"Most of the Paleozoic section of the Williston Basin is a thick accumulation of numerous carbonate to evaporite, shallowing upward, cyclic sequences. These sediments were deposited in broad epeiric seas, and the deposition of the evaporite facies marked the final stage of each cycle. Many of the sequences display a pervasive replacement dolomite in the uppermost portion of the carbonate units. This secondary dolomitization is, at least in part, an early diagenetic event, synchronous with evaporite deposition.The inception of evaporite precipitation resulted in the seepage of a dense, Mg-rich brine into the underlying sediment. The heavy brine moved down the gentle regional dip displacing the more normal marine interstitial pore fluid and dotomitized the primary calcitic sediments en route. The supply of Mg-ions decreased away from the source, and correspondingly, the degree of dolomitization decreased and larger crystals formed because of slower nucleation at fewer sites.The seepage refluxion of dolomitizing brines gave rise to the frequently observed textural variation of cryptocrys talline, impervious dolomite grading into a finely sucrosic, permeable dolomite down-dip. This diagenetic facies change provides the critical up-dip barrier for potential hydrocarbon reservoirs. The lateral pool boundaries are controlled by either structural relief or a similar diagenetic facies change. The reservoirs are capped by the tight evaporites.Hydrocarbon production is attained from diagenetic traps in the Mississippian Oungre Zone and the Ordovician Red River 'C' Zone . Reservoir creation and the pooling mechanism are the result of dolomitization by the seepage refluxion of dense, Mg-rich brines beneath restricted, hypersaline lagoons. When formulating an exploration/ exploitation program for these oil prone horizons, it is essential to understand the complete geological history in order to establish where the reservoirs will be found and to define the areal extent of each accumulation."

Gold is considered the most inert of all metallic elements, but the metal can show catalytic activity when prepared by specific techniques. Preparation techniques being used to prepare gold catalysts systems mainly involve precipitation methods incorporating gold compounds or complexes. This paper introduces a totally different method for the preparation of gold-based heterogeneous catalysts that can be used for oxidation and reduction reactions, as well as electrocatalysts. The method involves alloying of gold with a less noble metal, such as aluminium, to form a gold-containing intermetallic precursor. AuAl2 was produced by melting gold and aluminium together in a vacuum arc furnace under a protective atmosphere. The aluminium is then dissolved from the AuAl2 precursor by means of NaOH to produce a highly porous gold structure. The paper also reports on a method of incorporating transition metal oxide(s) with the porous gold to form an active heterogeneous catalyst. Promoter elements can also be melted with AuAl2 to improve catalytic activity. Alloying has the advantage that the promoter element can be in contact on atomic level with the gold. In-situ xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies have also been done on the porous gold catalysts to further clarify the CO oxidation mechanism on gold-based catalysts.

The Cadia mine is shifting from the open pit operation to the Cadia East underground block cave. The resulting increase in milled tonnes and the decrease in fines production through shifting to block caving require an increase of over 25% in installed power. This expansion is being accomplished via the installation of up-front crushing and HPGR milling of the ore, with the SAG mill receiving a secondary crushed feed. This design, criteria and rationale for selection is presented. Over the coming years, the mine will further expand capacity. The target is to accomplish this with minimal addition of installed power or use of fresh water. This presents a challenge that epitomizes the future constraints on our resource dependent and intensive industry. The approach and proposed options to this longer-term expansion are also presented.

