THE most important part of the routine survey work on a mine is the keeping up-to-date of plans and sections showing progress of stoping and development work, and the direction of the latter for the purpose of making necessary connections. Except in specialcircumstances, e.g., major horizoittal development, the exactitude required in this work is not extreme, and a method of survey in keeping with the demands of the work itself is all tbat is required.For example, no one would consider measuring the walls of a stope to a fraction of an inch; such extreme accuracy would be wasted.The stope walls being irregular, a mean is usually taken, and for ordinary purposes a survey with a limiting error of six inches is quite satisfactory for the purpose of plotting either stoping or development.It is the author's aim in this paper to describe the method in use at the North Broken Hill Oompany's British mine. This method, while being sufficiently accurate for the purpose in view, possesses the very great advantages of speed and simplicity of operation,with a minimum of necessary equipment. This latter is a very important item where several surveys on different levels have to be carried out on the one day.Let it be understood, however, that the use of this method does not dispense with the theodolite, but simply serves as a convenient adjunct to obtain details and to extend the accurate theodolite survey up rises and down winzes, and through ladderways orwinzes into stopes, where the use of a theodolite, if not actually impossible, is often exceedingly inconvenient. The additional information that Clarke and Taylor (1982) provide about the important but poorly documented Ardlethan deposit is, of course, very welcome. However their contention that structural considerations, in conjunction with petrology, alter the interpretation of the mineralogical and geochemical data presented previously (Scott, 1981) is not accompanied by adequate supporting evidence. Indeed characteristics of the orebodies studied invalidate their arguments.Heterogeneity between matrix and fragments is not a problem in the South Cherry and Ardwest orebodies because most samples are comprised entirely of interlocking hydrothermal assemblages with a fabric and mineralogy that is uniform through both former breccia fragments and matrix. In hand specimen, the rock superficially resembles altered granite and, as indicated by Clarke and Taylor (1982), a brecciated texture is difficult to discern. In thin section, relict brecciated textures can be observed as localized changes in the grainsize or in the distribution of minerals that outline former breccia fragments (P. J. Eadington, 1982, personal communication).Because of the intense brecciation and comminution of rocks (fragments < 10 mm are usual) in the South Cherry and Ardwest breccia bodies, hydrothermal recrystallization was complete, resulting in homogenization of fragments and matrix. Furthermore, the amount of sample analysed (-100 g for drill core and 2-3 kg for hand specimens) is sufficiently large to be representative of both former breccia fragments and matrix. The Carpathia and Stackpool orebodies, with their abundance of sedimentary fragments, have alteration superimposed on a heterogeneous fabric, and were not studied. Thus the problems of differentiating between fragments and matrix (Clarke and Taylor, 1982) are irrelevant to the particular orebodies described in my paper.Within the alteration halo, which is several hundred metres wide (Paterson, 1976), the very uniformity of the alteration assemblages implies that subsequent, postmineralization brecciation is of only minor significance.Indeed tourmaline pipes in the Ardwest pit are less than several metres across (Clarke, 1979) and produce minimal alteration in the surrounding rocks. Therefore the interpretation of the mineralogical zonation is not compromised by the recognition of several periods of brecciation.

This paper endeavours to lay as concisely as possible, before the members the salient features of local gold milling practice, and to point out in what respects this practice differs from that of other large mining camps. This is essentially a free milling ore the gangue being quartz and the gold occurring in a coarse form. The rapid development of the Australian steel industry over the past twenty years has greatly increased the demand for coking coal from the collieries owned by the Broken Hill Proprietary Co. Ltd. and Australian Iron & Steel Ltd. This in turn has called for an intensive and continuous programme of colliery expansion and new colliery development, along with the reorganization and modernization of existing collieries.This paper presents a general description of the factors involved and the techniques used in planning modern colliery development for the steel industry.PRELIMINARY GEOLOGICAL INVESTIGATIONSIn any colliery development, preliminary geological investigations require a detailed and practical knowledge of the geology and characteristics of the coal-field as a whole. The passage of chloroform vapour in a carrier of oxygen through two nickel sulphide ores heated to 380°C converted the nickel to the water soluble chloride form. In one ore the nickel (2·75 per cent) was presentas violarite ((Ni, Fe)3S4) whereas in the second it was present as pentlandite, ((Fe, Ni)9S8) (4·9 per cent Ni).A similar technique was utilized to convert nickel in nickeliferous laterites (1·6 per cent Ni) into a soluble chloride using town gas instead of oxygen as a carrier.With both techniques greater than 90 per cent extraction was achieved.

