Introduction By far the largest part of the money raised for mining is raised by honest and legitimate means; but a not inconsiderable amount is raised by fraudulent sales methods. It will be conceded without argument that the greatest menace to the mining business is the fraudulent promoter. The sale of worthless mining stocks to the public by high-pressure. salesmen, house to house canvassers, telephone campaigns, fraudulent use of the mails, fraudulent statements, and reloading, has seriously prejudiced the public against even legitimate mining. A very small percentage of the funds raised by such fraudulent means is ever spent on the property, but instead is absorbed by the promoter in illegitimate' profits, enormous commissions, high office rents, and other expenditures, and is just so much subtracted from the fund which the legitimate developer needs to bring new mines to the point of production. The mining fraternity has been at fault in that, while they recognized this situation, they made no adequate attempt to rectify it. They knew that these fraudulent practises were conducted by parasites who attached themselves to the mining business in boom times and claimed to be part and parcel of it, but who were merely professional salesmen and promoters who, when there was not a mining boom, were selling sky-line real-estate, worthless oil stocks, or fraudulent securities which happened to be popular with the public. While mining people had this distinction well in mind, the public did not differentiate between the crooked promoter temporarily selling fraudulent mining stock and the honest promoter who made mining finance his life work; and we did little to make this distinction clear to the public or to sweep these money grabbers out of our house. The historic boom of 1927-8 and '29 brought with it the usual crop of crooked mining promoters, and the scandals resulting from their operations forced the Governments into the enactment of laws to attempt to protect the gullible public against the operations of these meanest of thieves and to appease public clamour.

"It is difficult to quantify comparatively the gassiness of a property. The most common index to gassiness, cubic feet of gas per ton of coal mined, is very arbitrary and does not take into account the geological setting nor the mining operation. The gassiness of a virgin coal in situ can be assessed, but no method is precise and the most accurate methods involve prolonged field and laboratory experiments. In general, gassiness increases with depth. Whereas 'gas' normally implies methane, other gases such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide, etc. may be present in seam gas also. The inflammability of methane is a problem, particularly the explosibility of a methane-air mixture; also oxygen dilution is involved in high gas concentrations and some gases are poisonous even in low concentrations. Cross measuring into a virgin seam is usually not as troublesome as development in the seam, where narrow openings may require strong ventilation to dilute gases exuding from the face and sides. Total extraction presents problems of gas from the working seam, or from adjacent seams, particularly at the return side, or of gas-laden air from the goaf streaming out or sometimes surging out intermittently, again on the return side. In pillar extraction or longwall retreating special roadways may be required to allow the side-to-side and end-to-end flushing of the goaf which is somewhat inherent in longwall advancing. Layering may occur, particularly where ventilation conditions are not brisk. Outbursts of gas from adjoining seams may be induced by sudden rupture of roof or floor in caving workings. Outbursts of coal and gas from the working seam may occur, mostly in development work, under special environmental circumstances. Gas problems may be reduced or eliminated by predrainage of gas ....:. rarely successful from the working seam - usually undertaken from adjoining seams prior to escape of gas released by caving. The ideal solution - general predrainage of gas to the surface from measures prior to mining - has yet to be accomplished. • In the planning of gassy mines it is possible to make an assessment of gas contained in the seams and to estimate what proportion will be released into the mine air, but emission of gas into mine workings is never steady and at present there is no better planning criterion than experience at the mine next door!"

The Cenozoic unconsolidated strata with the thickness of 100 to 240m in the east area of China are composed of clay, sandy clay and hardpan, etc. Numerous shafts of the coal mines in these areas have been damaged to various degrees since 1987, with the main reason for this being the subsidence of the super-thick unconsolidated strata. To prevent the continuing settlement deformation of unconsolidated strata caused by groundwater removal, long-term water injection through multiple boreholes controlled the settlement deformation of unconsolidated strata. A new type of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensing system was successfully used for real-time strain monitoring of the unconsolidated strata during water injection at a coal mine in China. A mathematical model for the compression settlement induced strain calculation is proposed which can assist understanding of the effect of water injection on the ground. With the increase in water injection, the unconsolidated strata compressed state was improved by the transition of the stress state from compressive to tensile stress. The wavelength change of fiber Bragg grating sensors corresponded with the trend of the water level in the same strata. Engineering practice indicates that these sensors can normally, safely and reliably survive conditions associated with hydrous unconsolidated strata. The FBG sensing can be used for continuous lifetime monitoring of the system, starting with real-time monitoring during low-pressure water injection process of multi-borehole. The results will give important guidance for water injection and mastering stratum subsidence.