"This presentation will provide information and facts on the drilling and blasting within a frozen shaft using a full face methodology. The Author will briefly discuss the history of the sinking of a frozen shaft in Saskatchewan, the challenges faced, and the solutions delivered. The case study will include a discussion describing the series of events that led to the decision to adopt a full face blasting methodology. The case study will describe key elements such as the drilling pattern, hole size and depth, explosive products and blast vibration monitoring systems. INTRODUCTION During the shaft sinking process at a project in Saskatchewan, it was recommended that a drill & blast benching method be utilized. Following an evaluation of the site, the geological conditions proved amenable to a ground freezing system that would stabilize the rock formations and prevent inflows of water into the shaft (Table 1).The shaft sinking process required that the ground surrounding the proposed shaft be frozen by drilling several near vertical freeze holes radially at a specified distance from the edge of the proposed shaft excavation. This would allow for the circulation of a chilled brine solution down the freeze holes. The circulation is achieved by means of stainless steel pipes encased within each other to provide a delivery and return conduit for the brine (Figure 1). As a result of this periphery freezing, the ground within the shaft excavation is also predominately frozen.The finished internal diameter of the shaft was 5.5 meters with varying overall excavation diameters to facilitate different liner designs used for various rock formations. For the most part, the fully unsupported/unfinished excavated diameter of the shaft varied from 6.9 meters to 8.5 meters depending on the zone excavated. The challenge was that the proposed drill and blast excavation method posed a significant risk due to the potential to damage the freeze wall and pipes during blasting. The decision was made to commence the excavation through mechanical excavation (i.e. chip and cut) methods then change to a drill and blast method utilizing a split benching design. Through this process, the team encountered five main challenges: 1. Sub-horizontal geological structures and slips that affected blasting performance and sometimes resulted in a sloping surface to the top of the bench; 2. Confined working area for the crews and equipment due to a limited work area as a result of utilizing the split (half) bench drill and blast methodology; 3. Mechanical chipping and cutting of the one-meter buffer zone to the final shaft diameter; 4. Crews working on extremely slippery uneven frozen rock and ice surfaces, which affected safety and efficiency; 5. Establishing a blast vibration monitoring system to determine if the drilling and blasting of the full shaft excavation diameter were acceptable."

Uranium mining remains controversial in many parts of the world, especially in a post-Fukushima context, and often in areas with significant uranium resources. Although nuclear proponents point to the relatively low carbon intensity of nuclear power compared to fossil fuels, opponents argue that this will be eroded in the future as ore grades decline and energy and greenhouse gas emissions (GGEs) intensity increases as a result. Invariably both sides fail to make use of the increasingly available data reported by existing uranium mines through sustainability reporting ? allowing a comprehensive assessment of recent trends in the energy and GGEs intensity of uranium production, as well as combining this with reported mineral resources to allow more comprehensive modelling of future energy and GGEs intensity. In this study, detailed data is reported for numerous uranium mines around the world, including production, energy and GGEs intensity and reported mineral resources. An important aspect included ? arguably unique and never before published ? is the relationship between ore grade and recovery, which is crucial in future projections of uranium mining. Overall, the paper shows the importance of continuing to improve reporting by the uranium sector as well as the ability to analyse key trends and future projections in energy and GGEs intensity of uranium production.

Geostatistical concepts are often difficult for students to understand, even those with a strong mathematical background. One of the main problems is the link between the variation of the parameter value in space or time and the calculated experimental semivariogram. Another challenge is differentiating between directional and omnidirectional semivariograms and their interpretation. For these reasons, interactive tools were developed based on the free public domain software R. The use of these interactive tools is limited to educational situations only (i.e., to visualize basic concepts). The interactive modules can be accessed at www.bwk.kuleuven.be/geostatistics.

