The purpose of this paper is to present a detailed account of the development of the Blasthole Diamond Drilling method of stoping now used at the property of Big Bell Mines Limited, in Western Australia.The ore body is one of the large low grade gold deposits of this State, being a continuous lens 1,850 ft. long and ranging in width from 15 ft. at the ends to 120 ft. at the widest part, the average width being 59 ft. It was first worked in 1913 by a local syndicate, and up to 1924, when operations ceased, 64,448 tons of 3.4 dwt. ore were mined from a shallow open cut. Between 1928 and 1932, 15 deep diamond drill holes were put down to test the ore body at vertical depths ranging from 100 to 700 ft. On the information gained from these drill holes, Premier Gold Mining Co. Ltd. began underground explQration. A level was driven at a depth of 253 ft. and crosscuts put out to the full width of the, orebody at intervals of 100 ft. along the strike, all ore broken being put through a sampling plant. On completion of this sampling,' Big Bell Mines Limited was formed as the operating company, and a plant with a capacity of 1,000 long tons per day was erected and mining and milling operations were commenced in 1937. In order to meet the increasing demand for coal for their Newcastle Steel Works, the Broken Hill Pty. Co. Ltd., on June 5, 1937, approved of a scheme to sink a tunnel to the Victoria Seam at their Burwood Colliery. This seam was virgin at this locality and lay nominally horizontal at a depth of 320ft. vertical from the surface.For the purpose of despatch of the coal produced it was decided that the tunnel be equipped with a rubber belt conveyor system.This was a comparatively new departure in Australia, and, indeed, was one of the first installations of its kind in the world, designed to raise coal from considerable depth by this means. Later the tunnel was extended to the Borehole Seam, which lay nominally horizontal at a vertical depth of 600ft. from the surface. The Rio Capim kaolin district, located in the north-east of Parß State, Brazil, constitutes one of the worldÆs largest high-whiteness kaolin reserves for the paper coating industry. It contains, at the base of the main ore, a soft kaolin that gradually changes at the top into a ferruginous duricrust followed by a flint kaolin. The flint kaolin is completely discarded during the exploitation of the soft kaolin. With the view of a more complete beneficiation, aiming at a sustainable development of the minerals industry, the use of this residual flint kaolin has been considered for the manufacturing of zeolites. Zeolites were synthesised from the flint kaolin through a reaction between metakaolinite with soda at 80¦C, for durations of 24 to 144 hours. The transformation into metakaolinite was carried out at 800¦C and was not affected by the titanium oxides. For a synthesis time of only 24 hours, a zeolite 4A very close to its theoretical definition was obtained, whereas for synthesis times longer than 96 hours, a slight formation of hydro-sodalite was also observed. The synthesised zeolites were tested as cationic adsorbents on 0.5 molar solutions of Cu, Pb, Cd and Zn. The adsorption was measured for contact durations of one and three days. It was noted that the exchange kinetics were slow and that the retention was significantly greater after three days than after one day. The retention was greater than 50 per cent of the theoretical exchange capacity for Pb, Cd and Zn, which was different to Cu, where the retention exceeded its theoretical exchange capacity.

Models of the genesis of existing ore oodles and targetting of exploration for new mines are greatly enhanced by an-understanding of the plate tectonic environment existing at the time of mineral emplacement. In areas of recent or active tectonism, a study of the present-day crustal and upper mantle structure is an obvious starting point in unravelling the evolution of the accessible upper crust. Bougainville is the northern-most island in the Solomon Islands arc. A 7km deep trench almost 100km off its western coast marks the commencement of subduction of the Solomon Sea plate beneath the Pacific plate. As outlined by the seismicity, the subducted crustal slab under the southern half of Bougainville reaches the axis of the island at about 100km depth, from which point it dips near vertically another 300km into the upper mantle. Large surface blasts at the Bougainville Copper Mine at Panguna, Bougainville, Papua New Guinea were used to derive an unreversed upper crustal profile of the island. The crust appears to be relatively simple, being comprised of a 5km deep layer with a P-wave velocity of 4.5km/sec, overlying a l0km thick layer with a P-wave velocity of 7.2km/sec. Constraints on the 15km mantle depth were provided by the identification of both P to and S to P phase conversions of seismic waves from local shallow earthquakes at the Moho boundary. An upper mantle velocity of 7.95(¦ 0.15) km/sec was measured from travel times of selected shallow earthquakes along the strike of the island arc.

