"This paper is the result of a continuing investigation begun in 1953 by government geologists and mining companies. Previous work is reviewed and the development of several stratigraphic nomenclatures and correlation schemes is traced, culminating with the interim report of the Federal-Provincial Committee on Huronian Stratigraphy formed in 1966.The stratigraphy, structure and correlation of the Huronian rocks of the Blind River area and the region between Sault Ste. Marie and Sudbury are reviewed. The area is underlain by three Precambrian units: (1) the Archean greenstones and granites, (2) the Huronian sedimentary and volcanic rocks and (3) the post-Huronian intrusive rocks. The Huronian rocks, largely quartzite and conglomerate with greywackes, argillites and carbonates, were laid down in shallow water transgressing over the eroded Archean basement. Thickness and facies changes indicate a northwesterly source, northerly overlap and deposition controlled by basement topography. Polymictic conglomerates, occurring at least at three horizons, represent tillites and are associated with varvites with dropped clasts. These are best developed in the Gowganda formation, which varies from a continental glacial environment in the north to a marine glacial environment in the southeast.There were at least three phases of post-Huronian igneous activity, probably related to several periods or phases of late Precambrian deformation and metamorphism: (1) sills of Nipissing diabase and rather younger diabase dikes; (2) the Cutler Granite and Croker Island Complex; and (3) dikes of Keweenawan olivine diabase.Copper mineralization is associated with the Nipissing diabase. The uranium ores are found in pyritic quartz-pebble conglomerate near the Huronian Archean unconformity, particularly in ancient valleys; they are considered to be placer deposits modified by later events. Uranium production from the Blind River camp to the end of 1966 was 128,160,096 pounds U308 valued at $1,203,840,848 derived from 56,077,179 tons of ore grading 0.11 per cent U308.Within the Blind River and adjacent areas, future discoveries will probably be the result of costly systematic deep-drilling programs accompanied by detailed geologic studies of the type carried out by oil companies and probably computer-oriented."

Rare-earth pyrochlores, commonly exhibiting anomalously low lattice thermal conductivities, are considered as promising topcoat materials for thermal barrier coatings. However the structural origin underlying their low thermal conductivities remain unclear. In the present study, we investigated the phonon properties of a group of RE pyrochlores, Ln2Zr2O7 (Ln = La, Nd, Sm, Gd) employing density functional theory and quasi harmonic approximation. Through the relaxation time approximation (RTA) with Debye model, the thermal conductivities of those RE pyrochlores were predicted, showing good agreement with experimental measurements. The low thermal conductivities of RE pyrochlores were shown to largely come from the interference between the low-lying optical branches and acoustic branches. The structural origin underlying the low-lying optical branches was then clarified.

Photogrammetry surveys were used to document a footwall slab failure that occurred at a surface coal mine located on the eastern slope of the Rocky Mountains. Photographs taken before and after the failure provided the pre- and post-failure geometry of the slope and the failed slab. A 2D finite element model was constructed using slope profiles. The model contained joint elements that represented the bedding surface upon which the slab slid and the model was used to analyze the footwall slope. The in situ stresses, rock properties and the bedding surface shear strength and stiffness properties are discussed. The process of mining out a valley and exposing a highwall was modelled. As expected, elastic valley rebound occurred in the model, but shear stress and shear displacement reversals along the slip surface were also observed. The modelling results provided new insight into shear strength degradation that occurs when the pit floor approaches and then passes a specific point in the highwall.

