The Hellyer deposit, hosted in the Cambrian Mt Read Volcanics, displays features typical of volcanogenic massive sulphide orebodies. These include a well developed stringer zone, metal zonation within the orebody, a polymict volcaniclastic sequence flanking the deposit and a hangingwall alteration plume in overlying basaltic pillow laves.Mapping and core logging is very detailed in order to extract as much data as possible from the deposit and its host rocks. A geological log suitable for direct computer input was adopted shortly after the deposit's discovery.

Gold mine production in South America was 247.3 tonnes in 1995 up from 156.4 tonnes ten years earlier in 1986. This represents a 58 per cent increase and amounted to 11 per cent of total world gold mine production. The major countries involved in order of production, were: Brazil (67.4 tonnes), Peru (51.5 tonnes),. Chile (48.5 tonnes), Colombia (24.1 tonnes), Venezuela (17.1 tonnes), Bolivia (16.0 tonnes), Ecuador (9.6 tonnes), Guyana (8.8 tonnes), French Guiana (3.3 tonnes) and Argentina (one tonne). The most dramatic increase was reported in Peru where production increased from 10.9 tonnes in 1986 to 51.5 tonnes in 1995, heavily influenced by the production from Minera Yanacocha which began operations in 1993 and produced 17.2 tonnes in 1995.With the reformation of the mining laws and the introduction of investment incentives in all the South American countries in recent years, dozens of major and junior mining companies began flocking into the area in the early-1990s to conduct exploration. A recent study undertaken in Brazil shows that an average of $240 million per year will be expended in this country during the period 1993 - 2010. Twenty-five per cent of this expenditure is expected to be made on gold exploration. Similar figures for Peru are $220 million total per year with 50 per cent for gold; $170 million per year in Argentina with 25 per cent for gold and $120 million ner year in Chile also with 25 Der cent for gold.

Hydraulic fill using surface sand deposits or cycloned tailings has been used in underground mining for at least fifty years. Current technology requires a permeable fill and high cement additions for strong fill. Shortages in quantities of acceptable fill with finely ground ore may require rockfill or aggregate to be introduced as a supplement and these usually incur additional distribution costs. Alternative approaches to the problem are now being developed whereby the pulp density of the fill is raised so that it is delivered either as a dense slurry or as a paste. These regimes of fill behaviour are defined together with the plant and pumping techniques required to prepare and deliver the materials. Test techniques to define the different regimes of behaviour are identified and the variation in material properties for fills with varying pulp densities are outlined. The results indicate that high pulp density fills are stronger and have less permeability restrictions than conventional fills and that aggregate can be carried with the pulp. Thus the disadvantage of finer materials can be turned into an economic advantage. Criteria are developed for defining the type of operation suited to this Technology.

One method of forecasting prices of metals is based on analysis of historic relationships between prices, inventories and consumption. The first, but generally overlooked step in this analysis should be to remove from the inventory and consumption figures the effects of seasonal variations. The next step is to construct diagrams which show prices plotted against ratios of inventories to consumption. These diagrams indicate that, when inventories are high, prices show little response to changes in inventories. Below a critical level of inventories, however, the psychology of the market changes and small changes in inventories lead to large moves in prices. The critical level of inventories is termed the "pinch-point"; the diagram which shows prices in relation to ratios of inventories and consumption may be called a "pinch-point diagram".

Samples weighing 0·5 g are fused with potassium hydrogen sulphate, leached with 4 ml. of 4 M nitric acid and diluted to 10 ml. with water. An aliquot of the clear solution is treated with EDTA, adjusted with ammonia to give a pH value between 5 and 6 treated with cyanide, ammonia, and sodium diethyldithiocarbamate then bismuth diethyldithiocarbamate is extracted with chloroform and the yellow colour is compared visually with a standard series. Alternatively, the bismuth complex may be filtered on a "Millipore" filter and subjected to x-ray fluorescence spectrometry.

