As mining undoubtedly influences the natural environment future challenges of copper ore mining are minimisation of land use in area and duration, proper land rehabilitation as well as tailings management. One possible solution to avoid these negative impacts could be the application of underground mining with backfilling tailings compounds. This approach would definitely increase the production cost. Against this background the project analyses the influence of an æecologically satisfyingÆ copper ore mining on world market prize and demand as well as on the environment. In the project 261 copper ore mines accounting for 98 per cent of world copper production have been examined. After modelling a backfill plant, analyses of applied backfill techniques were conducted. Afterwards a method of cost estimation was developed and then the backfill plant model was applied in three case studies. The results were transferred into scenarios. The work closes with a short discussion and gives an outlook to forthcoming research. The results presented in this work have been generated within the Collaborative Research Center (CRC) 525 entitled æResource-orientated view of metallic raw material flowsÆ. This interdisciplinary project was established at Aachen University of Technology (Germany) in 1997 and is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The long-term goal of this research program is the identification of options for the resource-sensitive supply and processing of metallic raw materials. In order to address the sustainable development challenges facing the metals and minerals industry an integrated resource management system is to be developed and tested for important metallic raw materials. Case studies for aluminium and copper are being conducted by the CRC 525 in order to provide useful and efficient tools for decision makers over the entire life cycle of these materials.

Mine-groundwater interaction at the Pasminco Rosebery Mine (PRM), western Tasmania, deserves special attention due to the unique climate and mining environment present. High rainfall and low evapotranspiration result in an excess of water, an uncommon problem at Australian sulfide bearing mines. Research is being undertaken to delineate current subsurface fluid flows and predict future fluid flows in order to improve management after mine closure. Acid mine drainage generation is well developed in abandoned mines throughout the area. If acid mine drainage is not controlled after mine closure, significant environmental degradation could occur in the receiving waters of the Pieman River system. The study area encompasses the heavily forested Mount Black, and underlying PRM workings. Groundwater flows beneath Mount Black through a crystalline fractured rock aquifer with faults and underground mine workings observed to act as the major hydraulic conduits. Recharge is controlled by local precipitation, and the ultimate discharge is thought to be the Pieman River system, which forms the topographic low in the area. Slug tests have been used in conjunction with the mineÆs extensive geotechnical database to spatially evaluate variation in hydraulic conductivity. In fractured rock terrain associated with mining, rock quality designation data can be a useful tool in delineating areas of similar hydraulic conductivity when combined with conventional hydrogeological methods. A GIS, mine planning software, an environmental and a geological database are linked to form the input for groundwater modelling.

Eutrophication of water bodies is one of the most severe environmental problems worldwide. It is well known that the availability of phosphate, as the limiting nutrient, is crucial for increased primary production and eutrophication. Calcite exhibits positive surface charge in most natural waters and can therefore be used for phosphate immobilisation. In this study, sorption experiments were performed in order to test different calcite materials regarding their suitability for use in restoration of eutrophic lakes. These short-term experiments were performed under different hydrochemical conditions (pH, SICC, initial dissolved P concentration) and with varying calcite properties (specific surface area and amount) in order to predict the long-term stability of the Ca-P-bonds. Peculiar shapes of isotherms that could not be explained only by adsorption processes were detected in the individual experiments. Depending on the residual P-concentration in solution, the isotherms can be divided into three sections indicating different processes responsible for the P-fixation on calcite surfaces. Adsorption prevails in equilibrium with lowest residual P-concentrations. The inflection of the isotherm at moderate residual P-concentrations suggests that precipitation and transformation of a Ca-P compound becomes dominant. This is supported by characteristic Ca/P-ratios for different Ca-P-compounds (b-tri- calcium-phosphate, octa-calcium-phosphate). On the new surface, phosphate ions again are fixed by adsorption. The observed transformation of P-bonding is crucial for sustainable phosphate immobilisation on calcite surfaces. While pure adsorption processes are reversible, the development of a thermodynamically stable Ca-P-phase, like hydroxylapatite, will lead to a lasting immobilisation of phosphate.

