To evaluate geochemical aspects of sheared zones, 35 samples of granitoid rocks from an area of shearing >5 km2at Derehamzeh, Iran were studied geochemically. Relatively unaltered samples within the shear-zone area average 38 ppm Cu, 1.45 ppm Mo, 4.6 ppb Au, 0.21 ppm Ag, <1ppm Re, 46 ppm Zn, 28.5 ppm Pb, and 0.34% S. Bleached, hydrothermally-altered samples areanomalous in Cu (>896 ppm), Au(>59.5 ppb), Ag(>24.4 ppm), Re(>1.28 ppm), Zn (>164 ppm), Pb(>218 ppm), and S(>0.9%). Some samples from bleached sheared zones that are highly anomalous in Cu (5000 ppm), Mo(23 ppm), Ag(74 ppm), and Au(200 ppb) are characterized by a typical sericitic alteration assemblage consisting of sericite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and granular quartz. The main anomalous zone extends over about 0.4 km2in the southern part of the area. The strong Cu-Mo-Au-Ag association in the sericitic shear zones suggests a possible relationship to porphyry cop-per mineralization, similar to that found in northern Chile. Further studies on drill-core samples in the southern sericitized shear zones are required to determine if more extensive porphyry-type sul?de mineralization is present.

"11.1. INTRODUCTIONA royalty is the most common form of interest retained by an owner who is disposing of his property or by a joint venturer who ceases, voluntarily or otherwise, to participate in the joint venture.1 Rarely does a non-participating party have a direct interest in the property and/or assets of a project, except during the period when a non-participating joint venturer may be having his interest diluted.2 In fact, it is most unwise to permit a non-participating party to have such an interest. It may give rise to significant problems that could prevent or substantially delay the development of an orebody and require a considerable amount of time, effort, and money to correct.3In negotiating a royalty, it is important to be aware that there is no law or convention that says, “You just don’t do that in a royalty agreement.” As with any agreement, inventiveness and flexibility on the part of the negotiator are not just assets, but virtual necessities. It is also for this reason that it is essential to read the royalty provisions, particularly the definitions, fully and carefully, especially if you are the recipient. On the other hand, if your inventiveness and flexibility cause your accountant to question the advisability of one of your ideas, pay close attention to him.4 He will, no doubt, have had experience with many royalties, and no competent professional adviser disparages a client’s ideas without good reason. Besides, he will probably be the person who will be determining the royalty or certifying the determination of it. At the very least, he will be auditing your general financial statements, which must, of course, reflect the royalty determination. Heeding his advice not only may make the determination easier but also will probably save you money in professional fees later on. Nevertheless, do not simply accept his comments or recommendations without understanding what they mean, why they have been made with respect to your royalty agreement (sometimes professionals have comments that they make as a matter of course and, even though they may be valid, you should require them to be justified to you), and how they will affect your royalty determination.It is surprising how many corporate payors insist that their standard royalty provisions5 be used as a matter of policy, thereby effectively tying the negotiator’s hands. It is even more surprising, and to professional advisers frightening, how many of the senior employees who insist that such a policy be adhered to, virtually without variation, do not know what is in the standard provisions and would be hard-pressed to explain them to a property owner. If standard provisions are appropriate, by all means use them, but do allow experienced and sensible negotiators some flexibility and make sure that everyone within the corporation who may have to use such provisions – negotiator and supervisor alike – knows what they contain and why they are as they are. For example, there are often good and convincing reasons to describe a deduction in a certain way or to include a certain specific type of deduction. On the other hand, quite often the answer to the question “why?” is that “it has always been there”; this is, or should be, an unacceptable answer. In any event, if you, as the negotiator, appear to know what you are talking about, are familiar and comfortable with your royalty provisions, and are backed up by your boss with the same words or reasoning, a property owner cannot help but be satisfied that you are knowledgeable, even if he still does not agree with your provisions. Finally, if you do use standard provisions, make sure that they are reviewed and updated regularly."