Rock Discontinuities ("joints") affect blasting results. An investigation was carried out to understand if blast parameter such as spacing needs to be altered with the change in joint direction. Small scale laboratory studies in jointed limestone blocks have been carried out. It is shown that optimum spacing is variable with the "joint" orientations. Evidence is presented from field studies in four limestone quarries supporting laboratory studies. Reasons for success and failure of widespacing technique is also provided. Only with suitable orientations of "joints: widespacing is successful.

Geostatistical simulations are the best practice for uncertainty quantification in non-linear systems. Simulations are currently undertaken on an ad hoc basis in the mining industry due to high requirements in computing environments and advanced geostatistics. In contrast to the estimation process, multivariate simulations can be performed using different methods, tools, and computational environments, similar to data science. For large companies with multiple commodities it is important to have a standard framework to test, build, and run workflows using different methods, applications and computational environments. This work presents an auditable, modular and scalable framework to create geostatistical simulation workflows where the workflow is abstracted from the implementation. Key aspects: automation – workflows should be able to run automatically given updated data (if hands on modelling is not required); auditability – workflows should document key considerations and parameters; modularisation – workflows should permit swapping out components, for example substituting domaining in Leapfrog software with automated domaining using machine learning scripts; scalability – easy, repeatable, portable deployments on diverse infrastructure (for example, experimenting on a laptop, then moving to an on premise cluster or to the Cloud); reproducibility – parameters should be archived to permit re-running and reproduction of workflows in future years; and sensitivity analysis – any component of a workflow should be able to run with multiple scenarios of parameters and data to enable global uncertainty quantification and sensitivity analysis. The presented framework can be used to create different workflows for geostatistical simulations in multiple assets to quantify uncertainty in the value chain for resource categorisation, reserves uncertainty, value of information and robust mine planning amongst others.

Trial ore production began at the Hilton Mine in 1987 with ore being trucked into Mount Isa for treatment at the Lead/zinc Concentrator. The expansion of output from the Hilton mine required additional concentrator capacity which led to the design and construction of the Hilton Concentrator. Systematic laboratory and Pilot Plant testwork dating back to 1968 to develop a flowsheet and reagent regime suited to the varied and generally complex mineralogy of the Hilton ore was successfully concluded with a Pilot Plant trial using a sulphoxy based sphalerite depression system in early 1988.In May 1988, a decision was made to build a 750 000 t/y concentrator with some novel technological and capital-efficient features. The Hilton Concentrator commenced operations in December 1989 reaching target grinding rates and metallurgical performance by mid-1990. Current ore treatment rate is 800 000 t/y.Lead concentrates assaying 43 - 48 per cent Pb are combined with the Lead/Zinc Concentrator lead concentrates and smelted at Mount Isa. Zinc and Low Grade Middlings (LGM) concentrates are filtered in the zinc filter plant at Isa with those from the Lead/Zinc Concentrator and then railed to Townsville for export or treatment in Australia.

Data logged on mineral beneficiation processes during normal operation are analysed using time series (correlation and spectral) methods to identify the dynamics of the processes for on-line computer control. Recursive least squares estimation techniques are used to identify parametric models for a cassiterite flotation circuit and a coal washery. Identification problems such as the determination of model order, process time delays and the 'contamination' of the data by process recycle streams (feedback) are discussed. Typical results are presented in which optimised models are identified from data logged during normal operation.

THE filter-press, which has done so much for the successful-treatment of the sulpho-telluride ores of Kalgoorlie, has a serious rival in the vacuum process, and this paper is written with a view to arousing more interest in the cheaper working of the press, it being doubtful whether its efficiency in extraction can be improved upon. Before proceeding with the actual working of the press, it may be as well to make brief mention of the character of the ore treated at the Associated Northern Blocks, where these notes were compiled. The Australian Coal Industry Research Laboratories Ltd. (A.C.I.R.L.) MINVENT computer program can be used to simulate existing and projected colliery ventilation requirements. New collieries can be planned using a database of ventilation parameters which were ascertain- ed by A.C.I.R.L. surveys at selected collieries in N.S.W. and Queensland. Several techniques are used in both the formulation of the database and in the evaluat- ion of a ventilation system, prior to analysis by the MINVENT program. The analysis of a ventilation system requires the measurement of air quantities, pressures and hence airway resistances. All resistances are calculated at standard air density of 1.205 kg/m3. Air densities are derived from barometric pressure and wet and dry bulb temperature readings. Airway frictional and shock losses, leakage through stoppings and overcasts, flow of air through regulators, face resistance and resistance of anomalous ventilation features are related to the typical Australian measured data presented.

