Geological models for the exploration and evaluation of epithermal Au and porphyry Cu-Au deposits rely upon a classification of different deposit styles and an understanding of the evolutionary processes of deposit formation. These models guide the interpretation of subsurface deposit anatomy in order to target drill testing and assist the explorationist to focus on the more prospective projects. It is important for the explorationist to distinguish between different styles of magmatic arc Au deposits as each style displays distinctive characteristics with exploration implications. Magmatic arc Au deposits are distinguished as porphyry Cu-Au formed at depths of 1 - 2 km at the apophysis to larger, buried, magmatic sources which are also the ultimate metal sources for the varying styles of shallower level epithermal Au deposits. Low sulfidation epithermal Au deposits characteristically develop from dilute circulating meteoric waters and are distinguished as the group with a closer relationship to intrusive source rocks, and slightly higher sulfide contents (still generally

The Paddington project is a gold mining and processing operation located 35 km north of Kalgoorlie in the Eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia (Figure 1). The project, which is operated by Pancontinental Goldmining Areas Pty Ltd, treats 1.25 Mtpa of oxidised gold ore, derived mainly from open cuts adjacent to the plant, with minor tonnages from other pits in the region treated on a custom-milling basis. Gold is recovered using a conventional CIL process. The process raw water supply of 3 500 kUd is derived from the local groundwater system. Average salinity of the raw water is around 90 000 - 100 000 mg/L total dissolved solids. A small portion of the raw water is passed through a vacuum distillation desalination plant to produce the project's 200 kUd requirement for high quality water for potable use and gold recovery.

The experimental phosphate mine of abu Tartur has been recently placed into production. Some problems'have been encountered in maintai- ning grade control due to the differences between early block estimates and actual produ- ction grade. An area of 100 km2 is evaluated by using four methods of evaluation , namely polygonal, inverse distance , inverse distance squared and geostatistical methods. The results of calculations are compared statistically with the control values of grade and thickness. The comparison showed that the. kriging technique gave better estimations for the relative ore reserved, while for grades or thickness any of these techniques except the polygonal can be Used.

The integration of environmental and permitting strategies into development has become a routine part of doing business for the international minerals industry. Paralleling the development schedule with the environmental and permitting schedule is critical to ensuring that design recognises environmental constraints and that the environmental and permitting program has the right focus and achieves the objective of obtaining workable permits that reflect the project design. Regulatory issues including the law of and controls established by the country the project is situated in, the requirements of international financing institutions, international politics and the role of environmental groups and the particular precedents and processes established are all important issues that must be recognised and incorporated into the permitting program by the developer. Technical issues including collecting early environmental data during exploration, establishing hydro-meteorology equipment, baseline data gathering, and getting good environmental engineering information as a part of feasibility and design are also critical issues to the success of a project which are under the direct control of the developer. Finally tying all of these issues into a single integrated strategy under the direction and control of a nominated team is necessary to maintain focus and achieve results.

The accurate determination of trace level gold in ores, metallurgical samples and process solutions is required because of the value of gold, the efficiency of the cyanide leach process and because of the high gold recovery from these cyanide solutions. It is thus necessary to routinely analyse geological and metallurgical samples with gold concentrations of 3 g tonne (ug g- 1ppm) and process solutions with a gold concentration of 0.01 mgL 1 (ppm) preferably with sufficient accuracy to quote at least two significant figures. Several techniques have been reviewed for their suitability for the routine gold analysis of these samples which also contain signif- icant concentrations of other ions. The classic fire assay technique has achieved the respect and confidence of mining personnel because of the results achieved by very experienced assayers. Other extraction and concentration techniques have now been shown to be equally effective. The use of instrumental analytical techniques particularly atomic absorption spectrometry have shown that cheaper procedures, which are as reliable, are now available to gold producers for the routine analysis required to maintain an efficient gold recovery process.

The basic principles of mineral valuation were recognised and propounded at the beginning of this century and have remained virtually unchanged since then. Valuation is seen as a two part process commencing with a technical examination of the mineral property followed by a manipulation of the results of the technical examination in order to determine the monetary value of the project. A thorough and competent technical examination was seen then and remains now as the essential but not sufficient foundation for reliable valuation. All authors stressed the need to maintain the integrity of the data base and to ensure adequate coverage of all relevant aspects. The monetary valuation process through most of the first half of this century was mainly based on the Hoskold two rate method, derived from the formulae for valuing annuities but modified to provide explicitly for recovery of capital. Though the basic principles of valuation have not changed significantly, the means of implementing the components of the technical examination, the styles of deposits being evaluated and the mechanisms of monetary valuation have changed dramatically. Despite all the technological improvements, however, mineral valuations are still as apt to vary from realised performance as at any time in the past. As well, mineral property valuations are now being extended to cover all assets of potential value, including valuation of exploration tenements with or without identified resources. Valuation of exploration tenements will continue to be one of the most difficult and contentious of valuation tasks.