The amount of copper production by flash smelting process occupies about 17% (equivalent to 1.4 million t/year) of total free world production. In Japan, 650,000 tons of copper is produced annually by flash smelting. This is 65% of the gross copper production of Japan. To reinforce pollution control, promote energy saving, and enhance production efficiency by increasing the size of furnaces, conventional blast furnaces and reverberatory furnaces are being replaced with the flash smelters worldwide. The Ashio Smelter started copper production in 1884 and developed in association with the Ashio mine. In those days, the Ashio smelter produced copper by using the blast furnace process designed for the high-grade ore from the copper mine. At that time, this process was specialized in Japan. In 1956, for the first time in Japan, the Ashio Smelter introduced the flash smelting process developed by Outokumpu Oy of Finland (it is suitable for treating the copper concentrate, producing sulfuric acid and improving production efficiency). The flash furnace in Ashio, the first ever in Japan, had a capacity of 230 t/day for copper concentrate and was operated up to 1962. During this period, various operational troubles were solved, and further improvements were made; and, in 1962, a Furukawa-type flash smelting furnace was completed in Ashio. This improved version of a flash furnace had a capacity of 450 t/day. There was one flash furnace and one waste heat boiler, which were arranged in a unique pattern for that time. This furnace may be said to be the prototype of the present flash smelting process in the world.

The power station went into operation in 1931, when the installed capacity was 12,500 kVA. with a loading of 4,000 kVA. In 1936 the loading increased to 6,750 kVA. which necessitated the addition of a third set which went into operation in 1937, the installed capacity at that date being 18,750 kvA. with a loading of 7,000 kVA. This remained fairly constant until 1945, when a gradual increase was noticed, the loading in 1952 being 10,598 kVA.With the addition of the copper plant, additional generating capacity was required and it was decided to raise the installed capacity by the addition of a fourth set to 34,375 kVA. with an expected loading, when producing copper, of 20,000 kViA.MAIN POWER PLANTThis consists of three GiE.e. alternators of 6,250 kVA. or 5,000 kW. at 0.8 P.F. rating and one G.E.C. alternator of 15,625 kVA. or 12,500 kW. at 0.8 P.F. rating, making a total generating capacity of 34,375 kVA.Each alternator is driven by Fraser and Chalmers turbines at 3,000 r.p.m.SYSTEMThe main 3 phase 3 wire 3,300 volt distribution system has the neutral point of alternators earthed through by one or two earthing resistors designed to limit earth fault current to 3,000 amp. for 20 seconds, in the case of the large machine, and to 1,100 amp. for 10 seconds, in the case of the smaller machines, or full load of either size machine at rated voltage.

An Investigation on the Effect of Chrysotile Particle Shape and Anisotropic Properites on the Rheology of Chrysotile Suspensions Chrysotile, a polymorph of serpentine, is a phyllosilicate mineral that occurs as a major gangue mineral in many ores (eg Mt Keith nickel sulfide ore, Western Australia). The rheological behaviour of chrysotile stems from two main factors: its distinctive morphology and its electrical surface charge. It is believed that these factors are central to the problematic rheological behaviour and low solids throughput typically experienced in the processing of such ores. In this work, a study of the effects of chrysotile surface charge properties and particle shape on the rheology of chrysotile suspensions was conducted. It was found that the rheology of suspensions of pure chrysotile is characterised by extremely high yield stress values over a broad pH range (pH 4 to 11).The disparity in the point of zero charge and range of maximum yield stress for chrysotile is consistent with the anisotropic nature of chrysotile particles. A comparison of the rheological behaviour of quartz suspensions (non-fibrous) to that of chrysotile suspensions (fibrous) provides a practical indication of the effects of the fibrous nature of chrysotile relative to non-fibrous minerals. The long, thin fibres are easily entangled to form suspensions with much higher plastic viscosities and Bingham yield stresses than non-fibrous particles. Chrysotile particle shape and surface charge are central to the rheology of chrysotile suspensions, although shape appears to play a more significant role in this regard. This fundamental study would be beneficial to the ongoing research for improved recovery in the Mt Keith nickel sulfide ore as well as other chrysotile bearing ores.