Abstract Golden Manitou Mines, Limited, nine miles east of the town of Val d'Or in northwestern Quebec, are presently milling, at the rate of 1,000 tons daily, a relatively complex 3.11-phide ore and producing, in decreasing order of value, zinc, silver, gold, lead, and copper. The products are a zinc concentrate, a silver-lead-copper concentrate, and a silver-gold precipitate from cyanidation. Although several independent pre-production metallurgical investigations into the treatment of the ore were carried out, current practice is different from any of the recommended methods and, while still leaving room for improvement, is considerably more effective than earlier performance. Flow-sheet developments from the commencement of operations in 1942 are dealt with briefly, showing the reasons for making numerous changes, the shortcomings of the various schemes tried, and, finally, covering data pertinent to present-day practice. From the recovery standpoint, silver has presented the greatest difficulty. The writer's association with the Company coincided with the start of production. Characteristics of the Ore The predominant metallic minerals present in the ore, in decreasing order of their abundance, are: pyrite, sphalerite, galena and chalcopyrite, with lesser amounts of argentiferous tennantite-tetrahedrite, arsenopyrite, covellite, bornite, and chalcocite. The sphalerite is mostly light in colour, sometimes colourless, and practically free from combined iron. Some of the sphalerite is very closely associated with minor amounts of pyrite, chalcopyrite, and galena. Pyrie is abundantly disseminated as medium to fine grains; more rarely it is massive and contains occasional grains of sphalerite, galena, and chalcopyrite.

The development of trackless mining at Gaspe Copper Mines, Limited is described, showing the changes in mining method and the part played by the mobile equipment in the evolution of this highly mechanized underground operation. Comparisons of loading and hauling machines are given and an attempt is made to predict some possible future developments.INTRODUCTIONTHE PROPERTY OF GASPE COPPER MINES LIMITED is located in the Gaspe Peninsula of the Province of Quebec, 60 miles west of the village of Gaspe and 25 miles south of the St. Lawrence River. The original discovery of low-grade ore was made at Copper Mountain in 1921. Subsequent exploration revealed the richer Needle Mountain orebodies, and eventually in 1951 the decision was made by Noranda Mines to build the mining, concentrating and smelting complex (Figure 1). Construction and development of the mine was commenced in 1952 and production started in 1955."

Uranium minerals are often associated with iron minerals, and during the hydrometallurgical processing of the uranium ores, iron plays several significant roles. The presence of Fe(III) in solution promotes the oxidative acid leaching for the recovery of uranium. The control of the distribution of impurities in milling and refining is also affected by dissolved iron. When rejected from the process streams, iron usually collects other impurities and contributes to the stabilization of the wastes for final disposal. These roles of iron, as they relate to current uranium processing operations, are discussed in detail, and some broad and historical perspectives are also presented.

The Minto coal basin lies in the central part of the province of New Brunswick, near the head of Grand Lake. The village of Minto which is the centre of mining activity of the district, lies about 35 miles east of Fredericton and somewhat greater distances to the north and west of the cities of St. John and Moncton respectively. Although coal has been mined in the basin for a number of years, it was not until recently that the production became sufficient to warrant a thorough geological investigation. The summer of 1922 was spent, in accordance with in structions from the Director of the Geological Survey, in making a detailed study of the geology and coal resources of the Minto coal basin, which is covered by the Minto and Chipman map sheets, each embracing an area of 200 square miles. The present paper is a short outline of the principal results obtained in the field. The writer wishes to acknowledge the assistance cheerfully given him by the managers and officials of the various companies operating in Minto. He wishes especially to thank Mr. W. B. Evans, Manager of the Rothwell Coal Company, for assistance in the collection of fossils and for the generous supply of information relative to the early history of the coal field.