Ventilation characteristics and the occurrence of nocturnal surface inversions have been investigated within the Mount Whaleback open cut iron ore mine at Newman in Western Australia. When winds are light and/or nocturnal surface inversions form within the pit, episodes of atmospheric stagnation can occur with resultant accumulation of dust, diesel exhaust fumes, and sulphur dioxide evolved from spontaneous combustion of pyritic shale. Nocturnal surface inversions were recorded outside the mine on more than two-thirds of nights. Inside the pit, inversions were much less frequent - occurring on roughly 20% of nights when they were observed outside - and much weaker - the maximum temperature difference being 5 C¦ over 210 m inside the pit compared with 15 C¦ over 150 m outside.

German coal mining suffers from rock temperatures up to 600C which are the same as in South Africa at 3000 - 4000 m of depth. Therefore cooling plants have increased in the last decade and today a cooling power of nearly 200 MW is installed in the total Ruhr District. Cooling a mine is a little bit different from cooling a bottle of beer in a refrigerator in the kitchen because the heat taken from the bottle of beer is delivered to the kitchen some centimetres away; in mining the cooling-problem is more difficult: here the bottle of beer corresponds to the airflow at the coal face and the kitchen to the surface, So it is necessary to transport the heat or the "coldness" a long distance. In the address by Ieuan Morris some systems for transporting heat from the coalface to the evaporator of the cooling machine and further from the condenser of the machine to a return airflow were described. The following is a short idea of the way this problem is treated in Germany.

Geometallurgical modelling is now a hot topic in deposit evaluation and in optimising mine performance; however, its history is long and varied. Historically metallurgical sampling has frequently suffered from a lack of data due to the cost of producing representative bulk samples. In the early 1990s geometallurgical modelling similarly suffered from a lack of data due to complex, time consuming and expensive sampling techniques. More recently, simple and relatively cheap tests for geometallurgical variables such as hardness, grindability, throughput, SAG power index, bond work index, crushing index, mineral recovery and concentrate grade have become widespread. The cheaper sampling has resulted in relatively large geometallurgical databases. However, most of the geometallurgical variables sampled are implicitly (and incorrectly) assumed to be additive when modelled by traditional geostatistical techniques, often leading to ill-informed and costly decisions. Geometallurgical variables are mostly non-additive so the current geostatistical challenge is to develop new approaches to dealing with this type of data. This paper briefly describes a historical case study of geometallurgical modelling of the George Fisher Pb-Zn mine completed in the mid 1990s, then outlines some of the current misconceptions of geometallurgical data and modelling techniques regularly applied to it, and finally discusses some recent developments in geometallurgical modelling, with examples from a number of current clients indicating the direction forward.

With some notable exceptions, marine placers located just below, or just above, present sea level, are responsible for much of today's production of detrital ilmenite, rutile, zircon, and other minerals of value. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the paleogeographic and paleo-oceanographic factors which may have determined the location of presently submerged marine placers. These factors-include changes in sea level, burial by recent marine sediments, stream capture and other i changes in drainage patterns, and recent changes in climate. Selected geologic situations in the Yellow Sea off the coast of Korea, in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Portugal, in the Bering Sea off the coast of Alaska, and in the Arabian Sea off the coast of India, will be used to illustrate the author's point of view.

A systematic approach to the collection, presentation and application of structural geology data is employed in the extraction of narrow en echelon Ag-Pb-Zn orebodies by rut and fill stoping at Mount Isa. The aim is to locate, document and predict areas of adverse ground thereby enabling adequate ground support to be installed in advance of production mining. The important structural features are identified and their relevance illustrated by case histories of previous failures. The methods of collection, documentation and application of data are discussed.

The New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources objective is to use data and information to undertake a detailed analysis of incidents and accidents to identify risks so that the predictable can be foreseen and avoided. The Department of Mineral Resources has established a computerised database called COMET (COmmon Mines EnvironmenT) to capture information on accidents incidents, inspections, audits and accreditation in improving safety and environment performance. This data together with data from Coal Mines Insurance and WorkCover NSW is being used to provide trend and comparison information. The NSW Injury Risk Management Research Centre at the University of NSW has been engaged by the Department to collate and prepare a detailed analysis of the data. Through this process, five areas have been identified for further research. These being: electrical energy, mechanical equipment, work environment, hours of work, and contractors involvement accident and incidents. The paper covers: the establishment of a mix of performance measures for the industry to indicate whether the safety performance is improving; the provision of data to provide useful comparisons and benchmarks against which companies can compare performance; the development of positive performance measures; the findings and outcomes of the detailed analysis of electrical energy; shocks; the provision of information to industry; an outline how the data is being used to determine departmental; operational priorities; and future plans to undertake research into the other areas identified.