The Department of Mineral Resources has a statutory responsibility for mine site environmental management and control in New South Wales. The Department is focusing on an environmental management systems (EMS) approach, as a management tool to achieve æbest practiceÆ outcomes both within our own organisation and on mine sites. One of the DepartmentÆs tools is environmental risk assessment and management which incorporates the Mining, Rehabilitation and Environmental Management Process (MREMP). The MREMP was introduced many years ago in order to integrate the activities of key stakeholders who may have a material interest in the mine. The MREMP provides an ideal mechanism by which ædue diligenceÆ requirements and environmental management programs can be integrated into mining operations and lead to a sustainable post-mining land use.

The estimation of the shear stress distribution around an excavation is important to the design of the excavation since shear stresses can generate cracks, loosen grain boundaries or otherwise degrade the mechanical and physical properties of the rock and lead to stability problems. In this study, the distribution of shear stresses in a pillar were back-calculated from the deformation measurements made from the SPDV (Site and Preliminary Design Validation) area at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) site. A plausible pattern of shear stress around an excavation has been suggested based on the Zero Strain Boundary (ZSB) calculation, computer simulation using FLAC, and back-calculation using measured deformation rates in the pillars.

The presence of gold or tin in a particular place in payable quantities may be suspected from geological and prospE;cting reports. It behoves the engineer by judiciously spaced boreholes or pits to establish whether the place is exploitable with profit, and it is the purpose of this paper to set out the ways in which this is done. The various types of deposit to be considered occur in Malaya, Thafland and Borneo, in which countries the writer spent four years in estimating alluvials.The methods described were used in actual practice both by the writer and previous engineers for the same company. The subsequent exploitation of the alluvials evaluated by the methods given below shows that the recovery was as good as, and sometimes higher than, expected. No claims are made to the originality of the methods, but it is 'felt that they may be new to some engineers and< interesting to others contemplating alluvial testing.

Iron Ore - Mineral Processing Overview Several years of iron ore price increases, coupled with a period of strong global demand for raw materials, presented iron and steel producers with unprecedented costs and difficulty procuring the demanded high quantities of iron ore. These conditions spurred many companies to investigate new ore bodies and also reassess past decisions (such as divestment of captive iron ore mines that ensured dedicated supply or a move to reliance on the 'spot market' instead of long term contracts with suppliers) and revisit alternative sources of iron units, including low grade deposits, tailings reprocessing, Ti-rich ores, and iron sands. To properly upgrade these iron sources requires a complete battery of mineral processing techniques. Within different regions around the world, operations and technology have developed to specifically beneficiate the local ore bodies. This paper attempts to bring these different general processing techniques together to allow insight into various common and proven methods of iron ore beneficiation. This paper further explores the current trend to develop global iron ore reserves, and discusses the methods to beneficiate and successfully reduce and smelt iron ore using Outotec's physical separation, direct reduction and smelting technologies for final production of pig iron and slag. Use of these various technologies may allow treatment of what was typically considered a tailings stream into a profitable product.

Randgold ResourcesÆ MorilaÆs gold leach plant is subjected to uncommon æoxygen stressesÆ. Feed ores exhibit very high oxygen demands, primarily caused by iron sulfides. In addition, ore oxygen demand varies significantly over time, as well as between different feed ore sources. The inability of the Morila gold leach plantÆs oxygenation system to cope with these high and fluctuating oxygen stresses manifested itself in variable gold residue grades, and cyanide consumption rates.Management launched a Morila oxygen system review project during September 2009, with the objective of auditing the performance of the then current oxygenation system, against required performance parameters as calculated from oxygen demands of the various feed ore types and targeted dissolved oxygen levels in the leach train.This paper describes the systematic changes made since 2009 to the Morila oxygen system in four main areas: O2-supply plant, O2-volumes, O2-controls and oxygenation equipment. Data are provided on corresponding improvements in leach plant performance. A brief review of the Waipipi Iron Sands Limited company history and operations over the past ten years is made along with a summary of the benefits of this mining company to New Zealand. Land rehabilitation procedures in coastal dune lands are described in detail and brief mention is made of a study of animal health and copper uptake. The paper concludes with a summary of the increased emphasis on agronomy and restoration as the mining operation commences dredging in a better class of grazing land.

This contribution summarises new knowledge and data, obtained during a three year ARCAMIRA funded research project, on the mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of hydrothermal alteration associated with low sulfidation, gold-silver epithermal deposits. These data are used to develop exploration vectors for use at both deposit and district scales, plus techniques have been established to distinguish ore grade epithermal systems from barren or low grade systems. Deposits investigated were Ladolam, Papua New Guinea, Gosowong and Mt Muro, Indonesia, Cerro Vaguardia, Argentina and Bimurra and Twin Hills, Australia.