The resource estimation process for the underground Mount Isa Copper Mine has undergone significant change. Block models are now created using a commercial software package as opposed to the in-house software that was previously used. With mineralisation occurring over a strike length of more than 4 km, Mineral Resources for all categories totalled 190 Mt at 2.7 per cent Cu at 31 December 2002. Estimation is by ordinary kriging with two separate models generated to cover the X41 and Enterprise orebodies respectively. The underlying Upper Basement Contact and the silica-dolomite alteration envelope are both used as hard boundaries to constrain the modelling. From a validated block model, grade shells are generated at the appropriate cut-off grade for a given area. The grade shells are depleted for mined voids and subdivided into 30 metre strike length blocks. Application of a SMU criteria and crown and pillar constraints results in failed blocks being culled from the resource inventory. Mineral Resource blocks are further subdivided into resource categories (Measured, Indicated, Inferred) by the Competent Person on the basis of geological confidence, taking account of geological and grade continuity, drillhole spacing and structural complexity (JORC, 1999). A geostatistical æconfidenceÆ category is incorporated into the block model as an additional tool for the categorisation process. The shapes are assessed in concert with a mining engineer to determine whether a reasonable expectation of mining potential exists and if not they are removed from the resource. The final categorised blocks constitute the Mineral Resource inventory and form the basis for conversion to Ore Reserves. The resultant Mineral Resources and Ore Reserves are reported on an æinclusive ofÆ basis.

his report is going to point to that the effect of the mining dewatering on the area of Transdanubian Mountain Range has reached a phase when the cost of dewatering and providing damages can seriously jeopardize a profitable mining operation. Up to 60s the interest of mining had been dominant only, but since the begining of 80s the conceptions of industrial development and the value of enviroment protection have been changed. The natural karstwater balance of the TMR can be presented (Figure Land 2.) and the present situation of it points to that the descharge has exceeded the reacharge in 50 %. During the past 10 years the decreasing of the stored karstic water resourches was 1.1 km . The decreasing of the spring yields reached 80-82 % of the natural ones. (Figure 3-4.). Conservation of the present discharge may lead up to the totaly drain of the karstwater regime. A computer aid control system had been to develop by the bauxite mining and using of it the yield of dewatering decreased and a moderate rising of the water table has started since 1986. A recunstruction was made at the biggest thermal-medicinal lake its springs have had their source in 40 meter depth inside a spring cave at the bottom of the lake. Earlier the spring yield decreased due to the dewatering activity of mines. As a result of using of the CAC system and the providing works at the thermal sprino,the karstwater balance has got in the state of equilibrum, the first cost was decreased and spring yield was increased and the enviromental limits were adverted from the way of mining.

Evidence for Middle-Late Triassic large-scale, silicic volcanism characteristic of extensional continental terranes is widespread in the Tasman Orogenic Zone in Eastern Australia. Detailed study of an area of south-east Queensland has defined the eroded remnants of a large collapse caldera and an associated area of rhyolite dome building and regional downsag which may be a second caldera (Stephens, 1986). The silicic volcanics and minor basaltic to andesitic products have been assigned to the Aranbanga Volcanic Group (Cranfield, in prep.) and the associated granite complex has been named the Mungore Complex (Ellis, 1968). Published isotopic age dates on the Mungore Complex are 212-219 m.y. (K-Ar Biotite; Ellis, 1968) and 226 m.y. (pooled Rb-Sr on several similar plutons in the region; Webb and McDougall, 1967). Basalts within the area have been dated at 219 m.y. (GSQ Annual Rpt., 1986). The collapse caldera (Mungore Caldera) lies on the intersection of 4 major structural features: 1) the Mt. Perry Lineament, a meridional fault zone extending for over 600 kilometres in a NNW-SSE direction and which has faulted the eastern part of the caldera 5 kilometres sinistrally. The lineament has been active at least from mid-Permian to Late Triassic and has localised activity into the Tertiary. Granite plutons of the same age as'the Mungore Complex- are topographically prominent and largely concentrated east of the Mt. Perry Lineament and its extensions (Nash, 1986); 2) the extension of the Darling River Lineament, a continental-scale, ENE trending feature which correlates with regional structural discontinuities but which lacks expression as faults within the Tasman Orogenic Zone;

