The principles of occupational risk evaluation resulting from the improper ventilation of the underground mines were presented. It was shown that the risk level implies the appropriate planning and usage of prevention methods. That approach is fundamental in the ventilation, fire and climate safety management in the copper ore mines. The paper uses the adequately modified Risk Score method.

SLon magnetic separators utilise the combined force fields of magnetism, pulsating fluid and gravity to continuously beneficiate fine weakly magnetic minerals. They possess the advantages of high efficiency, low operative cost and high reliability. Until now there were about 600 SLon magnetic separators widely applied in processing oxidised iron ores, ilmenite, manganese ore and many other minerals. In this paper, several typical oxidised iron processing flow sheets with SLon magnetic separators are introduced.

The Metallurgical processes used in the gold industry in Queensland since the 1850's are reviewed. The major upswing in, gold processing this decade has brought the technology of heap leaching, carbon in pulp and carbon in leach, flotation for gold and tailings retreatment to Queensland. In many cases operators have developed or improved these processes to treat difficult ores or to cope with local climatic conditions.

An Ore Reserve Estimate aims to foreqast the impact of the complex mixture of factors which constitute a mining and milling operation. The factors are pulled together in the Mine Plan which then constrains the reserve estimate. At the Zinc Mine at Broken Hill the complexity of the ore lodes highlights some of the factors which affect the ore grade estimates and at Elura the different metallurgical characteristics of the ore types influences their economic viability.

The tragedy of the Moura No. 2 incident has lost much of its emotional mileage for those organisations that thrive on loss and suffering. However, for the families, workers, mine owners and operators in the Queensland underground coalfields, the challenge of delivering a positive outcome, though well underway, is in its infancy. The pressure created by interested parties is necessary for overcoming the inertia involved in change; but they cannot deliver the change. It is with great pleasure that I accepted the invitation to make a closing address to this Congress particularly as it is here in Brisbane. The main duty of the International Mine Ventilation Congress Committee and in particular the chairman is to ensure that these conferences are held every four to five years in suitable locations. My main role over the last four years has been to promote holding this Congress in Australia and it was a great relief when the Queensland team and the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy accepted the challenge in November 1986.

The Republic of Kazakhstan has well developed mining and metallurgical complex. In modern conditions, when deposits of useful minerals are running thin, it is very important to find additional sources for obtaining necessary products. As our investigations showed different kinds of waste may be used for producing of different kinds of products, which are successfully applied in different branches of KazakhstanÆs economy. Analysis of ways for increasing of complex use of mineral raw materials of different deposits, widening raw mineral materials base and decreasing negative effects on the environment, are presented in this paper.

The concentrations of trace metals in deep hydrothermal solutions (~1 km depth, 200 to >300¦C) from modern hydrothermal systems in the Taupo Volcanic Zone, New Zealand, and Ladolam, Lihir Island, Papua New Guinea were obtained using a purpose-built downhole fluid sampler and ICP-MS analyses. The results range widely: gold (<0.1 - 23 ppb); silver (<3 - 2400 ppb); arsenic (100 - 18 000 ppm); antimony (2 - 1200 ppm); mercury (<1 - 78 ppb) and provide the basis for quantifying the flux and fate of metals as well as assessing their sources (Simmons and Brown, 2006, 2007). The core of the problem of sustaining steady growth at this or a similar rate is to ensure regular flows of investment. This sustains productivity, helps to control balance of payments pressures, and to check inflation. 3. Australians have always been great travellers but, traditionally Australian companies have been very conservative in contrast to more daring individual Australians. During the 1960s, '1970s and 1980s, the Australian companies spent much of their time exploring in Australia. It was only some of the major companies like CRA and BHP that had explored in places like Bougainville and Chile. However, during the mid-1980s some of the smaller companies started looking beyond their shore towards other opportunities in other countries. Why did they do this? Were they pushed or did they jump? And where did they go?

Following plant trials in 1972 Mount Lyell installed an AMDEL On Stream Analysis system for measuring copper and density on the flot- ation feed and final plant tailing streams, in August 1973. As a result of poor performance of the final tailing system these probes were changed over to the rougher tailing stream, back to the final tailing stream and finally to the final copper concentrate stream where the system is currently performing satisfact- orily. The history of the development of the system to its current operational status is Described.

Arm Royalty systems of different types are used throughout Australia by both state and federal governments to raise revenue and thus facilitate in the proper distribution of mineral wealth. Royalty systems should be neutral and equitable but by their very nature these objectives are impossible to obtain. Because of the individual nature of mineral deposits, in particular variable cutoff grades and tonnages, governments should be aware of the possible trade off between short and long term gains of the particular royalty scheme introduced.

These prob- lems include the nature of the air-water interface, particle-bubble contact and bubble attachment, and the effect of par- ticle size.
