Study on Mechanism of Sphalerite Flotation in the Presence of Main Metal Ions by Molecular Mechanics

A rotating disc geometry was used to provide a uniformly accessible surface for a kinetic study of copper cementation with zinc in sulphate solution. For copper concentrations of the order of 10 p.p.m., a porous, adherent deposit is formed on the zinc surface and this has a significant influence on the reaction rate. When the specific mass of deposit is less than about O· 35 mg/cm2 the surface may be considered as smooth and the rate is described by simple convective counter diffusion of zinc and copper ions through a laminar diffusion boundary layer to the deposit-solution interface. In the presence of additional deposit, the diffusional mass transfer rate is increased by increased surface roughness.The rate under these conditions is first order, with the degree of enhancement independent of further increases in the specific deposit mass. THE Australian States and New Zealand have for many years provided instruction in mining, metallurgy, geology, and their allied subjects through their Universities and Schools of Mines. Though such education has been provided at considerable expenditure, there is no legal recognition whatever given to the holders of degrees, diplomas, or certificates granted by the authorities controlling these educational institutions. Certain of the, Australian States and New Zealand require, however, that mine managers and other officials employed by the mining industry shall 'hold' certificates granted by their respective Mines Departments.The position at present is that each educational institution is practically a law unto itself, and therefore in many ways there is a want of uniformity amongst institutions all aiming at the same result the training of mining men. The Newcrest Mining Limited Cadia East Panel Cave mines near Orange, New South Wales, Australia commenced production 1200 m below the surface in May 2014. Understanding the mine-wide impact caving had on excavation stability was a primary objective to ensure a safe working environment as production ramped up in the Panel Cave 1 operation and establishment activities were implemented in Panel Cave 2. The impact of cave interaction between Panel Cave 1 and Panel Cave 2 and establishing monitoring systems to assist mine planning and production as both caves joined is explained in this paper. Monitoring tools such as a microseismic system, open holes, HI-cells, extensometers, fibre optic sensing, cave markers, closure monitoring, underground observations and damage mapping were used to characterise the performance and position of the cave back. The data and observations collected were compared to predictions from numerical and empirical methods and used to calibrate the numerical models for forward prediction and to develop site empirical design tools. A slag-metal equilibrium study of the system SnO-FeO-(Si02+Al2O3)/Sn-Fe was carried out at 1250°C. The distribution coefficient, k =(Sn/Fe)metal X (Fe/Sn)slag was found to range from 246 for an iron contentof 0·53 per cenrt in the metal to 82 for an iron content of 6·4 per cent. The value of the ratio ?SnO/?FeO was calculated and found to be approximately a function of per cent SnO in slag alone in the region (Si02+Al2O3)/ FeO = 0·4 to 1·2. Comparison with other published work suggests that the addition of CaO to slags having (SiO2+Al203)/FeO ratios of about 1·1 raises the value of ?SnO/?FeO...

The maximum current density at which conventional copper electrowinning plants will result in satisfactory, adherent, and dendrite·free cathodes is determined by the thickness of the diffusion boundary layer. A decrease in the value of that thickness will permit an increase in the current density. This fact is utilized to develop a high current density cell in which the reduction of the boundary layer thickness is accomplished by means of a specially designed electrolyte circulation system. The high current density cell is used to determine the effect of current density on such process parameters as current efficiency, cell voltage, power consumption, and cathode purity. A number of empirical equations are developed for the purpose of estimating the magnitude of these effects.

ALTHOUGH the development of the various flotation processes during the last 8 years has been so revolutionary, this development has been, until recently, entirely confined to the separation of the gangue from the mixed metalliferous sulphides.The desirability of finding some method of separating the independent sulphides from such a miXture, by means of flotation, has long been recognized. ThIS need was emphasized when the slimes resulting from the grinding of Broken Hill sulphide ores were for the first time successfully dealt with by the Mineral Separation Company's process on the Central mine. This process proved the practicability of separating the sulphides of lead and zinc as a mixed concentrate from the gangue present in slime. Although this was a very notable achievement, the process has not been generally used, owing to the mixed lead and zinc concentrates resulting from the treatment being acceptable neither to the zinc nor the lead smelters.Although the introduction of eucalyptus oil in minute quantities as an emulsifying agent has simplified the work of the subsequent tabling of mixed sulphide concentrates, rendering unnecessary the burning off or removal of the oil, there will always be a considerable quantity of slimy product too fine to settle on the moving surface of the concentrating machines, and therefore requiring other means for its division into lead and zinc concentrates.