Design of cemented fill in mining is often carried out without any consideration of the structure of the fill. The composition of cemented fills varies in the stopes due to the placement method, and the strength of the fill in the laboratory depends on the density, orient- ation, moisture content and drainage conditions. Within each stope there are definite zones and the structure of both cemented rockfill and cemented hydraulic fill has to be defined for each zone and the field conditions simulated in the laboratory. Structure also affects fill permeability and compressibility. From a study of the cemented fill in place, the effect of changes in the placement methods can be seen and then controlled to improve fill performance and economy. These features of cemented hydraulic fill and cemented rockfill behaviour are discus- sed and illustrated through reference to field and laboratory work undertaken at Mount Isa.

In South Africa, as in many other countries, the young engineering graduate is promoted quite soon to a management position where he uses less technical skills and more people-oriented skills. In the standard undergraduate curriculum for engineering, little attention is paid to the non-technical issues of the profession. An undergraduate course in management techniques cannot be a substitute for a MBA or Masters degree in engineering management, but can at least create an awareness of the practical problems facing the engineering manager. The aim of this paper is to provide an outline of such a course structure at the University of Stellenbosch. A survey is also presented on management training in the South African and Australian mineral industries. Feedback from students and graduates indicates that the fresh graduate does not fully appreciate the value of such a course until he/she achieves a position of responsibility after two or three years. Nevertheless, the management course appears to be successful in widening the perspectives of the engineer. As explained frequently in management journals, the technically oriented person (the engineer) has a convergent thought pattern, which could be in conflict with the more divergent thought pattern of the top, personnel or marketing manager. It becomes increasingly imperative for the young minerals engineer to be externally oriented instead of the traditional internal focus of engineering. The engineer should not only be aware of environmental issues in the technical design and operation of plants, but should also understand the inter-relationship between public relations, political pressures and environmental perceptions vis-d-vis technical facts.

The purpose of filtration in a gold reco- very plant is to separate the gold bearing liquid from the solids in the slurry. Some of the gold is inevitably lost due to incomplete separation. An investigation recently completed by the authors has brought to light a method of reducing such losses. In this investigation, the filtration pro- cess was represented by a steady-state mathema- tical model which took account of 14 indepen- dent variables and three parameters. One of the filters in the plant at West Driefontein Gold Mine in South Africa was isolated from the rest and fully instrumented. A computerized data acquisition system was installed close to the filter, and the data obtained from it served to test the model. Using the model together with an optimizing program, the optimum operating point for the filter as a function of throughput was found, and a control strategy developed to minimize the total gold losses in the filter plant.

Synthetic calaverite (Au Tez) has been prepared and its physical properties checked.Simple flotation tests indicate that the recovery of calaverite should be possible using n-butyl or sec-butyl xanthate collectors under approximately pi I neutral conditions with a copper sulphate activator.Roasting calaverite in air at moderate temperatures resulted in its decomposition with the formation of elemental gold and tellurium dioxide.In alkaline oxygenated cyanide solutions, both gold and tellurium tend to dissolve. At pHs less than 14, about 50 per cent of the tellurium remains as elemental tellurium; however in very strongly alkaline solutions, essentially all of the tellurium is converted to the soluble tellurite ion (TeOl-).However, even at high pHs, the solubility of gold in the cyanide solution is still low due almost certainly to passivation effects.

Ore-hosting breccias occur in a wide variety of environ-ments, shapes, compositions and characteristics, but generally present favorable loci for the deposition of ore mineralization in epithermal, porphyry copper-gold-molybdenum, massive sulfide, carbonate-hosted, sedimentary lead-zinc deposits and others.