Mechanical cleaning of coal was porforined in a few small plants in New South Wales from 1577 brit the first large coal washeries were built by Broken Hill Wbprietary Company Limited and Australian Iron and Steel Pty. Limited in the late 1940's. Mechanization of colleries in the 1950bs was abcomp" anied by construction of many coal washing plants and in the 1960's the growth of the coal export trade gave further impetus to the coal preparation industry. Design of coal preparation plants in Australia is modelled on practice overseas. Planning of a new plant in- volves investigation of many factors both technical and economic and the preparation of a specification by the operator for the designer's guidance. A wide range of preparation processes and equipment is on offer, but the nature of the coal to be treated and the separating efficiency desired usually dictate process selection. Simple or moderately difficult separation can be achieved with jigs, shaking tables or water washing cyclones. Coal which is difficult to treat or which has to be cut at a specific gravity lower than 1.5 is normally washed in a heavy medium process. In large plants it is usual to separate the coal into large, small and fine fractions and concentrate each fraction in a circuit designed to suit the grain size handled.

The LaModel program was initially developed in 1993, and it is used to model the stresses and displacements in thin tabular deposits such as coal seams. It uses the displacement-discontinuity variation of the boundary-element method with a simplified laminated overburden model and because of this formulation, it is able to quickly and effectively analyse large areas of single- or multiple-seam mines. Over the last couple of decades, LaModel has been used by many mine engineers and researchers for improving pillar designs and mine safety, and it has been continually updated to add functionality and improve its ease of use and accuracy. The present LaModel can calculate seam displacements and overburden, multiple-seam and total seam stresses, pillar safety factors, energy values, roof-bending stresses, fault effects and surface subsidence. It can automatically generate the mine and overburden grids from AutoCAD drawings, and it includes wizards for automatically generating Bieniawski strength coal pillars, easily calibrating the overburden properties to observed abutment stresses and calibrating the gob material to expected gob loading. This paper will present the formulation and features of the modern LaModel program and demonstrate its utility with a multiple-seam case study from the rugged topography in Southern Appalachia.CITATION:Heasley, K A, 2014. With the recent wider introduction of friction hoists of the Koepe type. for winding from depths of more than 3000 feet it has been found that failure by fatigue is the most common form of rope deterioration. Large numbers of wire breaks occur near the centre of the rope cross-section and it is difficult to detect these with certainty using the preferred d.c. magnetic test. For best results with conventional search coils their dimen- sions should be related to the typical wire break field pattern surrounding the longitudionally magnetised rope. The field of a broken wire was experimentally determined, using a Polish type MD6 Defectograph wire rope testing magnet and a short prepared length of rope with a movable simulated broken wire. The external field distortion perpendicular to the rope was measured by means of a gaussmeter and Hall probe. The advantages of this method are that terrestial magnetism and inherent rope "noise" have no effect on the results.

The Kalahari Manganese Deposit in South Africa accounts for 80 per cent of the worldÆs land-based mineable Mn reserves. Although the ores are primarily mined for export, South Africa is the worldÆs third largest producer of ferromanganese and ferrosilicomanganese alloy, both of which are derived from the smelting of these ores. Mineralogical analysis has traditionally been forsaken for bulk chemical assaying in quality control of smelter feeds, principally because quantitative data could not be easily produced. Yet, mineralogy plays a vital role in determining smelting behaviour, which in turn has economic implications when aspects such as energy and reductant consumption are considered. Smelting is an endothermic process, and the amount of energy input required is dependent on the minerals present in the ore, as well as their relative proportions. Further, knowing the bulk Mn oxidation state in the ores allows for calculation of the amount of oxygen that must be driven off to produce alloy, and hence the amount of reductant required. Additionally, certain minerals can be correlated with potentially deleterious elements, so that ore mineralogy can indicate penalty element distribution. Mineral abundance analysis was conducted on ores from the Kalahari Manganese Deposit using quantitative X-ray powder diffraction. Rietveld refinement using a fundamental parameters approach was applied to micronised ore samples. The mineral percentages obtained were validated using mineral chemical data together with bulk major element data derived from ICP-OES. Bulk oxidation state partitioning was then carried out knowing the Mn valence in the minerals. The results show potential for implementation of the proposed method on a smelting plant, where ore blending could be then implemented to achieve consistent feed compositions to smelters. Selective mining could also be undertaken to obtain desirable ore compositions for domestic or international markets.