In 2005, Solid Energy New Zealand Limited obtained non-notified consent for the disposal of 1Mt of coal ash at the Rotowaro minesite, forming part of a coal supply agreement with the Huntly Power Station. The consenting of major mine site activities has historically required wide consultation and involves notification of the application.   The risk and cost associated with consultation can be significantly reduced via a non-notified process. A non-notified consenting process necessitates environmental effects to be shown to be æless than minorÆ, which requires the combination of robust science and a pragmatic approach to design, assessment of environmental effects, and consenting issues.   Key issues examined included consideration of how to practically operate a significant disposal project within the confines of an operating mine, minimising the costs, civil and geotechnical design and practical issues associated with traditional disposal. Environmental issues specifically related to the coal ash, led to a site specific performance driven approach to management rather than relying on conventional prescriptive approaches. Environmental issues of concern include the leaching of boron and aluminium from ash into groundwater and mine water management systems where both boron and aluminium can occur at elevated levels.   Coal ash exhibits unusual geochemical characteristics reflecting the primary coal composition and the combustion process. The dominant coal type combusted at the Huntly Power Station is derived from Rotowaro and the resulting ash is cementitious and has a high alkalinity. As a result the disposal design is based on the characteristics of the ash itself rather than the material into, or onto which the ash is disposed. Non-notified status was able to be achieved through consideration of these key characteristics of the ash, ensuring that the dimensions of the disposal site and each location was designed to minimise the flow of groundwater through the ash and demonstrating that the physical ash disposal effects are less than minor compared to the consented mining operation.

Author's Note: Since the paper on "All-Flotation at North Broken Hill Limited" was read and discussed, the metallurgical results obtained have conclusively justified the adoption of the All-Flotation treatment.At present the shipping grades of lead concentrate produced from North mine ore range between 74% and 75% Pb, carrying approximately 43 oz. Ag and 4.5%-5% Zn. The lead recovery in lead concentrate is recording 95%-96% of the lead content of crude ore, and the milling and treatment cost on 6400 tons crude ore perweek of 96 hours has dropped to 6s. 3.6d. per ton on ore. With an increased ore tonnage, and with a new mill, considerable further reduction in costs is certain.New flotation machines, with 30 in. vertical depth of overflow (instead of 42 in. depth), are now being tried for the secondary granular treatment, with advantageous results. The treatment to-day is practically the same as that outlined in the paper, excepting that additional concentrate is returned for retreatment in the existing units.(Signed) A. LOWRY.Mr. T. A. Arrium’s magnetite concentrator has recently completed a modification program to improve the process that has been in operation in Whyalla, South Australia for the previous seven years. The magnetite concentrate is pumped via pipeline to the coast and serves as pellet plant feed, eventually being turned into steel in the Whyalla blast furnace. With the addition of a new 3MW IsaMill at the concentrator, the plant has seen increased production from a reduced feed grade, enabling Arrium to treat ores previously stockpiled as waste. This paper will focus on the design work and commissioning of the fine grinding circuit along with the year of optimisation that followed, taking the IsaMill up to 350+ tph of throughput.CITATION:Larson, M, Anderson, G, Mativenga, M and Stanton, C, 2015. When the Mining Bill came before the Victorian Legislature not so many months ago, the question arose whether mining managers required education, and to what extent. Some members of the House expressed themselves in a way which appeared to leave the impression that mining managers would be all the better if they were not brought up in a scientific school.To try and prove what we owe to science I will give a short history of colonial mining from the earlier period to the present time and compare results.I believe I am right in saying that South Australia is the pioneer colony in mining and to her belongs the credit of not dnly being the first mining colony, but also that her beginning turned out so successful, as the history of the Burra Burra copper mine will testify. At about the same time a little galena mining was carried on nearer to Adelaide, but as this did not prove a success and was only worked by tributing parties, little notice was taken of it.

