produces a more uniform cut in the rock. The third and final reason for the perforations are to allow the blade to wear in such a fashion that new pockets are always being formed and, consequently, new cutting surfaces between these pockets are also formed."

Polaris Operations, a Cominco Ltd. lead-zinc mine, is located on Little Cornwallis Island, Northwest Territories, at Latitude 75°23' N and Longitude 96°75' w. When the Polaris Mine went into operation in late 1981, it became the world's most northerly base metal mine.The Polaris Concentrator, housed in a unique process barge, is a basic lead-zinc concentrator where flotation is used to produce the lead and zinc concentrates.The paper describes the ""coarse lead"" flotation feature incorporated in the concentrator flowsheet and describes the start-up problems and continuing operation of this circuit.

"The risk management objective of the AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting has seldom been systematically investigated in the literature up to the authors’ knowledge. Risk is defined in the Australian Standard on Risk Management (AS/NZS 4360:2004), as “the chance of something happening that will have an impact on objectives”. The simplified economic analysis performed in this paper has lead to define “something happening” as measurement non-representativity and “impact on objectives” as NSR loss from the optimal NSR. This has pinpointed a missing link being the establishment of a relation between NSR in flotation plants and measurement representativity. The proposed framework, referred to as the total cost of representativity, answers the previously unanswered question of how much accuracy/reproducibility is fit for purpose in a given flotation plant. Authors readily acknowledge that it is way easier to assess the cost of accuracy/reproducibility than the cost of inaccuracy/irreproducibility. However, this exercise not only answers previously unanswered questions but also establishes an essential link with operational excellence. This paper exposes why such operational excellence could neither be attained nor proved without a state of the art metal accounting system. This should impact not only how metal accounting systems are audited/designed/refactored, but also how flotation plants are designed.IntroductionBecause representative metal accounting is a vital source of information for the financial accounts of a mining/metallurgical company, the need for a code on metal accounting was recognized in 2001 and a team was formed in 2003, under the sponsorship of several major mining houses, to produce such a code. Table 1 exposes the two main objectives of this AMIRA Code of Practice for Metal Accounting."

"This paper presents key outcomes of a major Asia-Pacific Partnership project between the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation and Huainan Mining Industry Group Co. Ltd. to develop and demonstrate advanced technologies at Pansan mine, Huainan, China. A comprehensive approach assessed fundamental strata and coal seam methane conditions during mining and optimized mining sequences and coal mine methane capture systems. The project demonstrated a practical approach and procedures for advanced coal and methane co-extraction systems, improved mining safety and efficiency, increased methane capture and use, and reduced fugitive methane emissions.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article donne les principaux résultats d’un grand projet de partenariat Asie- Pacifique entre le CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation) [Organisation de recherche scientifique et industrielle du Commonwealth australien] et le Huainan Mining Industry Group Co. Ltd.; ce projet cherche à développer et à démontrer des technologies avancées à la mine Pansan, à Huainan, en Chine. Une perspective globale a évalué les conditions fondamentales des strates et du méthane dans les couches de charbon durant l’exploitation et a optimisé les séquences d’extraction et les systèmes de captage du méthane dans les mines de charbon. "This paper studies the characterization and dissolution of a Nigerian pyrolusite ore, reporting the results of ore physicochemical analyses and detailed ore characterization before and after leaching at optimal conditions. Ore dissolution rate increased proportional to acid concentration and temperature, but decreased with ore particle size. In a 4 M H2SO4 solution at 80°C with a particle size of –90+75 µm and moderate agitation, ore dissolution rate reached 78.7%. Unleached residue produced under optimal leaching conditions consisted of silica with admixtures of cristobalite and stishovite. The calculated activation energy supported the proposed diffusion control mechanism for the process.RÉSUMÉ Le présent article étudie la caractérisation et la dissolution d’un minerai de pyrolusite du Nigeria, il donne les résultats des analyses physicochimiques du minerai et de la caractérisation détaillée du minerai avant et après la lixiviation sous des conditions optimales. Le taux de dissolution du minerai augmentait proportionnellement à la concentration de l’acide mais décroissait avec la taille des particules. Dans une solution 4 M H2SO4 à 80 °C, avec une granulométrie de –90+75 µm et une agitation modérée, le taux de dissolution du minerai a atteint 78,7 %. Les résidus produits sous des conditions optimales de lixiviation étaient constitués de silice avec un mélange de cristobalite et de stishovite. L’énergie calculée d’activation supportait le mécanisme de contrôle de la diffusion proposé pour le procédé."