Establishment of the Cadia East Panel Cave Stage One (PC1S1) commenced with the firing of the first bell in early 2011. Production began with the completion of the undercut in May 2014. PC1S1 used a post-undercut composed of 114 drawbells covering a footprint area of 73 438 m². The extraction level is located at a depth of 1200 m below the surface and is based on a 32 × 20 m El Teniente layout. Cave establishment required the construction of multiple conveyor drifts, a large-capacity jaw-gyratory crusher and ancillary ventilation and pumping infrastructure. Preconditioning via hydraulic fracturing and blasting was implemented at various locations of the cave block height. Experimental Study of Ore Characterisation Methods for AG/SAG Mills Mining companies have long recognised the importance of ore breakage characterisation in design and optimisation of their crushing and grinding circuits. In one of the industry standard methods relevant to AG/SAG milling, ore is characterised using mainly high energy single impact tests. However recent DEM studies have suggested that breakage in AG/SAG mills is mainly due to low energy repetitive (or multiple) collisions rather than single high energy impacts. Hence a study was initiated at the JKMRC to investigate the behaviour of ores under such conditions. Carefully designed experiments have been performed using two laboratory mill sizes (0.6 m and 1.1 m diameter) to mimic the reported low energy repetitive impact breakage under low load conditions. The breakage characterisation parameters derived from standard high energy single impact tests on the same ores was then used to predict the low energy repetitive impact breakage. Significant bias was found in the simulations which clearly warranted further investigation. The extensive experimental program which followed employed three separate methods: the JKRBT (JK Rotary Breakage Tester) for high energy single impact and low energy repetitive impacts, gravity drops for low energy repetitive impacts, and laboratory mills to provide an extended number of low energy repetitive impacts. The breakage energies associated with these experiments were accurately measured with a high speed video camera. Two breakage indices, the degree of breakage (t10) and the breakage probability (S) were used to describe the breakage test results. This paper summarises the major results from this experimental study, which has facilitated the development of a new breakage characterization method relevant to AG/SAG mill modelling.

The cave propagation behaviour of a jointed rock mass is strongly governed by the unique nature of joints and discontinuities, together with the intact strength of rock bridges that make up the rock fabric. A discrete finite difference (DFD) modelling technique has been developed to allow for the detailed consideration of the rock mass structural fabric at many scales and through many different stress paths that can be used for complex mine-scale analysis. The DFD methodology uses interfaces to explicitly represent large-scale structures and ubiquitous joints embedded within the simulated rock mass matrix to characterise intermediate structures. Through simulated testing of DFD materials, properties such as strength anisotropy and scale effects can be obtained. Mt Waruwari, host to the Porgera underground gold mine in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea (PNG), is a prominent ridge of sediments and dioritic intrusives rising approximately 600m above the surrounding valley floor. Consequently, mining occurs in a low stress environment where structural and material considerations are foremost in the design of ground support and reinforcement. Three major rock types are encountered in the underground mine. These are locally referred to as "black sediments" (slightly indurated mudstones and clayey siltstones), "altered sediments" (derived from black sediments by thermal metamorphism), and "intrusives" of dioritic composition. The rocks are moderately to highly fractured, the black sediments being generally weak and occasionally sheared while the altered sediments and intrusives are quite strong but often brittle. Mining takes place from a series of stopes extracted by either slot and mass blast or a modified vertical crater retreat method (VCR), which are backfilled with a cemented rock fill. Ground support and reinforcement has been relatively conserv- ative to date and generally relies on pattern reinforcement of all development with cement grouted "rebar" bolts and mesh, extending to pattern cable bolting with occasional mesh in stope backs. In addition there has been considerable reinforcement of stope hangingwalls in some cases. A programme of broad scale structural mapping, monitoring with extensometers, material property testing, and stress analysis has been devised to allow optimum design of ground support and reinforcement in the future. There is an urgent need to use our vast knowledge with a new wisdom and this requires new integrated teams of experts to provide the best alternatives for the needed new development problems. These teams must include economists, engineers and a broad spectrum of scientists. Today it is possible to produce clean energy, stop soil erosion, clean water and reduce and use wastes of many types.   There is a great need to improve science, natural science, education at all levels. All people must know how our planet works and that fluctuations, some inevitable, some controllable, are inevitable and that we must prepare for them. And it is clear that protecting the environment, eliminating pollution, preserving bio diversity is good economics. Ecology Economy cannot be separated.