Determining the mechanical properties of rocks is important for various civil engineering fields, including the mining of raw materials for aggregates used in the construction and paving industries. Traditionally, the mechanical properties of rocks are obtained through in situ and laboratory tests during geotechnical surveys. However, these time-consuming surveys involve many resources. In contrast, hyperspectral remote sensing methods make it possible to identify the mineralogical composition and crystallographic structure of the rock; properties that control the mechanical properties of the rocks. In this work, we characterise the mechanical properties of carbonate rocks by using a hyperspectral sensor in laboratory conditions. We collected about 150 cylindrical samples of carbonate rock, with a wide range of strength values from several rock outcrops in Israel. We used a point spectrometer in the range of 0.4–2.5 μm and a spectral image sensor in the range of 3.0–12.0 μm, scanning the samples to obtain the signature of their light reflections and spectral emissivity. We then measured the samples’ density, porosity, water absorption, and uniaxial compressive strength (UCS). We used sophisticated data mining to find statistical relationships between the hyperspectral signatures of the samples and their mechanical properties. We used this data to identify the most dominant wavelengths for predicting mechanical properties. We found that the density, porosity, and water absorption of carbonate rocks could be confidently predicted based on spectroscopy data, while the UCS of the rock could also be predicted, but less significantly. The results of the study pave the way for the development of measuring tools for the mechanical properties of rock, based on non-destructive tests of quarrying materials.

The biggest hard rock double-shield tunnel boring machine (TBM) in the world, with a diameter of 12.4 m, is currently excavating the North-South Bypass, which includes a crossing under the Brisbane River, Brisbane, Australia, to relieve the often congested road traffic in the city centre. Ten years ago a 10.7 m Mixshield giant helped to handle the Olympic Games in Sydney linking the airport with the city centre for an improved transportation of fascinated visitors. In Shanghai, currently the biggest TBM in the world with 15.43 m diameter presents excellent performance rates; and in Paris a convertible Mixshield could be quickly changed from earth pressure balanced (EPB) to slurry type in order to handle the very heterogeneous ground conditions. In Madrid a 15.2 m EPB giant finished its tunnel job four months ahead of schedule. Large-scale TBMs have proved their economic and innovative potential to create the current and future underground architecture of mega-cities. TBM technology has made further large innovative steps in the last decade. State-of-the-art is a TBM for very heterogeneous ground conditions comprising hard and soft rock with additional high groundwater pressure. The machine concept is adapted to the various ground conditions and allows for a quick and flexible application. Ground treatment by means of additives developed to a helpful tool in this connection. To meet the special challenges of urban tunnel projects of nowadays it is of very high importance, beside applying highest developed technology of TBM, to have a comprehensive technical support during the project phase and to develop positive relationships between all participants of the project which last longer than only for one project.

Naturally occurring rutile contains approximately 96 per cent titanium dioxide (Ti02), whereas the product from the ilmenite reduction - aeration upgrading process, "sub- rutile", contains only about 92 per cent Ti02. Therefore, there is an-incentive to lift the quality of sub-rutile by removing transition metal impurities, in order to supply a more valuable and marketable product, particularly for the chloride-route pigment producers. Previous studies have shown that the sub- rutile residual iron content (of approximately 4 per cent) and residual manganese content (of approximately 1.5 per cent) are chemically bound within the titanium-oxygen mineral lattice, and are most difficult to remove by simple leaching methods. In attempts to improve their eventual removal, a simple process modification has been successfully investigated in laboratory scale trials. Transition metal sulphides have been formed in the reduced ilmenite by using a "sulphur-doping" technique during reduction (metallization) conducted at controlled temperatures. These compounds give rise to greatly enhanced dissolution of the unwanted transition metal constituents during the sub- sequent aeration and acid washing steps. Thus, the manganese content of the final sulphur- doped, reduced-aerated, acid washed product can be reduced by about 90 per cent to 0.2 per cent, and the iron content by about 70 per cent to less than 1.5 per cent, in comparison with those levels remaining after unmodified pro- cessing. Additions of sulphur as low as 2 per cent of the weight of the ilmenite have proven satisfactory. Preliminary studies reveal that the modified process is economically feasible. These results suggest that the sulphur content of the Collie coal char used in an unmodified reduction step must exert some influence on the eventual removal of iron and manganese during aeration and acid washing.

