Preconcentration greatly reduces the ore mass input to the processing plant while upgrading the grade. One of the commonly used methods of preconcentration is optical sorting. These methods rely on optical sensors which classify the material stream into “accept-reject” streams. Currently, it is common to use near infrared (NIR) or colour cameras to classify streams based on reflectance or colour thresholds set by experts. The imaging is done through line-scan sensors where the material is scanned on a belt or a chute. Then, a separation apparatus like a diverter gate or air jet is controlled to separate the streams according to the classification made by the algorithm. Separation efficiency is dependent on the classification algorithm. Existing classification algorithms rely on low-level feature discrimination like observing individual pixel values for reflectance or colour hues. This limits discrimination between minerals with low contrast in colour. Human experts perform mineral segmentation using texture, colour distribution and shape, but it is difficult to translate these visual rules to mathematical thresholds. Deep learning methods like Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) provide high-level feature discrimination similar to a human expert. Instead of relying on pre-defined features, the CNNs learn complex features from the dataset. CNNs can construct a hierarchy of features based on pixel clusters to learn texture, shapes, and colour spectrums of the mineral grain surface to provide better separation. In this study, a state-of-the-art deep learning instance segmentation method is used to outline boundaries and classify grains from the background (mineral segmentation). The algorithm is trained on images collected from a flotation feed of a gold deposit, where the gold is mechanically locked inside pyrite. This method can process on-line video inputs at 5 frames per second to provide a live grade. The proposed method is inexpensive as it only uses a camera and a desktop computer.

Remnant rib pillars at Castlemaine Goldfields Ltd’s Ballarat Gold Project have been sterilised by the placement of loose rock fill in production stopes. The application of selectively injecting low-viscosity grout into the backfilled stopes to form a stabilised material has enabled recovery of the previously sterilised pillars. This paper outlines the engineering design, quality control and quality assurance program implemented to ensure the safe and efficient recovery of the rib pillars. Concern for the environment by the public and by mining companies, has led to many recent attempts to revegetate areas disturbed by mining activities. The problem of successfully revegetating disturbed areas and mine wastes is often difficult, even under favourable conditions. Under the severe conditions that prevail in and and semi-arid parts of Australia, such difficulties may be extreme. An approach is described in which field trials are used to investigate factors which adversely affect revegetation and to evaluate optimum methods and treatments..A wide range of methods suitable for use in and situations is described. These include grading and cultivating operations, topdressing with natural soil materials, selection of suitable plant species, mulching and the use of fertilisers and supplementary irrigation. It is concluded that such a programme provides the best approach to this complex and expensive problem.

Changes in mining technology have led to an increase in the number of underground sulfide dust explosions reported in Australian and overseas mines. Samples collected at the Elura mine consisting primarily of pyrite, pyrrhotite, arsenopyrite, sphalerite and galena, were tested in 8 litre explosion chamber. The dusts were found to be capable of producing dangerous dust explosions with maximum explosion pressures of 440 kPa and rates of pressure rise of 5200 kPa/s. The hazards of a sulfide dust explosion are associated with the pressure wave and flame front of the explosion and the toxic gases remaining after the explosion.

To reflect on the early history of mining in South Australia requires considerable imagination and rashness. The people who were the chief actors in the scene have long since passed away. Accounts of their activities are hazy and debatable. A broad brush account is all that I can hope to accomplish under these circumstances. It is fitting that a picture be painted and possible lessons learnt from the achievements of our pre- Decessors.

Developments in furnace construction and design have been very rapid in recent years. Larger furnaces operating at high top pressures with much improved burdens are giving extremely high production rates. Modern scientific techniques and the use of computer control are contributing to these Rates.

The incidence of colliery disasters has highlighted the need for more centralised and directed coal mining safety research in Queensland, with particular impetus from explosions at Box Flat in 1972, Kianga in 1975 and Moura No 4 in 1986. Inquiries which identified the likely causes recommended measures and, research and two outcomes have been the present Mines Safety Research Advisory Committee and The Safety in Mines Testing and Research Station at Redbank, near Brisbane, dealing with all mining problems, coal and metalliferous. Already, important research into ignition and explosion and other health and safety matters has been accomplished; the Station has become an accredited testing laboratory; and international recognition has been achieved. Now the advisory, testing and research arms are soundly in place to pursue preventive investigations and be ready to provide assistance in any emergencies.