Over the past five years, dedicated tertiary mining engineering programs have become financially unsustainable in Australia on the basis of undergraduate enrolments alone. The situation is worse in other minerals related disciplines and extends to the technical minerals education sector. This paper reviews the causes for the current situation. Indicators are presented which suggest that enrolment trends can no longer be attributed only to business cycles in the minerals industry but are also reflective of a fundamental shift in student interest in the sciences and resources based engineering disciplines. Reactive responses to changing trends are diluting and compromising the quality of mining engineering education. It is unlikely that the trends can be reversed or resisted. Tertiary minerals educators need to position themselves so that they can be responsive to on-going change. Two proposals are offered which aim to anchor mining engineering in a long-term sustainable manner. The proposals have a common educational component which is concerned with restructuring how mining engineering programs are presented and providing more flexible access to such programs. However, the two proposals have significantly different commercial components. The commercial component of first proposal is concerned with working within the traditional education framework of universities to endow a critical number of core staff positions. It effectively equates to fund raising. The second proposal is concerned with developing a stand-alone commercial operation around the education and research advantages of the global and multi-disciplinary university system. As a shareholder in this business, a university department would earn dividends that it could then use to support its education initiatives. This proposal provides a performance-based mechanism for supporting university minerals programs and has the potential to be cost-neutral. Both proposals are suited to resource sharing with a select number of international mining schools and to the incorporation of the other tertiary minerals disciplines under threat.

Comprehensive occupational health and safety legislation in Australia is comparatively recent. It follows the examples set in U.S.A. and U.K. a decade or more ago. In Western Australia the Occupational Health, Safety and Welfare Act was proclaimed in April 1985. It still has a long way to go before it achieves all its objectives. The mining industry has developed a substantial body of health and safety regulations under the Mines Regulation Act. Considerable practical expertise in such matters already exists, much of it developed from hard won experience. As a result it would prefer not to become engulfed in the new legislation. It would prefer to build upon the cooperatively developed policies and workable practices in the field of occupational health and safety with which it is familiar. Associated Minerals Consolidated Ltd. is a leading mineral sands producer in Western Australia and has continuously developed its occupational health and safety policy and practices. Under the banner of "Resource Control", AMC seeks to provide a safe and healthy working environment at all times. This is being achieved through a strategy of a policy, a defined organisational structure and a detailed programme, which together comprise the "Resource Control System". Some of the activities and achievements of AMC in the field of occupational health and safety are compared with the objectives of contemporary legislation, and details of some of the specialised areas of the Resource Control Programme are discussed. The paper will also highlight and discuss impractical areas of potential legislation.

The issue of fine coal and tailings dewatering has become of increasing concern to many coal preparation operators, both in Australia and overseas due to a variety of factors. Increasing mechanisation and mining of thinner seams over the past decades has resulted in an increasing amount of fines generation while increasing international trade in coal and tighter environmental constraints on tailings disposal have resulted in the production of these same fines to be an increasing problem. However, technology to date has not always been able to supply a cost-effective solution to the handling of these fines in an efficient and environmentally benign manner. This paper will review the key issues associated with the dewatering of fine coal and tailings, will describe the major current practices and constraints, and finally will indicate alternative technologies that may have to be considered in the near future. For the purpose of this paper, "fine" coal is described as that material less than 0.5 mm in diameter (as this is the most common cutpoint between various plant circuits in Australian practice), although the technological constraints are very much dependent upon the fraction less than 45 micron. The amount of minus 0.5 mm material fed to plants varies, depending upon the type of coal and mining operation, but in Australia may range from less than ten per cent to greater than 30 per cent of the feed in higher rank coals.

Urban railway systems need high invest- ments, especially if their routes and stations have to be placed in the subsurface. In the FRG the construction and equipment cost of urban underground railway systems are in the range of 60 to 100 Mill DM per km tunnel. For this reason, track sections on the surface and on elevated structures are used as far as that is possible. Considering whole systems, the costs are in a range from to 45 Mill DM per km length for a metro system with about 80 % of its tracks and stations in tunnels and from 20 to 25 Mill DM per km for a light railway system with about 25 % subsurface infra= structure. The amount of route lengths in tunnels depends on the size of a city, the situation regarding above ground structure and free space on the surface, the level of service quality which has to be achieved with the railway system etc. Despite of the urgent needs to improve the transport conditions there very often arise doubts if an urban railway system is really necessary and can be justified in an economic sense. The experience from many cities around the world shows, that there arise a lot of benefits from urban railway systems, especially with larger sections placed under- ground. They are to be found in the interests of the operator (f.e. operating costs), the user (travel time, quality of service etc.) and regarding social aspects (environmental protection, accidents, consumption of energy Etc.).

