Traditionally mining and conservation have been regarded as opposing and mutually exclusive concepts of land use. Often problems are anticipated which cannot be substantiated by facts. In addition, an ill defined time-scale adds to potentially emotive issues. Examples from Australia and elsewhere are presented which illustrate the dynamic nature of the environment and accentuate sequence patterns in plant community development following natural and man-made disturbances. The mining industry generally appears to be aware of the environmental impact of mining and whilst endeavouring to minimise the disturbance, is still orientated towards maximum production.

The Electricity Commission of New South Wales operates three power stations located on Lake Macquarie and Lake Munmorah. Coal for these power stations is supplied by three collieries operated by the Electricity Commission, three operated by the State Mines Control Authorityrand one privately owned. Most of the coal used in these power stations is won from the Great Northern seam which lies at depths of up to 220 ft at Awaba and at depths of the order of 600 ft at the remaining mines on the southern end of the field.

The mine planning process is reviewed and appropriate software considered in terms of "line process" or "support function". The mine planner's requirements of a geological model and the elements of and requirements of a computerised mine planning system are all discussed. The use of "support" software for mine planning is considered and general rules for its development are given. Fluidised Bed Combustion technology has expanded since the first fluidised bed boiler steamed in 1974 with 58 companies currently supplying units. In Australia the market has been in small boilers and the goal of a limited attendance coal fired boiler has been achieved. On the world scene, the major incentive for development has been emission control with sulphur capture and low NOX. The potential of significant reduction in plant size is encouraging development of pressurised fluidised bed combustion.

The fundamental natural ingredient of any mining development is an ore reserve. The classical definition of an ore reserve has both technical and commercial components, each involving elements of risk. By definition the desposit must contain mineral values which are "extractable at a profit". Metallurgy supplies a vital link between these two basic requirements of a successful mining project; the metallurgical input establishes the process by which the contained minerals may be recovered and converted into marketable product(s).

Despite improving technology, better training and the use of modern monitoring and communication systems there is a disproportionate rate of diameter occurrences in the mining industry. I am honoured to have been asked by Sir James Foots, the President of the Congress Organising Committee, to open this, the 13th Congress of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions. The theme you will be addressing over the next few days is "The Twenty First Century - Mining, for Mankind" - a theme that must be regarded as an enormous challenge for the entire minerals industry. Previous conferences, starting in 1924 in London and followed by two others in the United Kingdom, have also taken place in Canada (three), Southern Africa (three), Australasia (two), and Hong Kong (one), but this is the first to be held in Singapore.

It is a great privilege to be invited to give this address at this centenary conference. A centenary is a time for recollection, for celebration and for looking ahead. The AusIMM has much to celebrate and many things to recall. I hope in this address to make some useful comments about Australia's future (and mindful of but not forgetting New Zealand), looking ahead for 25 years or so, and the mining industry's role in that future.

The different stages of the metallurgical evaluation of an ore resource and their importance to overall project evaluation are described. Particular emphasis is placed on the liaison that is necessary between the different members of the project team from the preliminary exploration phase through to the completion of the final feasibility study. Metallurgical input at the earliest stage is recommended. The incorporation of metallurgical and marketing data into ore reserve statements and the effect of the metallurgical evaluation on ore reserve classifications are discussed.

The perennial challenge facing mining and minerals operators is to improve productivity, usually by a combination of cost reduction and performance improvement. In a typical production situation involving mining and processing activities, the standard approach has long been to seek improvements in each activity, effectively in isolation from each other. However, the realisation is growing that there is considerable potential to achieve really substantial productivity gains by much improved integration of mining and processing with the key being to consider what is best in the total sense. Some of the linkages between fragmentation in mining and downstream processing are considered in this paper. These linkages involve technical, operational and economic Considerations.

The New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited (NBHC) mine currently produces 1.42 million tonnes of silver, lead and zinc ore annually. All of this ore is treated by the NBHC milling ccx[plex. This paper describes the crushing, grinding, flotation and filtration circuits used in the treatment of this ore and lists the major items of equignent used in these circuits. Metallurgical results, manning levels and consumption rates of reagents and grinding media are shown.

This presentation opens with a definition of technology and how it is implemented. The expenditure and progress on R&D in the mining industry is then investigated and found to be difficult to quantify. The needs and interests of that industry including contribution to this Congress are examined and it is concluded that short-term rather than long-term goals seem to be prevalent. The presentation concludes with the opinion that the answer to the question in the title is both affirmative and negative but overall there is a need for the mining industry to become more innovative.

The conversion relationship between the Bond Work Index W1, specific output of mill and the energy efficiency of grinding were developed using dimensional analysis. These relationships were validated and the value of the conversion coefficient ~ was also obtained using a new installed device for measuring grindability of ores. With the new simulating algorithm the mill specifications, output and size distribution of grinding products of industrial mills can be calculated based on laboratory measured results. The resurgence of mining over the last 30 years has coincided with a growing awareness in the community of the importance of environmental protection and conservation. This involves a growing concern about environmental degradation, an increasing desire for the setting-aside of natural areas for wilderness preservation, accelerating pressures for the return of large areas of Crown land to Aboriginal ownership and a widening view that economic growth itself may be undesirable (Burton, 1987). This has lead to much public debate over the implementation of sound environmental policies to achieve a balance between economic necessities and ecological goals.

As previously advised, two of the raw materials for Wilsons Portland Cement are cement rock and limestone, both of which are quarried by the company. We now wish to give you a brief outline of these operations. The major material, cement rock, is obtained for our Portland Quarry at Tikorangi Hill, which is one mile west of the Works and a familiar landmark to travellers on state Highway 1. The geological structure of this deposit is involved, having intensive and irregular earth movements interpreted as large scale slumps where older rocks overlay younger rocks - numerous folds, faults and overthrusts are clearly visible.

The principles of chromatographic and electrophoretic separations are described in simple non-mathematical language. Brief details of the analytical procedures and of equipment are given. Partial analyses of rare earth elements in monazites from four localit- ies in New South Wales are compared with analyses from other localities. D.atailed examination has shown many variations of .section, has established the general basement trends and sedimentary thicknesses, has shown that much more of the section is marine than previously thought ~nd has indicated that any reservoirs throughout the section could be potential oil ind/or gas producers if suitable traps are located.