This paper studies the effect of binder type and content on the early age development of cemented paste backfill (CPB). The early age development of the mixtures is analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDX). These tests show that the early age development of CPB is sensitive to changes in the paste composition. The properties of the CPB depend on the cement content and hydration time. The quantity of hydration products increases with hydration time for all of the mixtures containing cement. However, the high cement content pastes (at least 50% PC) exhibit complete coverage of the PC grains and mine tailings by C-S-H, while the low cement content paste shows scattered coverage of the PC grains and mine tailings and a higher void ratio.

There was a requirement to support this new facility with state-of-the-art management information systems.This paper will discuss the development and evolution of the corporation's computerized information systems with specific emphasis on the utilization of computer systems to assist maintenance personnel in performing their work activities:Note: In August of 1989, the administration and operation of the Key Lake Mine was assumed by CAMECO - A Canadian Mining and Energy Corporation.IntroductionThe Key Lake Mining Corporation was incorporated in 1979 and operates a $500 million uranium mining and milling complex located in northern Saskatchewan.The feasibility study and environmental impact statements for the Key Lake Mine were submitted in 1979and in August of 1981, following a public inquiry, approval to proceed with construction was granted. Ore processing commenced in October of 1983 and during 1984 a total of 10.4 million pounds of uranium oxide (U3O8) was produced. In 1987, an annual production of 13.5 million pounds was achieved clearly establishing Key Lake Mining Corporation as the world's leading producer of uranium oxide. Current ore resources are expected to extend production of the Key Lake facility into the year 2000."

"Sylvinite ore from the Saskatoon area typically contains about 5% insolubles, occurring as clays and carbonates. These insoluble slimes must be removed sufficiently well to permit an efficient subsequent potassium chloride flotation, due to their high adsorptive capacity for amines used as potash collectors. The insolubles are liberated from sylvinite by high attrition scrubbing in a slurry. The liberated slimes are separated by multistage cycloning or by a selective flocculation-flotation process.An outline of the potash processing operations at Agrium Vanscoy Potash Operations is given, emphasizing the insoluble slimes froth flotation separation process. This process was originally implemented at the Agrium plant in the mid- 1970's and replaced a hydrocyclone system.IntroductionAgrium Vanscoy Potash Operations is located 40 Km southwest of Saskatoon, almost midway between the communities of Vanscoy and Delisle. Processing operations started in 1969, and the annual production capability was subsequently increased to the current 1.8 MM tonnes per year of muriate of potash.The mining operation at Agrium Potash which was described in a paper by Jones and Pruggerl , is done underground using four large continuous double rotor boring machines for the main production with development done by heliminers. Annual ore production is 5.5 MM tonnedannum. Ore is hoisted 1,100 m to surface for processing."

"The Las Cristinas deposit contains about 10.2 million ounces of gold at a grade of 1.3 g/t. The deposit comprises a layer of fully oxidized saprolite (SAPO), a layer of sulphide-enriched saprolite (SAPS), carbonate leached bedrock (CLB) and carbonate stable or un-leached bedrock (CSB). Gold occurs at about the same level in all lithological groups. The bedrock units contain minor amounts of copper (about 0.1%) as chalcopyrite, while SAPO contains virtually no copper it having been leached and deposited in the SAPS zone.A previous owner started investigation of the Las Cristinas deposit in Venezuela in 1991. Over the next seven years, 1174 holes with a total length of 159 km were drilled, extensive metallurgical testwork, including pilot plant operations, were conducted and feasibility studies were completed. Construction was started in 1997 and again in 1999 but was suspended.Crystallex has been producing gold in Venezuela since the early 1990’s. In 1997, Crystallex acquired Inversora Mael which had held two of the claims to the Las Cristinas concessions since 1986. In September 2002, Crystallex entered into a definitive agreement with the Corporación Venezolana de Guayana, (CVG), to develop the Las Cristinas deposit.An extensive program of studies and testwork was started in early 2003 to determine an optimum development plan for Las Cristinas. Mine Development Associates, SNC–Lavalin Engineers and Constructors, SGS Lakefield Research Limited, J.R. Goode and Associates, and Professor A. Laplante at McGill University acted as the main contractors.Because of the potential value of by-product copper, earlier flowsheets used carbon-in-leach for SAPO, but processed all other ore types by flotation to produce a gold-copper concentrate with cyanide leaching of cleaner tailings to maximize gold recovery. Cyanide recovery was necessitated by the high copper content of the leach feed. Initial studies of available data by Crystallex revealed that direct leaching of all ore types would provide about 11% more gold recovery than the previously selected flotation route with reduced capital and operating costs.Bench and pilot scale studies have confirmed that a SAG-ball mill-gravity-CIL route is very effective for all ore types and will give about 89% gold recovery. This paper describes the recent testwork, discusses the proposed plant design, and presents economic data."