Organic complexing agents have received special attention over the past few decades in the search for reagents for improved flotation separation of minerals, especially non-sulphides. The majority of such reagents that have been proposed over the past few decades have remained largely a laboratory curiosity, except perhaps alkyl hydroxamates, because their selection is seldom based on commercial viability. In this regard, the choice of complexing agents such as oximes may be more realistic because of their widespread use in solvent extraction of copper. Our earlier studies have confirmed that they are also effective as collectors for copper oxide minerals, including chrysocolla which is the most difficult copper mineral to beneficiate. The flotation behaviour of chrysocolla for several structurally-related hydroxyoximes were studied as a function of pH and oxime concentration and the role of structural features examined. The structural changes studied included substitutions in both chelating and non-chelating parts of the molecule. The results indicated that, contrary to expectations, many of the structural changes in the basic molecule, salicylaldoxime, do not have a positive effect on collector efficiency. The reduction in collector efficiency is rationalised on the basis of possible steric factors affecting complexation and packing of the collector species on the mineral surface as well as effects due to changes in electron density brought about by substituents. Introduction of alkyl substituents on the oximic carbon of salicylaldoxime yielded the highest collector efficiency.

There are many critical nodes along the mine value chain, from orebody to mineral product, and inter-disciplinary input is required to analyse the variability and uncertainty at each node in order to identify and mitigate areas of risk. Mining differs from many other industries in that the variability in the product is dictated largely by the inherent nature of the input material (the orebody). The true characteristics, including the variability of the orebody, are never known exactly and are instead based on estimates derived from sample data. A further difference is that bottom-line gains are largely controlled by world commodity prices, which can vary with time, rather than by local supply and demand issues. Methods for identifying, reporting and responding to this inherently variable raw material are discussed. These include analytical and reporting methods, equipment and software, risk analysis and reality checks (eg reconciliation). Sampling results, mineral resource and ore reserve estimates and economic assumptions are a function of the variability of the orebody. Risk quantification should be expressed as a level of confidence, which takes into account the scale or period over which the risk is being assessed (life-of-mine, annual or shorter production periods) and should convey the likelihood, severity and consequence of occurrence of a given event. The future generation of mining specialists needs to understand the entire mine value chain to better manage risks and maximise mine dollar-value.

Specifications on the types and levels of impurities tolerable in metals are becoming increasingly stringent, and are pushing the limits achievable with conventional refining technologies. Particularly difficult is the removal of electrochemically noble elements with low volatilities, such as copper, from more active host metals such as lead, iron and aluminium. Electrochemical refining, utilising the ability of certain solid electrolytes to selectively transport copper or other impurity cations away from the molten host metal into a separate refining phase, may provide an answer to this problem. Numerous studies on solid electrolytes used in concentration sensors have been reported, as well as a limited number on metal refining. Oxygen anion conducting solid electrolytes have been applied to the deoxidation of copper and steel while cation conductors, eg ¯ -alumina and Nasicon materials, have been used to remove lithium and sodium from aluminium. However, solid electrolytes have yet to be applied to the removal of noble elements. The behaviour of solid electrolytes under the extreme conditions of molten metal refining is not well understood. This paper will examine the potential use of solid electrolytes to remove noble metals such as copper from active host metals such as iron. The suitability, and selection criteria of available solid electrolytes for implementation in the metal refining industry in the future will be discussed. In particular, the stability of Cusicon, a copper superionic conductor potentially suitable for use in metal refining, has been assessed and the results of the experiments are presented.

In this paper, the use of topology preserving projections (Sammon maps) and neural networks are considered as a basis for the construction of multivariate statistical process control charts for a semi-autogenous grinding circuit on a gold plant. Comminution circuits are often operated in a quasi-steady state mode, where the mills tend to move rapidly from one state to another. This makes them difficult to monitor by conventional means designed for continuous steady state processes. As a first step, process data reflecting normal operating conditions are mapped with SammonÆs algorithm. Only one feature is extracted at a time and each mapping is captured by a neural network model to allow online application. Reverse neural network models are used to reconstruct the data prior to the extraction of subsequent features from the data residuals. The ensemble of neural network models can then be used for both fault detection and identification. The approach compared favourable with both linear and non-linear principal component models. It was able to detect two simulated fault conditions both with a reliability of 100 per cent, as opposed to 57.8 per cent and 95.2 per cent detected by an approach based on the use of linear principal component analysis and 84.1 per cent and 98.0 per cent detected by an approach based on non-linear principal components extracted with auto-associative neural networks.