Advanced preparation techniques open new ways for SEM and X-ray diffraction (XRD) investigations on hydrating cementitious systems. In this paper the early time hydration of Portland cement is studied with advanced cryo scanning electron microscopy techniques in combination with in situ X-ray diffraction and heat-flow calorimetry. The application of preparation techniques and analytical methods to Portland cement hydration are presented and discussed. Some aspects of hydration reactions are focused. The reaction products of the first minutes, changes in ettringite morphology, AFm formation during the deceleration period and the visualisation of C-S-H microstructures were special points of interest. X-ray diffraction analyses and Cryo-SEM images gave essential information about phase development, reaction kinetics, microstructure and morphology of hydration products. Portlandite, AFt and AFm phases were detected by in situ XRD. Cryo-SEM analyses enabled high resolution imaging and EDX-analyses of cement particles and reaction products. The results of the different analytical methods were compared to obtain detailed information about crystallisation processes and microstructural development during the first three days of Portland cement hydration.

Severe development difficulties were experienced soon after in-seam mining commenced at Appin Colliery in'1962. Thirteen years later no significant pro- gress had been made in overcoming some aspects of this development problem. Some success had been achieved in destressing roadways both in development and pillar extraction. Longwall retreat mining had shown promise of being highly productive but at an extremely high cost in terms of development requirements both in number of roadways and intensity of support in those roadways. No real advance was made in the problem of driving the first heading of a group of headings under conditions of apparently high stress in directions other than the preferred mining directions, although failure of the roof in this heading did seem to give easier work in the subsequent headings driven particularly if they were driven on narrow centres.

The Project Specification and Technical Requirements documents associated with several recent large road tunnel projects within Australia have specified the application of AS/IEC 61508 – FunctionalSafety of Electrical/Electronic/Programmable Electronic Safety Related Systems at very high performance levels for the various control and fire life safety systems associated with such facilities.This paper seeks to explore the implications of referencing this standard within the road tunnel services context in terms of practicality, complexity and cost, whilst providing some examples of how a high safety integrity level (SIL) level can theoretically be achieved given current hardware availability.

They are marked by long (500-1000 km) volcanic belts which become younger towards the Pacific up the Latest Jurassic-Neocomi- an (2) to Late Cretaceous (3) and Pale- Gene (4).

To date, few studies have been made regarding the energy requirements of the Australian mining and mineral processing industries. This paper indicates that these industries use a substantial proportion of the total Australian energy input (32.7% in 1971-72 and 36.10% in 1974-75). With the growth orientation of these industries, this input is likely to increase. Data shows that mining energy requirementE varied from 4.22% (of total Australian energy requirements) in 1971-72 to 4.16% in 1974-75. Energy requirements for the total mineral processing industries increased from 28.49% to 31.93% for the same period. The total estimated primary energy input varied from 22.56% to 25.2%, whilst indirect energy use, in the form of electricity increased from 10.16% to 10.66%; in the same period. Analysis of primary energy input data within the processing industries (1973/4) showed that the Iron and Steel Industry consumed 15.03% of the Australian total consumption, Non-Ferrous metals, 5.43%, Cement, 1.64%, and Refractories, 1.59%. It is often said in business that if you donÆt have a customer you donÆt have a business. The same rule applies to project evaluation; if you donÆt have customers you really donÆt have a viable project. It is therefore essential that in the early stages of project evaluation the following fundamental questions are addressed: What products will this project produce? Who are the potential customers? What are the customersÆ requirements with respect to grade and impurities? Do they have adequate capacity to take the production from the proposed project? Will the products introduce adverse effects in the customerÆs process circuits? Will additional waste streams requiring disposal be produced? In the past the attitude has been along the lines of the customer will take whatever we produce at the mine site. Times have now changed with customers now operating under much tighter environmental regulation with waste disposal becoming increasingly difficult. It would therefore be prudent that the principles of product stewardship be used as a tool in project evaluation. This paper will provide a general discussion on customer requirements and provide detail on case studies of the impact of mine products on smelter process circuits. It will provide examples where there were synergies between the mine product and the smelter circuit and where the mine product had adverse impacts on smelter performance.

AustraliaÆs current interest in renewable energy is based on a desire to reduce the countryÆs greenhouse gas emissions. Wood from sustainable sources offers a unique opportunity to combine greenhouse gas benefits with other significant environmental and social benefits, including salinity mitigation, carbon sequestration, soil replenishment and rural industry. The challenge is to make renewable energy from wood in a cost competitive manner, so that this broad range of benefits may be best realised. Bioenergy and carbon products are of great interest as new, commercial forestry products that can drive large-scale environmental tree planting:In Western Australia, Enecon has worked with Western Power Corporation to build the first full-scale plant for integrated processing of mallee eucalypts, to produce activated carbon, renewable power and eucalyptus oil. It is intended that this plant is the first of a number of such plants to help catalyse environmental tree planting in Western Australia. New technologies being developed overseas may provide competitive bioenergy in areas where traditional markets for wood do not exist. For example, pyrolysis converts wood into a bio-oil that may be transported to remote sites for power generation in gas turbines. Pyrolysis also produces wood char. Pyrolysis and wood-to-ethanol technologies, coupled with short rotation coppicing trees, offer the long-term prospect of large-scale production of renewable fuels around the country.