This paper presents the main features of coal mining in Japan, as determined by the author while attending the International Coal Conference in October of 1963. The general economy of the country is considered, and the requirements for coking coal are outlined. Statistics and comments on production and consumption are then given, with accompanying cost figures, and the characteristics of Japanese coal mining are compared with those of Canada. Mining methods and underground transportation are covered, with emphasis on undersea mining. Finally, a description is given of a visit to the Miike colliery, the largest in Japan. I T was my privilege to attend the International Coal Conference held in Tokyo in October, 1963, to meet many prominent members of the Japan Coal Association and to visit one of the major coal fields. THE Dome ore-bodies are more or less isolated and are mined. by shrinkage stoping. An interwoven system of veins is mined at Hollinger '.1.nd requires close filling. Deep mining is the problem at McIntyre. Dome ore contains a large amount of free gold, which is recovered on blankets. An all-cyanide flow-sheet is \lSed in the Hollinger mill. Flotation concentration is an important feature of McIntyre mill operation. Therefore, these three mines afford an unusual opportunity to compare gold mining and milling methods. The purpose of this paper is to describe the conditions existing at the Dome, Hollinger, and McIntyre mines and to outline the mining and milling practice at each property. Figures 3, 4, 5, and 7 are reproduced from the Canadian Mining ]011rna/, September, 1935 (Young, A. W., Mining at Hollinger), and Figures 8 to 11 from the Engineering and Mining Journal, November, 1933 (Keeley, D. E., Development and Mining at McIntyre). "In the changing global market scenario for raw materials for the steel industry, a number of novel iron- and steelmaking process technologies are being developed to provide the steel companies with economically-sustainable alternatives for iron- and steel-making. In addition, the steel industry is also focusing on reduction of energy consumption as well as green-house gas (GHG) emissions to address the crucial subject of climate change. In this context, it is important to assess these critical issues for the alternate iron- and steelmaking technologies that have been developed. This paper presents a comparative evaluation of energy-efficiency and GHG emissions for some selected iron- and steelmaking technologies that are being considered for implementation. In this work, Hatch’s G-CAP™ and En-MAP™ tools that were developed with the main objective of quantifying and qualifying the potential energy savings and CO2 abatement within the iron and steel industry, were employed in the evaluation conducted. INTRODUCTIONThe iron and steel industry continues to transform itself and evolve in the ever-changing global market place – the raw material scenario is constantly changing with respect to quality and quantity (availability), there is stiff competition in both global and local markets, and there is increasing pressure to address global climate change issues, especially since the steel industry is highly energy- and carbonintensive. There is growing importance of steel production in developing countries such as China and India – this means that the steel industry in these countries will play an important role in defining and shaping the future of the industry.Climate change is expected to present new risks to the steel industry with respect to ensuring a sustainable business. Legislators are proposing to limit GHG emission by placing an implicit price on CO2 emission - market-based “cap and trade”, carbon tax etc.. In this scenario, it is important for the steel companies to reduce exposure to climate-related risks and at the same time, find business opportunities within these risks. Thus, there is a need to strategically manage the climate change risks; the key steps to strategically manage climate change risks are presented in Table 1[1]."

The objective of the research conducted and presented herein was to determine the effect of pre-established free gas saturation on the sweep efficiency of an isolated inverted five-spot well pattern. The investigation concluded that the ultimate recovery of an isolated inverted five-spot may be slightly increased by establishing a free gas saturation prior to water flooding; however, of more significance is the extreme deviation of the pattern's performance after water break-through from that commonly obtained from developed well patterns. The rapid "water-out" characteristic common to both linear floods and floods conducted in developed well patterns was not evidenced in the isolated inverted five-spot. Instead, the wells continued to produce oil long after breakthrough until ultimate areal sweep efficiencies of four, five, and six hundred percent were obtained prior to the water-oil ratio becoming excessive.