"With the increase of shaft excavation depth, the thickness of the shaft lining increases sharply. It is difficult to reduce thickness of lining effectively by improving high-strength concrete performance. The concept of the New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) is that surrounding rock plays a certain role in tunnel support. The solution should be to find the correct relationship between shaft lining thickness and rock strength, which is related with the interaction between the surrounding rock and concrete lining. The plane strain mechanics model is introduced to calculate lining thickness. Shaft lining design of Cixi Colliery in China is completed with the mechanics-based method proposed in this study. The lining design is verified through numerical simulation and field monitoring. The simulation results show that the maximum mises stress is located at the inner edge of the shaft lining. The increase of lining thickness cannot effectively reduce concrete grade. The monitoring results indicate that a lining design thickness of 900mm with C60 concrete, is safe and reliable in the shaft over 1000metres.This analytical design method can well be referenced in similar deep shaft projects.INTRODUCTION The New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM), thought to have helped revolutionize the modern tunneling method, is the most extensive design philosophy and construction principle in today's tunnel engineering. It began to attract attention in the 1960s based on the work of Ladislaus von Rabcewicz, Leopold Müller, and Franz Pacher in Austria[1]. NATM was originally developed for tunneling in depth and in high situ-stress conditions in the Alps. The history of sequential excavation was reviewed, which highlights the progress of tunnel design and construction in Europe after NATM[2]. Structural conditions were introduced into the equilibrium of tunnels in NATM, and the additional force was estimated to stabilize the excavation of the tunnel[3].From the perspective of applied mechanics, there was no accuracy theory to explain the interaction between the tunnel structure and the surrounding ground. "The processing of ore containing rare earth elements leads to the production of an impure solution of these elements. The separation of the rare earths from the impurities and the production of individual elements is usually carried out by solvent extraction. The effectiveness of the extraction conditions and of the reagents is generally tested in the laboratory. This paper deals with the processing of results from solvent extraction laboratory tests planned to generate data redundancy. A method is proposed to take advantage of the data redundancy by accounting for the pH variation during the extraction. The parallel processing of several tests also allows estimating the equilibrium constants for the extraction. The proposed method produces equilibrium constants that are more reproducible than values estimated using conventional approaches. The method is illustrated with solvent extraction tests conducted on synthetic solutions of rare earth elements.INTRODUCTIONThe processing of ores containing rare earth elements (REE) usually includes the production of a concentrate of the minerals carrying the REE. These minerals, for instance monazite and bastnäsite, contain the 14 elements from La to Lu plus yttrium and scandium. As an example monazite has the general formula of (La,Ce,Pr,Nd,Sm,Eu,Gd,Tb,Dy…Lu)PO4 with a typical lanthanum content of 20-26%, cerium content of 40-50%, praseodymium of 4-6%, neodymium of 16 to 20%, and decreasing concentrations of heavier elements (Gupta & Krishnamurthy, 2005). During the processing of a REE mineral, it is generally not possible to isolate and separate a single REE from all the rest. The mineral molecules need to be broken (usually via a heat treatment followed by leaching with a base and/or an acid) to produce an aqueous solution of the REE of the ore. After purification of the solution, the REE can be precipitated as a bulk concentrate and sold to a refinery that separates the REE into particular groups of REE such as the light versus heavy REE or into individual elements such as lanthanum, neodymium, or europium oxides to yield value-added products."

For base metal sulphides, iron rejection starts in mineral processing. This review focuses on the changes in plant practice specifically to improve iron sulphide rejection by controlling contaminant ion effects and discusses selected innovations in mineral processing that can be expected to play a role in iron control. One change to control contaminant ions is size reduction (the use of stage grinding and inert stirred milling) and another is system chemistry (order of reagent addition and exploitation of the flexibility of sulphoxy species). Plant examples illustrate the successes, and indicate that there are several options available. The general innovations consider the new tools for measuring gas dispersion properties and quantifying froth characteristics from images. Examples of their application to improve concentrate quality illustrate the potential. Other innovations adapt geostatistics to model variations in ore flotation response to provide feed forward control and rigorously apply the statistical experimental methodology in plant test work. An example from one concentrator shows that significant improvements to reduce the iron content of concentrates can be achieved by applying these basic principles.