Coal mining in the Bulli seam in the Southern Coalfield in New South Wales has experienced the dangers of outbursts of coal and gas. These incidents present a major risk to the safety of mine workers and consequently a threat to the overall viability of the mining operations. Since the occurrence of a major outburst incident in the South Bulli Colliery in 1991 involving three fatalities, the primary contributory factors associated with coal/gas outbursts in the Bulli coal seam have been identified and a strategy for the management of the outburst risk has been formulated by the cooperation of mine operators, mine workers and the Department of Mineral Resources. Utilisation of risk management techniques in combination with modern gas drainage technologies and geological control methods have led to the formation of this effective outburst management plan. Clause 15 of the Coal Mines (Underground) Regulation 1999 in NSW has made it mandatory in an area of outburst to carry out mining in accordance with a code or guidelines developed for mining in outburst prone areas (DMR, 1999). In this paper an outburst management system is discussed which was developed for collieries in the Southern Coalfield that brings together all the available information including past experiences and risk management techniques in a documented form in order to maximise safety of mine workers. It is concluded that since the introduction of the outburst risk management systems in the Southern Coalfield in 1994 considerable reduction in outburst incidences have been experienced.

The distribution of a contaminant in a bulk mass greatly influences the effectiveness of sampling procedures. Most currently used sampling guidelines for genetically modified organisms (GMO) testing have stringent distribution requirements. Specifically, all these protocols are based upon the assumption that GM material, if present, is randomly distributed. Yet, assuming randomness is risky because the applied sampling plan may not provide an accurate estimate of the content of the contaminant. Despite the general consensus that an evaluation of the possibility of non-random distribution of GM materials within lots is a pre-requisite for the definition of effective sampling protocols, no experimental data on the distribution of GMOs in kernel lots are available anywhere in the world. Additionally, to date there is no distribution-free statistical model to estimate sampling errors, thus making the theoretical definition of optimal sampling technique impossible when randomness cannot be assumed. Here we present preliminary results of the KeLDA project, which is the first study investigating the distribution of GM materials in large soybean lots imported within the European Union. The extensive variability of GM content, observable both within and among soybean lots, indicates that heterogeneity issues cannot be overlooked when defining sampling strategies for large lots of particulate material and that randomness cannot be assumed a priori. A new statistical model free from any distribution assumptions, developed in order to estimate the sampling error associated with different sampling protocols together with the risk of false-negative results, is also presented. The new model, which is applicable to any consignment of particulate material with respect to any kind of contamination, presents two novelties: first, freedom from any distribution assumption; second, the possibility of estimating the magnitude of the sampling error associated with different sampling protocols as a function of specific distributional properties.

As part of an overall strategy to make significant new technological advances for the sustainability of the mineral processing and related process industries CSIRO Minerals has developed a new dry separation device. It represents a technology breakthrough and has the potential to radically change the way in which dry particle size classification is achieved in the minerals industry. Conventional dry separation techniques have limited applications and often suffer from low productivity, high operating costs, low separation efficiency, the need for dust control and a lack of flexibility. In the absence of efficient dry techniques, wet processing is often used. The use of wet processing either requires the introduction of water into a separation process, which causes environmental concerns through the need for water supply and tailings dams or the use of æunfriendlyÆ chemicals for dense media separations that have considerable impact on handling and disposal. Wet processing also increases operating costs due to plant instability, materials handling, thickening, filtration and product drying. The new CSIRO technology exploits a combination of natural and applied forces to achieve specific particle motions that produce size separation. In doing so, many of the traditional shortcomings of dry separation have been overcome. The CSIRO Dry Particle Size Separator is ideally suited for dry size separation applications within the size range 1 mm to 30 ¦mfor moderate moisture levels (2 per cent), have low unit throughput, produce a fixed cut size and are therefore impractical where very high unit capacity and low operating costs are required. This paper presents a review of dry separation devices together with details of the new Dry Particle Size Separator and typical results for a number of materials, including iron ore and quarry dust.