The reduction of aqueous slurries of uranyl carbonate at elevated temperature with compressed hydrogen m the presence of metal catalysts and certain organic promoters has been shown. to yield uranium dioxide. The reduction takes place in a sequence of steps. The purity and sintering properties of the dioxide make it of interest as a starting material for fuel element production. Simple control can be exercised over the surface area and oxygen/uranium ratio of the product during reduction. URANIUM dioxide for fueling atomic power reactors 1s conventionally produced as a powder by simultaneously decomposing and reducing ammonium diuranate with hydrogen in a furnace at high temperature. The Ilo Smelter Modernization Project will require treating the slag from the Peirce Smith converters in Slag Cleaning Furnaces using pig iron technology. Currently the slags from the converters show variable magnetite contents. The copper contained in this slag is recovered in Reverberatory Furnaces, where the smelting rate was improved due to the high silica content of the converter slag. Preliminary industrial tests where developed to clean the slag from converters using pig iron. The results showed that the magnetite content has a significant influence in this process. This work describes the actions that are being implemented in the converter operation to control the magnetite content in the slag in order to maintain the high copper recovery of the smelter when the new facilities are commissioned. This task will demand a strong control of both the slag chemistry and converter practices in order to get the copper recovery considered as the design criteria (~97.4%).

Introductory During the past few years, salt (sodium chloride) strata have been encountered in western Canada in a number of wells, while prospecting for oil and gas. The ever increasing number of such wells points to the presence of a vast salt basin, the boundaries of which are at present unknown. This basin extends in a northwesterly direction from a point near the United States boundary south of Regina, crosses the Saskatchewan- Alberta boundary northwest of Unity, Sask., and continues with more northerly trend to Waterways and beyond. The beds, as encountered, appear to have a general dip to the southwest of between 10 to 20 feet to the mile and a pitch along the strike to the southeast. Thus one finds the salt strata at Waterways, Alta., at 600 feet below the surface (121 feet above sea level) whereas at Radville, Sask. south of Regina, the top of the salt is at a depth of 6,643 feet below the surface (4,430 feet below sea level). Whether this is a continuous salt basin or a series of separate basins is not yet known. We do know however, that in some of the well~ more than one salt horizon occurs while in others which normally should have encountered corresponding beds, the salt strata are absent. This latter condition, however, may occur only in the southern part of Saskatchewan, where a barren area seems to come in from the southwest. In the northwestern part of the basin, on the other hand, the occurrence of the salt strata seems to be more regular and continuous, and depths at which salt should be encountered in a drill hole in this part of the basin may be predicted with a fair degree of accuracy.

Introduction During the past six seasons the writer has been engaged in semi-detailed investigations on the coal areas lying along the front of the Rocky mountains between the Brazeau river and the Smoky River Coal Reserve (see Map, Figure 1). The purpose of this paper is to present some observations pertaining to the stratigraphy and structure of the district, touching especially upon the lithological units into which the Lower Cretaceous sediments have been divided, the thicknesses of the formations at different localities, the number, thicknesses and horizons of the principal coal seams, and the structural conditions which exist in the various fields.

Flow studies have been conducted on nickel-water suspensions in a 1in.-diam., 42-ft.-long transparent lab-oratory pipeline at concentrations of up to 25 per cent, by volume, and slurry velocities of up to 15 ft/sec. The average size of the nickel powder was approximately 150 mesh (106J.L). Three flow regime were noted. At the highest velocities, i.e., above 10 ft/;sec., where the concentration distribution through the vertical diameter was most uniform, pressure gradients could be correlated with the Durand-Condolios equation (7,8). An intermediate region, i.e., from 7 ft/sec. to10 ft/sec., could be distinguished, the lower velocity limit being that at which nickel particles began to deposit. This region was also marked by decreasing pressure gradients, for a given concentration, as the velocity was reduced. The upper velocity limit in this region was also uniquely defined in that the friction factor for any nickel concentration was the same as that for water. In the third regime, below about 7 ft/sec