TAXATION has become a major item in the operation of Canadian mines, and, as such, merits our most serious consideration. I feel it was a splendid idea for the Institute to set aside this time for a frank discussion of this important subject, and believe great benefit will result from a better understanding of the methods and underlying principles involved. Mining, as a great national industry, may quite properly be called upon to pay its fair share of the cost of running the country; and there is no tendency on our part to avoid this responsibility. There is, however, a very definite demand that the proportion be just, and fairly and sensibly applied. I believe that Mr. C. G. Williams, Secretary of the Canadian Metal Mining Association, and others, are giving details of the various Provincial and Dominion regulati6ns, so I shall not touch on that phase of the situation. However, there are some important factors to which I should like very briefly to call your attention. The first is the vital need for stability. As you all know, a considerable period must elapse between the preliminary stages of any mining venture and the time when it comes to production-or is finally abandoned as un-profitable. These early days are fraught with many unavoidable uncertainties. If, to these natural hazards, the apprehension of instability of governmental action be added, the risk becomes so great that capital seeks other and safer fields for investment, and many otherwise promising projects are thus discarded. There probably never has been a time in recent years when so much money was seeking investment as now. Under favourable conditions, the development of our great mineral resources would be a natural and attractive outlet for this money. The amount of taxation which the mining industry can properly absorb is of the utmost importance at this time, and it might be well to consider this question in its relation to the economic stability of our country, for it cannot be too greatly emphasized that direct taxation is only one item in the net return which our governments derive from the mining industry. Indeed, the many indirect benefits are so manifest that it would seem almost unnecessary to enumerate them! We almost invariably think of mine taxation as a direct company tax-overlooking the fact that sales tax, customs duties, acreage tax, income tax on mine dividends, foreign shareholders' dividend tax, and others, must all be taken into consideration. It would seem that the economic value of non-ferrous metal mining in Canada is not sufficiently understood and appreciated.

Economics, Resources, Environment and Technology are the major driving forces in the base metals industry. However, these factors are intertwined and together will propel the industry in the future. The demand for metals has grown with economic expansion, between 2 to 4 % p.a. The current growth cycle has been driven by economic expansion in China where the demand for base metals has risen from - 7 % of the world demand in the 90's to - 25 % of world demand today, and rising. Base metals are commodities and their demand and price are cyclical. Historically metal prices have declined in constant dollars, forcing the industry to reduce costs, increase productivity and increase the scale of operation for economies of scale. Due to resource depletion and capacity expansion the industry is driven to expand its reserve and resource base. However, in the case of sulphide deposits of copper and nickel it appears to be a losing battle. For nickel the laterites represent a vast source at this time. Their development requires development of new technologies to make these resources economic. Emission reduction is being increasingly mandated in most jurisdictions with all governments enacting progressively more stringent regulations. The industry has been responding with technological innovation. With the Kyoto protocol there is a push to reduce energy intensity in metal production. Technological innovation is driven by all the other factors and is leading to novel ways of doing exploration, mining and processing, that would maximize resource delineation and utilization, reduce costs, increase productivity, reduce energy consumption, maximize asset utilization and reduce environmental affects. Development of alternative technologies such as Pressure Acid Leach of laterite for nickel, bio-leaching, heap leaching, SX-EW etc are being adopted to achieve the aims of the industry.

"Canadian Royalties Inc. owns and exploits the Nunavik Nickel Project: a copper and nickel deposit in Nunavik, Québec. The nickel and copper concentrates are filtered by plate and frame filter presses, and are transported 100km north to Deception Bay by truck. As the site is situated in the far north, extreme weather can be detrimental to production: roads can close for significant periods of time, resulting in the concentrator using all its storage capacity. During the winter of 2017, this accounted for over 100 hours of unplanned mill downtime. Different solutions to this problem were evaluated and the most economically viable combination of solutions was determined to be the use of concentrate storage containers and upgrading the plate size of the existing nickel filter press. By satisfying new, increased utility requirements, the cycle times would not change, but produce 30% more filter cake. Simulations were developed to determine the number of concentrate containers needed in conjunction with the upgraded press to eliminate unplanned downtime due to road closures and secure production through the winter. This paper summarises these simulations, the commissioning and start-up of the upgraded filter press, container loading procedures, and how this was put together to achieve a record 2018 winter season with a 90 percent reduction in downtime. The payback period of the project was 4 months. A specialised side-tipping trailer emptied the containers during the fall of 2018.INTRODUCTION The Nunavik Nickel Project is a nickel/copper mining project located in Nunavik, Québec. The nickel and copper concentrates are stored in stock tanks after thickening and are then filtered by plate and frame filter presses at the concentrator before being transported 100km to the shipping port at Deception Bay by trucks. The region is prone to periods of extreme weather during the winter, with winds that can reach +100km/hr and blizzards that severely limit visibility. The roads to Deception Bay are often affected by this weather, causing closures that last an average of 18hrs and as long as 72hrs. Additionally, there is a 15% chance that road closures occur within 24hrs of the last event. This has been an issue for the concentrator team since start-up in 2013, causing unplanned mill downtime every winter (Table 1) due to filling concentrate storage capacity during prolonged closures of the roads to Deception Bay."