"The Alberta and Northwest Chamber of Mines was founded in Edmonton, Alberta in 1935. The organization represented private sector mining explorers and developers in the province and north west Canada. The Chamber aided and abetted the establishment of the two territorial mining associations. Because of corporate human resource department creation by north of sixty mine operators, the Chamber refocused on Alberta and broadened its perspective to include activities beyond mining. In 1977 the name changed to the Alberta Chamber of resources. The slogan (in more modern terms vision, mandate, goal, etc) remains as Orderly Development of Canada's Resources.The sixty-three year reputation of the Chamber, built on volunteer rather than staff contribution, is the principal reason for any success. The key has truly been the reputation, not an image, as all activities have been solution oriented.This presentation provides insight into the structure and methodology applied by the organization, and reviews some of the successes and failures during the period 1985 to present. The history and experience of early companies in the Islands is illustrated by the typical transactions of Trans-Western from 1959 to date. Trans-Western had entered into farmout agreements with companies strong enough to carry out at least the required minimum exploratory work and then such development as might be warranted. The farmee companies were required to make deposits to guarantee work performance during the first period of validity, i.e. the first 3 years of the 12-year life of the permits, and at the rate of 5 cents per acre. At that time, a good deal of geology was available, as a result of extensive exploration that had been carried on by the Geological Survey of Canada and other geological enterprises, with field parties travelling over and camping on all of those Islands. Trans-Western's farmees then selected, from Trans-Western's priority on 13.5 million acres, what they believed were the lands most prospective of producing large oil and gas discoveries, and, having the right to trim off acreage which they considered less prospective, thereby reducing the acreage of Trans-Western and its farmees to in excess of 5.5 million acres. The farmees then commenced a 3-year program carrying out geological exploration to the required minimum of 5 cents per acre, and with some permanent and many mobile camps.

"The electrolytic tankhouse at CCR was recognized by management as lagging behind modem refineries in terms of productivity, energy efficiency and controls. The operation was also burdened by high maintenance costs of cells, floors and electrolyte recirculation systems.A bench marking program was started in 1986 to evaluate processes and other technology by visiting major copper refineries in North America, Europe and Japan. The basic principles necessary to optimize the operation were defined, and a program calledCCR 2000 was prepared for approval of the necessary capital investments.This paper describes the results obtained to date and outlines the remaining work to complete the modernization program, in particular, the control of electrolytes, the elimination of the Baltimore groove and studies to modernize the stripping operation or adopt permanent cathode technology.IntroductionThe CCR Refinery of Noranda Copper Smelting and Refining (Noranda Minerals Inc.) , in Montreal East, is one of the world 's largest custom copper and precious metal refineries with a capacity to refine 350000 tonnes of copper per year. The silver refinery, which treats the copper tankhouse anode slime, foreign slime and precious metal ingots, produces 800 000 kg of silver, 26 000 kg of gold and 3800 kg of platinum-palladium concentrate annually. Copper anodes are received from the Horne Smelter at Rouyn-Noranda, Quebec, and Mines Gaspe Division in Murdochville, Quebec. CCR also refines anodes from Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting Co. Ltd. in FIin Flon, Manitoba, and remelts anode scrap along with blister and purchased copper scrap ."

"Rock masses comprised of stiff inclusions in softer matrix are common in various geological environments. The heterogeneity and multi-scale nature of these materials make the evaluation of their mechanical properties a challenging task, which cannot be accomplished using conventional laboratory tests and composite mixture rules. We employ the homogenization method to estimate the mechanical properties of geological materials with inclusions. The homogenization method solves the equations of elasticity on the material (microscopic) scale for a unit cell subjected to unit strains under periodic boundary condition. The micro-scale elasticity equations are solved using the Finite Elements Method, and are in turn used to obtain the structure scale (macroscopic) material matrix.In this research, Finite Element models for unit cells with spherical and ellipsoidal inclusions were developed. Using the unit cells, a parametric study of the geometrical and statistical microscopic properties of the material composites was performed. The following parameters were studied: volumetric ratio, Young’s modulus ratio, size-distribution of inclusion and inclination angle of inclusions. The main purpose of the parametric study was to study the deviation from isotropy as a function of the aforementioned parameters.It was found that for volumetric ratio of 5%-40%, the deviation from isotropy increases, as the volumetric ratio of inclusions increases. For spherical inclusions, most of the cases studied exhibit quasiisotropic behaviour; whereas ellipsoidal inclusions exhibit considerable deviation from isotropy. The inclination of the ellipsoidal inclusions enlarges the deviation from isotropy (9% at random orientation and 26% at 0°)."