Risk assessment in the mining industry is currently a topic of great interest with risk methodologies being increasingly applied beyond the traditional areas of finance and feasibility to analyses of risks due to various physical hazards including chemical, electrical, mechanical and geotechnical sources. The application of risk analysis and evaluation techniques to the management of personnel safety is being promoted by both industry and regulators but, particularly for geotechnical hazards, often there are inadequate databases for a meaningful quantitative calculation of risk. In Western Australia over the decade 1987 - 1997, the annual fatality rate for underground mining has averaged at approximately 1.3 in 1000 employees with rockfalls/rockbursts accounting for over half of these deaths (Prevention of Mining Fatalities Taskforce, 1997). Recent improvements have been made since this time, perhaps halving the annual fatality rate, mainly due to industry improving ground control measures and implementing various recommendations from the Prevention of Mining Fatalities Taskforce (1997). However there still remain a large number of unknowns when trying to address the complex area of geotechnical risk in mining. Risk calculations require information about the source of the hazard, the people or assets exposed to the hazard (the æelements at riskÆ) and the effects on these vulnerable elements if the hazard actually occurs (the potential consequences). To date, little information has been available on the exposure of mining personnel and equipment to underground hazards other than occupational safety studies on chemicals, heat, dust, etc. This paper concentrates on underground geotechnical risks and presents a data collection and rating system for the exposure of both the underground workforce and equipment to rockfalls and rockbursts. The methodology considers exposure times, personnel protection levels and hazard proximities to give exposure ratings for the major underground mining activities and hence rate different locations within a mine. This exposure methodology is then applied to the workforce and production/ development cycles in an actual WA underground mine, creating a snapshot map of differing levels of personnel exposure across the mine.

This paper reviews some of the factors thought to control the formation of supergene gold in the Pacific and its Rim. Discussion of these should lead to reassessment of the economic potential of many areas. In several parts of the world many gold-bearing veins display rich gold values only in the oxidized zone, whereas beneath the present (or ancient) watertable the unaltered vein commonly holds only sub-economic refractory low grade sulphides or arsenides. In the Eastern Highlands of Australia some of the most spectacular concentrations of - gold have been found at shallow depths. For example, Harper (1918) describes the Canton mine in New South Wales which was stoped over a length of 180 metres from the 45 metre level to the surface. The reef yielded gold at 300 g/t in the upper levels, but became gradually poorer at depth. Present geologists of N.S.W. Geol. Survey, G.R. Mcllveen and B.P.J. Stevens, believe that many similar Australian enrichments were formed between the surface and its ancient water table level during the extended period of weathering in the Eocene or pre-Eocene. They concede, however, that further supergene movement of gold may have occurred since the early Tertiary. Large quantities of Mesozoic supergene gold of extreme fineness (Au 99.7%, Cu +òFe 0.3%; Leibius 1885) was found at Mt. Morgan near the Tropic of Capricorn in Queensland. Lower Jurassic sediments cover part of the gossan in a small depression caused by oxidation and collapse of the Main Pipe, thus showing that the supergene gold is pre-Lower Jurassic (Cornelius, 1968). Because the Lower Jurassic landscape around Mt. Morgan was mature with a surface slope of less than 10 (Playford and Cornelius, 1967), erosion would have been very slow. Moreover, once all sulphides had been removed from the ore body the Lower Jurassic environment would have reverted from highly acid to alkaline as it is at present. Accordingly, gold, goethite and 1. Exposed, open pit mine highwalls contribute significantly to the production of acid mine drainage (AMD) thus causing environmental concerns upon closure of an operating mine. Four innovative technologies were evaluated under the US Environmental Protection AgencyÆs, Mine Waste Technology (MWTP), Prevention of AMD Generation from Open Pit Highwalls Demonstration Project. This project is funded by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and jointly administered by the EPA and the US Department of Energy (DOE) through an Interagency Agreement. The objective of the field demonstration was to evaluate the technologies ability to decrease or eliminate acid generation from treated areas of the highwall in comparison an untreated highwall area. The field demonstration was performed at the Golden Sunlight Mine (GSM) a subsidiary of Placer Dome US, located near Whitehall, Montana. GSM is an operating gold mine. The highwall at GSM was divided into five plots measuring 15.24 by 15.24 m and each technology was assigned a plot with the fifth plot being used for comparison as a background control plot. The four technologies were spray-applied. The applied in situ treatment technologies included: a modified, furfuryl alcohol resin sealant, utilising wood and agricultural by-products to coat the rock surface; EcobondTM ARD, a phosphate based process that forms a stable, insoluble compound, coating the rock surface; and two AMD passivation technologies, magnesium oxide and the Dupont technology developed to create an inert layer/coating on the pyrite, preventing oxidation. The technologies were evaluated using the following methods: ASTM D 5744-96, accelerated weathering of solid materials using a modified humidity cells; mine wall residual wall rinse sampling; microscopy; and core drilling followed by water injection testing. The following paper describes the technologies used for passivation of acid generation from the highwall, the field demonstration, and the testing results from the background and each technology plot.