"The Ferderber gold deposit is of Archean age. It consists of a series of gold-bearing quartz lenses within a shear zone that crosscuts the central part of the quartz dioritic Bourlamaque batholith. On average, this zone strikes N70E and dips 65SE. The Ferderber shear zone, which hosts the ore lenses, has been affected by a succession of tectonic events. A possible early period of brittle shear, accompanied by the formation of quartz lenses, resulted from strike slip movement along the zone. These early quartz veins were subsequently folded and boudinaged during reverse movement that accompanied a prolonged period of ductile shear. More quartz veins were emplaced in the shear zone at this time; these were also deformed by the thrusting. The latest tectonic event to affect the shear zone was a period of brittle fracture.Early dextral strike-slip movement on the shear zone is suggested by the local occurrence of Riedel shears, the preferred association of ore with east-northeast oriented segments of the zone, and by the apparent en echelon arrangement of some ore lenses. The most important event, a reverse movement, is indicatedby the attitudesoffoliation, folds, boudins, COS tectonites and slip planes. The late brittle fracturing formed narrow gouge filled faults, locally flanked by brecciazones, whichrun generally within and parallel to the shear zone, and also conjugate fractures that crosscut the zone.The Ferderber and six other adjacent gold deposits were formed in a structural regime dominated by a generally horizontal north-south regional compression. The Y axis of the strain ellipsoid is east-west and varies from horizontal to a plunge of 25 0 w."

"Irgiredmet Institute carried out the study on the development of gold recovery technology from refractory ore from a Russian deposit. The ore contained 1.1 g/t Au, 1.5% of pyrite and 2.4% of pyrrhotite. The recovery of gold achieved was 84.7% using gravity with generation of high grade recoverable gold concentrate and gravity middling. In the course of lime treatment, cyanidation of the middling followed by tailings detoxification the consumption of reagents was 13.0 kg/t CaO, 95 kg/t NaCN and 72 kg/t Ca(OCl)2 of the concentrate. This was capital intensive.In order to decrease the consumption of reagents, magnetic separation of the middling of the concentrates from gravity separation was added to this flow sheet. Pyrrotite recovered to magnetic fraction, which did not contain gold in accordance to this advanced flow sheet. The mass yield of pyrite goldbearing non-magnetic fraction decreased down to 1.5 times in relative to gravity middling. The slurry filtration prior to and after cyanidation allowed the organization of cyanide solution recycling.The results of pilot plant tests using the developed flow sheet showed that the content of pyrrhotite in the non-magnetic fraction decreased from 59.1% to 11.3%. The reagents consumption was 12 kg/t CaO, 3 kg/t NaCN and 16 kg/t Ca(OCl)2 of the pyrite concentrate. The total gold recovery using this flow sheet was 83.4%. Due to a decreased consumption of reagents, cost efficiency of the process was achieved. Based on the results of this research, a project design criteria was developed. A processing plant with the annual throughput of 2.6 million tonnes of ore is being designed."