"At the San Manuel mine (Arizona, USA), in-situ copper leaching of a copper porphyry deposit was carried out from 1986 to 1999 during underground and open-pit mining. In 1993–1994, well¬field testing of the supergene zone, composed primarily of chrysocolla and copper-rich clay minerals, led to estimates that 52% of the acid-soluble copper (ASCu) could be recovered during in-situ leaching; however, the actual recovery from zone 6, which had the longest leach history, was approximately 42%. Comparing drillcore assay data from holes drilled before and after leaching also indicated an approximate recovery of 42%. Abstract Following discovery on the Giant property of very promising gold deposits, some of which terminate against the steeply-dipping West Bay fault, a geological study was initiated co locate possible faulted extensions of the ore. Geological mapping revealed that the ore and the shear zones to which the ore is confined are older than the fault and therefore subject co displacement by it. It also disclosed several diabase dykes which seem co provide the best basis for determining the fault movement. After applying various techniques co determine their strikes and dips, the dykes were used as structural markers and it was estimated that, subject co certain possible errors, the movement on the fault was 16,140 feet (3.06 miles) south and 1,570 feet (0.297 miles) down on the west side relative co the ease. Evidence supporting this conclusion was obtained when subsequent deep diamond-drill holes intended to test the hypothesis cut an ore-bearing major shear zone which, so far as can be determined, is nearly identical with its present correlative on the Giant property. Introduction The fault under consideration follows a northerly trend past the west side of the original settlement of Yellowknife, which is situated 600 miles north of Edmonton and 400 miles from the Northern Alberta Railway terminus at Waterways, Alberta. The mining properties chiefly concerned include the southern part of the Giant claims, on the east side of the fault, and the Con-Rycon-Demelt claims, on the west side, 3Y2 miles to the south. Geological data were also obtained from the eastern part of the A. Y.E. property, which lies south of the Giant claims, and from the Negus, Meg, Yellorex, and Kam properties, which are south and southeast of the Con-Rycon-Demelt claims. Recognition of the major faults in the Yellowknife Bay area, including the West Bay fault which appears to be the greatest, resulted from the work of Dr. A. W. Jolliffe (McGill University, formerly of the Geological Survey of Canada) in 1935 and subsequent years. It has been stated with little exaggeration that these faults rank with the largest known steeply-dipping dislocations of the earth&apos;s crust. In the winter of 1939, a mineralized shear zone named the Creek Vein was found on the Giant property. It was noticed that the space relationship between the new shear zone and a body of quartz-feldspar porphyry is roughly the same as that between the Con C-4 shear zone and a body of acidic flows lying north of the Con property. Coupling this relation with the assumption that the movement along the fault is dominantly horizontal, it was postulated that the Giant shear zone represented the faulted extension of the Con C-4 shear.

Abstract -The Molopo Farms Complex is a major, layered ultramafic/mafic, early Proterozoic intrusion which is totally covered by sediments of the Karoo and Kalahari Formations and situated in southern Botswana and northeastern South Africa. The approximately 3000 m thick, generally fine- to medium-grained ultramafic and mafic cumulates are intrusive into equivalents of Transvaal Supergroup sediments and lavas. Multiphase deformation resulted in tilting and segmentation of the Complex into individual tectonic blocks. Sr isotopes document at least two chemically distinct parental liquids which interacted in a complex manner to form an approximately 1000 m thick rhythmically layered succession which straddles the ultramafic/mafic boundary. Repeated mixing resulted in a complex cryptic layering pattern and numerous sulfide-enriched layers which contain significant PGE +Au concentrations.

In order to make increased use of automation in copper smelting, it is evident that a useful first step .world be the accurate determination of the copper end point in the converter operation. After laboratory tests, the copper end points in a copper converter at Gaspe Copper Mmes Ltd. were determined without reference to melt samples or other observations. The results indicated that the rapid measurement of the S02 level in the gas released from the converter has potential as a new and independent method of determining the copper end point in converter operation.

Kaiser Resources Ltd. owns and operates a 5-million-tonper- year open-pit and hydraulic coal mine near Sparwood in southeastern British Columbia. Since 1969, Kaiser has maintained a field-scale reclamation program dedicated to the reclamation of disturbances associated with past and present mining and exploration activities . Since that time, over 1400 acres have been treated using modified forestry and agricultural techniques with encouraging results.

The continuous improvement in aluminum industry over the last years has increased metal output at lower cost. The potlining plays an important role in this regard due to high cost involved and more recently in its environmental aspects. In order to increase potlife and thus minimize the aluminum cash cost, a systemic approach is needed, through investigating the main cathode failure mechanisms by using a pot autopsy as a powerful tool, and then making the necessary chances to achieve extended potlife. In addition, preheating and pot start-up may also damage the cathode if not performed with an appropriate technique or even if the lining materials are not specified correctly, among other factors. All these aspects will be presented and discussed in this paper. Increased potlife, especially now that the current is reaching values up to 300kA, will allow aluminum plants to match their goals more efficiently at lower costs.