When an aqueous suspension of pyrite and a manganese ore reacts with oxygen, manganese is dissolved by the ferrous sulphate and sulphuric acid produced in situ by oxidation of pyrite. In the absence of added acid, the optimum conditions are: a molecularratio of Mn02/FeS2 of about 1·0, a temperature of about 1400 C., and an oxygen pressure between 25 and 90 lb./sq. in. Under these conditions, complete extraction of manganese is obtained in six hours leaching. An addition of sulphuric acid enables an Mn02/FeS2 ratio of 2·0 to be used successfully.Manganous sulphate decreases in solubility with increase in temperature above 1000 C., but even when the solubility limit is reached during leaching, reaction to form MnS04 still proceeds, and on cooling the MnS04 redissolves.INTRODUCTIONMany manganese deposits contain secondary manganese oxide minerals which are difficult to concentrate. Considerable attention has therefore been given to their hydrometallurgical treatment. In most manganese oxide minerals, the manganese is quadrivalent and must be reduced to the divalent state for dissolution. Reduction and dissolution can be accomplished in a number of ways, one method being to use aqueous ferrous sulphate solutions.A possible source of ferrous sulphate is pyrite as it is known that ferrous ion is an intermediate product in the aqueous oxidation of pyrite. It was therefore thought possible, that by heating an aqueous suspension of manganese oxide and pyrite with oxygen, the ferrous sulphate and sulphuric acid formed from pyrite would provide the necessary leaching reagents for manganese in situ. There are many technologies available today in terms of fire and life safety in road tunnels. So many in fact that it is becoming more and more difficult for clients and contractors alike to determine what they want and what they need. From a clientÆs perspective, fire and life safety is about protection to its infrastructure and to the public at large. Conversely, the contractor is looking to meet its æfit for purposeÆ or ædeem to complyÆ requirements in the most economic and practicable way. Practices regarding fire and life safety in road tunnels have undergone a degree of transformation during the last decade or more throughout the world. This transformation has largely been driven by a series of catastrophic accidents such as the major fires in Europe including the Mont Blanc Tunnel, Tauern Tunnel, Saint-Gothard Tunnel, and now most recently in the CityLink Tunnels in Melbourne. International guidelines produced by organisations such as the Permanent International Association of Road Congresses (PIARC), the European Union, the International Tunnelling Association (ITA) and the US National Fire Protection Authority (NFPA) now provide clients, owners and designers with the tools required to define and specify the required fire and life safety systems in road tunnels. The majority of these tools are based on risk assessment and risk management. Recent road tunnel projects within Australia, however, have not referred solely to such guidelines. Clients have opted to prescribe different or additional fire and life safety requirements within the projectÆs technical specification documentation (project requirements), leaving designers and contractors with little room to implement alternatives or substitutions. Further, these project requirements are largely dictated by practice established on previous road tunnel projects within Australia. This paper looks at the current international guidelines and practices and undertakes a comparison with the EastLink tunnels in Melbourne and other road tunnels within Australia and makes assessment on whether Australian methods are the most appropriate for clients and contractors alike. Focus is directed to the key elements of fire and life safety such as:traffic envelope, barrier arrangements and emergency walkway provisions;deluge systems;drainage systems;fire rating requirements;tunnel ventilation systems;cross passage provisions;fire safety assessment;critical intelligence systems including help phones, CCTV, incident detection, tunnel signage, etc; andexternal tunnel control systems.

During the extensive research which has been conducted in the Metallurgy Department of the University of Melbourne, into the properties of lead and its dilute alloys, the Brinell test has been used for the determination of hardness.The work described herein represents part of an investigation into the influence of various factors on such determinations, particularly when carried out on different qualities of "pure" lead. It is intended to publish the more theoretical and controversial aspects of this research elsewhere.MATERIALS USED AND THEIR PREPARATION FOR TESTINGThe tests to be reported have been conducted on a specially pure electrolytic lead, and several brands of commercially "pure" lead. The analyses of the samples upon which most of the work has been carried out are given in Table 1.Note: Oxygen was not determined, but from the work of H. W. Worner, in the Rosenhain Memorial Laboratory, it appears probable that it was approximately 0-0003% in all samples.