Mining regulatory authorities worldwide mandate frequent inspection of winder ropes used in shaft-equipped underground mines and ski lifts. Visual inspections are effective in identifying and assessing the type and severity of damage found in the exterior of the rope. In addition, electromagnetic or permanent magnet-based methods are used to identify broken wires, corrosion damage and other anomalies that occur anywhere within the core of wire ropes made of steel, which is a ferromagnetic material. The magnetic methods yield the loss of metallic area due to wire breaks and other damage in the ropeÆs section as well as local flaws that give rise to discontinuities in the magnetic field. The quantitative measurement of the loss of metallic area is indirectly related to the loss of breaking strength that is commonly used as a rope discard criterion. The ropes used in a mine winder in the Goldfields of Western Australia are inspected using Meraster 120B permanent magnet-based rope tester and their condition is assessed against published discard criteria.

This is the second of a series of papers dealing with Geology in Exploration. The first, published by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, Proceedings Nos. 143-144, 1946, was written as an introduction to the subject and employed the exploration geology of the Cobar field to illustrate the prospect thinking. This paper will be concerned with the problem of ore repetition in depth and borrow its- example from the Mount Lyell copper field. The writing will be taken up altogether by the example. Nevertheless the intention remains to develop the subject in terms of its wide interest and application.The Mount Lyell field possesses large actual and prospective resources within, and in the vicinity of, the known deposits. This paper does not bear at all on these accessible ore reserves and tangible prospects. There is also in this area evidence of deep ore. The possibility is of little practical interest at present. But the picture of ore repetition, exemplified by the Mount Lyell field, does matter now to the outlook on exploration in this country. For once this essential feature of ore occurrence is widely understood there may develop, on the scale warranted, the search for major deposits which do not outcrop but which are still at shallow depths because of the part erosion plays in this story of concealment and exposure of ore. Also there is the chance in some fields (including Mount Lyell) of a second harvest of orebodies within mineable depths. This exploration goal, introduced in the first paper, will appear more clearly as the Geology in Exploration series is written up. Here the concern is to show the character of the geological evidence which points to the occurrence and recurrence of ore in the earth's crust, the picture at the foundation of this exploration scheme. The West Coast of South Africa is well known for its placer gem quality diamond deposits and also associated with these hosts of Cenozoic unconsolidated marine and aeolian sand and gravel are significant concentrations of heavy minerals. Exploration for economic concentrations of zircon, ilmenite and rutile along the coast started in the mid-1980s. This resulted in the discovery of an inferred 1.6 billion tonne resource with a grade of ten per cent total heavy minerals (THM), which developed into the Namakwa Sands Mine, a world-class producer of heavy minerals. Several other resources, including satellite deposits proximal and distal to the mine area, extensive diamond mine dumps and present day beach placers, demonstrate the vast heavy mineral potential along the West Coast. The favourable gangue to economic mineral ratio, a higher zircon content compared to other similar deposits, relatively lower U+TH content of zircon, low slimes content and effectively pristine low chromium-manganese ilmenite of these deposits, render them attractive exploration targets. Negative factors that will affect conventional mineral beneficiation and liberation include secondary mineral coatings and the regional coastal development of several layers of superimposed duricrust. The economically attractive heavy mineral assemblage along the West Coast is the result of erosion of the proximal, gneissic Namaqualand Metamorphic Province and mature Table Mountain Group sandstone, concentration by marine and aeolian processes and preservation under arid climatological conditions over a period of more than 100 Ma.

There was a time, in the memory of some here tonight, when the annual meeting of The Institute was a nostalgic occasion. Often, in the 1920s, there was comment on the decline of Australian mining and on the lack of new mineral discoveries. When some of our Presidents prayed then for a new Bendigo, and instead were given a Mount Isa, they were justifiably disappointed because of the vastly different capital requirements.In 1967 the mining picture is very different. The recent mining developments in Australia are certainly as important as several Bendigos and several Kalgoorlies. The mining industry in Australia has never been more dynamic than today (Table 1). And if we ask why it is so dynamic, the answer lies in the role which overseas capital is playing in the industry. The contribution of overseas capital should concern us not only because we are members of the mining and metallurgical profession, but also because we have a duty to make our profession contribute as much as possible to the well-being of Australians. It is not sufficient to argue that overseas capital is good for the mining industry; we must also examine whether it is good for the economy and the nation. In this context the current criticism of the inflow of overseas capital into Australian mining is useful, for it gives us an opportunity to see what has resulted from the inflow.In discussing this question I do not suggest that we emulate Captain Hancock, that legendary Moonta mine manager who, according to Oswald Pryor's cartoon, used to say to his miners: "When I say a thing is, it is, even if it isn't". The question can only be discussed on a factual basis; and I would submit that many of the important facts relating to overseas capital in our mining industry are often overlooked or ignored. I would further submit, on the basis of these facts, that Australia's present day mining industry has been largely built on overseas capital and that the overall benefits of that capital to Australia have been enormous.