The paper describes the advanced grinding control system implemented at Newmont Ahafo gold mine, Ghana in 2009 and 2010. It shows how the different components of the Advanced Process Control (APC) system cooperate for increasing plant performance. The SABC circuit processes hard rock from different pits mixed with a variable proportion of oxides. The control strategy is designed to address specific disturbances, including start/stops of pebble crushers, unavailability of oxides, changes in rock size distribution resulting from segregation in the stockpile, and changes in ore type and hardness. The system consists of an expert system per se with extensive use of fuzzy logic, supplemented by an online dynamic model of the process used as a soft sensor, a VisioRock? rock size measurement system over SAG mill feed before addition of recycled pebbles, and an AudioMill? system to analyze the SAG mill sound and detect impacts on liners. All these components are embedded in the same OCS© software platform, which, among other benefits, makes it easy to support the entire system remotely. The paper details the physical constraints and the variables that are manipulated. It describes the control strategy and the contribution of each component of the system. It also describes the project implementation and the performance of the system. In addition to a strong involvement and support of management, the very good acceptance of the operators has been facilitated by the remote access system that made it possible to immediately modify the system each time it was needed during the baby sitting phase. The system made it possible to increase gold production significantly through increases in tonnage and recovery thanks to a better control of the grind size through a stabilization of the secondary ball milling circuit and an improvement of the operating conditions of the classifying cyclones.

In today?s emerging economy, pooling resources is a growing trend to reduce overall system costs. Two important resources of every maintenance department are repair shops and spare parts. In this work, we consider a system consisting of mine drills at multiple areas in a mine. In each area, a number of identical drills are operational. When a failure occurs, the defective component should be repaired in a designated repair shop. The failed component can be replaced immediately if a spare part is available. Otherwise, the drill is down until a component is repaired and put back into service. In this paper, the effect of pooling resources is examined, and the conditions under which it is beneficial to pool the resources are investigated. In addition, determining the optimal number of stand-by units, equipment or spare parts, in each case is of interest.

The zinc pressure leach plant at HBM&S&apos;s operations is now in its fifteenth year of operation. Current pressure leach operation is steady at a concentrate processing rate of around 26.5 tonnes per hour. A new cellhouse with a design capacity of 124,000 tonnes per annum and the capability of expansion of up to 154,000 tonnes per annum was commissioned in July 2001. The potential to expand the capacity of the pressure leach circuit and associated processes, as well as the purification circuit and casting plant, to meet the maximum capacity of the cellhouse has been investigated. This paper reviews current operation of the zinc plant, as well as the possibility of a capacity increase without major process modifications or major capital expenditures.

Ultrafine ferrite (UFF) grains may be produced in surface layers of plate steels using controlled intermediate cooling followed by deformation. Experiments were conducted using a 0.12 C - 1.26 Mn steel on a Gleeble 1500 hot deformation simulator. Taguchi designed experiments were used to evaluate prior austenite grain size, intermediate cooling rate, intermediate cooling temperature, intermediate hold time and amount of reduction in order to observe the effects of variables and their interactions on the final microstructure while minimizing the number of required test runs. Evaluation of resulting microstructures and mechanical properties revealed a preferred thermal and mechanical history for developing ultrafine microstructures in surface layers of plate steels. Application of the fundamental concepts of phase transformations to industrial plate rolling is considered.

The availability of mineral aggregates for construction purposes is rapidly declining through inadequate resource planning. restrictive zoning and legislation , and competing land uses. The Geological Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has undertaken to provide aggregate inventory reports for all townships designated under The Pits and Quarries Control Act, 1971, and eventually for all towns hips in heavily populated areas. The reports contain maps and recommendations for extractive zoning by municipalities; of necessity only the largest deposits are given priority recommendations. It is intended that these reports should improve the resource planning in areas underlain by large aggregate deposits. The inventory is only possible because a concentrated effort has been made to map the Quaternary geology of populated areas over the last ten years. Future needs require that we develop methods to determine the extent of poorly defined and buried aggregates and that we look for natural alternatives.

THE demand for high-quality aggregate is increasing in all phases of the construction industry and in all organizations associated with road building in Canada. The production of aggregate in Canada has increased almost continuously since the end of the war and has quadrupled since 1948. Increases during the past fifteen years can be accounted for by the expansion in all types of construction, particularly that of roads and highways. Total construction in 1959, based on preliminary estimates, has been valued at $7 billion, and an increase fore-cast for 1960 indicates optimism on the •construction horizon (1). Cement produced in Canada in 1959 amounted to 6.3 million tons. This is more than 2.5 times the 1948 production. Increased cement production indicates an increased use of concrete, and thus an increased need for aggregate. Natural sand and gravel deposits are gradually being depleted.