In 1992 environmental audits were carried out at seven coal mines operated by Oakbridge Limited in the Hunter Valley and Lithgow areas of NSW. The audit reports recommended a course of action designed to improve the environmental management system already in operation at the mines. This program started with training in environmental awareness for the Board of Directors, and the development and authorisation of an environmental policy. On-going programs at each mine were expanded to include environmental awareness training for all 2000 employees at the mines, and the development of a 20-module environmental training program which included air, water, soil and noise management, oil and chemical handling, sampling and monitoring, rehabilitation techniques and many more. Environmental incident reporting was introduced, and a system of reporting from the coal face through individual mine site environmental committees, to a Corporate Environmental Committee and up to the Board Environmental Committee became an effective part of a due diligence program. The Board resolved to undertake external independent environmental audits every two years, with internal reviews in the alternate years. An Environmental Management Group was formed, consisting of four internal environmental personnel and Oakbridge's appointed environmental consultant, to effectively resolve many of the environmental issues facing the Group. This program is continuing to evolve as an industry leader in environmental management Practice.

As mining progressed through the Girilambone oxide orebodies, down to the primary sulphide zones, each successive stratiform layer yielded copper bearing ores of changing mineralogy and grade. Constant changes, innovations and optimisation were required to be applied to the heap leach, solvent extraction and electrowinning operations, to efficiently produce LME Grade A quality copper cathodes from this ore. The changing ore types required various crushing, stacking and heap leach irrigation methods to ensure that optimum recovery from the predominantly low-grade copper ores was efficiently achieved. Subsequently, innovations such as heap aeration and heap rejuvenation techniques were implemented. The constant selective removal of copper from the maturing heap leach liquors, coupled with an increase in iron(III) concentration, required solvent extraction optimisation. Changes to the original solvent extraction circuit configuration, combined with changes in operating parameters and procedures, allowed effective processing with changing heap liquor compositions. The electrowinning tankhouse was also upgraded and optimised through continued testwork and monitoring, to maximise cathode production and quality

Geotechnical practice combines the site engineering geological model with engineering design and operations to control risk. The responsibility of the geotechnical professional is to present relevant engineering geological information to an engineer to effectively impact an outcome. Return is enhanced by understanding expected operating and capital cost due to ground conditions.   Risk is effectively communicated by a successful geotechnical practitioner. In a mining environment the need is to assess ground conditions accurately and quickly, and to effectively communicate expected ground response due to mining. A good engineering geological model includes a description of geotechnical engineering parameters to design assuming reasonable expected soil, rock and water conditions. Pit slopes are steepened, stope spans widened and waste foundations and land forms are constructed all under geotechnical control.   The responsibility of the geotechnical professional is to collect, assess and disseminate relative engineering geological information. The geotechnical professional is a person advising on ground related engineering, and generally operates within geology and engineering end members.   Return is better assessed on an understanding of ground cost. In operations the goal is to meet production at lower cost. In evaluation, regional and exploration geology, mine design and expected operational factors influence expected cost and project return. Return allows companies to meet shareholder expectations, attract equity to develop and add value to the community.   This paper presents a discussion with some examples to present an approach and design philosophy for geotechnical practice in the mining industry.

One of the strategies introduced within Pasminco Mining to survive low commodity prices is to formally implement a `Quality Education System'. The net result has been a consistent approach to quality within and across mine sites. This `quality system' has been adopted in the technical computing environment and the immediate benefits have been: ò A clearer understanding of the systems, processes and relationships that involve technical computing. ò A re-focussing on customer (user) requirements. ò Inclusion of managers as customers with their own requirements of performance and quality, in addition to access to Executive Information. ò New ways to measure the `performance' of a technical computing environment which includes using maintenance costs. Observations are that there is an overlap between `traditional' information technology (IT) methodologies and quality systems being put in place in the broader workplace. This overlap is most apparent in the area of analysing customer requirements. In the IT environment customers are viewed as users, and their requirements determined by undertaking a requirements analysis. A data flow diagram traditionally used in the IT environment and not as a tool in quality systems, has been used in a novel manner to help identify the customers of the technical computing department. It has also been useful in illustrating the work processes and relationships between the entities in this diagram and in directing the future initiatives needed to fulfil the customers' changing requirements.