The problems associated with equating calculated and measured properties of explosives with blast results are examined. The results from six full-scale test blasts in a limestone quarry are described. The purpose of the full-scale trial was two-fold, i) assess the role of varying aluminum levels (10% maximum) in a given explosive in terms of blasting performance, and, ii) find correlation between calculated, as well as measured properties of explosives and the resulting blasting performance. Each blast consisted of 36 holes, initiated with short period detonators in a staggered 3-row 2.4 m x 2.7 m (burden x spacing) pattern. Each 75 mm diameter borehole with no subgrade contained on the average 22 kg of 65 mm diameter cartridged explosive. The bench height was 6.3 m, with an average collpr of 1.2 m. The calculated and mgasured properties of explosive included, strength, detonation and explosion pressure, VOD, plate-dent depth, underwater bubble and shock energy, and the total energy efficiency. Each blast was instrumented to measure detonation velocity, initiation sequence, muck pile motion by means of high-speed photography and blasting vibrations. The post-blast measurements included photogrammetric survey of muck pile for size distribution on surface, muck pile profile, as well as the extent of backbreak. The results showed that the overall blasting performance of the explosive in question was nearly commensurate with the level of aluminum in the explosive, and there was excellent correlation between the underwater test properties and the blast results. The study also exemplified the need for more extensive post-blast analysis than is usual practice, for quantitative assessment of blasting performance of explosives and providing the necessary data-base for calibration of blasting models.

Shaft guide reaetions in No. 2 Ore Shaft, Mount Isa Mines Limited, have been reduced to a low order of magnitude by the use of self aligning slippers and spring loaded guide rollers. Before commissioning the new 4500 h.p. winder at No. 2 Ore Shaft in January, 1958, it was realised that the increase in hoisting speed from 1800 to 2650 ft/min. would cause high shaft guide reactions which would be increased further when the elongated 12 ton skips replaced the existing 7 ton skips.The Cambridge accelerometer was used to measure the shaft guide reactions and to confirm that progressive skip modifications were resulting in reduced reactions. The skip modifications were completed in 4 weeks.INTRODUCTIONIn 1956 an expansion programme was initiated to increase production from 5000 to 11000 tons per mining day. At No. 2 Ore Shaft the 1500 h.p. winder operated at 1800 ft./min. and hoisted a 7 ton capacity skip. The new 4500 h.p. winder operates at 2650 ft./min. and hoists a 12 ton capacity skip. No. 2 Ore shaft is equipped with two 5 ft. by 5 ft. hoisting compartments (Fig. 1) and any increase in skip capacity meant an abnormally long skip. This feature, coupled with the increase in hoisting speed, could have caused very high shaft guide reactions. Before commissioning the 4500 h.p. winder, a Cambridge accelerometer was borrowed from the University of Adelaide and was used to measure the shaft guide reactions. Rather than carry out an extensive shaft timbering programme, the skips were modified by fitting cushioned guide shoes and spring loaded guide rollers (Fig. 1). Testing commenced in February, 1958, and was completed in March, 1958.

To provide suitable backfill material for the cut and fill mining method being used to extract ore from the C.S.A. mine, flotation tailings are deslimed in single stage cyclones. The sand fraction is stored on the surface in unagitated storage bins before being pumped underground, while the slime portion is thickened and pumped to a residue dam. Design and operating details of the sand preparation and storage sections are given.The initial preparation of a stope for filling, consists of laying percolation and decantation drainage pipes on the sill floor. Preparation for fllling of subsequent lifts consists of rearing up the ventilation pipes at the ends of the stope, preparing the decantation system, and building a barricade or wall. The fill is carried to, and discharged into, the stope through 4 in. diameter pipes and filling of any section is carried out 24 hr/day normally without supervision. The fill is retieulated underground to the 1200 ft level through rubber lined pipe installed in the upcast shaft. Boreholes of 3 in. diameter drilled from the1200 ft level convey fill to the 1800 ft level. The mine drainage system is basically designed to handle the water associated with hydraulic filling. A system of primary and secondary sumps has been installed to handle the percolation and decantation drainage from stapes and to allow settling of fines before the water is fed to the main pump station.A programme of investigation into the properties of the emplaced fill is in progress. Results to date indicate that the fill as presently placed and drained, will not cause any problems in the mining of vertical orebodies by cut and fill methods for lifts in excess of 300 ft.