"The Montcalm concentrator operation was successfully commissioned in fall of 2004 at the Xstrata Copper’s Kidd Creek Metallurgical Site, Timmins. The start-up met or exceeded the Type 1 profile as defined by McNulty. Since the life-of-mine was estimated at seven years, concentrator optimisation endeavours had to be fast-tracked. These joint endeavours between the Kidd Creek Metallurgical Site staff and Xstrata Process Support were focussed on increasing ore treatment capacity and metallurgical performance. This paper reviews these endeavours. A flotation circuit survey, together with appropriate Process Mineralogy measurements, identified recovery opportunities in both locked and overground pentlandite in final tailings. The bypassing of first rougher concentrate directly to final concentrate was also recommended, given the composition of that stream. A subsequent grinding circuit survey identified a low circulating load due to poor classification performance. Modelling of these data suggested a change to the cyclone nest and pumping arrangements in the grinding circuit. Implementation of these recommendations has led to a 25% gain in milling circuit capacity as well as improved flotation circuit performance. These improvements amount to nickel and copper recovery gains of 2.57 and 1.83% respectively.INTRODUCTIONHistoryThe Montcalm Ni/Cu Ore is processed in a spare division of the Xstrata Copper’s Kidd Creek concentrator, located near Timmins in Northern Ontario. The flowsheet had been specified by earlier work, and the project fast-tracked so as to commission production operations into a time of rising nickel and copper prices. The Montcalm flow sheet starts with on-site ore crushing to - 19 mm. The crushed ore is trucked to the concentrator. This off-site crushing minimizes contamination with the Kidd Creek Cu/Zn ore. In the concentrator, rod and ball mill grinding to a target p80 of 39 µm produces the Rougher Flotation Feed. Flotation to Bulk Concentrate follows as Cu/Ni roughing and two stages of cleaning. Bulk concentrate is subjected to Cu/Ni separation using conventional column cells. Xanthate is the collector and MIBC is used as frother. Depramin C, a CMC (Carboxy Methyl Cellulose) is added to depress ferromagnesian silicates in the flotation process."

"Smoky River Coal Limited has successfully completed a major program involving the pattern rock anchoring of a high, steeply dipping footwall slope. The slope dips at approximately 65 to 70 degrees to the north, is benched for the upper 200 feet, is supported with rock anchors for another 240feet, and is unsupported at the pit bottom. In addition to the height and steepness, several structural features including shears, rolls and stratigraphic pinch- outs complicate footwall stability.This paper presents an overview of the project with descriptions of the engineering geology and footwall design, anchor installation, instrumentation and monitoring and a cost summary.IntroductionSmoky River Coal's mines are located in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains near Grande Cache, Alberta, approximately 200 miles west of Edmonton. The Smoky River coal leases were initially developed in the late 1960s and, except for minor shutdowns, have been in continuous operation since 1969 producing a low volatile metallurgical coal, mainly for the export market. Initial coal production was from underground mines; sur face mining started in 1971, and a large surface mine, No.9 Mine, was opened in 1974. Since that time, a number of open pits have been mined within the No.9 Mine area. Surface mining is by conventional shovel-truck method s with the use of a backhoe for mining the narrow pit bottoms.Coal recovery is mainly from the No.4 seam, which has a typical unstructured thickness of 20 feet. The most attractive opportunities for open-pit mining exist in areas of over thickening of the coal seam in the hinge zones of synclines and anticlines and in dip-slope situations. The mining of the more structurally complex pits and steeply-dipping footwall slopes requires that consideration be given to footwall stability."