This paper outlines the function of the Safety and Compensation Division of the Mining Association of British Columbia. After a general discussion of safety and the safety program now being followed in B.C., the author goes on to describe the wide-ranging aspects of compensation payments and company assessment rates. Special attention is also given to the problem of silicosis in mining operations. In appendices to the paper, the experience rating plan of the mining industry is compared to that recently adopted for the construction industry. Introduction The Mining Association of British Columbia consists of fifty-five member companies, including virtually all the producing mines as well as the larger exploration, contracting and development companies. On completion of an extensive study of safety and compensation in the mining industry, the Mining Association of British Columbia instituted a Safety and Compensation Division in 1954. The director of the Safety and Compensation Division reports to the Executive Committee of the Association. There are two main functions of this Division. "8.1. INTRODUCTIONThe purpose of this chapter is not to provide precedents or examples of provisions, but rather to offer some comments that may be worth considering in the negotiation or review of an agreement. These comments are not intended to be exhaustive. It must also be noted that, although the chapter is written in the context of a common law joint venture, the concepts and concerns for the most part apply equally to a corporation that is owned by only a few shareholders for the purpose of participating in the project held by the corporation.The corporation has the advantage of having much of its organization established by local corporate law, but the particular wishes of the shareholders will appear in a shareholders’ agreement. The principal differences will be surprisingly small, save for the acquisition provisions that appear in a farm-in agreement1 and the substantial portion of the joint venture agreement devoted to creating and organizing the joint venture entity. Where the joint venture agreement refers to venturers and committees, the shareholders’ agreement will refer to shareholders and the board of directors, but both will have to deal with such basic matters as decision-making, default, dispute resolution, first refusals, funding, and carrying out work on the project. For convenience, this chapter usually refers to “venturers”, which may be taken to include shareholders.Negotiations give rise to many varying circumstances and concerns, and the main asset of the negotiator is an open and flexible mind. A desired result can often be accomplished indirectly in circumstances where the other side has adopted an inflexible position on a suggested approach. As precedents and standard forms tend to focus a negotiator’s thinking, they can be counterproductive. It is after the deal has been agreed to that a precedent can be of great assistance to the draftsman.The concepts are arranged in alphabetical order for convenience, not to suggest their sequence or position in an agreement or their relative importance. An agreement should adopt a progression of subjects in what the parties consider a logical sequence to read and work with. However, experience has indicated that it is best to set out in a single article the substance of the deal (i.e. the terms relating to the farm-in and what the acquiring party has to do to acquire his interest), preferably near the beginning of an agreement. The acquisition of the interest is, after all, the first order of business. The joint venture provisions will then follow in a reasonable sequence. It is also worthwhile to devote a single article to any special provisions that may apply during the earn-in period. For example, it may be provided that, although all work is to be done by the acquiring party as operator (with the duty of care, liability, and reporting requirements as set out in the joint venture sections of the agreement), but during the acquisition period, the acquiring party, acting as operator, may be at liberty to do such work as he wishes, without the need for any committee or other approvals, and committee meetings may be suspended.2An agreement is divided into paragraphs and articles to make it easier for the parties to read and understand, and to assist a party in finding “that provision” when the need arises. A comprehensive table of contents will also assist the parties who must work under an agreement. An added benefit of a table of contents is that in preparing it, the draftsman sees the overall structure of the agreement and will often catch and correct flaws."