Resources added to the global metal inventory through exploration over the past 15 years have been generally of poor quality (declining grades, recoveries and lack of acceptable financial return). Similarly, companies opting for an acquisitions-based strategy have had to pick from a group of poorer quality resources left from previous exploration booms, and will struggle to deliver this metal to market economically. Increasing difficulty in obtaining sufficient social and community acceptance of mining projects and potentially an energy-constrained future may exacerbate this problem, redefining what is considered ‘ore’. There will need to be more focus on deposit quality, defined as sustainable margin in the future business environment.Traditionally there has been a lack of translation of ‘mineralisation quality’ back to mineral project design and mineral exploration. This disconnect is due to two main factors: the first is technical – inherent deposit variability; and the second is organisational and socio-psychological –the mindset of explorers and project managers themselves.There are four elements to value realisation for a mineral deposit: (1) social licence to operate; (2) geological factors (depth, geometry, water and geotechnical, and geometallurgy – influenced by texture, mineralogy, chemistry and grades); (3) financial engineering (capex, opex, future commodity prices, future energy prices), and (4) operating factors (production rate, recovery, energy consumption). These elements are strongly interdependent, and geology underpins and drives linkages between them. A quality deposit addresses all of these elements and thus can be developed in a time frame that allows acceptable returns to the owners of the invested capital.Geological drivers of the above elements can be measured and mapped throughout a deposit. Moreover, when viewed in the context of mineral systems, a predictive understanding of the common causative processes of quality (despite deposit-scale variability) is emerging, and with it the ability to target quality of mineralisation, not just quantity of mineralisation.The second factor is a ‘heuristic software problem’. Current lines of education (and consequently organisational and professional structures) are discipline-based, producing ‘silos’ that do not speak each other’s language and work with different ‘mental models’. People who effectively recognise systemic links between these silos are called ‘boundary spanners’, of which we propose two distinct types: outside-insiders and inside-outsiders. Outside-insiders are people who are within a community, but recognise advances in outside fields and effectively integrate them into the community. Inside-outsiders start outside of a community, and successfully bring new ideas into it. Common traits in boundary spanners are: they seek exposure to (and embrace) key ideas that are outside of the framework of their own specialisation; they have high mental processing ability (MPA) – the ability to connect systems that are currently not perceived to be connected; and they introduce ideas from outside a field into a new context in a way that re-frames the field.The challenge is to identify and nurture potential boundary spanners that can build critical links, in particular between the (largely geoscientific) mineral exploration mindset and the (largely non-geoscientific) project development mindset. I am honoured and very pleased to have been given the opportunity this evening to say a few words of thanks not only on behalf of all the guests but especially for the delegates and accompanying persons attending the 13th Congress of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions. Firstly, I would like to congratulate Sir Hamilton Whyte,KCMG for his most interesting address. In his far ranging talk, when he showed knowledge of widely diverse subjects, I had a brief fear that he was going to be talking about the details of support methods in deep level mines, or how to avoid flotation problems in multi-metal mines. Although he did not go that far, he touched on subjects which have arisen this week - long term planning and secure supply of minerals at acceptable prices. The dire predictions of the Club of Rome have been debunked with a far more elastic supply of minerals having been proved. Combined with the importance of a falling birthrate in some parts of the world, this will lead to many changes in the future, when hopefully governments will take the long term view rather than look at the next budget or the next election. Maybe some of them are not too lazy to do this for all of us. However as a fellow Ukranian, I feel that he might have been called something different if he had been in Australia. Sir Hamilton, thank you for your talk. Once upon a time - and this is not a fairy story - there was a cobbler who had two sons; one very bright who became a professor of mathematics; the other, dim, who became a millionaire shoemaker. Asked for the secret of his success, the millionaire attributed it to a vital piece of economics which his father had imparted, "Be content with small margins on a large turnover." "So", said the millionaire, "I make my shoes for $2 a pair and sell them for $5. I am very happy with the three per cent profit."

I am very pleased to be here at this seminar on carbon-in-pulp (CIP) technology for the extraction of gold as I am always interested to hear about any new development in any aspect of gold ore processing. We can expect to learn a great deal from the papers to be presented over the next few days. It is not my purpose to give a detailed description of the CIP process nor to give a complete historical review. However, in this opening address it was thought appropriate that I should mention some historical features and some technical factors to set the scene for subsequent papers.