"Two continuous coal zones occurring in a 2500f t (762 m) thick section of the Upper Carboniferous Pictou Group (Westphalian C and D) have been encountered in five offshore wells drilled f or oil and gas in the Gulf of St. Lawrence. They correlate, by means of fossil spores, with thick coals of the Mabou and Inverness coalfields situated at the eastern margin of the Basin. Therefore, the presence of a large submarine coalfield of at least 18000 sq mi. (46 620 km'] is indicated. This compares with an estimated size of 14 000 sq mi. (36260 km' ) for the Sydney Coal Basin.Accessibility is provided only by the small onshore parts of the Mabou and Inverness fields, because farther offshore the coals lie too deep to be mined (below 4 OOO f t ([ 219 m)).Two near-shore coal exploration wells indicate that at Mabou Mines the younger Inverness coals occur at a mineable depth to at least 5 km from land. A structure contour map of this area shows a reserve of 125 million tons in two Inverness equivalent seams that are 8.5 ft (2.6 m) and 4.5 ft (f.4 m) thick. The Mabou coals, however, reach too great a depth close to shore to possess mineable resources.A structure contour map of the Inverness submarine area, based on mine data and one off shore seismic profile, indicates inferred mineable resources of 160 million tons, in two seams that are 7ft (2.1 m) and 4.5 ft (f.4 m) thick . A detailed deep seismic survey will be necessary to substantiate the structure and resource estimates"",Maceral and coal quality percentage diagrams of five column samples of these seams (the 7 Foot and 13 Foot Seams of Inverness Equivalents) show a bright banded coal, high in reactive macerals, which will produce a weak coke unsuitable f or metallurgical purposes. A thermal coal with a rank of H. V. ""B"" Bituminous (0.64% Ro) is present, averaging 12000 btu llb (6 660 kcai/kg), 10% ash and 6% sulphur, of which 60 to 80% is derived from pyrite.Microlithotype profiles of the major Mabou and Inverness coals show characteristic successions that can be used f or seam identification and proved valuable f or structural interpretations.The time of faulting in the major fracture zone on the eastern margin of the Gulf of St. Lawrence Basin has been deduced from coal rank variations. The mucking out of sub-level headings by slusher and by Autoloader is described, and the performance and costs of both methods are compared. The introduction of the Autoloader is taken as an example to illustrate the meth-od used at the mine for evaluating the suitability of new equipment. "Carryover of caustic soda (NaOH) in the steam path caused catastrophic failure of superheater 304H stainless steel tubes in a steam generator and led to an unexpected shutdown after just five months of continuous service of petrochemical following the start of production. The cause of the failure was studied, with a focus on the formation of sigma phase in the weld joint and effect of caustic embrittlement on stress corrosion cracking (SCC). The cracks were examined at the seam weld, heat affected zone (HAZ), and Ubend areas. Hardness was measured for the base metal, HAZ, and weld metal, and microstructures were examined using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Crack initiation is attributed to gouging on the precipitated carbide at the HAZ and also the formation of sigma phase in the weld metal, as shown by energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. In addition, cracking was propagated by caustic embrittlement because of residual stresses and hammering. Finally, the characteristic feature of fracture was illustrated by SEM fractography, and consists mostly of intergranular SCC and some quasicleavage transgranular. INTRODUCTIONThree key factors are needed for the initiation and propagation of intergranular stress corrosion cracking (IGSCC): a susceptible material, a corrosive environment, and sufficient stress. Although austenitic stainless steels are susceptible to sensitization and IGSCC, they are widely used in boiler and superheater tubes because of their high corrosion resistance, high oxidation resistance, acceptable mechanical characteristics at elevated temperatures, and low cost.Sodium hydroxide is injected to neutralize acidic constituents in the steam path, but caustic can concentrate in boiler tubes and attack the surface metal (known as gouging) even traces of caustic in the steam can deposit on surfaces and cause local concentrations of several percent (ASM handbook, 1992). Not only sensitized grains but also sigma phase formed in the weld metal can initiate caustic cracking. In this research, the cause of the failure of 304H stainless steel superheater tubes in a methanol petrochemical plant in Iran was studied with a focus on the effects of caustic embrittlement on IGSCC."

"A brief history of previous mining activity on Coal Mountain, near Corbin, British Columbia, is followed by a description of the steps leading up to the resumption of mining in /974 by Byron Creek Collieries. New developments, including a preparation plant, a rail spur and a totally enclosed facility, as well as operating techniques, are also discussed. IntroductionThe Corbin Mine of Byron Creek Collieries Limited is located in southeastern British Columbia, approximately 110 air miles southwest of Calgary (Fig. I), 15 miles south of Highway 3 via a newly constructed provincial road (Fig. 2). Development of the area began on July 30, 1905, when D.C. Corbin, a prominent businessman from the northwestern U.S., and his associate E.J . Robert s, first visited the site of Coal Mountain on horseback. Coal was in great demand by railways and other industrial users, so the Corbin Coal and Coke Co. , after acquiring 15,000 acres of land in the area , began to develop a mine.F.J. Roberts was responsible for the construction of the 14-mile rail spur, the Eastern British Columbia Railway, which joined the mine to the CPR main line at the McGillivray Loop. Rail access to the mine and its developing community, Corbin, B.C., was completed in September 1908, the same year that the first underground mine began production.The Corbin Coal and Coke Co. operated six mines on Coal Mountain (Fig. 3), and production from 1908 to 1930 inclusive totalled 2,337,800 tons. This production was allocated to the mines as shown in Table 1. No.3, 4 and 6 mines were operated intermittently from 1931 to 1935."