"IntroductionELEMENTAL sulphur occurs in three types of deposits: in salt domes in the Gulf Coast region of the United States and Mexico, from which over 90 per cent of world native-sulphur production is obtained; in sedimentary deposits such as those in Sicily, which are thought by some authorities to contain the largest world reserves of elemental sulphur; and as surface deposits, associated now or in the past with some phase of vulcanism, the type which bas the greatest world-wide distribution.Deposits of the volcanic type are the subject of this paper.From antiquity until the successful development of the sulphur-bearing salt domes at the beginning of this century, important sulphur production for local needs was obtained from volcanic deposits in many parts of the world. Due to technical and economic factors, however, producers could not compete in price with sulphur from salt domes. •The result has been that, except in Japan and Chile, little sulphur was produced from volcanic deposits from about 1910 until the start of the Korean war in 1950. Shortly after the outbreak of the Korean war, an acute world sulphur shortage developed and prices skyrocketed in many countries up to several hundred dollars a ton. Interest in volcanic deposits was renewed and exploitation of many was undertaken. "The Nain Province (NP) of northern Labrador is a >600 km long by =100 km wide Archean craton that has undergone relatively little mineral exploration until economically signifcant concentrations of orthomagmatic nickel sulphide were discovered by Diamond Fields Resources (DFR) at Voisey’s Bay. Due to the great time span between crust formation andfnal intrusive activity (ca. 3.9 Ga to 1.27 Ga),there were, however, numerous metallogenic events within the NP.The NP was intruded by the ca. 1.3 Ga to1.2 Ga Nain Plutonic Suite (NPS) composite anorthosite-granite complex. The NPS dividesthe NP into the southern Hopedale Block (90 km by 150 km) and the northern SaglekBlock (375 km long by =50 km wide). These two blocks appear to represent two distinct Archean cratonic nuclei, each with its own distinct metallogenic history. The NPS is a coalesced assemblage of composite intrusions which include anorthosite, troctolite, norite, gabbro and granite.The Hopedale Block contains the Hunt River and Florence Lake greenstone belts, and the Weekes Amphibolite which represents remnantsf the older Hunt River greenstone belt. Geologically, these belts have some potential to host komatiitic Kambalda-style nickel, volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS) and meso -thermal lode gold mineralization. The unconformity between Paleoproterozoic cover sequences and the trondhjemite-tonalite-granodiorite (TTG)suite which engulfed the greenstones was the locus for lead-zinc-bearing quartz-carbonate veins. Minor fracture-hosted uraninite showings are also present in the TTG.The Saglek Block is a high-grade gneissterrane with deformed Archean supracrustal sequences but no greenstone belts. Within the gneiss are variably-sized enclaves that range in composition from anorthositic to ultramafic; some of these latter xenoliths contain abun-dant fuchsite. There are also three small anorthositic to ultramafic meta-igneous complexes present in the gneiss near Okak Bay.Some Archean meta sedimentary and maficgneiss supracrustal sequences contain iron-oxide and sulphide members. The sulphide-bearing Tasiuyak parag neiss defines the cra-tonic suture between the NP and Churchill(Rae) Province. Along the cratonic suture between the NP and Churchill Province from Ramah Bay north are remnants of the Archean(or Paleoproterozoic) Hutton Anortho site Suite. Ultramafc layers within the suite contain chromite and elevated Ni values.Three ca. 2.0 Ga supracrustal sequenceswere deposited in small fault-bounded basins within the NP. The Snyder Group contains pyrrhotitiferous massive sulphide horizons. TheMugford Group contains SEDEX-like massive sulphide blocks in a debris fow and ultramafic sills with unusual PGE concentrations; alaskitic granite cutting basement gneiss to the group contains stockwork-like pyritiferous quartz veins. The Ramah Group contains numerous MVT-style zinc-lead sulphide occurrences.The Reid Brook Intrusion of the NPS contains enormous and high-grade nickel-copper-cobalt massive sulphide bodies at the Voisey’s Bay deposit. Exploration in the northern portions of the NPS in 1995 has indicated the presence of other potentially economic nickel sulphide horizons."

Sustainable development in the mining and metallurgical industrial sectors can be implemented by two distinct groups: 1. The managers and operators of existing facilities ? working with industrial processes and systems that have been operating for many years, in some cases several decades 2. Those who are engineering and building new facilities or upgrades of existing plants. The focus of this paper is to look at approaches and tools available to bring sustainable development thinking and action to these two distinct areas. The paper will discuss: 1. The concept of working with existing facilities and processes to minimize waste and maximize product from a regional raw material/resource consumption perspective using By-product Synergy. The BPS concept has been carried out in Texas (TXI-Chaparral?s STAR Example), in Calgary, Alberta with Suncor assistance, in Montreal, Quebec with Noranda as project leader and currently in Ontario with Dofasco as industry champion. Successful outcomes are presented. 2. A new approach to designing greenfield facilities or upgrades to existing plants using a sustainable development review process. Undertaking the review early in every project can institutionalize the concept of discussing and implementing waste elimination, design for environment, eco-efficiency, risk minimization and community awareness and involvement in the future capital stock. The review process has been developed as an excellent tool for measuring and reporting on a corporation?s sustainable development progress. Examples of how this approach has been adopted in the mining and metallurgical industry, and the resultant outcomes are given.