"An evaluation of mineralization in the Goosly- Owen Lake area of central British Columbia is the result of a comprehensive geochemical study of rock samples obtained from a regional geological survey. The dispersion of metals in country rocks about a line of Tertiary intrusions suggests that these igneous bodies may be genetically related to known sulphide replacements, disseminations and vein deposits. The geochemical investigation is based on the determination of 12 elements from samples gathered from more than 800 scattered field stations. To assist processing and interpretation, the data are subjected to a variety of statistical procedures, including correlation of the elements, factor analysis, clustm• analysis and computer contouring of the elements. Some practical applications of rock geochemistry in regional exploration are indicated."

Conventional casting at low pouring temperature was employed to produce semisolid metal, SSM, billets of A356 Alloy. The deformation behavior of the as-cast SSM billets was studied using parallel plate compression viscometry. The compression tests were carried out at different applied pressures, and fractions solid. The rheological studies were conducted assuming the SSM slurry behaving like Newtonian and non Newtonian fluids respectively. "The precursor of In2O3 was prepared by hydrolysis precipitation/hydrothermal method using In(NO3)3 solution as the feed material and ammonium hydroxide as the neutralizing agent. The crystallinity, morphology and particle size of the products were characterized by SEM, XRD, BET and LPSA. The results showed that the hydrolysis product consists of an aggregate of cubic In(OH)3 particles with a short rod morphology. In the hydrothermal process, the structure, morphology and size of the particles changes through the mechanisms of Ostwald ripening and phase transition, respectively. When the hydrothermal temperature was less than 280 ?, the Ostwald ripening process took place, which changed the morphology of the particles from short rods to cuboids through dissolution-recrystallization. When the hydrothermal temperature was higher than 280 ?, the processes of Ostwald ripening and phase transition took place successively. Firstly, the morphology of the particles changed from short rods to cuboids through Ostwald ripening, and then, the phase transition from cubic In(OH)3 to orthorhombic InOOH occurred and the morphology of the particles changed from cuboids to polyhedron. INTRODUCTIONDue to its excellent electrical conductivity and optical transparency, indium tin oxide (ITO) film has been wildly used in flat-panel display, solar cell, antistatic coating and EMI shielding (Medvedovski et al., 2008). Indium oxide powder is one of the fundamental materials for preparing ITO film. Along with the development of ITO targets of both high density and large size, high quality indium oxide powders, such as single phase, nano-size, spherical morphology and mono-disperse, have been in high demand (Nakashima and Kumahara, 2002; Betz et al., 2006; Kim et al., 2007). The main preparation methods for indium tin oxide or indium oxide powders include chemical precipitation (Nam et al., 2001; Xu and Yu, 2007), melt atomizing-combustion (Chen et al., 2000) and spray pyrolysis (Ogi et al., 2009). Among them, chemical precipitation has been preferred, since it is simple, easy to control and suitable for industrial scale-up. In chemical precipitation method, indium oxide powders were prepared through the following steps: firstly, indium hydrate precursor was precipitated from an indium salt solution by neutralization using an alkali, such as ammonia; and then, indium oxide (In2O3) powders can be obtained from the precursor through calcination (Li et al., 2006), or solvothermal method (Lee and Choi, 2005), or hydrothermal processing/roasting (Xu et al., 2005; Chen and Li, 2007), respectively. However, the indium oxide powders obtained by direct roasting are polycrystalline, dispersable with a wide size distribution (Liao, 2006). The disadvantages of the solvothermal method are high cost, complicated after-treatment processes, as well as bad performances of the powders (Udawatte and Yanagisawa, 2000). Therefore, among three methods of obtaining indium oxide from the hydrolysis precursor, the hydrothermal process/roasting method is the most feasible to synthesize high quality In2O3 powder with uniform crystallinity and size (Kim et al., 2002; Zhu et al., 2004; Xu et al., 2005; Xu et al., 2005; Chen and Li, 2007; Seetha et al., 2009). However, current research on hydrothermal process-roasting method has been limited to the synthesis of a certain ITO or In2O3 powders under specific conditions. A systematic study on the phase transition, as well as the change of the morphology and size of the particles in the hydrothermal process is still missing. In this paper, the effects of hydrothermal processing on the mineralogy, morphology and size of products were investigated. The results showed that the evolution of crystal structure, morphology and size in the hydrothermal process was affected through the mechanisms of Ostwald ripening and phase transition successively. These results are novel and have guidance for improving the hydrothermal process for In2O3"