Performance driver trees or KPI trees are reasonably well-known tools for analysing performance in mining operations. However, the tools are often not user friendly. They may be technically correct but they are often clunky. This means they donÆt promote simple management decision-making and donÆt encourage businesses to make them an integrated part of optimising their operations. This paper describes a simple but effective driver tree process and tool that has been successfully implemented and used to aid decision making across a number of mining and processing operations. The important aspects of employing driver trees to assist in management of operations are to ensure that the chosen solution:includes a reporting solution, provides the bottom line impact of the performance indicators, automatically gathers the necessary data that reconciles with existing reports, and is built around a review process that fits with existing management processes. An adequate solution enables operators to identify where there are performance gaps and to quickly prioritise the urgency for addressing these issues. Two case studies are chosen to illustrate the critical success factors of implementing a performance driver tree solution. The first is a large, complex open pit operation. The driver trees, reporting and management processes were initially established for the mining and processing aspects of the operations. Once the initial solution was bedded down, a follow-up project was carried out to establish the equivalent solution for the support areas of the business. The final solution covered stand alone performance driver trees for mining, processing, engineering, maintenance, health and safety, human resources and finance. These individual driver trees were integrated into a total solution that showed how all of the identified KPIÆs impact profit and quantified the dollar impact of all variations. The reporting solution that was put in place automatically creates prioritised lists of variances for the business to address. The second case study is a performance diagnostic project where driver trees were used to assess where gaps in performance were occurring, and then to evaluate the impacts of proposed initiatives.

The object of this paper is not to describe any particular type of engine in close technical detail but rather to give a general picture of past and present practice in this important section of the industry. The subject involves the study of almost 600 years of coal mining history which has fluctuated from stagnation to extremely rapid progress.Up to the year 1300, coal was obtained from outcrops and exposed beds, but this easily worked source soon gave out, so by that time shafts had to be sunk to the coal seams, and coal mining proper commenced its career.These early shafts were very shallow, and winding equipment was not a matter for much concern. Raising coal was generally achieved by human labour, which was called "coal bearing." Coal was loaded into baskets. strapped to a man's back, and carried from the underground workings to the pit bottom. The unfortunate individual then climbed ladders to the top of the shaft, unloaded the basket, and descended the shaft for the next load. Mining professionals recognise the need and application for reconciliation and value tracking. It is necessary however to examine our current reality, and evaluate the following. Do our reconciliations really balance correctly, and are we able to track value effectively throughout processes? If we are honest, in most operations the answer is a resounding no. This means that we are surrounded by fluctuation and deviations that we do not account for and do not understand. This is astounding, because given our level of scientific knowledge and the technological tools at our disposal we should have a good understanding of our environments and be able to manage them effectively. How do we manage effectively if we are surrounded by so much uncertainty? The purpose of this paper is to describe, at high level, the principles of reconciliation and value tracking, to highlight some areas where deviations are introduced into the mining process, and to propose a different approach to the apparent reconciliation and value tracking conundrum. The paper also poses several questions that need to be critically addressed at most operations. Instead of making the same mistakes each month in reconciliations, mining professionals need to acknowledge two facts. Firstly there will be uncertainty that we need to accept, since all our estimates are based on sampling, an orebody is not homogeneous and peopleÆs behaviour will influence the process, etc. Variability will always exist and lead to uncertainty. What is the current approach in the reconciliation process when a deviation occurs and how do we use reconciliation and value tracking to manage and improve our business? The second fact is that we need to stop using reconciliation and value tracking to only measure and report. We need to adopt a new approach to manage mining throughput, where reconciliation and value tracking are enablers to the success of the business. In most mining operations, significant effort goes into planning and measurement for the purposes of reconciliation and value tracking. The importance of accurate and effective reconciliation and value tracking should be to ensure the maximum utilisation of the resource, maximising throughput and enabling the business to deliver a product to its client, of the correct quality and in a timely manner.