"AbstractOver the past five years, tax rates in the Canadian mining industry have skyrocketed upward across Canada, as both federal and provincial governments have sought to increase their share of mining revenues.However, the past few years have not only brought high tax rates to the industry, but also a number of important new federal and provincial tax incentives.In large part, these incentives ~ special credits or reduction in tax for carrying out specific exploration, processing or other activities - have helped to moderate the adverse effects of the higher tax rates and have provided inducements for exploration and processing activities which might not otherwise have been undertaken.However, the effectiveness of certain of these incentives can be questioned: our over-all tax structure now consists in large part of punitively high marginal rates with some extraordinarily generous but capricious tax reductions for specific activities and may not be in the best long-term interest of either the industry or the nation.A rational tax structure, with moderate and stable tax rates, together with reasonable incentives confined to activities specifically requiring them, could be a more effective spur to investment than the present tax and incentive jungleIntroductionIN THE YEARS since federal tax reform, the mining industry in Canada has faced a continued escalation in its tax burdens as federal and provincial governments have leapfrogged each other in imposing new and higher taxes on the industry. Introduction A mechanical spring has been .defined by Wahl ( 1) as 'an elastic body whose ?primary function is? to deflect or distort under load, and which recovers its original shape when released after being distorted'. Most material bodies are elastic to some extent ? and will deform under load, but they are seldom regarded as springs since this is not their primary function. The principal applications of springs are the absorption of energy and the mitigation of shock, the support cf moving masses or the isolation of vibration, and the provision or measurement of definite loads or torques. A large number of spring types have been developed to serve these purposes and to meet the different operational requirements; they range from the large semi-elliptic leaf suspension spring to the delicate watch hairspring. The springs of most importance in machine design, however, are the helical round-wire compression or tension types. They are made in a wide variety of sizes and are used in tremendous quantities, mainly because of their low cost, their compactness, and their relatively high efficiency. Their field of application is as broad as that of machine design itself, but the bulk of production is almost certainly for suspension systems of vehicles such as automobiles, freight and passenger cars, and mine cars, and it is with the last of these applications that this paper is primarily concerned.

ABSTRACT Grinding circuits are operated in the presence of disturbances resulting from ore changes and equipment malfunctions, such as hydrocyclone overloading, worn or partly plugged apexes, surging, and internal liner detachment that may cause a loss of classification performance. Metal recovery losses in downstream leaching or flotation circuits justify the development of methods for rapid detection of hydrocyclone malfunction. Two methods are presented in this paper. The first method uses measurements from sensors available in a grinding circuit and the second uses vibration sensors installed on the individual hydrocyclones of a nest.

"HYDROGEOCHEMICAL METHODS in the Canadian Shield can be based on analyses of the following :(1) spring waters and their precipitates;(2) stream and river waters;(3) lake and muskeg waters;( 4) ground waters from drill holes, wells, faults, etc.;(5) waters issuing from diamond drill holes, faults, shear zones, etc. into mine workings and open pits; also analyses of precipitates associated With these waters.The first four can be utilized in both reconnaissance and detailed surveys. The last is suitable only for detailed work.For hydrogeochemical methods of prospecting to be effective, the following conditions must be present. 1. Natural waters must come into contact with mineral deposits and remain in contact with them long enough for the solution of detectible amounts of ore, gangue or indicator elements. 2. Dispersion patterns must be present in the hydrologic systems in order to trace the elements back to their source. These patterns may take the form of trains (e.g., increasing amounts of elements upstream toward t he source (s), Figure 1 ) or halos (e.g., increasing amounts of elements in bodies of water toward the source (s), F igures 2 and 3)."

Frother influences water recovery through control of bubble size and a chemical effect. De-coupling the two is necessary to establish the extent of the chemistry effect. A setup is described to give steady state water overflow rate (Jwo) along with measurements of bubble size into and on top of the froth. Arguing neither bubble size correlates directly with water overflow, a frother mass balance is solved to estimate the bubble surface area flux in the overflow (Sb0 ). The solution required measurement of frother concentration using TOC analysis and frother adsorption density using surface tension data. The relationship between Jwo and Sbo reveals the frother chemistry effect, quantified for discussion purposes by an equivalent water layer thickness.