"The region discussed comprises approximately eight million acres spreading across the Arctic Circle in Yukon and North West Territories.Encouraged by four years of surface geological and geophysical work, which strongly suggested that suit-able conditions existed for the entrapment of oil and gas, a decision was reached to drill. In due course two holes were drilled; Eagle Plains No. 1 drilled to 9589 in 1957-8 and Western Minerals Chance No. 1 spudded in 1959 is being deepened this year.Thick sections of sedimentary rocks occur on both sides of the Richardson Mountains, however, most of our activities have been concentrated to date on the west side in the Eagle Plains basin. Here are found stratigraphic units ranging from Precambrian to Tertiary age. The drilling of the two exploratory wells proved the presence of these strata at depth and have confirmed the presence of promising structures. A geological cross-section across Eagle Plains presents an interpretation of these conditions.Physical and engineering aspects of exploration in the northern Yukon and North West Territories are de-pendent largely upon seasons and transportation. Reconnaissance gravity and surface geologic mapping by air presents no serious problems. However, seismic operations on the ground are greatly affected by the season, presence of permafrost and mobility of equipment.The actual drilling of the hole may well be the simple part of a wildcat undertaking once equipment and supplies are on location. Over-all planning, assembling supplies, transporting equipment and personnel seems to be the real job. Serious consideration must be given to per-ma-frost effect in the drilling pro-gram and on surface installations as well.Programming for -the various exploration activities should be under-taken well in advance of the actual doing. Considerable extra costs may be the results of crash programs. Costs are high, and the rewards uncertain. Economic evaluation is based •on the long term outlook."

"A new hydrometallurgical process for nickel extraction from a low grade laterite ore such as limonite has been developed by RIST and POSCO. This POSCO Nickel Extraction Process (PosNEP) consists of five main processes: ore reduction using hydrogen as a reductant; acid leaching at atmospheric pressure and temperature; cementation by the use of reduced-ore seed; production of the main product such as ferronickel or a high purity nickel compound; and production of by-products such as cobalt and iron in the forms of cobalt sulfate and iron oxide. In addition, hydrogen produced in acid leaching and hydrochloric acid regenerated in pyrohydrolysis for iron oxide production can be reused in the process, which makes PosNEP more cost-effective. The performance of PosNEP has been proven through pilot tests, showing that this process is economically and technically viable. In this paper, basic concepts and detailed test results of PosNEP are shown.INTRODUCTIONNickel has been extracted from two types of ore, sulfide and oxide ore. Nickel and cobalt usually occur together in the ores. The principal ore mineral of the sulfide is pentlandite, (Ni,Fe)9S8, which is easily beneficiated to produce sulfide concentrates(Moats & Davenport, 2014). These concentrates are usually treated by smelting and converting to make a matte. The produced matte is then purified through either hydrometallurgical or pyrometallurgical processes to produce high-purity nickel. In general, this process for sulfide ore has been known as a more cost-effective process than that for oxide ore.The oxide ore is laterite comprised of two different ore types, saprolite and limonite. The main nickel-bearing mineral of saprolite is nickeliferrous garnierite,(Mg,Ni)6Si4O10(OH)8, and that of limonite is nickeliferrous goethite (Fe,Ni)O·OH ore (Moats & Davenport, 2014). Since the saprolite has high contents of nickel and slag formers (MgO and SiO2) and a low content of iron, it tends to be treated by a pyrometallurgical smelting process such as calcination and electric furnace techniques to produce ferronickel for use in stainless steel. In this process, the cobalt in the ferronickel does not have any economic value."