The gold province of Otago occupies an area of upwarped basement, the Otago Schist, comprising predominantly quartzofeldspathic and volcanogenic metasediments. This assemblage is the product of collisional tectonic deformation and associated metamorphism, mainly to lower greenschist facies, during the Rangitata Orogeny (200-100 Ma). Historically this region has produced 240 tonnes of gold, 4% (10 t.) of which was from the mining of Cretaceous gold- quartz mineralised vein systems. Auriferous vein systems in the Otago Schist are mainly hosted within NW trending normal fault-fracture arrays, however NW trending reverse fault-hosted vein systems also occur. We propose that the Late Cretaceous-mid Tertiary Otago Schist structure represents a regional anticlinorium containing flexural folds of at least two wavelengths. The anticlinorium structure has been quantified by determining variations in angular discordance between schistosity and the Otago Peneplain, a Late Cretaceous-mid Tertiary erosion surface covering most of the Otago district. A structural model for the evolution of the post-collisional anticlinorium requires the cooling surficial zone (carapace) of a retrograding metamorphic belt to behave as an elastic lid. Erosion of topographic load on the carapace drove isostatic uplift, which was greatest in the tectonically thickened core of the orogen. In this way differential uplift produced flexural deformation in the elastic carapace, expressed as a large scale arching of the orogenic belt. Flexure created tangential longitudinal strains in the outer-arc, leading to extension and the formation of mineralised normal faults. These structures are separated by a neutral surface from shortening and associated mineralised reverse faults in the inner-arc. Our structural model predicts that the distribution of auriferous lodes should be localised about zones of maximum flexural curvature, where the tangential longitudinal strains are highest. As a result, NW-SE hinge regions separating schistosity dip domains in the Otago gold province may have new found significance as potential exploration targets.

The Comstock Lode, a world-class precious metal vein district near Virginia City in western Nevada, U.S.A. (Fig. 1), produced 8.3 million ounces (0.28 X 106 kg) of gold and 193 million ounces (6.56 X 106 kg) of silver during the period 1859 to present (Bonham and Papke, 1969). More than 95% of production was from the Comstock fault, while the adjacent Silver City, Occidental and Flowery vein systems produced about $10 million (U.S.). Within the Comstock fault high-grade ore bodies, or bonanzas, were distributed over 2.3 miles (3.8 km) along strike and persisted to >3000 feet (>900 m) below the surface (Fig. 2). Bonanzas consisted of as much as 1.4 million tons (1.3 million tonnes) of ore grading up to 1.9 oz./ton (65 gm/ton) Au and 30 oz./ton (1020 gm/ton) Ag (Table 1). Some bonanzas occurred in the main Comstock fault plane while others, including the highest grade bonanzas, formed in hangingwall frac- tures. After 1880 most ore consisted of lower-grade vein material surrounding mined- out bonanzas and large volumes of mineralized vein and wall rock in the Comstock hanging- wall that were mined from open cuts. Deep mining was hindered by large quantities of hot water and bad ground which ultimately defined the limits of underground production. The widths and richness of Comstock bonanzas strongly influenced U.S. mining law, milling and underground mining methods, and securi- ties regulations that are in practice today. Within the district Mesozoic metasedimentary rocks, metavolcanic rocks, and granitic in- trusions are overlain by Miocene volcanic rocks (Thompson and White, 1964). Veins cut all lithologies. Massive sulphide ZnPbCuAg deposits in the Halls Peak district of northeastern NSW are of the submarine volcanogenic type. They occur as a number of small lenses enclosed in shale and epiclastic rocks, in association with felsic volcanics of early Permian age. The deposits crop out in steep terrain near the eastern edge of the New England plateau. Local relief of 700 m and slopes up to 50¦, coupled with an average annual rainfall of about 1000 mm has led to local severe landsliding in previously mined areas. Mining from the 1890's to the 1960's has also resulted in unconstrained drainage of heavy metal-bearing acid waters and physical dispersion of finer grained metalliferous sediments into the Chandler River. Waters emanating from the main landslide area, from underground workings and draining scattered unconfined stockpiles of massive sulphide ore have pH values of 3 to 4 and contain elevated contents of Zn, Cu, Pb, Cd and Fe. Chemical mobility of heavy metals into streams occurs under low pH conditions with Zn exhibiting the greatest dispersion. Increasing pH conditions downstream cause precipitation of Fe phases and coprecipitation of heavy metals. Physical dispersion of secondary metal-bearing minerals into the surrounding creeks results in wt% levels of Cu, Pb and Zn in the stream sediments thereby exceeding the regional background values by one to three orders of magnitude. Areas disturbed by mining are characterised by lack of vegetation, biomagnification of heavy metals into algae and lower plants, and partial recolonisation by metal-tolerant grass species (Snow Grass, Poa sieberana; Blady Grass, Lomandra longifolia). Rehabilitation measures will have to include landslide stabilisation, impervious sealing or removal of sulphidic materials, import of topsoil and revegetation by metal-tolerant, slow-growing native grass and shrub species.