New 40Ar/39Ar dates of vein and wall rock adularia from seven epithermal deposits and one porphyry copper prospect help constrain the ages of mineralisation in the Hauraki Goldfield. Vein adularia from the Paritu region yielded a single 40Ar/39Ar plateau date of 16.315 ¦ 0.066 Ma. Five 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of three samples of vein adularia from the Opitonui deposit overlap within error to yield a preferred age of 13.149 ¦ 0.016 Ma. Two samples of vein adularia from the Night Reef at the Broken Hills deposit yield exceptionally flat 40Ar/39Ar plateaus, and all dates overlap within error to provide an age of 7.121 ¦ 0.010 Ma. Two 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of one sample of vein adularia from the Wharekirauponga deposit overlap within error to provide an age of 6.318 ¦ 0.061 Ma. Four 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates of three samples of vein adularia from the Maratoto deposit overlap within error to provide an age of 6.411 ¦ 0.022 Ma. Two samples of adularia from altered wall rock at the Sovereign deposit yield three 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that range from 6.547 ¦ 0.021 to 6.806 ¦ 0.028 Ma. This suggests that mineralisation formed around 6.6 Ma, but the results are complicated because the adularia contains minor illite that post-dates adularia formation. Results from the Karangahake deposit are complex. Two samples of vein adularia yield three 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that range from 6.116 ¦ 0.116 to 6.901 ¦ 0.101 Ma, whereas one sample of wall rock adularia that contains minor late illite yields two 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that overlap within error to provide a date of 5.734 ¦ 0.041. The range of dates indicates that more work is necessary to understand the history of mineralisation at this deposit. Two samples of vein adularia from the Tui deposit yield four 40Ar/39Ar plateau dates that overlap within error to provide an age of 5.714 ¦ 0.017 Ma. These results confirm previous work that indicates that the ages of epithermal deposits young southward in the Hauraki Goldfield. These results are also consistent with previously postulated different ages for deposits hosted in Kuaotunu Subgroup rocks in the northern goldfield (>10 Ma), and deposits hosted in Waiwawa Subgroup rocks in the southern goldfield (7.1 to 5.7 Ma).

When a collapse in its services shaft caused rapid gas build up and its premature closure in. 1951, the Blackwater Mine at Wiauta was in full production with significant ore reserves yet to be mined. A total of nearly 23 tonnes of gold was produced from the mine during its 44 year life. It was New ZealandÆs deepest underground mine, producing gold from an extensive sub-vertical mineralised quartz reef that averaged 0.6 m in width. Mining was by stoping between adits and short shafts, latterly with the main mine access through the 840 m deep Prohibition shaft. Macraes Mining Company Ltd are presently investigating the possibility of reopening the mine. This paper outlines a preliminary assessment of the main geotechnical factors for achieving the reopening, using recent exploration and old mine information. The greywacke host rock mass in the vicinity of the quartz reef has been evaluated using both these sources, and the paper discusses how the geological structure, intact and rock mass strengths, the rock mass defects, in situ stresses, and groundwater inflows may effect the reopening and support of the prohibition shaft, the excavation methods and support for a new supplementary shaft, and the likely excavation and support requirements for working adits and stopes in the rejuvenated mine.

Laboratory and pilot plant investigations aimed at recovering gold as an electroformed sheet from gold eluate and gold leach solutions and slurries are discussed. The electrolytic test work undertaken makes use of high surface area electrodes, in particular nickel-chrome foam metal and activated carbon, as well as ultrasonic activation. The process involves initial gold electrowinning (or adsorption onto activated carbon), followed by gold electroforming, both operations being carried out in a specially designed reactor. The pilot plant work mainly involved the treatment of gold eluate solutions from a South African gold mine containing 600 mg/L Au: some tests were also carried out on gold leach solutions containing 6 mg/L Au. In the former case, very efficient gold extraction onto the foam metal cathode was achieved using electrolysis combined with ultrasonics. The polarity of the gold-loaded cathode was then reversed and, using a replacement electroforming electrolyte, gold was electroformed in situ onto a polished stainless steel mandrel, from which gold sheet was subsequently removed. In the case of leach solutions, pilot plant tests confirmed laboratory findings that in the presence of calcium (resulting from the lime used during the leaching process) no electrowinning is possible. Laboratory tests showed, however, that when sodium (in the form of NaOH or Na2CO3) is added to the leach solution, electrowinning can indeed take place. Alternatively, if a special activated carbon electrode is used (without current), the non-ionic calcium aurocyanide complex is adsorbed on to the activated carbon. When a gold-loaded activated carbon electrode is made anodic in a gold electroforming electrolyte, gold electroforming is feasible, although the efficiency is very low. The possible implications of these developments for gold recovery are further examined.