Princess colliery is operated by Old Sydney Collieries, Limited, a direct descendant of the General Mining Association of London, England, which, in the first quarter of the nineteenth century, pioneered in coal mining in Nova Scotia. The coal worked is a 5 ft. 6 in. seam known generally through the Sydney coalfield as the Harbour seam but referred to locally as the Sydney Main. Entry is made by shafts, 680 feet deep, sunk in 1871 on a headland forming the northern entrance to Sydney harbour. From them extend the main roadways of the colliery, a distance of 700 feet to the shore line and a further distance of 14,700 feet in submarine areas to a total length of 15,400 feet. It was the first colliery in Nova Scotia designed to work submarine areas. Lateral development extends across a frontage of 16,000 feet and the submarine area from which the coal has been extracted is slightly over 6 square miles. There yet remains sufficient territory ahead of the workings to assure a future life to this colliery estimated at over 80 years at the current rate of production. In this area the seam dips at 6 to 7 per cent and face workings have reached a depth of 1,690 feet below the sea level. Until 1923 extraction of the coal was by room-and-pillar, followed by the drawing of the pillars. At that date the superincumbent strata had reached a thickness of 1,400 feet, resulting in heavy weighting on the roof and severe side pressure on the coal ribs. In combination with a soft, heaving pavement this created a set of conditions involving great difficulties and expense in keeping open places driven in the solid sufficiently long to permit recovery of the coal in the pillars by methods and equipment then available. The operator was forced to resort to extraction by longwall as the only economical method of winning the coal.

"The selection of materials and pre-cautionary measures for handling natural gas and condensate containing aqueous hydrogen sulphide are presented. Based on the results of a pilot production test and laboratory studies, together with several years . of operating experience, it was found that the behaviour of materials in sour gas environments can be predicted sufficiently accurately for engineering purposes.The selection of proper materials is essential for preventing sulphide-stress cracking. Where high strength materials are not required, low car-bon steel is used. Components requiring high tensile strength and hardness characteristics should be made from K-monel or properly heat-treated carbon-manganese-molybden-um and AISI 4140 steels. Welded connections are a potential source of sulphide-stress cracking. Consequently high quality welding and strict inspection are suggested as the most economical precautionary measures available.A maintenance program based,. where possible, on visual inspection of equipment and/or test spools located at strategic points should be used to follow weight loss and putting corrosion in sour gas environments. If severe weight loss or pitting corrosion is encountered, inhibitors have been found to be an effective deter-rent."

"The Gorleben salt dome has been investigated since 1979 for its suitability as a repository for the disposal of high-level radioactive wastes. The geoscientific surface exploration was followed by underground exploration of the site beginning in 1983: underground excavation work included the sinking of two shafts from 1986 to 1994, the excavation of the infrastructure area and of drifts located in the first exploration area EB1 within the following years. The exploration was interrupted for ten years from 2000 to 2010 as part of a moratorium. After the expiry of the moratorium in March 2010, the geoscientific underground exploration at the Gorleben site was resumed. The investigations were interrupted again in autumn 2012 due to a political decision. The exploration programme included extensive geoscientific investigations: geological exploration, geophysical investigations, mining exploration and mining observation, laboratory tests, in-situ geotechnical measurements, geological modelling and numerical model calculations. To analyse and interpret the results of the in-situ measurements and mining observation geomechanical, thermal and thermo-mechanical model calculations were carried out. One of the main elements of the in-situ geotechnical investigations were high-resolution geothermal measurements performed in boreholes used for geological exploration and geotechnical tests.The geothermal measurements are used to evaluate several geotechnical findings, e. g. drift closure, rock deformation, stress change, and are completed by thermal model calculations to analyse and interpret the results of in-situ measurements and mining observation. The model calculations have been carried out using the special purpose JIFE code. To consider the whole exploration mine with the adjoining host rock as well as the successive excavation of drifts and boreholes in detail a three-dimensional finite-element model was developed. The model calculations are used to analyse the cooling-off of the surrounding rock of the drifts caused by ventilation. The cooling-off of the surrounding rock is an ongoing process affecting the results of further geotechnical measurements in the near field of the drifts. To predict a realistic time and space dependent distribution of the temperature field of the host rock within the exploration area which is influenced by ventilation thermal model calculations are necessary. Comparing the calculated temperature field with the in-situ determined rock mass temperature field within the exploration area EB 1 the results show a sufficient agreement. Furthermore there is very good correspondence, both qualitatively and quantitatively, between the experimental and the calculated findings regarding the temperature profiles including the effects of excavation and ventilation of the drifts."