This is the second review of developments in coal mining engineering (see C.I.M .M. Transactions, Vol. LI, 1948, pp. 262- 264) and covers the period from October, 1948, to January, 1950. Mechanization The period under review was characterized by the intensive development of appliances providing for complete mechanization of coal-face operations. A variety of machines are being evolved or have already been placed on the market which embody the principle of &apos;continuous mining&apos;. This trend can be observed in all coal producing countries. In the United States, two continuous mining machines have been developed for entry and room application and by the end of 1 949 were being used in a number of mines. These are the Joy Continuous Miner in which the coal is ripped from the face by means of multiple cutter chains, and the Jeffrey Colmol employing cutters on rotating arms for chipping the coal from the face. The Joy machine is made in tw6l models, 34-in. and 48-in. high and designed for a range of seam thicknesses from 3-ft. -t-in. to 4-ft. 6-in. and from 4-ft. 6-in. to 8ft., respectively. Some experience has been gained with this machine and accounts of its performance are already appearing in the technical literature. The Jeffrey-Colmol has a more limited range of working height. The first model, 38-in. high, was designed for seams about 4 feet in thick11ess but more recently the 28-in. low model has been placed on the market for seams 2-ft. 6-in, to 3-ft. 4-in. in thickness. Conventional mobile loading machines of the gathering-arm type are continuing to yield high production under suitable conditions, and improvements or modifications of the basic principle are embodied in new machines as, for example, the Jeffrey mobile (conveyor) loader with extensible (gathering-arm) head developed for conveyor mining.

The utilization of natural deposits of salt is one of the oldest industries in Alberta. In 1820, Sir James Richardson visited Salt river, and in the same year D. W. Harmon states chat "clown Slave river, there are several places, where almost any quantity of excellent dean white salt may be taken, with as much ease as sand along the seashore. From these places the greater part of the northwest is supplied with this valuable article". This reference is to the salt chat occurs around springs on Salt river at the northern boundary of the Province. This and other occurrences will be described later in this paper. It is not on account of the development of salt and gypsum in Alberta chat this paper has been prepared, but rather to draw attention to the widespread distribution of salt-bearing and gypsum-bearing rocks, and to the stratigraphic importance of these rocks . The origin of the deposits of salt, gypsum, anhydrite, and dolomite is discussed, and the economic significance of these minerals is considered. There is no salt production reported from Alberta in 1928.

"Enormous deposits of gypsum of exceptionally high grade are readily accessible in southwestern Newfoundland. Coming large-scale production from one of these is resulting in renewed interest in deposits which have been known for more than a hundred and twenty years. General stratigraphy and structure of the Carboniferous rocks in which the gypsum occurs are de-scribed. The stratigraphic position of the basal gypsum-anhydrite zone is described. This massive evaporite horizon, which reaches a thickness of about 1,0001 feet, appears at Fishels-Heatherton, where it is largely undeveloped, and again on the nose of an anticline east of Flat bay, where a present production of 20,000 to 40,000 tons per annum is soon to be expanded to make it one of Canada's major producers. Detailed descriptions are given of the several types of gypsum, the relation of the gypsum and anhydrite, and the distribution of sodium chloride in the evaporite beds, and the bearing of all these on the origin of the gypsum are discussed. Brief reference is made to relation to world markets, mining and transportation, grade, and reserves."

The High Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) is gaining acceptance in the mineral processing industry and has become a competitive technology in reducing the specific energy consumption in Mineral processing plants. The amount of samples required for HPGR amenability testwork and HPGR wear tests is usually high and often cannot be available at early stage of projects were only a few drill cores are available. Although HPGR was initiated from small scale piston die compression tests, the development of small scale piston die test to predict the performance of HPGR has been slow. The objectives of this paper was to present the designs, operating procedure of piston-die press and operating conditions which have resulted in similar particle size distribution obtained from a piston die test and HPGR Labwal unit starting from the same feed size distribution. Testwork were conducted using a 2 MN piston-die press and a Labwal HPGR unit on major South African ore types, viz, gold, platinum and iron ores. The results obtained show that piston-die test can generate data to predict energy consumption, product size distribution, and even to evaluate the edge effect.
